It was good to see Mana laugh, especially since she looked so glum telling the story. Hideki smiled, well, up until the girl started explaining parallel universes. It sounded like something he’d seen on TV before, but then again, so did Digimon, so why was he really surprised? Wait, why can lawful universe Ryouta turn pillows into water pillows? That seems like THE most situational power of all time. Also, why? There went the movie deal.. Oh wait, that’s not important. What was important that after that, Mana said that Charles was her guy.
Her idea about helping the boy (man?) tame his spirits made sense. Charles’ spirit was terrifying sounding, far more powerful than anything he’d ever seen. There was a part of that story that got his attention more, though. Mana almost drowned! That combined with her boyfriend transforming into a horrible corpse-gestalt had to be highly traumatic.
He felt bad for the guy, he really did. He seemed like a nice dude that had just kind of been cursed with the life he was dealt. ‘If it meant sacrificing my friends, my family, and my life for the sake of becoming a murderous monster.. wait, that’s unfair. Maybe he had a good reason to do so. Maybe he had to protect someone or something, I mean, he did save Mana’s life once.’ The boy had no home.. he ran away from it. Just then Hideki realized exactly how nice Mana was. Her own life almost ending didn’t even merit a casual response… and she was willing to take a homeless person into her own home and let him take a bath. She even bought him clothes! Hideki remembered that day back at the farm, when she thought that her friends had died.. Ayaka became something different, something scary.. but it was because of the pain that Mana felt. She just cared that much about others.
Just randomly singing? That sounds a lot like Ryoko.. Hideki didn’t know how to refer to her now. He definitely respected her a lot (well.. kind of. She’s famous and all, but he respected her more as a more experienced tamer), thus ‘–sama’ was accurate (-ish).. but she was still the same Ryoko-chan that he had met in the gunpla store. The part with Ryoko sounded REALLY silly, like.. quasi-Bollywood movie silly until Mana mentioned someone throwing water balloons and trying to rip off the Idol’s clothes. That idea upset Hideki probably more than it should have. 'Why on Earth would anyone do that? That’s a terrible way to treat someone they don’t even know!' Then Mana mentioned that she’d been hit.. that she was soaked and Charles had ignored her. Hideki was very upset, even though he knew it was a story. He had been expected to hear something that would scare him, something that would shock him. But he didn’t even know this guy and was upset at him. No one treats his friends like that! Wait.
‘Maybe Mana-chan and I aren’t alike at all. I mean, I remember back whenever I saw Ayaka change, I really just wished that I hadn’t run inside.. that maybe if the Centarumon had just blown me up, killed me, that I wouldn’t have been dumb enough to put everyone else in danger. I saw the thing aiming at me. I didn’t even think about Aria or Aruraumon when I jumped inside that building. I just didn’t want to die. But, maybe that just means that Mana-chan’s a better person than me. Yeah, that sounds about right.’ He saw that the girl’s memory hadn’t just upset him, that she was upset in a different way. He saw tears in her eyes.
He was glad that Karin had managed to set things straight again. Hideki would have shaked the woman’s hand if he saw her, because that’s what his dad had always taught him to do when you meet someone you respect. Glad to see someone had some common sense around there.
The thing about the cape seemed like a bad call to Hideki. He didn't know if the changes were voluntary or not, but why would Charles ever want to become ChaosKimeramon again? It doesn’t matter if he has the cape or not, something like that is bad news regardless. But the thing about Charles’s family seemed strange.
Why would she be upset that he didn’t want to share everything with her? It was their first date, which, although it hardly seemed normal, isn’t the ‘spill your guts’ date. Hideki was shocked when the tears started streaming down her face. When she asked what he would do, but he really didn’t know. Before, he completely agreed with the girl.. but her story seemed really, really over-dramatically bad. Hideki had never gone on a date.. heck, he’d rarely spoken to a girl anywhere near this much. Even then, it was either his teacher or a relative. But Mana was sobbing heavily, and before he could compose his thoughts into a coherent form, she continued.
Hideki’s eyes were the size of saucers when Mana finished recounting the tale of Charles’s spirit’s killing. That thing killed a human. He killed a cop! She was lucky that the monster didn’t kill her too.. He had previously been on the boy's side.. that he thought that the two could work it out, or that maybe Mana was just making mountains out of molehills, but his position did a complete 180 degree turn when he heard about the attack.
“Mana.. look, you asked for my opinion and I'll give Charles the benefit of the doubt.. but please, please don't go looking for him. He sounds like he can handle himself and, if you're around him, that monster inside of him might hurt you too. I know you've got Ayaka and Penny with you too, but think about what that thing was capable of." He stopped for a moment, anticipating a slap. "But we're kids, you know? Did you ever think to stop for a moment and worry about what's best for you for once?"

Mana sighed at the boy's words. Maybe he thought to highly of her, and well, he was right up to an extent, but the reasons why she wanted to find Charles weren't really to continue her relationship with him. Kinda the opposite. "Hideki-kun, I know that Charles-kun can handle himself just fine and... I want to find him precisely because that very same question. You've already met me and you know that I'm just a little girl that cares too much for everyone around her and seems to be strong, but in the very bottom is just afraid and emotional... and fragile. I thought I could handle Charles-kun's spirits, but in the end... I can't see him the same way since he— I mean, since his spirit murdered that officer. I mean, I know that he wasn't in control, but what is the family of that officer gonna say about it? Anyway, that doesn't matter, because the end of tale is... rather unexpected".
She took a deep breath. "Some time ago after meeting his other-dimensional selves, I met Ryo-kun again on a... really weird situation. Really long history short, forgetting about a crush is tad hard, you know? Even if I tried with my all to just forget about him, the feelings were still there, and it didn't help at all that he now looked like a bodybuilder compared to his previous self. Our little adventure involved me being knocked unconscious while barechested, withstanding an assault from an horde of BlackAgumons, reliving a really traumatic experience and even meeting Penny-chan! But definitely the best part was that just after meeting Penny-chan, Ryo-kun admitted that he requited my feelings and I just couldn't feel more happy about that, but technically, I was, and I am still Charles-kun girlfriend.
Me and Ryo-kun are as close as we can be, but we aren't in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship because I hate loose ends. I can't go forward without feeling guilty with my conscience if I just became Ryo-kun's girlfriend without breaking up with Charles-kun first. Yeah, I know, sounds really heartless, but I really want to be with Ryo-kun and if Charles-kun actually cared about me... he'd have appeared or something, right? Yet, I've promised that I'd help him in any way I can, and I'm just not ready to break up that promise yet. If things keep going this way, I will, but some time has to pass for that to happen. Lest to say, I've never been happier in my life since me and Ryo-kun are 'together'. He even encouraged me to try out in the next Kamen Rider movie, and I even got a role as one of the Riders! Can you believe it!? Anyway, well, that's my tale. Thank you very much for hearing it, Hide-kun".
After saying that, she smiled widely at him and gave him an affectionate hug. "You're a really good friend, you know? I was so relieving to share this with someone who didn't have a biased opinion on the matter. Well, better if we go back to the camp now. We don't want to Ayaka to grow worried, do we?". Yet, when they finally reached the camp, they'd find out that the only being that was left behind wasn't there anymore, and that from her tent, a lot of small footsteeps were seen. Footsteeps that lead to... the Ruins. Could it be? Could it be that Ayaka had actually been kidnapped?

“Yeah, that I can understand. I just thought...” Mana explained her reasoning. Her reasoning was almost exactly like his. Huh. “Oh, um… then please continue.”
Hideki listened patiently as Mana explained the rest of the tale. So Ryouta liked her back! Awesome, but what about the future Ryoutas? Maybe they were in some alternate timeline stuff that Ryouta never saved her or something. Hm.. Then that could probably work out for the best. But, Hideki could see why Mana was so crazy over him. The dude was built like the Arnold Schwarzenegger from Predator. His mind glossed over the fact that Mana was bare-chested when all of this trauma happened, man.. Mana’s life sucks balls sometimes. I mean almost drowning, falling on your face after having the world’s worst date, being a witness to an actual murder after said date, realizing that your main crush doesn’t like you, then realizing that he does like you, but only after aforementioned murder-date combo plate and him seeing you topless. The worst that had ever happened to Hideki (besides being almost eaten by wolf-mon things) was either the haunted house or the time that he wet himself in public and accidentally ran into the women’s restroom. Relationships are so much drama. Is this what tamer’s lives are supposed to be like? He was really glad to hear that Mana and Ryouta were together. That’s a good ending to that story, but the fact that she wanted to go find Charles to break up seemed like a terrible idea. Mana seemed so happy though, which was awesome. He was pushing her to do new things, to grow as a person, which is equally awesome. Maybe someday she would realize just how bad her idea was. “It’s alright, Mana. You’re my friend and, honestly, probably the only real source of entert…” He wasn’t expecting a hug. He really wasn’t expecting a hug. Any sarcastic, silly response the boy was thinking melted away. “Thanks Mana. Yeah, I’m hoping that fire’s still up. I got like.. no marshmallows thanks to this loser.” He pointed his thumb at his digimon partner and laughed. Troopmon was a good guy, or a good girl… maybe it was just a good thing. It’s hard describing something using humanoid terms when it lacks a gender. But regardless, Hideki would have it no other way. It had been a good night. Good food, good friends, and the weather was great. Hideki hoped that Ayaka was feeling better when they got back, but if not, then there was always the morning. Imagine his shock when the entire campsite was gone.. Ayaka along with it. 'I knew I should have left Troopmon with her.. not that he could do anything, but still."

THE LOST CIVILIZATION [3/4]
As they approached the camp and Mana contemplated what had happened, there was just one reaction to be expected from the girl. Even if the footsteps clearly exited from her partner's tent and went in the ruins' direction, she sprinted towards her tent and opened it right away. "Ayaka! Ayaka!" she shouted desperately to the insides of the empty tent to no avail. She couldn't believe it; why? Why they had kidnapped her partner? She just couldn't understand it.
Tears immediately began to populate her eyes. She had been so stupid; she had left her partner alone when she was weak, oblivious of the dangers of this place. Deciding to finally leave the tent, only despair and sadness were visible on her eyes. "This was because of me" she finally said with regret "I was so selfish about my problems that I left Ayaka alone with hers and because of that someone or something has her right now, and only God knows what they may do to her! Wh-what I'm supposed to do without her, what!? She's my best friend I and left her alone! I-I... I don't deserve her...".
The tears began to run more violently, almost as a wild stampede of Monochromons. It was rather obvious that she was having a breakdown until... she felt something tugging her pants. Looking down, she saw Penny that was regarding her with a worried, yet calm and even expression. "That's all?" she asked in her most cold tone "Someone got Ayaka and you're going to stand like that, thinking that you can't solve it!? Get a hold of yourself, Mana-sama! You say that she's your best friend? Well, time to prove that to yourself and to her! I'm sure that if something wrong has happened to her, she's probably counting on you and on Hideki-san to help her. That's what friends are for, supposedly! Maybe you had committed a mistake towards her previously, but you won't be able to make up for it if you don't save her from wathever has her right now!".
At the dragon's speech, Mana's sobs began to recede. Yeah, she was right; she wouldn't be able to ask for her partner's forgivness if she just let the baddies have her. That, coupled with the words she'd surely recieve from Hideki, filled her with determination. She'd find whoever had kidnapped her partner and retrieve her. She was sure that Penny'd help her, but... what about Hideki? Nah, that was an stupid doubt, she was just sure that the boy would help her. He was her friend, and friends just did that.
"I guess that we should get going before the wind blows the footsteps from the sand. They are kinda shallow, so we'll have to follow them by feet or we'll risk to lose the track. Better if we hurry... because I just don't know what the guys that kidnapped Ayaka are capable of, or why they want her of all the things. Hide-kun I'm counting on you for this but... don't feel obligated to go with me if you don't want to, though, as this most probably this will get dangerous, and if whatever kidnapped Ayaka was able to overpower her, that means that it's quite powerful too. Don't worry about me, you can follow my D-3's signal if anything happens or if I send you a message saying that something has happened".
Having said that, the girl began to follow the now-vanishing tracks in the desert's floor. It was somewhat obvious that they leaded to the Ruins, but the possibilty of that being a red herring was everpresent, and she didn't to lose valuable time while those baddies did whatever they had in mind to Ayaka. Hopefully Hideki and her would be able to rescue her, but if not... she could only hope that she was alright. She already had had too many misadventures for this week, but even then, fate didn't seemed to want to give her a break. As she advanced, she didn't stop to silently pray for her partner's welfare. She had to be alright or she'd just... never forgive herself.

What had happened? Ayaka was gone.. she was just gone? Hideki didn’t see the footprints in the dirt, he didn’t care that the last cinders of the starving fire were dying out. His friend was gone. He looked around dumbfounded as Mana darted about, punishing herself for the absence of her partner. The girl was breaking down, collapsing right in front of Hideki’s eyes. She was shouting and openly weeping as her other digimon went to her.
It wasn’t surprising.. Mana had been really emotional lately, but Hideki couldn’t believe that she was just shutting down. Now wasn’t the time for a pity party. Ayaka needed help. He understood that the girl’s love life was in shambles, that it was a sad story, but Ayaka needed their help! He had considered leaving the tamer in her tear-filled state and going after Ayaka himself, sighing as the girl felt the need to express just how guilty she was feeling. However, he was stopped as he saw Penny move towards their mutual friend and started speaking.
The small dragon spoke truly, trying to motivate her friend from inaction. She was right, Mana sitting around and feeling bad for herself wasn’t going to help anyone. Penny needed them! The impact her words had on Mana were profound, ceasing the torrential outflow of the child’s tears and let her pick herself up. Before Penny had even finished talking, Hideki was already stretching his back and Troopmon was on all fours, sniffing the ground. The digimon wouldn’t have much luck with that, firstly considering his lack of a nose and secondly considering his overall inability to find anything that wasn’t food.
“Well.. Penny’s right. Sitting around isn’t going to help Ayaka. If you know where to go, let’s go get her. And she’s my friend too, Mana. I won’t abandon her and I’m definitely not going abandon you two. I mean, it’s not like I’ve got a lot of friends to begin with. Can’t go losing three more. On top of that, what kind of guy would I be if I let you two do this without me?”
The boy thought that he sounded brave and cool, but the two girls were already on their way. Troopmon followed close behind, still crawling on all fours like some kind of demonic cat monster. He was prowling for trouble, looking for a fight.. or he was scrounging for dropped food. Either way, Hideki knew that with a friend in distress and two beside him, he and Troopmon could take on anything.

Mana smiled at Hideki, clearly happy that the boy had decided to help her in her quandary. She felt a little bad for doubting him, but with all these emotions, it was just too hard to think straight. Giggling a bit at Troopmon behaving like some kind of bloodhound trying to track the girl's partner, they began to follow to trail. "Thank you, Hide-kun. I'm sure that Ayaka would be thankful if she heard you too. I really don't know where to go, but if these footprints were made by the kidnappers, I guess that we'll find them sooner or later".
Mana and Penny were hot on the trail of the footprints, wondering if they indeed lead to the ruins or if they just drifted into somewhere else. It was hard to guess as of now, but they'd find it in due time, or at least she hoped that. The path extended itself for a good distance but one thing remained constant as they were closed on the place; the atmosphere was eerily silent, almost as if something was watching them, or maybe just because they were in the middle of the night and things had been silent since they had decided to camp here. But still, the almost absolute darkness negated only by Troopmon's eyes or the faint glowing of the stars made this situation a little creepy.
"Say, Hide-kun" she began, on hopes to undo the strange sense of uneasiness that had taken hold of the atmosphere "Do you have any brothers or sisters? I've an older brother named Yuu, and he's usually very grumpy, but is becoming progressively more happy as of late. Maybe you have met him? He's not one of those guys who precisely stick out, just doing so because he's a little taller than the average, just like me, but he's a somewhat quiet person. Well, quiet is an understatement, but I'm digressing! His partner is a really cute Salamon named Kyo! You have to totally met her some day. I'm sure that her and Troopie-kun would get along just fine".
The path began to grow short, and Penny's senses were now focused on kind detecting any possible trap that the kidnappers may have laid. She still didn't know how they had been so silent and fast during the act. Her millitary-trained mind was already guessing what kind of traps would be most effective in this terrain, agreeing that pitfalls would be the most common, as they were just too easy to conceal on sand. They could be anywhere, and even if Mana's attempt to lessen this heavy atmosphere were justified, chatting in this kind of situation was dangerous at best. And just couldn't do.
"I'm sorry to interrupt" she said on a solemn, yet low tone "But this isn't the time or place to talk about non-urgent matters. I suggest for you to remain quiet, as who knows what are we facing. Also, beware of the ground you step on. I've lived on a similar place during my childhood, and pitfalls aren't something you may want to step upon". The girl, taking the dragon's words very seriously, closed her mouth in that precise instant, but not before muttering a quick and silent 'sorry'. Luckily, nothing happened during their way, and at the end of it, their suspicions were proven true. The footprints followed into the ruined and (not so) unhabited city. Mana gulped, thinking on what could lurk inside such a place, but she had to be brave. Ayaka was somewhere there, and she had already decided that she would find her no matter what. Yet...
"The track ends here, and for a reason, I guess. Unless it was something extremely heavy or big, I doubt that we'd find footprints marked in the stone floor of this city" Penny was quick to herald the bad news, even if they weren't that hard to guess "Yet... I'm smelling Ayaka-sama's scent. Follow me, I think that I'll be able to find the place where they carried her".
Penny began advancing with her nose on the ground, following the track she believed she had. They began going to the center of the city, and the scent began to grew from relatively faint to something that wasn't really hard to notice. Mana smiled at that, because it meant that Ayaka was conscious, and probably alright.
"Clever girl" she muttered "I think that she's making them think that she's unconscious while leaving that scent trail behind without them noticing. We'll find her in not time if we keep following it". Reaching the center of the city, Penny continued to track the flowery aroma until they stumbled into a pair of giant double doors, seemingly made out of pure stone that looked to be heavily deteriorated due to time. The thing was closed, but it wasn't hard to guess that it was used frequently due to the movement marks on the floor. It gave an impression of decayed opulence, almost as a sign of greatness that faded with the passing of time. It was a little sad to see, but that wasn't the time to reflect on that.
"Okay, probably Ayaka and whoever has her are in this very place" Mana said on her most low tone, hoping that both Hideki and Troopmon would keep it quiet too "Are you ready to do this? I don't know what's ahead of us, but it may be dangerous, so I won't enter until you say that you are ready. Hopefully we'll surprise them because... I don't know what they may have in store for us if they were expecting us to come here".

“Just doing what’s right, Mana-chan.” Hideki was happy to see that his friend was smiling, whether it was at his offer or Troopmon’s shenanigans wasn’t important. “The footprints seem to be our only clue… and it’s not like we’ve got much of a choice. So yeah, I’d say that sounds like a plan.” The boy and his tamer followed the girl and her dragon samurai digimon for quite a while through the dense jungle. The weirdest thing about it, though, was the distinct lack of noise. ‘It’s quiet… too…’ the boy stopped himself from mentally completing the biggest cliché in the book. ‘No Hideki! Don’t even think that. When someone says that, something bad always happens.. and maybe if we just keep our head up and mouth shut, noting will happen.’ Just then, something did happen, some noise broke through the unerring silence. Mana was talking. ‘Good!’ Hideki almost said aloud. ‘I was starting to get really weirded out by the sudden.. what’s the word? Uh, whatever.’
“Yeah, actually. I’ve got an older brother too! His name’s Kenichi.” The boy’s older brother seemed much like Mana’s. Kenichi was grumpy, taller than him, and even relatively quiet (when he wasn’t stressing out over school work or out with his college friends). “He sounds a lot like my bro. And.. if height is genetic, I’m glad the grumpiness wasn’t too.” Hideki added with a smile. “But any friend, well.. sibling, of yours is a friend of mine, Mana-chan. I’m sure that Troopmon would probably get along great with Kyo. I don’t think I’ve really met anyone he doesn’t get along with; Well, besides the ones that have tried to kill us.. and maybe Kotemon, depending on if grudges were held from… the incident.”
The boy started to go into detail about the horrible accident at the haunted house, but then they were shushed by Penny. “Oh sorry.. I just figured.. I’ll stop now.” The boy muttered under his breath something about “gettin’ to the good part too.” But the mention of pitfalls quickly put an end to the boy’s gripes. Fear of death is a good motivator in situations like these.
The tamer’s sense of dread only increased as he just noticed the ancient stonework directly ahead. ‘Man.. I’ve really got to start paying better attention.’ The rookie made a good point about not being able to see footprints in stone, something that Hideki should have realized from the beginning. The boy and his digimon weren’t the smartest kids around, but luckily it seemed that Penny had more than enough brains, and it seemed that Ayaka had even more, as Mana described her thoughts on the strong flowery scent that filled the air. The large stone doors loomed ahead of them before long. Big things, looked heavy too. Luckily, they were already broken a little so it wasn’t as if they were entirely structurally sound. Hideki briefly considered just kicking them down before Mana spoke up. Well, not exactly speaking, but it was close enough.
“Uh.. yeah, I guess we don’t have any time to waste. Don’t you think that the door opening will be a pretty huge give-away that something’s up? I mean..” the boy started in a whisper before turning to look at his friend, Troopmon. However, the digimon wasn’t where the boy had assumed he would be. The undead digimon was, in fact, several meters back, on all fours, and preparing to charge the large doors. The creature leapt through the air before being enveloped in a familiar glow, and when he made contact with the door, it was with a large, steel-toed cyborg leg. Even louder than his collision with the door and its subsequent sliding across the stone masonry was the digimon’s angry shouts.
“ALRIGHT! Which one of ya yella’ bellied, flea-bitten, hijos de puta idjits took my friend?” The digimon held a gun in each hand as he spat his insults into the room, as if daring anyone to speak up.

Mana smiled at Hideki talking about his older brother. By his description, Kenichi and Yuu seemed to have a lot of things in common; she just only hoped that Kenichi's quietness was because he was genuiniely quiet, instead of having his speech... 'impeded', but that was a matter for another time. She kept listening when he spoke about how Troopie made easy friends, making her wish that Ayaka could some day see him as... well, something else than dim-witted digimon, but that too was a matter for another time. And by deeming all those topics for another time, she had just kept walking her way towards the ruins with a thoughtful expression.
A comment, however, escaped her mouth as they kept traveling. "Does Kenichi know about digimon? Maybe one day the four of us we could go to the Digital World! Maybe even Aria-chan and Haru-chan will come with us! That'd be fun, don't you think?" She kept it quiet quickly, though, as Penny had already shushed them, and being disciplined twice by the dragon would make things a little embarassing for her. Back in the door, Hideki asked the girl if opening the door would be a giveaway of their presence. Truth to be told, it'd be a rather dead giveaway. Wasn't it obvious? "Well, yes. Of course it would... oh, you're pretty smart, Hide-kun! You're saying that it'd be better to search for another no-so-obvious entrance! That's a pretty good idea!".
However, Mana's faith in Hideki's words crumbled away when Troopmon charged towards the door, evolving into Deputymon midair and opening the door with a loud stomp. To say that the newly-evolved cowboy was causing a ruckus was an understatement, and the swear words that he used made Mana blush furiously. She hadn't heard such a display of filthy words in her life but... it wasn't time for that. With a facepalming Penny in tow, she entered in the place just behind Deputymon.
To everyone's surprise (or not so, really), the place's entrance was totally unhabited at the moment. It was something to be expected, as the entrance was a really big, long and dark hall. "Uh, Deputymon-san, you know that these places are called ruins for a reason, right? If people were living just inside places, probably it'd be called 'village' or 'city' if you catch my drift. Maybe there's some kind passage inside this thing leading to an underground complex or something like that. And maybe, if we advance we'll find where Ayaka-sama is. And please, keep it quiet, would you? Who knows what's ahead of us".
The girl in pink looked at the place, amazed for a second. It was so dark that it was almost impossible to see, but that didn't deter Mana from stare at the place with amazement. "An underground village? Sounds like really neat place. Wonder if they have giant drills to do the tunnels and that stuff. That'd be so cool, Hide-kun, don't you think?" Her words echoed slightly in the narrow halls as they kept advancing through the darkness. The atmosphere was a little unsettling, but it was a manageable one, at least during the first tract of their journey through the giant building.
Barely seen at the end of the place, there was what it looked to be a giant stairway that spiraled into the darkness below. Ayaka's sccent had carried them through that place; Mana was determined to continue, even if she could barely see and the stairs looked to be dangerous. One little slip in the dark, and nobody knew how much they'd fall until they hit the ground. "So, Hide-kun, are you ready? Probably on the bottom of those stairs is the place where Ayaka is kept captive. This time just... try to control Deputymon, alright? I don't want to compromise Ayaka's safety because of a misstep". Having said that, she and Penny began to slowly descend through the stairs. Nobody knew if the descent would be quick or slow, or even if they'd find light at some point during it. But the pair was sure that Ayaka was down below, and nothing would stop them to reach her.

Hideki wasn’t sure about introducing Kenichi to the idea of digimon.. the boy probably wouldn’t take it very well, knowing that his sibling had been gallivanting around some parallel dimension full of monsters while he should be doing his homework. But when he went to respond to the girl’s question, he caught himself before speaking. Taking a quick glimpse at the yellow dragon, the boy whispered quietly. “Um.. I don’t know about that Mana-chan. He’s not really an adventurous type.” He was glad that Mana thought that his sibling would be fun, and truth be told, the guy needed more friends his age, lest he spiral into an early college burnout. Hideki was also pleased that she said he was smart. He blushed when he heard the compliment.. he’d never been called smart before, or really received any compliment from anyone other than his mom. The closest he’d ever gotten was that maybe he wasn’t as dumb as he looked… but his thoughts were quickly sidetracked by a screaming cowboy cyborg smashing into a large stone surface. When the dust cleared from the armor-champion’s assault, it appeared the digimon had received his fair share of the team’s stupidity. “Huh.. where’d they go?”
The critique of the digimon’s actions from Penny shifted his mood from testosterone-fueled bravado to one of deep shame. Deputymon’s shoulders slumped as he ground the toe of one of his boots into the ground with a slight drilling motion, twisting it back and forth as he gazed at the ground somberly. “Awh, shucks.. I’m sorry Miss Penny. Ya’ll know how I get sometimes, though. Headstrong and caught in the moment. Shoot first and ask questions later. It’s always-“ the digimon continued, attempting to justify his actions before a swift shushing came from Hideki. “Come on man, we’re supposed to be quiet. I’m sure our voices would echo in a place like this.. and like Penny-chan said, even if there aren’t people here, there might be like.. a hidden city or something.” The boy wasn’t entirely sure he’d remembered exactly what Penny had said, but he’d gotten the gist of it. Like Mana, he’d been taken off guard by the digimon’s profane shouts and his overall endangering of their mission. However, always easily distracted, Hideki was sidetracked by Mana’s comments. “I don’t know about underground villages. I mean, they seem like they’d be a real drag.. I mean, everything would be all dark and what would you eat? Moles? That doesn’t sound like a good idea. Knowing my luck, I’d probably stumble upon some kind of weapon buried underground that’d be the end of the world as we know it. But the drills sound cool. I can totally get behind giant drills.”
Realizing his hypocrisy, however, Hideki bopped his forehead before looking back at Deputymon and Penny. “Sorry”, he whispered. He had gotten excited a little there and all this adventurous talk wasn’t exactly doing anything to help the excitable boy. He is a teenager, after all. From that point on, he stayed mostly silent and walked in the rear with Deputymon in tow. The digimon kept his eyes darting between shadows, alert for danger and considering imaginary threats while his human partner considered the logistics of an underground colony. ‘Well, you’d need to ration food and water unless you were buried near an aquifer.. then you could probably grow some crops and, with that, feed some livestock. Pig-mole hybrids would be perfect for something like that, considering pigs can eat almost anything and moles have great senses underground.. the babies would probably be really cute too. I think Mana would probably like-‘ Almost precisely as he thought the girl’s name she spoke to him as the group stopped. He almost kept walking, but was aware enough of his surroundings not to keep going into the void below. “You know me, Mana-chan. As ready as I’ll ever be.” He honestly didn’t know if he could control the headstrong champion, but he would sure as heck try. “She’s right though, buddy. If you don’t be careful, we might get Ayaka-chan hurt. So, please be careful, alright? Keep your guns ready, but don’t go rushing in until Penny says something.” The pair followed their friends’ descent into the shadows, placing every bit of their faith in the girls’ guidance.

Penny sighed at the cowboy's rashness and recklessness. Did he looked for them to be killed? Nah, it was obvious that he wasn't, but still she thought that Troopmon should be at least a little more patient about this. She wanted to recover Ayaka too, but if things just kept going this way, their chances would actually decrease instead of increase. Deciding to let the matter drop for the time being, she focused on the task at hand. The time to words would be later, at least for her.
However, Mana was still interesting in the whole concept of the underground villages, and some of Hideki's ideas were nice too, to boot. "Well, the details don't matter, as I'm sure that they'd be some sort of artificial light that'd reach them, don't you think? And I doubt that you'd have to eat cattle, but you could cultivate all kinds of tubers. Imagine all the giant potatoes!". She sounded excited by her idea, but a quick shushing came from Penny before she could continue "However, you stumbling into a weapon would be so cool" she whispered "Maybe some kind of robot? That'd be awesome".
Figuring that they'd only get more shushed if they kept talking, the girl remained silent, but noted that Hideki looked to be quite thoughtful. Maybe he was thinking about how underground villages would work? Because if he was, they'd thinking about the exact same thing. He seemed to snap out of it just as they were about to begin their descend. The stairway was dark and they had to walk carefully because the steps weren't quite regular. However, it seemed that the room was ample enough that no echo was produced by the contant sound of the four beings descending. Mana, looking at it like something that'd be quite boring, decided to try her hand at talking once again.
"What you were thinking about in the hallway, Hide-kun? You looked to be quite entertained with your thoughts. You know, I just wondered if there's really an underground city in here or not, and if there are going to be robots or not. It'd be cool if the robots would merge one with another, don't you think? Something like jogressing, but with robots! I digress, anyway, I doubt that we're going to find anything otherwordly down below".
They kept descending and descending, but the stairs just seemed to go downward and downward, but just as Mana began to wonder wether this thing would end or not, at the very bottom, she began to see a faint, greenish light. Not hurrying because the steps seemed to be even more irregular the more they approached them, at least now she knew that they were close to whatever was at the very bottom of this. "Just a little bit closer" she said after some steps "If what's downward is a true city, do you think that whoever kidnapped Ayaka were like the criminals of said city? Because it'd be so cool if the the rest of the guys were friendly, or at least, not outright hostile to us".

“Hm.. I didn’t think about artificial light. That works.” Hideki hadn’t even thought about potatoes. That would totally work! They even grow underground, right? Mana was really smart. “I don’t know.. I don’t think I could work a robot, but then again I never thought that I’d be exploring ancient ruins in a parallel world with a dragon and a cowboy. Maybe someday, I guess.” It was then when Hideki made a sudden realization… ‘My life is really freakin’ weird.’
“I was actually thinking about how you’d get water to grow things.. or what kind of thing you’d grow. Then I thought about how cute a pig-mole would be and it all kind of fell apart from there.” The boy twiddled his fingers in embarrassment. Until Mana mentioned robots. “Combining robots? Like Megazords? That’d be awesome. I’m not entirely sure what a jogress is, though..” Is that a Japanese word I don’t know? I was pretty sure I knew most of them now. Well, I guess you learn something new every day! “So.. jogress is like, combining things or something? I’m assuming it has to be with digimon.”
As they walked down the stairs, Hideki wondered what he would possibly find down below. It wasn’t like he hadn’t already seen all kinds of crazy things in this place.. from haunted houses run by friendly vampires to Spanish speaking alcoholic cacti. So really, pretty much anything could happen deep under the ground. The digital world was a magical place. It was an awesomely random, terrifyingly magical place. Mana was ever-cheerful though. ‘Maybe they’d be friendly.. maybe they would find some new comrades below.. after all, digimon shouldn’t be alone out there. Yeah, that could be it…’ Hideki found that his inner voice was oddly sarcastic today.

THE LOST CIVILIZATION [4/4] Well, Mana had to say that talking to Hideki about the possibilities of something that could or couldn't exist was... fun? On a rather weird sense, of course. She also had to admit that the boy had some really good ideas. "Well, life can be full of surprises! That's what good about it, after all! Who knows, maybe tomorrow you'll find a rifle-toting chick and they'll live a lot of adventures! Okay, that was a little surreal, I don't know why I said it".
She smiled (even if that smile couldn't be seen because of the darkness) when the boy said his idea, and actually squealed at the mentioned of pig-mole hybrids. They'd be completely adorable! "I'd love to see them someday. They'd be the cutest things in the world! I'm already imagining them. I'd totally hug the babies and I'd even buy my favourite one small sunglasses! Got it? A mole with sunglasses?".
Okay, she was talking quasi irrational stuff now, but the hype at imaginiging such a cute being could do that quite handily. Luckily jumped about her question about robots, distracting her mind from the perception of such cuteness and the consequences it would have. He didn't know what jogress was? She somewhat felt strange at that response, but hey, Hideki was somewhat new to all these things, even if he kinda irradiated this air of experience since the desert incident. Mana began to think how she would explain this.
"Well... not exactly like a megazord, but... well, let me see. Jogress is a contraction of 'joint progress', and it basically means, two digimons fusing like in... Dragon Ball? Something like that, and yes, it's done by digimons. I haven't done anything like that yet, but I've seen it and it looks really cool! Maybe one day you will see it too!".
As mentioned previously, there were reaching the bottom of the irregular and overly annoying stairway, that fact evidenced by dim lights below that began to grow in intensity as they went down. Their color wasn't the usual white or yellowish of a lightbulb, or crackling light of a torch, but something different. Their were greenish, as if some kind of neon light was at the bottom of this strange stairway. Mana looked at that with a puzzled expression, somewhat confused by the fact that such artificial light would be in a ancient-looking place, but discarded the thought immediately. This wasn't the time to be distracted by such a fact, specially since Ayaka could be in danger.
As they reached the bottom, the lights continued proyecting themselves, as if they were some kind of pathway. Their direction being a long corridor-like hallway that still extended itself for a good amount of distance. Sighing and thinking that most likely this could be a trap, the girl kept advancing in that direction. She didn't know why, but the hunch she had about the guys being friend began to slowly fade away. She could only hope that Penny would be ready for whatever was in front of them.
"I don't know why, but this smells a like some kind of trap" she whispered quietly as she walked silently "Be ready, just in case". The moment of truth was near, and that very sensation permeated the air with a sickening feeling. Just the thought of what kind of tortures Ayaka could be suffering in the dirty hands of those kidnappers made the girl shiver with fear and frustration. Why she couldn't catch a break? She had been experiencing a lot of mishaps, and most of them were her fault.
Okay, okay, stop with the self-pity, Mana! She thought as they reached yet another pair of massive stone doors. These looked to be bigger and studier than the first ones and had a way better apperance than the time-beaten ones from the entrance. The girl looked at Hideki with a serious expression, as if silently asking him if he was ready to do this, and silently hoping that Troopmon wouldn't try to make one of his dramatic entrances again. Penny readied herself too. Probably she'd have to evolve at a moment's notice, and she had to react fastly if the situation proved to be more difficult than what she expected.
