Shouma and Amelie and their fateful first meeting!
Shouma wasn’t afraid of heights. He also rather liked the sensation of falling. He’d been big into skateboarding while it was a new fad, and there’s a distinct tugging sensation in your stomach, and that rush of adrenaline that makes your eyes pop out. It was a unique feeling.
Shouma just didn’t know where he was falling TO.
Last thing he knew, he’d been in the public library, posting to forums about his lack of presence on social media. He’d been doing an apology Q&A, and then the next thing he knew there was a bright, blinding light. Now he was tumbling down through the air, towards what looked like a patch of open grass surrounded by denser forest. And he was yelling, because that’s what you do when falling magically through the air to a strange and unknown place.
WHAMP!!
Shouma hit the ground with enough force that it should have killed him. There was a dust cloud (dandelion cloud? Shouma’s head was spinning, he couldn’t tell), and a loud sound, and that whole body pain like he’d just belly-flopped way too hard into a pool. But he knew he wasn’t dead. Mostly because his ribs hurt and he was still breathing. ”Ach ach ach!” he moaned out to nobody. He didn’t dare move, out of fear something was broken. But he heard the rustling of plastic, and a small ovular device fell out of his numbed fingers. It looked like it belonged in an old movie, leeched of color and just…not really there yet. Its screen glowed faintly, as if giving up one last gasp, before the strange handheld radio went completely lifeless.
Welcome to…wherever this was…Shouma!

Mainframe Hills, a verdant expanse, where anything remotely hostile seldom happened. It was a good place to have a stroll, to clear one's thoughts, and most importantly, to take a break from the miasmic air that polluted most of the Dark Area.
There she was, a lone brunette walking calmly without a clear destination. Sure, she had to go and pick up Syre in like... four or so hours, but that wasn't much of an issue, honestly. She could get to The Library in the blink of an eye if she needed to, making the whole deal a non-issue.
So, a bit of time for herself in order to just... relax a clear her thoughts in one of the calmer places this world had to offer; it sounded like a good plan, right?
However, calm was a relative term in the Digital World, as the falling boy some distance ahead. If Amelie could be sure of anything, is that the fall would hurt a fair bit.
Involuntarily wincing as soon as the deed was done, her pace became a brisk jog in that direction. Once close enough, she began to call in the person's direction as she drew closer.
"Hey~!" Dropping into this place usually didn't cause permanent injury, but it never hurt to ask. "That was quite the fall."
By now, Amy was next to the unknown person; she felt both relief and a disappointment that it wasn't somebody she recognized at plain sight, but that was something the teenager would have to take care of later. "Are you alright?"

The friendly, if unfamiliar, face was a welcome sight. Shouma smiled weakly, braving a brief shuffle up onto his elbows to get a better look, both at her and the world around him. His left arm throbbed a little, but nothing seemed broken. If anything he felt…lighter? Almost like he was buzzing. ”I…I think so?” he spoke tentatively, his eyes raking over unfamiliar greenery. ”Toto…Kansas…” he gestured at the world around him, hoping she’d get the reference, ”Uh, where are we?” he asked finally, more concerned about the fact that he wasn’t in the public library anymore. He looked up, where he saw nothing but empty sky. No sign of the glowing hole he’d fallen through. ”Not to sound crazy, but three seconds ago I was in a public library, answering fan mail. I like the countryside, but I wasn’t exactly planning a visit, if you catch my drift. Are we near Kamakura? Or Nikko?”
Shouma had already come to the realization that it was likely none of the above, but he was still hoping for a more mundane explanation. This place looked as alien as it felt. And the way he’d traveled here by warp point was not a good sign. It was only then, like a lightning bolt, that he realized that he had been delightfully rude. ”Oh! Where are my manners?” The scrawny boy scrambled to his feet, suddenly no longer afraid anything was broken. He bowed gracefully, deeply respectful since he was meeting a girl for the first time. ”Saito Shouma. Pleasure to meet you. Excuse my rudeness. I was sort of just dropped on my head.” He stayed bowed for a few seconds too long. And when he straightened back up, he saw the discarded little oval device, sitting in the grass, looking gray and sad and lonely.
”Oh! Is this yours?” he held the little device out to the girl, assuming she must’ve dropped it. He’d never seen the little handheld walkie talkie before. It couldn’t be his.

This was going to be a pretty interesting meeting, wasn't it? Every clue effectively at this guy being pretty much a newcomer, and that could only mean one thing.
Mustering a small smile at the stranger expressing his well-being, she began to address his doubts. "Regrettably, my name isn't Toto, and... I think yours isn't Dorothy, either." Of course, he was catching the obvious, that tugging at the brunette's lips a bit more. "But you're right; we're not not in Kansas. Or in Kamakura nor Nikko."
Still, he seemed to not be in a hurry to find out, even though she'd probably tell him the truth in due time. For now, it seemed like some pleasantries were in order; that was alright. Amy reciprocated her bow with a small one of her own. "It's not a big deal, don't worry! My name's Amelie, but you can call me Amy if you want to; everyone does."
Shaking her head at the offer of the device offered her way, Amelie thought this was probably the best time to address... well, everything. "If I were to make a wild guess, I'd say that device is yours; and believe me when I say that you'll probably need it really soon."
Momentarily, she gazed at the horizon before shrugging. "It's probably going to be a rude awakening, but this place doesn't hold a candle to Oz. I could give you some more details first, but..." A fair warning came first! "You'll have to approach the topic with an open mind. On its counterpoint, I can say I can bring you back to Shibuya at any time and you'll be free to forget this small trip. Your choice!"
In all honesty, the brunette was a bit eager to hear that one response? Would Shouma accept or reject her proposal? Time to find out.

”Mine?” Shouma looked down at the thing in his hand. He definitely didn’t own it. It also didn’t look…pleasant. It seemed dead. Less than dead, even. It seemed like it did belong in the Wizard of Oz. It was leeched of color like a black and white movie. It didn’t get the memo that films were all made in 4K now. In his fingers it almost looked like a bad copy/paste job. It didn’t quite fit in. Still, he held onto it. Worst case scenario, he could find whoever dropped it in this field. If the girl said it wasn’t hers he believed her. ”Well, if you say so, Miss Amelie,” like with the deep bows, Shouma was formal to a fault, ”Guess I’ll hold onto it. But it doesn’t seem to do much. Why would I need it?” He tried tapping the buttons on its surface, but they didn’t do anything.
His question was swiftly forgotten, however, since Amelie began to launch into a…mysterious sentence, to say the least. She sounded like the quest giver at the beginning of one of his RPGs. ‘A dark and mysterious tale I have to tell, but only if you choose to accept it. Or you can leave now and never return…’ He almost chuckled at the idea, but stilled his expression before he could laugh at her. She might think he was being rude. ”So you’re about to say something that I’m going to think is crazy. And you don’t want me to think you’re a loon,” Shouma smiled, ”Miss Amelie, I just fell from a hole in the sky that opened up in the middle of a library! I’m already way past loon and more like permanent psychiatric resident. Nothing you say could make me think less of you.”
His next sentence was subtle, but there was a lack of energy to his words. ”Besides, I have no desire to be at home right now. I think a walk in Oz would do me a lot more good than going back to Shibuya.” There was a story to be told here, if she had the time or the inclination to ask about it. ”Plus I can’t resist a good mystery. Dead walkie talkies, magical skyholes, somehow not being dead after that fall, and this alien not-quite-Nikko zone. I think only a crazy person wouldn’t at least want you to explain first.” He extended the hand not holding onto the walkie talkie, ”So I accept, Miss Amelie. An open mind. Now, tell me what kind of trouble I’ve gotten myself into.”

Surprising; this was actually the first time somebody had expressed trepidation over accepting a digivice. Ultimately, that was fine.
It took a variable amount of time, but most humans came to realize how valuable digivices were sooner or later. Regarding the guy himself, however? He seemed like a pleasant person, even if probably way too polite given their circumstances; not something that Amelie minded on the slightest, but still worth noting.
Miss Amelie had a weird ring to it, honestly.
As expected, she purposefully ignored the question about the device's usefulness; instead, she moved onto what came next. More or less nailing the point of her whole speech, the brunette couldn't but just shrug, a small smile gracing her features. "What can I say? Different people take this matter differently. A fair warning has never hurt anybody, hasn't it? Even if what you have said makes perfect sense, not everyone takes falling into an alien landscape so easily."
While thankful that he thought that she wasn't crazy, that wasn't much of a compliment in hindsight, wasn't it? Currently, that was beside the point, however.
The teenager quirked an eyebrow at Shouma mentioning he didn't want to be at his home, but preferred to not delve into it; everyone had their reasons and she was in no place to inquire about them. Instead, she focused on the matter at hand. Admittingly, this has gone way smoother than expected.
"Basically." The smile on her face began to recede, making way for a way more serious expression. She sighed, then began walking in a seemingly random direction. If he followed, she'd continue. "Technically, this isn't planet Earth anymore; we're in a parallel world called the 'Digital World'."
Letting that sink in for a few moments, she continued. "It's really hard to describe, but let's say that this is a world that'd leave most fantasy settings cowering in shame, and while this area looks relatively normal, some definitely don't. From meat apples to every fantastic animal that you can imagine, chances are that this place has them." Ultimately, that was a bit vague, wasn't it? "You'll probably understand it better when you see them, as long as you're not intimidated by sapient beasts that can come in any size and color."
Why was this information important? Well, in order for that to be relevant, it was time to go back to that unanswered question. "That funny-looking device that you found? It's called digivice and it means that you're destined to find one of this world's inhabitants and form an unbreakable bond of friendship and live exciting adventures... or something like that. I'm not very experienced on that matter."
Hopefully, that'd be a good enough introduction! "Any questions thus far? It's probably better to tackle them as they come."

”Parallel…world? Digital…world,” Shouma said the words, not skeptically, but analytically, like he was tasting them and feeling the weight of them. He looked up at the sky, where the “hole” he fell through used to be (and was now was not). ”Digital. Digital. Like computers. So you’re saying I’m in a computer right now? Like a video game or something?” Shouma’s mouth twisted up into a playful smirk. He knew a thing or two about video games. He knew several things about them, being a well known streamer for exactly that. And while this was starting to seem like more of a survival game of some kind, games had rules.
The digivice meant he was destined to bond with one of this world’s inhabitants, eh? Sounded like a game’s kind of rules. ”Lemme guess, this ‘inhabitant’ I’m supposed to find…he does the fighting for me, because the fantastical animals are way stronger than me? And the inhabitant levels up? Gets stronger? The longer I’m here, right?” Shouma was already imagining how the game was played. He went from being confused to being excited, bouncing from foot to foot and beginning to psyche himself up. ”Oh man, this is totally like an RPG!”
”Do I get to use magic? Is there a deep, dark seated evil I’m destined to destroy? Is there a prophecy?” Shouma just started to tick off the boxes of standard RPG plots. The shock of being in a different world seemed relatively underwhelming, to be frank. He was less concerned, since this girl said she could take him home if he needed to go. So it wasn’t like he was stuck here. He could save and quit at any moment. But one actual question did strike him as terribly important. ”Why me though? I’m not really anyone special. I’m a pretty killer Hanzo, and you don’t wanna come near me if I’m playing Paint Roller, but I can’t really say I’m…unique. If you were picking heroes to save the world, I’m not exactly my first choice, let alone anyone else’s.” Shouma paused then added, ”And where’s your inhabitant, if we’re all destined to find one? Or are you new like me, and haven’t found them yet? Is that the game? First act is everybody hunting for their partner.”
Now that he thought about it, questions flew faster than he could speak them. Just those would do, for now.

Shouma seemed like a pretty sharp kid, at least according to Amelie's first impressions. The guy was grasping every new concept thrown at him really quickly; precocious, that was for sure! Thoughtful for a second, the brunette pondered about a suitable answer before speaking.
"You could say that you're inside a computer or video ga,e if you really wanted to, but that'd be a bit of a gross understatement. What happens in this place is as real as if it would've happened in the world where we come from, and I'd dare to say it's too complex to be simplified that much. But if you wanted to be super vague and have rough definition, then yes. Your assessment is more or less right."
Truthfully, and while their current area held next to no dangers... Amy couldn't help but to worry about a newcomer. "I know it's the 'boring' type of advice, but... be cautious; it's fine to be excited an all, but if you bite more than what you can chew, this place won't forgive you."
That was a fair enough warning, right? Even if something that nobody talked about in any significant way, the teenager couldn't imagine how many fresh digidestined had met early demises due to being overeager. No need to add one more person to the count, right? For now, however... the guy seemed to more excitement and questions to try and pin this world as a game of sorts, in all honesty. However, questions were questions, and some of them were pretty legitimate.
"Don't get me wrong; while capable of fighting and having 'superpowers', most digimon are kinda peaceful. The one that will be partnered with you will have their hopes, dreams and plans for the future, and whether those involve fighting or not will depend both on they and you. This isn't about some fighting circuit and getting badges to compete in a league or anything; it's about life and maturing. But that'll depend on how you two will engage that world, mostly."
One thing was for sure; for Amelie, this wasn't like an RPG at all. It was both more serious and more fulfilling than what a single game could ever hope to accomplish. "No magic, no evil lurking that you need to destroy and no prophecy here, as far as I know, or better said... not in the grandiose or epic scale. There's good and bad people, just like in our world, and you can probably find somebody to read your tarot cards or something of the like if you wanna feel like the destiny factor is there. That should be good enough, right?" She made a pause; probably it was better to be brief with this and get to the point. "If you really want to see this world as a game, I guess that you ought to have three things in mind; you're not the protagonist, you don't have plot armor, and you only get one attempt at playing the game. Always have that in mind."
That'd be good enough to probably be a decent wake-up call, hopefully. Especially when the silhouette of The Village of Beginnings began to become a tiny point at the distance. "As in regards to why you were chosen? Beats me; this world is as whimsical as it gets, and hundreds of new humans get chosen every day. Knowing the criteria would help a lot, though." She had to admit, one thing, however. Guy was really good at asking questions of the interesting kind! "I already had inhabitant with me for a fair bit of time, even though that works a bit differently on my side. You'll learn about that stuff down the line; don't worry about it. I had my fair bit of time on this world, and I can't say I regret being chosen, even though the number of close calls has been a lot more than what I'd like, honestly."
Having an inquisitive mind was good, even though it was probably too soon to teach the guy what spirit wielders were, considering he hadn't gotten his partner yet. Had to maintain a pace, right? Hopefully, they'd be able to find his digimon partner in here. Lengthy explanation aside, Shouma seemed to be well on his way regarding the Digital World. He'd surely do well in the future, whether he decided to reach Terminus or make a beeline to the Village of Beginnings.
Regarding Amelie? Regrettably, she couldn't accompany him anymore, regrettably. A bit of a pity, but that was one of the many risks of a busy life. Maybe they'd see each other in another ocassion? Probably!
For now, the brunette bade him farewell before beginning to tread towards the big city herself. A couple of meetings, among other things.
But that wasn't very important at the moment. It would as soon as she got there. [Exit]
