Katsura was wandering through the streets, in her arms she was carrying Nyao the blackgatomon. It had been quite some interesting adventures recently, from helping new tamers connect with their digimon to dealing with Alexis, to saving the dark area from the D-Reaper, all while taking the time to adjust to school life. And as exciting as Katsura's current life is there had been very little chance for her to take a day off and just enjoy the things the way they are.
Which was exactly what Katsura planned to do today starting in a place that she knows well. Katsura stopped up at a bench where she sat placing Nyao on her lap.
"Now what to do, I don't really need money anymore. I could still do a routine for old times sake." Katsura looked at Nyao's face who was acting like her plus toy though Nyao didn't say anything Katsura nodded and understood.
"You're right, there's no need to risk those kind of things." Katsura looked up, she was staring at a large monitor on a building that was telling her the current news.

"Shit, OK, you know what? I really, really hate this part of town." Even though Leith's faithful friend Demiveemon was right beside him in the D-3 he wore prominently on his left wrist, the darkly dressed young man was actually just talking to himself as he struggled to navigate the congested crowds without being touched, make sense of the street signs, and figure out just where he'd gotten. His only saving grace was his smartphone, its GPS and its translator app that Leith made sure to download soon as he knew he'd be moving. It confirmed to him that, no, he was not in the A. East district and that therefore, yes, he had gotten off the bus at the wrong stop - if he had even gotten on the right bus at all.
Leith sat down on a bench, then, just to get his bearings. He covered his ears for a while just to try and tune out the sound of the bustling city environment, though, fearing overstimulation. Once he'd calmed himself enough, though, he went back to checking for directions and bus schedules on his phone only to find- "Oh, boy, that's not good. Five percent." It was then he accidentally brushed elbows with the girl beside him, at which point he apologized, "Sumimasen," using some of the very little Japense he knew. But before he could even think to bow, his eyes caught the cat in the girl's arms.
Leith came very close to just dismissing the toy as what it looked like, but he was hyper alert to strange things still so soon after meeting his first digimon. So he scrutinized the doll out of the corner of his eye to try and avoid suspicion. He thought he'd seen its eyes move, and he also knew he could see its chest rise and fall with breath no matter how much it tried to remain limp and still. No way! Is that-? Leith thought to himself. Well... I know one way to find out.
Leith shifted a little to face the girl a little more directly, gestured to the cat in her lap, and tried his best to ask, "Uh- is that- uh, I mean-" He then pointed at the 'plush toy' and just said simply, "D-digimon?" He figured if it was true, the pair would recognize that word, and if it wasn't, then he could chalk it up to a language barrier. If neither of those worked, Leith supposed, then that was why he wore his own device on his wrist: to draw the attention of those few, if any, around him who might recognize it.

As Katsura was sitting on the bench she didn't initially notice the man walking around speaking English, it was easy to dismiss a single voice when out in such a public place. After all when everyone is speaking it's surprisingly hard to hear anything. Eventually though the man decided to sit next to her on the bench this was harder to ignore and he rightly noticed Nyao turning her eyes for a brief second to check him out. Then as the man reached out for his phone he accidentally hit Katsura on the elbow. Startled the girl instantly put her hand on the shoulder and tilted away. After hearing him apologizing, without looking Katsura on reflex answerd.
"Kinisuruna"
But instead of completing the bow as apology, the man started studying Nyao. Nyao who was at this point trained in the art of acting in this case by freezing, staring empty out and holding her breath. It will soon be apparent that the damage was already done but in the meantime Katsura stared at the the man like an animal in zoo. What a weird guy Katsura thought. Then he started rambling in English, oh that explains it he's a tourist. Maybe that's why he's acting so weird. Well he managed to mustur something that made sense, the word "digimon". On that prompted Katsura reached towards her pocket to show her digidevice. She quickly hid it again.

Leith was able to recognize the sign of a Tamer when Katsura flashed it to him. Clearly communication could be a bit of a problem, but Leith was at least smart enough to flash his own D-3 in return, showing he was in on what ever little secret this partnership represented. "Demiveemon? Can you translate for me?"
"You got it!" a voice from within the digivice cheerfully agreed.
So Leith held the wrist with the digivice in front of him so that the happy little guy could interpret every word of Leith's into perfect Japanese as quick as Leith could say it in English. "I'm Leith, and the guy making it so you can actually understand me is Demiveemon." Demiveemon's happy little sprite waved at the other pair of tamers at that point. "I gotta admit, it's daring to carry your digimon around like that. I'd be terrified of someone seeing that he's alive." The young man paused, then, and thought for a second. "I kind of wanna ask for directions, but I'm a little more interested in what you're up to with your partner out in public like that."

Katsura was very curious about the digimon who somehow was inside the Digidevice this was a feature she was unaware of. Because of that she spent a lot of time studying his digidevice with interest, with that being said she still managed to listen to the Demiveemon anyway.
"How did your best friend for life get into your digidevice? Are you okay in there?" (an: until further notice, Katsura is still speaking Japanese).
Katsura then allowed Demiveemon to finish translating before answering to the questions about having Nyao out in the open.
"Your best friend for life shouldn't need to be in a tiny thingy, would you like to spend your life in a box? Oh right, don't worry so much about Nyao. To everyone else around here I'm just a silly girl who talks with her toy kitten. You're the first one to actually sniff her out. And if anyone finds out no one will believe them. How would you explain to a cop that my toy kitten is in fact alive without looking insane?"

"Right. That's a lot of questions. I'm gonna take those in reverse order." Leith frowned but tried to be civil despite the complete stranger's insinuation. "How would I explain it to a cop? Well, if I wanted to, I'd get the cop to just watch until she had to breathe. Can't hold it in forever - though I am impressed so far." He looked at the cat digimon when he said that last part. "Should my best friend for life be in a box? Don't jump to conclusions. We're friends, but we're also cautious, especially because Demiveemon can't pose as a real animal as easily as..." Leith only then realized he didn't know what digimon he was looking at. "...as she can." Leith looked at his digivice then and asked it, "I'll let you field the last one. You OK?"
Demiveemon took a quick break from translating to speak for himself then. "I feel good! I'm not in a box! I'm on a bench with Leith and his new friends!"
Don't you go jumping to conclusions either, Leith thought but didn't say to his partner. What he did say was, "It's all about perspective, I guess. Demiveemon and I are friends, but we haven't known each other enough for that level! Anyway, finally, how did he get in there? Haven't you ever seen a V-pet feature before?"

Katsura had a moment where just stared at Leith with empty soulless eyes, this corresponded with the time it took Demiveemon to translate into English. Then she stared at Demiveemon listening to the translated part, it was like Leith wasn't talking.
"Of course your digimon is your best friend for life, haven't you heard about the bond of digimon? At least tell me you know how bonded digimon evolve?" The matter of fact way Katsura spoke, especially the former sentences made it rather clear that Katsura did not acknowledge different opinions on the closeness of tamer and digimon. Leith would likely feel that Katsura was talking slightly down to Leith for the crime of having a different viewpoint than her own. A glance at Nyao's rolling eyes during that rant further revealed that Nyao was aware of this personality flaw, Nyao just didn't feel like making a scene about it. Then Nyao realized that the point against Katsura's example left the implications of her needing to speak, so she turned to Katsura.
"Maybe I should show them him-" "-No." Katsura interrupted in a firm voice.
"But I didn't eve-" "-No eyes." Nyao pouted like a spoiled teen over this brutal turndown, whatever deal there was with eyes Katsura won't even discuss the possibility of using them. Katsura turned to Leith to continue the conversation.
"I hope you spend some time in boxes for your best friend for life then, it's only fair you share. I never thought about such a thing, why would I not want to spend every single second together with Nyao? I can't hug a digidevice and it certainly won't protect me from danger either. I like portals though. Which reminds me, check this out, Nyao plush."
Once Nyao was back in character, Katsura got up while carrying Nyao. Then as a middle aged man came by she walk up in front of him and holding the now seemly motionless cat right in his face.
"My kitty it talks to me! Look, I'm serious!"
The man, however only laughed.
"Sure it does, go away kid you're annoying." The man then pushed Katsura out of the way and as soon as he didn't look Katsura counted to 3 on her fingers. As soon as she reached 3 the man pointed his finger to his head to imply that Katsura was mentally insane. Rather than taking offense by the gesture , Katsura glanced at Leith with an "I told you so" look before presuming sitting.

I should be walking away right now, the young man thought to himself as he watched this creepy little girl go from friendly to sociopathic to reckless to completely neutral in the span of just one minute. This chick probably has a knife hidden on her. Leith felt his own pocket then. I still have five percent battery. Maybe that's just long enough to- As Leith extracted his phone and unlocked it, the screen only stayed on barely long enough for him to read [1%] before the screen went completely dark. Oh, nevermind. I guess I'm just fucked.
Well, since Leith was stuck waiting for a bus (and praying one would come quickly), he supposed there was no escape. Maybe it was a bad decision that the next thing out of his mouth was a defense of his relationship with Demiveemon, but it seemed he was just a little more proud than he was scared. "I haven't told you how you and your digimon should live your lives. People get on me enough about who to kiss; don't you start with how close you think the pair of us should be after just a few days." Leith's posture was more direct now and confrontational. Though trying to avoid a full-fledged argument, he was simultaneously refusing to back down. "I don't know anything about portals and danger, but I figure I'll just stay in the safer parts of town." Leith began tapping his foot anxiously then and averted eye contact when his tone of voice shifted a little. "So, uh... I don't suppose you know when the next bus rolls around here?"

Surprisingly, Nyao was actually siding with Leith it seemed. "Katsura, we have talked about not going to far." Katsura breathed out to "calm" herself down.
"Sorry about that I sometimes get carried away when it's about digimon. The bond between a human and digimon is special to me. You could say it's a special interest I have." Katsura didn't quite understand the Leith's posture so she just smiled at him the same, she remembered that he had just looked at his phone. Did he want to leave this sudden?
"Etooo... did I use the wrong emotion again? I always get happy and sad mixed up it's a bit confusing to me." Behind the smile Katsura looked disappointed, maybe there wasn't much point in socializing with others. Maybe Katsura was only able to scare others away from her. Well after hearing him asking about the bus Katsura grabbed her shoulder in a shrug.
"Eto, I don't use public very often. You see, I spent the last year in the digital world and now I just use portals to go teleport wherever I need to go. Usually the digital world actually, it's much nicer most of the time."

Leith raised a curious eyebrow at the mention of portals and the digital world. Is she for real? She doesn't even, like, ride the bus? Leith curiously checked his digivice's menu, then. It had a fair few functions, but portal opening was not one of them. Then again, it seems like a few of the other freaks like me I've met have stuff I don't. Then of course there was the small matter of Katsura not understanding basic human emotions, but Leith wasn't sure he really wanted to open that can of worms. That settles it, the young man decided based on that remark, I'm talking to a sociopath.
The digital world, though. Humans could get there. He knew this already from Demiveemon but had never really thought about its implications (and he certainly never thought humans would ever actually choose to even go there, let alone live there). "Hmm. You think it's nicer?" The young man's interest seemed to be back in the conversation, then, as he once again made tentative eye contact. "Demiveemon's never been there himself, and frankly neither have I. What's it actually like? I mean, that's probably a really broad, hard question to answer, but I'm totally in the dark."
Demiveemon was the one to unexpectedly pile onto the question with another just then: "And why are you so interested in digimon? I mean, ha, it's flattering, obviously!"

Katsura looked at Leith's raised eyebrows with confusion, it was quickly getting apparent that she had trouble reading Leith. Why didn't he fit into her mental catalogue of people? Katsura wasn't going to admit it but her struggle with interacting with normal people was actually one of the main reasons for her extended visits to the digital world. Fortunately for Katsura's self-esteem it looked like Leith had gained new interest in the conversation. And thus she listened to Demiveemon's translation he also happened to be asking questions on his own.
"It's really nice there once you get used to digimon that's sometimes ten times your size or more. You can get everything in Terminus and then you can just relax by exploring the forest. Sometimes I go visit my friends in the dark area, it's a bit I don't know "edgy" out there in the dark area and Nyao won't let me go there without first assuming a higher form for some reason. You see, Nyao doesn't trust the digimon there that much, she thinks the dark area is dangerous, but as you know all digimon are nice and friendly. That's also what I like most about the digital world, how a digimon can't be evil and always have at least a good reason."

"I realize I haven't met very many digimon, but somehow I find it hard to believe digimon are never evil. In terms of, you know, personality and moral compass and stuff, it feels like they're really not that different from us... except, you know, the whole lizard-rabbit-from-another-dimension aspect. And I can't help thinking that if the place is literally called 'the dark area,' then Nuaoki might be onto something." Leith wasn't entirely sure he should trust this odd stranger's description of the digital world as nice and friendly and relaxing. The mention of an actual city, or so Leith assumed Terminus was, dispelled some of his preconceptions that the whole place was like a feral, unpredictable wilderness, though. Plus, it wasn't as if Leith had another source to ask about life in the digital world. "Hey. Demiveemon. Do you mind acting like a plush toy like that cat there?"
"No problem!" the digimon agreed.
"Alright, then. Demiveemon, realize." Leith looked around before reversing the V-Pet to summon the little blue digimon onto his lap. To the boy's surprise, Demiveemon did a surprisingly good impression of a toy, and even though the boy felt a little odd appearing to be traveling with a kid's toy without the appearance of a little girl to justify it, he had to admit Demiveemon sold it well. He even had the good sense to speak quietly when translating and only when no one was passing by. "See, the truth is, we've thought about it. We think the answer to why we've become partners might be in the digital world. I mean, we don't have any evidence for that, but, you know, where else is there to look?"

"You're right, you haven't met many digimon so you don't understand them the way I do. But you'll see"
What a way to ignore the point and somehow make Leith the uneducated one, it seems like Katsura is a very hard nut to crack when it comes to whether every digimon in the world is nice. "Who's Nuaoki?" Katsura asked curiously, this was a name she didn't recognize. Katsura then witnessed Leith and Demiveemon had decided to copy her plush scheme and with surprisingly efficiently. Katsura studied Demiveemon and even glued her face right in front of him, Demiveemon could see right into Katsura's eyes and even his own reflection.
"Hmmmmm, not bad for a first attempt. It took Nyao a while to get the hang of not moving around. You seem like a natural." Katsura finally allowed Demiveemon to get some personal space as she sat up proper. Then she listened to Demiveemon explaining why they thought about the digital world it was to understand why they became partners. Katsura then spoke to Demiveemon.
"Oh, he's going to love the digital world! Ever since I first walked in there I found out how much better it is to be around digimon and other humans with bonds, than... People-people. I used to be scared of digimon once, but don't you worry he'll be just like me in no time." What a thing to look forward to, the day where you become Katsura's clone!

"Whatever the digimon's name is. Her," was Leith's response to the question of the name, "Japanese names still make my tongue tie in knots." As Katsura so closely scrutinized Demiveemon, the digimon got a little taste of what his human partner was feeling toward the strange girl. Leith even heard Demiveemon swallow a lump forming in his throat. I don't blame you, he thought privately but couldn't say to the digimon discretely.
"Alright," Leith finally admitted after pondering the sociopath's claims, "I'm curious. If it's really as nice as you say it is, then it's a real freakin' paradise." Leith picked Veemon up then and stood. "And ff you really spend so much time there, maybe we'll bump into each other some time. But for now, I really gotta figure out how the hell I'm gonna get home. Although..." Leith looked down at the little blue guy in his hands. "Up for a challenge, Veemon? If we can get all the way home with minimum funny looks, that'll be proof you don't have to be stuck in the digivice whenever I'm out." Veemon didn't reply verbally; he just kept being limp in Leith's arms. "Good answer." He turned to the girl then. "Well... Nice meeting you. Tell Satan I said hello and I'll see him soon."

"It's Nyao" The gatomon corrected Leith who apparently couldn't pronounce her name. Then she looked at Katsura pitifully, once again Katsura has scared others away just by being herself. Did Katsura even realize this? Nyao wondered. But at least Katsura now understood the comment about the dark area.
"Oh, the dark area isn't that bad either. Many friends of mine are dark digimon including a Piedmon who is an actual lord." Katsura nodded confidently at the notion about the digital world being a paradise, all sarcasm and backhanded compliments at the expense of the poor girl's credibility was lost on Katsura and Nyao didn't have the heart to break it to her either. Meaning Nyao just shock her head while Katsura wasn't looking. And now it looks like they were leaving, oh they were it sounded while taking her advice about carrying the digimon as a plush.
"Oh I'm glad to be helpful"
It took Katsura a minute to get the insult in telling her to greet Satan. Sadly Leith was already gone by the time she looked.
