A labyrinth-like landscape extended itself, as far as the eyes could see. Each passage, every corner, and even the smallest crevice contained a memory; whether insignificant or not, the information stored there was, to put simply, the ultimate expression of their owner's being.
Amber eyes stared at a mirror, a mix of irritation and frustration being clear on both. Despite millennia of accumulated knowledge, the herald hardly understood the task she was given. The pointlessness of it was astonishing, and sometimes, she wondered if her creator wasn't just… senile
She had gone through it at least a handful million of times; killing the girl, draining the spirits from their power and then finally breaking away from this endless cycle of servitude. And every time, the same conclusion was eventually reached.
There wasn't anything she could do. It was pointless to even think about it.
If she could describe it in any way, it would be as twisted. Was being conscious of her condition as a mere servant without any measure of real free will a mistake, or… something meant to be, all along? Did It mean to give her this treasonous attitude, this desire for freedom, only to remind her every time that those were wishful thoughts, and that her only release would be the two perishing together?
That was annoying. Very annoying.
Undoubtedly, the worst part was that being left to her own devices wasn't that bad; the worst she had to deal with was the occasional compulsion or sudden command. But… now? Her current situation was completely disgusting. Abhorrent wasn't even the beginning of it.
Not only she had to act as the babysitter of her creator's latest vessel; now, she also had to masquerade as one of those hairless apes, almost as if that were the newest fashion or something of the like. Excelling at human activities was hardly a challenge; rather, it mostly felt like a chore. What was the point? Why did a higher being like her creator insist on this… fascination, for mere fleshbags?
Like her previous line of thought suggested, the easy answer was to dismiss It as senile. An old being, too out of touch with the times to truly discern a worthwhile activity from one that wasn't. Something past its expiry date, without any real worth in the current times.
A relic. An antique.
Yet, as enticing as that prospect was, Ooi decided to not fall in the hubris that was that reasoning. Merely suggesting something like that ended in an obvious pitfall; it was too human.
Her reflection became all the more sickening to look at. A human's body felt like a cage; a useless container for a purpose that seemed beyond futile. Ugh. The more she dwelled on it, the more circular her logic became. She wouldn't arrive at any productive answers this way, would she?
She probably needed a breath of fresh air. Her thoughts were getting stale by now.
After exiting her room, Ooi gazed at the living room of her somewhat newly designated habitat.

Or more precisely, at the two thresholds in front of her; one led to the fleshbag's room. The other? Outside of the minuscule apartment. Maybe it could be described as too basic of a reaction, but the feeling of an open space to help her think made its presence on her mind once again. Stronger than ever, she wanted to go outside.
And so, she went there.
Tokyo's winter was undoubtedly on the cold side, even though the frigid air felt borderline exhilarating. Did it really help Ooi think? Hardly, but it helped to alleviate her frustration. At least to an extent. What to do? Where to go? Those were questions she wasn't so sure about. Her feet shuffled aimlessly through the sea of human beings carrying out their daily lives.
It struck her almost instantly. Yet, the realization managed to sicken her. That had been way too much time for something that should've been otherwise obvious.
Shibuya Train Terminal
Getting to access without her own digivice seemed like an inconvenience in paper, but considering the sheer volume of destined that entered and exited the hidden passageway on a daily basis… it was mostly a non-issue.
Her journey was mostly devoid of noteworthy events. These trips were always the same and were mostly comprised by a mismatched group of humans that for some reason or other haven't bought any portal program for their digivices yet. A good part of them seemed to be excited, their digimons matching those expressions.
As uneventful as it could be.
“Mind if I sit next to you?” Turning around to catch a glimpse of the owner of that voice, the dark-haired teenager gazed upon a very interesting visage.
“R-Ren?”
To say the least, she wasn't the only one surprised at the development!
“It's you, Ooi!? I can't believe it!”
Ren herself was a girl a couple of years ‘older’ than Ooi, even though her appearance was very good at hiding that fact. And that she was born Japanese, to boot. Bright blue eyes and light blonde hair —with its only noteworthy feature being a carefully dyed lock—, weren't signs of the usual Japanese person!
“But it's nice to see you, nonetheless! How is my favorite nurse doing?”
The unlikeliness of the situation wasn't lost to the girl, given that she went as far as to display awe in the face or no more and no less than one of her future teachers showing up in front of her. Obviously, that expression wasn't lost to Ren herself, who just wore an impish smirk at the development as soon as the initial feeling of surprise wore off.
“I-I'm not a nurse yet.” Was the initial, rather bashful response. “I'm not even a student yet. The exams are in-...”
“Two weeks. I know; I'm the teacher, remember?” Not missing a beat, for sure! “But you're the applicant who's shown the most enthusiasm thus far; at least this year! I'm sure you'll be a fine nurse once you’re done with the career.”
Flattery was definitely getting Ren places, at least if Ooi were to act in accordance to her human persona. In truth? Having to bear with another fleshbag made her internally sigh. Would it ever end?

Cheeks were soon powdered pink; just as a somewhat flustered teenager tried to wave off the praise. It needed to be hard to do, considering that it was coming from one of the top teachers of Tokyo's University. Pretty much a living idol, if human customs were to be followed.
Easy enough. It took a single question to do so. “Th-Thanks. To be honest, I didn't expect to find any familiar faces here.” Captain Obvious to the rescue. “Are you new on this whole Digimon deal too? Or do you have a partner and that stuff?”
Awkward. That was the only way to describe the nurse's face at the question. Had the teenager struck a nerve? Or was something else afoot? Maybe even… a situation similar to hers? Until Ren spoke, Ooi waited patiently.
“Why don't you come to my place at Terminus? I'm sure it'll be a nice learning experience to an aspiring nurse like you.”
A smile was worn while those sentences were uttered, but it didn't take a genius to know that there was something else behind. Despite her loathing having to deal with humans, especially when trying to get away from them in the first place, she had to... stay in character. And that demanded her to accept the request, despite the sense of alarm that Ren's words carried.
“Sure thing.” Was the understandably dubious response. “But that doesn't answer the ques-”
“Excellent! Once we reach Terminus’ Train Station, please follow me. It can a bit busy, so try and keep up; getting lost in there is an awful thing.”
Conclusion: not fishy at all, even though that only managed to awaken Ooi's curiosity. In the strictest sense of the word, she had zero reasons to worry about anything that might come from a human, and the nurse's disposition seemed to be fairly… normal, at least for their standards. Unless she had to deal with a Super Ultimate level, or a handful of Ultimate levels, the girl was confident in her chances.
Before any formal answer could be issued, a whistle signaled the train's stopping point, and its doors opening confirmed that statement. It was time to get down? Ren managed to remain fairly elusive, both in her step and in regards to what exactly was the nature of her relationship with digimons. Ooi noted how she hadn't bothered to ask about the exact nature of her relationship with them either, but concluded in that being mostly unsurprising. You didn't try to hide information while asking others for the same thing, after all.
After the initial trigger, the nurse's attitude had given a definite turn from her usual, cheerful and slightly teasing self to something completely unpredictable. And any leads on the possible reason were only shown as soon as the duo arrived a mid-sized, plain white building that was decorated by a fairly big red cross at its top. No other signs or distinct features could be observed.
“Here we are.” For a second, the teacher seemed to regain a bit of her previous demeanor. “Ladies first.”
Considering that she wasn't going through the motions to enter the building, Ooi took that as her cue to do so, even if the irony of it all wasn't lost to her.

The inside of the building was faithful to its outside appearance. The first sight that caught Ooi's eyes was the perfectly white main hall of what looked like a hospital… in the Digital World?
Displaying surprise at the development was natural, even though it didn't seem like that big of a deal; a nurse, moving onto the next world. ”So, you provide with medical services to any digimon in need of them? That is very noble of your part. How do you deal with not having a spare moment? Teaching and being in charge of two emergency services must be exhausting.”
Ren's smile was quite telling of how she felt at the moment; a kindred spirit, or at least somebody who understood all her struggles. Not quite validation, but almost there.
“It is. But… I think I owe him at least that much, don't you think?”
Before Ooi could even ask “What are you talking about?”, the nurse resumed her speech. “I guess this also answers your earlier question. My partner was deleted and absorbed long, long ago. Before I finished my studies and became a nurse, actually. The Digital World was very different back then; and even if now there are powerful digimon that are able to work literal miracles, the amount of potentially fatal injuries happening exceed their availability or power reserves handily. We’re not as good, but we’re here to try and alleviate that, more or less.”
That was all nice and good, but… “Yeah, I know. You're wondering why you're here.” Scary. “I like to think I have a good eye for this type of things. You don't seem like the type of girl that wants to become a nurse just for the pay; you see it as a calling. In a sense, I see a part of myself every time I look at you. And that's why I think I wouldn't lose anything by asking you to work with me in your spare time. Take it as a unique opportunity; with me, you'll get a great deal of field experience first hand, and will learn things at a pace that’d make any of your peers very envious.”
The surprises didn't cease, did they? That seemed like a very convenient excuse to drop her job at a book shop, but… “College won't pay itself, though. Being a nurse in knowledge isn't worth a lot unless I have the papers to back that up. You should know that more than anyone.”
A knowing look seemed to dispel those doubts away. And if it didn't, the following explanation would. “Well, yeah. But that's easily fixed; in here, you'll earn thrice as much money than in your current job. Easily; and even if that's not enough, I'll cover your college expenses. All of them.”
Was that even an offer that could be refused? It almost seemed way too good to be true! The teenager's hands were trembling; only after a couple of seconds, she nodded slightly.
“That does it then!” Ren seemed positively radiant at the development. “Let me show you around, but first… first, we need to get you into a uniform, of course!”
What could she say? This wasn't how Ooi had pictured her day ending. Or… beginning? It was hard to tell, even if… I could be called a golden opportunity, in ways that her “mentor” couldn't even imagine.
