How has my life come to this? Marshal asked himself, staring at the unfamiliar environment before him. In his hand he held a huge egg that was probably about the size of his head. It was bright orange and felt strangely warm. As he stood in the station, he pondered how he could’ve ended up in this place that didn’t even seem like it was part of the Shibuya subway line.
* * *
“Marshal!” his mother cried out as she scurried out the door for another day of work. “Please don’t be late to school again today! Your teachers are starting to worry about you!” Marshal began to pull his blankets up over his head, as was his custom in the morning, but his mother knew him too well. “And don’t you dare go back to bed! If I come back this afternoon to find you still in bed again I will be very upset with you!” With that, Marshal’s mother closed the door behind her and headed for work.
A few silent minutes went by in the North household. Marshal was finally all alone, and he could finally sleep. That’s all he seemed to want to do lately, which wasn’t entirely out of character for him, but it was still concerning. After all he had been through in the past few years, though, it didn’t surprise his parents that Marshal didn’t really want to go much of anywhere or do anything. This month was coming up on the three-year anniversary of the day Marshal and his mother packed up and moved to Japan with his new stepfather. Marshal didn’t have anything against the guy, he was a great stepfather. It was more of the whole, “being ripped away from all your friends and moving to the other side of the planet” thing.
He managed at first, or at least he tried. He started learning the basics of the language got enrolled at the high school in Shibuya, but soon the weight of it all began to take its toll. Japanese was a hard language for him to learn, and thus Marshal wasn’t very adept at communicating with his classmates. One thing led to another, and now it was hard for him to even get out of bed in the morning to go to school.
Marshal almost fell asleep again, but suddenly his computer turned on across the room without any provocation. The monitor suddenly shone with a radiant light, one so bright that Marshal instantly drew the covers over his face to block it out. But then, as suddenly as it had happened, the light went out. Marshal sat up in bed to see an egg and some strange orange device sitting on his desk. Finally awake, he stumbled out of bed and over to the desk to examine these new objects.
“This has to be some sort of dream,” he muttered to himself. He shook his head around a few times and slapped his face gently a few times to make sure he actually was awake. After determining that he wasn’t dreaming, he looked over at the clock to see that he was late as usual.
“Oh, well,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “If I get to the train station right now, I’ll only be about five minutes late to class.” He grabbed his backpack off the floor and put the egg inside, giving the illusion that his backpack was full of books instead of completely empty like it usually was. Deciding that the device was also probably an important part of the whole ensemble, he strapped it onto his belt when he got dressed and dashed out the door.
* * *
The Shibuya Train Terminal was as busy as ever. Marshal walked around tentatively, always being nervous in spaces with a lot of people in them. He used his pass to get past the gate and waited for a train to come. Suddenly, without warning, a huge mob of people took off in a seemingly random direction, causing Marshal to get caught up as if swept away by the tide of the ocean. He couldn’t see through all the people, so he had no idea where he was going. After the mob eventually died down, Marshal was by himself, staring at a singular train in the middle of a dark platform. Realizing that the train that he wanted to catch was probably already gone by now, he weighed his options and decided to get on the train he was in front of, hoping he’d at least end up somewhere near the school.
When the doors closed behind him, the lights flickered a little. As soon as that happened, the device on Marshal’s belt began to shine with a bright light. Marshal, confused and more than a little bit frightened, tried to force open the door of the train car, to no avail. After a few seconds, the train started moving, but Marshal couldn’t really tell where he was going.
* * *
So, it seems that this device is responsible for me ending up here, Marshal concluded, staring down at the instrument of his disappearance which was casually hanging on his waist. But the question remains: Where is here? His thoughts were interrupted by a faint cracking sound. He looked down at the source of the noise: the egg he had found this morning. It began to wriggle and shake until it finally split in two, revealing a strange ball of smoke with two eyes and a big mouth. On top of its head, a flame was burning lightly.
“This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder,” Marshal muttered to himself.

"We're going home," a blonde haired girl bickered with her pet, walking toward the Trailmon Terminal. "I said we could get noodles again. There was no agreeing to explore in that." After all, there was nothing better than getting food for essentially free. Kai was right. This was the best way to feed a Digimon with a bottomless pit for a stomach.
The white and purple fox wrapped around her neck felt that this was insufficient, though. "But... But it'll be fun!" he attempted to reason, head tilting sideways to try to look the girl in the eyes. Any time he'd make eye contact, though, she'd turn her head to look to the side. "You can't just bring me here and not explore! We can't be heroes from the couch!"
Why couldn't they? They could just play video games, instead. There were plenty that involved being a hero. Still, Maia refused to answer this, pulling out her phone. Cell phone reception seemed kind of weird here. Sometimes, it seemed like it was perfect, and then it would cut out whenever she actually wanted to use it. Maybe it was just fate saying that any technology she'd touch would break. Wonder what that would mean for her Digimon? "No service," she mumbled, attempting to send a text to one of her friends in America, anyway. Who knew if, or when, they'd receive it, but it gave her a moment of peace from her Digimon.
"Who needs cell phones when you have nature, Maia?" the pipefox whined, dramatically throwing his head to one side. "Let's go check out the nature! The nature here! Where we don't have to question if everyone's a normal person and we just assume they're a Digimon!" While that logic was somewhat solid, it was also incredibly awful, and his tamer wasn't buying it.
Finally, they were at the terminal, and on the way to take the next train. Except, Kuu had new plans. Unwinding himself, he hopped off of the girl's shoulder's and began running. Oh no. Not again. Every time she thought the Digimon was under control, he'd run off! This time, at least, he announced, "Person! Hatchy-egg!" to his tamer before completely bolting. Hatchy-egg? That was a new term. Still, she hurried to follow the little monster, until it became apparent who he was running to.
Some guy was there, not really doing anything that Maia found particularly interesting. Still, her Rookie felt the need to run right up to his feet, hoping not to get stepped on in the process. This was going to be another one of those days, wasn't it? There was a short hesitation before she decided how to approach the situation. Oh, how talking to people wasn't really her thing. Why did Kuu always do this to her?
The guy appeared to be a similar age to her, but she was pretty positive she'd never met him. Then again, that wasn't such a hard thing to confirm, considering she didn't even know most of the people in her own class at school. Maybe, she needed to get out more. Though, Kuu seemed to be pretty determined to fix that these days. Especially since he was literally seconds away from trying to climb the stranger, in an attempt to see the smoke monster.
Catching up to the Digimon, she looked at the teen. At first, she had planned on just snatching up her partner and walking off, but the stranger looked kind of... confused? Maybe confused wasn't the right word. Then again, why just hang out at the station like this? It was a little weird. "H-hey," she mumbled out to the other human, using one of her feet to try to nudge Kuu away, but it was to no avail. Instead, he was hopping around, using the cartridge he was wrapped around as some form of grounding for the rest of him. "Is everything alright?"

Marshal had been standing there no more than thirty seconds when some white, weasel-looking creature sped over to him screaming something about "hatchy-eggs." At this point, nothing could surprise him anymore. What did surprise him, however, was the fact that a girl around his age popped up along with the creature, asking if he was alright.
"Well," he started off, taking a big sigh. "I was on my way to the train station to get to school, and I think I must have hopped on the wrong one. Not only that, but now I have this strange smoke monster floating around me, and this weird gadget strapped to my belt." He took the device off and showed it to her.
The smoke creature suddenly took a huge interest in Marshal's device and floated straight in front of it. All it could seem to say was, "Moku! Moku!" Then, out of nowhere, the device began to glow again, and the little guy with it.
"Mokumon digivolve to...Sunmon!"
When the glowing ceased, the smoke monster was no longer there. In its place floated a tiny orange creature in the shape of the sun. The flame on top of its head burned a little bit stronger than before. Taking a deep breath, Marshal turned to the pale blond girl who was also watching what was going on and not freaking out. "Do you know what's going on?" he asked her. "Can you help me?"

Listening to the stranger, Maia's eyes went wide. Wait, he was going to school? "Wh-what time is it?" she murmured, suddenly panicking. Pulling her phone out, she checked, only to sigh and shove it back into her pocket. "I'm never going to make it in time," she dismissed with a heavy sigh, watching as the next Trailmon shot off. Nope, definitely not now. "Guess I'm skipping again today," the blonde mumbled, meeting eyes with her Digimon, who was clearly thrilled.
"Yay! Full day with Maia!" he cheered, only to be nudged again with his tamer's foot. No. This wasn't yay. Her grades were going to drop from stupid things like this. Luckily, this had only made her second day missing class. Last time was because of that Impmon getting stuck in the school's broom closet. Was this going to become a recurring thing? She had planned to go back to her own world before class started! How'd she lose track of time so easily?
Tilting her head slightly, she watched as the smoke puff suddenly digivolved. "That was fast," she pointed out, eyes shifting up to boy. "So, you seriously ended up here on accident? You have no idea what's happening?" How was he handling this so well? Maia couldn't really complain, considering the last guy called her a witch and claimed that she used magic to change his phone into his Digivice. This was a warm welcome, as far as she was concerned.
But, where to start? "I do know what's going on, but you may need to sit," she advised, glancing around at the benches at the station. "I mean, it's pretty hard to believe. You're in a place called the Digital World. And that," what did it say it was? Oh! "Sunmon? It's your new best friend, also known as a Digimon." That was the best way to introduce the subject, right? "The gadget's a Digivice. Don't lose it, you'll need it." There was a pause, as she looked around, "uh... Any... specific questions?" After all, it was weird trying to tell someone about Digimon when they already rode one to get here!

"Digimon, huh?" Marshal muttered, sizing up Sunmon while also stealing glances at his Digivice. "Yeah, I guess I believe it. This little guy just showed up in my room this morning when I woke up. It just shot out of my computer screen. I'm not sure why."
"It's because we're partners, Marshal!" Sunmon shouted at him with a grin. He seemed friendly enough, at least.
"It's weird that you know my name," Marshal admitted, "but after what's been going on today, I'll believe anything is possible." He turned to the girl and outstretched his hand. "So, as he said, the name's Marshal. It's a pleasure to meet you. I know this is sudden, but would you be willing to help me figure out what I'm supposed to do next?"

Yeah, this guy was handling this way too well. Give it time. Surely, something had to phase him about the Digital World. "You... know you're awake, right?" Maia felt the need to confirm. "Like, no offense, but nobody in their right mind should seem this collected right now." After all, the girl had barely been able to hold still the entire first day of having a Digimon. Mostly because she was too much of a wreck to sit down, but part of it was just trying to chase down a dust bunny that was trying to eat everything in sight.
"I think most Digimon know their tamer's names pretty instantly. Kuu knew mine, too," she pointed out, in some attempt to keep the situation from getting a stalker vibe. "I'm Maia. That's Kuu," she made a quick motion to the Digimon on the ground, before reaching out to shake the other teen's hand. "I, uh, I'm not sure what you're hoping to do, but," there was a pause, meeting the stare of her wide-eyed Digimon. Ugh. He already knew that she wasn't just going to let some guy get himself killed in the Digital World because she wouldn't help him. Otherwise, the Rookie would probably start screeching and crying or something. "I mean, I guess I need to do something if I'm not going to be at class. So, sure.
To this, Kuu let out a high pitched squeal. He won! Yay! They were going to spend some time in his world! This was a huge success for such a little monster!
"I'll protect you," she half-teased. That wasn't how the role was supposed to be! Psh. Who needed gender stereotypes, anyway? "Except, I won't actually do that. Just, don't go poking any bears, okay?" That sounded more like the teen! She wasn't going to go trying to protect anyone that she didn't know! Unless Kuu made her, which was pretty much always. Luckily, those problems didn't really come up often. "Are you thinking you want to check out the city? Or explore someplace nearby? I... don't really advise going too far out, since there are some pretty scary monsters out there, and your Digimon can't handle them." What she wasn't going to add was that she didn't think Kuu could handle it either. After all, if she kept them someplace safer, like the city, it would stop most bad incidents from happening that would display too heavily her lack of faith in her companion's ability to keep two people safe.

Should I really be bothered by this? Marshal wondered, giving Maia a quizzical look as she spoke to him. I mean, I'm pretty sure this isn't a dream as it is, but anything different is better than another boring day at school. She seems genuinely concerned about me, though. At least she's kind enough to show me around the place.
"I guess I'm not all that concerned over it," he told her, crossing his arms. "I don't like getting upset over things. It's such a waste of energy, which feels like a precious commodity these days. Truth be told, I'm still half asleep as it is, so some of this hasn't fully registered with me yet. Why don't we check out this city you're talking about? " Marshal said, giving Maia a light smile. "I guess this makes you my bodyguard, right?" he teased back.
"I can come too, right?" Sunmon asked, suddenly feeling ignored.
"Of course!" Marshal said, looking over at the little Digimon and chuckling a little bit. "We're partners now, like you said, right? It would make sense that you would go places with me." Sunmon seemed to be content with that answer, so he floated right up next to Marshal, who could feel the warmth that the little creature radiated from its whole body.

The tamer placed a hand on her hip, listening to Marshall talk. Well, he seemed to be the opposite of her, then. Maia spent a lot more time than probably healthy stressing out about almost everything. Oh well, it wasn't like she was going to tell the newcomer that. "Guess we'll see if Terminus wakes you up, then," she managed a smirk, before brushing her hair off of her shoulders.
Taking that as a sign, her Digimon leaped onto her leg, whirling himself up her body until he was back in his preferred location, stretched across the back of her neck, cartridge and tail on one shoulder, while his paws and face were on the other. The blonde must have gotten used to such actions, considering she didn't even flinch at the sudden movements. Oh, good. Progress was being made.
"I'll only be your bodyguard if you don't start a fight with anything bigger than an In-Training," she paused, making a motion to the Sunmon, "which, is the level he's at, by the way." Oh, yeah, she hadn't thought to tell him about different levels on Digimon. She probably needed to do that! Maia swore, every time she explained Digimon to someone, she forgot more and more important details. First, she turned on her heel, motioning for Marshall and his partner to follow. "Yeah, you definitely want your Digimon on you at all times here. School might be a bad idea. Depends on how quiet he can be and if he'll light your backpack on fire," that was a good point. Before saying it, she hadn't really considered that there was a flame on the monster's head. Ooh, he might be hard to hide.
Still, she continued to walk away from the terminal and toward the city surrounded in walls, "So, you're going to need to know that there's a... level system for Digimon," she started, hoping the teen was listening. "He hatches at Fresh, then becomes In-Training, like now," the blonde paused, reaching up to scratch Kuu on the nose. Almost immediately, the monster went limp on her shoulder, making a thrilled almost purring-coo. "Then there's Rookies, like Kuu. Champions are next, with Ultimate, then Mega." The last one was a pretty new discovery for Maia, but she wouldn't mention that. After all, she'd only met one mega level Digimon so far, and it turned out to be twins in one body! "I'm sure you can figure that's from weakest to strongest."
Soon, they would reach the city, and the boy would see many different kind of Digimon of varying levels wandering the streets. Maia was particularly uncomfortable in the place, but found herself somewhat alright with visiting Makuramon's noodle cart from time to time. Probably only because she had already met him in the past. But, she'd already eaten with Kuu shortly beforehand. "Sorry if all the learning gets boring, by the way. If I forget something, I'm pretty sure you'll learn first-hand. It's better to know what you're jumping into, though."

Marshal's head was spinning. This Digimon business was a lot more complicated than he originally thought. "Feels like I should be taking notes," he joked. "Is this going to be on the test?" He chuckled lightly as they walked toward Terminus City.
