Why Is It Always The Tundra (Mitsuko)

"Fine." Patamon agreed, with a slight whine to his voice. "But if anything tries to eat me, I'm gonna bite it first." Yup. That was always a solid plan. If it intends to eat you, bite it first. Well... at least it made sense to him. "Does that mean... I get to digivolve again! I love digivolving!" Patamon said excitedly, as he slightly bounced up and down on Isaac's head.
Upon hearing about Isaac's beast form, Patamon whistled. "Three minutes. I doubt I could even cover that kind of ground as Angemon!" Although, the digimon did entertain the idea of holding a race against Isaac... someday. "Yeah, this cold is freezing my Data off. Can we get those two over here so we can go already!" Patamon whined playfully, as he nudged Isaac's head with a furry paw and a small giggle. Patamon had to admit. He liked Isaac. When he wasn't staring daggers at him anyway.
Mitsuko was startled by the sudden embrace, she froze completely, before she buried her face into his shoulder, where her tears slowed, and finally ceased. Slowly she pulled away, and smiled at the younger boy. "No... I'll be okay. Just ... lets be careful okay?" She added with a grin. Slowly his words sunk into her head... Alicia... and Maia... They knew them. Wait... Maia dated ISAAC!!! Mitsuko's face went from serene to completely mortified within point two seconds. "He is... and she is... and they are..." Mitsuko sputtered, her thought train moving at exceptional speeds. "Oh god, they'll NEVER let me live this down if they find out!" Mitsuko moaned as she clutched her head and fell on her butt, putting her head between her knees. A wave of silver hair cascading between herself and the rest of the world.
What a cruel and unusual punishment the Digital World seemed to be dishing out to her today.

"Good plan. That's how I always got through life, and it's worked out well for me so far," Isaac said, grinning wickedly. " 'Course, it can get tiring sometimes, but it means Elliot's got less on his plate. Might as well bite back so he doesn't have to, eh?" That certainly explained Isaac's protective reaction earlier! But hey, no dim memories, right?
If everything went according to plan, this ride certainly wouldn't be a dim memory. "Practice makes perfect," Isaac advised. "Although it helps being super aerodynamic, of course. Like this!" Isaac hit the button, being swallowed up in a cocoon of dark flame. It didn't take too long for Devidramon to burst out of the cocoon, stretching his wings out far and arcing gracefully. "God, I love this form," he muttered, grinning widely. "We'll take off any second now. Figure we should give your human a bit of time, first."
Elliot let out a small surprised noise as Mitsuko buried her face in his shoulder, blushing quite brightly. This was probably the closest contact that he had been in with anyone, and unsure what to do he gave her a few nervous pats on the back. "I'll be okay. I promise," Elliot said. "And . . . and I'm gonna make sure nothing happens to you, okay?" He smiled shyly in return, but his smile quickly gave way to confusion as mortification spread across her face. "Wait, what's wrong?" he asked, heavily confused. "I mean, yeah, they're dating. And they can be annoyingly cute together. Why?" Even with how embarrassing today was, Elliot had no idea what Mitsuko was embarrassed over this time.
Not that there was time to debate. Isaac slid up to the group, lowering down to the ground for easier boarding. "Alright, guys! Elliot's got the map, and I've got the horsepower. Next stop . . . wherever we're going," he declared, wings beating somewhat impatiently.
Elliot nodded at him before turning back to Mitsuko, hand extended. "Isaac can get really fast sometimes, so make sure to hold on tight, okay?" he advised. "Still, he'll slow down if you ask, even if he gets a kick out of being a speed demon sometimes."

"Yup!" Patamon agreed. "Sometimes you gotta bite off more than you can chew, to protect the ones you love." When Isaac started to transform, Patamon leapt up, and hovered around the Devidramon. "Wow... now that's what I call flying in style! Suki-chan! Come check this out!"
Mitsuko could hear the comforting words from Elliot. "It's... nothing." She mumbled as she grabbed Elliot's hand and stood up, gracefully flipping her hair behind her shoulders. "Hey, If I can ride on Alicia's back, I'm pretty sure I can handle anything Isaac will throw at me." She added with a smirk on her face. "Let's go!" Mitsuko cheered as she pumped a fist into the air, her mood brightening up rapidly.
Patamon flew towards his partner, landing on her head as she took off running towards Isaac. "Aye Sir!" She couldn't wait to join this adventure. Yes, there would be danger. But she wasn't alone. She had her new friends, and her partner always had her back. Like she had his.

If Isaac was privvy to the same conversation that Elliot was, maybe he would've known just how strongly Patamon held himself to that statement. As is, it just came off like a kid with a big ego and a lot of guts planning his next move. "That's the spirit," Isaac said nonetheless. "Just make sure you don't bite off too much more. A mouthful's one thing. Choking's a whole different story," he added, wondering where the heck this food metaphor started to develop.
At least boarding the S.S. Isaac seemed to boost Mitsuko's spirits. Maybe cruising through the sky was all it took to help her get past her earlier worries. Isaac used his tail to help guide Mitsuko and Elliot on. "Please disable all electronics before the flight, and be careful not to kick or nudge the passenger in front of you," Isaac joked. "Emergency exits are basically everywhere, if you've got the guts to jump. Not that you'll need to. Nothing's blasted me out of the sky yet." Once his "passengers" were fully boarded, Isaac made his initial push off of the ground. His wings beat in a controlled, gentle fashion as he hovered off of the ground.
"That way!" Elliot said, pointing to the northwest. Sure enough, they were going deeper into the tundra. Why was it always the tundra?
"Alright. Hold on to your butts!" Isaac shouted, rearing back slightly before dashing off. The tundra became a blue-and-white blur at the speeds Isaac was traveling, snakelike body stretched straight and wings folded in a shape like a cruise missile. A single beat was enough to give him a good amount of propulsion; such efficient flying was a far cry from the trainwreck that was Isaac's first time in the air.
"What do you think?" Elliot asked, trying to take a glance at the landscape beneath. "Pretty cool, huh? I'm honestly kinda shocked Isaac hasn't challenged Alicia to a race yet."
"And scare everyone below us? Ha, as if," Isaac said. "But if she's up for losing, she knows where to find me." Not even Alicia was spared from the sibling teasing that the bros had been awfully specialized in lately.
As per Isaac's predictions, the flight didn't last long. With a chirp of "There!" Elliot signaled for his brother to stop. The dragon flung out his wings and gently slowed to a halt, looking around and realizing something very crucial.
"There's nothing here!"
The Digivice was beeping frantically, and its positioning dot was right over the group's current location, yet there wasn't a single structure in sight. Elliot looked over the side, trying to see just what was going on, but there was nothing but long sheets of ice. "Maybe it's broken?" he asked, a bit of disappointment in his voice.
"No, no, there's gotta be . . . aha!" Isaac snapped his fingers in triumph as he realized what was below them. Almost impossible to see against the ice was a fissure, just wide enough for the Devidramon and his passengers to squeeze through. "This is gonna be a tight fit, but I think I can make it if a tuck my wings in. Bad news is that means we're gonna be going into freefall. Don't worry, though. I got you guys. I promise."
With that said, Isaac lifted his large wings over Elliot and Mitsuko. Barring a bit of sun coming in from the gap between his wings, the two would be immersed in the shade. Taking in a deep breath, Isaac angled himself towards the fissure and prepared for one hell of a fall.

Mitsuko could feel the excitement building in her body. Alicia had taken her for a motorbike ride, and that was amazing. But to fly... that was even BETTER! Mitsuko loved the rush of the wind, and the freedom that came with it. She grabbed Patamon, and nestled him safely between herself and Elliot. Then came the moment she waited for. A brief moment of weightlessness, then ZOOM!
They were off. If she was cold before, it was nothing like now! The biting wind whipped around her rapidly. Her hair billowing behind her, as she tried to shove her face deeper into her scarf. Mitsuko could barely keep her bearings, as everything seemed to flash by so quickly. "This is amazing!" Mitsuko shouted, trying to make sure her voice was heard over the roaring winds. "I would love to see them race. I know who I'm betting on!" She said with a small giggle.
As quickly as it had started, it all stopped. They hadn't been flying long, but the speed caused them to cover a great distance. Mitsuko looked at her D-3. Yeah, they were there. And there was nothing here. "I don't think it's broken." Mitsuko whispered, as she showed Elliot her D-3.
Before Mitsuko could even comprehend the term Freefall, the sky was blocked out by black wings, and down they plummeted. Mitsuko couldn't help it as a shrill scream erupted from her throat! "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!" She chanted as she felt them gathering speed. Another scream ripped from her throat, as they continued to fall.

Elliot laughed a little, smiling at Mitsuko's compliments. "I bet Isaac really appreciates it," he said, figuring Isaac was way too busy going fast to speak for himself. "I wouldn't count Alicia out, though. She's really smart, and always tries her best. It'd be the toughest competition Isaac's had in a while!" Elliot would be lying if he said he wasn't looking forward to Isaac and Alicia racing, though. It would've been a real spectacle, and no matter who was winning he'd be able to cheer his little heart out for them with a clear conscience.
While it seemed Mitsuko really liked flying, falling was another thing entirely. She screamed. Really loudly. And really shrilly. Elliot was left cringing, part from the screaming and part from feeling like his stomach was going to fly right out of his body. "It's okay, he's done this before," Elliot tried to say, but from how shaky his voice was it was clear he didn't have much confidence in this venture. Needless to say, he was clinging tightly to anything he could get a good grip on, as if afraid any second now he'd slide clean off of Isaac's back.
"Come on, guys, just bear with me," Isaac said, trying to keep his voice reassuring. "Once I'm low enough I'll throw out my wings and bring us to a stop. We're almost there . . . almost . . . " His red eyespots tried to scan the chasm, but all he could see was the darkness of close walls. This wasn't good. What if there wouldn't be enough clearance for him to slow before the ground came to view?
"Steady . . ." Elliot trembled a little.
"Steady . . ." Isaac's tail flicked back and forth nervously, making a slight drumming sound on his wing membranes.
"Steady!" Elliot opened his mouth, as if to join the screaming too. "Okay, now! Grab on tight, 'cause my wings won't be sheltering you anymore!"
With that, Isaac thrust out his wings. Elliot made sure to cling tight to his snakelike body as darkness gave way to light. Surely enough, they weren't, just in some dingy chasm anymore. In fact, where they ended up looked downright beautiful. Sunlight that trickled in from above hit a series of large, cracked panes of ice. It refracted in an almost rainbowlike fashion, immediately hushing any of Elliot's worries. He leaned over Isaac's side to get a better look, noting that the whole dome-like area they emerged in seemed to have the same glassy structure. It all culminated in a floor of thick, icy rock, a few frozen stalagmites making him feel quite lucky that Isaac nailed the stop.
"Amazing . . ." Elliot said, voice echoing off of the walls of the dome. For a fissure so small, it sure lead to an expansive looking cave! Occasionally some snow from above dropped down the fissure, but there was far from enough to pile up. The occasional white specks settling on Isaac's back were really the only sign of snow. However, the little snow there was seemed to shimmer in the air, the reflective light of this cavern making it look quite beautiful on the way down. He took a few cloudy breaths as he looked around, noticing tunnels stretching out to their left and their right. Elliot's Digivice was indicating the right tunnel, whereas Mitsuko's would point towards the left.
"What's yours saying?" Elliot asked, showing Mitsuko his Digivice. It was really refreshing having the signal not get screwed up for a change.

Mitsuko clamped both hands over her mouth, and nodded at Elliot. She didn't trust her voice to betray her. Then again, it didn't seem he had much confidence either. But taking it all on a leap of faith was part of why the two seemed to make a good team. When Isaac called back to them, she tried to roll the tension out of herself. She was prepared for Isaac's instructions, but once she clamped her hands back down to steady herself, she was screaming once again.
WHOOSH! The air flew around them wildly, Mitsuko was secured tightly, however... "Patamon!" She yelled, as he lost his grip and flew off of Isaac. "It's okay. I can fly!" He called back as they landed. She kept her eyes on her partner until he was safely back on her head. "That was a close one." he teased, earning himself a poke in the ribs. Mitsuko looked around the chasm. It was magnificent! Colors and light of all sorts filled her vision, she was slightly surprised at how beautiful it all was. "Wow!" Patamon called out, his voice echoing down the halls.
"Wow is right!" Mitsuko said softly, as she took a few tentative steps looking at the ceiling. "This is... amazing. I never knew..." Mitsuko put a hand against an ice pillar, and shivered from the cold. "Something this beautiful could exist down here." Mitsuko dug out her D-3 and looked at the screen. "Mine is saying I need to go to the left." Mitsuko looked over at Elliot's and saw his was to the right. "Oh... crap." She said softly. "Do you want to... split up... or... Perhaps get yours and come back for mine later?" Mitsuko was really hoping for the second one. And if they couldn't come back today, she could understand. She just didn't think splitting up was a good plan at the moment.

"I know, right?" Elliot asked, eyes bright and smile wide. "Usually, the tundra's so . . . I mean, usually when I'm there all I see is . . ." Elliot blinked, trying to think of a way to put this that wouldn't terrify Mitsuko. Would he talk about the time he got horrible shadow burns across his body while Shi fought a desperate survival against a Digimon beyond Mega? Or maybe the time they were trapped in a cave-in. Or maybe the time they were brought up to a shady mausoleum to help a far older, more experienced Spirit User make a deal with the shadiest spirit they've seen yet? Or the time Elliot almost got embarrassed to death by some very close contact with Mitsuko.
Okay, that one was today! But still.
Needless to say, Elliot didn't have a ton of fond memories of the tundra. "Kinda deadly," he finally admitted, hoping that wouldn't be too terrifying of a way to describe it. "But hey, I'm sure this isn't going to be like that at all! Heck, if you don't touch the walls, it's actually kinda nice down here. Right?" It was still chilly, but compared to the absolute freezing of the tundra's surface chilly was like a nice brisk breeze in comparison.
That said, better than normal didn't mean this was going to be a walk in the park. Elliot blinked as he looked between Mitsuko's Digivice and his. Were they seriously getting split up? That sounded like an awful idea! At the same time, making Mitsuko delay didn't sound like a great idea either. Especially when she was already deciding she'd go last. That wasn't fair to her at all. "Huh? Wait, no!" Elliot said, immediately fumbling to pocket his Digivice. "We can look for yours first. It's only fair, right? I mean, you're the one who offered to come with us in the first place. So that means you get helped first."
Isaac couldn't help but snicker at his brother's hasty attempts at going to the back of the line. "Such a gentleman," he teased, sloping his body a bit to the side so that he could bank left. "Still, I'd say Patamon's been patient enough. I'm sure our spirits wouldn't mind us taking a quick detour. Let me know if your dot ever starts changing direction, okay? These things can be real pains in the butt to track sometimes." With that said Isaac darted into the leftmost cavern, eyespots narrowed as he looked to see what would come up next.
"So, figure we've got plenty of time to get to know each other," Isaac started, looking back slightly towards Mitsuko and Patamon. "How long have you guys been around here for?" If this came down to a battle, Isaac would like to know what kind of experience his new teammates had.

The deadly comment really didn't help Mitsuko's nerves. "Yeah... Nice." Mitsuko said softly, her mind running in rapid circles, as her eyes trailed the icy cavern. "Yeah... nice if you want to be a snow cone." Patamon jeered as he gave a wink towards Isaac. For once, Patamon was grateful for his fur. It really came in handy down here.
"Are you sure... I mean, you guys were on a hunt first..." Mitsuko tried to protest but was cut off by Isaac. "Well... okay. If you're sure..." The silverette said softly, as she ran a hand through her hair, before taking off after Isaac and Elliot. "Well..." Mitsuko shifted nervously. "We've only been here a few months. We've been in a few close calls... but somehow we pull through." Patamon nodded in agreement before adding "Yeah! I mean, as Angemon I can fight and heal, so that has to help somehow. Right?" Mitsuko nodded her head. "Yeah. Just don't... over do it." She muttered as her steps slowed down a bit, to check the progress. It seemed that they were on a direct course, which she relayed to the two boys.
"How about you guys? How long have you been... doing this... stuff." Mitsuko stammered, her nervousness coming back. Was she going to be too weak to help? Would they not like her because of her... newness? Would they decide it was too much of a risk and just decide to give up? No. She shouldn't think like that. They were nice enough, they wouldn't abandon her. Right?

A few months? Not bad! Especially since it seemed like Mitsuko had gotten plenty of experience in during those few months. "See? You guys have already seen a lot of the Digital World so quickly," Elliot said, a reassuring smile on his face. "If you guys keep it up like this, I bet you're going to get really strong in no time." After all, she saved the life of two people who had been here for twice as long as she had. Hell, maybe more than that, depending on how long Mitsuko meant by "a couple of months." That was just clear proof of how essential her help was.
"It's been about a year since we first came here," Isaac said in return. "And trust me, if you're looking for close calls me and my bro have had way too many of those. Even when you've been doing this for a while, there's always something or another that'll catch you off guard." Maybe if those incidents stopped happening in the tundra, Elliot wouldn't be half as apprehensive about this place.
"But you're going to find a lot of cool stuff along with the worrying stuff," Elliot promised, not wanting Isaac's realistic negativity to get to Mitsuko too badly. "Like, a lot of the people really important to us were met in the Digital World," Elliot added. "Or, like, not part of it at the time but related to it. So it isn't like it's been nothing but stress so far."
"Ah, you don't gotta worry," Isaac said, noting some of the worry in Mitsuko's voice. "I know you'll be able to hold your own around here. And even if you do have a bit of trouble, we've got you covered."
The first thing that Isaac noticed as he followed the course Mitsuko plotted was that he could see his own red eyespots staring right back at him. Then he looked to the left and saw the same. When he looked to the right, the same. Hell, even the ceiling and floor were showing his eyespots. Isaac reeled in shock at first, only to notice that these were simply icy mirrors. The mirrors made up every part of the corridor, seemingly turning this cave into a dead end. While Mitsuko's Digivice would still indicate that the path forward was somewhere in this area, there was no exit to the hall of mirrors currently stretching outwards.
"Hrm . . . you guys got any ideas?" he asked, restlessly flying back and forth before the mirrors.

"I guess... you're right." Mitsuko said softly, as she continued to follow the boys along the corridor. "I hope we can be helpful." Patamon just rolled his eyes "I have faith we will be. It's all a matter of positive thinking!" Mitsuko nodded, although to be honest Isaac's comment did bother her. However she couldn't dwell on it too long, as Elliot was there to build her confidence back up. Surprisingly so did Isaac! Perhaps they would be stronger in the future. But knowing that strong people had their back made Mitsuko feel much better.
However, her optimistic mood didn't last too long as they reached a dead end. "But... it says we go this way..." Mitsuko pointed towards the north western wall. There were three or four panels that seemed to be mirror-esque in appearance. Mitsuko looked back to her D-3 and and back up to the walls. She knew there had to be a passage here somewhere. As she looked around, looking for a lever or a switch, Patamon just lazily floated making faces at the walls.
"Hmm... there's no trigger... but there has to be a way through it..." Mitsuko wondered aloud to herself, as she ground her toes into the floor in frustration. Then an idea hit her, what did they do in all the movies? Mitsuko removed the glove from her right hand, and knocked on each one of the panels. Thunk. Thunk. Tink. Thunk. Mitsuko stepped back towards the third panel and knocked again. Tink. "This one... its hollow. Patamon?" She called up to her partner, as he soared down from the sky. "Way ahead of ya! BOOM BUBBLE!" Mitsuko's eyes widened in horror, as he sent a pressurized bullet of air at the false panel, and it bounced off, towards the ceiling. It kept ricocheting off of the walls! "Look out!" Mitsuko called as she tackled Elliot, right before the attack hit the spot he had been standing in. "Oh... I'm so..." Mitsuko blushed, as her chest was yet again burying Elliot "Ohmygod... ohmygod.... ohmygod!" Mitsuko said rapidly, her voice breaking several octaves, as she helped Elliot up. "Are you... okay?" Oh god... why me... twice in one day?! The silverette groaned internally. "Patamon... We need to use our heads, not just our strength!" She scolded, trying to diffuse the tension within herself.
"Hey. I cracked it." Patamon said, ignoring Mitsuko. Sure enough, there was a crack about a foot tall and six inches wide from where the attack had hit. "Aha!" Before Mitsuko could even ask or protest to Patamon's plan, the little guy was flying around the room as fast as he could, before slamming into the cracked panel head first! For a moment the room vibrated from the sheer force of the attack, but then a sharp crack filled the air, as the panel splintered into thousands of pieces, and Patamon went through the passageway. "Now that's what I call using your head." He grinned, as he turned back towards the others.
Mitsuko just nodded in silence, as she carefully skirted around Isaac, avoiding eye contact with him. "Yeah, this is the way." Mitsuko kept her eyes down at her D-3. "Let's go!"

"Patamon's right," Elliot said, smiling softly at Mitsuko. "And I mean, think about it. So far, every time I've seen someone Digivolve, it's because they really wanted to help. And you've been worrying about helping us since we've got here. I just know the second something bad happens, you're gonna power up and make any Digimon that messes with us regret it!" Slowly but surely, Elliot was starting to piece together how this place worked. That may have been mostly for Tamers, but even Spirit Users had to hold that desire close. When he and Isaac weren't feeling that spark, their transformations were way less effective.
Mitsuko, frankly, had more spark than either bro expected. She just needed to light it.
Isaac sighed in irritation as he looked through the ice cave. "These things aren't always perfect," he grumbled. "Ours usually get fuzzy when there's a lot of interference. Like when we got our first spirits out of the Dark Area." That memory deserved a shudder. "Maybe it's pointing the wrong way 'cause we're so far underground?" he suggested. Nevertheless, Mitsuko didn't seem as daunted as he did by the obstacle in their path.
Her knocking guided her to the right path. One mirror of ice was way less solid than the others. Whereas the others were solidly embedded in stone, this one may have been water cascading down from the ceiling and freezing over. Elliot perked up when he noticed that a way out was found, and Isaac grinned hungrily. "Nice thinking there," he said, flying in front of the panel to think about how he'd go about removing it. "Now, I could melt it, but the whole cave's frozen over. I wouldn't want to end up drowning us trying to get us out of here. Hmm . . . "
Isaac didn't have much time to ponder the question. Patamon immediately let out a Boom Bubble, which started ricocheting all across the cave. Elliot prepared to judge, but it seemed that his rather zealous helper had other ideas. In a few seconds Elliot was flat on his back on the ground, and everything went dark. Everything also went soft. By the time Mitsuko pried herself off of the boy he was bright red, half from blushing his brains out and half from oxygen deprivation. "Don't . . . don't worry," he stuttered out as Mitsuko helped him up. "I-I mean, you saved me, right? That could've really hurt. And you found the exit, too! So, thank you." It took a lot of stammering to get through that whole thing, but at he finished!
Patamon's second plan went way better than the first. The thin sheet of ice splintered all over the floor, cold ice rushing from where the hole was freshly opened. Isaac nodded with approval, having pretended to look the other way while Mitsuko was "saving" Elliot. "Nice one!" he said. "Although next time, warn us before you come up with a plan, eh?"
With that said, Isaac began leading the group into the next part of the tunnel. It was a long, wide path, the walls seeming to expand the close the group got to the end of the hall. It ended in a large, circular room, the center of which was filled by a large statue of a Korikakumon. It seemed to be protectively hunched over . . . something, axes held aloft.
Isaac, naturally, took the lead, motioning for the others to follow behind him. After all, who knew how many traps there would be up ahead? Once he moved a far enough distance up unharmed, he motioned for the others to follow. "All clear," he said, waving them on with his tail.
Elliot, still a bit pink as he recovered from his embarrassment earlier, nodded and headed up. The Korikakumon statue didn't seem to happy. Its eyes flashed a menacing red, and it promptly drew an axe back to fling at Elliot's face. He let out a squeak of surprise and hit the floor, eyes nervously tracking the axe as it embedded into a wall where his neck had been mere seconds ago.
"The hell!?" Isaac shouted the statue's head snapping towards him as he made his outburst. Another axe flew his way, Isaac flying over it and letting out a snarl of displeasure. "Seriously, what did he do-" Another axe, Isaac barrel rolling to the side of this one. He flew a few wingbeats back, dragging Elliot with him. As soon as they were out of range, the statue's eyes reset to a dull blue and its axe-throwing arms lowered.
What the heck set it off?

Mitsuko could only smile at Elliot's reasoning. "Well... I hope it doesn't come to that." She said softly, as she put her glove back on. "But... I'm not afraid to fight, if I have to." Patamon nodded in agreement before rolling his eyes at Isaac. "Hey, we're alive. No one is hurt. It was a good plan. But I can keep you in the loop on all my plans, if you'd like." He added with a wink. Mitsuko shuddered at the thoughts of what all his 'plans' were. Sometimes it was best to remain silent, than retort. Sometimes it was best not to know. Mitsuko just nodded mutely at Elliot's stammering comments. She couldn't trust her voice right now.
Her conviction was strong, as she followed the boys. Patamon resumed his place upon Mitsuko's head as they continued down the long corridor. Mitsuko stared in amazement at the Korikakumon statue. It was fierce, yet beautiful in an odd sort of way. The way it seem hunched over, there was something it was protecting or guarding. Curiousity clawed her mind, as she took another step forward. Tentively Mitsuko followed Isaac, as he searched for traps. She felt bad, as if he was being a Digi-humanoid shield. He shouldn't put himself at risk like that. Still, she said nothing and just did as she was told.
She watched Isaac motion them forward, and she prepared to follow until the Korikakumon statue suddenly turned from innocent to murderous! Before a scream could even well up into her throat, an axe was flying towards Elliot, but he ducked out of the way. Isaac's yell seemed to attract the attention of the statuesque monster, as it slung another couple of axes at the brothers. Patamon however was in full battle mode now! "Oh no you didn't!" He said sassily as he lept off of Mitsuko's head and glowed with a golden light.
Patamon digivolve to... Angemon!
A small chorus of bells sounded around them, as did digital feathers that disappeared upon contact. Before Angemon could even start an attack, an axe was hurled towards them! Angemon quickly pushed Mitsuko down, but a small part of his one wing was clipped with an axe. Luckily it was just loose feathers, but still. Damn! Angemon Picked Mitsuko up and flew her back a few yards before being joined by Elliot and Isaac, when the statue seemed to go back to a stasis-like state.
"What... what... what was that?!" She stammered, as she shook from head to toe. They all were nearly butchered! No. She needed to focus. She couldn't lose it right now. She can't help her friends if she is falling apart! Slowly, Mitsuko took a deep breath, and released it. Okay. Think. "Okay, let's use our heads..." Mitsuko said softly as she pulled a notebook and a pen out of her bag, and began to scribble down some ideas. The sound of Mitsuko muttering to herself, and the scratching of her pen against paper filled the cold air.
"It could be attacking humans." She mused, as she recalled the first attack. "Which explains why it attacked Isaac. Human-Digimon Hybrid." The silverette smiled, until Angemon cut in her thoughts. "But I'm not either." Angemon stated, as he looked down at his partner. "True. So it can't be that." Mitsuko grimaced, and crossed out her notes.
"What about sight?" She mused, as she wrote it down. "It attacked when it saw us approach." Mitsuko said softly, before scratching that one out too. "No... That can't be it. Isaac was leading the room, but Elliot was attacked first." Mitsuko chewed upon the end of her pen in irritation. "Which also rules out sound, because Elliot didn't say anything and was attacked first, even though Isaac yelled and got it's attention."
Mitsuko ran her hand through her hair, as she tried a more scientific method. "What about cold blooded vs. warm blooded. As Devidramon perhaps you have a lower body temperature, and wasn't attacked until you yelled at it." She said to Isaac. "Maybe you were harder to see?" Mitsuko mused again, before scratching it out once more. "No... that is reaching too far. We don't necessarily know that you're cold blooded. So that's not right either. If he can see your body temperature's he would have attacked way before he did. there has to be another trigger!"
The silverette closed her eyes in frustration, taking a few calming breaths. Think. Relax and think. Slowly Mitsuko recalled all the events in the order that they had happened. A few moments later, her eyes snapped open. "I've got it! It's a bit... far-fetched... but there is only one explanation!" Her smile was dazzling as she looked at her partner and the brothers. "He somehow senses strong emotional fluctuations! Elliot was embarrassed about our... little altercation." She added with a small blush. "It didn't attack you, Isaac, until you got angry that it had attacked your brother!" Mituko's smile widened as she turned to her partner. "And it attacked you, because you were too upset about it trying to hurt our friends. This is it! That is how it reacts to us! By our emotions! It was perfectly fine with Isaac, until he lost control of his emotions!"
Slowly her smile fell, she knew what the next step was, and she had to do it herself. "I've... got to do this. Alone." She raised her hand as Angemon opened his mouth to protest. "Elliot is still... traumatized from the attack. Isaac, you're too angry to focus on anything but revenge at this point." She turned to her partner once again "You're my best friend, Angemon. But you're too... well... hyper. You will try to exact justice, and cause it to re-awaken. I'm the only one who can keep their cool. If I'm wrong, you guys can save me, and torment me later." Before the boys could even protest, Mitsuko had closed her eyes, and took another calming breath. She cleared her mind of all disturbances, and hummed a relaxing melody under her breath as she slowly walked towards Korikakumon. She had to see what the statue was concealing from them. It was the only way forward.

Elliot blushed all the more brightly as Mitsuko brought up their . . . earlier encounters, while Isaac looked nonplussed at the suggestion that she made. "That's ridiculous-" he said, only to have an axe flung as his face the second he made his judgment. Apparently for Korikakumon's purposes, doubt counted as an emotion. He hit the floor, angrily plucking the axe out and flicking it to the ground. "Okay, okay, maybe you're onto something. But I'll be keeping a close eye in case this doesn't work. Like hell I'm letting you get skewered."
Mitsuko shut that argument down as soon as possible. None of the brothers were really in a good state to calm down and keep Mitsuko company, nor was Angemon. "Please, be safe," Elliot said to Mitsuko, voice small, as she headed out on her own.
Each step of the way, the Korikakumon statue's fingers clenched just a bit more tightly around its axes. Occasionally its arm twitched, pulsing as if in time with any doubts in Mitsuko's heart. When Mitsuko approached dangerously close it's eyes snapped open, prompting Isaac to hunker down in a combat stance. However, Elliot quickly pointed to the statue's face. Rather than the piercing red that it usually bore when going to attack, its eyes were simply glowing a dull blue.
Soon Mitsuko was underneath the shadow's statue, and as far as the brothers knew she was safe.
Sitting in front of Mitsuko would be a large trap door. It stood out starkly from the rest of the icy floor, made of a cold, blue steel and sealed shut by a large wheel. There didn't seem to be a lock or anything currently blocking the door; it would only take some good old fashioned brute force to yank it open. Mitsuko's Digivice would be beeping with renewed intensity as soon as she reached the door; it would be fairly obvious that this would be the next, and potentially last, step.
Behind the door, etched in icy rock, was what looked like a symbol etched into the ground. It currently pulsed with a gentle blue color, but any time some sort of emotion was displayed it would glow a burning red. An identical, yet much larger, symbol was carved in the Korikakumon's back, pulsing in unison with the smaller one. How curious.

Angemon watched with bated breath as Mitsuko tried her theory. His body was stiff, rigid to the point of being a statue. However, being as tense as he was, that just meant he could sprint into action equally as fast. When the silverette finally reached the statue, he exhaled. If it were possible, he would have had a heart attack. He was the one that was supposed to fight and protect her, now she was the one putting her life on the line?! This didn't sit well with Angemon. However they were partners, and usually partners were equals.
Time seemed to stand still for both partners. Mitsuko was busy looking at what she had found. The trap door was definitely not something she could handle herself, so she axed that thought as soon as she had it. Her blue eyes scanned the surrounding area again, when her digivice broke her thoughts. She jumped in surprise, and the statue turned, starting to reach an axe! Mitsuko recovered her composure, before it even had time to get an axe off its back.
"It's okay, I'm fine!" Mitsuko called back. Angemon had taken to the sky, ready to bolt in for her, when Mituko's voice calmed him down. Okay, so the door was their next pathway. But first she needed to disarm the guard. The sudden flash of blue, to red, then back to blue caught Mitsuko's gaze. The rune-like symbol had to be linked to the statue. Finally, she noticed the same one was on Korikakumon's back, and seemed to react in time with the one on the floor. Slowly Mitsuko wandered over to the one on the floor, and knelt before it. Her body shivered from the coolness of the floor. Mitsuko took her gloves off, placing them onto the ground beside her. She took one last deep breath, and prayed this would work. She closed her eyes, knelt her head down a wave of silvery hair hid her face from her partner and the brothers. Finally she placed both hands on the smaller rune, hoping for some reaction.
