An Unlucky Break [Mikemon]

Carlos' gaze was locked on the bright white ceiling above him. Not because there was anything interesting to look at mind you, but because there was barely anything of note to look at the rather sterile looking med-bay of the Library.
Thanks to a mixture of sedatives and good ol digimon technology, the man was certainly doing better off than how he was a while ago, the pain coursing through his body now numbed and calmed down despite the fact the wound in his stomach was still not fully healed. He looked down and winced at the sight of the bloody rags and bandages covering the hole in his gut. Even with the help of Mikemon's power that water jet had done a nasty number on him, another grim reminder of the sheer difference in power between the inhabitants of the Digital World and the average human.
Huddled close to him was Dio, still in his in training form Pagumon and currently enjoying a well deserved nap. After that downright brutal encounter it was not the least bit surprising he had fallen asleep as soon as his rotund body made it to the other side of the portal. Even though the small nap during the operation had been more than welcome, Carlos knew it would be better for his health if he rested for a bit longer as well.
And yet...cheating death so narrowly was still but a small comfort to him, at least for the time being. Ever since he had learned the sheer scale of the conflict going on, the conflict he had just been dragged away from, he had been feeling something of a huge void within him.
Really, had their fight even mattered in the grand scheme of things? Just getting rid of two foes was not that noteworthy a victory, especially knowing that their "part" in this battle was more than likely over.
"How long do you plan on keeping me here?" He wondered, eyes looking at the ceiling again, letting out a frustrated sigh.

These last few hours were anything but easy, for Carlos or Mikemon.
The tamer didn't get to his current state without great effort, after all. With Carlos' insides practically rearranged by that Aquary Pressure, the doctor had to work both efficiently and quickly with his patient. At the very least, however, the cat managed to work through the worst of it. Right now, Carlos just had to follow the Pagumon's lead, and try and sleep this off like a bad itch.
... Of course, it wasn't going to be that easy. Having just put a fresh set of bandages over Carlos' wound, Mikemon's ear twitched at that question. At that, Mikemon simply let out an audible 'tsk' between his fangs, turning off the water as he flicked his hands over the sink. "Seriously, you have a hole in your stomach, and you're thinking about getting up?" He paused, and closed his eyes, shaking his head. "Thirty-six hours, at the very least. Its way too early for you to be moving again - you'd be liable to simply rip open that stitching again."
And really, that was that! Well, the cat wished it were that easy. Drying off his hands, he'd once more climb up onto that seat, simply taking a moment to 'take it all in'. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he just asked:
"So how the heck did you get involved in all this?"

Carlos looked back at the Doctor, silent disbelief in his eyes. Thirty-six whole hours? IN any other situation, having such a serious injury heal that fast would be nothing short of amazing. And really, it was. But by then it would be too late for him to help in any meaningful way.
"God damn it." He cursed under his breath. He would have gladly been a lot more loud and visibly upset, were it not for the fact his partner was asleep. He rubbed his temples, sighing loudly. He didn't know what was worse, the fact he couldn't help out, or the day and a half of boredom ahead of him. Hopefully the Doc could lend him a book to read or something.
Of course, Mikemon asked the rather obvious question of how things got that bad. Carlos shrugged a bit.
"More or less like we always do: wrong place at the wrong time: we were taking a break around, when we heard the first explosion. Obviously, we went to investigate and found those two causing chaos...and around that time Mae jumped into the fray and began attacking them." He paused and tried to sit up, but the sudden spike of pain forced him to keep lying down. "Granted, I didn't know it was her until after the battle but...what else were we supposed to do? Just walk away?"
Well, since it was clear he didn't feel like sleeping, might as well try to make the most of this conversation, right? There were one or two things he wanted to ask. For starters,
"So how did you find us so quickly?"

At the moment, Mikemon wasn't going to comment on Carlos' frustration. Dumb as it might have been, the cat didn't want to encourage him to try to move or act, especially since he seemed to be a cooperative patient. "I'll see what I can do about dragging a TV in here - or, push comes to shove, I'm sure someone can lend you a DS or something."
Carlos' explanation quickly reached the cat's ears... so they were just in the area? Must have been visiting the Village of Beginnings, or helping out with the Rosewood project - okay, so that checked out, at least. Mae, too? "No, you didn't do the wrong thing, Carlos. I know from defending the library that you're quite capable. Just... don't do anything stupid now, alright?" But, of course, Carlos returned the question.
Figuring he would be here a while, the cat crawled up, sitting on the foot of the bed. "Because I was in the area, too - though, at the perimeter." He gave a nod: "Part of being a doctor in the Digital World, and holding a license, is the obligation to answer in times of crisis. My straw got pulled, and thus I was obligated to go out and help however I could. Aside from that... well, I could pick out another former demon lord's signal from a mile away."
He gave a sigh, shaking his head. Would the cat have to go back out there, and leave Carlos here?
"... I'm going to be honest, I'm worried. Between K in the Dark area and Haru in the desert, well, these things just keep on happening. Hopefully, this is the last time."

"That'd be nice, but if it's too much trouble just lend me a book or something, I'm not picky." He said, shrugging a bit but sounding genuenly grateful. At the very least the Doctor was willing to try to make his stay here as bearable as possible. Hell, a DS actually sounded kinda fun.
And while he also appreciated the Doc's reasuring words, his mention of the Library attack made him sigh sadly a bit. Being a human in such situations was more a liability than anything else when digimon were involved, wasn't it? His recent incident was a proof of that.
"Don't worry, I already had my fill of stupidity for the day." He quipped as he rolled his eyes a bit, but he knew Mikemon had been rather accurate: it had been stupid for him to leave the safety of his hideout so recklessly to help Dio, it had been stupid to get captured so easily and it had been incredibly stupid to understimate just how far would someone go in a hostage situation. Maybe if he had stopped for a minute and planned things through...he wouldn't have a hole in his stomach.
That said, it was obvious he wasn't the only one having a hard time, seeing how Mikemon was clearly as overworked as always. "Geez, talk about a raw deal. Sure hope you're getting a medal after its all over. Or a raise." That was sure a lot of responsability being trusted upon a single individual. Even for a former demon lord that wasn't a small task. Speaking of demon lords though, his comment about being able to feel Dio's signal caught his attention.
"Really? That's useful...can't believe he really had that in him, though." He chuckled, shaking his head. Truth be told, he was still a bit mesmerized after seeing his partner transform into that hulking mass of muscle and anger. "Guess we can't make fun of his "Dark Lord" related rants anymore, can we?"
He frowned a bit however. He'd be lying if he said he didn't understand how Mikemon was feeling. The seemingly never ending string of incidents was nothing short of worrisome. "You and me both..." He replied, absentmindedly patting the Pagumon's head. Hearing the Doctor refer to Haru sent a cold shiver down his spine. He too was still uncomfortable thinking about it, so much so it had been the reason he had avoided the Library in general the past week or so. He glanced at the cat. "Say...is it dumb I want to be there just to make sure K and the rest are fine? I know just us wouldn't make that big a difference, but I would feel a lot more at ease if I could be to their side and...I don't know, keep an eye out for them?"
Was it for worry that he wanted to keep the people he knew safe? Or was it some sort of warped guilt over not even finding out something had happened to Haru for the longest time? It was hard to tell, and something he rather not dwell on, to be frank. "I really hope this is the last one too."

"Well, it ain't hard to find a book in the Library." He gave a small chuckle at that - at least something to break the tension of the moment.
Unfortunately, that wouldn't remain the tone for long. "Well, at this point, I'm not really hurting for a raise or anything like that - but I doubt I'll get too much recognition as a medic. And don't worry, he's still the 'Dork Lord' to me, Carlos." As the Pagumon couldn't hear it, the doctor enjoyed that cheap shot as he could get it in... but... yeah.
Even for Mikemon, sitting here and doing nothing about it was starting to feel 'off'. He briefly considered Carlos' question, and shook his head. "... Its not dumb at all. They're fighting, for the sake of our world. And if you weren't hurt, I'd bet Dio would be dragging you right on the front line to stand up to... 'whatever' is going on."
And that was the problem: 'whatever'. Even now, in this late stage, all he really knew was that there was potentially a Wisemon acting as the mastermind, and that the statues were the targets. But who could have expected such a blind raid? They hoped this would be the last, but the cat didn't seem so confident...
"Tch." He shook his head. "I much preferred exploring an underwater city and making fun of Dio for his awkward social interactions. Or having your help running a beach-side clinic, or... just raising Syre. I know this world's rough, but trust me, most of us don't want to fight at all. At least, not to this extent."

To have someone be so casual about Dio's Demon Lord status, even go so far as to keep giving him silly names was rather refreshing, and for a moment Carlos forgot it was something that should be kept in secret.
"Heh, I'm just surprised he hasn't been able to come up with a good nickname for you, Doc."
Funnily enough, Dio seemed to mumble out something indecipherable, as if even in his sleep could hear the Doctor and Carlos mentioning his name. This was met by a gentle head pat from the man. The cat was right, he'd certainly be eager to fight yet again, and would happily drag the human along if he could.
"And I'd glady fight back 'whatever' it is that's out there." He said, a determined spark in his eyes, that quietly was replaced by a far less serious expression. "...and then I'd probably end up here yet again, since we already established that I have a talent for sustaining life threatening injuries." Even with Carlos' ironic tone it was clear there was some curiosity. After all, while he was for all intents and purposes Dio's power source, that also made him his most vulnerable weak spot, as this past incident had showed.
"Odd question, you uhm...wouldn't happen to know a way for me to avoid those in the future, right? And please don't say "don't do anything stupid"."
He'd sigh sadly a bit however, when he considered the implication of Mikemon using the word "whatever" for this conflict. So he didn't really know what the big picture was either. That was rather concerning, to say the very least, yet somehow a bit reassuring: it was nice to not be the only one in the dark, for once. It was pointless to ask more about it then, so trying to find a silver lining was probably the best choice.
"Well, when this is over I wouldn't mind going for a drink with you, K...maybe not with Syre just yet, I don't really know how drinking age works with Digimon." Though with that comment soon came a rather obvious question, one that he found himself asking without really thinking, though he made a conscious effort to cover Dio's ears as best he could, just in case. "Uhm, any news about K or...anyone else for that matter?"

"Oh, gods, don't encourage him." Sarcastic in both his tone and eyeroll, Mikemon was glad to lighten up the mood for at least a moment. But, Carlos had a point: he did end up on the bad side of things. The book, the smoke fire, the Witchmon... it was natural to think he was doing something wrong.
And as he asked for non-sarcastic advice, Mikemon would return it:
"Well, you do sports? Cardio, anything?" The cat would tilt his head, curious. "Point one, I'd stick to be in at least earshot of Dio, so you're less likely to get 'picked off' at the side. Along with that, I'd simply work on your 'core' - er, the human sense, not the Digital sense." Perhaps an example would be better: "I know a tamer whose a Tennis player, and his partner barely has to think about protecting him. Keen, aware of his surroundings, and quick on his feet. I'm not saying you need to be an athlete, but just because we're crazy, magical monsters doesn't mean you need to stay helpless."
That might have been a little more involved than what Carlos was looking for, but honestly, it was the best answer the cat could give. And unfortunately, it wasn't an easy answer. As for the rest of the club?
"Let me think... Ayumi wasn't anywhere near the incident, and Haru hasn't left the Library at all. As for K, well, Vander Tower's fairly close to that. If I know her, she's not going to stay out of things for very long - especially if the fire and fighting get too closer to her."
That said, the cat chuckled.
"Don't worry about K. The level of power she has is... well, obscene, really."

"You mean like jogging every day?" The man asked, curious, before letting the cat finish giving him some honest advice. While it wasn't exactly the answer he was expecting, it was still valuable information and advice he would try to put to good use. "Well, I guess I could hit up the gym or something to that effect when I get better." He said before pausing, looking down at his bandaged body, then at Mikemon. "But truth be told I was thinking something even a bit more...proactive, if that makes sense."
He scratched the back of his head, looking a bit contemplative. How was the best way to approach the Doctor about something that would almost definitely be dangerous to his well being? Well, probably being as direct and blunt as possible. "So I heard about this thing called Biomerging? Something that's supposedly like a spirit wielder does but instead of using a spirit it's with a normal digimon partner? I don't know I figured maybe that could...I don't know, let me help Dio more than being just a power source." The man would sigh however, looking down at his stil sleeping partner, scratching the Pagumon's head somewhat absentmindedly as he looked back at the Doctor, "Or is that an even worse idea?"
Other than that though? Carlos couldn't help but feel just a bit worried knowing Mae and Ayumi were out there in the field, but there wasn't much that he could do about it, sadly, so instead he tried to focus on the more positive. That being, the fact K would be getting involved soon.
"Heh, yeah, I'm not too concerned for K, I know she can take care of herself and then some."

"Proactive, huh... unfortunately, there's a pretty hard - and low - limit that humans can reach compared to Digimon. There's stuff you can do to improve your situational awareness and 'shotcalling', but that's still a matter of movement and positioning."
Unfortunately, that was the hard truth. Unlike Dio, Carlos simply wasn't built to take the hits. There was one thing that might help - that Carlos hit right on the head. Biomerging.
"... Its not that its a good or bad idea... its just not something that's easy to practice." Mikemon's answer was blunt in return. "I'm sure you've seen it before: Digimon tend to change forms based on a 'trigger' or a 'need'. Even if I told you the process, it would be unlikely that you and Dio would be able to biomerge... if the two of you are even compatible for it to begin with."
The doctor wished he could provide more help here - but he'd done what he set out to do. Carlos was stable, awake, and aware. More importantly, Stingmon was available to watch over his condition. He gave a sigh, once more putting that medic band over his arm.
His task wasn't done.
"Anyway. The call button will ring Stingmon out to help you, and I'll tell him to get the old TV in here. I'm still obligated to head out as a rescue doctor." He hopped down, stretching out his arms, deciding it would be better to make the portal out in the hall.
"I'll be back to check on you and Dio in the evening." He gave a smile, forcing a confident expression on his face as he gave a wave, before slipping out of the room.
