6:30 pm, one mile south of the Naka-Meguro Station. With significant delay, Yukiko Armstrong finally arrived home. A small apartment complex, built sometime in the 1970s, when Japan's economy had been booming. About six families lived in the small complex. It had room for 7, but Yukiko's father had received ownership over the complex about 2 years ago, upon which he kept one apartment for his daughter. It was the smallest of the seven apartments, originally built for the housekeeper, but Yukiko was fine with this. She didn't need much more than a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom. And right now, she needed the lattermost the most.
As soon as she had opened her door and dropped her shoes and jacket she collapsed onto her bed. She stared at the ceiling, where the recently installed fan had gathered dust from disuse. Her thoughts raced, swirled, and did wild backflips inside her head. Digimon...AEGIS...what did these things mean? She took another look at her transformed cell phone.
After Yukiko had let her thoughts race inside her head for a good 10 minutes she sat up, grabbed her laptop from the desk in the corner of her bedroom, and opened the lid. If there were answers to be found, they would be found online. As the screen lit up, and showed her worryingly cutesy wallpaper of a cute magical girl, Yukiko cracked her knuckles in an exaggerated fashion, and walked the web in search for answers.
As expected, searches for "Digimon" led to a while bunch of forums where people claim to have seen monsters, but who are dismissed by others. "Pics or it didn't happen" was a common reply. However, deep within the bowels of the search engine, Yukiko did stumble over a number of blogs which described a similar accord in worrying detail. One even had a few blurry pictures. Could it be true? One of these blogs even mentioned AEGIS, an organization dedicated to solving Digimon-related incidents.
As Yukiko read on, something caught her eye. In the corner of her screen, a pop-up had appeared. "How do you feel about sweet and talented girls?”. She blinked. Was...was this a virus? She clicked the button to close the pop-up, but it reappeared, now saying "Hey, don't ignore me!". She closed it once more, this time it said "Rude! Apologise!", and a chat field opened inside it. Yukiko could not believe what she was seeing. Slowly, she typed "I'm....sorry?" into the field. The pop-up then said "Apology accepted! Now then, how do you feel about sweet and talented girls?". Yukiko felt like an idiot when she replied "I, uh, think they are cool.". Then, the pop-up said "Great!~", and her screen began to glow...
...Yukiko had blacked out for about five minutes, and found herself on her bed, staring at the ceiling, her laptop still on her lap. And...something warm was on her belly. She looked down...and looked right into the red, smiling eyes of some sort of green frog creature with an orange mohawk.
"Haha! Here I am! your sweet and talented girl!"
Yukiko could only stare in shock.
"E-e-e-eeeeeeh! W-w-w-who are you?! W-w-w-what are you!?"
The frog chuckled, and tried to brush its hair back with its stubby, clawed leg.
"I am Mizu-chan, the cutest girl I know! But you can call me Mizu!~ I am a Betamon, and I wanna be your friend!~"
"B-b-b-b-betamon? W-w-w-what does that mean!?"
"Hey, you got one of those Digivice things, don't you? I felt that, and I followed the feeling, and here I am! I feel like we're destined to be together!"
"W-w-w-wait, what? This makes no sense! No sense at all!"
"Maybe, but you know what else doesn't make sense? Language. Random sounds that suddenly mean something! Yet no one questions that!"
Yukiko could not believe this. Not only was this frog definitely real, it was sassing her! She gently set it down next to her, and sat up, holding her head.
"D-d-d-did you really come from my laptop?"
"Eh, I guess so! I just followed this feeling, then found a terminal, and there I saw this open communication panel, and whaddya know, it was you on the other end!"
"I...I don't understand..."
"Sometimes you just gotta gooooo with the flow!"
The frog then yawned.
"But man, did that make me tired, feels like I'm gonna-"
And with that, the frog fell down on the spot, asleep. Yukiko could only stare.
Instead of answers, she had gotten even more questions. What just happened? Where did this frog come from? And what are Digimon?
She knew one thing, however: She could not just throw this frog out. Something, deep inside of her, rebelled against the very notion. For now, all she could do was close her laptop, and lay back down. The fatigue of the day finally overwhelmed her, and she was out like a light.
Tomorrow, she would need to keep looking for answers.
