Holly was nervous, extremely so to the point of where she was fidgeting sitting on this overturned boulder amidst the plains outside of the Library. It was the first time she really came out here past the white water trip or the fishing with her sister.
But those times were both sort of peaceful; or rather had been intended to be peaceful. Now? Well her father had spoken to her about training to fight; a spar to teach her how to go about things in her forms. Well she figured it'd be multiple form as she had two.
It didn't make her any less nervous thinking about it like that; she wanted to learn! Not fight! It made her stomach crawl and butterflies picked up time and time again. She'd nibble at one of her claws staring quietly out across the fields.
After all it had been a good morning of book reading, some food prepared by her mother and then... Well he asked her to come out here for this reason. She didn't want to but considering he had spoken to her about it before and her mother seemed to approve... She didn't have any reason really to try to push the issue further even if she didn't like it.
"Mei... What if one of us gets hurt... or... or..."
The meicoomon didn't know her own strength, or what she was further capable of. As far as she was aware? Well all she could manage was the champion and the rookie forms. The prior to those lay somewhat in a silly territory as far as combat went and she doubted she'd ever really deal with that. Sighing softly she'd run her paws through her fur and rocked on the boulder a bit.
No she was still capable of so much more, but her desire to remain peaceful was holding her back. But would her father notice that this early? Or perhaps he'd just simply place it with the already known potential of her 'aptitude'?

"Don't worry, Holly. If anything happens, I'm here to patch it up."
The doctor, of course, could tell that Holly was quite nervous for her first time. She'd never practiced fighting before, nor did she have any true desire to become a fighter, but that didn't mean this could be ignored. So, he kept his tone positive, a confident smile on his face and tone to let Holly know that he was in complete control of the situation.
Besides, he was taking his own precautions: he had already dulled his own claws this morning, in preparation for this. Stretching out his back, he'd give a nod towards the Meicoomon, instructing her to stand up and come forward from the boulder. "We're going to start with your Meicoomon form today, Holly. Before we get into a practice bout, I do need to see an example of what you can do. And so..."
Rather than have her work with a live target, the cat moved to an open clearing, and set up something far simpler - a small log of wood - for her to focus her efforts on.
"Let me see everything you can use in your rookie form, once. Then I'll see where we can go from there, alright?"

"I still.. can't help but worry Da I'm sorry!"
Holly sighed a little bit and kept fidgeting, she wans't aware of the precautions or what her father wanted to really do past fight. She didn't know what process he wanted to go through or the like. She'd blink a few times however when he spoke again, instructing her to come off of the boulder. Sighing sweetly she'd hop off of it and slowly make her way over to her Da.
"Okay... That makes sense. Cause it's better to do this than my other one at the start..."
The meicoomon trailed off in a mumble and followed after him nervously fidgeting as they went. He wanted to see everything she could do? She'd blink and frown a little bit before slowly nodding, staring at the target he set up. It was nice that she wasn't actually fighting yet. It would help her work through this nervous pit in her stomach.
"All right Da..."
The meicoomon stopped fidgeting and furrowed her brow in thought for a moment. She was still a good distance away from the log, and then suddenly she simply was gone! Her Flicker putting her behind the log in a near instant.
The next? Well she'd light up her tendrils with some electricity and stab into the wood of the log. Though all it'd end up doing is burning it rather badly for a short time. Some decent damage for somethign required in melee. Her Lightning-tendrils seemed like it would also require a touch of set up if she didn't want to get hurt on the backfoot.
Moving away from where she struck before? Well the Doctor would see her daughter take a familiar dark aura around one of her paws. She'd glance down at it and strike at the log which immediately found itself having several dark needles stabbing through it's surfaces. Eating away at the wood of the log for a fair amount of time.
"I uh... My body heals itself when I get hurt. Like really quickly... I can... show you if you want to see that Da?"
The meicoomon shifted a little bit and rubbed at her muzzle, behind her the log would crumble in half as the shadow-stitches ate through the data of the log.

Mikemon had a basic idea of what Holly could do, so he would simply sit back and observe, a confident nod given to her daughter as she started.
Her flicker, as well as her lightning tendrils, made sense enough: It seems she's gotten a lot from her mom. A blink, and a direct attack with livewire like tendrils... and... oh?
That third attack was somewhat surprising. It was another direct strike, but this one was left with a dark 'patch', needles arcing out and striking back against the log. His eyes widened a bit in surprise with that, hidden somewhat with a nod as Holly explained her regeneration. "No, there's no need to demonstrate it. I've got a good picture already: your rookie is a direct combat type."
He was confident in his tone, but he'd move to explain: "Though you like a fireball or ranged attack like your sister has, if you can get close to your opponent, you can win in a close-ranged fight. Most importantly, you should be learning how to use your flickers to teleport into an opponent's blind spot, to follow up with a direct strike in the next moment. I, um... know its not the most comfortable thing to think of."
Regardless, they needed to make progress on this, somehow. Going back to the boulder, Mikemon would reach into his bag, and pull out a small red handkerchief, stuffing it halfway into his left glove.
"So, your first goal is to use your 'blink' and try and steal this flag from me."

"A direct combat type?"
Holly blinked a few times and tilted her head a little bit when he moved to explain. She didn't have any ranged attacks in this form, which meant she had to get closer. Which also meant that she could win in a close ranged fight? But what if her... She should use her flicker to teleport into an opponent's blind spot? She'd furrow her brow a little bit and look down at her paws.
"So get in close... flicker... hit them with... something I... It's... hard to really think about hurting other people Da. I don't really like it."
She'd admit quietly and watch her father go get that small red handkerchief. She'd make a curious sound and tilt her head as he stuffed it into his left glove. She'd blink dubiously a few times and scratch at her head before modding slowly.
"From... behind like uh. This right?"
The meicoomon vanished on the spot again, though she wasn't really confident and her swipe to try to grab that handkerchief was wild at best. For someone that was expecting it well... Her father probably would just avoid it with a simple ease! But that didn't change what he asked her to do.

So, what will she do?
Holly definitely wasn't used to this - heck, she wasn't used to fighting at all. "Don't think of it as 'hurting others'. Think of it as either 'learning to protect yourself', or just 'protecting yourself'. Unfortunately, this isn't a world where one can get by just on pacifism."
Aside from that, Holly would give her first attempt. And yes - it was clear that the Meicoomon only had the most basic idea of what she was doing here. At that first blink, it might appear that Holly did what was asked - slipping to where the cat wasn't looking, and taking a swipe at the flag - but that was met with a single sidestep, and a hearty grip of his arm over her shoulder.
"You're not going to sneak up on me like that. Look below." He would motion for Holly to look down - and nod to her shadow, cast right on the rock in front of them. "You won't get in close like that, Holly. Think about it - I saw that you vanished, you looked right at the spot you wanted to teleport to, and you landed in a spot where I could figure out your position."
He explained her errors, calmly, a polite smile on his face.
"I know you've got a good head on you. Don't rush it - think it through, Holly." He'd give a nod: "Give it another try."

"But... I.. It just feels so wrong Da even when I think of it like that... I.. I'll try.."
The meicoomon's shoulders sagged a little bit from that; it was really hard for her to get past that and it would be something that would constantly be problematic for her. Heck she still thought about the seadramon that she probably ended up hurting with that lightning throw of hers.
Her first attempt unfortunately led to failure; that hearty grip of the arm over her shoulder making her squirm a little bit. She'd blink a few times and look down to see her shadow. It was cast right on the rock in front of them and she'd simply furrow her brow slowly.
"Okay."
Positioning.
Eyeline.
Intial knowledge of my location.
And something to give him a view of where I appeared.
She'd put a paw up to her mouth thoughtfully and stared at that shadow for a few moments. She'd flcik an ear and stare back up at her Da after giving a small nod.
"Okay. Lets see."
The meicoomon if allowed would trot back to the position that she was in before. Staring at her dad she'd tilt her head a little bit. Eyes going to several different spots and shaking her head just a little bit.
So if I go one way... teleport the other...
Holly scratched at her head after a few moments and furrowed her brow deeper. She'd slowly drawl out, each word as though she was really giving thought to it.
"I don't have a real way of making people not looking at me. So if they see me vanish they look behind them or to where they can't see. But if they follow my eyeline to where they think I'm going to be I can use that to 'blink' to where they wouldn't look first. Like look left but go right?"
The meicoomon would of course demonstrate what she meant taking a little bit of a running start followed by her looking one way and vanishing during the next. Keeping in mind where the Mikemon's head and eyes were. Though her paw still went for that red hankerchief, she wasn't expecting to grab it this time even if she was coming from the opposite way she was looking. Even so she'd follow with.
"But then there's time to think of, locations, how the weather and lighting is too right? Like here you have a shadow to actually look at and you know I'm here and what I can do... Kinda."

This much progress already?
Mikemon wasn't going to talk her through every bit of it - rather, he wanted to see what Holly could figure out on her own. Keeping his position, he'd see that she took the words to heart. She charged from the front, which was a decent mix-up, giving her another option to approach. However, this would end much the same as the last: with Mikemon's hand around Holly's wrist as she tried to reach for the handkerchief.
"You misunderstand, Holly. You do have a way to make people not look at you." He'd give a glance around - towards the rolling hills of the field, creating several shadows and hiding places, even in what would be considered a 'wide-open plains'.
Mikemon had considered her potential from the start:
"I'll just give you one more piece of advice, Holly." He gave a nod:
"You don't have to fight."
"You just have to win."

Holly blinked a little bit as that hand settled around her wrist when she tried to reach for the hankerchief. She'd blink a few times and look around following where he was looking. The environment.
He was telling her to use the environment. But how would that help her in distracting him? The meicoomon furrowed her brow a little bit and then he gave her more advice. She didn't have to fight? She just had to.. Win. So that meant she could...
The meicoomon stood there for a few long moments and just vanished from the spot she was standing. No words, no real warning of her doing so. Just that simple strange understanding that she was constantly exhibiting.
Elsewhere? Around? Well She had taken his advice in hiding, among the grass and waving reeds of this 'wide-open' plains. It was easy to understand that she couldn't just simply go for it. She had to wait for him, had to wait for what could be an eased opening.
Just wait.
Move when you can
Wait as you can.
Hide. Move. Hide. Move.
And so would a game of cat and mouse start in earnest. Though holly herself wasn't really good at it, as if she got too excited her tendrils would wiggle giving away where she was with rustling or from just simply being able to be seen...

Now she was starting to get it.
After Holly took that last bit of advice, she didn't respond with words, or even another question. No, she had taken that advice solely to heart, vanishing as she vanished on the spot, flickering to some unknown location. A quick glance forward, then one over his shoulder, proved that the Meicoomon was nowhere to be seen in his field of vision.
"... Alright, let's see what she can do." Rubbing the back of his nose with his free hand, the doctor's ears perked up, as he tried to get a gauge on his surroundings. He took a glance down, raising that hand with the handkerchief: aside from the occasional breeze, the flag stayed still, no significant wind in any direction. As noted before, the sun was currently behind him, his shadow cast both on the rock and the grass in front of him.
He'd already proven he could figure out her position by tracking the shadow, and as his ears stood up, twitching towards every rustle, it was apparent that the doctor had a decent enough sense of hearing as well. More to the point, when Holly's tendrils rustled in the distance, the cat took a pebble in hand, and tossed it in the Meicoomon's direction, bouncing just a few feet left of where she was watching.

Holly frowned a little bit flicking her ears some as she watched her Da, she could still see that flag in his glove and with the way that he had placed it it'd be hard for her to just simply grab it. Any movement would warn him about it and.... Oh.
She looked to the pebble that bounced a few feet left of her, gritting her teeth she'd have to go find another spot quickly. She had a few ideas of how to get that flag but honestly she wasn't exactly sure how to pull them off. The simplest one would just be too direct and the hardest one probably wouldn't work without a lot of set up.
So the meicoomon moved to another spot and took her time watching her Da. She'd consider for a short time just pouncing on him and taking it but she doubted that would work all too well. But that also gave her another thought.
He said she didn't have to fight.
But that didn't mean she couldn't be the one to instigate something to distract him from what she wanted to get from him. If she used her flicker to get close she could make a simple attack while also using a tendril to try to grab the flag! She'd have come from one side or... above.
So without so much as a word, The meicoomon did this again. With a more devilish intent. She'd flicker in, make a clumsy swipe with one of her paws at her father while one of her tendrils tried to grab at that handkerchief.

Calm down, Holly. I know you can think it through.
Well, this might take a while. Mikemon hadn't established a time limit, and in fact only gave Holly a tip by showing her where he thought her general location was. His ears were still poised, sensing a small rustle as the Meicoomon re-positioned herself against a different hill. Holly had the sense to move when discovered, at least, and not to make a fruitless attack.
But how would she close this distance? Mikemon remained calm - and, just as before, he'd see the shadow cast at him. This time, it had a different shape: she was attacking at a higher angle, and aimed right at him? Gritting his teeth, the cat side-stepped that initial swipe, only to see that tendril reach forward, and grasp around that handkerchief.
Clever... but...
Yes, Holly would grab the cloth - just as Mikemon would try and grab that arm, and toss the Meicoomon over her shoulder. If that motion connected right, Holly would find herself flipped right over, flat on her back, as Mikemon weighed a careful arm across her stomach.
But... she'd still have the red cloth caught in that tendril.
"Hm." He'd chuckle: "Well. Its pretty rough-looking... but I guess you pass the first test."

That intial swipe was met with a surprising move from her da, her shadow still lead him to be able to dodge that. But it didn't much matter as she was able to grasp that handkerchief. But then came the issue of... well how did she get away without him doing something that would-
And like that Mikemon grabbed that arm, tossing her over the shoulder with holly's face exhibiting an extreme level of surprise. Flipping over on her back with a hearty oof. She'd find her breath gone out of her chest as she sat there with a perplexed look on her face.
Her head turned a little bit to look at that cloth in her tendril, getting a little bit of a smile before looking back up at her da when he chuckled. She'd fold her ears to either side and then tilt her head just a little bit.
"To... be fair da I don't really... do this much. I'll get better in time though! I think."
If allowed the meicoomon would stand up a bit, brushing herself off and would offer the red cloth back to her father. She'd tilt her head to one side, furrow her brow just a little bit and scratch at her neck somewhat nervously.
"First test? There's more? Wait. Yes. Of course there'd be more. It'd be silly if it was just that..."
Holly made a somewhat exasperated sound and nervously fidgeted. She was giving off the sort of feeling that she didn't really know what all the mikemon expected from her in this first time through. As it was holly herself had come to naturally pass a lot of things that the mikemon seemed to set out. But was that really acting in her favor? Or was that just making him treat her different? It was hard to tell, but it was something she started to notice after that whole... Fishing incident. Biting her lip she'd ask softly.
"I'm not going to have to actually fight you am I da...?"

Of course, Mikemon would allow Holly to stand, pulling his weight away from that arm as he stood up himself. "Hm? Well, of course there's more than that - but, before we get to those tests..." The doctor's eyes would briefly focus, looking through the Meicoomon's data.
She had an incredible amount of potential - but there was something she lacked. Experience. When she asked if she was going to fight him, he shook his head: "There are a few steps we'll have to take first. Your idea was good, but your moves are unrefined. Not only do you hesitate, but your inexperience with 'hitting' makes your strike speed far slower than it would need to be. So, test number two."
With this, Mikemon would take a minute to set up something else: placing two stones down in a clearing, the cat would look back around for his bag... ah, there it was. He'd retrieve a small plank, one that had been resting on the side of the rock, and set it on those two stones, the middle of the plank hanging in open air.
The cat would focus for a moment - before swinging his arm down, cleanly splitting the plank in two.
"This," he started, "Is to give you an idea of how a 'strike' should feel. Test two is to be able to split a plank in half, without using a technique - and without hurting your arm."

Holly shifted a little bit and furrowed her brow slightly as her assumption that they were not done was right. At that brief focus she'd nervously fidget; unsure of what exactly he was looking at. It was something she didn't really understand yet, that ability of his to look into data. Did it vary? Or was it set in a certain way? She'd let out an earnest sigh of relief when he shook his head.
"Well... I haven't had much of a reason to refine them or... to do this sort of thing I guess. Is ma good at this sort of thing?"
She was curious about her mother, in all their talks there wasn't much about this sort of thing. But it did really make sense to her that she was slow at striking, she felt hesitation, doubt and other emotions sort of pull her back making it hard for her to go through with it.
Holly bit her lip and watched her father set something up. Two stones, a small plank with the middle hanging up in the air. She'd frown a little bit and watch her da swing his arm splitting that plank in two.
He explained out that is how a strike should feel, that her second test was to split a plank in half without using a technique and without hurting her arm. She'd look down at her hands and then blink a few times moving to grab another plank to set on the rocks.
She'd stare at it for a few long moments before attempting the same thing. But unlike mikemon her 'strike' was rigid, less define and... well his didn't split open his hand. Grunting in pain she'd simply hold onto her paw, watching the nasty split slowly heal.
"Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong...."
And again. And again.
Each time she'd try something different, an alternate angle. A frustrating twist or the like. But she was struggling to put the real effort into it in the right places. She just didn't know how to really hit something. And it showed. Eventually she had to stop and hold her paw as the pain of splitting her hand over and over again was sort of getting to her.
"T-tch...."
The rolling frustration was having a drastic effect on her data. If mikemon looked it was bubbling and rolling on the surface trying to drag something else from down deep... Something that... was awfully like her mother.
