Yes, it was a rather crazy evening. Bellamy had planned the engagement for a long time, but Gaz, dinner and now this were truly unexpected. Initially he second-guessed his decision to let his son do this, but, thinking about it from Finn's point of view, the Guilmon-X may have been thinking about this for a long time too. Colin meanwhile wasn't taking any chances. He immediately took out an evolution card and evolved Luke to his Mega form at once. The Fulminomon stood at his side, his arms folded. "If either of you get hurt, I'll heal you" he promised. He didn't want to see his brother or his nephew injured. Plus he could tell from the look on Bellamy's face that he didn't want to lose. The Impmon took his place opposite his son, then realized all at once just how big he was. Those teeth, those claws, that dragon hide... Finn looked like he could snap the small skinny Impmon in two, but it wasn't with brute force that Bellamy fought. He would fight with magic. Still, he had prepared for this, steeled himself for weeks for the horrors of the Dark Area. This would be a test for him too. Bellamy stood ready, raising his left hand, focusing all he could, but still, he trembled. "Are you scared, Finn?" Bellamy asked. "You should be... because I am".This was a lesson that the both of them needed to learn. Bellamy would wait for Finn to make the first move. But still, he felt the need to encourage him.
"Good luck, son".

Finn couldn't lie and say he wasn't scared. Bellamy was powerful, he recognized that. However, if he was ever going to show that he could grow on his own, he had to cast his thoughts of his father aside and fight him like he would any other opponent.
It seemed that Bellamy was offering Finn the first move. He decided to start the fight off appropriately. He raised the tip of one of his claws, and a small fireball popped to life as if it were coming out of a lighter. "Baddaboom!" With his best Brooklyn accent, Finn called forth one of his father's own signature attacks to use against him.
Coronamon quietly watched. He was thankful that Fulminomon was on standby to heal any injuries, but he was still insanely worried. He had sparred with Finn a few times when he first started training for the expedition, and though he had a lot to learn, he was terrifyingly strong. If he got a solid hit on Bellamy while they were both in their Rookie forms, it had the potential to seriously hurt him. He grimaced a bit and clasped his hands together to pray to whatever Digital God would listen.

Gaz watched all this on the sideline, standing on Colin's other side. She was a bit nervous too, but still, excited to see just what her brother and father could do. She could see that neither of them fought with hate in their eyes, but a burning determination.
And Finn launched his first move. Bellamy was surprised, but, the incoming fireball wasn't fast enough to catch him off guard. And while strength wasn't the Impmon's forte, well, he was both a small target, and fast.
Before the fireball could hit, Bellamy made a lithe lunge to the side, he could feel the heat of the fireball on his fur as it missed half a foot to his right. And in response, he began to run in a wide curve around Finn, both arms raised and glowing blue. A spinning blue circle of light shone in front of him.
"Freeze Lancer!" he cried, sending a storm of ice shards at the Guilmon-X. He knew Finn was a bigger target, but he could take a lot more damage than he could. Anyone would know that, especially the monsters that lurked in the dark area, how would Finn respond to his speed and relentless magic?

Finn figured that his initial attack wouldn't do much to deter his opponent, who easily managed a skillful dodge. Finn watched intently as Bellamy curved his way around Finn, and recognized that an attack was coming as the circle of light appeared in front of the Impmon. Before even announcing an attack, an aura of fire surrounded Finn completely.
Coronamon's eyes widened as he recognized the ability Finn was displaying. "That's my Corona Cloak!" As stressful as the situation was, Coronamon couldn't help but swell with pride as he saw his son successfully pull off the technique he had taught him.
Time seemed to slow down as Finn scanned the battlefield. It was time for him to make a snap decision. Would he use Corona Cloak to defend against the Freeze Lancer completely? Or was he brave enough to risk a bit of damage to get a hit in? With a roar, he decided on the latter, charging straight through the ice shards and hopefully right into Bellamy before he had a chance to finish his attack. He felt some sharp pain as some of the shards dug into his skin, but it was nothing he couldn't handle!

Bellamy's eyes widened as Finn countered with his Corona Cloak technique. Of course, a perfect defense against Ice. Furthermore, he followed up by immediately closing the distance between himself and Bellamy, aiming for a close quarter battle.
The Impmon had been bracing for this since the fight began. He knew that Finn could seriously hurt him with melee attacks, so he needed to open the distance again. This would be hard though, given he was already attacking.
'He ain't scared to fight all out... that's good' Bellamy noted. But, if Finn was to be truly ready for the Dark Area, he had to be prepared for anything.
As nimble as a cat, Bellamy leapt high as Finn came in for the hit, but much to his frustration, he couldn't clear his tail out of the way in time, and yelped in pain as burning purple fur went flying from being scratched and burned. But he didn't let that hold him back.
"Baddaboom!" he cried in response, hurling a magenta fireball straight down toward Finn's back, then landed several feet away, backing off but keeping his dominant left hand raised to counter. He panted a little at the exertion of that move, his tail smoldering a little.
"Not bad, Finn" he said, a bit of pride in his boy showing itself in his face. "What else ya got for me?"

Finn was starting to get a bit frustrated. Bellamy was just too fast and nimble to get a solid hit in. He had managed to graze the little devil with his last attack, but he was quickly countered with a return Baddaboom. The dragon staggered, but didn't fall. He just turned back to face his father with a determined look.
"I'm only getting started!" Finn assured his opponent. From his expression, it'd be pretty clear that he wasn't bluffing. However, his new strategy didn't seem very well thought out. He seemed to be charging at Bellamy head-on, his fist ready to strike. "Rock Breaker!"
"What's he doing?" Marshal wondered. "There's no way Bellamy will get hit by an attack like that." He looked down at Coronamon, who offered no sort of reaction. Instead, he watched as intently as possible. it seemed he had recognized something that Marshal hadn't, or at least had prior knowledge of a strategy similar to this.

The look of pride on Bellamy's face turned to a frown as Finn seemed to run straight at him. While before things were different because Bellamy was already conjuring a spell as the Guilmon-X approached, not this time. Bellamy knew all too well that running at an opponent ready to strike was a very poor idea. Yet... was Finn doing a trick?
Still, Bellamy had to teach his son a lesson. Doing this in the Dark Area was a surefire way to get hit, and strike, he would.
"Semper Fire!" the Impmon snarled, clicking his fingers. In a flash of orange light, an eruption of fire shot from his paw, aimed directly at Finn. If it hit, it would wash the red and white dragon with fire. Not enough to kill, but enough to show him that he meant business, and was not holding back here. He'd punish mistakes and fight just as hard as a predator of the Dark Area would.
"Oh no, Finn!" Gaz cried, surprised at just how fearsome her father's attacks could get.

Finn smirked. Bellamy had taken the bait! As he shot off his Semper Fire attack, everyone else would be able to see Finn lower his fist.
Marshal was stunned as he saw the fireball crash straight into Finn, accompanied by a small explosion. He looked over at Coronamon, expecting a shred of concern for his son, but Coronamon kept his intent stare. In fact, he seemed to be attempting not to grin!
"He got hit!" Marshal cried. "This could be bad!"
"Not quite," Coronamon said in response. "Bellamy miscalculated a bit. He forgot to account for something." Before the smoke could clear, another fire could be faintly seen in the center. "Our Crests are both the Crest of Tenacity, but he didn't take our son's own tenacity into consideration!"
Seemingly undeterred, Finn shot out of the smoke, fully shrouded in another Corona Cloak. He had visible scuffs and damage from the attack, but still he persisted! "Like I said, I'm only getting started!" he shouted at Bellamy as he charged straight at him. This was his chance to turn the tides if he could make his charge before Bellamy was able to regroup.
"Wow!" Marshal exclaimed. "Finn's amazing!"
"It's a pretty reckless strategy," Coronamon admitted, "but if anyone has the endurance for something like that, it's Finn."

Bellamy thought the force of the explosion would knock Finn back and break off his attack. His Semper Fire was his strongest ability in his Rookie Level anyway, and he rarely used it because of just how much it took out of him. So he wasn't expecting Finn to continue to advance. The Impmon's green eyes widened as Finn approached. And yet Bellamy was still recovering from the exertion used in his last attack.
"Bellamy!" Luke cried in shock as the flaming Guilmon-X charged forward. Bellamy tried to sidestep, but he couldn't move fast enough. It was all he could do to raise his right arm to block the attack, but the sheer mass of his son sent him flying back a dozen feet through the air, then crashed to the ground, his fur smouldering.
"Bells, hold still, I'll heal you..." Luke began, but Bellamy halted him with a signal from his left hand. Growling, the Impmon got back to his feet, clutching at his right arm, data bleeding from a nasty scratch.
"No, Luke, not yet" he said. This was as much a lesson for him as it was for Finn. He had underestimated his opponent, and now he was paying the price. He would need to do better next. He turned to Finn.
"Well, Finn, you fight pretty well..." he said, giving a smile. Seemed the Crest of Tenacity's data flowed strongly in him after all. "But you're gonna be facin' worse than pipsqueak rookies in the Dark Area, believe me". With that, he turned to his partner. "Colin, evolve me!"
"You're sure...?" Colin asked, hesitantly. Bellamy nodded, then Colin supposed he'd best do what his partner asked. He drew the evolution card from his pocket and scanned it through the D-Ark. At once, twin matchstick wands appeared in Bellamy's paws, one red and one blue.
"Impmon digivolve to...!" he cried, turning in a circle as the wands burst into flame. The residual fire lingered, drawing in to Bellamy's body, and finally extinguished to reveal a fiery outfit of shorts, boots, gloves, a robe and a hat over a human-sized Impmon. "FlaWizarmon!" he finished.
"This gets serious now, son" Bellamy assured him. Would Finn be able to match his level?

As Bellamy tumbled to the ground as a result of Finn's attack, a mixture of emotions struck the Guilmon. First, he was excited that he managed to get a solid hit on his opponent! Second, it was a little upsetting to see his father look so beat up like that, even if they were fighting. Uncle Luke had offered to heal him, but Bellamy refused. Finn smiled at his father's praise, but bristled once more when Bellamy Digivolved into his Champion form. This was it! Time to show what he could do. "I'll go all out, then!"For a moment, the battlefield was quiet. Everyone looked on in anticipation as Finn concentrated with all his might. Finally, a red spark of energy could be seen. It started as a single spark, then two, then more and more until a dark red flame covered Finn's entire body. In an instant, the familiar light of Digivolution overtook the flames and catalyzed Finn's first public Digivolution. "Guilmon Digivolve to...Growlmon!"
If everyone had thought Finn was big before, they were in for a rude awakening. His Champion form more than doubled his previous size, causing to tower over even Fulminomon, the tallest being in attendance. Everything about Finn had become more menacing. His claws were sharper, his features were sleeker and more defined, and his muscles were intensely defined. "Ready for round two, Dad?" he asked. His voice was hardly recognizable at this point. The new towering appearance combined with the monstrous voice made Finn a truly intimidating and terrifying sight.

As the light of her family's evolution faded, Gaz was struggling with what she had to say. Seeing her brother fight this hard against her father's decision, it was starting to give her courage of her own. So before they would clash again, she felt the need to shout out.
"Dad! Wait!" she called to him. "If going to the dark area is too dangerous for Finn and me... why are you going?!"
Bellamy turned to her with surprise and frowned, giving a sigh. This was something he wished she wouldn't have asked. And she just had to twist the knife in further.
"You say you care about us, but... is revenge against Zanbamon this important to you? Is completing some assignment from Majiramon so critical? Why can't you wait...?!"
"BECAUSE I DON'T WANT THAT BASTARD ON THE SAME PLANET AS MY KIDS ALRIGHT?!" Bellamy snarled, rendering Gaz silent. "He's a Super Mega warlord and we've got history. He knows Luke and I still live. It's only a matter of time before he figures out we have family too... and we're goin' to kill him before he does that!"
Besides, there was the principle of it. That evil asshole had killed Impy and Leky and got away with it. That was a personal affront to Bellamy, which was why he needed this expedition to take place.
"O...okay" Gaz said, managing to understand her father's reasoning a little better, but still, it hurt to see him be so angry. She leaned in toward her other father, hoping Coronamon had more helpful words to say.
"Right, Finn, let's go!" Bellamy said, not afraid of the Growlmon X, even though he was now twice his height. Bellamy's first spell was cast immediately. "Aether Osmose!" he pointed his blue matchstick wand to send a jet of blue fire at Finn. If it hit, it would draw out blue data from Finn's body, arcing in a draining motion to both drain Finn and restore Bellamy's strength slightly.

Coronamon listened as Gaz and Bellamy argued. He wished deep down that their first day together didn't have to be like this, but it seemed that Finn was ready to prove himself and just couldn't wait. Coronamon looked to his newly found daughter and sighed. "I know how you're feeling, Gaz," he said, "but you aren't ready for the Dark Area. I've been there before and have barely made it out alive both times. Finn might just barely be able to join us if he really proves himself here, but we can only take him along in good faith if we're sure he can handle himself. We can't divide our focus between fighting potential threats and keeping you two safe. You have to be absolutely prepared." The fact remained that they weren't even sure what level Gaz was able to reach. She didn't seem capable of much beyond Rookie. Finn had just revealed his Champion form to them, but as Coronamon looked into his eyes, he couldn't help but feel that his son was still holding out on them. The potential hidden within him was unreal, as evidenced by his rapid growth in physical and mental ability. Just a few short weeks ago Finn had seemed just like a literal child to the two of them, but now he seemed more like an older teenager, perhaps even a young adult.
Meanwhile, the fight between Bellamy and Finn raged on as the FlaWizarmon launched a stream of blue flame at the Growlmon-X. Before, Finn lacked in the projectile department, but now he felt more than ready to take this threat head-on. "Pyroblaster!" he roared. Finn opened his jaw wide and shot out a burning white orb of flame to combat Bellamy's attack. Finn hoped that the attacks would just cancel each other out, leaving him an opening to attack further.

Gaz listened to her father's words and found she could say nothing in response. He was right. Even though she knew the memories that haunted Bellamy, it was simply too much to ask for them to go with them, or to stop them going. She could tell right away that Bellamy and Coronamon had accepted her as their daughter, but, if their enemies hurt her, that would hurt them both deeply too.
So instead, all she could do was watch the battle. Still though, she reached for Coronamon's paw, hoping that holding him could provide her comfort. And, as the battle continued, Bellamy and Finn's champion level attacks collided with each other, both exploding without affecting the other. Deep down, Gaz hoped her brother could succeed.
"Finn, believe me, I would be so proud to have you fight by our side against Zanbamon" Bellamy said to the Growlmon-X. "You are my own data, blended with Coronamon's, created with love, same as your sister. It would be beautiful if we took him out as a family, but... what if he took us out? You know how cruel he was..." Bellamy's eyes watered a little with tears again as he remembered just how painful those last moments were.
"First he ruined Luke's eye..." the FlaWizarmon explained. "Then, this hand here" he raised his left hand, the one with the red matchstick wand. "He cut it clean off too. How... how could I go on if I saw him do that to my own son?!"
Wordlessly, he cast his Razing Prominence attack at Finn, a jet of flames rushing straight at the Growlmon-X. Bellamy part wanted this battle to just stop, but, the longer Finn held in against his own power, the more he could be convinced that maybe, just maybe, Finn was strong enough to prove himself.

Coronamon noticed Gaz reaching for his paw. She was nervous about this, and Coronamon could relate. He hadn't known the details about Luke and Bellamy's previous death, but it seemed like Zanbamon was truly nobody to be messed with.
Finn, meanwhile, decided to just continue fighting instead of being concerned with what Bellamy was saying. He was just trying to scare him out of doing what he felt he needed to do. Angered that his father would resort to something like that, even if it was because he cared so much, Finn went into a rage. He used his powerful legs to leap into the air, out of the way of Bellamy's stream of fire.
"I'm not scared!" Finn shouted. "I'll take on that Zanbamon and make him pay for what he did to you! I may not have your memories like Gaz does, but that doesn't mean I don't understand!" He raised his arm above his head, a single claw pointing toward the night sky. In a flick, a giant fireball sparked above his fingertip, just like earlier. "BADDA-FREAKIN'-BOOM!" The stronger version of Bellamy's own signature move was dropped down towards the ground straight for Bellamy.

Watching all this, Colin was starting to get a little frightened with the intensity of the attacks that were being hurled around here. He turned to his partner, hoping the Fulminomon might be able to address his concerns. "Luke, are they... really going for broke here?" he asked.
"It's fine, Colin" Luke answered. "They're not trying to kill each other, they're... just both trying to make a point". Luke could tell that with his brother being a twin digimon and his nephew being a mercenary grade they were evenly matched, and he could tell that neither of them were truly trying to do mortal damage to the other. But... it made it all the harder to watch. He didn't know who would win here. And his ties to his twin brother made his right eye glow occasionally as their fraternal bond raised old memories. But he would not interfere, his brother's duel was with his son alone.
Bellamy meanwhile snarled with rage at Finn's reaction. "You should be scared!!" he yelled. "Zanbamon is three levels higher than you! He'd only have to look at you to kill you!"
Finn then attacked with a fireball that resembled their own attacks at Rookie level. Bellamy's green eyes widened, but then narrowed as he focused to concentrate.
"You're... not... strong... enough... yet!" the Flawizarmon snarled back, both of his wands blazing, then he pointed them at his son, tears streaming from his eyes as he felt compelled to let his stubborn child just understand what overwhelming power was. "GEMFIRE BLAZER!!" he screamed, aiming to counter the attack with twin streams of twisting fire, an all-out attack that would both sap Finn's energy and damage him, but not enough to kill him. Yet... if Finn could counter this, perhaps... it could refute the sentence he had spoken before.
