This thread takes place in the past.
Characters: Impy and Leky (Bellamy and Luke's old forms).
"Oho! Yes, these are the forms I requested!"
Impmon folded his arms irritably as the withered old tree in charge of this nursery saw the post that was delivered to him. This was the latest in his and his friend Elecmon's jobs as Couriers - delivering post by hand all over the digital world. At first, he thought it sounded fairly exciting, handling sensitive secret documents meant for the eye of the beholder only, where digital communication would be unwise. But in reality, all it was was for boring stuff like delivering order forms and requesting written confirmation to agreements that had already been made.
This latest one took the cake with how tedious it was. All he and Elecmon did was deliver a few forms for Old Man Cherrymon to sign to confirm tradesmons to help build a new playset for the babies. Now Impmon wouldn't have minded if he would be hanging around to see it be built, but no, their job now was to return the forms back to Terminus City so they'd send the worker digimon over and send them off on another boring errand.
And of course they had the nerve to patronize them by never sending them anywhere exciting. Of course, they had flying digimon for that sort of work. No, they were pretty much given crappy jobs and got paid scraps for it. Their latest adventure? 150 bits. Hardly enough for the Trailmon back home.
As Impmon and Elecmon left the village back toward the station, Impmon made a request.
"Hey Leky, how 'bout we hang out in the station pub for a moment?"
"Oh? Yeah, sure thing, Impy" said Elecmon, shrugging. "I wouldn't mind a quick drink"
"Alrighty then". The two digimon entered the refreshment bar at the Trailmon station. It was a fairly lively place, Trailmons usually came by at least three times a day - mainly to pick up digimon who had grown to their rookie levels within the Village to take them elsewhere. So if they missed this train, they could hang around for the next. But before then, Impmon wanted to talk to his friend about something that was bothering him. He struggled to come up with how to word it delicately, but thankfully Elecmon solved that problem.
"Are you okay, Impy? You don't look really happy..." Elecmon said, looking up at his friend.
"Well..." Impmon hesitated on letting his feelings be known. However, Elecmon hadn't yet been made upset by anything he said so far, so he thought that honesty would be the best approach here. "I just can't help but think we may be wastin' our potential here"
"What do you mean by that?" Elecmon asked, turning to face him properly. Impmon sighed, he didn't want this to be so hard to get across, but he held back his sarcasm and spoke as nicely as possible.
"Just... you and I, we're really tough digimon, right?" he said. "And... this courier job we have. It ain't really a challenge is it? I mean no bandit's messed with us since I joined ya, and of course we don't carry anythin' valuable enough in the first place. Just forms and little goods. We're like digimon postmen..."
Elecmon's face was passive through this, but he didn't seem at all happy where this conversation was going.
"I mean, don't get me wrong, Leky, I love spendin' time with ya" Impmon continued. "I meant it when becoming friends with you was the best thing that happened to me in my life". Elecmon smiled a little at this. "But... I just gotta say, pal, I think we can do better"
"But we're just rookie levels, obviously we can't start right from the top" Elecmon said, hesitantly, although there was enough doubt in his expression for Impmon to continue trying to convince him.
"Yeah I know that, but, if we stay at the bottom doing the boring jobs, we won't ever get anywhere near the top" he said. "We gotta reach up and grab the opportunity! We gotta look for a challenge and rise to it, you know what I'm sayin'?"
"Yeah... I get ya" said Elecmon, looking a little more won over. "So did you have anything in mind, Impy?"
"As a matter of fact, I do!" said Impmon, and slid off his stool. "Come on, I'll show ya" he led Elecmon toward the notice board. Elecmon approached it curiously.
"There, see that?" Impmon said, pointing up at a small bounty notice. Elecmon read, his eyes widening.
"The Bandit BlackGabumon has been caught stealing goods from this station multiple times... 300 bits are offered for his capture" he read. "Impy... that's mercenary work. We can't do that"
"Why not?" Impmon asked, folding his arms. "It pays twice as much as the job we just did, and we have some time to kill, why don't we go kick his ass?"
"Well... firstly, we have no idea where he is" Elecmon argued. "Where would we even start? He's a thief so obviously he's gonna hide if two digimon are looking for him"
"Heh. That's where you're in luck" Impmon said, closing his eyes and holding his nose high with pride. "I happen to know exactly where that dirty thief is hiding. So if you'd like to follow me and cover my six, I'll get us another 300 bits!"
"Impy, wait! I didn't agree to this..." Elecmon said hesitantly, but Impmon was walking with such confidence that he couldn't help but feel a little assured that this was under control. He followed at a jog, wondering what Impmon was up to.
To his surprise, Impmon marched straight back over to Primary Village. Cherrymon seemed to have headed to another part of the village, which Impmon supposed was a good thing, he didn't really want to deal with the old guy.
"Impy, why are we here?" Elecmon asked. "Did you see him?"
Elecmon watched as Impmon slowly walked among the cradles in the village, smiling at the babies within. Until all of a sudden, he roughly kicked one of the cribs hard so that it flew into the air.
"Impy! What are you doing?!" Elecmon yelled with horror. But this soon faded when he saw why he had done that. Flying out of the crib, crashing to the ground, was a small BlackGabumon. Far too large to have been a proper baby at the village.
"Flank him, Leky!" Impmon shouted. Elecmon nodded and did as he was told, getting behind the digimon while Impmon approached from the front.
"So, Hornhead, you've been a naughty boy haven't you?" Impmon asked, giving a devilish grin as he approached, fireball in his hand. "Ya got two options. Come with us quietly, or I'm gonna do somethin' to ya. And I'd rather not because I can't stand the sound of babies cryin'... oh that and you'd probably bring old man Cherrymon over"
BlackGabumon chose to respond by making a run for the woods. But Elecmon sprang into action, chasing after him on all fours. Just as BlackGabumon hit the treeline, Elecmon made a running jump, his fur full of electricity, and he tackled into the pelt-wearing lizard from the back, immediately stunning him with his electrified charge.
"Phew, nice work, Leky" Impmon said, taking a rope out of his bag. He then tied the Gabumon's wrists together behind his back before he could recover from his shock. And by the time he did, he was fully restrained.
"Ya just gotta do things the hard way don't ya?" Impmon asked, as the two of them led their captive back to the station to face his crimes.
The bounty was paid surprisingly quickly and gratefully by the station master. And even though that little diversion was much more than Elecmon had bargained for, he felt much better about coming out of the day 450 bits ahead rather than a measley 150 bits. This money would do wonders for their equipment.
"So Leky..." Impmon said as they relaxed at the bar for a well deserved drink, waiting for the next train. "What do you reckon eh? Do you think we can work out as mercenaries?"
"Well..." Elecmon was still a bit hesitant. "I don't know, I mean... yeah, it does pay well, and we are a good team, but... it's a really violent and risky job isn't it?"
"That's what bein' a digimon's all about, pal" Impmon said, simply. "There's lots of evil scum in the world that go around hurtin' and killin' things just for the hell of it. Are we just gonna sit around and run errands all the time? Or are we gonna start making a difference? Sure, we'll be startin' out small, but mercenary digimon evolve really fast, and before long we'll help keep the peace all over the world"
"Whoa, hold on, Impy, slow down there, pal" said Elecmon, thinking that sentence went a bit too fast. Impmon was too excited and a little tipsy to be coherent.
"Come awn, the things I can't burn you zap, and the things you can't zap I badda-boom! We're a match made in heaven! I bet we could beat adult levels with our power, heck, we could even digivolve ourselves once we get enough strength! So how 'bout you drop in a resignation for your lousy paperboy job and we can get jobs as Mercenaries!"
"Well... it looks like it'd make you really happy, right, Impy?" Elecmon said. He didn't really see any way how he could put it off any longer. Plus Impmon was right, he wasn't really going to amount to anything if he just walked around being a courier all the time. And he was right about the money too. A Mercenary's wages were much higher, while on his Courier wages, he was barely making ends meet for him and his friend.
"Alright... then, I guess..." he said eventually. "Do we have to sign up for anything?"
"Great!" Impmon beamed. "Uhh... no, we just see a bounty on boards in bars like this one, take it, then get the job done" he smiled. "Don't worry, if you don't feel comfortable about a job, we won't take it. We'll be digimon for hire, doin' real jobs. It'll be great!"
Elecmon smiled. It was hard not to, especially when he hadn't seen Impmon this excited since he met him. It was then that a Trailmon's horn could be heard in the distance.
"Welp, that's our ride!" said Impmon, the two digimon gulping down the rest of their drinks, then paid what was owed. He and Elecmon staggered a little onto the platform, then showed their tickets and boarded. They found a compartment all to themselves, gladly occupying it, relaxing as they prepared for the overnight journey back home.
"I hope there's some good jobs there for tomorrow" Elecmon said, yawning and stretching, before finally relaxing. The small rabbit digimon had drunk a bit too much, and was teetering on the brink of sleep from his exhaustion of the day.
"Heh heh, aw, bunny-boy's all tired out, eh?" Impmon asked, grinning as Elecmon leaned on him. He didn't reply, only beginning to snore quietly. Impmon's grin turned into a look of adoration. He put an arm around his friend.
"I've got your back, pal" he said, quietly. In a way, this day seemed to be the start of something he had always dreamed of. Finding a job where he'd get paid to wipe criminal scum off the face of the world, doing it side-by-side with his best friend. And the first job done successfully? That filled him with happiness.
As the dim dusk light outside the windows faded, Impmon began to daydream of where they'd be a year from now. Would they be Perfect levels? Or even Mega? Perhaps digimon all over the world would hear of his and Elecmon's feats and heroics and want to join up to serve them? Impmon grinned at the thought. Fame, fortune and power were all up ahead. And all he and his 'partner' had to do was to keep at it.
Yeah... that word seemed good enough to describe what they were. Impmon and Elecmon - Partners. At least it made better sense than those lousy human 'partnerships' that just involved the digimon doing all the dangerous work while the human hides behind a rock. That wasn't a partnership.
Now two digimon fighting with Fire and Lightning in perfect sync to overwhelm and defeat their opponents? That was more Impmon's scene. Before the day he had met Elecmon he thought he could do so alone, but of course he had weaknesses. Weaknesses that no longer felt that bad when Elecmon was around to cover them.
His enterprising daydreams soon turned into dreams for real, and the devil digimon soon followed his best friend to sleep.
