One year. For the entirety of the past year, John and his partner, Casimeir, had been absent from Shibuya. What had them so preoccupied?
Throughout the year, portal after portal from the Digital World cropped up outside of the city. All of which John and casimeir had traveled to. Whether it was to investigate or contain, the pair worked dubiously as emissaries on behalf of AEGIS.
Thankfully, most of the Digimon who appeared were friendly and simply took a wrong turn which led them to the human world. But there were still certain Digimon with malicious intent. Together, John and Casimeir beat them back to where they came from and left them with a warning. A message that the world was defended.
At some point near the end of the twelve months in which they were gone, contact had been lost with AEGIS. Something wasn't sitting right with the human and Digimon. Whatever happened, John and casimeir needed to make their return and report in with the leader of their organization.
Then the reports came in of the Digimon attack on Shibuya. The appearance of the black spire. A towering obelisk that was very much alike to the one they encountered in the Digital World. If John and Casimeir's return were to ever be vital, now would be the time.
Outside of the AEGIS HQ building, Michael and his holo-suited partner stood. They remained stationary across the street from the main entrance; each taking in the sight of the structure.
"So it's still here," John murmured. His lips creased into a gentle, relieved smile. "Time to see Sophie and Lantis."

"'Scuse me," was all that a young man said to a couple of odd characters taking an unusual sort of sentimentality in stepping into essentially a small shopping mall. Only 16 and with a short buzzcut, this Shibuya native must have been coming straight from school since he was still in his school's uniform, even still wore his backpack. Overall he looked like a pretty unassuming kid except that as he slipped by the stranger he made a conscious effort to pull his shirt over something in his back left pocket.
After looking over his shoulder and being convinced no one was looking, the boy slipped inside AEGIS' secret entrance and, hopefully, out of sight of anyone not meant to know exactly who he was.
Only once he was free and clear did Tadayoshi uncover his left pocket, extract his Xros Loader from it, and speak into it, "Hey, guys, I made it. What'd I miss?"
"Another boring morning!" That was a shrill, high-pitched voice of a BlackTerriermon screaming through the boy's digivice loudly enough to make him recoil and grimace. "You said I was gonna get to cause some pain and get some action!"
"We're working on that... believe me." Tadayoshi gulped. He knew that girl was gonna hurt someone eventually, and he had to make sure it was someone he considered an enemy, not an ally. "Everyone else here, too?"
"Renamon on station," a female voice reported back.
"Every-"
"-single-"
"-Missimon-"
"-is-"
"-here-"
"-too!" apparently took six different alternative male and female voices to say, but at least it was said.
"I'm upstairs," was what the rather indeterminate voice of Hagurumon reported.
While that was happening, a message flashed on the screen of the Xros Loader: A-H: PRESENT. Those eight MetalKoromon couldn't speak, but at least they were able to communicate in some way. That just left the captain, who took a little longer to answer.
"Captain?" "Right here, General." Unlike the others, the unarmed Commandramon was there to meet Tadayoshi in person. He saluted Tadayoshi like normal, but wasn't normal was the grin on his face as he did it. "How was school?"
"Since when do you care how school was?" Tadayoshi asked somewhat warily. Commandramon couldn't come up with a quick answer. Tadayoshi frowned. "I appreciate the effort, but I'm fine. I can handle this." Commandramon dropped his fake smile. "...But really, though. Thanks. Anyway, I've gotta try and fit in some studying before work pulls me away. Tell whoever needs me I'll be in the conference room."

John and Casimeir watched with interest as the young boy walked past them and into the AEGIS HQ. The pair locked eyes with each other for a moment. "New member?" John asked the dog.
"Seems like it," the Shiba Inu replied. "Would make sense if there were new members. Especially if we've been gone for a year, give or take."
The partnered human eyed the relatively normal building again. "No time like the present. Let's head inside and give our report."
John slipped his hand down the neck of his shirt and pulled a lanyard from it. Attached was a keycard. With a fluid motion, he swiped the card through the strip. The glass doors slid open to grant the pair entry without delay.
The man found himself reminiscing for a moment. He didn't realize until now how much he missed these doors. This building. Working in the field for so long did indeed take its toll.
Past the doors rested the stairway. John and his partner wasted no time climbing the stairs They knew that over the horizon would be the reception area, and metaphorically, they'd be one step closer to reuniting with their fellow AEGIS agents.
The sound of their footfalls resounded off of the walls. In no time, John and Casimeir reached the top of the stairs. It was no surprise to see the kid from earlier, though he was greeted by the sight of a Commandramon. This was the first time he had seen one. To him, he thought of the military Digimon as an Agumon with camouflage skin and battle gear.
John and his disguised Digimon figured that Tadayoshi must have been someone of importance in AEGIS with how he was being saluted. The duo walked toward them thinking it would be a good idea to introduce themselves.
The pair stopped and straightened their postures. Casimeir's holo disguise dropped to reveal an Agumon. "Hello. I'm John. This is Casimeir. It's nice to meet you."

Tadayoshi and Commandramon had taken a single step away each when the greeting from behind them made them both look over their shoulders at the stranger. "Huh?" New faces were especially an oddity in such a secret, secure location. However, the lanyard around the man's neck was quite clear: this stranger belonged here. "You're... an agent?" Tadayoshi's accent was heavily Japanese and not very sure of itself, signalling his lack of fluency on John's language of choice. He was, however, able to recognize a greeting when he saw one and return it in English, too. "I'm Tadayoshi Teppei, and he is Commandramon. It's nice to meet you." After his and Commandramon's polite bows, however, that was where his ability ended. He stuttered for words for a moment before speaking to Commandramon instead of John.
In turn, Commandramon was able to translate in better English, "'I thought I met every other agent already. Did Miss Sophie recently recruit you? While she's away I'm one of the acting co-chief agents here, but it makes sense she didn't have time to tell us everything.'"

"Pleasure to meet you both," John responded with a returning bow for Tadoyashi. "That's right. Cas and I are agents."
The pair felt a mutual understanding when the new faces inquired about their membership. They were relieved that the Commandramon acted as a translator. At least, John was. Casimeir had the ability to speak in Tadoyashi's native tongue.
John continued to speak, taking breaks every now and again to let Casimeir translate for him. "Casimeir and I are two of the founding members for AEGIS. We understand why you'd think we were new. Unfortunately, the two of us have been abroad on different missions for the organization. When we got word that there was trouble, we dropped everything to come here and regroup."

What John did not know was that AEGIS had gotten new members while he was away. A couple of the new members of AEGIS were now just beginning to return: a Tamer pair, Johan Walker and his partner Dokamon. They had just gone out to the shops for some snacks and electronic parts, so that Johan can mess around with the tech inside of AEGIS.
"Are you sure that the others will be okay with you messing around with their tech?" Dokamon asked as they walked up to the living quarters of AEGIS HQ.
"Well I am doing it so that we can improve our security systems," Johan responded in his British accent, holding a bag of electronic parts in his right hand and a back of snacks in his left. "I'm going to try and find cracks in the system and patch them up, just so that others don't do it first. Besides, it gives me a chance to improve my hacking skills."
As soon as they got upstairs, they walked in and noticed Tadayoshi and his crew... as well as some unfamiliar faces. One was a blonde-haired human, who was definitely the oldest looking one and was definitely not Japanese, and by his side was an Agumon who Johan assumed was the human's partner.
"Er... hello there, sir," Johan greeted the man in English. "I don't think I've seen you around here before. Are you a new agent? What's your name?"
"Good day, Top," Dokamon said to Commandramon as he nodded.

Both the teenager and the soldier's eyes opened a little wider when John, through an Agumon, claimed to be a founding agent of AEGIS. Apparently they didn't know just who they were or what they looked like. Before they could express too much amazement, though, Johan and Dokamon also greeted their fellow agents. "Oh, Johan, Dokamon! Guys, er, these are John and... and..." The reason he trailed off was that he had completely forgotten how to pronounce that Agumon's name. He glanced at Commandramon with the hope that the captain might have managed it, but he, too, made a face that expressed he couldn't do it either. "Oh, gosh, I'm so sorry."
"As am I." Commandramon inclined his head in the newly arrived pair's direction. "Johan. Dokamon."
"I'll contact Sophie and tell her you've returned, but I'm not expecting a reply any time soon. I think she's-"
"-General, Talon 1 reporting."
"Excuse me, please. Work." Tadayoshi plucked his Xros Loader from his pocket, the same one a female voice had just rung from, and spoke to it. "Go ahead."
"No anomalies detected."
"Sorry, Captain." Commandramon frowned but shrugged. "Hagurumon, do me a favor and open a window on the top floor."
"I will."
"Talon, coming home."
Tadayoshi explained, "'Talon' are a Jetmon and a pair of Rocketmon. Just routine patrol. Camera surveillance isn't perfect, y'know? Anyway, I'm glad you're here. Things aren't perfect right now."

Yet more new faces made themselves known to John and his Digimon partner. It wasn't a bad thing, John and Casimeir were more than happy for the opportunity to make some new friends. It was equally important to build camaraderie with one's teammates.
The partnered pair addressed Johan and Dokamon with warm smiles. "I wouldn't have expected you to see us around. Name's John, this is Casimeir. And no. We aren't new agents."
"That's right," Casimeir chimed in. "John and I are two of the founding members. And you guys can call me Cas for short if it's easier!"
John looked a tad sheepish now that he was gripping the nape of his neck with a heavy hand. "Again we are so sorry that we weren't present during the emergency." There was a breath filled with regret which passed his lips. "We don't know the details."
The normal light in Casimeir's eyes faded somewhat as did his smile. "We were hoping you guys could fill us in on what happened."

"Cas? Cas. Alright, I can remember that. I can explain the situation, too. See that?" Tadayoshi pointed out the window at a sight Cas and John must have noticed on their way in: a construction tarp covering up a gaping hole in an office building just across and down the street a little "And that?" While the building was still under repair, the road was freshly paved. "You can't see anymore, but the street was full of giant bullet holes a few days ago - through no fault of our own." That addendum was to make clear Yoshi didn't accuse Commandramon of wrongdoing when he caused those bullet holes. "I don't think the human world's seen anything like what happened here before. Two ultimate level digimon set up a control spire right in the street across from us. Five Tamer pairs like you four answered Sophie's emergency call for help, and my team were the only AEGIS agents on station with an ultimate form the spire couldn't disable. So, we led the defense in the field while Miss Sophie advised us from here."
Tadayoshi sighed. "The best we were able to do was hold them off. Their spire had these- these special effects that made fighting harder, and these enemies were very strong. The battle caused moderate damage to surroundings, at least for ultimate level combat in the middle of Tokyo." The 16-year-old boy crossed his arms. "We were completely humiliated when DATS, apparently reactivated, showed up and took over our defense. DATS negotiated a surrender with the invaders, demolished the spire, and sent us all home... but not without scolding us for doing our jobs."
"They told us AEGIS can continue operations as long as it's convenient for them... which won't be forever, mark my words. Their commander vowed to expel every last digimon by the time their work was done. I shouldn't have to explain to an agent like you why we can't just let the refugees, the asylum seekers, the peaceful, the partnered be purged, but..." Finally the boy who seemed so sure of himself admitted, "I don't know what to do. Miss Sophie took some leave to clear her head after the incident, leaving myself and her little brother Colin in charge in the meantime."
After a few moments of letting that sink in, Tadayoshi ended that monologue with a bitterly sarcastic, "Welcome home, agents."

Johan and Dokamon both sweatdropped when Tadayoshi and Commandramon had both failed to remember the Agumon's name. Was it really that hard of a name to remember? At the moment they just kinda shrugged it off, facing the newcomers to see what their names were.
Of course the human confirmed that his name was indeed John. However, the Agumon's name was very weird: "Casimeir." NOW Johan and Dokamon understood what the Xros General was feeling at the time. "Case-my-er? No, that's not it... that's a very unique name."
"What are you talking about? His name is Casimeir," Dokamon said, actually being able to pronounce it properly with no problem at all. "It is not that hard to pronounce it."
After introductions were done with, Cas had revealed that they were in fact founding members of AEGIS. "You're founding members? Then where have you two been all this time, may I ask?"
The two of them apologized for not being there for the emergency and asked for details surrounding it. Johan and Dokamon were both asleep during that time of the attack so they sadly were not present during the battle. Tadayoshi was however, and he probably explained it as best as anyone could. He explained their special spire that made fighting the invaders even harder, and in the end the battle completely destroyed Scramble Crossing. Then DATS came onto the scene and essentially was turned into the enemy for AEGIS.
The monologue left Johan and Dokamon both feeling useless and pathetic. How could they have missed something that important? And even worse, they still can't do anything about it. Johan hasn't been an agent for very long, and now his agency is on the brink of collapse at any moment.
"We couldn't be there for that initial fight," Dokamon spoke up, "but mark my words, I refuse to go down without a fight. We will continue operations as normal, and if DATS wants to get in our way, then I say we bulldoze them down. It's not their say whether or not we get to stay in this world."

A cloak of anxiety threatened to curl around John now that his absence was questioned a second time. He didn't blame Johan, though. The Tamer pair did just arrive. The man smiled understandably.
"Cas and me were out on an ongoing assignment," he explained. The Agumon nodded to confirm. Then, he spoke up to add to the explanation. "Ms. Sophie had us handling some missions abroad. We came back as soon as we got an S.O.S. But, well...We wish we could have come back sooner."
Johan's verbal promise stoked the fires of passion in the souls of John and Casimeir. "To think we almost joined DATS, once," John murmured. He had an annoyed tone. "AEGIS was formed to mirror DATS. We were inspired by them."
Casimeir's expression darkened. "And now they're a threat to Digimon."

Tadayoshi couldn't let Dokamon's proclamation go unchallenged. Gutsy and noble as Dokamon wanted it to be, it was also reckless and headstrong, something that the boy had to nip in the bud lest the two of them cause AEGIS any more trouble with them. "That is not going to happen, agents," he directly contradicted them, "Our truce with DATS depends on staying out of their way. If a change in that policy is to be adapted, that call isn't for you to make - or me, for that matter." The problem was Yoshi thought the only one qualified to make a decision like that was intentionally distancing herself from it. Still, "Until Miss Sophie comes back, none of us interfere with DATS." Yoshi looked at John, Cas, Johan, and Dokamon each in turn so they all knew it applied to them. "We're gonna do our jobs, keep our noses clean, and keep the moral high ground... until the time is right."
The others may have been able to sense this topic was starting to distress Tadayoshi. He had just raised his voice a little, something unusual for him outside the field, and he appeared more alert than a moment earlier. Additionally, he took his first opportunity to change the subject entirely: "But I am glad to have you two back. How soon do think you can return to duty here?"

"Answer me this: exactly when did I say I was planning on going out there and actively trying to find DATS myself?" Dokamon asked, challenging Tadayoshi's argument. "I am not an idiot, Tadayoshi. I already know about the truce. But I do not expect them to follow through with it for very long. And if they do not, I will not just turn the other cheek."
"I think he's just trying to say that we won't be pushed around, Yoshi," Johan said, trying to diffuse the situation. "Please don't start a fight. We just got back from the store, and John has just returned."
"Very well," Dokamon nodded, acknowledging Johan's wishes. "I am a bit too peckish to even do any attacks, anyway."
"Ah right, I almost forgot," Johan said, turning back towards John and Casimeir. "Are you two hungry? Dokamon and I were going to make dinner tonight and it'd be nice if you could join us. How about you, Tadayoshi?"
Hopefully this would make everyone a bit less tense...

John and Caismeir both felt the mood in the room shift. The others expressed their concerns that the subject might have to get changed. They agreed. Worrying over what-ifs and the like might cause unwanted stress for the group.
The partnered human finally let go of his breath through a sigh. "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."
The moment that food was mentioned, a low grumble came from the human and the reptile Digimon. Both glanced down toward their stomachs while their mouths watered. John and Casimeir looked at Johan with sparkling eyes.
"We haven't had many chances to eat since breakfast on our trip back," Casimeir woefully explained.
John nodded to confirm this. "We were in such a hurry to come home. We only stopped to get a snack here and there." The human felt a tad embarrassed. "Yeah, yeah. I know. It's not healthy. But we would both love to take you up on your offer!"

Johan's diplomacy was well-executed and well-timed. Otherwise Tadayoshi might have been quite unwilling to back down from the argument, and even still he was obviously not thrilled to do so. He needed to cross his arms a moment and look away to compose himself. On the other hand, dinner did sound like quite the effective riff mender for the General's team and Johan's, who seemed to have gotten off on the wrong foot, as well as get to know their seniors. "Dinner sounds like a lovely idea," he agreed, putting on his best grateful smile as he did. "I hate to impose, but would you mind if the captain came, too?" Commandramon blinked slowly, silently acknowledging his agreement with the question. "He's just, y'know, attached, and you made it sound like you've got somewhere digimon-friendly to eat if you're offering to feed Cas here."
"Just the two of us, of course. The General would never trouble you to feed the whole team."
