Witness to the Sovereign [Toki/Plot]

What a rough couple of days.
After the incident in the Eastern Timberlands, a lot of things hit the ground running at once, both related and unrelated to the incident. There was outrage that something so heinous and devastating could happen without warning, a massive recovery effort to try and preserve the damaged forest, the discovery of plants long-since lost to time... and even something of a political coup in Luminas, to throw out the oppressive anti-virus regime out of power.
That just scratched the surface, and right now, Dr. Mikemon was completely caught up in the wake of it.
"Alright, thank you for your time, Mushroomon." Repeating that line for what felt like the hundredth time today, the cat rubbed his eyes, tossing the drafted file in line with the rest. His job right now was two-fold: get as many witness reports done as he could, and review the condition of those caught in the fight. Check for 'marks', see if anyone's bodies are hiding injuries from them...
If the cat wasn't running on only five hours of peaceful sleep, he might have taken this more in stride. Keep this moving.
He'd step out to the front of the makeshift office, peering his head out into the somewhat-crowded waiting room. Well, at least it looked a fair bit better than it did two hours ago!
"Next in line?"

Toki waited for him to be called up. Everything was still winding down after the disaster in the forest and the fear that some people were still being controlled by whatever caused all of this was very real. Despite that everyone seemed to be coming out of the office just fine. He winced and pressed a hand against his chest. He needed to have that injury looked at.
Soon, Mikemon would call for the next patient, which was him in the line. He stood up and entered the office when he guided him inside "Thank you for doing this. I can't imagine this has been easy for you with all the people who have been hurt during all of this." he said as he sat down on the nearby examination bed. "It's hard to believe something like this could just...happen out of the blue. So many people hurt and displaced. I'm glad I was able to help out at least a little. Wish I noticed how odd that Wizardmon was acting sooner." he said. "Anyway, enough about that...I've got something that needs to be checked on." he said. He shrugged off his jacket and removed his shirt, revealing a pretty bad wound across his torso. Due to his spirit's abilities it was already somewhat mended to, but it was going to leave behind a scar no doubt about it. "MetalPhantomon got me pretty good. But I couldn't just let it win. Same with Megidramon."
He sighed. Part of him wondered if it would be any different if he wasn't a spirit user. If he was a tamer instead. Would he feel better or worse? Someone else would be hurt instead of him if he was a tamer, so probably worse. "How is everyone else? I hope no one else has those marks on their body. I just want all of this to be behind us, though I can tell that this is going to linger in everyone's memories for quite some time."

"Honestly, considering the stuff the 'mons here had to go through, its the least I could do." Yes, the cat was stretched thin, but at this point he was slightly numb to it, getting his second wind as the shift moved on. Preparing a fresh chart, and putting on a new set of doctor's gloves, he gave a nod as Toki sat down.
"Hm... so you met the 'Wisemon' directly?" Mikemon's tone was neutral - on one hand, he might have an interesting lead or two, but on the other, the cat would have to get a data scan just to make sure that he was in his own right of mind. Before he could even tense his eyes, however, Toki presented a much more pressing issue:
The wound from the 'Soul Predator'. "Tsk..." Mikemon hissed slightly through his teeth. Stepping up next to the bed - already positioned low enough for Mikemon to use with a simple step-up - the cat would carefully run a finger across the bottom of the wound. "MetalPhantomon, you said? No wonder this still looks so bad - its cursed to keep the 'opponent' wounded as long as possible. Alright, hold still..."
Mikemon would extend his palms outward, a faint green light radiating from them. The wound would sting on contact, but the red mark and the purple 'veins' stretching thinly from it would start to recede. "As I understand it, the Wisemon died somewhere in the fight, but outstanding commands weren't cancelled just because he was deleted. Unfortunately, that's had doctors like me having to treat critical patients like potential 'criminals' - not a situation we want anyone to be in."
He put that aside for the moment, though. Clearly able to see Toki's hands, it was clear he wasn't trying to hide anything. "Hm... if you survived something like this, you're a spirit wielder? If you want, I can take a quick look at the totems, and make sure that they're 'hanging in there'. Just from this, well... at least one of them took a pretty heavy hit."

Toki winced slightly, but otherwise remained still as Mikemon did their work. The worst of the aches started to fade away as the 'cursed' part of the injury receded. "I figured it was something like that...thankfully I have the ability to heal myself, but it takes a while between uses." he explained and relaxed a bit now that he wasn't completely tense with the pain.
He nodded when asked about Wisemon "Yeah, I suppose that is who I was in contact with. I can't believe I let myself be fooled like that...but the fact that he's gone makes me feel a little bit better. I wonder who took him out." he said, mostly to himself. He frowned slightly at Mikemon's mention that the injured patients had to be treated like criminals "It's understandable to be cautious at a time like this, but I hate that we have to be. Even those who are being controlled aren't doing anything wrong willingly. But as long as we can catch them and get rid of those marks then I suppose all will be well. I just wish they didn't have to be so forceful about it. Everyone's been through enough."
When Mikemon asked to check on his totems, he pulled out his digivice and pulled up the holographic display "The one that took the hit from MetalPhantomon was my Beast Spirit, Lagosmon, but the scar seems to appear on my other forms since all of these totems are fragments of a single spirit. Apparently that's something a bit uncommon. That, and he's fully aware and can manifest as a kind of ghost. Otherwise he still needs me to take form. He's dormant right now. Probably exerted a lot of energy when we used our Mega form for combat for the first time."
Toki smiled sadly "If it weren't for him I don't know what kind of person I'd be today. I owe a lot to the spirit. I...still can't believe we managed to help stop something like Megidramon. I'm not sure if you know the full story, but before it died, it started spreading some kind of corruption through the forest. I tried to protect the totem and pleaded for the Sovereign to help and suddenly...it did. I have to say I'm...glad my voice was able to be heard by something like that."

"Hm? Just be careful - there's a difference between a doctor healing and a 'battle heal'. The latter's good for the bumps and scrapes, and definitely in a pinch, but you should seek out a doctor for the really bad stuff."
And it was clear with Mikemon's tone that this definitely qualified as 'bad'. The healing proceeded for several seconds before the doctor would pull back, briefly reaching into a cabinet to retrieve a small tube, red ointment spread over the glove. It was carefully pressed over that cursed wound, Mikemon quickly wrapping gauze around Toki's back, wrapping back around over the wound. "No heavy lifting for two days, and try to sleep on your back, alright?"
Thankfully, that seemed to be the main physical issue with Toki himself. The cat nodded as he moved back to change his gloves: "Trust me, I don't like it. But if you could just give me a look in the eyes here - and not mind me for a second." The cat's reason for saying that was clear a second after he said it: the moment their eyes would meet, Mikemon's eyes would tense, iris' shrinking, attention fully on Toki's frame. Perhaps the spirit wielder would have seen this before, seeing an irate Digimon seemingly 'glare' at another.
"... Good, you're not marked." Breaking eye contact, and rubbing his arm against his eyes, his ear flicked as Toki spoke it through. Interesting - so there was just one totem on display? Looking at the hologram, Mikemon considered it for a moment, before giving a sigh. "If he's dormant, I wouldn't want to stress it further. Linked as you are, the treatment I gave you should help the rest of them. At least somewhat, anyway."
But seriously, Megidramon? The cat's ear flickered in interest at that part of the 'story', pausing at the realization of what he had just heard.
Of what Toki had just so casually said.
"... Alright, I think I want to get to the second part of this..." The cat gave a small smile, pulling the chart into his hands. "Right, that 'second part': honestly, no-one really got a full picture of everything that was going on, so we're trying to get witness statements - and with what you said, I honestly just want to hear your story. Not just the Sovereign, but what happened, what did you see?"

Toki blushed a little, ashamed at being scolded over the injury. At least he felt like it was scolding. "I understand. I've never been really good at taking care of myself, even when I probably should." he lifted his arms when Mikemon applied the gauze. "Thanks." he said with a warm smile, thankful people like Mikemon were here to help out.
He nodded at his instructions "Yeah, I'll take it easy for the next few days. I need the break." he said with a chuckle. He continued to follow Mikemon's instructions and kept eye contact with him as he did...something. But it was apparently a way to make sure he wasn't marked in any way, so that was good. "I'm sure you'll have the chance to meet my spirit one day. He doesn't let much keep him down for long."
Mikemon wanted Toki to reflect on what happened at the forest "Oh, where do I start? When I went back into the forest after escorting the Digimon to safety, I digivolved to Mega and fought alongside a few others to bring a stop to Megidramon. A Rasielmon named Mae, a Fladramon, and two other Digimon with their tamer who fused into some kind of...angel named Solarimon. It was all happening so fast so it was hard to keep it all in my mind..."
He leaned back slightly "The fight was brutal. Everyone took some pretty nasty hits, myself included. In the end we overpowered Megidramon and defeated it, but in its desperate attempt to have the last laugh started to burn or corrupt the forest soil. That was when Solarimon..." he paused for a moment as he took a deep breath to compose himself "That's when Solarimon grabbed it and tore it from the ground. She flew higher and higher above the treeline and then...there was an explosion. Both of them were gone..." he said sadly.
"But...there was still the matter of the corruption. I didn't know what to do. So...I spoke to the Sovereign. I asked it to help us. To save this forest that has been a home and a safe haven for so many innocent digimon and even some humans. I even offered up my data to it...anything to prevent anyone in the forest from getting hurt more. I just wanted the suffering to end. Then...I reverted to Lagosmon and protected the totem with my life. I blocked the corruption with a wall of earth for as long as I can. I thought it was all over, but then a light shined behind me. Water flowed past my ankles and the forest came to life again, overwhelming Megidramon's ability. Flowers bloomed, died, and regrew in that soil, the water flowed into the cracks in the earth...and when I turned around, I saw it. Ebonwumon. It roared as the forest healed itself and it...acknowledged me. I saw it nod at me when we made eye contact. Then...I returned to human form and proceeded to comfort those who were hurt in the conflict."

"Don't worry about it." After so many years, Mikemon could tell that particular tone when someone was a bit nervous talking to a doctor. The cat gave a chuckle: "Trust me, you're not the first one I've talked to about this. Very few people from the human world even think about it until its brought up to 'em."
So long as Toki followed his advice, Mikemon had no reason to complain. And even that thought was pushed aside for the moment, the cat's pen scratching against the clipboard as Toki started to give his record. He was part of the escort group that was reported to on the outskirts ("Ah, with the Lillymon and the Sunflowmon?"), and dove back into the woods to the center of it all, to encounter a terrifying Megidramon.
That alone would have made an interesting story. Mae (who Mikemon knew from the Library), a Fladramon, and a form called a 'Solarimon' managed to fend off the beast, but not without significant loss. The cat's pen stopped for a moment, a tight grip almost threatening to bend it in half - but he maintained his composure. The next part, that's where the new information was.
About how he pleaded to the Sovereign, protected the totem... and about how the Sovereign answered him.
Compared to the Azulongmon in the desert...
The cat was silent for a few moments, catching up with his notes. And after a few long minutes of thought, he filled a gap: "That Megidramon's technique is called 'Final Hazard'. It involves seeding the ground underneath with a powerful amount of energy, essentially replacing the surface underneath with a volatile, volcanic plate, which makes the ground sink in around itself. Coupled with its radiation, and its a terrifyingly powerful attack... hm."
"... As I understand it - or, rather, with what little I know about it, the Sovereign tend to not move unless the land itself is at risk. It doesn't care about war or even the changes of the world around it. Maybe the effort was to preserve itself, or maybe Ebonwumon simply has a kinder heart."
A kinder heart. Hearing that Toki even stuck around to try and help out the others hurt in the conflict, the cat gave a smile. "I'm surprised you had that much left in you, especially after going so far in that fight. I guess in times like that, one just ignores how hurt they are." Still, to meet a Sovereign - he was still trying to wrap his head around that! "After the incident, a few surveyors did manage to find new plants growing in the area - 'Ebonwumon's Grace', I think. Well, this might be a trickier question, but did you get any idea of what the Ebonwumon was feeling or thinking, at the time? Even a guess is fine."

He chuckled a bit when Mikemon told him not to worry about it. "There's a call to adventure in a place like this, what can I say?" he said to try and lighten the mood a bit. "While we may not have Digimon longevity, we can more than make up for it with our tenacity. We're a fleeting people, but that's nothing to lament. We have our ways of making the most out of every single moment we're given. I'm sure Digimon do as well." he said, smiling.
The overall description that Mikemon gave to 'Final Hazard' terrified Toki. The fact that something like that could just utterly devastate a landscape with reckless abandon did not sit well with Toki "Such rampant destruction...I wonder if it had any goals other than destruction in its life. What did it want? Why? What made them that way? It's tragic...in a sense. I'm glad Ebonwumon stopped the spread of the hazard."
He thought about the Sovereigns as Mikemon spoke of them "Well...I can't pretend to know exactly what something like them are thinking, but they seem to exert so much power just by existing. Maybe they understand that using so much energy can cause more harm than good, or it's very difficult for them to stay manifested for long periods of time. Again, I know little about them...but I don't think they're as apathetic as to just ignore the plights of those around them..." he said. He seemed to believe what he was saying. Naivete or true hope? Was there a difference? Toki didn't care.
"As for what Ebonwumon...it could just be a side effect of what it did, but the fact it left behind new plant life and such beauty suggests to me that it truly cared about us and the world around it. It gave us new life as precious gifts. I saw something in Ebonwumon's eyes when it looked at me like...it was appreciative of my efforts. I could have given up...I could have run away, but...I couldn't. Too many people were on the line. Homes and lives were threatened. Even if it was out of desperation I did everything I could for those around me, even when it would have been safer to run."
He smiled "That's just who I am. The world has enough suffering. Why add to it? I want to bring peace. I want to make others happy. To be their friend and help bring understanding to all. It's a lofty dream, I know...but every little step takes me in the right direction."

"Trust me, y'all are a lot less 'fleeting' than you give yourselves credit for." He'd seen patients hold out for a lot longer than he thought they could have have, even at his own table. When they only had one life to hold onto, well...
... Right, the Megidramon. The cat's ear twitched, Mikemon sighing as he shook his head. "Honestly, I'm certain the Megidramon was a respectable Digimon with his own dreams, ideals, and probably even 'colleagues' or something of the sort. I've followed up with a lot of what happened in the forest - and in fact, there was a second Digimon there at the same level of the Megidramon, a Chaosdramon. If it wasn't for a Super Mega on our own side and a supporting archer stopping its advance, he likely would have aided the Megidramon at the center." And for how tight it was holding out against one of those titans, it was easy to imagine how it would have turned out if there were two.
But that was hardly the point: "But the Chaosdramon was the same as any other threat in the woods: marked and controlled by that ffff.... freaking Wisemon." He only halted himself in the audience of a patient, but it was clear what he wanted to say! "It was probably the same for the Megidramon." And yes, it was easy to think that there might have been some way to save him...
But was there?
The Sovereign was entirely a different matter. Toki did present a handful of theories, that the Sovereign weren't necessarily 'apathetic'. Mikemon wasn't exactly certain of it - it didn't exactly sound like the Sovereign acted of its own accord. He was about to say something in that line, before it clicked.
"... Shoot, it's really that simple, isn't it?" Mikemon shook his head, with a chuckle. "The Sovereign didn't act on its own, but it did act when it was asked. Sure, the Sovereign might want the world to proceed without its influence, but they're still listening to our prayers."
And Toki's was one that struck right at the heart! Seeing the situation in a bit of a different light, Mikemon tapped a claw against the desk, mulling through his thoughts. "Still, I'd like to ask a few questions about the 'tangible' part of it here. Did you get a good feel for the Sovereign's data signal?"

Hearing that humans weren't as fleeting as Toki thought actually brought a little bit of peace to his mind. "You must have met a lot of humans, huh? Well, thank you for doing what you can to take care of them when they're injured. We need more like you." he said.
Though he was a little depressed to hear this about Megidramon and even Chaosdramon "I don't quite understand why some people force others to do awful things for them. Wisemon's complete disregard for free will and the lives of others sickens me. I don't care what their plan was, but it wasn't worth all of this. Not all the pain and loss that came with this rampage. This couldn't have been a spur of the moment thing...this was probably planned and built up for a long, long time..." he said with a sigh.
"I wish I could have met some of these Digimon before everything went wrong. Maybe if someone met them before...things could have been different and we wouldn't have had to fight like this." he shifted around in his seat a bit "But there's no use dwelling on that now. What's done is done. All we can do is take care of who's left, right?"
Toki smiled and nodded at Mikemon's assessment on the Sovereigns "They're watching over us. They want us to succeed as much as we can by ourselves. I think they just don't want us to become dependent on them, which I understand. But they understand that not everything is within our power and help us when we definitely need it."
He thought about what the Sovereign's data signal was like "It's hard to determine. It was overwhelming in power that's for sure, but I didn't feel like I was in danger. I actually felt safe...guarded in its presence. My spirit almost resonated with it in an odd way but I'm not entirely sure what that means...all I know is that Ebonwumon was there for us and its power was for the benefit of the forest and all of those living there."

All they could really do was take care of what was left. That was true, yes, but Mikemon's tried sigh suggested there was a bit more to it. "Well, yes, but I suspect there will be finger-pointing and suspicion of this whole event for a long while to come. 'Why did it happen in the first place', 'Why were people not watching closer', that sort of thing. And honestly, not all of it is going to be unwarranted."
Still, though the consequences were expected, it wasn't exactly the most calming state for the Digital World to be in. At the very least, the Sovereign were watching over them, right?
Hearing Toki's testimony regarding the data signal itself, the doctor's ear flicked at the description. There was something there that caught his attention: 'overwhelming'? 'Resonated'? The cat's pen tapped against the paper, trying to piece through that.
"Odd... typically, Sovereign data is one that's 'beyond' the ability for most Digimon to sense. Whatever power they use is a grade above what normal 'data' can provide. But if you were able to sense it, then... hm."
Mikemon's curiosity was piqued, his tail flicking in a curious sense. "If you don't mind, could I get a scan of your data as it is? Your spirit as well." As he spoke, the cat reached his arm out, seemingly plucking a red crystal ball out of 'nothing'. "This let's me look a few more layers deep than my eyes alone would allow. Up to you, of course."

Toki thought about this for a moment, clearly troubled by the situation "I suppose you're right. This sort of thing doesn't just...happen for no reason at all. I don't really know what things are like for Digimon when it comes to politics or what not, but maybe there's something in place that just pushed some Digimon to the breaking point. Something that should change so nothing like this happens again. At least not for the same reasons." he tilted his head a bit "Again, I'm not really sure what that could be. Though I've definitely noticed an animosity towards Virus types, and a majority of the attackers were Virus types." the thought of this saddened him somewhat "Damn it...this is just going to make things worse for them. Everyone's going to assume they're a danger, but that's not the right way to go about it! You can't just treat every single one like criminals for the actions of a few...they're individuals like everyone else and deserve a chance."
He realized how worked up he was getting about this and looked away "Sorry...I shouldn't be getting this worked up about this. Maybe I don't even know what I'm talking about. I just can't stand people being judged for another's actions."
Thankfully it seemed that Mikemon had just the thing to change the subject from this harsh political talk. Admittedly what Mikemon said got him curious. It wasn't normal to be able to sense a Sovereign's data signal? "Well I mean, a lot of things were happening at once. I might be remembering some things wrong..." he said as he rubbed the back of his head nervously.
Then Mikemon asked to scan his data and the data of his spirit. "Oh, yeah, go for it." he offered up his Digivice again and brought up the display for the spirits once more. "If this will answer some of the questions you have, then I'll gladly let you do this. I don't have much to lose." he said, his smile returning.

"I don't think the type of the controlled Digimon is a coincidence. Despicable as he was, Wisemon was still a vastly intelligent and conniving Digimon. It wouldn't surprise me if he was thinking several steps ahead of this incident at the forest."
That, alone, was a sobering thought. Hearing Toki's concern for the virus types, Mikemon gave a smile, shaking his head as Toki apologized. "You're too kind, Toki. For now, though, this is something that we're going to have to figure out ourselves." Besides, it wasn't Toki's responsibility to try and change the mind of the entire Digital World.
Even a Sovereign wasn't that capable.
Speaking of, as Toki consented to the scan, the cat gave a nod, setting the crystal sphere on top of a small stand. He took a few moments to focus, peering through the crystal to see Toki on the other end, his eyes once more contorting in focus. He first peered through Toki's data, a spirit wielder:
His fractal code is consistent with his type, already drawn into a ring-seed to better align with the spirits. Apart from that... standard data affinity. 80 Da, 15 Va, 5 Vi... nothing out of the ordinary. It was good news, of course, but it was more or less what Mikemon expected to begin with.
The spirit itself, however, was more interesting. Unlike most, it was just a single totem, which was already adding another layer of complication: Let's see... Seraphim type. It originally ceased function as a Digimon sometime circa 900 or so cycles ago, but I can't determine its age before that. Its some sort of 'Cherubimon' type, but not one that exists currently, and...
The cat blinked, 'seeing' something rather than sensing it. Around the totem's 'full potential' was a single band of data, near gold in 'color'. Admittedly, the wide and surprised look in Mikemon's eyes probably was more concerning than anything else without a description - something the cat caught a few seconds later!
"Oh, sorry..." He shook his head, rubbing his eyes to try and right his eyesight. "The, um, spirit is fine. Injured, of course, but not in an irrecoverable state." That alone wouldn't have been worth the Mikemon's reaction, of course.
"But if I'm looking at it right... I think the Ebonwumon gave your spirit a 'gift', of sorts."

Toki relaxed as Mikemon prepared to scan him "Even if it's something I shouldn't concern myself with, I'll still be available to help however I can. This world is just as much my home as the Human World. It's just not in my nature to leave those in need if there's a way I can help. Remember that, okay Mikemon? If there's anything you need, you're more than welcome to reach out to me."
He laughed a little as he remembered some of the people he had met "I've met great people here, Mikemon. All of them with dreams and goals. K, Aylin, Holly, Archon, Owen, Bezil, Kan...I want to be there for them, just as they've been there for me. Friendship, as cliche as it sounds, is a powerful thing and something we should all hold on to."
He remained still as Mikemon scanned his data as well as his spirit's. This didn't seem to bother him at all. It seemed to be no different from getting a X-ray. As this went on he worried that he might be getting himself in over his head. Then he remembered that he was never alone here. His spirit and all of the great friends he made in the Digital World shaped him to be who he was today. He was eternally grateful to the opportunity he was given.
As Mikemon looked through the data, he seemed shocked or surprised by something, though Toki stayed quiet until he was done. Once Mikemon put the crystal down, he listened to what he had to say "I'm glad my spirit's going to be fine...but Ebonwumon gave him a gift?" he looked over ZenCherubimon's data once more. "Now that you mention it there is something a bit different about him. Do you know what it might be, exactly?" he asked, honored and excited to know what this could possibly be.

"Heh, I'll keep that in mind. Heck, if you need a doctor to check out something, you can give me a ring. We'll exchange numbers after this."
Might as well stick together, right? As Mikemon set up the stand, his ear flicked as Toki decided to give a few names of great people he'd met in the Digital World. Of course, a fair number of these were ones he didn't recognize (like Owen) or only knew in passing (like Kan). But as he went through the list, the cat blinked, and couldn't help but stifle a chuckle.
"S-sorry. It's just a small world. Um... K's my wife, and by extension, Holly's my daughter." He wasn't expecting it to come up in conversation, but at the very least it was a funny coincidence! "I'm glad, though. You still keep in touch with 'em?"
Casual banter aside, the scan went more-or-less as planned, the cat idly spinning the crystal ball in his hand as Toki responded. Granted, Mikemon didn't know exactly what was going on: "Well, it's as I said before. Sovereign data doesn't exactly 'read' the same as Digimon data. I was able to observe an additional 'fractal ring', basically a single band of data - that stuff that wraps around you when you evolve." He tried to put it in layman's terms.
"I can't be certain, but based on its location and angle, its not something that would interfere with normal function. It 'behaves' like a normal bit of loaded data. It's possible that Ebonwumon gifted you a technique or trait or something of the sort. That would be my best guess - it's certainly more than just a marker."
