And so it has come to this. Dante, a lone Tamer, begrudgingly marches on through the muddy waters on the path before him. He is making his way towards the Grotto of Sorrow, a mysterious cavern located in the Dark Area. Why is he heading there? What is he searching for, or whom? Dante and his boastful Digimon partner Wormmon had come to the Dark Area while on a mission, but things went awry. Someone he had trusted betrayed them, and this wicked act would set things for Dante down a different path. He didn't know it yet, but his morality, his beliefs, and his views on the world around him would be shattered to their cores, broken, and remolded. Many dangers await ahead in the grotto, but not all threats come from raw power. Not all enemies make their presence felt. Some threats are quiet.
It all started not long after Dante's recent adventures. Battling sorceresses in a strange medieval land, fighting a horde of bandits in the desert, even a date gone wrong, ending up in a rescue mission against a pair of vile femme fatales. The next mission was an entirely different beast. While on these adventures, Dante had started to notice a pattern. Random events of destruction kept coming up. And it all can be traced back to Gram and Lindsay, a pair of hackers encountered while facing Myrgamon. Gram was not ashamed of his selfishness. He admitted to Dante that he and his friends were conspiring with Sorcerimon to influence the business market for their own gain. Buying up stock, destroying competing businesses, hacking financial files, someone had assembled a criminal network of some of the most cruel and sinister egomaniacs, all working together to further their control. This mission was about bringing the fight to them, but it would ultimately prove futile.
Dante finally reaches the entrance. He pulls the hood of his cloak up and brushes his hair out of his eyes. He sees the opening of a dark cave. He takes a few steps inside to get out of the rain. Dante takes out his lighter and lights up a cigarette. This was the first chance he had to smoke since getting caught in the storm. It was definitely a bad habit, but he lacks the desire, and the willpower, to willingly give up smoking. Dante reaches into his bag and pulls out a small lantern. Without some source of light, he would be wandering around in total darkness. Dante ventures into the cave, careful to watch his every step. He can hear dripping water, and cave-dwelling bats further inside. He reaches a split in the path, one leading to the left, and the other to the right. He picks a direction at random, as he didn't know much about the grotto or what dwells within.
The underground network had to be stopped. Even with Sorcerimon and three of Gram's friends gone, their faction seemed to thrive. They lured Domon the Gazimon in with promises of power, turning him into the Walking Graveyard SkullGreymon. The behemoth destroyed much of the Server Woods, throwing the Digital World's economy into chaos. Dante had teamed up with some Tamers he met during his time with the DATS organization, and they set off to confront the underground network at one of their bases in the Dark Area. With so many elite Tamers working together, surely these criminals and hackers would be dealt with. It was all a trap. The network had lured the Tamers there with claims of leaked information exposing their base, but they were being lead there to eliminate the network's opposition. The destruction was most severe.
