Jen had definitely missed a turn somewhere.
All she’d wanted to do was take Cheeto to that intersection with all the crosswalks. It seemed like a good place to begin a day of sightseeing, especially since she’d gone there before. But on the way there, she zoned out for a few minutes, and next thing she knew, she was surrounded by this putrid smell. A smell she didn't recognize at all.
She plopped her backpack down in the grass and pulled out her phone. She had to straighten this out. But while she was absorbed in Google Maps, trying to match the buildings around her to the gray blobs on the screen, that backpack started to wiggle. And zip itself open.
“It’s smelly,” said Cheeto, nose sticking out of the bag. Not that that would discourage him. He’d found a place he’d never seen before, and he was going to stick his nose into every corner of it! Even if it got even smellier.
So he unzipped the zipper the rest of the way and pushed himself out of the backpack, landing in the crunchy grass.
Meanwhile, Jen was just about finishing up. “Okay,” she said. “I think I got it. Ready, Cheeto?” No response. “Cheeto?”
She lifted her head up from the screen to find Cheeto several yards in front of her. “How did--? Cheeto!” And she threw on her backpack and ran after him.

It was probably not a healthy idea to go chasing rumors when you were bored. It was probably an even worse idea to go chasing rumors with the person that -told- you said rumors. That being said, Akemi and Anzu didn't necessarily have much else to do with their day, so they naturally opted to go pursue the idea that the Shibuya River had a portal to the Digital World.
It stank around here. Anzu could tell that much even while hidden in a handbag. "...Does this place accept constructive criticism? 'Cause it sucks." The bean said, poking her head out from the bag to look around. Akemi began to speak, "It can't really hear you. It's a pla--..." She trailed off as she saw a odd sight in front.
A girl chasing after a Digimon that looked like an orange Anzu. Speaking of, she was just staring at Cheeto. "...Huh, it's me but orange."

Oh, geez. That wasn’t another person up ahead, was it? The threat of losing Cheeto was bad enough, but how on Earth was Jen going to explain this to someone?
At least she wouldn’t have to worry about catching Cheeto anymore, because he practically skidded to a halt right in front of this person. Upon seeing that, Jen started to slow down herself. And she noticed there was a Digimon poking their head out of the girl’s bag. They looked exactly the same as Cheeto, only in purple. Oh, thank god. Another tamer.
Jen came to a stop as she approached them. “Sorry...about that,” she managed to say between pants. “I really need to look after him more. Come on, Cheeto. I’m ready to go.”
But Cheeto didn’t even hear her. He was staring up at the handbag, absorbed in the Digimon inside it. “It’s me,” he said in an awed whisper-shout. “But purple!”

...There was something humorous Akemi just realized--This girl named her Digimon Cheeto. Of all the things to name what looked like a pretty holy bean...She chose Cheeto. Well, it was pretty apt--Patamon look like cheetos from a distance anyways. What was kind of odder was the girl apologizing to the duo.
What did she even do to slight them? Probably nothing. "Uh...It's alright. I don't think you did anything wrong, though? Guinea pigs will be guinea pigs, it seems..." This Cheeto really did seem a little like Anzu did in this form. The Tsukaimon pulled herself out of the handbag and pointed at Cheeto.
Dramatically, at that. "Yeah, and you're just me but orange!"

Jen froze, processing what the girl had said. “You have a point,” she admitted. It wasn’t like she or Cheeto had really done anything. Besides interrupt them, and they didn’t seem to be that busy. “I guess it just seemed like the right thing to say.” She smiled and looked down at Cheeto. “Heh. Guinea pig.” She supposed she could see the resemblance.
When the other Digimon pointed at Cheeto, he mirrored the action with a laugh. But his smile fell as he processed her words. “Really?” He looked back at Jen. “Which is it?”
“Um…” That was a weird question. “It depends on your perspective. You saw yourself first, so you see a purple Cheeto. But since they saw themself first--”
Cheeto’s eyes widened. “Purple Cheeto sees Orange Purple Cheeto!”
“Yeah!” Good thing he understood; she wasn’t ready to get even more philosophical. “But please don’t call them Purple Cheeto. That’s rude.”
“Okay!” Cheeto turned back to his look-alike. “What’s your name?”

"Uh..." This conversation had gotten oddly philosophical with the twin beans. "I guess it depends on which one of them existed first, yes..." Akemi mused out loud, before Anzu huffed and puffed her cheeks out.
"Hey! I'm not a purple Cheeto! You're a cheeto, you cheeto!" Yeah, it was rude enough to provoke a reaction out of Anzu. "Leeet's...not start anything over who's a cheeto, okay?" Akemi told the Tsukaimon before she looked towards Jen. Then back to Cheeto.
Anzu seemed to calm down at the drop of a hat. "Oh, uh, I'm Anzu. I guess you're Cheeto?" That wasn't a guess, that was already pretty obvious. Akemi just shook her head. "I'm Amaya Akemi, nice to meet you."

Cheeto only smiled at the Digimon’s comment, not fazed at all. “That’s right! I am!”
Jen was surprised at how quickly Anzu’s mood changed. But hey, at least that meant things wouldn’t escalate. “I’m Jeanette Milani, but just Jen is fine.” She gave them a pleasant smile. “Nice to meet you, too!”
“Anzu. Okay!” Cheeto nodded vigorously. “Yep! I’m Cheetooooo!”
“Yeah, he...picked that name himself. I said he looked like a cheeto, and he really liked the word, so that’s his name now.” She shrugged. “Anyway, it’s nice to see another tamer around! I’m still new to this whole Digimon thing, so...good to know I’m not alone.” Technically, she already knew she wasn’t alone, but still. It was good for Cheeto to meet other Digimon.
Speaking of which, Cheeto was now flapping his wings and kicking off the ground. “Can you fly, too, Anzu?”

Anzu had a small feeling that this digimon was a little bit younger than she was. Then again, she had no way of actually determining that. Akemi meanwhile gave Jeanette a nod. Sheee kind of sounded like she wasn't from around here, was she? That was alright.
She'd met plenty of people with foreign names before. "Oh, likewise! There's plenty of tamers around Shibuya, I've found. So it's not as lonely an occupation as it might seem at first. But...Yeah, neither of us are alone." She stated, with a shrug.
Anzu gave Cheeto a look and pointed at her own ears. "Of course I can fly, silly! Tsukaimon and Patamon are almost exactly alike and stuff!" She pouted as she flapped out of the bag she was in.

“That’s good to hear!” Jen said. “Of course, it probably isn’t wise to just go up to someone and ask ‘Hey, do you have a Digimon?’, but I’ll have to keep that in mind.”
Ah. So Anzu was also called a Tsukaimon. It reminded Jen of how Cheeto had said he was also called a Patamon. Who knew just how many species--or...sub-species?--of Digimon there were?
“Tsu...kai...mon…” Cheeto repeated. Flapping his wings, he glided over to the edge of the river...which was less of a river and more of a long, windy dumpster. “So does that mean you can do everything else I can do, too? Like Boom Bubble!” He puffed himself up like a blowfish and spewed an air shot right onto the garbage. The blow was strong enough to send an empty soup can sailing towards Jen’s foot.
“Be careful, Cheeto!” Jen kicked the can to send it back into the trench. It rolled to a stop on the edge, so she had to run up to it and kick it again. “I don’t think you should be flying so close to the river.”

"I mean...They'd probably look at you weird if they didn't. And probably go 'the heck's a Digiwhat' and other assorted questions." Akemi said, before the thought of that made her snerk a little bit. Anzu meanwhile nodded at Cheeto. "Yep. Tsukaimon. Uh, I don't have those abilities. I don't think I do, at least. Uh, we're more known for insulting people so hard it hurts." The bean explained.
Akemi blinked at the power of the Boom Bubble. Was that really the power of a lot of compressed air? Huh... "...Yeah, it's pretty dangerous around here. Especially if you end up falling in. Because then you're in a sea of garbage! Germs and stuff!" The girl put a hand on her hip, only for Anzu to stick her tongue out. "I mean, we're next to you so that's probably an imp--"
Anzu promptly got cut off by Akemi taking a single step over to her before a thwip at the forehead was administered. "OW!"

Akemi had a point. The thought was pretty funny, someone going “Digi-man? Is that one of those smartphone apple-cations?”
But right now Jen was focused on Cheeto, hoping something wouldn’t happen. “You can do that?” he said to Anzu’s comment. “I wanna try!”
Luckily, Akemi started to speak before he could continue. And he started his descent, landing about a foot from the edge of the river. Jen was now free to pay attention to what Akemi and Anzu were saying.
Anzu hadn’t been kidding about the insults. “You know each other well, I s—”
“Is that a germ?”
Jen’s head snapped up to look at Cheeto, still standing by the river and pointing—as well as his little hand could point, anyway—at the river.
“No. See, germs are so small, you can’t see them.” Despite not having to look to answer the question, Jen walked over. She was curious what he was pointing at.
It appeared to be an empty chip bag, floating there in the murky brown water. Normally that would have been the end of it, and Jen would go back, but there was something else. The water around the bag formed a sort of whirlpool, carrying the bag around in circles, even though the rest of the water was stagnant.
“...That’s weird.”

"Hey, don't try that, you'll probably just end up making someone...actually get mad." Cheeto kind of reminded Anzu of someone--though she couldn't quite place her finger on who. The Tsukaimon followed the Patamon down--mostly to keep watch and mostly to keep talking to him.
"Oh, no, that's no germ." She agreed with what Jen had said. Akemi peered towards the floating bag. A whirlpool in the river? "...Is that what I think it is...?" The girl wondered aloud, before Anzu turned and snapped right up at her,
"Heck no, that's way too small to be the portal! It's gotta be huger!"

Cheeto nodded at what Anzu said. He didn’t want to make anyone mad.
One word in particular had caught Jen’s attention. “Portal?” She turned to Anzu, then Akemi. “What do you mean? Or…did I hear that wrong?” She looked back down at the whirlpool. A portal in the river? That had certainly come out of nowhere. But if something like Digimon could exist in this world, she supposed anything was possible.
Cheeto seemed confused, too. “Por...tal?” His face snapped into a big grin smile. “Like the pretty light I went through?”
“What pretty light?”
“The pretty light that took me from the Digimon to the hu-mon!” He looked back into the river. “But that doesn’t look very glowy.”
“Wait, so...” Jen closed her eyes to think. “Does that mean...?” She closed her to collect her thoughts. “So there’s some kind of otherworldly business going on?”

"That could count as a portal." Anzu noted. That was the key word here. Could. Akemi gave Jeanette a glance. "We heard something about a portal from the river to the Digital World--where Anzu and Cheeto both hail from. In fact, we came here to give it a looksie if that makes sense." Her gaze then moved from Jen and Cheeto to the river.
"Unfortunately, neither of us had the foresight to realize that it's probably buried under all this trash. Which...would probably make it a health hazard. That's also otherworldly. So yeah, you'd be correct in that regard." The girl finished her explanation before Anzu butted in with, "I mainly wanna know where in the world it leads. There's another portal at the station, but that just leads to Terminus. This? Nobody's said anything about where this goes."

Jen waited until both Akemi and Anzu were finished speaking before saying anything. “Ah, okay.” She ran her fingers through her hair, combing a knot out of it. “Figures these guys come from another world.”
“Tummy-nus! Uh, Ter-mee-nus!” Cheeto said. “I was gonna go there! But then I saw the light.” His wings dropped. “Lopmon’s probably mad…”
“Lopmon?”
“She’s our group leader. She was gonna take us to Blimpmon so he could fly us to Tum...Terminus.” He paused for a moment, then added “She said it’s a biiiig city.”
“I see,” Jen said. “Maybe we should go back sometime and let her know you’re okay. How long has it been, a couple months now?” She stared down at the river. If it was portal, then should they…?
No, no, nonono, no, no. Never. She shuddered to think about it.
But still, the mystery of this river was...fascinating. Was there any way to figure out where it went?
Her head shot up. “This is gonna sound weird, but...would you happen to have a camera you don’t mind getting dirty?”
