OOC: This solo thread takes part as a flashback in Luke and Bellamy's previous life.
It had been a dull, overcast day over the Network Plains in that time. Halfway between the metropolis of Terminus City and the western district. The ground below was dry and dusty, the grass on each side of the road turning yellow and dry.
Well, at least it wasn't raining.
An Impmon was skulking along the road, fuming at his run of bad luck. Not only had he run into a gang of white knights that only wanted to end up spoiling his fun, but he was still sore from the beating they had given him. And on top of that, he was hungry too.
He hated that he had lost, hated that he was so weak. He couldn't even burn that stupid Gaomon or his Gabumon friend with his attacks. And why they were fighting him in the first place? It was something stupid there too, all Impmon wanted was a bit of fun. And since his afternoon nap in the park at Terminus City was interrupted by some annoying digimon interrupting his sleep by playing and yelling and keeping him awake, the devil digimon thought he might help them out by adding fireballs to the mix. But nooo, apparently that was 'evil' and 'nasty', even though he didn't hit any of them. They were too quick for him anyway.
And so here Impmon was, storming along the road west. Why? He didn't know. He thought that maybe if he came across a weak digimon and beat him up that he'd feel better. That normally worked. And hopefully they'd have food on them too, his stomach was growling too loudly for any sort of comfort.
Eventually he came across a possible target. An Elecmon was walking ahead of him. Impmon jogged a little to catch up to him. Even when he was standing behind him, he didn't turn around. Impmon grinned, this would be too easy.
"Hey, kid, wanna play a game?" he asked. The Elecmon was clearly young as he turned around, his eyes were somewhat wide and innocent and his fur was rich in colour.
"Hello..." the Elecmon said, nervously. "Um, no thanks, I have to be somewhere"
"Funny thing, this fireball has to be somewhere too" said Impmon, conjuring one up on his finger. "It'll be on your butt in a moment if you don't hand over what you've got in the bag"
"Oh... I see" said Elecmon, shivering a little, but he didn't seem to panic like Impmon was hoping. "Are you going to rob me?"
"No digisludge, Sherlock" said Impmon, his grin widening.
"...Why?" Elecmon asked, calmly. Impmon's grin faded.
"What the hell do you mean 'why'? I don't got a reason why I wanna take something from a weak digimon like you, that's just how the world works!" he snapped.
"...You look hurt, Impmon, are you alright?" Elecmon asked, clearly noticing the bruises and scuffs on Impmon's body. Impmon was by now very unnerved. The fireball faded.
"That's none of your business!" he snapped, a little too defensively. Elecmon smiled, cocking his head a little as he looked up at him. Even if Impmon was nearly a foot taller than him, he sure didn't seem like he was noticing the difference.
"I see" he said, as though he deduced something. Impmon conjured the fireball up again, he did not like the way this digimon was acting like he could see through him. "Well, I have some food if you'd like some, Impmon, you seem like you're hungry"
"S-shut up I'm not!" Impmon snapped, but his stomach said otherwise. Elecmon chuckled. This was too far. "Don't you freakin' patronize me!" he snarled and hurled the fireball. The Elecmon ducked to the side.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude" Elecmon said, his smile faded. "Hey, um, just a question, can you please calm down? I'd just like to talk to you"
Impmon wanted to say no and continue attacking, but... something about this digimon made him want to see what he had to say. Honestly he was not acting like any other digimon would... unless he was very powerful and hiding his power. But how could that be? This was just some pipsqueak Elecmon. Then again, what harm would it do?
"Alright, I'm listening" he said, folding his arms.
"Don't take this the wrong way, but... do you have any friends, Impmon?" Elecmon asked gently. Impmon glared at him. How dare he ask that. How... wait, there wasn't any pity in his eyes. Just curiosity.
"Hmph, like I need friends" Impmon said, sticking his nose in the air. "Lousy weak burdens that just run away when things get tough for them. They only pin you down in the end. And why do you care?!" he narrowed his green eyes. "Do you have any friends, Elecmon?"
"Well, no..." Elecmon said, scratching the back of his head a bit bashfully. "I'm kind of a dork... and a loser, digimon don't really want to be friends with me"
Impmon was feeling something strange in his chest. Was it... pity? Guilt? Sympathy? An onset of bronchitis?
"Yeah well, sucks to be you" Impmon said, although somehow saying that made the feeling get worse as Elecmon could only nod sadly. "...sorry, that was just mean" Impmon apologized at once. Wait why was he doing that?!
Before he could figure out his thoughts, Elecmon suddenly looked up and asked "Hey, do you think we could be friends?"
Impmon wanted to say the sentence "Hah, why would I wanna be friends with you?" in a haughty manner. But instead, somehow, the words came out in a more curious tone. "...Why do you want to be friends with me?" he asked. "I mean, I just attacked you and tried to rob you, why would you turn around and ask something like that?"
"Well, you're clearly not evil" said Elecmon. "If you were you would've probably burned me to death by now and taken my data. And... well... I guess I think everyone deserves a second chance. That and you have a fun way with words, and you look really..." he suddenly seemed as though he was at a loss for words.
"Really what, bunny-boy?" Impmon asked, folding his arms and looming over him. Elecmon still couldn't find the words. "Here I'll give ya hints. Badass? Awesome? Stylish? Heh of course you'd say that, this is a designer scarf ya know! And no I didn't steal it, I found it... at the dry-cleaner's"
"Really... cute" said Elecmon. Impmon was so startled that he had to step back. Elecmon immediately looked like he regretted saying that, lowering his gaze and folding his ears back.
"How the hell am I cute?!" Impmon snapped. "And what makes you think you have the right to judge anyone's cuteness? You're probably the most adorable digimon I've seen all week... AGH! Why did I say that?!"
Elecmon began to giggle. Impmon was just exasperated by now.
"Oh boy, look, let's just change the subject, alright?" Impmon said, wanting to get back to the point. "So... just summing up, we encountered each other, I attack you, you ask me to stop, I do so, we refresh, you say you wanna give me a second chance and be my friend, right?"
"Yeah, that's about it" said Elecmon. "Besides, you look really strong too... I get attacked a lot on this job, but, maybe you could help me?"
"Hmm. Well that's a better excuse" said Impmon, smiling. "Yeah I guess I am pretty strong. Well then. If you wanna be my follower, I guess I can let you hang around. But make no mistake, bunny-boy, you try anything that screws me over and we're through, okay?"
Elecmon nodded. "Yeah that's okay, I know we've gotta trust each other before we're really friends"
"Huh..." Impmon said, tilting his head curiously. "You're actually kinda serious about this aren't you?". The devil digimon was somewhat confused by all this. Not unpleasantly so, it was just... it didn't seem to add up. No other digimon he picked on ended up turning around and asked to be his friend before. Yet this guy was just opening himself right up... or was he? This Elecmon was smarter than he looked. But... well, what did Impmon have to lose? He could tell this guy to just blow off and he'd resume doing his own thing - romping around like a vagrant, getting beaten up by pious assholes... or he could hang out with this guy, try something new?
"Alright then" he said, eventually. "So, where you headed, bunny-boy?"
"Ah, right" Elecmon said, indicating his bag. "I'm delivering this bag of artifacts to a Mojyamon who lives out this way"
"Artifacts huh?" Impmon asked, interested. "Can I see?"
Elecmon nodded, taking off his bag and opening it. Impmon was instantly hoping to see some sort of precious jewels or golden valuables, but all that was in there was a bunch of broken stones.
"...Uh, you do realize they're just rocks right?" Impmon asked, picking one up.
"There's writing on them too" said Elecmon. Impmon shifted it and could see some scribblings on it. "It seems to be some sort of broken stone tablet. Mojyamon's hoping to put it together again so he can translate it"
"Huh, I see. You're an archaeologist eh?" Impmon asked, putting the stone back.
"Nah, I'm just a courier" Elecmon said, closing the bag. "I deliver all kinds of stuff"
"Okay, cool" said Impmon, shrugging. So that's why he was attacked so much. Hmm. That job sounded kind of intriguing, so maybe this companionship could work somehow? "I guess we're gonna head the rest of the way now?"
"Stop right there!!" a new voice shouted from behind him from the direction of the city. Impmon froze, a sick feeling crawling up his stomach. That voice... that pompous prick of a digimon. He turned and saw him, the Gaomon that had beaten him up yesterday.
"Piss off, dog boy, this is none of your business!" Impmon snapped at him. The Gaomon stormed closer.
"It is my business when I see a scumbag like you threatening innocent digimon!" he shouted. "I know how bullies like you work, Impmon, someone stronger than you kicks your ass and you go around picking on weaker digimon, right?!"
The irony was that this Gaomon was completely correct, that had been what Impmon had intended at first. But now things had changed.
"E-excuse me..." Elecmon said, nervously but loud enough to be heard. "Impmon's not attacking me. He's helping me do my job"
"You expect me to believe that?" Gaomon said, flexing his fists, the leather on his boxing gloves creaking. "That's likely something Impmon forced you to say, and you're scared he'll attack you if you tell me the truth"
Impmon sighed. This had gone on far enough. He turned to his new friend. "Look, pal, just head on your way, okay? This is not gonna work out well. I don't want you getting involved in this, alright?" Maybe if Elecmon just went off on his own, that might be enough for this stubborn blue idiot to figure out he was telling the truth.
"But..." Elecmon said, hesitantly. Impmon scowled at him. Geez, this was so annoying. Why couldn't he just go?
"You just can't learn your lesson can you?" Gaomon asked, stepping forward. "Fine. I'll give you a repeat of what I gave you yesterday. Double Backhand!"
Impmon bit his lip as the Gaomon began to spin like a tornado, heading straight toward him.
"I said get lost you jerk!" he shouted, conjuring a fireball in his paw. "Badda boom!"
It was no use, the wind from the attack was so intense that the fireball simply dissipated. Impmon was struck hard on the side of the head, knocking him down.
"Stop it Gaomon!" Elecmon shouted. "He's not hurting anyone!"
"If you believe that then you're an idiot!" Gaomon spat back. "Did you see what he was doing yesterday?! Do you think a digimon that lobs fireballs at innocent victims and thinks it's funny is a good digimon?!"
"What...?" Elecmon asked, looking at Impmon, who was struggling back to his feet. "Is that true?"
"Yeah I did it... but... Elecmon, I don't wanna be like that anymore" Impmon said, clenching his teeth. His vision was blurred a little, that hit must have concussed him a little. "Look, you said you'd give me a second chance, right? I want to be a better person!"
"You shut your lying face!" Gaomon snapped, and punched him in the gut, sending him down again. "Digimon like you make me sick! Not only do you do have to be a bully, but you take advantage of good digimon as well!"
"I..." Elecmon said, taking a step forward, his voice got louder and angrier at every syllable. He began to break out into a run. Electricity was surging through his body. "...Said... STOP!!"
He charged shoulder-first into the Gaomon, delivering a powerful electric tackle. It was the canine digimon's turn to be sent crashing onto the dusty ground. But almost immediately, the big digimon got straight back up. Elecmon backed away nervously. Now he was in trouble.
"So you're on his side are you?!" the Gaomon snapped. "Fine! I'll give you something to think about too before you join up with him as his partner in crime!" he began to spin again, approaching with another Double Backhand.
"Sparkling Thunder!" Elecmon shouted, leaning forward on all fours, sending a bolt of blue lightning from his tail feathers. Unlike Impmon's fireball, the wind did not dissipate it. Gaomon was stunned, his attack stopping.
"You'll regret that!" he snarled, and ran forward, his fist drawn back.
"Semper Fire"
There was a clicking noise, followed by an almighty burst of fire that shot through the air right in front of Gaomon's nose. His fur was smoldering where it brushed past. He turned to see Impmon standing sidelong, holding his paw out in front of him, which was glowing with orange energy.
"I swear to god, Gaomon, I will kill you if you hurt him" Impmon promised in a deadly whisper.
There was nothing else for the canine digimon to do but retreat. He turned on his heel and stormed away in defeat. Two angry digimon, both capable of ranged combat, were too much for him. Elecmon and Impmon watched him, before they approached each other at last.
"Are you okay, Impmon?" the rabbit digimon asked, concerned.
"I think so..." Impmon said, holding a hand to his head where he was hit. It ached a little, but it didn't seem to be broken. His gut still hurt like hell though, that and his vision was still slightly blurred. "I'll be fine. How about you? He didn't hit you did he?"
"No, I think I'm fine..." Elecmon said. Although he didn't know if the adrenaline still in his system was dulling the pain, even if it was there.
"Alright..." Impmon said. There was an awkward silence for a moment before he finally had to give in and say what was only polite. "I just wanna say... thanks, Elecmon. Nobody's ever done that for me before, you know, sticking up for me"
"Heh, no problem, buddy, that's what friends do" Elecmon said, smiling up at him, putting the courier bag back over his shoulder. "Although... are there gonna be problems with other digimon out this way?"
"Well..." Impmon scratched the back of his head nervously. "There's probably one or two digimon out there that thinks of me the same way as that Gaomon... or four, or... twenty"
"I see. Well, I guess we're just gonna have to convince them that you're not like that anymore, right?" Elecmon said, pleasantly. Impmon folded his arms, looking away a little poutily.
"Yeah yeah whatever" he said. "Come on, let's get moving, I don't wanna have another incident like that"
"Okay" Elecmon agreed, beginning to walk forward. "You know, there's a great roadside cafe near Mojyamon's place. I could buy you a meal if you like"
Impmon was pleased to hear that. "Alrighty, now we're talking. Lead on my mon~" he put an arm around Elecmon's shoulders. "Heh, wow, your fur's really soft" he said, impressed.
"Hehe, thanks. You know it's softer on my tummy..." Elecmon said, winking.
"Hah, you beast digimon are all the same, I bet you just wanted me to be your friend in the first place so I'd pet you lovingly, is that right?" Impmon mussed the fur between his ears. "Fluffy little bunny boy wanna be coddled and stroked?" he tickled his belly for a moment, causing Elecmon to giggle. "Huh, wow, you're right" the devil digimon remarked.
"Well... that among other things" Elecmon said, sheepishly. "Mainly I'd like someone cool to talk to. And two digimon are better in combat than one, right?"
"Eh, you got that right" Impmon said, folding his arms behind his head.
"Yeah, it'll be fun" said Elecmon, patting Impmon's back. "Huh, wow, your fur's pretty soft too"
"Of course it is" Impmon scoffed. "I take good care of it to make it as glossy as it is. And if you continue to pat me like that I swear to Yggdrasil I'll start enjoyin' it"
Elecmon laughed. Impmon was starting to like the sound of him when he did that. Already he was feeling... really good about having a friend.
And so the companionship of the two digimon began in earnest. Both independent digimon were beginning to bond quite closely. Many adventures awaited them ahead, full of fun times, shenanigans, dangerous escapades, and in the end, tragedy. But this is how the relationship between the two began. The beginnings of a bond that would eventually lead to them becoming twins. But for now, that part of the story will come later.

"Really... cute" said Elecmon.
