Hey, what's this thing?

Wandering around in the woods certainly wasn't her idea of a good time, but today Asuka was here on her own. The teenager wanted to get out for a bit, her cousin was staying for a few days and it was a little too noisy in her usually somber home. Thankfully this will come to an end soon, her cousin was leaving later today and everything will go back to normal again.
Right now though, she had to go all the way out here just for some peace and quiet. Well maybe it wasn't actually that far out of her way. But still more effort than what she usually had to do.
The brown-haired girl stopped. "This place seems nice," she told herself. There was sunlight shining through the leaves providing light but still enough shade for the air to feel cool. The area around her was silent and there were no stray noises, it was a step up from her bedroom. Even when there was nothing going on she could hear kids playing outside or cars driving by, there was always something. But here is was just birds chirping and the rustle of leaves in the wind. There was even a rock large enough for her to sit on while being smooth enough not to cause discomfort. All this in the supposedly haunted forest. Ha, not a single weird thing in sight. People could be so superstitious sometimes.
Taking off her bag, she pulled out her notebook and a couple pencils. While she was here she could work on a few of her sketches, or go over her notes from school some more. The first option was certainly the more appealing choice. Any unfinished sketches? Most of the ones were already finished and the ones she hadn't she didn't feel like drawing, maybe some other time. Was there anything interesting around to draw? None of the plants were particularly interesting, and the wildlife was keeping its distance. This place was pretty boring actually. Too bad those ghosts weren't making an appearance, she could use some inspiration right about now.
With a huff, Asuka packed her things back up. But first... She pulled out a marker and drew a cartoony flower on the rock. There, now she'd be able to recognize this place if she came back here. Well until it rains and washes the doodle away at least.
Walking off she went deeper into the forest, the trees around her increased in number and size, making the sun's light dimmer as she went along. This area wasn't traveled through often and a lot of the plants were overgrown, it was hard to navigate comfortably.
A root caught her foot and she tripped, she let out a soft but startled cry as she fell. The girl landed atop a shrub scrapping her arms quite a bit in the process. To get back on her feet, she pushed herself off the branches, but under her weight one of them broke sending her back down to the dirt.
"Great, just great," she muttered pushing herself back off the ground. But something caught her attention. In the shrub there was something just partially hidden. An egg? A really weirdly colored one way to huge to be a normal birds egg. She probably shouldn't disturb it... But she'd never heard of an animal who laid eggs like this, maybe it was a toy? That made sense, besides no animal would leave their egg out in a place like this, it would be found easily by a predator searching for food.
With that in mind she picked the thing up. It was warm, there was something weird about it. It didn't feel like a toy, but it couldn't be anything else though could it?
"Shoot!" Asuka really wanted to punch herself now. This thing was alive, and she had disturbed it's nest. On nature documentaries they said... They said that if you disturb a nest then a bird will abandon the egg and move on. It was how they avoided predators, they couldn't move the egg but they could save themselves and start over. If that was the case for whatever creatures home she just stumbled into, she just doomed this little creature before it could ever hatch.
"I'll... I'll think of something, don't worry, I'll fix this," she assured the egg as though it could hear her. If she put it back? Her scent would be all over the bush now as well as the egg she just had to pick up. Maybe that branch she broke was the one which kept it hidden and now any animal could come by and have itself a free meal. If she took it with her? She could look up online what this egg was, then maybe she could come up with the proper way to care for it. But what if she just wasn't equipped to help this egg? How could she? She didn't have a heat incubator or whatever this thing eats after if hatches. Maybe it's already dead...
Was it worth it? Worrying so much over some animal who was probably dead or going to die soon? She should just drop it and leave, but somehow that seemed too cruel. She was the one who messed this up, she should at least try to fix it.
She put the egg in her bag, she was glad there was room for it in there. She could carry it around with her and keep it warm until it either started to stink or it hatched. If it died at least she could say she tried, and she'd only have to wash out her bag to get the smell out. If it hatched, she'd have to raise it but that'd be something to worry about much later on. She'd do that research once she got home, someone out there had to know what this thing is. First though she'll need to find her way back out of these woods. Besides, it was about time to leave anyway. Dinner would be ready soon and she had to say goodbye to her cousin before her left finally. Too bad that if this thing lives things wouldn't get back to normal soon afterwards.
