A Necessary Lesson [Syre/Cas]

Cas weighed the options before them with a small thoughtful frown as she considered what exactly could be done. "Thankfully in the case of partial amnesia due to trauma memories usually come back in bits and pieces. It would be best to expose him to familiar faces and settings to speed up the process, but...well for now given his injuries it would be wise not to put too much stress on...Sol." The Doctor explained as Cas wracked her mind for what she could remember about memory loss both human and digital.
"I know he has a partner, but I do not know who they are, but...well I would be willing to bet your Father does or he can put me in contact with someone who does." The Doctor added before turning back to her patient.
"How are you feeling Sol? Do you think you'd be up to some soup?" Se questioned with a tilt of her head. Typically one of the easiest signs of a digimon being on the up-and-up being the return of their insatiable appetites.

Amnesia, huh?
'Sol' gave a sigh on hearing that diagnosis. As well-known as an ailment as it was, it was still quite the jarring thing to have happen out of the blue. Cassandra had a few ideas, but for now, it seemed the squirrel would have to rest. "Granted, it would be nice to even know what those familiar 'places and settings' would even look like... hm." A troublesome situation, to say the least.
However, his ear did twitch on the mention of a partner! "Then I'm an Aato, then?" Sol briefly thought it over. "Would explain why I'm still in this rookie form. Don't know why, but it just feels... 'uncomfortable'."
"Hm... it might be worth sending a message to dad, then. You'd have to, of course - my D-Terminal's not on me." Stating the obvious, yes.
And thankfully, at the mention of soup, Iko's expression perked right up! "Oh, definitely. Don't know how long I've been out, but I feel like I'm running on empty! Um... yes, thanks." Syre chuckled at the squirrel's enthusiasm!
It was still a risk to have him leave the room, of course, but at the very least this patient was on the road to physical recovery. "And now that I'm awake... damn, I don't know. Maybe if I just 'think at it' a bit, something will click..."
Was that how it worked? He had no idea.

"Soup it is then. Don't worry Syre I'll send the message soon as we get our guest some food." Cas explained tapping away at her D-terminal as she kindly requested if Zaku or Char could bring a bowl of chicken noodle soup and a small folding bed table to the room. Message sent the Doctor turned back to her patient her expression softening in sympathy at their obvious frustration.
"Rushing healing rarely goes well. You've been out for about a week, but if you're able to keep the soup down without too much trouble we'll move you onto hardier food to help your data heal and get your strength back. You unfortunately suffered some rather severe electrical burns. Though I'm sad to say without your partner there's nothing I can do to elevate your form to something comfier as it were." The Doctor intoned somewhat apologetically.
"Still if you are up and eating you'll likely heal quickly." She assured him with a small smile.

... That was one thing.
Though Sol had just learned that he had a partner, something hadn't 'clicked' to him as of yet, but on the second go-around, the squirrel found himself pondering. "Without my partner? Wait, why wouldn't he be here..." His eyes flickered between the cat and Cassandra. "Somehow, I don't think he would have been the type to simply leave me like this. Would you know if my partner made it out of... well..."
He looked down at his bandages. "Whatever this mess was?"
"..." It was a sad thought, but, unfortunately, something that neither herself nor Cassandra would have any details on. "Well, if you're going to believe in him like that, I'll just believe that he's fine." She gave a nod, not finding any fault in that logic as it was. "Maybe something will come to you after you eat... how are you feeling otherwise?"
She was here for a reason, after all! "Just take a moment and go through, from top to bottom. Ears, eyes, throat, chest... anything feel off at all?" Ah - the Kinezumon took a moment, focusing more about his condition than about his thoughts.
"... Head's clear, I can still move my tail and hands, and... pulse feels right." He was lucky, that was for sure - Syre gave a slight, relieved breath.
"And do you feel you'll be alright on your own?"
"... More or less..."

"I don't believe your partner left you so much as they could not reach you. There were two different routes for evacuation and from what my own partners informed me your Tamer was helping evacuate others down one and could not turn back for you and thus my Team grabbed you when we took our route." Cas explained gently as she mentally reviewed what all Cloak and Dagger had been able to tell her.
"To the best of my twin's knowledge your partner appeared to get out safely, but they sadly couldn't stick around to be certain." She added as a soft knock came at the door. Opening it she found both Zaku and Char standing there. One carrying a large bowl of soup and a spoon and the other the little folding tv bed table.
"Where brought what you asked for Oyabun!" Char quipped snapping into a salute as Cas offered them a slim smile taking the table from Char's grasp.
"Thank you both. One moment please while I set this up." Cas murmured unfolding the table in front of Sol and taking the bowl of soup from Zaku as she sat it in front of him.
"You two can go back about your business. Thank you again for the help." The Doctor spoke as this time it was Zaku that chirped up as he waved to Syre before darting out the door followed by his brother.
"Always happy to help Oyabun!" He called over his shoulder anxious to get back to their episode of Mobilesuit Gundam. More then looking forward to watching his brothers namesake tear through those enemy mobilesuits

"So he's safe... and he was helping other people out of that mess?" Sol didn't know much, but at that base explanation, he couldn't help but give a smile. It meant that his partner hadn't left him behind for no reason - heck, maybe they had been close enough to have the trust for this sort of stunt.
"... Alright. I'll try not to get too worked up over it, then." Fortunately, something else would come along to distract that depressing thought: food! Getting a good whiff of that soup as Zaku and Char moved in, Iko gave a nod of thanks, tail flicking behind as he patiently waited for everything to be set up. Soon enough, he'd be able to pull himself to the edge of the bed, giving a fair sniff of the steam off the broth.
"Oh, that'll do nice... thank you." He gave a nod towards 'Oyabun' and the BlackGatomon, before proving - somehow - capable of using the spoon to get a fair sip.
With a smile, Syre would give a nod to their guest - then towards a button, set on the nightstand next to the bed. "If you need us, give that a buzz. Someone will be here to check on you in a few hours, regardless."
That said, a polite bow was given from the cat - a smile kept on her face as she would follow Cassandra out. A moment later - a few yards down the hall - the cat slammed the edge of her fist against the side of the wall.
"... Damn it..."

Cas flinched slightly at the sudden outburst before she pinned Syre with a flat crimson gaze as she carefully deactivated her holosuit once more. Then sighing the Doctor lifted a bandaged hand to her face to knead at her temples. "Syre..." She began before her words floundered the BlackGatomon's named followed by a second sigh.
"Syre," The Doctor tried once more as she attempted to organize her feelings into thoughts. "When I was younger I foolishly believed that the worst part of my work would be the blood and gore, but it's not. It never is. It's the helplessness and waiting that gets to you." She murmured softly reaching out gingerly to rest a sympathetic hand on the little cat's shoulder.
"I'm sorry you're learning this lessons so young." The Doctor apologized gently before she straightened once more carefully shifting back into professional mode.
"That being said I would like to filter the last of the D-virus out of your data today. You are well rested and healthy so the process shouldn't feel like more then a mild tingle to you and be relatively quick. Still leaving even trace amounts in your system can lead to further issues down the road." Cassandra explained hoping the change of topic might ease the BlackGatomon's mind.

Damn it, it wasn't fair!
This was certainly a hard lesson for the cat to take in, her arm and shoulders tense as she grit her teeth in frustration. Her dad, as well as Dr. Cross, were capable of doing so much... but something as 'simple' as this was beyond their reach, other than to just sit and wait? It wasn't just that, of course, but if the squirrel couldn't be helped... what else was out of reach?
How powerless were they?
Lost in her thought, she gave a slight flinch as that hand slipped right onto her shoulder. Those words sunk deep - the helplessness, the waiting. Cassandra offered facts, but few solutions - after all, what kind of answer could they even give? Syre gave a sigh - relaxing, but clearly still flustered, as she gave her response:
"... Its not your fault. Its just how the world is, isn't it?"
The tone was flat, the 'reality' of it starting to sink in. As Cassandra spoke of fixing the D-Virus in her leg, all she could manage was a nod - it was something that had to be handled, after all. Perhaps thankfully, the tone wouldn't be settled there for very long, as a familiar face turned the corner, finding the doctor in the hall:
"Ah, there you are!" Vigilant, the Knightmon, gave a small bow to the unmasked doctor and her assistant. "Sorry to interrupt, but... well, Emma's managed to finally crack something in the data. She said to find you right away, as it is!"

"It is..." Cas admitted softly trying not to let the way Syre flinched from her touch hurt her feelings as she considered her next words with care. "But that doesn't mean we can't try to change it for the better. The world loses hope when good people cease to strive for change." The Doctor explained voice firm before the clatter of armor caught her attention. Turning her gaze away from the little black cat digimon she instead arched a surprised brow at Vigilant. The Knightmon's words causing the woman to immediately snap to alert.
"Right. She's not hurt is she?" Cas questioned moving to rush after the Knightmon. All too sadly aware that sometimes progress was paid for with blood and quite frankly she didn't entirely trust Emma not to accidentally blow herself up and only think to tell her afterwards when the tech enthusiasts work was done. Then again after Denryu the Doctor was starting to think that perhaps this might be a family trait.

The world wasn't fair... but they had to keep trying anyway?
Of course, Syre knew the gist of what Cassandra was talking about, though it was clear that the BlackGatomon wasn't exactly in the best way right now. Those words still sunk in, the cat giving a light nod of her head - which was honestly about the best Cassandra could hope for at this point.
That still didn't stop her from getting a kick in her step, as the two made their way down the hall! Emma definitely wasn't in her best state yesterday, so that question held quite a bit of weight. "Hurt, no. Exhausted, yes!" The Knightmon seemed less concerned than yesterday, at least. And as the two finally made their way into the room, they would find that same, exhausted spirit wielder - huddled over her desk, resting the side of her head against her arms. She finally had little reason to keep up her 'tension' after all, and as the Knightmon clambered into the room, she stirred awake.
"I have brought the doctor as requested, miss!"
"Hm?" Emma gave a blink, looking up towards the doctor with a nod. "Ah, yes... was finally able to make some good out of the statue's data..." With a nod, she'd look to her right. Next to that card scanner, where the blue cards had rested before, there were now five red cards:
"They're... um, modified 'Matrix Evolution' cards, of course. Instead of forcing a surge from the Digimon's core, it instead implants the... 'suppression' strain from the Sovereign's data." This meant, in short:
"The D-Reaper will find it impossible to... 'root' inside a Digimon, while the card is in effect... ugh, I need coffee..."

"If we're lucky she'll sleep for a few days straight after this and regain her strength." The Doctor murmured with a sigh before she followed Vigilant into the room eyeing Emma before her gaze stayed away to the pile of red cards her brows arching high at the Spirit Users explanation.
"We'll need to run quite a few tests to make sure they are safe first and learn the cards limits. Do we have a stable way of reproducing them if one becomes damaged?" Cas asked her mind going a mile a minute as she thought of the various tests she would need to run and of the possibilities the little red squares of paper held if Emma was right.
"We need to ensure they're safe first or as safe as something like this can be before we use them in the field. The last thing we want is for something to go critically wrong in the middle of a fight for our lives of all things." The Doctor explained with a soft shudder the memory of Hunters red eyes wide with agony and betrayal flashing through her mind. She'd scrubbed at her hands a thousand times till the skin was red and raw and still couldn't shake the gritting feel of data clinging to her claws....fingers now. The smooth blade like nails would take a while yet to regrow if they did at all, but Cas did not consider herself lucky enough to be free of them for good.

"Of course, they do need to be tested in a practical sense..." Emma's tired voice carried through the room, idly blinking as she considered Cassandra's question. Were these difficult to reproduce?
Not as much as one might think, actually. "There's a way, and its not hard at all... now that the program is established, anyway." Giving a small yawn, she sat up, keying in a short command to the console in front of her, before she would reach off to the right: "Start with a common card..." Anything would work - she picked up a bronze-border one, just for proof of concept. "... and charge it with the light of the Digivice, as normal."
The screen of her D-Tector would give a small pulse and - though Cassandra might not have been familiar with this process - that common card would turn blue, similar in design to the red cards on the table. In the same tired tone, and through a yawn, she proceeded: "Run program type three... slide the card through the scanner..."
And, voila. The blue card gave a white 'blink', before turning red, turning flush from bottom to top. It was set with the rest, Emma leaning back in her chair. "It doesn't crash the D-Arc system and supplies to ask for a target, like normal. Provided it works as intended, my only concern is using the Matrix Card as a base - but nothing else supplanted the code properly."
"... So I guess making custom cards is still a bit beyond what you all can do?" Syre, still slightly astonished, gave a blink at that newly created card. "But why is that a concern?"
"Because the Matrix Card is meant for Digivolution - using it for any other purpose would put significant stress on a core. I'd say its safe operational time is..."
She pondered that for a moment: "Fifteen minutes?"

"We'll need to do a dry run first to see how long a Digimon's core can safely handle the strain before we need to end the program." Cassandra spoke carefully gathering up and stacking five of the now six cards to take with her and thankful her EV suit was holding. She certainly had no plans of finding out right that moment how the cards reacted to her, though such tests would come at a later date. Still nodding towards Emma the Doctor couldn't help, but offer the other woman a smile.
"Genius as always Emma. You should take it easy for the rest of the day however, I haven't even seen hide nor hair of your brother all this morning..." Cas began only to trail off clicking her tongue lightly against her teeth as her crimson eyes slowly narrowed. "In fact I've seen suspiciously little of him." She added, the lack of the man's presence odd given his early rising tendencies. Which likely meant one of two things. Either the fever was getting the better of him even with Bakemon's help keeping the infection down and with the antibiotics or he'd snuck off to his office once more. At this point Cas really wouldn't put it past either of the siblings to work themselves half to death not that she was much better.
She just so happened as the team doctor to be responsible for ensuring everyone else didn't follow in her footsteps into an early grave from exhaustion.

"Wait... if the program could be that dangerous, how do you intend to perform the tests?" Legitimately curious, Syre cut in, somewhat concerned for the 'testing situation'. Emma's reply only brought a bit of comfort:
"Preliminary tests are usually taken by Phantom. Bakemon's one of the few types of Digimon that are able to purge their core of impurities at a whim... past that, its usually up to my brother's Digimon to make up the difference." Unfortunately, they were not a legitimate-enough organization to be able to obtain test subjects - willing ones, at least - and so they simply had to work with the personnel at hand. "Though, honestly, this is the first time we're testing something so potentially invasive."
With the new card produced, Emma gave a nod as Cassandra took the rest. And per the doctor's recommendation, she gave a nod - finally closing out of the program - before moving to the bed, collapsing face-first against the cool pillow. Wait, her brother? Emma gave a sigh, turning her attention to the nearby alarm clock. "Around this time, he'd usually be at the gym. I do think I saw him up a bit earlier, so it would be either that, the office, or the living area. If he went out, he'd have gone with at least a few of the 'Xros Army'..."
It wasn't hard for both Syre and Emma to tell that Cassandra was concerned! The BlackGatomon, still mulling over using their allies as test subjects, gave a blink in Cassandra's direction. "It shouldn't be that hard to check in on him..." Well, not unless she had to break down his door, anyway.

"I'm certain he would know where Phantom has floated off too as well." Cas mused though the excuse was a thinly veiled one even to her own ears as she gave Emma a nod. "Rest well. Once we get past the initial testing phase with Phantom I can have the reboot card in the wings for emergencies." Cassandra explained though the additional information was more for Syre's comfort then the tired Spirit Users as Cas flicked Vigilant a small two fingered salute good bye as she carefully closed the door behind the Black Gatomon and herself on their way out.
"We'll check his room first and then the office. I don't believe he'd risk furthering his injury in the gym or going out without alerting us given how much heat has been on us lately." The Doctor murmured beelining for the man's door as she rapped her knuckles lightly against it. Should no answer come she would try the door to see if it was locked to peak inside before moving on should the man in question not be there.
