Train Cars Like Coffins [Eliot/Cassandra]

Cass' his was subtle enough that Elliot meant it, but he could tell that something had changed for the worse here. The warmth around the doctor had retracted somewhat, her focus now focused on escape rather than guidance. As much as he hated to admit it, seeing her facade fall was making him a bit more nervous too. Nevertheless, at least she was still here. As she gave his hand a gentle squeeze he felt himself return it, then cling to her hand as if afraid to let go. Maybe he'd feel embarrassed about it when he was a bit less terrified.
He nodded as Cas suggested a fire extinguisher. "Do you think you'd be able to hold it for me?" Elliot asked. "I mean, I'd be fine with it. But, if I've already got one hand on my walking stick . . ." Somehow, "have this kid hold a heavy object while also meaning I can't keep him close" didn't seem like it'd be on Cas' agenda. It also unfortunately meant that Elliot was kind of useless right now, because if he didn't have both hands full he'd have to give up the full usage of his second leg. He could still go a decent way with it, but his pace would have to dramatically slow. Not a good idea in this situation.
Elliot knew there was another answer, but could he really justify using it? If this was just a few punks, it would have major repercussions.
Although wait. Something didn't seem to match up about Cas' stories here. "So it this metal on the track, or punks?" Elliot asked, a bit of worry creeping into his voice. "You don't think somebody tried trapping a train at this hour, did you?" What was this, an old-style train robbery? Maybe it would be if all of the eyes in the window were horses.
Nevertheless, Elliot's eyes were solidly on the prize, and soon he had spotted the fire extinguisher at the other end of the room. If they grabbed that and went through the next door, there'd only be two cars left before reaching the conductor. It should have been simple. Then again, who knows what could happen in the time it takes to move across a single train car?

"Don't worry our main priority is keeping you mobile. I'll handle the fire extinguisher besides if we're going to use it to bust open a window I'll need both hands to do it." She assured him even as she paused in her steps for a moment giving his hand one last comforting squeeze before Cas transferred his fingers to her belt.
"Here." She added half turning to carefully tuck her scalpels out of sight up her sleeves to allow the blades to lay flat and hidden against her forearms as she turned back once more plucking her penlight from where she'd stuck it in her hair. Taking a step closer towards Eliot she very carefully tucked the little flashlight behind his ear like one might a flower allowing him to illuminate the way and also ensuring if something happened to her he wouldn't be blind in the dark. "There. That a way you can light our path and if I have to use the fire extinguisher I can do so." Cas explained with a wry smile that quickly bled into a frown as Eliot caught onto her discrepancies. Following the boy to the back of the car she pried open the box the red fire extinguisher was in before taking the item in question firmly in her hands as she sighed.
"Honestly I'm not sure what is going on. Could just be an accident. Could be a prank. Could be something more malicious, but we're not going to take our chances ok? If I say run you need to run all right, but it hopefully won't come to anything like that." She spoke deciding it was perhaps best to be frank given the gradually worsening situation. She couldn't be certain after all what would happen as the pair passed into the next car. All Cas could be certain of was that she had her finger looped through the pull pin and hand ready on the trigger of the fire extinguisher if something decided to give them trouble.

Elliot was surprised how empty his hand felt when Cas let go of it. The warmth had distracted him from just how cold the room had become, and he found his teeth chattering a little as the chill finally set in. He kept his hand on her belt carefully, but he was a little baffled that somehow that contact had made all the difference for him. Cas' argument was sound, though, even if it did raise a few other questions. "As long as it doesn't, like, tip anyone off to the fact that we're here, that works for me," Elliot said. It was better than whacking someone in the head over it.
He could've sworn he noticed a glint of silvery metal on Cas' wrist as she started fiddling with her pen light, but the ginger way she nestled it against his hear was certainly a good way of distracting him from asking questions. Unfortunately, the sudden light also meant that Elliot's blush was very plainly visible. He averted his eyes nervously at this fact, as if not wanting to see how Cas would react to noticing. At least now he wouldn't just be dead weight! "I'll do my best," he said, fully prepared to start leading the way.
The walk across the train card had definitely been uneventful, but the fact that Elliot was now lighting the way meant that he was carefully scanning every part of the car for movement. That meant he was paying a lot more attention to his surroundings, and that meant he could see the eyes in the window too. Immediately, he knew whatever they were dealing with wasn't human. Unlike Cas, Elliot knew exactly what they meant. He took in a sharp breath, stifling it within his throat to the best of his ability to avoid tipping Cas off to his worries. Maybe if he had free hands and free space he could've taken out his Digivice to scan them, but in front of someone who had never been to the Digital World? That was way too risky.
Maybe that was why when Cas said to run, he found himself blurting "I'm not running." He quickly realized that it might've sounded a little suspicious, and corrected himself. "It wouldn't be right to leave you alone. Not like this," he added, not letting on to the extra details he knew about the situation.
The third train car was identical to the second train car. There was the same lock of the door as they passed through. There was the same lack of any light, sound, or motion. There were even the same eyes in the inky darkness, looking through the windows. The main difference was that previously, all of the eyes had been outside of the train cars, looking within.
This time, one of the masses of eyes was inside, unmoving and looking directly at Elliot and Cas.

"You wouldn't be leaving me alone Eliot. I'd be right behind you." Cas assured him and while she hoped for such she knew that if push came to shove she'd do her all to buy the kid more time. She just hadn't expected the situation to come up so soon. Meeting the gaze of the many eyed pool of darkness that lurked before them Cas grit her teeth in a show of flashing incisors and determination as she leveled the nozzle of the fire extinguisher at the monster. More of it's kind swarmed outside or perhaps it was just a larger extension of this one creature, Cas couldn't be certain. She only knew as the door clicked closed behind them that there was no running backwards. Their only options were forward or out and out would lead into the jaws of more of the beasts.
"Eliot~" She whispered just soft enough for him to hear from the corner of her mouth. "I'm going to distract it. See if you can get around it to the door and hold the door open for us. I'll dodge around it and follow when I can." Cas spoke quiet and low never taking her eyes off of the creature.
Instead she pulled the pin, the only noise for the moment the soft metallic clank as the piece of metal hit the floor as she stepped forward. "Move." She ordered the digimon her eyes narrowed with vehemence and voice pitched low and dangerous. There was no room for argument in her tone. The Digimon would either move...or they would fight.

Normally, a statement like that would be quite comforting to Elliot. Cas had been more than generous so far, after all, and she was someone Elliot would've loved to spend more time with. Today was the worst possible day for Cas to say that, though. His argument with Isaac was still fresh on his mind, and Cas' words were far, far too similar to his. Elliot found himself shrinking back from her some, hand unhooking from around her belt as he looked down at his feet. "No," he said, shaking his head. "You run first. I can take care of myself, and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you just so I could make it okay. I . . . I'd really want to know if you're okay, please."
He couldn't abandon two people to their fates.
Elliot frowned slightly as Cas gave her request. That thing sitting in front of them was a Digimon, but without his Digital form that was all Elliot knew. He had no idea what it was, or how strong it would be, or if it was even corporeal or not. If he tried to do something, he could just end up sealing his and Cas' fates. For that reason, he was more than happy to follow Cas' lead, sneaking off to try and get to the door. The being's eyes seemed to move in two different directions, some following Elliot and some following Cas, but it didn't seem to react as Elliot peeled away to start making his way to the door. From here Elliot could see that it had eyes spanning the entire length of its body, not just on its "front" side. Did this thing even have a face?
As Elliot pulled out his Digivice, the creature eyed it with idle curiosity. It didn't even react as he started subtly scanning it, keeping one hand on the door and the other on his "phone." Maybe he could explain it to Cas as trying to phone for help, if the need arose. Nevertheless, there he was able to see what he was working with. Shademon. Champion. An incorporeal Digimon made of shadows. Whatever it was, it seemed like bad news.
And, much like Cas requested, it started moving. Towards her. A gap started to spread between its eyes, almost as if Shademon was making a hole inside of its dark void to fit Cas within. If she didn't react it would soon envelop her completely, leaving her completely surrounded by cold, inky darkness.

Cas would have liked to have argued. To have said that Eliot needed the head start more then she did and that of the two of them she was faster. That worse comes to worse he looked light enough to firemans carry if she had too, but it'd be easier if he just did as she said and put distance between himself and whatever she told him to run from. Doctor Cross however, did not have time to argue as the digimon moved it's form splitting like some multi-eyed inky maw and holding Cas's full attention as she took a step back and leveled the nozzle end towards where she thought the creature had the most mass.
"If that's how it's going to be then~" She grit out eyes narrowing in fury. "Then lets dance!" The woman hissed the noise echoing the sudden outburst of air as she pulled the trigger aiming a stream of compressed gas and semi-solid Co2 at the monster hoping the cold, sudden lack of oxygen, and fog would be enough to distract it as she dodged to the side keeping her front to the creature at all times as she circled it and bolted for the door.
"Quick! Get it open and let's get the hell out of here!" Cas called out to Eliot hoping the two could make good their escape before the disorientated monster could come after them.

She was actually doing it. Cas was going out and emptying a fire extinguisher on a champion. A Champion wasn't too unbearable to deal with, by Digimon standards. By this point Elliot had experienced way worse, personally, at the hands of various Ultimates around the Digital World. And those weren't even the strongest! However, Cas wasn't someone who could turn into an angel, or a martial artist dragon shark, or a snake with increasingly implausible fine dexterity skills. She was a human. A human smaller than Elliot, and somewhat frail looking too. She couldn't do this. He couldn't let her. The worry in his voice peaked a little as he desperately shouted after her. "Cas, wait-!"
It was too late, though. Cas' breath and the hiss of pressurized foam went off at once, and the fire extinguisher has come spraying to life.
The Shademon didn't even seem to notice, however. Its eyes all turned to face Cas at once, more opening from almost every corner of the inky black Digimon's body. Some were large, with manic swirls visible instead of pupils. Others were small and numerous, clustered together in small bright spots along its body. However, they all seemed to slip into a half-lidded, almost droopy expression. It was as if the Shademon was less startled by Cas' action and more weary, perhaps even irritable. Nevertheless, for the time being it did not act. It simply watched as Cas ran to Elliot's side, the boy frantically fumbling with the door so he could pull it open by the time Cas arrived.
The Shademon slowly started to recede into the floor as they left, and by the time they had passed the train's next door had locked shut.
The next train car seemed to be completely shrouded in darkness. Elliot wasn't surprised. The light had been getting more strained with each room. What was surprising, however, was the small glimmers of white in the train car. They twinkled as Elliot stared into the depths, almost like little localized stars on a galaxy. Inky blackness and a less harsh blue intermingled with each other, twirling like wisps of cosmic gas.
It should've been a serene image. However, for some reason it left Elliot sick to his stomach. He scooted a bit closer to Cas, unsure whether to stand protectively in front of her or hide behind her. "T-two left," he restated, hoping this train wouldn't be even a single car longer.

The Doctor launched through the open door as fast as her legs would take her spinning around as she crossed the threshold to help Eliot slam it shut behind them even as they heard to lock click into place. Breathing hard from fear and exertion Cas took a moment to double over. Gripping the fire extinguisher lightly in one hand she rested her other on her knee closing her eyes for a moment as she breathed before straightening to blink at the worrying display of stars and darkness that seemed to swirl around them like the pair had entered into a sort of cosmic void.
Feeling a shiver of unease claw it's way up her spine Cas reached out her free arm to wrap it in a loose one armed embrace about Eliot's shoulders. Pulling the nervous kid who had edged even closer to her in his fear against her side for the moment the pair stood observing the path that lay ahead of them. "It's going to be ok." Cas murmured glancing up at the gangly young teen with a small reassuring smile she didn't feel.
"I don't know about you, but I say we hit up a twenty-four hour convenience store after this and buy the biggest pints of icecream and soda we can and grab a bench somewhere and kill ourselves with sugar shock. I figure we'll have earned it after all this." She joked lightly giving the boy a light playful nudge before she slowly released him. Taking a few brave tentative steps forward into the dark Cas chose to lead the way leaving Eliot to light the path over her shoulder as she hefted the fire extinguisher once more at the ready.
"It'll be my treat." Cas offered with a chuckle and a grin that didn't quite match the wild wariness of her eyes or the way her blue orbs seemed to cut like frozen glass across the expanse of night before them ready to pin any threat beneath the weight of her glare.

Elliot smiled softly as he felt Cas' arm wrap around his shoulders. Frankly, with the difference in height between them meaning she had to likely put a lot of effort into the gesture, he wasn't fighting it. He even stooped down a little to make it easier for her, warmly nestling a bit into her side. "Thank you," he said, voice still quiet. There was something disconcerting about the long road ahead, but the small smile on her face was enough to settle the pit inside of his stomach. Granted, the fact that she was actually pretty cute helped.
Elliot giggled a little at her offer, one last attempt made at cheering him up. "That actually sounds really nice," he admitted. "Mom'd probably get worried if I had too much of it, though. I've already been worrying her a lot lately, so maybe I should try and go easy . . ." She was taking the whole Digital World thing way more in stride than Elliot had expected, but he could tell there was a lot of worry hidden behind her outward acceptance. Elliot knew it wouldn't be a good idea to push the issue there too much.
Still, her treat? Elliot frowned slightly. "You've been doing a lot for me. I'd feel bad," he said. "If anything, I should be treating you for all of this. I mean, it isn't like you had to escort me through the nightmare-train or anything like that." Nevertheless, they could talk who treated who later. For now, Elliot needed to light the way, because Cas was taking point in the darkness. He angled his flashlight towards the darkness, but damn near dropped it when he realized just what he was looking at.
The blackish-blue darkness natural to this time of night was gone, leaving behind the inky black forms of several Shademon. They seemed to have coagulated together in a large pile, their shadowy bodies forming a single entity of darkness that spread from wall to wall. The "stars", their eyes, all swiveled to focus on Cas and Elliot as they made their way into the darkness. Strangely enough, the mass started to separate. It was almost as if they were parting to get out of Cas and Elliot's way, or at least trying to make individual observations of their own.
The gesture wasn't all altruistic, though. Tendrils of darkness seemed to stretch from a few of the Shademon, each one almost supernaturally chill to the touch. They seemed to probe the area around Cas and Elliot, perhaps even listlessly swinging towards the duo. Elliot kept his profile as small as possible, as if terrified of the mere idea touching him. The sounds of distress coming from this throat were evident.

"You're right we'll discuss it later." Cas assured him even as she paced steadily into the darkness. While she held herself together surprisingly well once it clicked in just what she was looking at she couldn't stop a shudder of revulsion from inching it's way up the woman's spine. Still she gritted her teeth baring them in a feral smile and walked spine straight chin up as if to imply the Shademon were to get out of her way for a damn good reason.
A reason she was quick to prove as a few probing tendrils of darkness came a bit to close for her liking the small noise of distress that rose from Eliots throat ripping a deep almost inhumanely feral snarl of rage from Cas's own chest as she whirled flicking the trigger of the fire extinguisher as fast as one could blink as she blanketed one of the reaching shadows in freezing compressed CO2.
"Don't you fucking touch him!" She hissed out between clenched teeth making it a point to keep Eliot close as she waved her improvised weapon threateningly rage rolling off her in waves as she looked to cut a swath through the inky blackness to the door intending to wrench it open with or without a fight if the Shademon pressed her. They would find however, that Cassandra was always her most dangerous when cornered.

The CO2 went off in great white plumes, only to be swallowed in the darkness like light spilling into a black hole. Her guttural snarling and roaring could barely be heard over the press of the high-pressure foam, and Elliot found it hard to see from either blinding white foam or endless depths of blackness surrounding him on other side. Nevertheless, it seemed whatever Cas was doing was working, because the Shademon were receding ever so slightly.
Was this a victory, though, or a retreat on their own terms? They never left fully, only remaining close enough to continue observing Cas. In fact, they seemed rather enamored with the woman, to the point of completely ignoring the scared boy hobbling behind her. A tendril reached between the two, Elliot recoiling from the icy cold and letting out another little yelp. It didn't separate Elliot form Cas, but rather made a small gap between the two so Shademon could rush in and fill the remaining space. They now gathered to watch Cas up close, tentacles probing the air around her and eyes practically swimming across their bodies to get better looks at her.
Elliot fumbled for his Digivice, but he was having an awful time finding it. Instead he just shakily demanded "Get away from her! Please!" He even took a swing at one with his walking stick, although much to the Shademon's clear amusement it phased right through.
The Shademon would continue crowding around Cas, but the duo's approach would never be blocked outright. However, each step would be harder than the last, as if the shadows mobbing around Elliot and Cas were starting to physically weigh them down. The shape of the door could be faintly visible through the thick clouds of Shademon, but it was little more than an outline. How much time would it take to fumble for an opening at this rate?

Despite the Shademon's crowding Cas refused to be separated from Elliot. Even going so far as to slow or circle back around to the boy lashing out with the fire extinguisher anytime one of the insubstantial Digimon got too close for comfort. Righteous fury was bright in her brilliant blue eyes, but the going was slow if not steady. The outline of the door becoming gradually clear until Cas shifted the extinguisher to one hand to reach out to grasp the handle trying to pull the door open with all her might as the metal hinges creaked.
"Not. Much. Farther. Now." She breathed out through teeth gritted in effort, her jaw set in a stubborn line as she fought to make them an exit. If the door didn't move soon then she fully intended to take the heavy end of the extinguisher to the window. It was a small window, but if she broke out all the glass it was likely she and Elliot could shimmie through. Yet at the last second the metal finally gave with an awful screech sending Cas stumbling forward as she tried to find her footing once more in the darkness.

Elliot and Cas' combined lashing failed to do anything to the Shademon, but they certainly communicated to keep their distance. One by one the the Shademon started to peel away, phasing through the floors and windows as they started leaving the train en masse. Elliot let out a deep sigh as he finally had breathing room, no longer needing to deal with several shadows pushed right up against his face. "Come on, come on, we're almost there!" Elliot said, hustling his pace forward to try and meet Cas' as she flung herself at the doors.
He almost fell down as she stumbled through the door, quickly bracing himself against her shoulder that he wouldn't fall. When he opened his eyes again after composing himself, his jaw dropped as he realized that he was seeing light. It wasn't a very comforting light. The lights had been torn from their holsters, dangling on the wires that faintly connected them to the rest of the train. They swayed back and forth as if being pushed by a stiff breeze, the lightbulbs blinking frantically like a strobe on repeat.
The lights weren't the only thing swaying. The train itself seemed to be rocking back and forth, Elliot digging his heels in and taking small, careful footsteps in order to avoid being flung around like a little pinball. Usually it didn't sway for too much of an angle, reaching about 10 degrees at most. However, on occasion the train nearly tipped a full thirty degrees, as if something outside was trying to tip it over on its side.
All the while, the conductor spoke.
"Terrible. Terrible. You must stop," it said, the static creeping into its voice all the more overwhelming. "Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop." With each new "stop" the walls of the train vibrated, as if it was being smashed and pounded on all sides by something trying to get in. Elliot just squeezed his eyes shut, holding his walking stick tight in one hand and clinging to Cas' hand with the other.
Just one more car, right?

Splaying her feet wide the Doctor managed to hold her balance for a couple of cautious steps her eyes wide in the dim flickering light and teeth gritted with a feral snarl. "F&$#!" She cussed going sideways as the car tilted hard slamming her into the side of the wall at the apex of it's shift as she turned trying to splay herself wide against the wall reaching out to catch Elliot if he lost his footing as well.
"Almost there. We're almost there." Cas muttered repeating Elliots own words as they made slow progress across the shifting car. "And we're sure as hell not stopping." She snapped out her grip on the fire extinguisher nearly bruise in her white knuckle hold as she glared up at the sputtering speakers as the pair inched towards the door. Cassandra was exhausted, bruised, and a livewire of survival instincts and adrenaline, but she couldn't stop. Not so long as Elliot was there depending on her. Perhaps she wasn't the best person in the world, but she sure as heck wasn't going to leave a child to whatever digital wraiths these things were.

Elliot tried his best to throw himself in Cas' path like a tiny little human shield, but unfortunately the sudden shuddering of the train left him overshooting. Cas was left hitting the wall hard, while the doctor was barely able to catch Elliot in time to make sure he didn't end up eating metal floor again. Immediately he whipped his head over to Cas, asking "Are you okay? Did that hurt?" in a worried tone.
It didn't hurt enough to slow Cas, that was for sure. She pressed on, clutching her shoulder while death-glaring the darkness with an almost terrifying intensity. Elliot made sure to keep behind her, constantly fumbling with the Digivice in his bag. Use it or not? If he used it, maybe he could stop the Shademon that were presumably trying to tear this train to pieces. However, he'd also risk exposing any innocents on the train to the secret of the Digital World as well. Cas could still always go home and sleep this off as a fever dream, and the train's conductor probably wouldn't be nearly as understanding as she was. It didn't help that MagnaAngemon was most certainly not a form built for fighting, and all of Elliot's other forms were currently indisposed.
He didn't have time to think further. Cas had wrenched open the last cabin door, taking the duo out of the normal bounds of a subway train and into the conductor's quarters. It was much like any of the other train's cars, considering this wasn't a one-man driver operation, but that didn't stop an eerie feeling from settling over the room when Elliot entered. For starters, it was completely empty. The usual debris and masses of Shademon that Elliot and Cas had walked past were nowhere to be seen. In fact, the room was almost immaculately neat. There was not a single crack on the windows or speck of dust on the floor, and the jittery lighting that was in every other room was replaced with a dim, steady glow.
The room had only one occupant, the conductor. He rose from his seat, not facing nor even acknowledging Cas or Elliot. If anything, it looked like he was about to start stretching, as if doing morning exercises. The motions were far from natural and flexible, however. They were almost like a marionette being pulled on its strings, taking on a rigidness that was anathema to exercise.
Hesitantly, Elliot walked over to the conductor. "Excuse me?" he asked. "Do you know why the train stopped?" The conductor seemed to perk up upon hearing Elliot speak, but he didn't turn to acknowledge Elliot's presence. He just kept on with his exercises.
That is, of course, until Elliot was close enough behind him. Then he stuck an arm out and wheeled around, as if he was being spun around by some kind of supernatural force. Elliot was backhanded hard, sending him sprawling to the ground, his Digivice on one end of the room, and his walking stick on the other. The conductor, seemingly not troubled by this, resumed his exercises in peace.
