This is an Armor Hunt thread that I'm doing solo.
Skye wasn't sure how she had managed to escape the realm of the Dark Area, but, it certainly was a journey to remember. There she had met and befriended two little brothers - a Tsukaimon and Pagumon called Willis and Domon, and there she had helped them out and had... rather the best time of her life, well, outside of Luminas anyway.
There she had also met another digimon, a funny little Chuumon named Hickory that wanted nothing more than to leave the Dark Area. He wasn't like the other digimon there - in that he dressed in dapper clothes and was also kind and good natured. Too easy as prey there in such a place. And so Skye had agreed to let him follow her around in their journeys through the digital world.
"Man, hanging out with you gives me a whole new perspective on life, Skye" Hickory said, who was, as usual for them now, riding on her shoulder. "In that I can actually look down on some things now!" he snickered at the silly little joke he had made.
"You're only about two feet higher off the ground, it's not much of a change" Skye replied, smirking.
"Well, ya have to take every inch you can get when you're my size" Hickory answered. Somewhere in the distance an Impmon could be heard saying "giggity".
Today the two were journeying through to visit the Village of Beginnings. They had heard that it was quite pleasant there, and the two of them were kind of curious about the place where all the babies of the main digital world continent were born.
"Huh, kinda profound when ya think about it" Hickory remarked as they could see the bright coloured giant toys through the trees now. "Two digimon, born in heaven and hell, going to see where all the rest came from. Kinda like poetry, eh?"
"Yeah, don't quit your day job, Hickory" Skye said, blankly.
"Hey, my day job's entertaining you ain't it?" Hickory teased.
"Feel free to start any time" Skye joked, but she was only messing around. She'd grown rather fond of this little rodent digimon. When the two of them approached the Village, they were stopped by a rather stern looking old Elecmon.
"You two, what's your business here?" he asked in an interrogative tone. Skye was a bit shocked at such a cold greeting, but supposed there was a good reason behind it.
"We'd just like to visit if we can" Skye answered.
"Why? Do you know someone who was destroyed recently?" the Elecmon asked. Skye was initially going to answer no, but instead, Hickory spoke.
"Yeah, I do" he said. Skye glanced at him with curiosity, the Chuumon wasn't smiling. In fact she had never seen his silly face look like that before, he looked rather sad. Perhaps she could ask him about it later?
The Elecmon showed sympathy. "Alright... you're free to enter. If you see something wrong, let me or Swanmon know right away". And with that, he let them be.
"Hickory, is that true?" Skye asked her companion.
"Please... I don't wanna talk about it" he answered. With that, Skye let him be for now.
Cautious at first, the two digimon entered the Village, and were shortly after being followed by an increasing group of bouncing little digimon.
"Aw, how cute!" Skye said, beaming at the sight of them. Such lovely little innocent creatures. Kyaromon, Wanyamon, Tsunomon, Koromon, Pagumon, Kapurimon, they seemed curious to get such a visitor. "Hi there, kids, what's going on?"
"Aw..." one of the digimon said. "We thought you were someone we know".
"Someone you know?" Skye repeated. "Did you all know a Gatomon?" It seemed that somehow or another they all had. Mostly in a kind of motherly role when Skye inquired further. Well, that kinda did fall in line with logic - Gatomons were naturally quite gentle and caring digimon that would have taken younger digimon into their care. In fact that was the life that they wanted to impose on her in Luminas, which was one of the reasons she left that floating city.
"Did any of you know a Chuumon?" Hickory asked, jumping down from Skye's shoulder and looked a little smug, posing in his little outfit.
"Umm... I think I saw one down a toilet once" a Motimon said, looking awkward as he tried to remember. "Was that you?"
Hickory was outraged at the very notion of that. "No I do NOT hang around in toilets!" he snapped, stomping on the grass.
"Easy there, Hickory, they're just kids" Skye said, snickering at the sight. Hickory quickly regained his composure.
"Besides, I don't think you'd ever see a Chuumon as well groomed and civilized as me" Hickory declared, sticking his nose in the air. As he was doing this he failed to notice the Tokomon sneaking up behind him, then all at once, he felt a sharp pain on his tail.
"AAAGH! LET GO!" he yelled, running around, trying to shake the in-training menace from his tail. The other baby digimon giggled. Tokomon only relented when Skye stopped him and prised his jaws open, Hickory held his poor tail as he would a poor vulnerable child, trying not to sob.
It was then that Skye noticed something approaching from the trees nearby. Skye's sharp eyes detected that there seemed to be a digimon there. A digimon no bigger than a rookie. It had brown and tan fur, big green eyes and long ears.
"Oh? Who's that digimon there? Do they work with Elecmon and Swanmon?" Skye asked, pointing. The babies turned to see what it was, and Skye was surprised to see them react with disliked.
"Oh, that's Meicoomon, she's been kinda weird ever since she evolved, so we don't like having her around" Koromon stated, frankly. "I don't know why she doesn't just go away already, you're meant to leave the village once you reach Rookie".
"Come on, that's mean, maybe she still wants to be friends?" Skye suggested. "Did you even say goodbye to her when she evolved?" She took the little digimons' awkward silence as a negative. Well then, that just won't do. "Meicoomon! Come over here, don't be shy!"
Slowly, the mammal digimon revealed herself, then approached cautiously. Skye smiled pleasantly at her. "Hello there. What were you doing all the way out there?"
"Want... to play" Meicoomon murmured in an odd tone. Skye was a little confused at this simple answer.
"You want to play with your old friends one last time? Is that right?" Skye asked. Meicoomon glanced at Hickory with a curious expression, making the Chuumon decide to get back on Skye's shoulder again, he didn't want her biting on his tail.
To this question, the Meicoomon hesitated, then nodded. Skye could understand completely. Sometimes evolutions happened a little too quickly, leaving a young digimon with the mind of an in-training in a rookie's body, unable to adjust to the world outside very well. She was only lucky she knew what she did when she evolved from Nyaromon to Gatomon, else she wouldn't have had a chance on the streets of Luminas or Fragment Village in the Dark Area.
"Now then, kids, what do you want to play?" Skye asked the baby digimon. "Hide and seek? Tag? That's fun isn't it?"
"Yeah, we could play tag" a Pinamon said, overcoming the hesitation. The other digimon seemed to warm to the idea as this was said, making Meicoomon beam with delight.
"Okay then, let's play tag!" Skye said. The prospect of the game seemed to delight the digimon. "I'm it..." Skye said as the babies jumped away from her, then she prodded Hickory in the belly. "Now Hickory's it"
"Hey! No fair! I wasn't ready!" Hickory complained. He responded by prodding her back, but Skye shook her head.
"Ah ah, can't tag the tagger" she said. Grumbling, but not wanting to spoil things, Hickory joined in the game, and was fast enough to catch a Dorimon, who in turn tagged a Kapurimon by nipping his tail.
"Hey! No biting!" Skye called, but that was easier said than done. The Kapurimon tagged a Yokomon, which bumped into a Tanemon, who tagged a Viximon, who then caught up to Meicoomon, who was delighted.
That was when everything went wrong. Meicoomon happily chased after the others, enjoying the game very much, then turned her eyes toward the Pinamon that had spoken up earlier. She sped up as she approached, running on all fours, before finally tackling him with a flurry of feathers.
"You're... Hurting... Me!" he yelled, squeaking in distress. Skye yelled and rushed to the scene, also on all fours.
"Meicoomon! Let go!" Skye shouted. Pinamon then connected his electric feathers with Meicoomon, delivering an electric shock, which hurt her.
Then, Meicoomon responding by biting down hard on Pinamon's head. He made one last terrified scream before the in-training level disintegrated into data. Skye watched with horror. As did the rest of the babies, who screamed and ran away.
"Meicoomon... why?" Skye asked. Meicoomon seemed to be fascinated by the sight of the floating data, a hungry look in her eyes. "Meicoomon, answer me!" she shouted, marching up to her and trying to fix her attention. "He was a smaller digimon than you, why did you destroy him?!"
To Skye's horror, Meicoomon seemed to be trying to reach out to the data above her, making hungry noises. It was then that Skye realized that all sentience seemed to have been lost from this digimon. Only instinct remained. And... she was trying to absorb the data.
"You... don't even understand what you're doing do you?" Skye stated, softly. Meicoomon attempted to wrench herself free, but Skye held firm. Meicoomon then responded by biting Skye hard on the arm.
"Meicoomon, stop it!!" Skye shouted, pushing her away, standing between her and the remains of the Pinamon. Meicoomon seemed determined to consume, and made one last jump at it.
"I said STOP IT!!!!" Skye screamed, and before she could stop herself, lunged forward. She had only meant to push Meicoomon back, but then she realized with horror what she had done. Her claws weren't spread out flat for a push, but instead, were closed, the claws pointing forward like a spear. And she realized now with the force of her attack, she had penetrated deep.
Data poured out of the Meicoomon's chest, dancing away in the sunlight. Skye's face was the personification of horror as she realized what she had done.
"No... no! I'm sorry!" she cried, her tail ring glowing. "Life Weaver!" she cried, desperately trying to use her healing technique to close the wound, but she had struck too deeply for that. Tears ran down her face as she realized that this seemed like a mistake that she couldn't fix. "LIFE WEAVER!!!" she screamed out of desperation, but Meicoomon fell limp, landing on the grass as her body slowly disintegrated. With her last ounce of strength, she slowly turned her face to Skye, a look of confusion in her eyes.
"Not... friend?" she asked, and then she was no more. Skye simply fell to her knees, stunned. What had she done? She looked at her paws, realizing that she had killed with them, for the first time in her life. She had never wanted to kill another digimon, not when she had so much other ways to help those around her.
Hickory had observed this scene frozen with shock from the moment the Meicoomon had destroyed the Pinamon. He could do nothing as Skye had tried to desperately keep her from absorbing him, only to destroy her in turn. He had not expected to witness such horrors here so suddenly. and now that it was over... it was like the world had stopped.
Eventually, his legs managed to move again and he approached the Gatomon, who was silently weeping for the horror she had just caused. He reached up, gently patting her arm. Skye didn't react, other than twitch from reflex.
"You did the right thing, Skye" Hickory said, gently.
"...how is this right?" Skye asked, sounding as though all life had left her. "How is killing right?"
"You killed to protect the innocent" Hickory stated. "You tried everything not to, but... it was the only thing you could do from stop her absorbing Pinamon". He looked at the clouds of data in front of them, gently fading away into the afternoon breeze. "Now, both of them will come back... one day".
Skye supposed this was the truth of things. She could have done nothing to stop Meicoomon and Pinamon's game turn fatal, but, she had stopped it from becoming final. She mulled this over in her mind, wondering how she could have lost control like that. She had always tried to be logical and methodical and not lose her composure, but now... she had acted through instinct and not through purpose. Just... what was this feeling? And why was it so familiar to her?
The Gatomon had felt like she had done something like this before - forced to take any measures necessary to protect the innocent. Sometimes her decisions had been brutal; at other times, had caused more harm than good. But she had done them all for a cause. One forgotten to time? No... how could one forget the cause of duty to protect the weak? Shadows crossed through her mind; of other digimon that fought at her side - of good times, and bad. She remembered a Hawkmon vaguely, a Hagurumon, a Honeybeemon and a BlackGatomon... and a Gaomon.
She remained silent for some time as she thought of the reasons why. As the minutes ticked past, other baby digimon approached, all of them looking very shaken. Then Elecmon approached, asking why there was the data of two fallen digimon in the air. Hickory explained all that had happened, while Skye remained silent. His story was believed and the Elecmon sighed, shaking his head.
"This has been going on too much" he said. "You there, Gatomon... thank you for saving Pinamon's data. They should be back as eggs by tomorrow... clean destructions in the village itself are usually quick to mend. But if Meicoomon absorbed him..." he let the words remain unsaid. Pinamon would have never lived again.
Skye jerked at being called "Gatomon". For some reason she wanted to correct him with saying 'That's Lieutenant Gatomon', but halted herself. Instead, she responded with a soft "...you're welcome".
Realizing that it would likely be pointless to linger here for the time being, she climbed back to her feet, leaning down to let Hickory climb up onto her shoulder, which he did, also still in a subdued, careful silence, remaining very still on her shoulder.
"We should probably leave" she told the Elecmon. "I'm sorry that this happened..." she said, and thought that she would do so again if she needed to.
Before Elecmon could respond with a farewell, there was a commotion as the ground in front of Skye glowed with a shining blue light. At once, a flower seemed to bloom before their very eyes, rising from the grass, until it opened, revealing a strange round white object covered in blue crystalline patterns.
"What's that?" Hickory asked, leaning forward to take a closer look. Skye carefully knelt down, touching it. Elecmon didn't object, and so she held it in her paws and lifted it.
"A digimental..." Skye said. What was one doing in the Village of Beginnings though? Well... she remembered from her lessons in Luminas that these things do have a way of finding those that own them. She then gasped as she heard something whisper in her ear.
'Sorry... Skye... I'll be good... next time'
"Hickory?" Skye asked, looking at the Chuumon, who only blinked back with his mismatched eyes. If that wasn't him, who was it? Skye probably was hearing things, she would probably need a long rest to recover from today.
And so when Elecmon said she was fine to take the digimental and bade farewell, Skye and Hickory made their way out of the village, continuing on their journeys around the digital world - both having learned stark lessons, unearthed long forgotten memories, and, perhaps, were filled with a purpose.
They couldn't rely on humans to protect the world all the time, sometimes, they had to take matters into their own hands, for the greater good.
