Corrupted Wood (N-Rank) (5/5)

As Isaac gave his gravelly response, Valeria didn't move much from her, well, interesting expression towards him. "Oh, no worries, I never thought you were, but, um..." The bunny really had no means to continue the conversation, and thus awkwardly turned her attention towards the rest of the group.
That was 'something', indeed.
But soon enough, it was about time for the group to head out into the forest. Koneka gave a smile and a nod towards Cion as she took up the role of the group's spotter, though Koneka was more dubious of Isaac's suggestion about brute forcing the maze than John was! "Well, if you're solving a maze from above, sure. But there's no guarantee the outside wall is tied to the exit at all... and even then, isn't it a forest? It would be a pain to have to climb through every nook and cranny. Its better to just keep in mind which way is 'North' or 'East' or something like that."
Ami shrugged. "Mm, at least its an idea, Koneka. Though it does look like we're going to have to make some guesses as is... and we have to consider that any corner we turn might have that scary Digimon."
"... Koganemon?"
"Koganemon." Ami nodded, drawing her Digivice as Valeria hopped off her shoulder, taking to the head of the group. And as the Usagimon removed her gold pendant, a bright light flashed from the jewelry, the bunny vanishing as a larger form began to grow around that pendant. Skipping champion, Valeria took to her ultimate form: that of a ten-foot tall, golden, metal golem. "Ugh... always stiff..." Valeria's voice rang metallic, but she managed her own chuckle as she started out into the woods.
Hopefully, she would be at the front of the group. "Don't worry, just tell her which way to go. She's good at taking hits like this... and it shouldn't be hard for her to force open some paths, either."
So, they had their way forward covered, and someone watching their sides. With a bit of luck and a good navigator, Ami thought, this maze could be a cinch!
... Why was it never that easy...

It seemed for now, the main other person discussing strategy going forward was Koneka, and that was mostly just to dispute his maze point. "Outside wall has to become the inside wall eventually," he said, forming a dead end with one hand and tracing his finger around the side to demonstrate. "But you're right. We'd take forever doing that, and if we take that long there's no telling how severe the corruption can get.
So we've got two main ideas. Stick together, and don't do anything reckless." That last one was a pointed reminder at himself. Isaac's urge to do good at any cost had gotten him in deep trouble before. Today not ending up a repeat of the D-Reaper mission was quite high on his wishlist. "I'll take the rear. I'm sensitive enough to hear an ambush coming, if anything lurking in this maze tries falling in step behind us," he added, cracking his neck somewhat as he faded into the group's shadow. Now, at the very least, if an assailant tried to get the jump on them Cion wouldn't be the first in the line of fire. Keeping squishier targets in the middle was always a good plan in Isaac's book.
"Well as I could be," he said in response to Cion's question, occasionally dragging a claw across the walls of the maze in order to feel what it was like. If there was a weak spot in the wall they could plow through for a shortcut, he'd want to make note of that by carving in a big, jagged X. Beyond that he mostly kept quiet, a low droning sound occasionally gurgling up from his throat. Don't worry, it was every bit as annoying for Isaac as it was for everyone else here.

(OOC: Skipping Satoshi since it's been too long).
As the group proceeded into the forest, the black data seemed to ripple a bit, as though being caught in a gust of wind. However, no wind could reach this far into the twisted maze of thorns and wood. The ripple disappeared along the path directly forward, leaving behind the thin layer of black data at ankle height.
The forest was completely silent other than the noise being made by those in the present party. No bird or insect digimon could be heard, which was a sign that it was as Sunflowmon said. Most of the digimon had evacuated the forest.
That was to say... most digimon had.
If one listened closely, they would hear sounds on the path ahead. The sound of a twig snapping underfoot, but only if they were careful to hear.
Before long, they would come to a fork in the path. One path led right, and the other went straight ahead.

Not many responded to her attempts to establish cooperation in the group, but ultimately she realized that this was not even necessary. Everyone had already assumed a role that suited their abilities best, and the positioning was fine as well. Two powerful at the front, than she and the other not so powerful one, and another one of great might behind them. That way, they were protected from all conceiveable sites, and at least she could support her allies without distraction.
Nodding to Isaac, they calmly moved on, eventually reaching a junction. One way lead to the right, one straight ahead. Since they were not splitting up, they had to decide which direction to go towards. "So... any opinion? As I see it, we know nothing about either way." She suggested, believing that ultimately, they had no other choice but follow the path blindly. If there was someone with a secret power or good reasoning to suggest otherwise, now it was their time to shine.
The Arnamon was confused by the black mass of data that appeared to shift in accordance to the group's movement, as if it was sentient or controlled by something. Was it perhaps part of an ability by a very powerful, fiendish digimon? Whatever was the case, she would make sure to tread carefully.
It was completely silent, yet her focus allowed her to make out the sound of a breaking branch, her head instinctively facing the direction whence the sound came. "Noises coming from straight ahead. Confrontation or avoidance?" She asked the others, which was basically an addition to her previous question of either heading straight ahead or to their right.

John and Casimeir took their position toward the middle of the group and decided that for now, the Agumon would stay at the Rookie level. Everyone seemed to have agreed on a general plan of action for tackling the maze of corruption, so as of right now they did not feel a need to contribute further to their collective efforts. After all, John and his partner could somewhat gather that the others had much more experience than them when it came to missions; a gathering that they were happy to be a part of.
Cion chimed in to ask the group for their opinion on which direction they should go. Both paths appeared to be viable options. The black data was certainly disconcerting. John couldn't shake the feeling that the goo-like substance was going to stain his sneakers and a portion of his pants permanently. However, the snapping of the twig caught the attention of the partners.
Confrontation, or avoidance? "Well," John would answer in a gentle voice as to not draw attention from whatever lied ahead, "with the capabilities of the people on our team, we should have nothing to worry about since we could more than likely take care of it, whatever it is. On the other hand, we don't want to be split up. We don't know what the potential threat is capable of. I vote that we avoid it."

If there was one thing to say, it was that this group's formation was pretty solid.
At the front of the group, Valeria's job was to keep an eye straight forward on the path, and be ready to stand against any sort of immediate threat. Ami wouldn't be far behind her Digimon, of course, but Koneka stood closer to the back. As a medic and more of a support Digimon, the cat felt quite comfortable sitting in the middle pocket near John and Casimeir, though still in earshot of the NeoDevimon. Everything was going smoothly enough for now... that was, until two things came up:
The fork in the road, and the apparent snapping twig in the distance. As Cion and Davis spoke up, Valeria's metallic voice rang through her armor: "You sure? I've definitely snapped more than a branch or two walking down the path like this-"
"No, if they heard it forward, then its not something you did, Val." Ami gave a nod, both to the Sagitamon and John. "So, the right it is-"
"No." Koneka's voice called out from the back, the cat shaking her head. "If this corruption is spreading, its spreading from a central source. If we go right, we'll have to take a left turn back into the noise anyway... getting sidetracked is a waste of time. Besides, anything could have caused that twig to break. The entire woods is falling apart around us."
"Mhm! If we stop and avoid every little breaking branch, we'll have nowhere to go but straight out of the forest! I say, straight on ahead!"
"Oh, boy..." Ami sighed. "But the cat's right... gonna have to knuckle down eventually... my vote's forward."

Isaac had enough of corrupted data for one lifetime. Rather than risk dealing with this he pulled his legs up, flying over the ankle-high pool of swarming data. NeoDevimon's form of flight was always quite awkward. He hovered at the same eye level as he usually did, but remained almost curled up in a ball so that he didn't touch the ground with his feet. It was bizarre. "Nasty stuff," Isaac hissed, reaching to run a finger in the gunk before thinking better of it. "Must be doing a number on here."
At least he dutifully continued marking the trees they passed with an X, ensuring that the group wouldn't get lost. That is, of course, until he suddenly heard the snapping of a twig up ahead. His head immediately snapped from the tree he focused on to the snapping coming from above. Even the X he drew was interrupted, trailing off and looking more like a diagonal, wobbly cross. Damnit. That asymmetry was going to bug him. "Twig," he said, immediately zeroing in on the source of the sound. "Crushed underfoot. We're not alone here. Friend or foe?
Need to find out. We are not turning our backs on this. Not while it's still unknown" Isaac's statements were short, but an almost alarmed tone backed them up. He was clearly trying to mitigate it, but some of NeoDevimon's idiosyncrasies were starting to bleed through the spirit's form. In particular, his paranoia in the face of incoming danger, an unfortunate side effect of his incredibly sensory abilities.
"Can we scout ahead? Too big a force'd tip it off, a small enough one might catch their guard down," he offered. It was one thing not to turn one's back on a threat, but another entirely to walk into it with open arms and a fruit basket. Confronting danger had to be done with a clear head and focus, not a mob.

As soon as he had been called to attention, Satoshi was out of it again. He lollygagged behind the rest of the group in silence for a bit, but another punch in the leg from Gabumon snapped Satoshi back to reality. "Oh!" he gasped again. "What happened?"
"You've been spacing off since we left, man," Gabumon scolded. "You really should try to get your head in the game. We're a part of this team, so we need to contribute."
Satoshi sighed. "You're right. My bad." Satoshi wondered for a moment if it was too late to back out, but quickly shook those thoughts out of his head and lightly jogged to catch back up with the rest of the group.

The swirling black data was not quite thick enough to form as liquid yet. Indeed, it was more of a mist, hovering above the morass of rotted and dry leaves that covered the path. However, the further one stepped into the labyrinth, the thicker it would get.
Because the party remained standing in place, if they heard carefully, they would also hear a faint, but constant noise joining with the occasional snapping of twigs. This time, no wood was broken, but instead, it would sound like a rapid, yet low frequency beating of wings.
If they looked at the path above, they would see an object moving in the distance. Even if the sun struggled to get through the twisted canopy above, they would spot something shining on the object's lower region. Was it armor? Or a weapon.
Two digimon are present. They have not yet noticed your approach. However, they are alert for intruders.

Standing still at the divergency, the Sagitamon listened carefully to any and all suggestions the other members of her team made. Unfortunately, all of them were vastly different, which was why attaining consensus was difficult. John suggested to avoid confrontation as much as possible, since they would face many unknowns. Definetly an intelligent way of evaluating things, but the cat's suggestion was not silly either. After all, many bad things could happen if they avoided every single confrontation, like ambushes and alike. Perhaps seizing the opportunity now was better. Elliot on the other hand proposed to scout ahead first, preferring a more cautious approach.
"Oh dear..." Cion whispered, a bit disheartened by the discord within the group in terms of agreeing with a plan. Before she could say something, she heard the faint noises of a winged entity moving in the distance, which was likely the being they had heard before as well. If this being was a digimon, than it had certain advantages, but also decreased mobility in the tight corridors of the maze. Folding her arms, she eventually sighed and turned to face all members of the group, giving all of them a confident nod.
"Sorry John, but I gotta go with confrontation, too. Currently, we outnumber it, but it may be us being outnumbered later if we avoid all battles. My plan is, to comply with Elliot, to have two of you as frontliners. Preferrably those powerful and with heavy armor. From behind, I can support you with crowd control and sustain. But I also need one of you, hopefully with a couple of ranged offensive or utility abilities, to guard my back, as to avoid ambushes." She proposed, taking in the looks and opinions of the others. "Any additions or objections?"

Satoshi wasn't sure how he felt about confrontation, but the plan that the NeoDevimon proposed was a solid one. "I think scouting around might be our best option. As much as I hate to split everyone up, I think it might be best for now?"
Gabumon, however, didn't agree. "I say we just take these guys out! C'mon, Satoshi, I can take 'em, no problem!"
Satoshi rapped Gabumon on the top of the head to scold him. "Calm down. You'll get your chance to show off later." After properly scolding his unruly partner, he turned to the rest of the group. "How do you guys want to group up? I think we should stick to two groups. Maybe one can scout ahead while the other runs diversion and offense?"

John and Casimeir glanced to Satoshi and Gabumon. The Gabumon's enthusiasm had certainly stoked the flames of determination in the human and Agumon pair. Satoshi, however, expressed some interest in splitting the group up. It was a contrast to what the team had planned from the beginning, and John and his partner believed it would not be the best option. "Sorry to disagree," John mentioned with sympathy, "but we should stick with our plan and trudge through this maze together. The others are right. Just avoiding everything could be disastrous. There's strength in numbers, and I know for a fact that we can take care of the corruption without even breaking a sweat." John looked at Satoshi with a gleam in his eyes. "Don't worry. You have me to back you up."The Agumon nodded in agreement with his partnered human. "That's right, Satoshi. You and Gabumon can count on the both of us. We're good friends, aren't we?" A confident smile creased the corners of Casimeir's lips with that statement. "What kind of roommates would we be, otherwise?"John's smile mirrored Casimeir's. "We can do this. All of us. Together." He looked down to his dinosaur Digimon, keeping that grin. "What do you say? Ready to Digivolve?" The human grasped his Digivice, already knowing his partner's answer. Of course, Casimeir gave him an expected answer. "Do you even have to ask? Let's do this!"With a minor flash from John's Digivice, he raised it into the air and his Agumon was enveloped in a light blue light. "Agumon! Digivolve to...!" The silhouette morphed and grew, growing larger and wider while Casimeir underwent his transformation. It finally reached a whopping twenty-six feet in height! The light soon dispersed to reveal a full-grown Champion. "Greymon!"John would never grow tired of watching his Digimon partner transform; he knew that was for certain. But for now, he would have to keep a clear mind and focus on contributing to the team. "We'll stay in the middle of the group to offer support. Cas here has some ranged attacks, so we're good to go. Keeping a balanced strength throughout the formation would be nice. That being said, I'll take any direction as to where we should be. This is our first time on a mission, so we're more than happy to get any constructive criticism."

Well, with the repeated noise, Koneka wouldn't deny that there was probably another Digimon or some sort of creature down the center path. But at this point, considering they had several uninterrupted moments to discuss the situation and even hold a vote, it was also very clear that whoever was out there either didn't notice them or didn't care that they were there. Perhaps the two down the path weren't actually threats?
Still, there was definitely a few good ideas to consider, though Koneka quickly countered Isaac's idea to scout: "No, look down. That smog that started just at your feet is now up to your ankles... if you scout too far forward, you might never find your way back to the group."
"Well, Cion's straightforward approach it is," Ami sighed, as Valeria took a nod. The definite 'heavy armor' type stood to the front of the group, arms raised, ready to-
...
What the hell, John. Immediately, Koneka filtered that light through her glove, and gave a 'tsk' through her fangs. "Damn it... Ami, keep mega at the ready! Valeria, turn just a touch left, and go!"
The cat's sudden barked orders was in stark contrast to John's calm discussion after his Digivolution, but the air between all three of them changed in an instant. Ami merely gave a nod, a sharp sense of focus entering her eyes as she held her Digivice at the ready, the screen already glowing as she stored up energy for the next form.
Valeria, meanwhile, leaned forward, and took off in a full sprint, right through the path Koneka prescribed, straight towards the snapping twigs of the two yet-to-be-seen Digimon. The golem's approach was anything but subtle: as Koganemon picked up speed, twigs and branches broke against her metal frame, even barrelling through entire trees to cut a path straight through! And she wouldn't slow down on her approach either, instead aiming to ram right into wherever that noise was, with the effective force of a speeding semi truck!
"Tch... think before you give us all away!" Koneka shared a brief glare to John, finally explaining herself. By Digivolving with that grand lightshow, this human had just given away the entire group! "Nothing left to do but follow-through, let's go!"

It sounded like, at least for now, stealth would be off of the table. With how quickly the tide of corruption was rising, even keeping within the group's field of vision could've been risky. And that wasn't even counting the fact that if the scouting party was caught off guard, they could've easily been turned into two easily ambushed groups rather than one cohesive hole. While NeoDevimon was quite the strong sentry, he wasn't perfect. Even with his awareness, a slipped detail at the wrong time would spell disaster. It probably was better to hold closely onto the tight nexus of power that they already had control of. "Might as well," Isaac concluded, floating up by Ami, Koneka, and Valeria's side. With the others keeping to the back with Cion, it seemed like these four would be the advanced vanguards for today. "Not the first time I've had to get these hands dirty."
Of course, Casimeir made it obvious why he was keeping to the middle. Jesus, did they even make Greymon that big? Such a huge Digimon could easily be fire support from the back without getting in anyone's way. That said, the sudden burst of light and sound probably wasn't good for stealth, and Isaac had to restrain the urge to flick his claws out as soon as he was hit by the sudden disturbance. No. There was a goal. He had to focus, not let himself get caught up in the lights like a goddamn moth!
When his focus returned to him and the slight ringing in his ears subsided, he noticed Koneka already barking orders to the rest of the team, or at least their little trio. They went from calm and collected to a cohesive unit in seconds. It was almost admirable how quickly they snapped into action, and rather than get left behind Isaac made a point of following Valeria into battle. In this case, the following was quite literal. His wings allowed him to catch the air and glide after her, almost drifting along the path she was tearing through the labyrinth. Not only would he be hard to hear over the golem's rush, but by quite literally waiting in her shadow he'd be much harder to see as well.
From there, Isaac could simply wait and see what his next move would be. Valeria would get the pleasure of having the first strike, but he'd be right there in her shadow to score the follow up against any potential hostiles. Through fighting hard and fighting smart simultaneously, they could help take out any threats that may have been distracted by the sudden flash of a Digivolution.

Even if the light from the digivice and the digivolution shone a little, the two digimon on alert did not notice it. The mist of black data that they were standing in, it only registered their life forces. So much as the creatures in this labyrinth knew, they knew that others were present, but, its corrupted data seemed to be blind to the input from digivices. The only thing it registered was threats. And the digimon that this entity controlled? They were unable to react in any way other than how they were controlled. So therefore they were not alerted either. However, the digimon on alert, while not necessarily responding to stimuli such as digivolution light, they could detect when another digimon was approaching. And thus, when Valeria made a rush toward them, both of them responded. The two digimon alerted were a Mothmon and a Zassoumon. Since Valeria was the most direct threat, Mothmon aimed at her first. "Morphon Gatling!" it screeched, the gatling cannon on its abdomen spinning and beginning to fire at her. Zassoumon meanwhile has a different objective at hand. "Toxic Harvest!" it snarled, planting its vines into the ground. Immediately, a wall of thorny brambles blocked the path ahead, the thorns dripping with purple ooze. If one attempted to cut through this, well, they would be in a lot of pain indeed.
Two enemy digimon present, Zassoumon and Mothmon. Mothmon uses Morphon Gatling on Valeria
Morphon Gatling - Spins its tail gatling gun, sending a burst of rapid fire bullets at the target. Zassoumon uses Toxic Harvest on the path ahead.
Toxic Harvest - Plants its vines into the ground, immediately forming a barrier of poisonous thorns to block the path ahead. These thorns can only be destroyed without penalty by projectile attacks. If direct contact occurs meanwhile, those that make contact with the poisonous thorns will receive minor damage for 3 turns.
