A Necessary Lesson [Syre/Cas]

"Honestly, it was a rather stupid way for me to break my hand..." And it wasn't the first time Denryu's broken a bone, though that was neither here nor there considering the situation. As for Cassandra's concern, the General did take a moment to mull it over. "An infection might be possible, though rare to see in the Digital World itself. You did say it yourself, my hands are not quite what they used to be... hm?"
The dosage? "Two shots the day of, and one daily, around noon. Tens." His response was calm, blinking as the back of her knuckles rested against her head. Was she checking his temperature - yup, there was the thermometer. To anyone else, he might have simply 'rode it out', but he took the device in hand and simply moved through the paces - hand offered to the doctor, and a quick reading of temperature: 36.8C, or well within an average range. Of course, it was entirely possible that Bakemon's healing had stifled the infection in the first place.
"And right at the fucking time I need to be working on research..." Syre, meanwhile, followed along with the Monitamon - through what felt like an empty, barren manor. Honestly, that couldn't be further from the truth: though a few were recovering and a few 'silent', a few of the Xros General's members were out in the back, running through their own drills and paces, trying whatever they could to 'push forward'.
Her ear twitched, as she was led into a rather small room... but heck, there was a chair, and even a place to put her stuff! Stepping right on in, taking a brief look at the place - and testing a rather dodgy-looking light-switch - she gave a nod. "I can handle unpacking, but, um... am I supposed to just stick around here, or just listen for Cassandra calling??"

"I think it was more stupid that you left it this long." The Doctor sighed checking her D-terminal as she winced at the readings. The break was not the worst she'd seen, but was far from clean. "And the infection I'm worried about is blood poisoning which from the rate of healing and inflammation I would say is a real risk. Angel and the others did a good job of setting and taking care of this, but I'm going to have to reset part of it." Cas explained pulling a rag from her pocket as she wadded it up and offered it to him.
"Set this between your teeth. With as much morphine as you are on you likely won't feel much, but you may still see some stars." The Doctor instructed waiting for the man to do as she asked as she carefully gripped his hand setting her fingers over the section that needed to be reset.
All right on the count of three. One." Cas began counting down. "Two~" She added swiftly applying pressure as the bones cracked shifting under the force with a meaty snap as she rebroke the section that needed to be reset.
"Three." She finished grabbing some cotton balls and disinfectant as she dabbed at the clear fluid and blood that leaked from the neat black stitches applying a clean pad as she moved to quickly bandage the hand and set it in the brace immobilizing it and strapping it in just tight enough to not cut off circulation.
"I'm going to switch you over to topical anesthesia and an oral painkiller and antibiotic in a few hours once the morphine wears off since I suspect you're going to have a fever spike. Phantom may continue healing your hand tomorrow, but no healing sessions longer then fifteen minutes." The Doctor instructed before she sighed letting silence lapse over them for a moment.
"I know you are used to making due Denryu and if you do not entirely trust me to treat you after...after what happened...I understand." Cas spoke her words somewhat halting the thought that he might not be comfortable with her after what she had done, what she had to do to the Hunter, was a painful if understandable concern.
"However please don't let your injuries fester like this. I can put you in contact with Mikemon or a Doctor in the human world if need be, but you being hurt...it concerns me." She added voice whispers soft and far more vulnerable then she would have liked.
"Oh! Well she can call you through me or she'll likely come and find you herself. It's a bit house yeah, but there's not too far you can go." Zaku explained hovering just inside the door as he watched Syre inspect her room.
"But if you'd like once you're unpacked I can show you where the kitchen is and the workout room though apparently we're down a punching bag now. Most everyone just comes and goes as they please." The Monitamon added motioning down the hall.
"Though you can probably find Angel and Dagger not too far from one another, Cloak I think is still sleeping on and off if he's not tailing Oyabun or in the kitchen, and Emma is laid up for another week on bed rest after the damage she took since Cas wants to make sure there's not long term nerve damage other then some superficial scarring. My brother and I have been keeping her company watching anime and stuff." Zaku explained counting down on his fingers where he knew most of their usual group as.
"That or she's might be working on whatever new bit of tech she'd bribed one of the others to bring for her to toy with while she's laid up." He added after a moment of thought.

Re-set part of it?
At the mere mention of it, Denryu couldn't help but give a mental sigh - knowing full well what this would entail in their current setting. Taking the rag in hand, the general gave a short nod, setting the cloth between his molars as Cassandra took the broken appendage in hand.
One... two... SNAP!
Even through the morphine, Denryu's harsh wince could be felt right across the room, a fresh stream of blood spilling right out over his hand. After a moment, he used his left hand to fling that rag onto the floor, keeping his right as still as possible for Cassandra to put back into place. The rigid wooden plates were put right back into place, just as Denryu would manage to catch his breath. Despite having done all this, however... Cassandra brought up that next point. 'After what had happened.'
"Considering I was the one who risked that position, you've nothing to blame yourself for, doctor." His tone was flat - half pained - but Cassandra might be able to tell he was serious. "Besides, you know I'm still not entirely for having any of those cats here... ugh." It felt he had more to say. Heck, he did have more to say.
"I'm... just going to lie down for a bit, then. We'll... we'll talk later." That vulnerable tone was quickly reciprocated... "So you're the middleman then, Zaku? I can work with that."
Syre returned a nod, and a short, polite smile, before moving to start set her stuff into place, letting the Monitamon explain in the background. It seemed that the cat would have quite a bit of space to roam, so long as she was careful enough not to step on anyone's toes. This was good - it meant that she didn't have to sit and wait in her own room, all the time! Unfamiliar names with unfamiliar conditions flew right over her head, as she started to put stuff away. Blank notebooks, texts that dad wanted her to read, a few packs of cards...
... And a large, book-shaped package, wrapped up in brown paper. "Oh, right, this." The BlackGatomon turned to face Zaku: "Don't know if this is a good time, but this is something that my dad wanted to pass to Cassandra? Apparently a 'thank-you-and-apology' for... something."

"You shouldn't blame yourself either. Neither of us could have known..." Cassandra murmured the tightness in her shoulders relaxing a touch at his reassurance, but the concern never leaving her eyes. Instead she stood slowly offering the man a hand and an arm to steady himself against.
"Rest would be wise." The Doctor spoke choosing her next words with care. "If you would mind I would like to walk with you. I'm not certain I know where your room is and I'll need to swing by later to check on your hand." She added more then a little concerned about the Man falling out between here and there. Perhaps Denryu was taller then her own small form, but she was strong enough to steady him and keep them both from harm should his knees buckle. The least she could do was make sure he didn't catch himself on his injured hand.
"I guess I am!" Zaku chirped seeming to brighten at the idea of holding such an important position as he took the brown paper wrapped package with a soft 'Oooh.'
"It feels like a book. Cas loves books. Though I wonder what Mikemon is apologizing for? Those two usually get along really well though Oyabun has been distant lately...then again everyone's been through the ringer." The little Monitamon mused taking and weighing the package in his hands.
"Oh! Are you hungry? Do you like tea? Cas taught me how to make tea. You can call her Cas by the way. I don't think anyone, but your Dad calls her Cassandra. Heck she probably wouldn't even mind if you called her Aunty Cas. Your Dad is like an older brother to her." Zaku rambled on trying to fill the silence though that was somewhat expected with the little tv ninja digimon

"Mhm..."
At this point, Denryu was not going to turn down the escort, though the athletic general was able to, rather smoothly, get back up onto his feet. He didn't rush it, testing his own weight before he would make his way to the door, about a half-measure slower than his usual walking pace. Thankfully, there wouldn't come a time where Denryu's posture would buckle (though he did rest his good arm around Cassandra's shoulder), quite easily making his way down the hall - past Syre's room - before finding his own, vacant room.
He made a point to carefully sit on the edge, pulling out a pillow to let that broken hand rest on a more level surface. "Sorry... looks like you're going to be the one holding this place up for a bit." He lied back, using his 'good' arm to cover his eyes. "Then again, you're usually good at keeping everyone in line..." Yes, it was a book! Syre gave a nod - though at the point of the cat apologizing, Syre gave a shrug. "Dad did look stressed when he came back... you know, sort of like he 'immediately regretted' something?" Syre gave a sigh, though unknown to her, that last comment - with the package in her hands - might have been picked up by the passing doctor.
And... tea? "Um... tea sounds nice, sure!" She gave a smile! "Dad's more a coffee person, so I really don't get to drink anything fancy... and yes, I am a bit hungry." She gave a chuckle, her ear twitching a bit. 'Aunty Cas'?
"... Um... I think... 'Cas' might sit better than that..." Putting the last of her stuff away - settling her bag in the bottom shelf - she moved to check out the futon. "Oh, Ayumi had one of these. Just pull... here, I think?"

Cassandra did indeed overhear Syre's words, but her concentration was fixed pointedly on getting the General back to his own room where she would linger for a bit by the door. Taking a moment to ensure he was able to lay down comfortably before she rummaged through her infini-store pulling out a bottle of water and loosening the cap for him before she set it down on the table near the bed.
"Yes well apparently I can manage to keep everyone in line, but yourself Denryu." Cassandra murmured her lips twitching up into an almost gentle smile the softness uncharacteristic on her usually solemn face. Before she dug through her medical kit carefully selecting a few pills before setting them down next to the water. The pain meds, and antibiotic were easy enough to recognize.
"I suppose that is why I am rather fond of you." She admitted quietly before turning for the door only pausing on her way out to add, "Be sure to take those pills when you wake up and feel free to call for me. For now though sleep well." The Doctor instructed as she left the man to his rest closing the door behind her as she stepped out into the hall just in time to hear the squeak of the futon shifting with a clatter.
"Yeah that should be how it works, but I think this ones frame is kinda old and~" Zaku began stepping up to help tug on the one spot where it was sticking only for it to finally give way with a groan and a crash dropping the bed flat and dumping the little digimon on his butt with a thump.
"Ah I see you've found the bed." Cas's voice spoke up as the Doctor stood in the door arching a brow at the pair and looking faintly amused.
"Oyabun! Oh Dr. Mikemon apparently sent this for you with Miss Syre!" The little Monitamon chirped leaping to his feet to hand Cas the package as the Doctor weighed it in her hands removing the brown paper covering to reveal the text held within.
"A book. I do love books." Cassandra quipped with a barely there smile as Zaku leaned towards Syre and whispered.
"See! Toldja she loves books." The Green Monitamon spoke in what he thought was a soft tone, but was far from quiet. Though the Doctor seemed content to play along.

Fond, huh?
If Denryu was a bit less between 'pain' and 'drugged lucidity', he might have had more of a comment for that - but right now, the strain on his body overtook such 'snark'. Instead, the general simply gave a short nod, and laid flat on his back, starting to close his eyes. "... Thanks."
It would take a while for him to get to sleep (heck, he might not find any real shuteye at all), but he'd at least rest easily enough. "Well, sometimes you just have to force it - aha!"
It might have been an old, dingy piece of furniture, but it wasn't completely unworkable! Almost thrown off her feet herself, the cat let out a call of small triumph as they managed to get that bed flattened out. Though, really, it was unlikely that she'd bother to put it back up as a chair after all that effort.
Her ear flicked at Cassandra's words, Syre giving a small nod, a smile on her face. Zaku had done quite a bit to lift the cat's spirits over such a short amount of time, enough to work Denryu's 'flat toned' response out of her short term memory. As the package shifted to Cassandra's hands, Syre looked on with interest. It was a book, yes: a large hardback. Tearing through would reveal a light-green, simple designed color, with red text:Practical Core Theory Analyzing Aato's Cores and their Relation to the Digivice Volume 3.2
Dr. G. Mikemon, et al Translated to English by Stingmon T.683
A quick flip through would reveal just what this was: a post-graduate level textbook, dense with chapters regarding Tamers, Twins, Xros Armies, and even Spirit Wielders, the functions of their internal data, and even about a hundred-or-so multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter, referencing a key in the back. Just inside the front cover, Dr. Cross might find Mikemon's note, folded in a simple piece of paper:
Your week was probably worse than mine. Never meant to look at you like that.
Thanks for taking the week to look after Syre. Check inside the note. I'll have to catch up with you later.
Mikemon
The note itself held a gift card to a popular winery just outside of Whitewater. Giving a blink at all of this, Syre tilted her head. "Dad, um... said this might be of some help for you..."

Glancing at the note and the giftcard the laughter that bubbled up from Cas's lips was soft and low and utterly unexpected as much by the Doctor herself as Zaku. Who seemed to pause blinking in surprise as he watched his contractor lean against the doorframe to support herself wiping a few tears from her eyes as she doubled over with mirth. The sound seeming to echo down the quiet hallways a few of the other Digimon poking their heads out of the various rooms. One such being a rather frazzle looking Kotemon who skid out of a door in a rush of concern only seeming to process the sound once he was out in the hall and in the process of falling on his face where he tripped over his long sleeves cussing and struggling as he went down.
"Oh shi~" Cas let slip cutting off her own cursing as she clenched her teeth closed trying to muffle her laughter with one hand as she tucked the book, the card and note slid between the pages under her arm and dashed to go help the wayward twin up.
"What's so funny?" Cloak questioned voice soft with wounded pride as Cassandra helped him to his feet and handed him the hardback. To which the Kotemon blinked down at it and cast his Tamer and incredulous stare.
"You're laughing at a book." The Kotemon questioned tone gentle as he didn't want to hamper Cassandra's amusement, but not quite understanding the joke.
"No what's inside the book." Cas explained motioning for him to open it as the Kotemon flipped through a few pages spying the note as he let out a soft "Ohh."
"That makes more sense." Cloak adds before his gold eyes drift up spying Syre and Zaku peering from the doorway.
"Syre..." Cas begins nudging the Kotemon forward, "This is Cloak one of my partners which reminds me where is Dagger?" The Doctor asks as Cloak lets out an annoyed sigh.
"I'm pretty sure he's 'sparring' with Angel or the two are curled up in a blanket asleep again being disgustingly adorable." The Kotemon grumbles out.

Syre didn't know what she was expecting, but laughter definitely wasn't it! Seeing Cassandra practically collapse against the wall, Syre gave a startled 'nya' of surprise, leaping up atop the futon to give the human some much needed room! From this higher vantage point, she quite easily saw the Kotemon stumble on inside - ah, yes, she was told about this one. This was either Dagger, or...
Cloak! Giving a polite nod towards the small dragon, she offered her short greeting: "Nice to meet you, Cloak... hm?" So Dagger was curled up with... 'Angel'? Come to think of it, the Bakemon's name was 'Phantom'. Mulling all this over in her head, Syre felt her thoughts start to spin together. "Oof... trying to keep these code names straight in my head is going to throw me off..."
She added a light chuckle to that, but really, that was about all she could offer. Stepping off of the futon - standing much closer to the Kotemon's height as a result - she turned her attention towards Cassandra. "So how did working on that hand go? Anything too problematic?"

Cloak nodded in greeting doing his best to look a bit more refined then his initial first impression. "It is a pleasure to meet you as well Syre. I apologize for my twins absence." The Kotemon intoned politely as he offered her a nod of greeting before handing the book back to Cas.
"Zaku would you place this in my room. I think I heard you mention some snacks and a drink for our guest as I was passing by. Would you mind fetching all of us some and meeting us at Emma's room? I'm sure she'd like some company and I need to check her healing progress." The Doctor requested as the little Monitamon seemed to straighten up taking the book that the woman would pass back to him.
"Sure Oyabun! I can do just that. I'll see you in a few minutes Syre!" Zaku called out jogging out of the room as Cas motioned for the Black Gatomon to follow her down the hall.
"I apologize for sending you out of the room Syre. I had to re-set the General's hand and there were some choice words used to describe the pain I didn't think were fit for your ears. He's resting now however." The Doctor explained her laughter having died away, but that tiny barely there smile remaining though for how long was questionable. Still she had needed the laugh.

"Oh, that's alright... everyone around here seems pretty spread put as it is." And it didn't seem as if the entire 'gang' here would be hanging around together, as Cassandra asked for Zaku to drop off the book and prepare a few snacks. Syre gave a wave as the Monitamon sprinted off, Syre following alongside Cassandra as she led the way to Emma's room.
"Mm... well, I figured it was something serious. Dad sometimes has to kick me out of the room when I'm helping when he 'spots' something with a patient, so I'm used to it." Giving a half-shrug at that, rather used to the process, she'd follow along that hall... her ear twitching at the sound of something in the background. The clacking of a... keyboard?
"Miss Emma, please... are you sure you should be pushing yourself like this?"
"That's hardly the matter right now, Vigilant."
It seemed that Denryu's family shared this sort of defiance in their blood: Denryu had tried to simply 'glide along' with a broken hand, and Emma - who, by all rights, shouldn't have even been up out of the bed - was sitting across a monitor - and not in a passive sense, either. Line after line of code streamed across the screen, Emma's eyes flicking through each piece and component as it slipped by. At her right-hand side was a pile of common D-Tector cards as well as an open, canned energy drink, and at her left, a card scanner, hooked up to a desktop below. Placed off to the side were a handful of 'blue cards'...
... And in her focus, she didn't even notice Syre's or Cassandra's entrance.
"Oh, my... she's going to grind herself to the bone like this..."

"Well you won't learn if you don't observe, but that being said I do have to balance patient confidentiality with your lessons here." Cas explained even as she pushed over the door her eyes taking in the sight before her as her gaze swept over the distressed Knightmon and Emma hard at work. Letting out a long suffering sigh the Doctor was quick to stride across the room deftly picking up the energy drink and dumping it in the nearby trash.
"Emma when was the last time you actually slept or ate and drank anything other then energy drinks and..." Cas glanced at the barely there orange residue on the keyboard "Cheetos." She summarized kneading at her temples as she wondered if Mikemon could somehow see the future or if he was just uncannily good at guessing.
"Vigilant please at least tell me you helped her to the computer and she's not running around when I'm not looking? I understand bed rest is boring, but still." Cassandra intoned seeming to be slowly accepting that this was just going to be one of those days.
"Dare I even ask why all the cards?" Cloak questioned peering into the room after them.

"Oh, my..."
Between Cassandra and 'Vigilant', it was clear that this girl was, well, doing something that she wasn't supposed to be doing. The doctor's low, drawn out sigh spelled it all, the energy drink can clattering against another as it was haplessly thrown into the bottom of the bin. That was the first time Emma acknowledged that Cassandra was in the room, with just a small glance over her shoulder. The question was pointed, Emma briefly mulling it over in her head. "What was lunch, two hours ago...? Then that's the last time I ate, and I've been at this for four."
"Well, I mean I did help her to the desk... but at this point, I wish I didn't." The Knightmon shook his head... but it was Cloak's question that managed to put some context into this. "I need a base to test this code on - the spirits and the live Digimon are out of the question." Typing away at the keyboard, even through her explanation, Emma pressed on:
"I know what you're going to say, but I have to patch the holes in this. The information from the USB was great, but I was the Sakkakumon. There's information about that statue that I could never hope to parse into words. A delay on this simply won't work - if a thought slips away, that might be an answer we lose forever. Not like we'll ever get another crack at it."
Her reasoning... well, she seemed confident enough in it, even if it wasn't entirely sound. At that, Syre spoke up: "But if you keep pressing on like this... won't you just make your memory worse? I mean-"
"Not everyone processes the information the same way. I've been on this same trail of thought for..." She chanced a glance down at the clock, "Ninety minutes."

Resisting the urge to groan Cas smoothed a hand over her tired face before she turned towards Emma's bed and snatching a pillow from it poked the girl lightly in the back prompting her to lean forward as the Doctor sandwhiched the thing between her and the chair. "There. Sit back and relax the tension in you'r shoulders. So long as you don't try to use your spirits I will restrain myself from yelling at you and calling you an idiot as I understand how important this information is to you and us all." The Doctor explained grabbing a glass from the desk as she wandered into the bathroom to fill it with water and set it down by Emma's side.
"That being said you cannot run off of energy drinks and snacks. Drink some water. Zaku is bringing some food and tea. If you insist on doing this you need to be taking at least a five minute break every thirty minutes or so. Though at least the fact you're able to type without too much difficulty is a good sign that you haven't suffered any permanent nerve damage." Cassandra quipped voice dripping with exasperation and her own exhaustion.
"Are you have any tension headaches or migraines?" She asked glancing between the spirit user and the screen.

"Hm."
'Hm' was the best she could do? Well, at least she was going along with it: Emma leaned forward as that pillow was set into place, managing to at least let her upper back get some cushioning to change the way she was sitting. As that water was set at her desk, she gave it a brief glance, returning her attention to the screen.
"Duly noted, doctor..." She gave a sigh. "Fine, I'll do a little better to at least give my head a break. No point in pulling me away from the chair, though, might just have to kick away from the desk..." Was that a compromise, or was she truly thinking this was the best way to handle it? At Cassandra's last question, she rolled her eyes.
"Cas, I've been stringing together caffeine and cheap carbs all day. My forehead feels like its about to pop, and the only thing keeping it together is the typing and focusing on this little blinking cursor on the screen." This, considering how she spent most of her day... was perfectly, medically normal. The casual way she spoke of it, of course, sparked other concerns.
"Please, Miss Emma..." The Knightmon gave a nervous stammer. "I know you're busy. But once you get through that... well, part or section, please take the time to rest! The cat's right, genius might strike you if you take the time to consider it from a different angle!"
"I would agree with you, if this wasn't working." Emma tapped on, as Syre gave a low sigh in the background.
"... This place is crazy..."
