Bright fires cast dark shadows... [Yomi/Katherine]

Giving a warm smile to her peer, Katherine accepted all of her good wishes. “I really appreciate those energies. We already got to him… or something like that.” Any other details would just complicate the story further, so they should probably leave it right there. “Do not worry. I’m one hundred percent sure they don’t know we’re here right now. Now that they think they took everything from us, they just don’t care anymore where we go.” She explained.
In any case, the other reason to leave the story to this point was that it was getting kind of late. Both Katherine and Jazz stood up, while Yomi looked at her digivice. They put away the plastic dishes into a bag, and store it in the human’s backpack. They would get rid of that once they got to the settlement. The duo then stared at each other for a couple of seconds. As expected, the storm hadn’t even begun to stop. They then took a look at the tent. It was a light green tent with a small lamp inside and a rug for a roof. The size was not a problem. It could fit Katherine, Yomi, and even Jazz inside of it. But…
“Listen, Yomi…” Katherine walked towards the teenager with the pink hoodie and the broken glasses. “I only carry one sleeping back with me. I used to share it with Jazz when she was a tiny bunny but now she’s this huge pig-girl and she can’t fit even in one of those for herself, so I’ve never considered getting another one.” She was probably trailing off. A brief silence ensued. “I want you to use it. I can sleep on the floor of the tent. I really don’t mind.” She added. Her green eyes then caught sight of what the girl was doing. She was trying to throw her digivice into the fire? Well, that was not something that strange, considering how sick she seemed to be of this world. What was weird was that the thing was seemingly not budging, and was looking at her with mad eyes!
“I-I Think you’re making it angry.” Katherine’s countenance couldn’t be described as anything else than ‘freaking out’. Even when she had noticed the girl’s digivice had an odd appearance when she first saw it, she was now realizing it even seemed like it was making a face. Was that thing alive? It was so freaky! “You really have a very particular D-Tector.” She kept blatantly staring at the object, while Yomi even moved it to her other hand, and tried to throw it into the fire again, not succeeding. “I think it doesn’t want you to get rid of it.” She added, raising her gaze, thinking. Why hadn’t this girl’s spirit gotten in contact with her so far? If she had been inside this world for a week, the logical thing would be for it to try to reach her somehow.
“Yomi… you hadn’t talked to any digimon that looks like a spirit or any kind of supernatural creature, had you?” She then dwelled a little more into this, trying to not go as far as frightening Yomi, even if that ship might have sailed already. “Have you heard a voice or anything like that inside of your head?”

"Yeah, it... doesn't look too friendly. Fine, you win."
Yomi exhaled, as her arm was starting to get tired. She put the the device back into her pocket, and it let go of her hand. Seemed it was content so long it was kept somewhere on Yomi's body. Which meant that whatever this detector was representing did not want her to get rid of it. And ... it was a chilling prospect. To now that something, somewhere, had its eyes on her. She shuddered.
"Nasty little thing."
As the conversation went on, and Katherine asked the girl about if she had any contact with anything "mysterious" in these parts, Yomi could only scratch her head. Of course... this girl is used to living here... What's strange for her and for me are two different things. - she thought to herself, as she tried to figure out what was it that could be considered strange and spiritual.
"Uhh... I don't know. The Witchmon seemed pretty supernatural. Well... more supernatural than the rest of this place." - the girl said, looking at the crackles of lightning outside the cave. Their crimson color was nothing like anything she had seen at home. "I did have trouble sleeping for the past week. Though... I'm not sure I'd blame any spirits for that. I can't remember most of the dreams either. They were about some ...shadows? Violence? Cannot recall. Is it important? I can record my dreams from now on, if it helps..."
She yawned, rather widely, before realizing it and covering her mouth with her hand. Yawning out lout was not exactly polite. As if catching on her words, Katherine was keen to offer her sleeping bag. It made Yomi blush a little and wave her hands in front of herself in a polite decline. She did not want to impose.
"Ohh... but... it's your bag, Katherine-san. And you've already done so much for me... It's no trouble really, I already slept on the ground during my first day in this place... It's not too bad. And with your help, I'll be home soon anyway..." - she said, before looking at the pig-like digimon, who has been largely silent through the latter part of the conversation. Yomi would have questioned her being a small bunny, but then again... she just saw it become a gryphon.
"I'm sure Jazz does not need the bag either... I mean... you kind of look like a girl wearing a pig suit. Do these come off, by the way?"
Yomi curiously shuffled closer to the digimon, looking over the costume she wore. Because without the extra "parts", she looked kinda like a human girl. A very rowdy-looking one.

While staring at the artifact until Yomi put it back into her pocket, Katherine quirked an eyebrow. It didn’t look too friendly. It didn’t look friendly at all. “I had never seen a D-Tector that looked so… alive as yours. Funnily enough, I’ve met many Spirit Wielders lately, even if at first I only met one. That might be a coincidence, I guess.” At least it seemed like it was. It didn’t seem like this particular type of humans was somewhat related to the Dark Area.
Morwena was truly a character. “Yes. That Witchmon was something else.” Katherine giggled. Even though that was not what she was aiming at with her question. “She’s a particular type of digimon I had never seen, but she is not the only Witchmon there exist. I’m talking about something more particular, something that felt… different. In this context, of course.” It would be logical everything felt different for the recently arrived teenager, but meeting her spirit would definitely be something really life-changing. “Trouble sleeping…” That actually sound like the dream Katherine had before getting her digivice. However, that happened only once. “Yes, that might be it. There must be something related to those dreams. It could be a way of the spirit linked to your D-Tector trying to communicate with you.” Katherine had her index finger in her lower lip, trying to put some more thought into all of this.
“It could be useful for you to write down how those dreams are from now on. That might take you to meet your spirit.” Jazz finally joined the conversation, once she made sure everything inside the tent was set. “I don’t think she’s trying to meet them.” Katherine quickly corrected the pig-girl.
“It doesn’t matter. Judging from what we’ve seen, it is likely it’ll happen sooner or later.” Jazz replied, a deadpan on her face. “I guess it’s better for her to face that sooner. She’ll probably need some protection inside of this world anyway.” She had a point, Katherine had to admit. From what they had seen so far, it didn’t seem like a human could break the bond that tied them to this world that easily. However, it wasn’t like they had seen anyone try, except for maybe Liquid’s tamer, who effectively abandoned his digimon. Even though that happened after meeting him. And Yomi’s D-Tector didn’t seem to be willing to be abandoned.
“I think you might be right.” If that was the case, it was likely Yomi couldn’t go back home that easily. Not until she found her spirit. Of course, she’d have to try to find out. “Just… if you have another of those dreams, write down how they’re like. Maybe we can get a hint from there.” Katherine simply concluded.
In any case, there was another topic on the table now. “No way!” Katherine frowned, taking a scolding stance. “I can’t accept for you to sleep on the ground, Yomi. Never. You’re using my sleeping back.” She made her best to make clear she was NOT taking a no for an answer. And she meant it.
Jazz’s cheeks acquired a pink tone while Yomi looked at her, asking about her pig-suit. “I-I have tried!” She answered, a little startled at the question. As the glassed girl could probably imagine, this was something Katherine had asked before. “And I’m a bit scared to do it. It hurts.” She asked. “Besides, they are super comfy!” She then added, giving the human a thumbs up.
“I know there are some digimon capable of taking off parts of their suits. But I also know there’s some that just can’t. It’s like that is part of their data, not something they intentionally wear.” The theme of clothing on digimon seemed to vary from species to species. “I think Jazz might be the second case. The suit is a part of her, and she can’t take it off.” Katherine continued. “But yes, she can sleep on the ground. That armor can get really soft when it’s time to sleep so she’ll sleep like a baby.”
“Well…” Jazz turned her head towards Katherine’s bag, where the sleeping back was at. “I mean, you and Yomi could share that, Jasso.”
Katherine’s eyes widened, while she immediately waved her hands in front of her in a dismissing manner. “N-No way! I-I mean Yomi would probably be super uncomfortable with that and she’s our guest, we can’t do that too her…” She was now rambling. Doing stuff that only people that were close friends would do always made her get all nervous. Not because she wouldn’t agree on doing it, but because she always thought the other person never would.

"Soon, huh..."
Yomi gulped a little, hearing the tamer and her digimon prophet that the "Spirit" that the little device was connecting her to, would probably make a move. The idea was ... scary. If there was a creature that could pull her into this world, and command her from so far away, it had to be... powerful. Why would someone powerful need her? And from the sounds of it, she was not the only one either. There were others. Maybe they knew what to do?
"What are... other spirit wielders like?" - the girl managed to ask a question, before the conditions of their rest were being discussed. Katherine was so doting towards her, despite having more of her own share of problems on her plate. It was amazing and admirable in equal measure, and Yomi just looked at her with that look on her face, both impressed and grateful. Until... at least, the mention of sharing the bag came along. It was, perhaps, her reddest blush.
"Share the bag? No no no, impossible!" - she gasped, before covering her mouth with a hand, not wanting to appear rude. "I mean... Katherine-san is smaller, and the bag would probably not fit both of us anyway... You should be the one sleeping in it, really. You already did so much for me. I'm not sure I'll even fit in it by myself."
Yomi waved her hand, trying to protest with an awkward smile. Though from the looks the other two were giving her, it was unlikely she'd be able to wiggle out of this anyway. The girl looked at Katherine, then at her digimon, then at the girl again.
"I mean... we could try... somehow."
She had never shared a bed with anyone before.

“Well, then I don’t know what are we going to do, because there’s no way I’m letting you sleep on the ground.” Her arms crossed, Katherine puffed her cheeks. She had to put her foot down on this one! Even if this cave wasn’t her home, Yomi was her guest, and she wasn’t going to let her sleep on the ground.
Well… in the end, there was ONE possible solution.
Katherine let go a sigh. Her cheeks had acquired a soft red color. Even if the thing was actually pretty roomy, she never thought she would end up sharing a sleeping back with someone other than her digimon. Much less a girl she just met. To fully take advantage of the room given, they had to sleep sideways, so Katherine was giving her back at Yomi. Even if they were pretty close, it didn’t get to the point of being uncomfortable. That was a fairly big sleeping back, after all.
“Are you… feeling comfortable?” The green-eyed asked. Inside the tent, at some distance from their spot, Jazz was fast asleep. “That thing you asked about other spirit wielders…” She muttered. “I don’t know many, but I think they are so cool~!” She couldn’t help but let a bit of her fangirlism get the best of her. “There's this girl, Amelie. She is the leader of that group building the city I mentioned. She's a spirit wielder too and one of my best friends. I’m actually expecting her to help you get back home. You’ll meet her as soon as we get to the settlement tomorrow morning.”
The darkness of the night covered the whole tent and the cave. The sound of the storm happening outside was the only noise echoing through the cave. However, it was not as defeating as when they arrived. Maybe the weather was starting to calm down? Hopefully, they needed to get out of there in the morning.
“I’m… glad I found you, Yomi.”

”I hope your friend could help me get home… But… what do you mean she’s building a city? Is it about Helm’s Deep?” – the silly Japanese girl once more mispronounced it’s name, but she was curious about what it was. However, the curiosity of a city being built out there somewhere soon gave way to more practical problems.
Like fitting in the sleeping bag, together.
After about 15 minutes of pushing, groaning, grinding, and shoving, the two girls managed to fit inside the sleeping bag, which was normally fit for Katherine alone. Yomi felt … very awkward about the entire ordeal, but it was a situation where an unstoppable force met an immovable object, or in this case, Kathy’s big-heartedness versus Yomi’s politeness. The former could not let a poor trapped girl out in the wilderness to sleep on the floor, and neither could Yomi deny her gracious host to sleep in her own sleeping bag.
So, here they were, sleeping back to back. Wearing clothes, which were all hiked up because of how narrow and tightly-fit the bag was. It was a good thing they could not see each other’s faces, because Yomi’s looked like she had spent a day at the beach without sunscreen. She was remaining completely still, afraid to move a muscle and cause more skin contact that was already happening at the moment. I must not move, I must not shift, I must not breathe or do anything… Gosh this is so awkward… I wonder if she’s thinking I’m weird. I bet she does… But I’m not! This is just an unfortunate set of circumstances, it’s not like I’m…
Her trainwreck of thoughts was briefly interrupted by the question coming from behind, asking if she was feeling comfortable. With Kathy being a few inches shorter, she could feel the warm air on the back of her neck.
”I, uhhh… yes, a bit tight, but very comfortable and warm and everything… Don’t worry~” – Yomi replied, before falling quiet. A sudden realization coming to her head. She’s probably feeling just as awkward as I am. I should not bother her with my own worries.” – she thought to herself, as Kathy talked about other spirit users and how amazing they were. The girl made it sound like a most special and exciting thing, a type of attention Yomi always wanted. But at the same time, the girl was scared about what would becoming such an individual meant. Her device was not looking friendly at all.
Yomi was brought out of her gloomy thoughts again by the small, soft phrase spoken into her back at the end of it. The girl remained quiet, for a bit longer. Though... the thought of someone caring about her, despite barely knowing her, was making her... happy. She sank into the bag a little, feeling herself cozier and more familiar with the warmth coming from behind, and breathed out:
"I'm glad it was you who found me..."

Trying to contain it, Katherine pressed her face against the rubber of the upper part of the sleeping back. Unable to compel, she released a short burst of laughter, only some seconds after Yomi finished her sentence. It was really funny how she had some trouble remembering complicated names about stuff in the Digital World. “Deeplane-City.” She corrected her, still containing her giggling, trying to not wake Jazz up. That would most likely never happen, though. Much like in her Lopmon form, that pig-girl was a very deep sleeper, so they were probably fine.
“Yes. As I kind of mentioned earlier, she’s trying to provide a safe place for digimon inside the Dark Area. That’s why she recruited us, and Jazz and I, along with a whole group of humans and digimon, are helping her fulfill this objective.” It definitely hadn’t been an easy task so far, and there was still a long way to go, but talking about this filled Katherine with… a bit of pride, even. “She’s very nice, you’ll most definitely meet her tomorrow.”
Trying to drift her thoughts from the awkwardness of sharing a sleeping back with a teenager she had just met some hours ago, Katherine tried to think about what should their plan be once the sun risen. A part of her felt she could be spending her last moments with Yomi before her departure tomorrow to go back to the human world. However, another part felt that her digivice wouldn’t let her keep herself away from this world and its creatures, and they would meet again. The latter of those thoughts definitely scared her, because she didn’t know how Yomi would react to that. Maybe it was the right time to warn her about this, but she couldn’t get herself to do it. Not when she was so close to accomplish her objective and so excited to go back home.
Maybe the best thing to do was to wait, and see how everything developed tomorrow.
Katherine’s eyes widened once when her ears finally caught a response from Yomi, regarding the last sentence she had uttered. Her lips opened up a bit, and she let go a short gasp.
“Y-You… mean that?”
Lowering her eyes, Katherine just felt comfortable enough to confess something.
“I was very scared when Morwena was trying to talk you out of going with me earlier today. I thought you wouldn’t trust me and would rather staying there with her.” A small pause ensued these words, until she broke the silence again. “To be honest, I’ve never been too good at socializing and I tend to get afraid of getting close to people or trying to make them think they can rely on me. Probably because I’m afraid to let them down or that they just get bored of me and leave me.” Why was she even telling this to Yomi? Maybe she just felt the occasion was set. Maybe she had been holding these thoughts for too long. And even when she had left some of them back at the real world, a part of growing was accepting she once had them. It was a way of reminding herself that she was different now, and she was aiming for a change. For the sake of everyone.
“I guess, what I’m trying to say is… Holding your hand at that exact moment is one of the scariest things I ever had to do in my whole life. Because it meant I was telling someone they could trust me.” A small sigh came right after.
“I’m a bit afraid of letting you down.”

Yomi remained quiet as she heard Katherine's words spoken into her back.
All those hidden flaws, worries, and fears surfacing, something that she never expected such a brave hero to even have. But then again, it was the side that books did not always show. The hero having a softer, more vulnerable side. The fact she was showing this to Yomi was a sign of trust... Something she knew not what she did to earn. Maybe she was just... harmless enough to be told all of these things? No, it felt like... something else.
As Kathy told her about how she felt about Morwena,Yomi remained silent, her cheeks flushing with a little bit of redness. It meant a lot, to be considered trustworthy enough to be a ... confidant, of sorts. She knew she could not share her worries and thoughts with many people... Even good friends. As the girl felt they would think less of her if she told them. Yomi never turned over her shoulder to look at the girl behind her. But her hand did reach back, and found Kathy's wrist, wrapping her fingers around it. Holding it like that for a little while. Before breathing out, and speaking:
"You didn't need to worry about Morwena... I may be a coward and a very mediocre person otherwise, but I know to read people a bit. You had my best interests in mind... She wanted to have a girl around to wash her dishes and pick up small things with fingers. It was... very brave of you, what you did."
Yomi felt silent, though her squeeze around Kathy's wrist tightened a little, almost clingy-like.
"You don't give yourself credit. You're the best person anyone could wish for... I just... I wish I could be half as good of a friend you were to me for the past few days."

Feeling Yomi’s grip around her wrist, sort of gave Katherine a warm sensation. After what had occurred in the Human World, she was slowly starting to open up to people, and this was definitely being the proof that it brought positive results. “I don’t… like when you say bad things about yourself.” She muttered. Even if Yomi couldn’t see her expression right now, it was one that denoted a bit of annoyance. “I don’t think you’re coward or mediocre.” In all honesty, Yomi's concepts about herself were probably about to be proven wrong. This world took the best or the worst out of every person, Katherine had verified this for herself in the past.
“I think it also requires braveness to decide leaving a place where you are relatively safe to go face a world of unknown creatures just to go back home. Many people would rather stay where they are” Slowly, and without really noticing, Katherine squeezed herself a bit against Yomi’s back. “I suppose knowing someone needed my help, made my brave at that moment too.”
When she listened to her peer's last sentence, Katherine drew her body even closer to Yomi, while her right arm went over Yomi’s side and gave her a warm hug from the back. Now that she had left the awkwardness behind and was just enjoying her time there, sleeping this close to someone felt nice, and was definitely helping her withstand the cold of the cave.
Katherine let go a sigh. Now that she was feeling this comfortable, she was finally starting to feel sleepy. “You’re an amazing friend. And I’m sure we’ll have the chance of spending very fun times together that doesn’t involve sleeping on a murky cave due to a thunderstorm…” She yawned softly, before being able to finish her sentence. “… happening outside.”
It definitely wasn’t long before Katherine fell asleep. On one side, she kind of thought that it was inappropriate for her to fall sleep hugging Yomi. But on the other side... it felt so nice! That was the perfect stance for sleeping. It gave her a pretty warm and cozy sensation.

Yomi remained quiet, hearing Kathy's whispers to the back of her head.
It felt strangely comfortable, and very warm, with her cutely cuddling against the taller japanese girl's back, while saying these nice things. The girl saw the other as a friend already, just like those whom she left back at home when the portal warped her here. But at the same time it was ... different. Kathy was not like any other of her friends. What exactly the difference was, Yomi had a hunch about, but was not brave enough to say, even to herself.
"Ara?"
The girl with the broken glasses felt an arm wrapping around her waist.
She blushed a little, but did not pull away from the hug. Friends allowed hugging one another, right? And besides, it felt much... safer that way. The little bit of tension vanished, and Yomi breathed out, smiling, and looking into the darkness outside, as the storm raged on. The fire was slowly getting dimmer and dimmer, sentencing the cave into blackness, only so seldom interrupted by a flash of crimson lightning outside.
Yomi heard the girl behind her fall quiet and numb, her breathing becoming softer, measured. She was already asleep, with the hand still around her waist. She didn't mind though, instead bringing her hand back and wrapping her fingers around the hand on her stomach. Closing her eyes, and let out another breath of relief. Feeling warm, safe, and not alone in this world, Yomi fell asleep. And had a peaceful rest, maybe for the first time since the beginning of her bizarre adventure.
