MPC 48A - Basile And Cinder - The Ides of March

Life had a funny way of working things out, Basile thought to himself as he overlooked his old room. As of today, he’d graduated from college with a near flawless academic record, Straight Yu’s or to use the American/European equivalent ‘A’s’. He’d spent an extraordinary amount of time in this dusty old room studying when he could have been out having fun with friends, spending time with his little sisters… The family was a traditional one, well as traditional as you can be with having a mixture of races and cultures. But they tried to appease both cultures and keep everybody happy, which is why he was moving out. Ides of March was an old and very popular tradition after all, it kept people moving forward, it kept them striving to improve themselves.
‘Ides of March’ what it really meant was a ‘settling of debts’ though it had eventually transitioned to ‘completion of something of great of importance’ it could have been anything, a personal project, a specific piece of artwork, finally opening that Arcade he’d always dreamt of as a kid, But as he looked around the white covered room, he couldn’t help but sink into old memories, hundreds of scenes appearing before his eyes, every time he cried in here. Every time he laughed, his first meeting with his Digimon, his first romance and subsequent car crash of a break up.
As he looked around at the spartanly-decorated room he couldn’t help but look back at his old life… He had a bed, a closet, a dresser… the normal sleeping amenities plus a computer and chair, it had helped tremendously over his studies. There was only one real piece of decoration that he could call his own, a single large board, about the size of A4 Paper, with dozens of Pins sticking things to it. Photographs of his favourite times, Tickets to Arcades, Movies and Conventions, Drawings he’d made of his siblings, Important Dates… It all lied on that board… He sighed, rubbing his eyes.
Everyone had to move on at some point, it did no good to stay stuck in the past, he should be looking to the future, he had his entire career ahead of him. He’d earned a fairly large sum of money over the years, doing the late shift at a local arcade. His parents had allowed his indulgence if it hadn’t hampered his studies, with the leash loosened slightly, Basile had done his best to outperform his year group and prove that he could handle a little responsibility. He’d succeeded naturally, but he’d lost most of his free time. Between studying, school and now his summer job, any social life he had managed to cultivate swiftly died from inattention, but everyone knew he was a hard worker and that was worth its weight in gold to the young Aryan boy. But then…why did it hurt so much?
The thought of leaving his home, his family… hurt, not physically, but emotionally. It was like being under the torrent of a waterfall, constantly weighing him down, beating his self confidence and self esteem down. He’d already packed everything he was taking and had been ‘ready’ to leave for 27 minutes and he was no further to leaving now as he was then. The infinite possibilities had been running through his head all day. What If he lost his job, What If someone broke into his new home, What If someone broke into his Family’s home, What If? What If? What If?
It was almost funny, if you’d asked him at any other time, he’d have never been so paranoid, but here he is. Panicking about futures that’ll never happen for things with consequences he’ll never have to deal with.
Cinder was perched on her tamers bed, lost in thought, a rare occurrence. She didn’t like it when her tamer was sad, she didn’t know how to handle sad. She could laugh when he was angry or embarrassed, tolerate him when he was happy or excited, reassure him when he was jealous of others… But sad wasn’t so easily defeated. Sadness was an insidious emotion, when it got it’s grips into you, even the most hardened people could be reduced to tears. Even cheering him up wouldn’t work, it would only stave off the inevitable.
Sadness was an emotion that you had no choice but to suffer through, and hope you came out stronger for the experience. Cinder didn’t like Sad, you couldn’t fight it. It gave no leeway on defeating it, you simply…dealt with it. An almost foreign emotion welled up in the little rookie as she felt her tamer’s conflicting emotions through their bond. Was this empathy? or was this just pity? It didn’t matter, her tamer was suffering and there was nothing she could do about it. Ironically, Cinder realized this made her sad too, not to the same intensity to be sure… but she was sad for him. It wasn’t that long ago he’d been introduced into the digital world, and now he was moving out… his life never seemed to slow down and let him get acclimated.
Maybe they should hold off on the field trip to the digital world… if just to give Basile a break and let him relax. It’d be horribly…selfish of her to drag him out to see the world while he was suffering on the inside. Either way, her tamer needed some reassurance and as much as it galled her, she was going to have to support her partner in this. So much for the ‘Femme Fatale’ angle she’d been going for. She hopped off the bed and walked over. To her annoyance her rookie form wasn’t tall enough to hug him the way she desired. So, she grabbed his hand and pulled him down to her level.
Cinder then hugged him, and muttered ‘Its going to be okay, you’re not alone in this. You have me’ which when muffled by his shirt was unintelligible to Basile. Nevertheless, Basile hugged Cinder back and rubbed the Digimon’s head. It made her squirm and they both knew it would eventually make her laugh. She struggled valiantly, but eventually she failed and started giggling as Basile rubbed her head.
Basile idly smiled down at his giggling partner, getting reassurance and comfort from her. A rare thing from little Cinder, maybe he was being silly… Maybe things would be alright, even if it wasn’t he always had a partner to help him keep going. He had gathered all his belongings, De-digivolved little Cinder and put Sunmon back in his backpack, nestled snugly between his clothing and journal.
He took one last long look at his old room and left the room, moving on, to bigger and better things.
