Strangely enough, Folder Desert wasn't as hot today.
Okay, okay, maybe that was an understatement; the place was just hot enough for Yuu to not to melt under the radiant sun. Didn't mean that she enjoyed the temperature or anything of the like, but... what she could say. This humid wasteland deciding to cooperate with her, even if just a little, was good enough. Now, they had business to do.
Or at least she thought they had. It wasn't in the mute's nature to doubt her partner, but the very least she could do was to frown upon her destination of choice.
["So... are you sure that what you're searching is in this this place?"] Kyo wasn't one for practical jokes, that's for sure. Her humor was strange, but it wasn't twisted enough to lead them here. Especially since she was sweating too.
"Yup, as sure as I'll ever be!" The Plotmon seemed to be absolutely certain about this. At least that was kind of assuring.
["There's really nothing to discuss, then. Let's get to work."] They'd get some supplies in the oasis first, just in case their search took longer than expected and then they'd begin their quest.
What they were searching? The blonde wasn't even sure, but she knew that if her otherwise relaxed partner took interest in this, it would surely be something worth searching for.

It was strange... and scary. How had she ended up in this place? Unica thought hard about it, furrowing her eyebrows together the same way she had seen her mommy do when she was trying to remember something difficult. It was no use. One minute she had been on her way to the train station and the next minute she was in the middle of a hot desert. She looked around for a familiar face, but couldn't see anyone - only the golden brown sand extending for miles in every direction. Tears brimmed in her eyes, but she wiped them away in a fit of frustration. "Don't cry, be strong," she said to herself, echoing the words her mother would always tell her. Unfortunately, words only comforted her so much. After looking around for a second time and confirming that fact that she was, in fact, alone in a strange world, she began sobbing. "Mommy! Daddy!" she cried out, stumbling back toward where she thought she had come from.
Upon reaching the crest of a nearby dune, Unica was out of breath and let herself sit down with a huff. The tears had stopped flowing in exchange for sweat which now coated her small body, but as soon as the back of her legs came in contact with the scorching sand, she howled in surprise and pain. "Ouch!" she exclaimed, scrambling to her feet and, once again, aggressively rubbing at her eyes. As she did, the sand which had clung to her hands scratched against her eyelids and she couldn't help but cry out again. "Mommy!" she sobbed, choking on saliva. When she managed to open her eyes again, she peered down the dune with a foggy gaze and spotted an older woman walking. The woman had blonde hair, just like her mother! Eagerly, Unica made her way down the shadow side of the dune.
"Mommy!" she called out again as she approached the woman. However, upon closer inspection, it became apparent that the stranger was not Unica's mother, but some adolescent girl. "M..." Unica groaned as she skidded to a stop, her bottom lip quivering slightly. Her eyes suddenly flicked to the strange feline-looking creature by the woman's feet. It had a large golden ring around its next and was unlike any animal Unica had ever seen back home. And yet, a weak smile crept over her face as she cooed a gentle, "Kitty!" Whatever reason the woman had for venturing out into the desert was halted by the sudden appearance of the seven-year-old.

Tracking on a desert wasn't something Kyo enjoyed particularly. The mere possibility of sand getting into her nose was enough to deter her from using the full extent of it, but still, she was determined to go and find whatever had called her here. She felt its presence looming silently, claiming for her presence, yet. And she wouldn't rest until she got to it.
Luckily, Yuu had enough supplies for a relatively long trek on her backpack. Four canteens full of water and clothes apt for traversing this unforgiving terrain. They could probably go on an about for two or maybe more hours, even if she was confident that Kyo's nose would lead them to whatever she was searching way sooner.
Well, if nothing interrupted their plans, that was. Soon enough, a small figure entered her sight. Was that... ["What in tarnation...? Kyo, is that a hu-"]
Of course it was a human, the small mane of golden hair becoming apparent soon enough. What surprised her even more was the fact that she was running towards them and calling her... mommy? She didn't know why, but the blonde cringed a bit at the mention of the word.
She was just sixteen and had plenty of stuff to do before even thinking of having children. Those would have to wait a rather good while.
Seemingly, that had been an honest mistake of what looked like a lost girl that apparently... didn't know anything about where she was, and that thought that Kyo was a cat of sorts. The teenager crouched down, facing the girl with a smile in an attempt to calm her down, in case that was needed. The Plotmon, on her side, would be the one speaking. Not that she had any choice in the matter.
"Uh... hello! My name's Kyo and she's Yuu." She said with genuine friendliness, hoping she wouldn't be scared of an animal that suddenly decided to talk. "Are you lost? What's your name?"

When the teenager crouched in front of the little girl, Unica shied away, grabbing at the bottom edge of her shirt and kneading it gently in an anxious manner. The two exchanged looks and Unica's lip continued quivering, though she never broke into tears. Her eyes widened slightly as she suddenly heard a female voice. The strange thing was, the woman in front of her was not the one speaking. Unica cocked her head curiously as the voice said hello. Once realizing that it was not the teenager who was speaking, Unica's eyebrows creased together again and she glanced toward the strange looking feline.
Its mouth was moving and words were coming out!
It introduced itself as Kyo and introduced the mute woman as Yuu. "Umm..." Unica replied hesitantly, her blue eyes shifting from one to the other, obviously trying to understand what was happening. She almost turned to Yuu and said, "Your kitty's talking," but a brief flicker of reluctance passed through her mind and she remained silent as Kyo continued speaking, asking if Unica was lost before asking for her name. Unica continued nervously playing with the fringe of her shirt, her eyes locked on the Digimon, as she blurted out the first thing she could think to say: "I'm not 'pposed to talk to strangers." However, her statement was followed by a flood of tears streaming down her face and choked sobs escaping from her throat. "Where's my mommy?" she asked, staring up at Yuu as if she was the one with all the answers.

Her questions had gone unanswered, that being something more or less expected. Kyo let out a soft sigh before refocusing her gaze on the small girl. Yuu, on her stead, just nodded, as if telling her things were okay.
"See... Yuu has a small problem and can't really talk, so you'll have to make do with me, but don't worry! I'm plenty friendly!" She said with an eager smile. How would she tackle this? "I know that good kids can't really talk with strangers, but I promise we'll do what we can to help you out. Do you think you can trust in us?"
As is to emphasize the point, the blonde took her hat off, and really slowly began to try to fix it on top of the child's head. While not as hot as normal days, the heat was pretty much blistering. This would help her out a bit, and could even prevent the sunburns she'd undeniably get from getting too nasty.
Well, if she accepted it, that is. After that attempt, Kyo'd resume her small speech. "We can help you find your mommy if you want! If can give us a hint or something, we'll get there super quickly! You can even ride on my back if you feel too tired to walk."
It was a genuine offer, and while the small digimon wasn't that smooth at it, she was genuine. This was her first time talking to kid this small, so she wasn't that sure on how to proceed.

As the words, "Yuu has a small problem and can't really talk," entered Unica's ears, her bottom lip puckered outward so comedically that one may have thought she was playing around and wasn't truly upset. However, her swollen and red eyes proved that she wasn't faking it. Realizing that these words didn't stop Unica from being upset, Kyo quickly began to ensure that there was no reason to worry and that she was friendly enough to make it all worthwhile. This calmed Unica's nerves and her hysterical sobs quieted to gentle whimpers and sniffles. When the small feline creature asked if the young blonde could trust them enough for them to help her, she offer a weak nod, still clearly unsure if she was allowed to trust strangers.
Yuu took off her hat then and place it gingerly upon Unica's head, as if rewarding the small girl for her compliance. This act of kindness caused Unica's blue eyes to grow wide in surprise, followed immediately by a large smile creeping across her face. She did not understand the reason for the gift, but the idea of receiving a gift nevertheless made her happy. With a playful giggle, she reached up and adjusted the hat so that it sat on her head better. A negativity still lingered in the air, but things were looking up now that she was smiling and was willing to accept the help of strangers.
When the Digimon spoke again, Unica's looked down at her with a smile still lingering on her lips. Upon hearing the cat's offer of being ridden on, Unica couldn't help but let out another chuckle. "That's silly!" she exclaimed, "You can't ride on kitties!" The idea of riding Kyo like a horse or some other large mount came off as genuinely funny to the young girl, though she didn't linger on that topic for long. After a moment of brief consideration, Unica reached up and grabbed a strand of her hair. She stroked the strand as she said, "Mommy has hair like mine." She let go of her hair, but kept her eyes locked on the talking creature. "We were going to school," she explained, not entirely sure what sort of details Yuu and Kyo needed to best help her.

There! Now they were cookin'. Despite the young girl's initial reluctance to their help, Yuu seemingly had managed to pull the trick with something as simple as offering a hat. Guess that they now were on the road to help her, even if that wasn't... why they had come to this place. Oh well, not like they minded.
The Plotmon X and the human briefly exchanged gazes, and that was enough to determine what they'd do. First step, they'd try to not to make her feel as comfortable as possible in this alien world.
"You'd be surprised! Believe it or not, I can turn into a giant dog and let people ride me as if I were a horse! Cool, isn't it? So you don't have to fear. As long as we're around, we won't let anything bad happen to you. We'll make sure to get you to your mommy safe and sound."
Second, they had to find out where this girl was from, or at least have a vague idea. Given that the time in the Digital World slowed down to a crawl, people probably wouldn't have noticed she was missing, so using that was out of question. For a moment, Kyo adopted a pensive posture nodding to her descriptions and saying. "Do you remember your school's name? Or the name of the city where you live? Those would help us a lot!"
Even a country would be a good indication, but she didn't want to overload the small girl with inquiries. It was plain obvious that that wouldn't end well.

Unica stared at the feline creature with wide eyes, clinging on to every word she spoke. How could a cat turn into a giant dog, big enough for people to ride on like a horse!? That seemed to defy all common sense! Then again, before now, she had believed animals couldn't speak either. But that's why she was going to school - to learn those things. After all, her mother used to always say that she would learn all kinds of new things and would meet friends at school. Was this strange place school? The idea seemed plausible until Kyo asked what her school's name was. Certainly if she was already at school then they would know what the school was called. This thought upset Unica, but she kept herself from crying by remembering what Kyo had said only a few minutes prior, that they would protect her and would make sure she got back to her mommy safe and sound. Even if she didn't know where she was or where she was going, these two would look out for her. They promised, and people couldn't go back on promises. It was a universal law.
After hearing Kyo's questions, Unica pouted with a quiet, "No..." She knew that she should have remembered her school's name, her home address, or something about where she had come from, but nothing came to her. However, an idea struck her then. The train station was so busy and hectic and her mother feared that they would get separated in the chaos, so she had written her cell phone number on a little piece of paper and had stuck it in the front pocket of Unica's backpack. Remembering this, Unica let out a small gasp of excited. "My mommy gave me something!" She didn't elaborate as she pulled off her backpack and squatted down in order to rummage through the bag. She undid the front zipper awkwardly and pulled out the paper. "Look! It's her phone!" Unica exclaimed eagerly while holding the paper out the Kyo, not realizing that the Digimon didn't have any fingers to grab hold of the scrap. Upon closer inspection of the paper, one would notice the number scrawled in red pen had a Shibuya area code.

At first, the duo silently cursed their tough luck. This just couldn't be, right? There had to be something they could use to at least tell where this girl came from.
And apparently, there was! Soon enough, she brought out a piece of paper; her mother's phone! "Oooh! Let me read!" As if speaking for Yuu, the blonde squatted to the piece's level in order to see if she could discern the number, and it was... Shibuya's area code. Well, that had been pretty lucky! ["It's actually Shibuya. Guess we can just get there and call the phone. Shouldn't be that hard."]
Kyo nodded, before speaking out. "Yuu says we can get there pretty soon! In this place, telephones and that stuff don't work, so we'll have to go to a place where they do." Her words were true; most common electronic devices became infested with static as soon as one tried to operate them in the Digital World, so... they'd have to get back in order to contact her mother. "So... are you up for a little trip? It'll take us some time, but we can definitely get you to your mommy."
Taking the cue, Yuu brought out her D-Arc, the device beginning to glow with a faint, purple glow just at the same time as Kyo's body. The evolution process was quick; her otherwise small body began to expand and take a sharper form. In the end, it adopted a giant dog's form before the light dispersed, revealing BlackGaogamon's form.
"Everyone aboard!" The black digimon crouched down, and Yuu gestured to her new acquaintance to take her hand in order to ease her on Kyo's back. Hopefully she wouldn't be too afraid and this would result in a quick trip.

By this point in time, Unica was confused and fascinated with this place and its inhabitants. For one, Kyo was unlike any animal she had ever met, Yuu made funny hand motions, and apparently telephones didn't work here. Even if Unica did have a cellphone, apparently she couldn't use it to call her parents. How strange. Although the young girl was still full of questions that she wanted answered, she didn't even know how to begin asking them. Where was "this place?" Why didn't phones work? Why did animals openly speak here but not where she was from? Why didn't Yuu speak? The more she thought about it, the more her head ached. Instead of dwelling on questions that she wasn't prepared to ask aloud, she decided to focus on the here and now - what she could currently see and hear.
When Kyo asked if Unica was ready for a trip, she put the paper back in her bag, zipped the front pocket, and nodded in agreement. She didn't really want to walk in the desert heat anymore, but what other option did she have? Kyo had mentioned turning into a big dog, but that was just ridiculous... wasn't it? As the young girl struggled to put her backpack over her shoulders again, she watched as Yuu held out a strange looking device. It resembled a phone or some sort of child's toy, but Unica knew it wasn't. And yet, it looked somehow familiar. Regardless, it began glowing simultaneously with Kyo. Both the device and the feline creature shone so brilliantly that Unica feared what was happening. Kyo's small silhouetted form shifted and morphed into something much larger and Unica subconsciously stepped behind Yuu for protection. When the light finally dispersed, a grand wolf-like beast stood in Kyo's place.
As Unica slowly realized what had happened, her eyes began to sparkle in excitement and pure bliss. Her hands balled into tiny fists which lingered an inch in front of her chest as she stepped out from behind Yuu, still a bit cautious about what she had just witnessed, but also being driven by her giddy emotions and curiosity. Kyo was right! She could turn into a big dog! After taking a few steps toward the Digimon, Unica brought her fists up to her cheeks, stepped in place a few times, and let out a high pitched squeal. "Doggy!!" she exclaimed, whipping her arms out to the sides and hugging Kyo around the neck awkwardly. She buried her face in the silky fur and moaned quietly.
Once she felt content with the hug, Unica let go of Kyo and turned to look at Yuu who appeared to be waiting. She allowed the older woman to help her on top of the black canine and bounced in place eagerly as she waited for Yuu to get on as well. Once both were seated on the Digimon, Unica grabbed a clump of Kyo's fur with her left hand, pointed ahead with her right hand, and tapped her ankles against Kyo's sides as roughly as she could - which wasn't very hard at all. "Giddyup!" she exclaimed with a giggle.

The reaction they hadn't gotten wasn't one of fear, or even of surprise. Little girl was just giddy at Kyo's transformation, as strange and intimidating it could've been for others. Well, at least that was good! The Gaogamon reciprocated the hug she was getting by rubbing her head against her new friend. She could get used to being around this girl, totally.
Once they were done, and after both blondes were on top of her, she'd slowly rise up. "Hold fast! This might get a little bumpy." Just for safety, Yuu was seated right behind the girl, just in case they bumped or if she couldn't take Kyo's speed.
"Now..." Kyo's body began to turn right towards the general direction of Terminus City, her legs flexing in anticipation. "Let's go!"
She bolted, and she was fast. Not fast enough for Yuu to have any trouble at holding from the digimon's fur, but that may or may not apply to her other passenger too. At this pace, it'd probably take them from fifteen minutes to half an hour to reach the city. Once there, they'd just have to take the train back to Shibuya and then just make a call. With any luck, everything would be solved then.
Still, there was something that gnawed at Yuu's mind. A small girl appearing in this place couldn't be mere coincidence, right? There had to be some reason, not to say that most children who ended up entering the digital world received a digivice of some sort. Or maybe she had been overthinking stuff and this had been an honest mistake. She really had no way to know except for expecting for time to tell.

Unica was excited to finally go home. She was excited to see her mommy again. She was excited to get to ride on a horse that was a dog that used to be a cat, however strange that was. She could remember hearing that riding on a horse was a lot of fun, almost like flying. She always wondered what flying felt like and now she had the chance to experience it first-hand. However, as Kyo began to run and pick up the pace, Unica felt the breeze on her face get more intense and she began to panic. They were moving so fast that she figured she would fall off. She had been on a bullet train before and had felt the pressure of the machine accelerating, but it was nothing like this. The train was easier to handle. She had a comfy seat to sit in and she could watch the scenery go by via the window without having to deal with the incredible amount of wind. This was closer to one of those scary roller coasters she had seen at amusement parks that caused people to scream and get nauseous.
Reflectively, Unica clenched her hands into tight fists as she held onto Kyo's mane tightly. Without realizing, she had leaned backwards so much that her pack was pressed hard against Yuu’s body. Unica let out a tiny gasp as her breath was ripped from her and she felt her eyes dry out a little. The whole ordeal was very uncomfortable, but she told herself that it was worth it in order to get home to her mommy. But after only a minute, Unica grunted in displeasure and let go of Kyo’s fur in order to place her palms over her face to protect herself from the wind. If Yuu hadn’t been behind her, she certainly would have tumbled from the running Digimon. She wanted to get off, and she muttered as much into her hands, but who knew if Kyo or Yuu could actually hear her.

Maybe Kyo had... been a little too rough with her pace, as evidenced by the blonde's comments. She was used to going fast because Yuu didn't mind it, but the small child? Well, it seemed like she was getting super uncomfortable, that making her progressively deaccelerate. "Whoops, I think I... got carried away. Sorry!" Her apology was genuine, and she sounded really saddened she was having a good time. Right now, her pace was more or less bearable, even if way slower.
Meanwhile, Yuu just patted the girl's head over the hat, in an attempt to calm her down a bit. This had been an oversight on her part, and she could've probably done something to stop it. It was that the girl just seemed so thrilled at the prospect of Kyo running wild that... welp. No point in crying over broken glass.
"We can walk for a bit if you're feeling like it. I'm sorry if you got scared." At this point, she was downright remorseful about the experience. Guess this would be a lesson for the next time she'd have to deal with a small girl and high speeds.
"Say, there's anything I can do to make you feel a little better?" She offered right away. The Gaogamon knew for sure she didn't want to lose her newest friend's trust, and this probably could contribute a bit towards it.

Things seemed to get better when Kyo slowed in response to Unica's unpleasant reaction to going so fast. She had wanted to go fast and she had wanted to feel the thrill of riding on such a large and magestic beast, but her expectations were much different than reality. She wasn't upset, she merely seemed a bit shaken. As she lowered her hands away from her face, her blue eyes were wide and her cheeks were red. Slowly, she grabbed Kyo's mane with shaky hands and huffed a little as she shifted her weight. She was still recovering from the thrill and her tense muscle revealed how anxious she was. Although a bit unnerved by her recent experience, she didn't complain and she no longer asked to get off. Instead, she nodded and responded with an, "Okay," when Kyo suggested they walk for a bit, rather than run.
They walked for a while and Unica seemed to relax the longer they trotted along at a steady pace. However, as the silence grew between the three of them, Kyo spoke up, asking if there was anything she could do to make Unica feel better. "Umm..." the little girl began, looking around the deserted wasteland, as if doing so would help her come up with a reasonable response. With her right hand still grabbing hold of Kyo's mane, she rose her left hand to her mouth and began rubbing her index finger along her bottom lip in thought. Upon doing so, she let out a tiny gasp. "I'm thirsty," she announced, grabbing Kyo's fur again. Her tone made it sound like she didn't actually need anything to drink, but rather she was coming up with an answer to Kyo's question and that seemed like an honest enough answer. After all, she could use something refreshing in the heat. "I have water!" she exclaimed suddenly, glancing over her shoulder and at the backpack over her shoulders. "Are you thirsty, doggy?" she asked, turning her attention back to Kyo.

Well, at least it hadn't been that bad; the blonde girl's answer had prompted a sigh of relief from Kyo. In a sense, it was amazing how such a young human could take on so many foreign situations and still come out resolved to continue with this small journey.
The Gaogamon hadn't even needed the response to slow down, and while her walking pace was still relatively fast compared to most other common animals, it wasn't anything near the breakneck speed she had reached seconds before. A small smile graced the canine's face as she felt the girl's body relaxing on top of her, finally managing to lift some of the guilt she felt at the moment.
Her eventual request and question weren't all that surprising, and she figured they'd be thirsty after such a trip. "Guess we can stop for a second, then. I'm kinda thirty too, and I think I'm looking at just the place." As Folder Desert began to make way to Network plains and the climate began to turn cooler and less forgiving, the digimon spotted a shadow under an ancient tree. As good as it got, honestly.
Her pace ground to a sudden halt when she got right under the shade, crouching down in order to ease down the humans' descent. This time, Yuu was the first to slide down and would wait below to make sure the girl didn't get injured while doing so. Once that was done, the blonde would look at her backpack, searching for one of the many canteens she had filled in before, handing one to the digimon that was currently resting. "We should be almost there. Five or so minutes of traveling before getting to the city, and probably five more minutes until we get to the train station. Take you're excited for going back?"
