It was a very quiet walk home from work today, which... well, Haru could genuinely appreciate after all the shit she had been through as of recently. Not even just stuff that has happened in the Digital World... her pay got cut some at the local grocer she had a side job in, almost got run over by some drunk asshole, and a pigeon crapped on her shoulder. Just about everything that COULD have gone wrong had done so today.
The worst part was definitely just that feeling of loneliness... even though usually she never had Tawna come out of her D-Arc in the daytime, it still felt like she not ever alone... that she had at least someone watching her back at all times. Unfortunately now, that wasn't the case. It has been a good twenty-four hours or so since she got back to the human world, though Tawna decided to stay behind to watch that one Meicoomon back in the Village of Beginnings.
Even now, Haru had a lot of bitterness directed towards her partner's decision to spare and help the feline Digimon change their life... While she knew Tawna was doing what they felt was right (a positive change in a way compared to the passive-aggressive cat she used to know), she didn't approve of that creature's actions... She still vividly remembered that poor Nyaromon's dying eyes and gasps before having their life snuffed out for good.
And she didn't do a single thing about it. Neither of them did. Because of her own cowardice, someone was dead.
Haru shook her head as she opened up the door to her apartment, closing it shut and locking it... promptly hurling herself onto her living room couch with an utterly exhausted sigh.

Ah, just another cloudy day in the human world.
From his several nights he had stayed over at Haru's roommate, Dr. Mikemon had gotten the rhythm down for making his way through the apartment: one pass over a quiet street, and then it was just a matter of travelling through the trees, slipping over a rooftop or two before he would make his way down the outside of a gutter, right in front of Haru's front door.
Up to now, all Mikemon knew was about the Arkadimon incident - and even then, his knowledge of the situation was completely through passing knowledge. He had kicked himself for that, for not being able to come over with the rest of the group... but it seemed that Haru understood. Their last conversation, after all, was through a PM in the line chat, stating that he'd be around to check Tawna's data, and to stay clear of the mission guild.
As it was, the cat didn't think much as he reached up to open the door to Haru's apartment - only to find it locked? "... Still at work?" Knowing Haru usually left it unlocked for Tawna, the cat gave a sigh, slipping his cloak over his arm, drawing a key from his glove to his hand. Shortly, the door swung open, revealing Haru collapsed right on the couch in the living room.
"Long day?" Mikemon's tone was casual, closing the door behind him with a foot, clicking the lock in place himself. He'd done this a few times, slipping his cloak over the back of the chair - but at a second glance, the tamer seemed way more off than she usually did.
It was enough to make him ask: "... Haru?"

Haru wasn't even sure if she had the energy to cry, even if she wanted to... She was just that physically and mentally exhausted. She rolled around in the couch some anxiously, rolling onto her back as she gazed up at her ceiling, sighing.
It was only with her door being unlocked did Haru's funk slightly waver, a slight look of shock popping up on her face... though quickly fading away just to see Mikemon. She shook her head slightly, laying it back down on a pillow on the couch. "S-sorry. I still forget that I should least unlock door for ya." she spoke, trying to at least sound not too bothered... but damn it, now that she was home she was just kinda wallowing to herself.
"... Its been better, thats for sure. Pay cut. Almost got run over by a card. Bird crap." the girl somewhat sadly mused. Of course Mikemon would notice her acting all slumpy... he was an extremely-keen guy (even if short). Then again with the way she was just kinda moping, it wasn't terribly hard to piece out her mood right now beyond it being a mix of irritation and general pessimism, it clear she was upset about something far more than just what she was saying. Her mind was just far too occupied with Tawna, she unable to think quite straight.
Tawna... Wait...? Haru's eyes widened slightly as she remembered their last lil' conversation digitally, realizing that she kinda needed Tawna here right now. He was supposed to do a check up on her, right? He seemed pretty concerned about absorbing an Arkadimon, which was probably not the best way of going about things.
Well crap.
She sat up, taking off the helmet she wore and placing it by the table, rubbing her frazzled hair slightly. "... Tawna's kinda out of the house right now." she began to speak, pausing as she debated what to say... an actual rarity for her considering she tended to be the person who let her mouth do the thinking. "She's at the Digital World."

Sheesh, Haru looked absolutely wiped out! The door itself was a bit of a surprise ("Don't worry about that, though I didn't mean to scare ya' walking in,") but as the tamer finally gave her reason, the cat understood:
Pay cut. Bad luck. Bird poop on her shoulder. It seemed that every little bit of today was completely against Haru, though, yes, the funk she had seemed to go a little deeper than that. Her tone, after all, spoke more tiredly about these things than anything else. Still, Mikemon shook his head: "That sucks... if you need to talk, I'm here. Otherwise I'll just stay out of your hair."
That could have been the end of it. Mikemon even gave a few steps towards his room, until Haru perked up about something else - right, Tawna wasn't here, either! The cat's ear gave a flick as the helmet moved off her head, and she explained just where the cat was. No, she wasn't chasing down another snack truck, but she was on her own. In the Digital World.
... Right. With a nod, the cat slipped up to that couch, sitting a few feet away from the tamer. "What happened, then? Falling out, needed a bit of space?" With Tawna in particular, both of these seemed possible - but Haru seemed too sad, rather than angry or frustrated, for it to be something like that.
The cat's tone was clear, that he didn't believe his own guesses.

Despite her mopey personality right now, Haru was actually more than happy to have someone to talk to. It felt so weird not even having someone like Tawna to chat with... Was it rude to think of Mikemon as a replacement goldfish right now? Maybe not... Nonetheless, she appreciated the offer greatly. "It's no prob, I'm just being kind of a jerk right now." she ended up responding, weakly smiling.
"Its mainly just personal space... Tawna asked it specifically." Haru ended up answering his question about Tawna, admittingly looking a bit uncomfortable about the idea of she and Tawna just... abandoning eachother for good. They... they were still friends, but they needed time to sort this stuff out on their own.
She was not sure though if she could figure this all out herself on her own though... In the end, she needed someone to talk to this whole situation between her and Tawna, though she had to make sure that she was talking to someone she could trust to. Mikemon seemed like a good third-party overall, being likely the smartest member in the Field Club beyond maybe Ayumi. "Hey, so... Mikemon? You... you won't judge me if I told you something really important, right?" she ended up asking, scratching her forehead slightly as she glanced at the feline Digimon, an unsure look on her face. "... Like, this is something kinda serious because I feel so lost right now. I don't think I could really trust anyone else right except... well, I guess just another Digimon."
The girl took a deep breath, exhaling as she tried to clear her head. "We... kinda got banned from the Village of Beginnings. That village."

Well, there was at least a bit of good news: it seemed that Tawna and Haru were still on good terms. It was, in fact, a little surprising that the Meicoomon had organized this temporary break-up, but a bit of space was good for any relationship, at least from time to time. "Alright, so long as you two have a handle on it." He was concerned, but at this point, he didn't want to step past his bounds. Just asking about it wouldn't help, but as the cat sat...
... Well, she said something. She was asking him not to judge her? He tilted his head a bit curiously at the request, but as she spoke, the pieces start to fell together. Right, there had to be a reason Tawna was away right now, and Haru definitely sounded like she was begging for help - or at the very least, for someone to talk to about all this! "Of course I won't - doctor's honor." His expression seemed serious for a moment, before he managed a smile: "And of course, as a friend. What's up?"
After all, what was so heavy that she had to confide in him for it? The cat waited, watching Haru try and steady her words - and then the bomb dropped. The cat's ear twitched visibly at her sentence. Tawna and Haru had... gotten banned from The Village of Beginnings? It was clear that the Mikemon was missing the middle, beginning, and end of this story. So, with a calm sigh, he spoke:
"Haru, we're friends - I know there's more to it than that. Tell me what happened." Carefully, he would reach a hand forward, to place his paw over her hand. "Trust me, not a word of this is going to leave this room."

Somehow, Haru knew she could kinda count on Mikemon... Sure they were just roomies, but they were also friends... right? "Thanks Mikey, I... I really just need someone who would understand." she smiled slightly, flipping her hand around to shake the glove of the calico cat Digimon. He seemed pretty quick to grasp that there was more to all this, though clearly it seemed the idea of being banned from probably the nicest place in the Digital World was a bit shocking. "I don't think I could tell the truth to the others at the moment... I know Yukiko is going to be heartbroken to hear I won't be able to tag along for a lil' baby-scanning and Village research later, but I hope maybe someday I can say why... Just not now." she ended up musing, briefly taking another breath to clear her thoughts.
And boy did she have a lot of them.
"We were just interacting with some of the babies, but a Digimon had snuck into the village and... well, killed and ate a Nyaromon." she began to speak, her tone growing mellow at the mention of the killing. Frankly, it still disturbed the hell out of her just thinking about it... seeing that harmless creature turn to data and absorbed twisted her guts internally. She understood that Digimon often times had to fight, and some felt the need to absorb a mon entirely (most of the time selfishly, though she knew Tawna had a reason last time back down in Old Terminus), denying the chance at rebirth entirely... but that wasn't even a fight. That was a Champion level murdering in cold-blood a Digimon who wasn't even Rookie. Of course, that was only the tip of the iceberg... she prepping up what was probably the most important detail she felt.
"That Digimon was a Meicoomon. Like Tawna."
It... wasn't exactly fun to see something as small and cute as a Meicoomon turn out to be a murderer. She knew even cute Digimon could be dangerous, but there was just such a huge whiplash between its cute appearance and the deed it had done that it left Haru absolutely confused. Not to mention its mannerisms. "... Thing is, they didn't act evil. Hell, they tried to play with Tawna cause she was just another Meicoomon. They just seemed... I dunno, like a kid?" she ended up adding on, not terribly sure herself what to think. "Its weird... Its like, its fucked up what they did, but they also didn't really seem to understand the full extent of their actions... The only person they seemed to acknowledge as... well, a person was Tawna."

As far as confiding in someone in the Field Club, Haru had made a good choice. Though he liked the group, Mikemon honestly didn't think Miyu nor Dio as the type of people who kept secrets that well - and as for Yukiko, well, such a thought might shatter their poor leader's heart. Speaking of the disappointment, the cat gave a nod. "Push comes to shove, I could just say you're helping me with a project." He gave a nod, slowly pulling away his hand as Haru gathered her thoughts.
And boy. Boy oh boy, did the cat not want things to fall the way they did. Tawna and Haru were just visiting the Village of Beginnings, and happened to stumble upon another Digimon - one who had managed to sneak its way inside. The tamer's expression was understandably sorrowful, but hearing that she had more to say, the cat did not speak. Rather, he simply rested his hand on her's again, a sad tone in the Mikemon's own eyes. She'd had to witness something so terrible...
... From another Meicoomon. With that contact, Haru would very easily feel the cat's hand flinch inside her's, at that very declaration. Mikemon's expression didn't seem quite shocked, but simply surprised to hear that - and as she kept on, explaining how that it simply acted natural, like another Meicoomon, the Doctor visibly winced.
Tawna was the only one who understood what the Meicoomon was going through. And Mikemon wasn't surprised.
"Haru... I... I'm sorry." The Mikemon sighed, slowly reaching away, pulling something out of his glove. He soon held an older-looking piece of paper, holding the mark of the mission guild - the very document he'd promised to share with Tawna and Haru when he came over. (X) The tone upon it was quite clear - particularly in the fourth paragraph:
Yes, Meicoomon. An uncommon species, they are generally known for their resistance to corruption as well as their ability to consume and absorb large amounts of data. Left unchecked, a Meicoomon can easily run the gamut from Champion through Mega in the course of a week, and leave entire villages behind as a ghost town. The cat shook his head, not even making eye contact with Haru at this point.

Honestly, Haru couldn't blame Mikemon for being somewhat perturbed it seemed at the mentioning of the culprit's species. After all, who would have thought that a small cat Digimon could have been that... brutal? Tawna may have been prickly, but she'd have never resorted to eating babies! It was only about then that she was handed the paper, causing her to briefly go silent... he apologizing to her. Sure enough, she began reading... for least three minutes.
No, he wasn't flinching because the species seemed innocuous and unfitting to its actions. He was flinching because he knew that was exactly what was expected.
It was the exact other way around.
Haru could not help but cup her mouth, her eyes turning into a look of fear. Each time she read the statement, the worse it felt just looking at it. She half-expected even for the text to change to talk about a completely different species or something, but to no avail. No, it was clear as to what Digimon it was speaking to about... and the details about said Digimon were horrific. The fact about they being data guzzling machines, the mentions about emptying villages into ghost towns... the fact they were so desperate that they willing to call for outside help and DESTROY the area?
And they were talking about Meicoomons... the same species her partner and best friend was. This entire time, Haru learned that she was living with a Digimon that is thought to be "a threat to all around it".
Her face recoiled in disgust, her eyes growing wet as she refused to believe what she was reading. It made so much sense, but opened up so much horror to think about. What would have happened if that Meicoomon was allowed to do whatever it wished freely...? Would the Village have been emptied out? What about Tawna...? What would have happened if Tawna had not changed to become a better person.
Better question... what did her partner do before meeting her?
She shook her head in disbelief, shoving the paper off to the side as she attempted to wipe her face off. "H-How long did you know...?"

In retrospect, this was definitely not the best time to hand Haru such a critical piece of information.
After all, the tamer had already been at an emotional edge. Everything that had happened since she had met that other Meicoomon had been stacked against her, and she'd likely been left confused as to why any of this had been going on. How could the cute cat act in such cruel and destructive manner so casually? Why had Tawna been so desperate to try and save someone who had done something that was quite unforgivable for most people? And why had Magnamon gone so far as to ban Haru and Tawna from the village outright?
This one missing piece would bridge everything together, and the click in Haru's mind was quite devastating to even watch. As Haru recoiled, tears starting to stream down her face, the Mikemon couldn't bear to look in her direction: through gritted fangs, he closed his eyes, knowing just how bad the bandage he just ripped off was. So many questions would pop up in her head, as just as many would be answered.
But Haru chose that question. The cat's ear flickered, the feline looking right down towards the rug before the chair, a slow, drawling breath escaping his fangs. His tone sounded rather defeated, as he finally gave his answer:
"I've known since before I met you. For most of my life, actually." The Mikemon looked towards Haru, from the corner of his eyes. "..."
He looked right back to the floor. Damn it, he just couldn't think of anything to say right there.

Haru was trying to still recover from the shock of the mission statement... If purely because this was an unpleasant revelation she would have never thought to have been possible, but here it was... written directly in front of her. How... how did she not notice all the little signs? Occasionally Digimon giving weird looks to Tawna, or being cautious even being near them... Tawna didn't seem to mind, but now Haru had plenty of reason to.
"I... I never knew... Is her species really that dangerous? Is she that dangerous?" she asked, unsure what to think anymore. This whole time, Mikemon knew that about this, yet never even hinted at it...? She knew that Tawna was a powerful fighter (enough to put pressure on someone like K even), but they never seemed to outright care for wanton destruction. That was a good thing at least as... what could have Tawna done if she had went berserk?
It... it would have been all her fault.
At the same time, she now understood why Tawna had acted the way she did back there more easily. Did Tawna know how dangerous her own kind was... and was that why they seemed so desperate to help? "Tawna said she wanted to help the Meicoomon change... Not follow her past mistakes..." she spoke, an air of hesitance in her voice. In a way, she almost knew what they meant by that now... but she was just so unwilling to accept that it was a possibility. "Mikemon... what did Tawna do before meeting me?" she cautiously asked, her teeth softly chattering. "... I met her when she was a Champion level... Does that...?"

Yes, the Mikemon was aware this whole time: aware of what a Meicoomon was capable of, and aware of how Tawna might be treated as a result. For the several long seconds that Haru peered over that mission statement, and tried to collect herself, the Mikemon simply waited in silence. Right now, he was feeling quite the amount of guilt - why couldn't he have brought this news sooner? Both Haru and Tawna might have been able to prepare better... but what would have been the reaction if he brought that up out of nowhere?
His ear twitched, as Haru's question broke his line of thought. Tilting his head in her direction, after a long moment of silence, the doctor gave a sigh. "Meicoomon have that sort of disposition, yes. They can be, and often are, very dangerous and feared hunters of the Digital World. As for Tawna, well, 'aato' follow a different rule than other Digimon. The fact that she's tied to a Digivice means she can't really be thought of as a 'typical' Digimon, or even a 'typical' Meicoomon." That was likely a bit more technical than Haru might have been willing to listen to for now, but it was really the best he could offer.
The next question, though, made him flinch, curling his left paw inside of his right. Tawna specifically mentioned her own 'past mistakes' - meaning that in the past, well, Tawna didn't follow the rules of an aato at all. His ear twitched, hearing those chattering teeth, and that chilling question. She asked the question, and for several seconds, Mikemon was silent.
He grit his teeth, biting his lip, the claw of his right digging into the glove of his left. "... Stop it." The cat shook his head, eyes starting to water. "We love Tawna. She's protected us. Protected you. Been braver than most of us."
He paused again, ears flattening down. "S... so please, Haru. Don't make me say it." The doctor looked in her direction, a serious tone in his tearing eyes.

An aato... she remembered that kinda being flung around during club conversations. A term thrown around to describe partner Digimon. Maybe because she was her partner now, they were different... but the past had to rear it's ugly face in still. "Though she wasn't always an aato... She had a past life as like some angels' guard dog, but I don't know what she did after reincarnating. She... she refused to talk about it." she spoke, fighting back tears.
This wasn't easy. This wasn't easy for either of them... and she had a feeling they both knew the answer, but didn't want to talk about it.
Haru did something that was perhaps unexpected, but indicative of her kind, caring nature... she offered a hug to the Champion level, her face equally moist. "I know... I know... Mikemon, Tawna is my friend too. She is not just my partner, she is literally my best friend... She means the world to me, and I know she feels the same." she spoke, fighting back her own anxieties and fears about her friend to get to the truth. "... I need to know though... Tawna isn't a happy person, and... I know now that the things she is bearing must be soul-crushing."
Haru tilted her head down, grimacing as she frowned. "... What kinda friend am I if I let her suffer alone? She is hurting more than I could have ever imagined."

Damn it, why did it have to come to this?
Haru already had a decent idea of what kind of Digimon Tawna might have been before the two met - heck, based on the Meicoomon's wording, the actions she had taken were all but confirmed. But the Mikemon did not want to crack open that can of worms... not for Haru's beloved Digimon. Tawna might have been rough around the edges, snarky, and even a bit of a pain at times, but for him to even say that?
It was hard. And Haru knew it was hard: blinking, the Mikemon looked up, as Haru extended her arms out to the Mikemon. The words the tamer said were clearly from her heart, fighting their way to the surface, through fear and uncertainty. Haru felt like she needed this - like she needed to understand the plight of her best friend.
It took the cat a moment, but as Haru gave that last statement, the Mikemon relented. He stepped up, and accepted that hug, returning her own, gently, around the tamer's back. "Damn it... damn it all..."
No, he had already resolved himself for this. Giving a nod, he looked right up towards Haru, a serious and calm expression taking over his face. "I'm not going to lie - since Tawna was tied to your Digivice, she couldn't have reached the state of Meicoomon on her own. Before she ever met you... she would likely have needed the data of three-or-so other Digimon to reach her current state."
His tone was careful, but the words were damning by themselves. It was the doctor's best guess, as he choked through his tears to say those words. "... It wouldn't surprise me. For a Meicoomon, that's their nature at heart."

This wasn't easy to swallow. Both she and Mikemon seemed to have come the conclusion that indeed, her partner was likely in the past a frequent absorber. "... I doubt all were in self-defense, or that she left enough data for them to be reborn. I think even now, she is willing to play for keeps." Haru softly spoke, patting Mikemon on the back in a attempt to comfort him as well. "I can accept that she is willing to kill and absorb a Digimon for good when necessary... Some people probably do not deserve mercy, but I believe that people deserve a chance to change."
Haru still did not think it was an easy thing to do, killing another... even if for Digimon they could come back. Absorbing a Digimon was even worse, for that denied them access to that cycle... it would have been no different killing a human. Still, even now, she felt Tawna had grown as a person to be able to make their own moral decisions. They have been treated to kindness, spire, love, hatred... They knew now what to consider right and wrong in their eyes. "Tawna... I know she's a good person deep down, whether thats how she is naturally is or not... A good person who was subject to terrible things, and because of that was denied the kindness she really needed for a long time."
Still, her opinion on Tawna's display of mercy was still up for debate. "What that Meicoomon did was horrid... and I don't know I am willing to forgive them ever, but I'm glad Tawna wanted to do something merciful for a change. I didn't see it back then, but I think... I think she saw herself in that Meicoomon. Someone who was lost and needed to be shown the way." she softly spoke, her mood having calmed down somewhat. It was clear the conversation was still very intense, but Haru was no longer quite in tears... just trying to grasp everything she could about all this. "Mikemon, do you think what she did was the right thing? Not just with this, but everything else... Do you think either of them could have been faulted for listening to their instincts?"
