Walking In My Shoes [Chester]

"A mobile building... on treads. That's, that's great. Really." Chester gulped but also, curiously, smiled. Maybe the longer this went on the easier it was getting on him to accept new, absurd information. Other dimensions? Strange monsters? Human-digimon bonds? A mobile edifice was much easier to swallow by comparison. Heck, that was actually possible in the human world, at least theoretically. Now he had something familiar to latch onto. "That's some impressive engineering!" That sounded like good reason to rush to the library, but Chester also remembered, "But like you said, we can't really go back without one of those 'hologram suits' for Shiro."
That bear seemed much less impressed by the city than Chester was. He wasn't as concerned about all the lights as all the digimon about. One particular Lekismon had a real dirty look on her face as she walked by and began to scold Chester, "What are you doing? You can't keep a digimon on a l-" The normally rational point she was trying to make was undercut when Shiro growled and snapped at her, and it was only with a yank on the leash that the bear's jaws failed to wrap around the Lekismon's leg. Suddenly she seemed OK enough with the sight of a digimon on a leash to walk on by.
"Shiro, you can't just- come on, bud." Chester was certainly wowed by the environment, but for different reasons than maybe Yuki and Mizu might have expected. "Y'know, I expected something like...not just a city."

"Ah, y-y-y-eah. W-w-w-we don't know who built it, Ayumi just purchased the building because she was wowed by the facilities and was eager to tinker with it." Yukiko gave an awkward smile, though that quickly vanished when Shiro tried to attack the Lekismon. She tried her best to help Chester hold back the leash, apologizing profusely to the rabbit. "Aaaaah, sorry sorry!" Once the bear was reined in, she heaved a sigh. "Y-y-yeah, lets get him the hologuise and then get to the library, I feel like he could cause some trouble in this city..." As they walked, Yuki listened to Chester talk. "E-e-e-h? What did you expect, then?"

"Thanks for that," was how Chester expressed his gratitude for the extra help with Shiro along with an exhausted yet relieved sigh to relieve the tension. "I expected more..." Chester struggled with an answer that didn't make him sound ignorant while his head was on a swivel for every sight around the city. Eventually he decided on, "I thought there'd be, like... things that don't make sense. Visible distortions in space or floating islands and underwater towns. This feels kind of... well, tame. Almost human-like." As a Sealsdramon passed the group on the sidewalk he reemphasized the word he'd just used, "Almost." Unfortunately, Chester completely agreed with Yuki's assessment of Shiro; the longer he was in this space, the more likely he was to be trouble. "Forget about this city. I don't know how I'm gonna keep him from making a mess in our city."

Upon hearing what Chester was expecting, Mizu entered a small gigglefit. "Huhuhuhuhu, just you wait until you see our map of the Digital World then! It'll blow your mind!~" She left it at that, causing Yukiko to blush with awkwardness. "E-e-e-eh, w-w-well, we better hurry and get that holosuit, so we can get Shiro out of here. M-m-m-maybe Ayumi can find a way to keep him calmer while wearing it. She's, like, incredibly smart after all..." Yuki just hurried down the street, now wanting to get the purchase over with fast so they could avoid further awkwardness with Shiro's wildness. There was nothing worse than awkwardness for her. Soon enough they had reached the inconspicuous shop selling the gadgets. It didnt look like much, but there was always more to it than it seems, as the old saying says!

Now this was the most wrong part of the digital world of all. Here portal openers, diving supplies, even weapons were on display, with price tags, like it was no big deal. What the heck? Oh, well. Chester remembered the object Yukiko recommended and sought it out. "Uh, holosuit, holosuit..." And there it was. Apparently it came in many different sizes and forms, but the best one for Chester, so he thought, was the one in the shape of a collar. Collar went on, instant disguise. Collar came off, back to normal. Chester wasn't sure he could trust Shiro to know how to operate one by himself (or to actually use it), so the answer was obvious. "One holosuit, please. Oh, wait, I don't have any-"
Beep beep. Chester checked that odd little device in his pocket, and it gave him a number: 3,180. There was also a symbol he didn't recognize, but it was the same one next to all of the price tags. "...oh. OK. One holosuit, please." Chester was told by the shopkeep he had to select an image for projection, too. Well, he didn't have one. But there were some in stock and one that he thought would do the job.
"Right... let's hope this fools humans, at least."

Indeed, the amount of things on sale here was dizzying! And the transactions were simple, too! They were done surprisingly fast, and soon Shiro looked like a big dog! Yukiko was relieved that Shiro did not cause trouble in the shop! "Ah, y-y-yeah, that dog should do the trick! It looks real to me!" "Yeah, that sure is a dog! Anyway, let's get to the library already!" Mizu seemed antsy to go there, likely because she wanted to revel in Chester's sheer bafflement at the building. Yuki, though, was a bit slower. "Ah, b-b-b-efore we do that, is there anything you w-w-wanted to do in Terminus first, Chester?"

Chester was thoroughly convinced by the illusion after looking away from Shiro and back again. "Wow, that's... not bad at all." Yukiko and even the smart mouth Mizu both confirmed the illusion sold, too. Of course, Chester discovered that the fur didn't feel quite right, like Shiro's instead of a dog's. But the worst part? Shiro did not take kindly to his new neck jewelry. Soon as Chester snapped it on, he started to scratch at it with both paws and try to slip it. The young man was afraid he might make it too tight as he attached it, but now he was feeling validated that Shiro couldn't get it off. "Come on, boy, you need that. Please don't do this."
Grrrrrr.
"Come on, we gotta go." As Chester pulled his Leith to escort him out, Shiro did not become violent, but he didn't give up trying to rip or slip that collar either. "Maybe we should get to that library of yours. I don't think Shiro wants to wear a leash for much longer, and I don't want him to learn how easy it is to O-V-E-R-P-O-W-E-R an H-U-M-A-N."

"Eh, don'tcha worry about your lapbear overpowering you, Yuki can teach him a lesson! You see those guns on the girl? She can lift cars, I tell ya!~" Yukiko blushed and stammered when Mizu drew attention to body, and quickly turned around to walk off. "L-l-l-l-ll-et's just walk to the city outskirts!" Mizu ended up giggling, and waddled after her.
It was a bit of a walk, but soon the quartet smelled the fresh air of the vast plains outside of Terminus. There seemed to be little besides roads, groves, and the occasional house in the distance. At least, until Yukiko pulled out her Digivice and talked to someone. "H-h-hey, Usako, s-s-sorry to bother you, but, c-c-could you move the library to the West Gate? We got someone here who wants to s-s-see it! Ah, p-p-p-please dont overwork yourself!" After hanging up, she waited. And, after a while, something happened. Something appeared over the horizon. A large array of towers, spires, buildings and smokestacks, puffing its way across the hills on immense tank treads. It moved closer, slowly but without pause, until it stopped, just a short walk away, towering tall over the four people below. "This...is the Great Moving Library, our base of operation...sh-sh-shall we go inside?"

'Lapbear?' That term forced Chester to chuff, which he tried to conceal but only after it was too late to do so. "I don't think Yuki really wants to wrestle Shiro." He knowingly glanced at her out of the corner of his eyes after that and gave her a look that suggested he was on her side with that. Unfortunately for her, he also did take the moment to examine Yukiko's arms as directed by her digimon. She's not kidding, though. He kept that to himself.
Chester did not have a problem with a walk in terms of his own physical fitness. He was just afraid Shiro would pull away from him given so much time. He threatened to a few times, too, sometimes out of curiosity but occasionally out of aggression. The man was glad to have a chance to stop and wait somewhere somewhat remote so he didn't have to worry so much about the bear causing any trouble. As he waited he asked, "Yukiko, be honest with me: do you not want me here? You're acting pretty nerv..." But his tone changed as the grand building rolled up to him. Suddenly he remembered this wasn't just a movie library; he could see for himself it was indeed a great moving library. "Y-ya gotta be k-kidding me!" Apparently, he was nervous enough that it was his turn to stutter. "That's it?"
Even Shiro was daunted. Both of them backed away from the building coming at them because, well, there was a building coming at them. It stopped safely far but also uncomfortably close. When Chester was asked if he wanted to go in, he needed a beat to breathe before answering, "A-after you."

Mizu, utterly unfazed by the approaching laboratory, huffed at the question Chester was about to ask. "Of course she wants you here, you dunce! She's just socially anxious!" Yuki, a bit upset over this unwanted assistance, just cleared her throat. "Y-y-y-yeah, let's go inside." And so, she fearlessly approached the building, approaching a door at the end of a small staircase on the inside of the right tank thread. The inside of the library, at least the tunnel they entered from, looked like an university basement, with linoleum floors, bare brick walls, and pipes overhead running to who-knows-where. Passing through this labyrinth, Yukiko eventually led the four of them into the first of many break rooms: a small, simplistic affair with a coffee machine, a sofa, a small television and a fridge. "Ah, I never asked, a-a-aanything you wanna see here? The main hall? The laboratories? The archive???"

Chester recoiled at Mizu's hostile answer to his, so it was intended, friendly and tension-easing question. Rather than snap back at some uppity talking frog or apologize himself, he liked Yukiko's suggestion of actually going inside of the architectural and intellectual marvel instead. Chester continued to pull a vocally reluctant polar bear behind himself by the leash and collar, holosuit deactivated since it wasn't necessary... and the boy didn't actually find out what kind of batteries it needs.
Ironically, the library was almost familiar territory in this bizarre world. Chester had certainly spent enough time in them to get very familiar with them, and the others might have even noticed that instead of anxious or excited, he'd suddenly become oddly calm. He certainly wasn't trouble by not knowing his way through the maze given that the walls were made of books. He even tried to scan some titles on his way. When Yukiko asked him about all the things he may want to see, he answered, "...Yes," knowing that wasn't a yes/no question. "I'm glad to see someone's got it right. This- this alternate dimension stuff, it's got countless implications for the studies of physics, chemistry, but also stuff you don't think about like my field of biology, zoology, evolution - I mean, look who I'm talking to. The movies don't really show that much. But I look at Shiro, and it's striking how closely he resembles a polar bear. The evolutionary history of these creatures has to be fascinating."
Chester paused. "Is there any way I could borrow a book or two on that? I can really sink my teeth into this sort of thing."

Mizu was a tad disappointed that the weird polarbear guy was so calm once he had entered the library. Come on, be a bit more amazed that this lab hallway has fossilized books for bricks! Ugh! Some people!
Yukiko gave a nod and an awkward smile. "A-a-a-ah, yeah, w-w-w-w-we could go to one of the many reading rooms! The walls here are made of books, yes, but..." She pulled on one. It had been completely mortared into the wall and did not budge. "...it would appear they serve a different purpose than to be read...r-r-r-regardless, the Biology Library isn't far from here, let me lead you!" The girl then opened a door, and strode down the hallway. Mortared brick books soon gave way to smooth, plastered walls, the ceiling was now covered in tiles, and the linoleum floor gave way to soft, grey carpet. Soon, the room opened up, leading towards a large gate with double glass doors. Yukiko opened these, and led Chester and Shiro into a *big* room, full of bookshelves. The walls were now made from wood, the cheap plywood shelves contrasted heavily with this. Some areas were blocked off with security tape, revealing unlit corridors and sparking cables behind them. But the still avaliable space was still nothing to sneeze at. A mounted skeleton of an Orochimon hung from the ceiling, and there was an aquarium in a far corner, where soft sofas invited readers to rest. "W-w-w-well, here we are!"

It was actually just then when Chester noticed that this room full of books was figuratively and literally built on books. "What a waste of what appear to be perfectly good books..." he softly lamented. Then again, the Field Club's choice of construction material for that hall was also a symbolic testament both to their mission and its apparent wild success. And so, he followed along Yukiko yet again, as this was still her show. "It seems really easy to get lost down here. How do you find your-" The young man cut himself off as Yukiko opened the way to another grand library. "Yuki, you don't know what I'd do to spend every afternoon I've got in a place like this."
Where was Chester even supposed to start? It wasn't like he could go scanning the shelves while Yukiko and Mizu were with him. No doubt neither of them had that kind of time. "This is an embarrassment of riches... and knowledge." With no apparent shame or modesty, the man made direct eye contact with his tour guide to ask her, "It looks like you've already solved a lot of these puzzles, but I would love to put my expertise to a little use in a place like this. What's it take to work for the Digital Field club?" He was so distracted, in fact, that he didn't notice Shiro wandering off toward the aquarium, rearing up on his hind legs, and trying to swipe at the fauna in it with one paw.

Yukiko blushed when Chester locked eyes with her. He seemed to be utterly enraptured by the Library, and had decided he wanted to join. She put her index fingers together and pressed them together nervously. "Well, uh, t-t-t-to join, you really just need to care about research, b-b-because we're a rather casual science club! A-a-and you gotta ask Ayumi, too, she's the other owner, after all!...she;s usually busy studying her ass off, but I am sure she'll use some time to approve of you!"
Meanwhile, Mizu waddled over to Shiro, watching him bat at the fish. She moved closer to the bear, and whispered: "Be careful not to break anything, or else the guardian of this place will come over you and make you regret having ever been born!"

Yes! Oh, this all was gonna make Chester's life a whole lot better. Getting to talk to this 'Ayumi' could lead to a whole lot of answers about this whole crazy digital world thing - and he'd have unlimited access to practically unlimited knowledge, to it appeared. If he didn't get a lot of answers, well, then he'd have a whole lot of questions and quite possibly the actual means to answer some. I see a headline in Gizmodo in my future.
Was Shiro going to pay Mizu any heed? For several moments, the jury was out. The bear cub did not flick his ears, look away from the water's surface, grunt, or otherwise give any indication that he'd actually heard Mizu at all. His paw, however, stopped batting, and his pupils dilated. Maybe he was considering his options after all. For a solid few seconds, his paw floated idly in the aquarium water, not grabbing at any fish. The air was tense, still, like the slightest movement would set off a bomb. "I guess we're even for the aquarium job, then. When do you think I might speak-"
The silence was broken only by a loud, crash! What happened between the two was that Shiro elected against minding Mizu, which was why he latched onto the rim of the tank with both paws, then lifted one hind leg. He tried to climb in, but all that got him was a fish tank on top of his body while he writhed and growled in futile annoyance. "...Can you speak to her for me?"
