CHAPTER I: THE DREAM, THE GIRL, AND THE BUNNY
Episode 4: The Unbreakable Bond Between a Tamer and her Partner! A Whole World to Discover Woken up by the morning sun coming in from the little gap made between the drapes and the window, Katherine sat on the bed, rubbing her eyes with her fists, trying to recover some perception of reality. She felt like she had been asleep forever. Looking down, she remembered she had decided to sleep in her underwear, since her school uniform was awfully dirty, considering she had been wearing it since she arrived to this world. She stood up, bare feet, and took a peek through the window. Far from being cold, even though being half-naked, she felt even a little hot; which wasn’t a big surprise considering they were in a town right in the middle of the desert. Trying to process everything that had transpired in the last two days was a pretty hard task, to say the least.
After having a weird vision, she had woken up with an odd device right next to her bed, which she would later discover it was a ‘digivice’, a gadget that came from another world where ‘digimon’ (digital monsters) lived. After some interactions with some very nice (and some other very mean) digimon, she decided to travel to this world to find her digimon partner: a digimon that was supposed to be at her side and that digivice was associated to. She arrived Rustport, met Yume and her twin digimon partners: Toy and Cloudy, after being robbed from her digivice by three Psychemon, and then going to their hideout to recover it, discovering they weren’t the mean bandits she thought they were and meeting their leader: Jazz the Lopmon. They had to fight Fugamon and his gang, some truly evil bandits Katherine had unintentionally lead to Jazz’s hideout through Koemon, a monkey digimon Katherine and Jazz managed to defeat working together, while Yume and her twins defeated Fugamon, saving the day. They escaped the hideout before it crumbled due to the fierce battle, and even managed to get out from the sandpit the explosion caused, thanks to Vermillimon, a friend Katherine made during her infiltration into the hideout.
Taking a peek through the curtains, Katherine could see a regular day taking place through the streets of Rustport, while most of the townsfolks hadn’t found out about the huge battle that took place yesterday inside Gururu Cave. She was currently at the second floor of Meramon’s house. He and his team had stopped the group as they went into Rustport yesterday, after escaping that sand pit that almost killed them back in the desert. Even though she was scared at first, thinking it might be another enemy, Katherine then discovered Meramon was Rustport’s Chief of Security, and had found out about the invasion of Fugamon’s gang to Gururu Cave after capturing and questioning Revolmon, a member of Fugamon’s gang that had caused Yume and her twins some trouble, during the whole ‘followers of Jazz’ confusion. Katherine couldn’t be more grateful to Yume, Cloudy and Toy for all of their help during all of this adventure at Rustport, sadly, they have parted ways after Gururu Cave crumbled. Meramon had asked Katherine, Jazz and the Psychemons to come to his house for questioning, which they agreed to because they didn’t need any more enemies and because they really didn’t have anywhere else to go to spend the night; Katherine was a newcomer to this world, and Jazz’s bandits had lost their home during the fierce battle.
Katherine spotted what seemed to be a set of clothes on a desk next to an opened door that led to a private bathroom. Her eyes lighten up at the sight: she was finally going to take a shower and put on some clean clothes. The cold water falling on her body just felt more refreshing than ever. She even had soap and shampoo; it seemed like someone had prepared this bath for her, could it have been Meramon? Whoever it was, she was very grateful, because this was just what she needed. While she rubbed the shampoo on her hair and closed her eyes, she couldn’t help but think what was going to happen with Jazz and the Psychemons. She had discovered they were actually very good digimon, but the fact they were bandits couldn’t be denied. Were they going to jail? Wasn’t there anything that could be done? After putting her new clothes on, she took a glance in the mirror. She had red leather pants, a too little for her liking black top and a dark blue jacket, that couldn’t be buttoned up, so her hips and belly were completely exposed. Even though it seemed like a little too much for her, she had to admit she looked great, and that such clothes would definitely help against the hot weather of Rustport. There was a girl-cowboy hat along with all the clothes, the girl shrugged mumbling ‘Why not?’ and putting it on too.
Coming down the stairs, Katherine looked around the place, it had a very classic style, with paintings of different digimon she couldn’t recognize hung up the walls and a very antique design. There was not a single digimon to be seen. Looking for Jazz and the others, Katherine took the first door to her left after the last stair step was made since it seemed like a good place to start looking as any. Entering this room, she spotted Meramon sitting on a chair behind a desk, she seemed to have entered his office.
--Oh, Mrs. Jasso, I can see you’re up. Welcome to my office, please take a seat.

-I can see you rested well. I’m sure you needed it –Meramon looked at Katherine from head to toes, as she approached her seat in front of him, across his desk. -Thanks for the clothes and… well, everything. –Katherine took a seat and gave a soft smirk to Meramon. -No need to thank me for that. How long had you been up? –Meramon asked. He had a human shape like he was a regular tall man, but his whole body was composed of flames, and his eyes were light blue. For some reason, these flames didn’t seem to light up things around him; Katherine could only assume it was something he could control. –Jazz and one of the Psychemon came in earlier, they were exhausted from the battle but didn’t seem to be near as tired as you were. –He was right, before that battle, Katherine had been around 36 hours already without a good night of sleep, so it all made sense. -Jazz was already here? –Katherine eyes widened, showing a worried expression. –Please, you can’t arrest them, I know they are bandits but they are not bad digimon! -Relax, already –Meramon said with a soft smile, waving his hand in a dismissing manner –We’re not going to arrest them. If we wanted to, we would’ve done it months ago –He added. -What? -We knew they were living inside of Gururu Cave, didn’t you see the sign? –He raised an eyebrow. -You’re right... –Katherine placed a hand on her chin-There was a sign. But then… -We didn’t have any interest in catching them –Meramon interrupted- We know they used the money they gathered from selling stuff they stole to help the homeless baby digimon wandering around Rustport and the dessert. –He explained- Even the townsfolks knew this, and they didn’t have any interest in denouncing them for their acts. –The fire digimon giggled at Katherine’s stunned expression –Come on, you wouldn’t think we would have trouble catching 4 rookie digimon with such an obvious hideout. We just let them free since they weren’t hurting anybody, and they were actually trying to help those little guys. -The Meramon leaned back in his chair. -That's all solved now. As I told the Psychemons and Jazz earlier, we're working on a program to build a house where all the baby digimon wandering around the streets of Rustport can live, so they don't have to beg for food.
-But did you know they were paying Fugamon so he didn’t hurt them nor the babies? –Katherine asked. -That we didn’t know –Meramon admitted –But we did know there was some connection, that’s another reason why we decided to let them free, cause maybe they could lead us to Fugamon, we just didn’t think they would defeat him, and I think you probably had a lot to do with that. -Me? Well… -Katherine had taken part of the fight at some points, like ringing the bell when Fugamon was about to kill Boru or helping Jazz fighting Koemon, but in her head, she didn’t feel like she did that much. -Of course, Mrs. Jasso. You were very brave –Meramon stated, with a serious look. –Although I suppose that’s only logical, given the digimon that was involved. -Huh? –Katherine tilted her head slowly. Meramon’s eyes widened in disbelief. -I mean… you do know Jazz is you digimon partner, right? –He asked.

Being hit with such realization was something Katherine had mixed feelings about; on one side she felt incredibly happy, while on the other one, she felt stunned for being so dumb to not have seen this before. Thinking about it, there wasn’t a single reason not to think Jazz was her digimon partner, and most importantly there were plenty of reasons to think she was: she felt a very strong connection between her and the bunny and the digivice had lightened up during their battle against Koemon. But, could it be? Could it be that much of a coincidence she had found her partner so quickly after arriving at the Digital World?
-B-but… I just arrived in this world… -Katherine said, lowering her view to think about it.
-I have met some tamers before, Mrs. Jasso, and I can only tell those devices you’ve got, work on mysterious ways. –Meramon frowned. –That thing might have brought you as close as was necessary so you found your partner.
While Katherine wasn’t the type of person of believing in fate and such things, it made sense her digivice could have had, somehow, an effect on the Shibuya River portal and had thrown there close enough to Jazz, her partner. The bond was there, Katherine could feel it, she couldn’t even try to deny it. She felt the need to protect Jazz, and even she could say she felt the need of being next to her.
-It makes sense –The brunette placed her right hand on her chin. –So Jazz, the bandit, is my partner?
-If you’re accepting this so easily is because you feel it too –The fire digimon stood up, and walked towards a window, just behind him.
-I do… -Katherine sighed. –But, I mean, it’s not like only what I feel is important here. –She added. –What about Jazz?
-I talked to her personally earlier, just the two of us. –Katherine’s eyes widened at Meramon’s statement. –She said she had felt a strong connection to this digivice since the Psychemons brought it to her. –Meramon walked back to his deck and opened a drawer, taking out the digivice and handing it to Katherine –The maids gave it to me after they found it between your clothes. Those are in the laundry room, probably dried already. You can keep the ones you’re wearing.
-Thank you… -Katherine said, yet still with a downed glance. –So you say Jazz feels a connection to this digivice? –The raven-haired girl asked.
-She does. And that’s your digivice, isn’t it? –Meramon asked, obviously knowing the answer. –Jazz knows you’re her partner.
-But does she… -Katherine raised her view, with a worried expression. –Does she feel a connection with me? –Given the set of words Meramon had used, Katherine asked this already knowing the answer. Jazz didn’t feel a thing.
-She’s… denying it. –Silence engulfed the room- But… -Meramon interrupted himself. Katherine stood up, keeping her sight down again, and walking quickly towards the door.
-Mrs. Jasso, wait! I know she feels it she’s just…
-It’s okay, Meramon… -The girl stopped just before going out the door, containing her tears. –Thanks for everything, I’ll be out of your house very soon. –She walked out, closing the door behind her. Starting to feel how she couldn’t contain the tears anymore, Katherine entered the closest door she saw, going inside the room and closing the room behind her. Then, the tears just started pouring. She was completely devastated; even more than she thought she would be. She had found her partner, but her worst nightmare had become a reality: her partner didn’t like her. Just like in school, just like in the playground, just like during her whole life: nobody accepted her, nobody truly liked her. Katherine covered her mouth with her right hand, so her crying wouldn’t be heard, since her crying was intense, was deep. Tears just didn't stop coming out.
-Why… are you… crying? –A voice asked.

The silence across the room was broken by a somewhat familiar voice. Katherine’s eyes widened and she raised her head, looking for her addresser. There was a bed at around 10 steps from the girl's position, with his body halfway under blankets, Boru the Psychemon was lying, with his eyes half closed.
-You woke me up –The digimon giggled. He didn’t seem angry or upset about it.
-I-I’m sorry! –Katherine apologized, quickly trying to clear the tears from her eyes, using her hands.
-T-that’s okay, I don’t even feel like lying here –The horned giggled again –But they told me I need to rest.
-And you should. The last time I saw you, you unleashed a mighty attack that left you unconscious –The girl began walking slowly towards the bed. Psychemon had a very exhausted, yet please expression on his face.
-I did, didn’t I? –He asked with a goofy voice –I thought the boss would be mad at me for using that technique, but she was pretty proud I kicked that Goblimon’s ass! –To be fair, if it wasn’t for that technique, Boru would have been lost. He had no chance of winning in one on one physical confrontation, he had to finish the whole thing in one blow. So his choice was more of a desperate measure than a planned use of a technique. –Thank you, for real. –He added, to Katherine’s surprise. -Me? What for? –The girl tilted her head -You distracted Goburimon with that crazy entrance, which gave me the chance to charge up the Super Psyche Shot. –He explained –You bought me the time I needed. I would have never been able to prepare such blast if something didn’t take Goblimon’s attention off me. –He was right to some extent. The girl totally unprepared entrance, distracted the goblin long enough for Boru to prepare such a powerful attack. After that, the whole structure started collapsing, though; so Katherine could see why her brothers and Jazz had forbidden him to use that, but then again, desperate times required desperate measures. -Well, you did awesomely, Boru –A soft smile was drawn on the girl’s face.
-Hey, you’re not crying anymore, hehe –He said with a goofy tone but still in a low register –That’s good. -Of course I’m not! –She said, making sure there were no tears in her eyes as she passed her hand softly by her cheeks –I’m very glad to see you’re okay. I was worried. -Boru lowered his view, like thinking about something. -You really care a lot about digimon for being a human, huh? –He asked. Katherine’s eyes widened at the statement of a thought that had never crossed her mind in an analytic manner so far. She actually did, digimon were so alive, so vivid to her: it was like she could feel what they were feeling, their emotions, their wills. -I… guess so –She replied, tilting her head. -That’s good. There’s a lot of people who don’t care about us, even digimon. –He explained.

-Meramon said you guys are not going to jail, okay? So don’t worry. –Katherine said, grabbing Boru’s hand. It was warm and fluffy. -So I heard from the boss. -She was here earlier? She really cares about you guys. -I know –The Psychemon giggled. –She just has some hard time admitting it. -Actions speak louder than words –The girl replied, in a low tone, with a sad expression, thinking about her parents and how many times they have told her ‘I love you’ when what she needed was an action that proved it. -Huh? –Boru tilted his head confused. -That means… -Katherine made a pause to look for the proper words. –It really doesn’t matter if a person tells you frequently they love you, but if they’re capable of demonstrating that with their actions. -Oh… -Boru said smiling. It seemed he had understood the concept. –I think… you should try to remember that –He added- And probably apply that to this situation.
-What do you mean? –The girl asked, without really catching what he meant.
-I’m sleepy now, Katherine, isn’t it? I’ll just call you Kath. –The creature hid under the blankets and turned to the other side. –I need to rest, ya’ know? –Katherine giggled softly. -You’re right. –The girl stood up and walked towards the door. When she placed her hand on the knob to turn it, Boru spoke again. -Just stop crying and… give the boss a chance, okay? –The girl turned immediately upon hearing this. -W-what do you mean? –She asked, a little confused. But a loud snoring sound overlapped her question. Had he fallen asleep so quickly? Or he was just trying to avoid her questioning? Katherine got out of the room, still feeling a little lost about the whole situation. The girl stopped for a second, trying to think what was next for her, but her attempt was interrupted as she heard a strong roaring that almost shook the ground. The girl quickly tried to identify where it was coming from. From there, she could see the door to Meramon’s office: it was definitely not coming from there. A long hallway extended to the back of the house. Next to it, the stairs going up to the room where she woke up were located: she discarded that room also from the places the sound could be coming from, so she decided to walk the hallway. After a few steps, the roaring could be heard again, and a door opened to her right. A small red-bird digimon entered the hallway from that recently opened door, she seemed to be one of the maids since she was wearing an apron and carrying some clean clothes.
-H-hi! –The girl bowed, greeting the parrot. –By chance do you know where’s that sound coming from? Sounds like a digimon suffering. –The girl immediately asked.
-Hi there Mrs. Jasso. –The bird knew her name, for the girl’s surprise. –I think the sound is coming from the backyard; you’ll reach it if you follow this hallway towards the end.
-Thank you so much! –The girl began to walk quickly towards a metal door with a little window that seemed to lead to the backyard. Upon opening it, she discovered an open slot, it seemed like a regular portion of the dessert but with some chairs, tables and a small fountain. It was some sort of grassless garden, which gave it a very peculiar style. Right in front of her, at the center of the backyard, there was Vermillimon, her huge friend she had met during her infiltration inside of Gururu Cave, and who had helped them escape the place and the sand pit that almost ate them. She felt incredibly glad to see him, but that feeling was replaced with nervousness as her sight caught a small digimon who was next to the gigantic dinosaur: it was Jazz, the Lopmon.

Right next to Jazz, there was also Koru. Katherine couldn’t tell how, but she could actually recognize the Psychemon brothers now for more than their voice. There was something in their eyes, their gaze was enough for the brunette to tell them apart. Koru was the one who threw that powerful attack where a multicolor wall formed by giant blocks crushed one Goblimon. At first, he seemed like the most skillful of the three and had been the one to definitely take the less amount of damage during the battle. The Psychemon turned and noticed the girl’s presence, waving at her to get closer. She couldn’t escape now, even though it wasn’t a very good feeling being close to Jazz right now.
-Hi there, Jazz, Koru. –The girl said approaching the three digimon, then turning at the huge creature with a smile. –Hi there, buddy. –Vermillimon immediately started smiling, and moved his head closer to Katherine, for her to pat it, which the girl did with a smile. -Wow, he seems to really like you. –Koru said, smirking. –He hasn’t been much talkative since this morning. –The Psychemon added. –Maybe he was scared? -It’s all good now, boy. –The girl kept patting his head, softly rubbing his horn after. -How are you feeling? –Jazz’s voice immediately caught the girl’s attention, with her turning towards the bunny. -I’m feeling good, thank you. –Vermillimon then let go a small growl, like he was happy. –What about you two? -We’re fine, that Goblimon didn’t stand a chance against me. –Koru replied before Jazz could. –The boss took a lot of punishment, though. –Still, some bruises could be seen over Jazz’s skin, even visible below her short fur. –But she’s so awesome she just needed one night to recover and now she’s up! –The zebra-like pelted digimon added. -Shut up. –Jazz said plainly, sitting on the ground and looking at Vermillimon. –Why is he so fond of you, anyway? –She asked. Katherine assumed referring to the huge creature and her. -Uhmmm… -Katherine frowned, tilting her head, trying to think about the reason. –Well, I did give him some water I had when I found him in front of the cave you guys were in. -Vermillimon growled softly and then made a high pitched sound after.
-I see… -Apparently, Jazz could understand perfectly what the digimon was saying, even when for Katherine those were only growls and moans. Judging by Koru’s look, he could also understand that language. –He says Fugamon rarely gave him any food or water, so he appreciates a lot what you did since he was very thirsty. –The bunny explained. –He’s also grateful at us for defeating him since he got to come here and have some food and good cares. -Oh, is that true? –Katherine giggled and hugged the Vermillimon. –I’m so glad we helped you somehow. –The girl said, authentically happy. –I’m sure Meramon wouldn’t have any trouble with you staying here from now on. –Vermillimon’s expression suddenly changed to a sad one, like he didn’t like the idea, growling sadly this time. -Huh? –The girl tilted her head and turned to Jazz waiting for a translation. –What’s wrong?
-She was telling us earlier she has a family; apparently, Fugamon found her and took her away from them, and she wants to go back. –Jazz explained, as the giant creature nodded. –But she’s too scared of going through the dessert alone to find them –Koru added, feeling notably sad about it. –We said we could go with her but she’s still scared. That’s why she was growling earlier when you found us. - Suddenly, Vermillimon smiled again, and started moving happily, letting go a couple of more growls. -Oh! She’s saying she would feel secure if you came with us, that way she would totally go. –Koru translated those last growls to the girl. Katherine couldn’t think how she would help in any way such a giant digimon feeling safe, but if she could assist in any way such a kind hearted digimon going back home, especially after all the help he provided for them to get out of the crumbling Gururu Cave, she would gladly do so.
-Well… in that case… -Katherine quickly glanced at Jazz. She didn’t feel at all like being around the bunny right now, but she couldn’t turn her back at Vermillimon. –I’ll go! –She finally stated.

-I was expecting you would say something like that. –Meramon approached the three digimon and Katherine, coming out of his house. Next to him, Roru, the last of the Psychemon brothers walked, carrying a couple of buckets. –When these two went by my office earlier today, they told me about this situation and I’ve been thinking how to take Vermillimon back home without him feeling endangered. –The fire digimon explained. –I’m glad to hear he’s willing to go there if he’s going with you. -Meanwhile, Roru approached Vermillimon, and started throwing huge pieces of what seemed to be meat from the buckets into the air, only to fall onto the creature’s open mouth, with him chewing and growling happily after each piece.
-He must have been very hungry. –Roru said, as he kept swinging the pieces of meat into the air. –Great to see you’re okay, by the way. –He added, looking at Jazz. Even though he had taken a bit of more punishment than Koru from the Goblimon he was facing, he seemed to be fine by now, a sight that made Katherine happy, of course –I’m glad to see you’re doing pretty well yourself too, Roru. –The creature blushed a little at the statement, kind of surprised probably by the fact that Katherine recognized which Psychemon brother he was. -Well in that case, once Vermillimon is done with lunch, you four should be on your way there. -The Meramon smiled at the group. -Where are we going exactly, Mr. Meramon? –Katherine asked, frowning. -Oh, please, just call me Roff. –He waved his arms dismissively. –I’m sorry I didn’t do a proper introduction before. –He apologized to then clear his throat. –Anyways, it’s widely known around Rustport that Vermillimon live in herds around the B Cave, some big cave located not too far from here, entering the desert from the opposite side Gururu Cave was at, but farther. –He explained in a serious tone. –It shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours getting there and coming back, though.
-In that case, since Vermillimon only cares about Katherine going, I don’t see necessary me or any of my men to go there. –Jazz promptly said. Meramon and Katherine frowned at the statement, while Vermillimon growled in dislike. -He’s saying he wants all four of us to go with him. –Koru said with a plain expression, Jazz looking rather unpleased about it. -I’m sorry, buddy, but if Jazz doesn’t want to go… -Katherine started, it was obvious Jazz didn’t want to spend any time around her, maybe just because she disliked her that much, so she wasn’t going to force her. Apparently, Roff was, though; he interrupted the girl. -But she is going. –He said in a serious tone of voice. -It’s the least she can do now that we’ve forgiven all of her band’s actions during the past year, right? –Roff then glanced at Jazz with a smile. Why was he forcing Jazz to go to this? -No! –Katherine said, getting sort of angry. –I don’t want her to go if she doesn’t want to… -You should obey too, Mrs. Jasso. –Roff spoke again. –You won’t turn your back on Vermillimon, right? And I say Jazz is going, so you’ve got no choice. -Katherine sighed at the statement, even though his reasons for pushing such scenery were unknown to her, there wasn’t much the brunette could do to avoid it; even when she did consider it was a better plan trying to convince Vermillimon of going just the two of them. Then again, she had no digimon partner or way of defending herself on the desert, and the giant creature didn’t seem fond of fightng, so that probably wasn’t the best plan either. -Okay… I guess so. –Jazz said, annoyed. –We’ll meet you at the front part of the house. –She added, walking towards the door inside the house, with Koru following her, and apparently referring to Katherine. –You come too once you’re done feeding Vermillimon, Roru. –She added, jumping to open the door and then going through it. Silence reigned across the backyard.
-Good luck, Mrs. Jasso. –Roff said, starting to walk back inside the house too. –I hope you and Jazz can work things out, because this is your last chance. -The girl just stood there silently as Roru kept throwing meat at Vermillimon. What did Roff mean? Was he talking about taking Vermillimon back? It didn’t seem like it.
About an hour and a half later, after the girl had breakfast herself (some delicious sort of 'meat waffles' one of Roff's maids served to her); Jazz, Vermillimon, Roru, Koru, and Katherine left Rustport, on their way to the B Cave, to take Vermillimon back home.

After 10 minutes walking, starting to count since the moment they left Rusport and began to go tour by the Folder Desert, the heat was starting to feel strong on Katherine’s head. She couldn’t then even picture how hot could this be for his partners in this adventures, especially the ones with fur since Vermillimon seemed to be pretty alright. -You were really made for this, weren’t you? –A suffocated Jazz addressed Vermillimon, while she laid on the creature’s back. A big smile went across the giant digimon’s face, who had no trouble withstanding the heat the desert offered that morning. It was a good thing Roff had offered Katherine to have breakfast before leaving since being hungry and this hot, couldn’t be good for her body. Vermillimon let go a couple of happy growls.
-He says that Vermillimons are supposed to be dessert travelers or even live near volcanos. –Roru said looking at Katherine, which she gladly appreciated since she was the only one who couldn’t understand the giant creature’s language. –So they’re kind of built for the heat.
-You actually mentioned something about traveling the world, while you were fighting Koemon, didn’t you? –Koru, who was also on the creature’s back looked down to address Katherine. -Huh? Me? –The battle was so fierce and so many emotions came out, the girl didn’t even remember what she had said, but it was true knowing more of such a vast world was something that she was deeply interested in since the moment she arrived. –Well… yes, I definitely would like that. –The girl replied smiling. -When we left the village where we were born, we had in mind traveling through the whole world. –Roru’s eyes were shinning as he walked next to Katherine. -Then we’ve got to Rustport and met the boss so we decided to stay here to help the baby digimon who needed it. I remember the boss also wanted to know much more of this world but…
-Shut up, Roru. –Jazz promptly interrupted the Psychemon, who turned at her confused and remained silent only for a couple of seconds until he started talking again. - Well, she decided to put that dream on hold to help the baby digimon of Rustport. –Roru continued, as Jazz’s expression turned into a much more annoyed one. –But I’m sure she would like to continue with such dream if she had someone to travel at her side and…-Jazz opened her eyes, standing up in Vermillimon’s back. -SHUT UP, RORU, WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE WHAT I WOULD OR WOULD NOT LIKE!? –She yelled, interrupting the Psychemon’s words. Vermillimon lowered his head, sort of scared. Silence reigned across the group.
-I-I’m sorry, boss, I… -Roru started in an apologetic manner. –Shut up. Let’s just get to the B. Cave as soon as possible, then we won't have to see that stupid Roff who forced us to come here ever again. –The bunny got off Vermillimon and quickly walked forward, leaving the group behind. They could still see her, but it was safe to assume she couldn’t hear them nor could they hear her. Katherine felt like she was right, Jazz didn't want to be even near her.
-Boss… -Roru whined.

-Let’s leave her alone for a while, Roru. –Koru kept walking slowly, next to Katherine. - What’s wrong with her? –Katherine tilted her head, sort of confused by the whole situation. -She’s just afraid of leaving us behind, I think –Roru replied, sighing. -But she’s more afraid of admitting that’s what she really wishes. –Koru outlined a sad smile over his face. -What she really wishes? –The brunette asked, still genuinely confused. -I guess she didn’t notice, huh? –Roru asked, giggling a little. -So it seems… -What are you talking about? I don’t understand… -The girl quickly moved her head from one Psychemon to another one. -The boss was moved from the determination you showed during your battle against Koemon, Katherinne. –Koru explained. –She won’t admit it, but the will you showed to know this world and prove there’s lots of good willing digimon living in it, really got to her. -What? My determination? But Roff said… -As I said, she won’t admit this, as she won’t admit she sees you as an opportunity to travel alongside you and fulfill the dream she once had of knowing this world to its fullest. Especially since she feels such an amazing connection towards you. –Koru interrupted. -Her… dream… -Katherine remembered Jazz mentioning that during their battle, stating she also had that dream of traveling the digital world and helping the good digimon there were around it. -She just feels too guilty about leaving us behind after she saved us when she found out on the street. –Roru’s voice tone was as saddest as ever.
-See, right now we can’t leave Rustport as a band, we still need to supervise all the job Roff is planning to do about helping the babies gets done. –Koru explained as the group kept walking. -And she knows this, she knows we can’t go with you two right now. –Roru added. –So she’s afraid.
Afraid of leaving everything she knows behind, afraid of jumping into a new life. It wasn’t only the fact that Katherine had just discovered Jazz actually wanted to be with her and felt a connection between them, but she also was going through something Katherine had already felt during her whole life: the desire of fulfilling a dream, of going against what everyone else wanted and doing what she really wished. The fact that she had decided to follow her instinct for once in her life and jumped into the Digital World for a new adventure was what brought her to this exact moment, to meeting Jazz and helping the band. Jazz just needed that little push to go and chase her dreams, of course. But the girl didn’t fail at understanding how she felt about leaving everyone behind, after all, these Psychemon were her only family. What was next, then? Was she supposed to convince Jazz about what she really wanted? She couldn’t force her to come with her if her heart wasn’t in the right place.
In any case, the girl concluded that telling the Psychemons the truth was the best thing to do right now.

Feeling she could truly trust the Psychemon brothers, Katherine decided to not hide what she was feeling since yesterday anymore.
-I think… Jazz is my digimon partner. –Katherine said in a low tone, blushing a little and looking away from Koru and Roru. There, she said it. - YOUR WHAT!? –Koru yelled out of pure impression. His brother, who was truly much more lost about the concept, simply stared at Katherine and tilted his head, to then turn at Koru, pretty confused. -What’s that? What’s she talking about, Koru? –The digimon scratched his head. -Your d-d-digimon partner!? – Koru asked in disbelief. –So you’re… The boss’ tamer!? - Sssshhh! She’s going to hear you! –Katherine placed her index finger over her mouth. Having such big ears, the girl assumed Jazz could hear something like that yelling even through the distance. -Brother, what’s a ‘tamer’? and what’s that thing about being a digimon partner? –Roru climbed up Vermillimon’s tail to get to the creature’s back, poking Koru for him to explain. -Roru… -Koru sighed. –Don’t you remember? We’ve seen some humans partnered with digimon around Rustport already. –He then looked for another example, seeing that his brother was missing the idea. –Let’s see… yes! Like that girl with the two digimon inside the hideout! Remember her? The one who beat Fugamon.
Roru eyes widened as he had begun to understand the situation. –Oooh, right right! Like those digimon that are always with a human and they have this gadget… -A digivice. –Katherine added. -…That makes them obtain great powers and even evolve! –Roru said with a smile, finally catching up the idea. His expression then turned to a horrified one. –WHAT!? THE BOSS IS HER DIGIMON PARTNER!? –The Psychemon fell off Vermillimon’s back straight into the sand. -I told you to be quiet! –Katherine said intensively in a low tone. -How sure are you about this, Katherine? –Koru asked, looking at the girl. While Roru tried to take his body off the sand. -I don’t know if I can explain it, but I feel this huge connection between her and me. I feel like I came to this world to know her. –The girl remained quiet for a while, without the others saying anything. –I also want her to be happy, to help her fulfill her dreams as I can and to protect her. I can’t explain why I just… -The girl shrugged with shyness expression -I just do. –The girl said, looking down, while the group kept walking. Vermillimon broke the silence generated after Katherine’s words, growling in happiness.
-That’s… -Koru was about to start talking when he was interrupted by Jazz’s voice, who was now in front of them. -Why are you so quiet? –She asked, raising an eyebrow. Apparently, she had stopped walking at some point, and the group had now reached her. –Look. –The bunny said pointing at something in front of them. –That’s the B. Cave, right there. –A cave, that seemed more like a mountain in the middle of the desert with a big hole up front and a spiky upper part could be seen in the distance. The confirmation of it being the B. Cave shortly came when Vermillimon started jumping and stomping, growling loudly with a happy expression on his face. –He wants us to go up! –Roru translated. Katherine, Roru, and Jazz climbed up the creature’s back.
-Hold on tight. –Jazz said, grabbing the black armored skin of the creature, everyone else doing the same. When everyone was ready, Vermillimon started running at full speed towards the cave, everyone yelling from the rush at the same time. In a couple of minutes, they have finally reached the B. Cave.

While the group got closer to the cave, a bunch of Vermillimon could be seen around the entrance, laughing, running around and taking the sun. Even though due to the rush, Katherine couldn’t see the smile on their friend’s face, his movements and the excitement of his running, definitely denoted happiness and fulfillment. He was back, he was finally at home. The group of Vermillimon noticed the group’s presence and growled pointing at the incoming partner with their heads. Once they were close enough, their ride stopped, in front of his siblings. They all looked at the arriving Vermillimon pretty confused, until he growled, apparently announcing who he was. After a second of silence, the group started growling in happiness, running towards their friend. They all looked pretty much the same, although, just like with the Psychemon brothers, Katherine could tell them apart by looking into their eyes. Katherine was starting to notice how their expressions, the glow in their eyes or even the color were elements that helped the girl differentiate some digimon who belonged to the same species.
-Huh? They’re saying… -Jazz tilted her head, then lowering her gaze towards Vermillimon. – Your name is Andrea!? –She asked. –Why didn’t you tell us? –Andrea growled, replying to the bunny, while she looked around at all of his friends,he seemed authentically happy. –Apparently, he had forgotten… -The bunny translated. How long could have this Vermillimon been away from his family to have even forgotten the name he used to port when they lived together? What Fugamon had done was truly unforgivable. The group hopped down from the Vermillimon, while he growled and spoke to his friends.
-He seems so happy. –The girl smiled at the scene. The long walk under the sun had truly been worth it, Andrea was happy and finally reunited with his friends. Even though she couldn’t understand what they were saying, judging by their expression and growls, they seemed to be catching up. The group of Vermillimon suddenly stopped communicating, something had caught their attention; everyone, including Andrea, turned as some stomping that could be heard in the distance. More Vermillimon; a group of some more of the dinosaur digimon seemed to be approaching the scene. At first, the group of bandits and Katherine smiled again, it seemed like more friends had come to welcome Andrea. Nevertheless, the looks on Andrea and the other Vermillimons weren’t of joy, but more like concern. Who could be coming who had the group worried like that? Andrea let go a low growl, denoting preoccupation.
-Lava? –Koru asked in a low tone, tilting his head. Their movements were much more aggressive, they stomped harder on the ground and they lifted much more sand when running. Being closer to the group, but still at around 100 meters, they stopped. It was a group of 5 Vermillimon, including a Vermillimon slightly bigger than Andrea and the rest standing in the middle; he had a set of different scars on his horn, a much more mature expression. The creature growled loudly, making the ground a shake; some Vermillimon around Andrea closed their eyes due to the loudness of his roar. Was this Lava? He truly was a scary Vermillimon. He then growled again, this time looking straight at Andrea.
-How dare you to come back here, Andrea? Your betrayal is unforgivable. –Roru translated slowly, looking at the creature.

Andrea growled sadly, looking at Lava. Betrayal? Katherine couldn’t understand what was going on, only reaching the conclusion these two Vermillimon had some sort of past. Lava growled again, angrily, acquiring a fighting stance. Every Vermillimon around Andrea growled worried, trying to stop whatever was about to happen, while the Vermillimon from Lava’s group roared. -What’s going on!? –Katherine asked, shaking her head looking at the Psychemons and Jazz -Lava says Andrea is mocking the tribe by showing his face again here. –Koru explained, also looking worried by the situation. -The Vermillimons around the tribe are trying to speak with Lava, but nor he or his friends will hear what they’ve got to say, so this could turn ugly. –Roru added. Jazz frowned, just to add something else. –Some of the Vermillimons around Andrea say they’re not going to let Lava expel Andrea from the tribe. -The stomping and roaring got louder from each side, except for Andrea, who still seemed like he was trying to talk to Lava, but the former wouldn’t listen. -No, wait! There has to be a way of settle this. –Katherine tried to stop the Vermillimon around Andrea, who seemed willing to fight the ones on Lava’s side, once their attempts of talking had been ignored. –We need to… -Katherine’s voice couldn’t be heard anymore, the roaring had gotten too strong, and some Vermillimon were already hitting their paws into the ground, like wild animals about to attack. -Come on! Help me stop them! –The girl turned at the Psychemons and Jazz, desperately. The group obeyed, and got closer to the Vermillimon, yelling them to stop. -Stop this already! I’m sure there’s a way! –Frustration could be seen on the bandits face, as the giant creatures ignored them too. Even further, the dust and sand that raised from stomping their paws on the ground only made difficult for the group to see, even getting Katherine to cough. Katherine could still see the figures of the giant dinosaurs, roaring and getting ready to attack. Her attempts were being completely futile, even though Andrea also seemed to be roaring for them to stop. Before the bandits or Katherine could do anything else, Vermillimons from each side started running towards the other group, ready to clash at the center. The movement of the Vermillimon around her, forced Katherine and the others to step back, to avoid being crushed by their gigantic paws. The girl could only look as the Vermillimon ran at full speed toward each other to collide. How had it come to this? What could possibly Andrea had done to enrage Lava’s group this much? Couldn’t this be settled somehow else? -STOP THIS RIGHT NOW!!!
Right when the Vermillimon were about to clash in a vicious fight, a deep and dark voice sounded across the place. It roared so hard it made Katherine and the bandits stumble to the ground from the shaking. Right after, what Katherine could only identify as a thunderbolt due to the aggressive way it landed and how it made the ground shake, stroke in front of the two groups of Vermillimon about to crash, making them stop immediately. A huge smoke curtain rose from the impact and sand flew everywhere. Katherine covered her face with her arms to protect herself from the smoke and sand in the air. From the little she could see, the Vermillimon had stopped, all staring silently at the place where the lightning stroke. Silence reigned across the front side of the B. Cave. As the smoke started to fade, Katherine managed to put her arms down. The figure of a serpent-like creature could be seen, levitating between the two groups of Vermillimon that were about to clash, right where the lighting landed. More smoke dissipated and more from the creature could be seen. He had 6 wings and some sort of silver mask around his head, two human-like strong and thick arms with blue and red armbands, one on each side. He had long horns over his silver mask. The fading sand curtain, let see he was of a bright golden color, with a silver design going up the front part of his serpent body. Whoever this creature was, he seemed extremely powerful, and the Vermillimons had much respect for him.

-Lord… Goddramon…
Even when Roff was some sort of authority around Rustport, Jazz and the Psychemons didn’t seem to show much respect for him, they answered to no one’s orders so for Katherine, it was only logical they weren’t fond of following or respecting any digimon in particular. This was the reason why the girl was so surprised to see the bandits not only completely amazed at the appearance of this creature, but also referring to him as ‘Lord’. Where the hell did this digimon come from? Did he appear from that lighting that stroke? What kind of digimon was this? Questions just kept flooding in Katherine’s head, while the girl could only look amazed at the whole scenario, even afraid to speak.
-I’m ending this battle right now. –The creature finally broke the silence with his statement. –Vermillimon are one of the most pacific tribes we have got along the Western Flatlands, the western region of this world. And I won’t allow that to change, especially me being a native from this tribe. –He added firmly. Katherine, recovering her speak, turned at Jazz and the others. -Who… is him?
-That’s Lord Goddramon, he’s an ancient deity who protects this desert. He's said to take care of all of us. Very few had seen him before. –Jazz answered. –I’ve heard rumors about him coming from one of the different tribes located in the desert but didn’t imagine he came from the Vermillimon tribe. –Koru added, still looking surprised at the digimon. –He goes by the name of ‘Reiki’, but we all call him Lord Goddramon.
So he was a good digimon. Katherine smiled at the answers given by her group and with the fear she previously felt having partially left her body, she started running towards the creature.
-Katherine, wait! –Koru tried to stop the girl, but it was too late. -Is Lord Goddramon willing to talk to a human? -Thank you very much, Sir! –The girl yelled running, once she was closer to him; then stopping next to the creature. –I tried to stop them but they just wouldn’t listen! The creature turned at her. He was truly imposing, only by his looks it was easy to tell he was insanely powerful; the aura he released was clearly overwhelming. Katherine got a little scared again. There was some brief silence between the two. Jazz approached the scene running too, with Koru and Roru behind. For a second, Jazz thought about apologizing to Reiki for letting Katherine address him like that, but that seemed against her own principles, since a good willing deity shouldn’t get angry about being addressed by a human, so she only remained silent, looking at the digimon.
-Oh… -Reiki broke the silence like he had been analyzing something about Katherine before replying. –I know, miss, I saw you try. I appreciate it. –He said, in a much kinder tone than the one he was using to address the Vermillimons earlier, but with the same deep voice. –You actually should be ashamed. –He then said, turning at the Vermillimons again. –You could’ve hurt this lady, her digimon partner, and those Psychemon with your fighting. –It took Katherine a while to realize what this digimon had just said. Had he been looking at her? From how long? How did he know Jazz was her partner? The Vermillimon lowered their heads ashamed, growling softly.
-They’re apologizing for their attitude… -Koru translated for Katherine, while Jazz’s eyes were wide open over Reiki. She had noticed what he had said too. -Oh, that’s right. –The Goddramon softly raised his left arm, placing his hand above Katherine’s head. At first, the girl got a little scared, but then she just stood still, staring at some golden light coming out the creature’s hand, that softly swirled around her body. She didn’t feel anything special for a second.
-I’m very sorry about it, Lord Goddramon, we were just trying to protect our leader. –Katherine heard a voice, not far from her. She noticed one of the Vermillimon from Andrea’s side was addressing Goddramon, but she couldn’t hear the growling anymore, instead, she heard a soft, delicate voice speaking her own language. She could perfectly understand it. The girl turned at Reiki, her eyes widened.
-W-what did you do? –The girl asked, stunned. -I saw you couldn’t understand what the Vermillimon were saying, so I lend you the power to do so. –He replied calmly. The girl stared dumbfounded at the Vermillimon, who she can know perfectly understand, like any other digimon. No doubt Reiki the Goddramon was truly something else. The girl just smiled at what had just happened. Being able to understand Andrea and everyone else at the B. Cave was something amazing, just based on the fact that meant she could know so much more about them and how they thought. -Thank you so much! –The girl jumped to hug the deity but was softly stopped mid-air, like some mystic force was handling her body, slowly placing her back on the ground. -I-I’m sorry, miss. -Reiki cleared his throat. –I’m not good with physical showings of affection.
Katherine just giggled at his reaction.

-Lava, Andrea, come here right now. –Reiki called the two Vermillimon to gather around him. They both accepted, Andrea still with a worried expression and Lava still sort of angry. They both seemed to have a lot of respect for the entity too. -I’m sorry for what happened, Lord Goddramon, I understand fighting between brothers is wrong. –Lava began. –We were just coming back from gathering supplies for the cave, when we saw Andrea had returned, after leaving us for so long, and I got upset.
-I didn’t leave you! –Andrea replied, yelling. -Of course you did! You left us all behind! –Lava replied, but Goddramon stopped him. –Let Andrea speak, Lava. -I was kidnapped by Fugamon and his band! I didn’t want to be there! –Andrea seemed very upset. -You’re a traitor! You can’t tell me that, being a Vermillimon, during two years you didn’t have the chance of running away and coming back here! -Lava stomped on the ground, angrily. Two years? Katherine and the group where shocked at such revelation. Had Andrea been gone for two whole years? -I… I… -Andrea was lost for words, why? What Lava was saying made sense, he was huge, much bigger than Fugamon and the rest, they probably couldn’t have stopped him if he tried to run away, but why didn’t he? -You’re a traitor! And you decide to come back today? Of all days? You don’t care about us!-Today? What was Lava talking about? Katherine turned at Jazz and the Psychemons. –What is he talking about? What happens today? –They all shrugged, seemingly having no idea. -Well, that’s enough! I challenge you, Andrea...! –Lava yelled to his sibling, moving his head aggressively. -No! Don’t do that! –Andrea apparently tried to stop him from finishing the sentence, looking scared. -...to a Vulcano Duel. –Lava finished on a plain, dark tone. Andrea lowered his head, frustrated. Katherine thought about asking the bandits what a ‘Vulcano Duel’ was, but they also seemed pretty lost at whatever was going on.
The other Vermillimon, though, started mumbling between them. –A Vulcano Duel? Between Lava and Andrea? –That can’t be! –How could it end like this? Reiki sighed, turning to Andrea. –You must follow the traditions of the Vermillimon Tribe, Andrea, you can’t get away of this. –The Goddramon said, plainly. -I… I know… -Andrea replied, walking away from Reiki and the group, taking a certain distance forward. Lava followed him. The rest of the Vermillimon started moving too. -Lord Goddramon! What’s going on? I don’t understand, what’s a Vulcano Duel? –Katherine kept looking at the Vermillimon move, both the ones that were already there and welcomed Andrea and the ones that arrived alongside Lava. -It’s a very antique tradition the Vermillimon Tribe has held for generations. It consists mainly in a fight between the leader of the tribe and any of the other members. The regular member challenges the leader to a duel, and whoever loses, will be expelled from the tribe. –Reiki explained with a worried countenance –If the challenger wins, he will become the new leader of the tribe. –He finished his explanation. -Wait… -Katherine eyes widened, as well as Jazz and the Psychemon's, who just stared at Reiki, completely dumbfounded. They had tied ends; if Lava was challenging Andrea then… –Andrea is the current leader of the Vermillimon tribe!? –They all asked at the same time. This day had been one full of surprises, no doubt.

-There are only three ways of becoming the leader of the Vermillimon tribe. –Reiki continued explaining. –The first is being willingly selected by the active leader to become the new leader. –The entity looked at Andrea, as he prepared for the Vulcano Duel. –That’s how Andrea became the leader, the former leader, a Vermillimon named Crateon named him before dying. Lots of Vermillimon considered Andrea was too young, he had recently evolved into a Vermillimon and was not prepared for such responsibility. Lots of Vermillimon thought the right pick was Lava, but he completely supported Andrea’s choosing and was perfectly okay with it. -I suppose a Vulcano Duel is the second way of becoming a leader… -Jazz frowned, looking at how the Vermillimon were starting to form a circle around Andrea and Lava, who were standing in front of each other, prepared to battle. -That’s right. As I mentioned, the winner becomes or stays as the leader. –Reiki nodded. –The third way is when the active leader has been away from the tribe for two years straight. Then, the members will vote for a new leader. This is where it gets complicated. –The Goddramon lowered his view, straight to the ground. –Tomorrow would have been two years since Andrea disappeared from the tribe. So elections were going to be held for a new leader, but she decided to come back today. -Katherine placed her hand on her mouth with a blank stare. –Talk about bad timing… -She mumbled.
-I’m sure Andrea didn’t know about this, Lord Goddramon! –Koru quickly stated, looking at the dragon digimon. -I am sure she didn’t, too –Reiki replied. –But that doesn’t matter, you can’t blame Lava for feeling betrayed. He trusted in Andrea for him being the new leader, even when everyone thought he wasn’t prepared, and then he disappeared for two years, leaving the tribe without a leader for a long time. –Reiki crossed his arms, something about his aura felt gloom and sad. -And now he suddenly comes back when he’s about to stop being the leader and they finally were able to have a new one. -You can’t blame Lava, you really can’t. –Jazz was right, Lava had every right to feel betrayed, but it wasn’t Andrea’s fault either, he just wanted to come back with his family, he didn’t seem to care about being the leader. -Lord Goddramon! –Katherine turned to Reiki again. –Can’t this be settled somehow else? I’m sure they could reach an agreement, just clear everything up! -Trust me, I’m not a fan of violence either, Mrs. Katherine. –Reiki replied. –But a Vulcano Duel can only end when one of the participants can’t keep fighting, it’s an ancient tradition that must be respected. –The Vermillimon forming the circle stomped on the ground at the same time, roaring. Suddenly, streams of lava started coming out from holes made on the sand. It didn’t seem like there was lava under the desert, but more like Vermillimons were capable of doing something that amazing. The girl stared scared at the scenario; this was serious, and every Vermillimon knew it. –I also think, sometimes, the best way of really understanding someone else’s feelings is through a true and fair square.
