Rough Beginnings [Haru+Tawna]

After the tragic stint at the library, Dr. Mikemon didn't think things could get any more bizarre.
He should have known better. Right now, Mikemon could hear the sounds of a portal being opened nearby, and the sounds of what seemed to be peaceful birds off in the distance, just after he'd been instructed to walk forward. However, Mikemon could only guess where he was: right now, he was blindfolded, and blindly trusting the request of Dr. Cassandra Cross to follow-up on her work with a recent patient.
"Won't be much longer. Just straight from here. When you hear the door close behind you, you can take off the visor."
"... Understood." Just what had Cas gotten herself into, to be delved this deep into secrecy? The doctor didn't question it: he simply followed instructions, feeling the smooth concrete below turn to carpet, then to tile as he made his way into the last room. Once he finally heard the door click behind him, the doctor gave out a sigh, reaching up to pull the blindfold off of his head. The room he found himself in?
Well, it was clean. Light was provided both by an overhead light, as well as a high-up window, too tall for him to make out the outside. The room was clearly meant for medical work, both a sink and a small workstation visible to his left, with a data monitor and a bed against the right wall. Here - most likely - would be where he saw Tawna.
Tawna - and the egg. "... Holy hell..." Cassandra wasn't kidding. This all from that one Meicoomon in the Dark Area? Honestly, Mikemon didn't know what to say, other than that one utterance -
- ... No. No, he had a job to do. With one deep breath, he'd move to the side of that bed, and give a short nod over to Tawna.
"... Been through the worst of it, haven't you." His tone was level - but one that Tawna would have been familiar with, as close as the two had been.

This felt like perhaps the longest week in her life. They say time heals all wounds, but... why did she not feel much better? At the least she was not bawling her eyes out now... just softly tearing up whenever it was time to sleep, and she been doing a lot of sleeping recently.
For Tawna, it was almost agonizing stewing in her own suffering here at Metal Drive's base. Her own strength was recovering from the ordeal of being brought to the brink of death, but her heart was still mangled beyond repair. Sure her body no longer ached, but her soul was left in an empty void where there was no warmth to be had. It wasn't that Doctor Cas and her cohorts weren't bad people, but... no one compared to whom she had lost.
Even as the Meicoomon held that white silver-y white egg with her neck tendrils close to her, feeling that soft and radiant life within... she felt lonely. More so than ever before. It was hard to understand why... She used to be alone all her life before Haru, so she was just back to square one. Why did it have to hurt so much now though?
It was awful not knowing whether or not this egg really was her as well... the anticipation was agonizing, so as the fear that this was not the person that once gave her a purpose... a life in fact.
150 hours. It has been 150 hours she has been held in captivity here, both for her own good and that of the egg... To say that her senses were rather numb was an understatement. Faced towards the wall her bed was by, it would take a moment for Tawna to recognize from the smell of the new visitor of her abode that this was not one of the regulars... The orange maine coon tilted herself towards the doors to her room, her emerald eyes locking with that of Mikemon's own amber ones.
"... I.. I didn't expect to see you here." the Meicoomon spoke meekly, her eyes widened and her breath slow. She had been caught offguard, if primarily since the feline doctor was the first person she considered a dear friend she has seen since that dreadful day. All contact with the field club has been basically nonexistent, so this came as a surprise. Tawna broke into a cold sweat as she wrapped her arms around the egg in her lap, her eyes darting back and forth between it and the doctor. "... H-How much do you know? Is... Is Naoko okay? Titania?"
Mikemon was perhaps one of the only other people she trusted nearly as much as Haru. There was... just so much she could relate to him, even if they both had lived vastly different lives and had very different experience levels.

There was no doubt, Tawna looked like she was pulled through the wringer and back out again. She didn't even try to hide the tear stains in her fur, and that uncharacteristic meek tone spoke an entire novel on its own.
"Well, it hasn't been easy." Giving a rather level response to her first comment, he folded that blindfold and tossed it on an end table, his eyes focused more on Tawna's data at the moment. She'd been battered - and even noticeably weakened - from her encounter with Hunter, but at the very least, she seemed 'stable', per Meicoomon standards. There was no pressing issue, at least at a first glance, that the doctor had to address.
The emotional damage, though? That was going to be far harder to work through. His ear flicked at that question, Mikemon gave a blink. "... Naoko and Titania, they're fine. Titania's a bit roughed up, but nothing that will stick." As for the other half of that question? He gave a pause.
He bit his lip. And met her eye to eye.
"Cassandra told me everything."
There was nothing Tawna needed to hide from him, those words thinly veiling the emotional well that was budding underneath. However, he forced himself to stay level. Though he dared not to touch or approach the egg, not yet, he reached out and rested a paw on Tawna's shoulder, just to give her a bit of a physical reminder that she wasn't alone. "Cassandra brought me here to check on your data, as well as the egg. Its been a week, so you two should be relatively stable - there's just a few key things I need to check for."
"I came for that, of course... but not for Cassandra's sake." He gave a nod towards Tawna: "I know its hard. I need you to just work with me, through the next twenty, thirty minutes or so, alright?"

The way that the Meicoomon took a breath and exhaled was a sign of the hardship she had been through recently, she staring back at Mikemon with tired eyes that only could tell a chapter of the pain the Champion level had been experiencing emotionally. Even knowing that Haru's sister and their partner being fine didn't do much to give her relief, especially knowing now that Mikemon knew everything that had transpired. It... It honestly hurt knowing he had to learn about it, as who could have expected this? "... Does anyone else in the club know? I... I know Naoko does, but thats it." she softly spoke, flinching slightly as the doctor reached for her shoulder.
What confidence this warrior may have once had would have been immediately apparent to the doctor as absent... This was a look into what was Tawna's most primal, core state... an innocent soul that has been through unspeakable amounts of suffering and hardened to the harsh world around her. That hard shell though had been shattered, leaving her an emotional mess.
Still, the doctor's touch... it was gentle, almost comforting to have. She could feel that this wasn't easy for him either, but it did well to remind her that this world didn't revolve around her or Haru... They were all intertwined like a spider's web, in a manner that was not easily separated. The despair in her eyes seemed to fade briefly as she gave a gentle nod to the doctor, she turning herself around as she placed the egg by her side... never letting it out of her reach. "... Cassandra said it was the only way. ... Humans don't come back like we do, do they?" she asked, though she in her heart understood the answer.
It was a gambit for a lost life, but at the cost of one's humanity.

"No... no, just myself, Titania, and Naoko. Cassandra told me to keep this a strict secret - though probably for different reasons than you're hoping."
That aside, it was clear that Tawna was hurt. This was the 'Tawna' that the Maine Coon hid from the rest of the world, the Tawna that Mikemon had seen in its purest form only once before, when the two shared a core... through Haru's own belief in the pair. Their data had been so intertwined, that Tawna's distress, her agony, resonated even in his own core. Mikemon did not want to see Tawna like this, and he certainly did not want to see Haru 'reduced' to such a state. But at the very least?
They had each-other. The Meicoomon opened herself up to trust the doctor enough to turn her attention to him, as the doctor drew a red crystal into his hand. Those words hit Mikemon's ears, the fellow cat shaking his head.
"Humans are mortal." Even going this far was a crime against the natural order - but at this point, the defiance was the only thing keeping anyone here afloat. "Stay calm, take a deep breath, and count back from ten." Drawing that crystal between them, Mikemon's eyes narrowed to near pinpricks as he focused through - peering not just into Tawna's data, but layers and layers deep, to see the damaged state that she had been left in. Like this, the doctor could hardly speak - in fact, he seemed almost motionless, frozen in place.
Staring beyond, trying to piece line and line of code together... eventually, he'd close his eyes, a strained tear escaping his left duct, produced simply from the strain.
"... Suffice to say, your data structure has... weakened." Mikemon gave a low sigh, shaking his head. "You're stable - you're not liable to simply 'fall apart' on me like Cassandra feared - but I can see the deep wound deep through your data. Your core has largely recovered, but..."
What was the best way to put it?
"You'll be... about two-thirds or three-fourths as strong as you were before."

Tawna gave Mikemon a solemn nod as she was informed of the state of the situation... So it was still a secret. The question though that burned at her mind was how the others would react. How would they react learning that their friend died and was possibly raised from the dead in a manner that could only be described as "playing god". It was not a pleasant thought to imagine, but it was one that Tawna knew there was no point to arguing against. A drop of water slid from her eye as she tilted her head down at the mention of human mortality... just like she thought. "... But this... this means she can come back. She won't be human anymore... She'll be a Digimon, like you and me." Tawna briefly spoke, though her tone was not an excited one.
Humans were flawed creatures, but Digimon in ways infinitely more so. The fact that in ways, Haru might never be the same... it did scare her. She softly took a breath of air as she remained still, allowing the doctor to scan her freely... Not that she wouldn't notice some of his body language as he did this, a clear sign there was something array.
"... I am not surprised. That Meicoomon took almost all of my data, and from what I understand... Cassandra had to more or less try to cobble whatever could be afforded to be donored back to me to keep my core from falling apart entirely." Tawna replied at the status report...
So it was true. She had felt weaker... but she was not sure if it had been just from exhaustion or having nearly died. The point was made clear to her at least though. "... I can only assume that much of that strength went towards creating this egg. What was left of the Meicoomon's data was used to make it." she spoke, only having a partial understanding of the process. The Hunter had... absorbed her partner's data, so the only option was to salvage that data, at least in one form. It wasn't what Tawna would have wanted, but it was what she got...
Damaged data and a loss of power aside, Tawna was ultimately more concerned with the safety of the egg itself... provided it really WAS Haru. The way the egg stood still, yet the feeling that there was a life incubating inside... it offered a shred of hope to Tawna. Whar mattered now though was if she'll be able to defend herself and Haru. "Do you think I will be able to Digivolve still...?" Tawna briefly asked as she stretched a tendril by the drawer near the bed... pulling out a familiar, but now clearly defunct D-Arc from its contents. One of the only things that was able to be salvaged back there... It was a grim reminder of her failure as a partner. "... Does this mean... I'm not an aato?"

"... She can come back, yes. But even after she hatches, until she gains a proper sense of self? Well, Haru will be a Digimon 'infant'." Mikemon was careful to pick his words, describing the most likely scenario for Haru's revival. Perhaps it would pan out somewhat different than this, but this was the reality that made the most sense to the cat.
Thankfully, it also wasn't the most depressing possibility - where this Meicoomon simply didn't remember who or what Haru was at all. Leaving that thought at the doorstep - saying it might have completely collapsed Tawna's heart - he proceeded with Tawna's diagnosis.
"Honestly," the doctor interrupted, "I'm surprised Cassandra did as good a job as she has. She was a vet in the human world, and a skilled field medic - but how quick she picked up Digital Medicine is borderline insane." His tone wasn't one of admiration, actually, but one of concern. Just how far was this world going to strain those closest to him? He simply gave a nod to the mention of the egg...
... Though two more questions were made. One about Tawna's ability to Digivolve, and the other, about the D-Arc and her species. "You'll be able to Digivolve, yes, but the feeling will be quite different... and no, you're not an Aato." Taking a look at that D-Arc, the cat shook his head: "Deep-data operations like that often remove what makes a core unique. Once that repair started, your connection to the D-Arc was taken from you. But... its a blessing. If that hadn't changed..."
Then Tawna wouldn't be alive. Shaking that thought away, Mikemon drew the crystal once more, and this time, scanned on the egg - something he held for just as long as he did on the Meicoomon proper.
"... Its a YukimiBotamon egg." His tone was flat, complete, and largely unconcerned, as he pulled the 'lens' away. "Healthy. Processing well, and very warm. In a week or two, it will hatch."
In the silence that followed, the Mikemon gave a low sigh out... and gently moved to curl one of his paws around Tawna's own.

Tawna understood that this process would not be a smooth transition... This after all was the reformatting of a human's entire being into Digimon data. Memories and even the soul may persist, but would their body be able to utilize them properly? Tawna tried to remember her own infanthood... Not just being reverted back to an egg, but her ACTUAL first life... before everything went to shit. The truth was, she didn't remember a thing... and that made it difficult for her to understand what it might be like for Haru at first. "... I'll do my best to help her. She is the first person I could say without a doubt that genuinely cared about me, and if it weren't for her... Maybe I would have been just another monster driven by hunger and instinct." Tawna solemnly spoke. Human or not, she'd vow to protect Haru with her life... at least better this time.
The Meicoomon frowned at the mention of Cassandra's name. She wasn't a fool... She had her suspicions that there were reasons as to why that Meicoomon was even in that sector as a guardian... but she dared not say it to the witch doctor's face. Like it or not, Tawna respected Cassandra and was in their eternal debt. "She's a brilliant woman... Hard to believe she is even human at times. She scares me more than her own partners, and I've seen them in action." the Meicoomon remarked, not at all exaggerating her opinions of the short woman. Cassandra was the type of person Tawna was glad that she was not an enemy of... That woman was a rose with deadly thorns.
Her suspicions were confirmed at least... She was no longer bonded to a human. There wasn't one to bond with after all. If anything, it'd be just like her time before Haru... Before she loaded Haru's original destined partner. "... Its going to be odd having to rely on my own power once more.. I feel like I am missing a part of me now, in more ways than one." the Champion level murmurred, though soon silenced at the diagnosis of the egg.
A YukumiBotamon. Haru was to be reborn as a YukumiBotamon... the same type of Fresh level that she and the doctor had. Honestly, she wasn't surprised... That Meicoomon probably had the same Fresh level too, and this egg WAS mostly their data. Tawna scooched over some to allow the doctor to sit down beside her if he wished,.she clutching their paw as well. "... I hate waiting. Haru always said I was the impatient type... We spent like a week together just teaching me how to learn how to read clocks because I could never tell the time." the Meicoomon chuckled dryly, though their eyes grew moist once more.
She really was impatient... she wanted to see Haru again. It didn't matter if they were no longer human, she just wanted to be able to share Haru with all their friends again.

Of course Tawna would do her best, but for something like a YukimiBotamon? Well, perhaps that would be beyond Tawna's own area of expertise. Returning a small smile, Mikemon gave a nod: "I'll help how I can. There's still a lot I have from when I was raising Syre - knowing what to do with a fresh level isn't all that simple, at times." If nothing else, Tawna had at least one solid ally through this ordeal.
An ally that, unlike Cassandra, wasn't hiding behind smoke and mirrors at the moment. As Tawna spoke of her, the cat gave a low sigh. "... She's a good doctor. I trust her, even if she's going through something like this." That was all the cat was going to add to something like that - giving just a nod to both this, and to Tawna having to rely on her own power. Mikemon had experience in that front, as well.
But as for the egg? Sitting down carefully next to Tawna, and holding hands with his DNA partner, Dr. Mikemon kept her ears open for his dear friend. At this point in her life, the Meicoomon probably felt more alone than she had ever felt before. Letting Tawna hold on for as long as she'd like, Mikemon gave a small smile, returning Haru's chuckle. "I remember her lending me a book or two to help with reading Japanese. Never really had the chance to get around to them, but..."
He gave his own sigh. Even just through that small contact, he could feel just how tense, just how imatient Tawna was in all of this. But really, more than anything else, he could feel that sheer sadness that she had pent up in her heart.
"... But I'll stay for as long as you need." Those last words were said with a bit of a softer tone - and he'd rest an arm right over Tawna's shoulder.

Tawna wasn't one to like admitting to her own faults, but she had to admit that that perhaps the doctor had a point that he was considerably more experienced raising... well, infant Digimon. Her ears tilted down as she gave a solemn nod, softly gesturing her paw over the egg. "I suppose... I never considered that Haru wouldn't completely be herself once she hatched." she spoke as she took a deep breath... finding it a bizarre idea in general. "Mikemon? What was it like raising a newborn Digimon? I mean... you are a father after all." she awkwardly asked, briefly scratching the back of her head.
She was a damned good fighter, but it was all she knew... Stuff like this? Haru would have known what to do.
The Champion level closed her eyes, her tears having since ran dry. There was so much about all of this that confused her. Why did this have to happen? Why did good people need to be hurt? It just was not fair... If she had Haru by her side, she would have just had to turn to them and ask why, but Haru wasn't here right now. "Humans are really bizarre creatures. You wouldn't think much of them at a glance, but there is something about them that is marvelous despite their physical weakness." she mused remembering her own personal confusion as to what drove Haru to push onward despite the danger that faced her. "Do... you think that this will change her, Mikemon? I... I am not sure what to think. Would it be still her?"
The Meicoomon leaned towards Mikemon as she rested her head on his shoulder... He wasn't Haru, but he was a wonderful substitute for what she was missing deep down. She took another breath as she gazed into his eyes, a sorrowful but calm look on her face. "... Thank you. I-I don't want to take too much of your time though. Don't worry about me too much... I'll be fine. Eventually.

"Of course. Given everything that's happened, well, it would be the last thing on your mind." That thought passed on by... though at that next question, the cat's ear gave a flick. What was it like? What would Tawna want to hear? Thinking it through, the cat gave a small smile.
"... It was both the most rewarding and one of the most tiring things I think I've ever done. Every hour of my time was spent with her - raising her, keeping her safe, even just talking to her. Wasn't always easy, wasn't always fun, but... well, Syre always kept my head looking up." Would that help? "The specifics, of course, I'll have to help when we get there..."
Would Haru even know? Tawna showed up as at least a Salamon - not even an in-training level for the tamer to look over. That thought was held for a moment, until Tawna moved onto another. Humans were strange? "I've learned not to doubt what they can do. Haru, Cassandra... heck, Ayumi. They're all incredible, and hold onto a rare strength. Noble, admirable, and in spite of their weakness." As for the 'new' Haru?
"She'll be different. I don't know how or to what extent, but she will change in some ways - but make no mistake. She'll still be Haru. She... she's never been one to give up before, right?" He gave a small smile at that, leaning against Tawna just as she leaned against him.
For those several moments, they simply waited in each-other's company, Tawna's words slipping out into his ears. Right. "I know you'll be fine. Eventually - you're Tawna, after all." He gave a smile at that - he had joked to Haru before, and even spoken about it plainly, about just how strongheaded and 'noble' this Meicoomon was. That hadn't changed - even now, she was feigning strength.
Feigning confidence. All for their sake. Despite that invitation, though, he didn't move, staying right where he was.

Tawna only had a passing understanding of what family was like... actual family at least. She had no biological family... but the way Mikemon described caring for Syre, Tawna understood those feelings and emotions just a tad easier. "... So in a way, its a bit like what I used to do for Haru, and in a way what she did for me." she idly mused, though a bitter feeling boiled in her gut. Hopefully she'd be able to do better this time...
Maybe what made humans so special wasn't something inherent about what they were, but who they were? Perhaps they were not quite as alien as she felt they were at times...? Humans lived very different than Digimon... they had very different fews on morality and life. "Perhaps it is how humans live compared to us that makes them so different...? They face very different challenges from us Digimon, so maybe that is why they seem so special to us... or why we are even bonded with them." she briefly wondered to herself, though soon enough shook her head as she smiled lightly. "Well... it doesn't really matter to me personally. I'm not one for science honestly. I was taught only two things doc before Haru... to serve and to fight. I'm not much of a philosopher really." she joked as she chuckled to herself... her mood at least improving somewhat.
He was right... There was no reason to worry. This YukumiBotamon incubating in this egg...? It was Haru. There was no doubt in her mind about that. Maybe their form would be changed, but deep down it would still be her. Digimon never really changed from form to form after all... "I suppose. Worrying about it maybe isn't healthy... We'll just I suppose get to that point when we get there." she spoke, weakly smiling at the calico cat Digimon that remained at her side. "... Thank you, Mikemon. You don't know how much this means to me... or maybe you do? Heh. I'm not even sure what I'M feeling." she chuckled, her eyes moistening up slightly as she gazed down at the egg.
She just had to endure for another week. One more week and than they could be together again.

"I've no doubt Haru saw you as family, Tawna. And its definitely the same the other way." The cat said that with a warm smile - though it wasn't just an effort to comfort Tawna. It was the truth, after all: Mikemon and Haru had spilled out their hearts to each-other at least twice before, hadn't they?
In all, it was different to know just what made humans different than Digimon. Maybe their shorter lives put more meaning in their accomplishments? Maybe they were more driven in their shorter span? Or maybe Tawna had it right, and it was just a means for the two worlds to connect? It was hard to say - but he smiled as the Meicoomon did. Right, it didn't matter - Haru was amazing, and definitely worth the extent that both Cassandra and Tawna were going out for her.
The egg was Haru - if either of them knew the tamer, there was no doubting that truth. Looking on at that egg, and staying right by Tawna's side, Mikemon gave a smile of his own. "All I can really say is, I wouldn't be doing this any other way. You've saved my life before - and as much as I can say 'its the least I can do', well, I want to be here for you."
That was really all there was to it, wasn't there? And past that... there wasn't much need for words, at least not for the immediate future. They had an egg to watch, and monitor... and it would be a long week.

That was an odd thought... Was it fair to say Haru was family to her? Tawna was unsure as to whether or not that was the case... but maybe it was? Haru meant the world to her, and deep down she knew they had meant a lot to them as well. Every single person Haru knew was a dear friend to them, and she wanted to do whatever she could to make sure this wasn't a simple book end for Haru.
There would be a future for Haru still... She would stop at nothing to make sure one existed for that girl, and knowing that there were people out there who had her back... it did make her feel just a tad bit lonely.
"Nonsense. I just was the muscle. Haru was the one who even got us there to begin with... I'd be nothing without Haru. She's my tamer after all." the orange maine coon joked... though was it really one?
It didn't feel like one.
Days went by. Tawna had little to leave the egg from her sights, even with Mikemon around to help her. The truth of the matter was that... she honestly needed the egg more than it needed her. She didn't care if it perhaps made her look a tad pathetic, but this egg was hers... It was her one solace against the gloom and despair of the recent events.
Still, there was a positive effect with the doctor's presence. Tawna grew livelier, shreds of her more gentle personality coming back. It wasn't the same of course, but the Meicoomon's attitude and condition grew distinctly healthier from how the doctor might have first seen her arriving at the base ran by the mysterious team Metal Drive.
The fourth night was uneventful for the most part... Tawna was able to rest much easier with Mikemon's presence, but she was blissfully unaware as she slept what the doctor may be experiencing... their own sleep interrupted by a presence within his very core.
A presence far too familiar for a former demon lord.
The doctor's dreams held an intruder... one that did not seem to intend trying to hide their presence from the doctor's own senses. It wouldn't have been possible anyway within his core... This was a mass of darkness that was just as tainted and recognizable as his own. And the owner of this darkness?
A Lucemon Larva... One that floated eerily while staring at the doctor's dream-self, a soft giggle from the insectoid angelic demon.
"... Hello, Greed. I hope you do not mind me dropping by. I considered it easier to contact through a fellow demon lord than merely drop by and cause a ruckus." the creature spoke, and though it was the first time it spoke so clearly to him... the doctor would recognize this particular Lucemon Larva as the one that had been following Haru and Tawna as of recently. An odd creature that seemed to just come and go, speaking in a tongue that only he had the knowledge of understanding. This however was the first time this creature was addressing him... their emotionless face offering little idea as to what their intentions were.

The next few days went along smoothly enough - and over the course, Tawna at least started to show hints of her own self.
It wasn't perfect, there wasn't any way it could be, but the conversations started to drift away from the serious and intimate to the more relaxed and sanity-keeping. An incubator was put together so that Tawna could at least have a few hours per day without the egg - or at least a place to put it down to eat, without having to worry every waking second about its condition. Over time, it became somewhat easier, the two able to laugh and joke with each-other at least to some extent.
Then came the fourth night. This marked only the second night that Tawna was more-or-less sound asleep, and Mikemon, resting on a makeshift bed on the floor, found himself stirring. It was as if there was a faint buzz at the edge of his head, something trying to peer in deep inside himself. Into his core... into the deep expanses of his past data. He didn't 'wake up' in proper, but instead found himself in his own 'mental space', the Mikemon wearing the same garb as he had when he had revealed himself to Tawna. It was, at least in part, how the Lucemon Larva had seen him, right?
In all honesty, he should have been surprised. But turning to face it, seeing that Lucemon float just out of reach, Mikemon gave a low sigh. "... Pride, then?" It was less a guess and more a call for clarification, the cat taking a moment to tilt his head.
"But not the Pride from my era - not the four-winged angel. But I suppose that's neither here nor there - you're like me, right? A Lord without a Title." Saying that, he crossed his arms, taking a seat - that very chair appearing almost as he thought to sit down. His control over his own data made this, more-or-less, possible.
