Night Owls [TEASER] [Maia]

There was one place that Marshal's parents had always told him not to go alone, and that was Shibuya's Entertainment District. At least, what was left of it anyway. The place was seriously a wreck, and nothing had been done to fix it in a long time. A few Tamers that had been coming back from strange episodes of disappearances had made mention of an incident with Digimon that transpired here many years ago, but Marshal was never able to learn more about it.
Luckily, his parents couldn't get mad at him this time. He wasn't alone, after all. He had Coronamon with him! The two of them checked the area for anything sketchy, as recent incidents were still in Marshal's memory, as well as Coronamon's. The two enterred the restricted area quietly, to avoid getting caught by any authorities. Coronamon's Holosuit was also turned off, as it was the middle of the night and there was no need for him to hide his true identity.

With only cell phone light illuminating the blonde's face, Maia didn't seem to be paying much attention to her surroundings. Occasionally, there was a sigh, and some tapping on the screen. Finally, the Kudamon on her shoulder curled close to her neck, peering at the little monitor. "Mom still angry that I wouldn't eat that spider?"
"She's not your--" Maia paused, exhaling heavily, yet again. "I don't know why she thinks you're like a cat, or something." Finally, silencing her phone, the tamer shoved it into her bag. "It's been hours." After Maia's mother had gone into full-blown tantrum mode, the girl had taken her Digimon and fled from the house for a while, in hopes of allowing the woman to calm down. It really didn't seem to be helping, but maybe if she didn't respond to her texts for a while, things would blow over.
Then, there was a pause in her thoughts, as the teen finally looked around the area. It seemed that focusing on one's phone long enough left them plenty lost! "Kuu, where are we?" Really, Maia should have been used to this kind of thing by now. After all, she had spent the past several months getting lost all over an alternate world! But, why did everything look so different in the dark?
Stopping in her tracks, the girl began to look around a little more closely. This certainly wasn't a friendly looking area! Kuu was quick to be helpful, chirping, "oh, we passed some signs that said 'Do Not Enter' a little while ago! So, I think it's the City of Do Not Enter!" If only the little monster understood that signs didn't always indicate the name of a location.
Either way, none of this looked particularly great. "If Mom hears about this, she's going to kill me." Why couldn't anything go Maia's way, for once?

Marshal and Coronamon were doing a decent job of staying undetected, but freaked out slightly when they heard two voices approaching them. They stuck to the shadows until they discovered that the approaching voices weren't cops, but were actually Maia and Kuu!
"Hey," Marshal shout-whispered from the shadows. "Keep it down, you two! We're on a mission here." Maybe that was the wrong move. What if Maia freaked out and gave away their position? Coronamon certainly wasn't happy with his Tamer's plan, and facepalmed accordingly.

Hearing a random voice in the dark was not something that Maia ever wanted to hear. Cringing, the tamer froze up, as millions of different horror-movie situations went through her head. At least she wasn't the one screaming though.
"Eeee--Mmmpphh!" Kuu, on the other hand, was more than thrilled to be terrified enough to make loud sounds. At least, until his tamer clamped her fingers down on his little nose to silence him.
Taking a few more moments to collect herself, the tamer let out a couple of heavy breaths. Okay, Kuu might have scared her more than the mysterious voice, at this point! Except, now that she was thinking about it, that voice didn't seem so mysterious at all! Looking around, she spotted the source.
Trying to lower her tone, the girl began to move toward the other tamer and his Digimon. "Marshal?" Taking a hint from the prior shushing, the girl tried to keep her voice to a whisper, "What are you doing out here? What kind of mission?" That was just sketchy! Who went out in the middle of the night for some mystery mission in a restricted zone?

Marshal knew Maia would be a little freaked out. That was totally understandable; Marshal would feel the same way if it was anyone else in his shoes. "This is what Coronamon and I have been doing for the past six months," he explained. His voice was deep and hushed, and he had a completely serious look on his face unlike anything Maia had probably seen from him before. "The incident that happened in the Village of Beginnings wasn't just some random occurence."
"Something's up," Coronamon continued quietly. "Marshal and I have been slowly combing the Digital World for clues, and word from older Tamers and Digital World inhabitants has told us that this place is the epicenter of a lot of digital distortions." At that moment, Coronamon felt something change in the air around him, but he couldn't figure out what.

Shifting closer to Marshal and his Digimon, Maia listened to their explanation. She glanced around, seeming relatively unimpressed. "So, you guys just decided to waltz into a restricted area, alone, to hope for something potentially dangerous." While maintaining a quiet tone, it was clear that the statement was meant to try to bring some sense to the duo. "And, don't either of you dare tell me that you're not alone because your partner's here."
There was a sigh, as the girl shook her head. "You really need to be careful, doing this kind of thing." Coming from the girl that had accidentally wandered into a restricted area, it seemed that buddies were definitely necessary for this area! Let alone if 'digital distortion' is in the descriptor!
Kuu shifted, sniffing the air. "They're not alone now, anyway. We'll stick with you guys!" Well, that didn't sound negotiable! Even Maia knew she couldn't get her fox out of this plan, and she wasn't intending on leaving without him! Still, there was another motion to clamp down his mouth, as the little Rookie was failing horribly at being quiet.
"Well, I guess it gives Mom more time to cool off," she sighed, again, unable to think of a single thing to change the Kudamon's mind. Eyes shifted to Marshal, for one more statement of, "but, next time you plan on creeping around dangerous areas -- night or not -- text me or something. Okay?" If people were going to do stupid things, the least they could do was invite her! Whatever logic that may be, the idea seemed to make the teen feel a little better about it. She'd hate for something to randomly eat the other tamer and his partner, after all.

Marshal smiled. It was...kind of nice that Maia at least cared about his well-being. Sometimes it felt like he just annoyed her with his proclivity towards getting into trouble, but deep down the two of them had really bonded over their shared experiences, or it least it felt that way to Marshal. He reminded himself to make an effort to hang out with Maia more often. Quietly, he and Coronamon snuck their way deeper into the ruins of the entertainment district when a sudden noise caught their attention.
"We've got company," Coronamon muttered. Tamer and Digimon rushed to the source of the sound to find a familiar, yet unpleasant sight. The same Digimon from the Village of Beginnings was there. In the Real World. The group didn't even need to make a sound for it to take notice of them. Without a word, he touched a claw to the air in front of him, then disappeared as quickly as he had been found.
"Hey!" Marshal shouted, but it was too late. Meanwhile, where the strange Digimon had been, a strange distortion began to form, appearing as a tear in the fabric of reality. From the other side of the distortion, a hollow roar could be heard coming closer to the party. It sounded strangely mechanical, yet still incredibly terrifying. None of them could have any earthly idea what they were about to be in for.

At least Marshal seemed to have no problems with the additional company. Maybe he just knew that there was no way to talk Kuu out of something. Regardless, Maia found herself keeping one hand close to her Digimon's mouth, in the case that she needed to silence him, while creeping about the entertainment district. This felt wrong on so many levels! What if someone found them out here? Or, if a giant Digimon found them, instead. Talk about terrifying thoughts!
And, on the thought of Digimon... It seemed that nobody was too far off on their thoughts! Seeing the monster, Maia cringed slightly. Kuu was quick to puff up, sliding forward on his tamer's shoulder to go into defensive mode. But, at this second, it didn't seem entirely necessary. Because it had already left! "What..?" That just seemed weird!
More weird was the distortion. Taking a step back, the blonde looked to Marshal, "please, tell me that I was just hearing a really big, uh, truck pass by, or something." Of course, that couldn't be the case. She knew wandering around here was a bad idea! Why didn't the tamer ever succeed in talking people out of bad situations? Maia should have tried to convince Marshal to go home, instead of just tagging along. How did she even think that walking around with him was going to prevent some sort of horrible circumstance?
"I didn't know trucks could roar," the fox quipped, throwing a glance to Coronamon. "What is a truck, anyway?"

Well, this most certainly wasn't a truck. With another roar, a huge mechanical dragon Digimon bursted through the tear in space. A quick look at Marshal's D-Arc revealed that it was Chaosdramon, a Mega level Digimon. Marshal was mortified. There was no way this was really happening right now! Having the giant Brachiomon appear in the city was bad enough, but now Mega Digimon were able to make it between the worlds like this? "Marshal!" Coronamon shouted, trying to snap his Tamer out of the daze he was currently in. Meanwhile, Chaosdramon readied the giant cannons on its back, with two insanely powerful-looking beams of energy charged up to shoot at the group. After a quick moment of reflection, Marshal realized that the entertainment district was already in shambles, so no one would really notice if a little bit more of it got ruined, right? As if resigned to what was about to happen, Marshal grabbed his Digivice and clutched it tightly in his hand. "Let's go, then, Coronamon!" he shouted, thrusting his arm into the sky. A brilliant light shone out from the D-Arc, heralding Coronamon's most powerful transformation. "Coronamon Warp Digivolve to...Aldamon!"As the Digivolution finished, Chaosdramon finally let his attack loose, shooting a gigantic laser shooting through the night. Without hesitation, Aldamon held out his palm and shouted out, "Dragon Fang Shot!" A huge fireball in the shape of a dragon rocketed towards the incoming laser. The two attacks cancelled each other out in an explosion that rocked the whole area.

Marshal wasn't the only one that had fallen into a daze upon seeing what they were up against. Maia had scanned the Mega-level Digimon also, and was busy panicking. Even fight or flight couldn't get the tamer to move more than an inch backwards. What a problem!
Unlike Coronamon, however, Kuu wasn't even going to bother yelling at Maia. She would probably crumble worse if he was stressing her out! And, hey, Kuu could be pretty darn stressful! Sliding forward, the only thing to bring the teen back to Earth was feeling the Kudamon's cartridge kick off of her shoulder. Was the rookie seriously intending on taking on a Mega-level Digimon in that form?
With flashbacks to the level difference when a certain Arachnemon had attacked in the real world, months ago, it seemed that the tamer was just not prepared for any of this. To the point that when her own digivice lit up, she turned the screen to herself, trying to muffle the light with her shirt. Was Kuu intending on trying to match levels with Cor--Aldamon? This just wasn't alright!
It seemed that, regardless, the connection between a digivice and it's monster was a bit stronger than fabric could shield, as the Kudamon lit up, body beginning to alter to fit a taller form. "Kudamon, digivolve to--"
But, the panic set in. "Stop!" Data froze around the partner, with the command. Whatever Kuu had intended on turning into had... actually listened? If only for a moment. Did she break it?
And then, the particles flickered bright pink, rapidly slamming into place to form a different beast. The monster stumbled forward with the evolution coming to an end, letting out a growling, "Kyukimon." This was not what he had wanted. Narrowed eyes shifted to look at Maia, while she worked on catching her breath.
There she was, actively holding back her partner again. Amber eyes shifted to avoid looking at her own partner, and instead stared at Marshal. Lips parted once, before slowly shutting. There were too many things to say, and none of them seemed to fit. Maybe it was best to just stay quiet.

Marshal realized that fighting at this level in the Real World was a serious risk, and as much as the battlefield was fitting for this type of combat, he knew that they had to keep this threat contained. "Aldamon, try to push him back into that portal!" he ordered.
"You got it!" Aldamon agreed confidently. He flew low to the ground straight at Chaosdramon and shot some light blasts from his arm-mounted weapons at the invading monster. The attacks just seemed to bounce off the armor of Chaosdramon.
Marshal noticed that Kuu was seemingly unhappy with only evolving to Ultimate, which Marshal admittedly hadn't seen from the two of them. It was strange, almost like...
He looked back over his shoulder at Maia. "Are you holding Kuu back from Digivolving?"

At least Aldamon seemed to be trying. Kuu was busy staring down his tamer, not entirely sure on how to act. "Am I... still supposed to do the fighting thing?" This seemed like a legitimate enough question. Either way, the Digimon was looking thoroughly confused. He didn't want to make Maia upset any further!
There was a deep breath from the blonde, as eyes fell on her from the other tamer. Crap. ""I, uh." Take another breath, Maia! How was she just supposed to flat-out say that she was willingly letting down the team? Heck, Maia and Kuu were supposed to be more experienced than Marshal and Coronamon! This was just messed up! Finally, turning her eyes away from Marshal, she responded with a mumbled, "possibly."
How was she supposed to know that she could actually stop his evolution?!
"I didn't know that it was, uh -- that it would work." Since when did Kuu actually listen to her?!

Marshal was confused at first, but could rationalize Maia's hesitation. Fighting in the Real World was probably difficult. "Listen, let's just get this guy back into the Digital World, then we can go all out!" he told her.
Aldamon was waiting for some assistance from Kuu, but he didn't seem to know what to do without Maia's support. The relationship between Kuu and his Tamer seemed to be very different from how Marshal and Coronamon interacted, so he didn't really pressure any of them to help, though the struggling Chaosdramon was definitely incentive to ask for help. The giant Mega prepared another laser to shoot out while Aldamon pushed harder to get his enemy back into the portal.

Slowly, fingers rose to cover the tamer's mouth. This was incredibly embarrassing. It really didn't make any of this situation better! While Maia went to open her mouth, it snapped shut again. Oh, it seemed she had lost her voice again. Instead, there was a loud, shaky breath, and a nod, before she lifted her fingers for a simple sign toward her Digimon. Go
Kuu, having a sickle jammed in his mouth, felt the need to comply without many words. Fussing with the object, he ran toward the Chaosdramon, hoping to make up for some of the lost time that Aldamon had been holding the monster back for. Completely ignoring the charging of the lasers, the digimon shouted, "Alda! Coming in hot!" Picking up speed, the bewitching beast announced, "Sanrensei!"
While normally, the attack wasn't designed to be used as a push, he imagined it could at least help. Sure, being an Ultimate wasn't the best advantage, but maybe his weight could help some, with blades as a better incentive than any.
In the meantime, Maia chose to sign Sorry to Marshal, despite the fact that she was almost positive that he had no idea what it meant.

Marshal had been hanging around Yuu and the rest of PROFIT long enough to at least pick up on a little bit of sign language, so when Maia tried to tell him she was sorry, he just smiled. "Don't be," he told her. "Consider this our way of paying you back for all the times you helped us out!"
Kuu's attack, while not doing a whole lot to damage Chaosdramon, was good enough to stop the charging attack that surely would have decimated even more of the area. Disoriented, Chaosdramon finally staggered a bit, and Aldamon was able to push him back into the portal.
Marshal shouted in joy, but quickly realized that the portal was starting to become unstable. Without hesitation, he grabbed Maia by the arm and took off running, trying to get through the portal before they got separated from their Digimon. He figured that would be the best course of action, seeing as the poor girl could barely speak at the moment, let alone run to catch a fading portal to the Digital World. Or at least, he hoped it would be the Digital World. He didn't really have time to sweat the details at this point.
