Wherever it went, darkness followed.
The strange, black Apollomon dashed through the Dark Area, leaving a trail of black flames in its wake. It had been running for so long that it wasn't quite clear on why it had started in the first place. A thick black cloud rested in its mind, obscuring its own thoughts, and the thoughts of its two pilots.
Eventually, it found a cave and flew inside, needing a place to hide away from everything else. Once it landed, a sigh escaped its mouth and an explosion of dark energy caused it to disappear completely, leaving only a human and his Digimon partner, both unconscious.
Several hours passed, and eventually the two woke up around the same time, lying on the tough cave floor. Neither of them could move, but at least had the energy to speak to one another.
"What the hell was that?" Marshal groaned.
"I have no idea what happened," Coronamon admitted. "I got angry, and I just...exploded. Next thing I knew, I was trapped. I thought we were in Apollomon's headspace, but I couldn't see anything or feel your presence. Like something was...blocking our connection."
"You weren't in control of that either?" Marshal asked. "I had to beg our body not to turn on everyone else."
"Oh god," Coronamon gasped. "Are Bellamy and the others okay?" The thought of harming his own fiancé caused him great distress.
"Yes, I managed to get us out of there in time," Marshal assured him. As he heard Coronamon breathe a sigh of relief, he did the same. However, he had told a little lie. It was true that Colin's group was largely unharmed, but what of Isaac? Even Marshal was unsure of his condition.
The two laid there in silence for a while until Marshal decided to speak again. "We can't go back to Daedalus," he said. "Not until we figure out what happened to us. It's too dangerous."
"But Bellamy and Luke were counting on us to help them take out Zanbamon," Coronamon complained. "We can't just abandon a mission like that."
"If we go back now, we'd be nothing but a liability," Marshal reminded him. "We have to let the others take care of the job. For now, our focus should be on getting out of the Dark Area."
"Wouldn't that be the worse option?" Coronamon wondered. "Letting whatever we did loose on the rest of the Digital World would be horrible."
"I have a theory about that," Marshal replied. "Counting this trip, the last two times we've been in the Dark Area are the only times we've really had an issue with it. There's something in the Dark Area that helps influence this dark transformation. If we leave, we can potentially supress it."
"That's a guess at best," Coronamon retorted. "When we fought in the Bayou with Yuu, we almost lost it then too, remember?"
"Yeah, but we didn't fully lose control," Marshal reminded him. "Besides, what other option do we have?"
Coronamon was silent. There really wasn't much else they could do at the moment. As much as Coronamon wanted to find Bellamy again, and as much as he wanted to hide far away from everything at the same time, getting out of the Dark Area was probably their only option. Finally, the lion Digimon rose to his feet. "Come on, then," he said, offering his hand to Marshal to help him up. "We're in this together, right?"
Marshal gave a half-hearted smile. "As always," he said. He took his partner's hand and slowly got on his feet. With a new resolve to find out what happened to them, Marshal and Coronamon took off on their slow journey out of the Dark Area.
