"Uh-oh," Unica uttered under her breath.
The desperation in Unica's voice was enough to send up red flags in Birdie's mind. She flapped her wings a few times as she turned around and hovered in place. "What do you mean 'uh-oh'?" She watched as her tamer knelt down and frantically checked the pockets of the backpack for something. After a few seconds of silence, Bbirdie lowered herself to the ground and walked over to her human companion, cocking her head to one side as she watched Unica's hands search through the contents within her bag. "What'd you lose?"
"Oh no," was Unica's only response as she instantly began to tear up.
Birdie let out a low, sharp sigh which sounded more like a growl than a simple exhale of air. "Stop crying and answer the question," she demanded, her attention shifting from the backpack to the distraught girl.
"You're gonna be mad," Unica sniffled, letting her arms go limp on top of her bag as she looked up at the always-scowling Biyomon in front of her. The tears that welled up in her eyes threatened to fall, and the tip of her nose grew red as she tried to compose herself.
Birdie's wings ruffled as she watched her tamer begin to break down. "No, I won't," she spat, her beak snapping together as she took a step closer. "Just tell me. What'd you lose?" She was already starting to grow irritated with trying to pry information out of the young human. She'd beat the information out if she had to, but she wasn't about to say so aloud.
Realizing Birdie's short temperament, Unica decided to spit it out. "The phone!" Unica sobbed, the tears now streaking down her cheeks as the fear of her partner's repercussions started to take hold.
"The phone..?" Birdie was stumped for a few seconds before her eyes widened at the realization of what her young tamer was trying to say. "You lost the digivice!?" Unica nodded slowly in response, her wails only growing in volume at the aggression in Birdie's voice and the manic look in her eyes. Birdie lifted her wings and prepared to use her Chirping Attack, unable to control the pure rage she felt inside. "You idiot! I knew you couldn't be trusted with something so valuable!" Just as she was about to unleash her barrage of claw swipes, Birdie turned around and screamed something unintelligible. This outburst only caused Unica to cry even more intensely. It was quite a sight to behold, especially in the middle of Terminus City.

Terminus, how nice. Tetsu stretched his limbs. He know that he's being melodramatic when it's just a bit of a sit from Real World to Digital World, but whatever. His body is made to move. The eleven years old waited as his partner came out from the train, with no haste as usual.
"Mmm, I think I'm getting old."
"What are you saying?" Tetsu chuckled. "Gryz you're younger than me!"
"Heh, I'm just pulling your leg, brother. Either way, what are you going to do today?"
"Well, let's see... the plan is to either train again or maybe check the shelter status... But I don't think I'll do that just yet, yanno? And training probably get a bit too... you know..." Tetsu flexed a bicep. The abnormal size of that on a kid, yeah that's not a good sign. It's all natural though. Thanks to the time dilation in Digital World's part, Tetsu's already amazing strength turned almost on strongest child level.
"Hmmm, is your friend remarking something about that again?"
"Yeah, she said that if I train more than this my parents gonna think that I'm having a genetic anomaly... and that's gonna be ugly... Hmmm... say, what about just relaxing today? Just let the flow of life bring u---"
Before Tetsu could say anything more, he suddenly dashed toward the crowds. "Huh?! Hey Tetsu!?" Gryz immediately chased after him. He couldn't quite make what's wrong until he saw a crying girl and Tetsu gently crouched in front of her, looking up.
"What's wrong? Is there is anything that Oniichan can help?" he asked to the younger girl. What Tetsu missed is however the girl's partner that just screaming loudly. Gryz's head already turning at full speed, trying to assess how exactly is relationship between the young girl and the... Piyomon that just screamed unintelligibly. Partners? If they're partners then boy, this is gonna be ugly... something else? He doesn't care.
"Tetsu, what's up?"
"No idea just yet. I'm asking."

Birdie continued to scream and complain about how worthless her partner was, going so far as to threaten abandoning the young girl again. However, her outbursts were mostly a result of her bubbling rage as opposed to something she was genuinely considering. With her back still turned to her tamer, unable to look the girl in the face, a boy ran up on the scene. Birdie's distant ramblings prevented her from hearing the stranger's words as he asked what was going on and whether or not he could help.
Unica, on the other hand, was growing hysterical the more she listened to her partner's threats. It was her fault for losing the digivice. She knew it. She also knew how important and irreplaceable the device was. It was her job to hold onto it and make sure it was safe, but she failed. She was a failure. So maybe Birdie had a point, maybe she really was an idiot. As a result of these negative thoughts creeping into her mind, when the boy asked if Unica was alright, she simply wailed, "I'm an idiot! The phone, the phone! It's gone! I'm sorry!" To anyone not privy to the duo's prior conversation, Unica's sobs wouldn't have made much sense.
Fortunately, Birdie was there to translate. Unfortunately, she was in no mood to do so. Not only was she infuriated at the prospect of losing the digivice, but her anger flared up when she turned around and noticed the second human standing near Unica, followed closely by his very own Digimon partner. "Hey! Back off!" Birdie exclaimed, her feathers ruffling again as she spread her wings to either side in a threatening manner. On the inside of her wings were two purple markings, one on each wing, in the shape of glaring eyes. It was enough to frighten lower leveled Digimon -- and, as a result, she doubted it'd work on these two strangers -- but it was still worth a shot. "We don't need your help, we'll find it on our own. Back off!"

"Ssh, shh... it's OK, It'll be OK..." Tetsu tried to calm down the wailing girl. Honestly, the abuse was a bit too much for his ears. He can't believe that someone this young is partnered to someone this foul mouthed. Back off? How about this bird fuck off? And it's at that time that Gryz put on his fighting stance against the Piyomon. Markings? She's not alone. The Bearmon even looked more wicked than a normal Bearmon with red marks. The claws also colored blue with red tints at the end. "...I suggest you stop your abuse right now. Even if this kid is your partner, you have no rights to mouth off like that, especially to someone so young." Gryz's usually calm face looked at Birdie with dangerous look of reprimand. One among his press the danger button is definitely child being treated like this. The papa bear mode is not to be trifled with. "...Phone...?" Tetsu parroted at the girl. "Digivice," Gryz surmised. "It must be the Digivice." "Ooh.. hmmm... in that case that would be hard, yeah..." Tetsu whipped out his D-Nexus. The Digivice showed map of Terminus, and there are way too many signal of people moving. It's not gonna work. Finding it will be hard... but... he know one form that can help. "Lookie here.. um... what's your name? Oniichan and Mr. Gryz here will help you look for your phone, alright? There's no need for more crying, OK? We'll find it, I promise. For now, you should calm down, OK? It's going to be alright!" ...Tetsu's finger slids through the evolution data and settled at Baihumon. Should the girl calm down, next he just need to evolve Gryz to Baihumon... Hopefully.

When the Bearmon turned around to face the chaotic Biyomon, bared his red-and-blue claws, and scolded her for the way she was behaving, Birdie squared off, prepared to attack if either of the strangers decided to make a move on Unica. She was feeling protective enough over her tamer to risk starting a fight. It wasn't a protectiveness caused by a partner's bond, it was purely because Unica was a means to an end. She could take being reprimanded for her attitude, it wasn't the first time she made enemies because of her aggressive and assertive personality, but what really sent her over the edge was how these two strangers got involved in her and Unica's affairs without even being asked -- not that Birdie would've asked for outside help anyway.
The two strangers struggled for a moment to ascertain what Unica meant by "phone," and the Bearmon eventually deducted that she was trying to say "digivice." He was correct, but the still-salty Birdie made sure to insult him in an attempt to remind him that she was still there, defenses up. "No shit she's talking about our digivice. You two are real geniuses." Her words either fell on deaf ears or didn't illicit enough of a response to warrant a follow-up comment. Instead, they seemed more focused on helping Unica find where her D-3 device might be.
The human boy whipped out his own digivice and brought up a map on the screen. Resigned to the fact that finding the digivice by scouring the entire city would be a daunting task, the boy asked Unica for her name. Try as they might, the strangers were unable to get the young girl to calm down enough to give up any vital information. She simply kept muttering "I'm sorry" and "I'm an idiot." A slight smirk crossed over Birdie's face as she lowered her wings, giving up her hostile demeanor in exchange for a smug, self-assured one. "See what I have to deal with? You'd lose your mind too," she sneered, as though Unica's hysterics justified her behavior.
Just as all hope seemed to be lost, Unica finally began to speak, as if in response to Birdie's quip. Although she continued to choke on her sobs and her body shook slightly in uncontrollable bursts, she was able to catch her breath enough to get out her name, "U-Unica." She extended her left arm and pointed weakly at the bird Digimon standing a few feet away. "Tha-that's Birdie. She's my p-partner." With a sniffle and a hiccup, Unica let out a low moan, trying her best to compose herself in order to prove Birdie wrong. She wouldn't be a cry baby. She needed to get a grip of herself to make Birdie proud of her, to make Birdie happy again. Being happy would make everyone else happy. She told herself that she needed to grow up and take responsibility.

"Only because you have no patience, child." Gryz countered, his tone very sharp. "You could have spared this girl from more of her wailing if you could have told her, assured her that it was alright, and then you could have asked for help. But I guess that's what you are, eh?" this time the Bearmon was the one to smirk smugly "...A kid who blamed every single mistake on anything but yourself? Grow up, chickadee. Oh wait, you can't! Because without the digivice you can't really evolve and grow up can you?"
"Gryz, that's enough. We're not here to pick a fight. Alright, Unica, Sorry about what my partner said just then... He can be really sharp when he's angry... Um, but, we're really here to help, so don't worry, alright?" Tetsu took a handkerchief from his pocket and gently wipes the younger girl's tears and snot. "Alright... Gryz, how wide is Seasarmon's field?"
"About 25 meters. It's the least concise though."
"You mean when you're Baihumon it's more likely for you to find missing digivice?"
"As long as nobody picked it up, yes. I can't sense their colors, though."
"That should be enough... Well... anyway, Gryz, evolve!"
With a press of a button, the form of the Gryzmon magnified several times bigger to figure of white tiger, except this one does not have multiple digicores on his body. Gryz took a step. There's an echo following that, almost like something spread to the fifty meter radius around him.
Every single Digimon, every single human, every single object, and whatever he can feel, it immediately registered to him. This is the ability of the Western Tiger.
"........None yet. Tetsu, get on."
"Unica, let's get on Gryz, shall we? Can you tell me where you last walked? We'll trace it back, alright? All of it, so don't worry!"

The Bearmon's words didn't sting as much as they probably should've. Birdie didn't need a scolding from a 'mon who couldn't even keep a leash on his own human. Her smirk only began to waver when the stranger let a smug grin creep across his own face. The words that followed, the ones that pegged down her behavior and her sensitivity about not being able to evolve, were what really cut her down. They hit too close to home. He was right about everything, but the comment about the lost Digivice caused unexpected consequences. Unica, who was overhearing the whole argument and saw how enraged Birdie got at the reminder that their device was missing, tore her eyes from both Digimon and let out another quiet whimper, silently blaming herself for everything that was happening.
Just as the boy was finished scolding his Digimon and retrieving the handkerchief from his pocket to tend to Unica, Birdie lunged forward, motivated by pure spite. The whiz of wind passed by Birdie's head and drowned out Unica's cries to stop as she flapped her wings and lifted off the ground. While rushing toward the protective Bearmon, Birdie's beak began glowing with digital energy and extending a few inches, coming to a point at the end. Normally, Birdie had enough self control to not run head-first into combat with a Digimon who she didn't know the potential of, but the bear's probing taunts were too much for her to sit by and take. Her beak, claws, and talons would hurt more than words, so that's what she decided to use in order to teach him a lesson. She'd teach him to think twice before talking down to her again.
Birdie's strategy consisted of a barrage of melee, close-ranged attacks followed by a swift retreat where she would dodge her enemy's counter before coming in close for another series of attacks. Because of the speed with which she moved and the game of cat-and-mouse which she tended to play in combat, her attacks were fairly weak in the grand scheme of things. She rarely stopped long enough to charge up a heavy-hitting blow. Instead, she planned to wear her rivals down, and Bearmon was no exception to her average battle strategy. To kick things off, she wanted to piece the bear Digimon with her Hard Beak and glide a few feet away to avoid whatever he had in store for her.

Pure spite? Way too used to this. Gryz just coldly narrowed his eyes. He know that if this bird is harmed, then all that will blame herself is the girl... but honestly, he had enough. Enough of this child. Gryz's paw glows with brown light, and he was ready. He just need to tank this move and he'll hit back... not in a way that she would expect for sure... but before he could do that, suddenly a bright flash of light tossed right in front of where Birdie is heading at. It's an energy sphere... one that will deal no damage because it's, after all... is toy.
It's Tetsu shooting Hadouken-like projectile at Birdie that exploded upon impact when it hits.
Gryz was surprised, but what even more surprising was the fastness of the boy that is his partner. Tetsu's arm shot at the bird's wing to change the trajectory of her flight. His muscles aren't for show. That is four years worth of training Bajiquan in Digital World, sparring weekly with child digimon prepared him for this sort of scenario. The moment he know she's close enough, he would punch her on the cheek strongly with fury of an angered human.
Hit or not hit the boy snarled "WOULD YOU CUT THAT OUT!?"
It definitely would caught attention of some people. If all of these action are successful, Tetsu would pin Birdie under his full weight in a lock.
"...Lookie here... I'm not helping you. You don't need my help, nor I'm going to give it to you, but this girl definitely do need my help and that I'll give her, even without her asking. But you just have to push that button and attacked my partner, don't you?
Clearly if someone have even tiniest amount of spite to discipline you they'll just leave you unable to evolve for years to come. But that would just make you blame this girl all the more. You're so damn lucky... DAMN LUCKY I SAY to have someone who are this sweet for partner. If you pull this shit to anyone else... whoa boy, they probably going to just let you rot, leave you on the sides, and just return to real world. Yep, what a pleasant shit that would be, right?
I would have do the same honestly, just leave you and let you be... but no. If I leave then without doubt you'll go at it again and would verbally abuse this girl. SO QUIT IT AND GROW UP, FEATHERBRAIN! You're forced to a situation against your desire... and the first thing you do is to LEASH OUT on someone who can tolerate YOUR BULLSHIT? What a real mature way to go at it! Sounds like someone NEED TO WAKE UP FROM THEIR DREAM!
Shut this as much as you want, but I'll keep this pounded on your brain anyway. You risked a fight in Terminus, in places where people can see... you verbally abused your partner, and now you attacked another Digimon, that's an arrestable offense in Terminus. But thanks to me punching and pinning you down, that won't happen... because it's a justified self defense. Now how long has we been sitting here? Time that can be used to find that Digivice? A damn lot. Now listen, birdbrain. You could have saved us from all that trouble had you stop being such a prick of a Digimon with a complex. If you at least learn your position, acknowledged it, and do something about it rather than attacking Gryz... we could've already traced the Digivice, and probably found it. I don't even mean for you to kowtow. Just stay put would have been great already.
...Now who wasted our time? Not Unica, bless her heart. You did. You lost the sight of what's important to begin with: that Digivice. All because you can't take a counter insult for what you said yourself"
After that Tetsu would release the lock and just dusted himself. He obviously expected an angry Unica, or crying girl... but even so... this is needed. Will he regret it? He might, but he had enough.

Post by Unica & Birdie on Apr 22, 2019 17:08:31 GMT
When Bearmon's paws began to glow, a subtle smirk crept across Birdie's face, a clear indication that she was enjoying the prospect of him fighting back. Even though she wanted to put him in his place and give him a proper beating, she had to admit that the back-and-forth of a fight was great fun too. There was no reason why she couldn't enjoy herself while crushing him to a pulp. It was a cocky mindset and just such attitudes were bound to lead to misfortune, but Birdie wasn't concerned about that right now. She was closing the space between them, her beak pulsing with a radiate energy as she neared. She beat her wings to gain speed. She zipped through the air. Inches away now. So close.
However, something stopped her short. A projectile struck her and flashed with a brilliant light, instantly reminding her of the arrow Dinohumon had used against her in the Spartan Training Grounds to prevent her from fleeing. It didn't hurt as she had expected it to, but it was enough to catch her off guard and cause her to list to one side to avoid whatever was thrown it at her. However, as she tried to turn back toward Bearmon in order to correct her flight path, she realized she couldn't. She was still falling to the ground. Her tunnel vision widened just enough for her to spot the human boy, one hand having a firm grasp on her wing as he tackled her to the ground. That was fine. He'd soon learn not to interfere in a battle between Digimon. The moment she locked eyes with the boy and her beak began to glow again, his fist collided with her cheek.
Well, that was a surprise. His strike actually hurt. He couldn't actually be a human, could he? Humans weren't that strong, especially not when they were so young. He had to be a Digimon wearing a Holosuit, she told herself; and yet, she knew it wasn't true. The blow stunned Birdie long enough for her to finish falling to the ground without being able to get in a counterattack. The collision against the pavement knocked the wind out of her, but the silence only lasted a few seconds. As soon as she got her bearings, Birdie screeched and cawed incoherent phrases at her attacker, and she raked her talons against the boy's chest as he spoke, his words falling on deaf ears. All the while, she flapped her wings in desperation, almost looking like a fish out of water or a flipped turtle in her feeble attempts to free herself.
Try as she might, Birdie was incapable of releasing the boy's grasp on her. She wouldn't be freed anytime soon and she was losing steam quickly. Her screams grew more infrequent and her flails became weaker the longer she was grappled. Pink and purple feathers fluttered around them as she continued to struggle, though it didn't seem to matter. When the human boy rose his voice to emphasis the point that Birdie was lucky for having such a sweet partner, she finally stopped fighting back. Her crimson talons -- damp with freshly drawn blood -- lingered on the boys stomach, not puncturing the skin but instead resting against his flesh.
As the boy continued to speak, ranting on and on about how abusive Birdie was and how kind Unica was, Birdie lolled her head to the side and glanced at her partner who was still crouched near her backpack, sobbing loudly. The back of her hands were pressed up against her eyes as she tried to stop the tears from flowing. The sight infuriated Birdie and she had to bite back the desire to scream at the girl to knock it off, but there was something else. It was a repressed feeling deep inside her chest that resembled the warm sensation she had experienced the first time she met Unica, when the girl called her pretty. It was a tenderness for Unica that was both pleasant and uncomfortable.
She did want to protect and help the girl, but she chocked it up to her relationship with the Digivice rather than how she felt about Unica. After all, how could she genuinely care for her partner when, most of the time, she wanted to scream at her? The confusion and conflicting emotions frustrated Birdie. That, paired with the boy's consistent ramblings and reminder that fighting in the streets of Terminus City was illegal, caused Birdie's soften features to harden again as she looked back at the human boy atop her. She was silent as she listened to him talk about how they were wasting time with infighting, but she kept her feet in place, her talons pressed against his torn shirt and prepared to strike if he decided to try punching her again.
When the boy finally asked his rhetorical question -- "Now who wasted our time?" -- Birdie muttered the snide remark, "You are, boy." Her quip was quiet and was instantly drowned out by the human's follow-up comments about how the only person to blame here was Birdie. While she didn't agree entirely, he did have a good point: the important thing here was that they needed to find the Digivice, a statement which Birdie found ironic. She let her dissatisfaction show with a scoff and few choice words about the boy's stupidity. To her, he had ended his long rant by agreeing with Birdie's original position, that the Digivice was the most crucial thing in this situation and Unica's emotional fragility wasn't something that needed been addressed. Digivice first then Unica's tantrums. Why then were these two getting on her case about taking care of Unica?
Though Birdie was both confused and infuriated with the boy and his Bearmon partner, she kept her mouth shut. When she was released from the grapple hold, she hurriedly hopped back on her feet, not wanting to be taken advantage of by a follow-up attack when she was prone on the ground. Once standing, she ruffled her feathers, loosing dirt and stray pebbles from her body as she did. While Unica continued to sob, Birdie acted as though she was not bothered or responsible. Instead, she lifted the wing that the boy had grabbed moments prior and began to drag her beak across some of the crooked feathers in order to straighten and clean them. As she did, her blue eyes flickered to the three individuals in front of her, staying on high alert at all times and visibly ready to fight or flee at any given moment.
Unica, on the other hand, had witnessed the whole thing. She saw Birdie lose her temper which, while frightening in and of itself, was something she was fairly used to. She knew better than to tell her partner to settle down, since the last time she did, Birdie ran away and it was a long time until they saw each other again. Although those weeks were the most stress-free Unica had experienced since coming to the digital world, the idea of being abandoned again left her somewhat traumatize and reluctant to speak up against her partner's actions, however disagreeable they were. It was Oniichan's aggressiveness toward Birdie that really caused her to erupt into tears again. Should she tell him to stop? Beg them to stop fighting? What if he left her too, just when he had promised to help rectify the problem she had caused?
Needless to say, it was a lot of stress for a child to handle by herself. Even if someone asked her to explain the mental turmoil she was dealing with, she didn't have the proper vocabulary or understanding of grammar to convey it. And so, she simply came off as an emotionally fragile child. That normally wouldn't have been an issue if her partner was the patient type. Whenever she was with Birdie, it always ended it tears. It was exhausting. Oniichan and Bearmon seemed to recognize this within moments of meeting the dysfunctional duo, something they chose not to sit back and watch. Oniichan's spot-on analysis had some impact on Birdie, if only to silence her long enough to locate the Digivice, but Unica was too distraught to pay attention to his words. She sat huddled in the middle of the road, curled into a ball with her knuckles pressed against her eyes. They weren't going anywhere fast.

The talons raking against his chest does not bother him, even if it did, this is a small pain. Gryz looked angry, rightfully so. However, Tetsu glared at him, telling him to stay put. The bear had no choice but to trust his partner. The flailing was nothing. He doesn't even need to use his full strength for this.
"...You look at that. Even when she saw her partner losing her temper like this she still blamed herself. You never did, huh? Catastrophic partnership this is... And I'll not let it stay like this. Sooner or later you'll meet an ugly end if you somehow keep this dynamics with you. You know this. There are people stronger than me out there... no, stronger than us. None of them would wait you to get strong enough or ready. Would you still blame her when that happened?"
Tetsu ripped his shirt off.leaving him with just the jacket. Little use shirt like this. His muscular torso still trickling with fresh blood... Birdie's talons has struck where his old scars was, three huge claw marks that run from his upper left pectorals to his right obliques. He tossed the rag to nearest trash bin.
"Gryz, sorry, but please."
"...T'was reckless, brother."
Gryz approached Tetsu and casted a technique that healed his wound. Tetsu took out a water bottle from his infini-store and poured it at the leftover blood. It might won't be cleaned up simply with just that, but whatever... There are more pressing matter... especially the sobbing girl.
"...Hey," Tetsu's voice softened again as he kneeled right in front of the sobbing girl. "Can you look at me? I know I was scary back then, but... I won't just like that leave you. I'll still help you... but I want to ask you something first, Unica."
He wanted to pat her head, or hug her and tell her that it's alright. After all, that's what his big brother do whenever he messed up back when he's a kid... His big brother is a patient guy... and even if they often have sibling spats, they always make up before dinner. But... he also remembered there are times that he just want to be left alone. At that sort of time, his brother would just sit beside him until he's ready to talk. Tetsu now uses his brother's method to try pacifying the girl. If she looked at him, he would start talking again, but... if she still just sob, he would gave her time until she stopped crying.
"...Are you tired? Are you tired of getting yelled at? Are you tired of being treated like this? ...What are you feeling right now, Unica? It's OK, take it slow..."

As Tetsu continued to scold Birdie, his words didn't seem to land; or, if they did, they didn't appear to have any affect on the temperamental Biyomon. She didn't have anything else to say on the matter. Even when the boy delivered veiled threats that she would one day meet an ugly end by a force much stronger than himself, Birdie didn't bother lifting her head from her wing. At the moment, what was most important was cleaning the dirt from her feathers so that she could fly again without being weighted down. Needless to say, tensions were high. With any luck, things would settle down as long as Birdie kept her mouth shut and didn't try to engage in combat again.
Tetsu did have a point, though. Multiple excellent points, in fact, but one in particular. His comment that Unica and Birdie's partnership was catastrophic was nothing less than the truth. It seemed as if the powers that be had hoped that by pairing such a young, naive, and generous girl with the hostile, easy-to-anger spitfire that was Birdie, perhaps the two would help one another. Birdie could help protect Unica and teach her that she shouldn't trust everyone she meets, no matter how nice they may seem at first. And Unica could help teach Birdie how to be more patient and caring, especially with those who are less capable. Things didn't turn out that way, and so the partners found themselves in a relationship where neither really got what they wanted. It was an perpetual lose-lose situation between the two.
Fortunately, Tetsu and Gryz were there to help solve this particular issue by temporarily putting Birdie in her place and by tending to Unica's needs. When her Oniichan knelt before her and asked if she could look at him, Unica did, mostly out of fear for making things worse. When their eyes met, he said that he understood how scary their fight was, but that he did it to help her. She didn't really know how punching her partner was supposed to help, but at least Birdie wasn't being mean anymore. Plus, Birdie didn't look like she was hurt or bleeding, so obviously the blow wasn't that bad. Unica simply swallowed hard and looked back at Tetsu who sat crouched in front of her, looking far more patient than Birdie ever had.
It was then that he asked his question. He wondered if Unica was tired, not just physically, but emotionally. Tired of getting yelled at and demeaned. He wanted to know what she was going through. Unica's throat was tight and it was hard to catch her breath, but after a few long moments of trying to steady her breathing, she was finally able to speak between hiccups. "You shouldn't fight... That's what... That's what my daddy says... I don't like... I don't like fights... It makes me sad... And I... I don't like when Birdie yells... She gets angry... She gets angry and fights... and I don't like fights..." She paused only long enough to inhale a shaky breath. Birdie sighed and rolled her eyes.
"But I didn't... I didn't..." The once-dried tears began to flow again and her voice rose in both volume and pitch as she started to lose control of her emotions again, but she continued trying to talk through it. "I didn't do good...! I... I messed up...! I... I'm sorry!" she wailed, looking over Tetsu's head and at Birdie who couldn't be bothered to even look at her tamer anymore. "I... I... She... My partner!" Unica exclaimed, her statements choppy and incohesive now as she tried to explain that she did care for Birdie, but only because she felt like she had to. For her, it was something of an unconditional love: she had to like Birdie because they were partners. At the very least, Unica was able to explain that she didn't like fighting, she didn't want anything bad to happen to Birdie, and she didn't like seeing Birdie so angry, though she also made it abundantly clear that she blamed herself for Birdie's most recent outburst.

Tetsu let the girl said her point. In his opinion she did well. She did well in talking about her point across. Tetsu honestly only heard this from his brother but... a tantrum won't get you anything. A tantrum will just make you looks ugly, and immature. No one will take you seriously. A tantrum with threats and violence are even worse, and it would crash your credibility. As much as possible, you have to get your point across by communicating. Those who are older must understand however that temper tantrum might be the only way for the kid to communicate. That's why even though Unica's words might sounded childish, and a bit incoherent in how she meant it, Tetsu just knelt in front of her and listened until she spoke all of her pieces.
"Un, you did great." Tetsu pats her head. "Fighting isn't good, right? Listen, Unica... Birdie have short temper, and that's where you have to scold her if she goes like this again. If you just cry, she won't listen to you. Of course it can't be helped that you just want to cry... but try to not, alright?" Tetsu once again wiped the tears from her face. "Get your point across like this... Talk to them. Tell what you want."
"Come here, Birdie." Tetsu turned at Birdie. Should she come, he'll now talk to her. If not... well, he'll just stay there, and Gryz would block her from leaving. It's clear that neither of them are willing to budge and will grab her by force if needed.
"...Losing your temper... how many times has this been? How many times has you fly off the rail and badmouth this kid, abuses her with your sharp words? You gotta quit it. You're shaping her not as someone who can stand up for herself. You're feeding off her insecurities, make her felt like all she did is wrong, wrong and wrong...
If you want to scold her, calm your own temper, calm your own impulses. Before words like 'stupid', 'idiot', or whatever leave that red beak of yours, stop it. You have to ask her if she know what she did is wrong. Now she just did. She just did admitted her mistake. In this time... you should tell her how it's a bad habit. She should not repeat it again, and all that. Give her the talk, with even tone. Don't raise your voice. Don't scream.
Look at her, look at her eyes.
Tell her what could happened if the Digivice is missing instead of screaming your head off and attacking random strangers. After the scolding is done, then make up. Accept her apologies, and make sure you don't bring this mistake again unless she's about to do it again. Make sure to give her way to solve problems. How? Digivice cradles can help. Perhaps some long string to attach it to her person so she won't lose it.
Now... you too must understand that you also did wrong. 'I don't do anything wrong'... If you said that then you only prove yourself to be more than a brat than she is. I already scold you before... and by now you should know what you should say to us, right? Set an example to her. She's less mature here. If you can't do that then it's useless to have any Digivices. You won't be able to evolve past Adult stage. Digimon evolution stems from bond when it comes to partnered Digimons.
Your bond at the moment is flimsy at best. You're in Lose-Lose situation."

Tetsu was a natural peacemaker. Well, a peacemaker in Unica's eyes. Even though she was crying and "acting like a baby," as Birdie would say, he reassured her by saying that she did great and even agreed that fighting isn't good. Unica nodded as he patted her head softly and went on to explain that she needed to learn how to scold Birdie. His words weren't condescending and he didn't get angry at her when she cried, even though he did say that people would be less likely to listen to her when she was crying. He was kind to her, and when he helped wipe away her tears, Unica wanted desperately to give him a hug. But she didn't.
She wanted to make him proud. She huffed loudly in an attempt to steel herself, she scrunched her nose, and she furrowed her eyebrows together. Her expression was akin to that of anger, but it was obviously not genuine. She appeared to be doing her best "scolding adult" impression. She sniffled, her face was red with humiliation and sadness, and tears continued to flow, but she looked determined to tell Birdie what was what. She couldn't deny that she was still scared of her Biyomon, but with Oniichan and Gryz there to back her up, she was feeling better about her prospects.
With that, Tetsu turned and told Birdie to come closer. She didn't -- at least, not a first. She stayed where she was, glaring daggers at the three individuals in front of her. They stayed like this for some time before the Bearmon started to step around her, moving into a position to grab her if she decided to flee, which just so happened to be exactly what she was considering. He got within range to touch her and Birdie reacted by swatted the air between them with one of her wings, not intending to hit him but hoping to keep him from actually grabbing her. "Watch it, teddy!" she hissed before turning and taking three steps closer to Tetsu and Unica then stopping again. She remained just out of reach of the human boy, worried about him punching her again.
Again Tetsu scolded her, and again she pretended not to listen. When he mentioned that Birdie was shaping Unica into someone who couldn't stand up for herself and was feeding off her insecurities, the corner of her beak lifted into a half-cocked grin, though she said nothing to shed light on exactly why she found his comment amusing. Whether or not the boy actually noticed didn't seem to matter. He continued with his rant and, after a few seconds, the smile disappeared from Birdie's face, replaced instead by a look of passive attentiveness and curiosity. No one could've known if she was actually paying attention or if her mind was elsewhere.
When Tetsu finally finished reprimanding Birdie, he fell silent and everyone waited with bated breath for what would happen next. Birdie's attention shifted to Unica who had the fake scowl still plastered on her face as she stared intently at her Digimon. Without a word, Birdie stepped around Tetsu and stood beside her still-kneeling partner. Unica's expression wavered and she half considered apologizing again, but she wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do. She glanced at Oniichan for reassurance, but the moment her gaze left Birdie's face, the purple-and-pink Digimon spoke. "You're an idiot."
Tetsu's lecture didn't have much of an affect on Birdie'e behavior. And yet, given the way Birdie had been behaving up until this point, one would've expected her tone to be full of hostility and aggression, but it wasn't. I almost sounded like she was trying to playfully tease Unica. Regardless of Birdie's real intention, Unica didn't take it as a joke. She looked back around at Birdie as she screamed, "No!" Birdie's eyes widened at the girl's exclamation, but she did not move. Unica pushed herself into the standing position. "If you have nothing nice to say, you shouldn't say it at all!" she shouted, her hands balled into tight fists as she did.
Birdie scoffed. "Don't think you're the boss of me just because some boy came along and made you feel important," she retorted, her voice staying level and calm. It was a bizarre, out of character shift in behavior for her. It was as though her nasty, hate-the-world attitude was still there in the words she chose to spoke, but it also seemed like she took some instruction from Tetsu by adjusting the tone with which she delivered those words. She wasn't losing her temper, at least not visibly, but her words still hurt.
"Stop being mean!" Unica demanded, stomping a foot on the ground for emphasis.
"I'll stop 'being mean' if you stop being a crybaby," Birdie said, her body tensing up and her voice having a slight sharpness to it, though she was doing her best to keep her anger in check.
"I'm not a crybaby!"
"You're crying right now."
"Am not!"
"Are too!" The conversation wasn't going anywhere fast, and Birdie had finally reached her breaking point. Her feathers were ruffling and she snapped her beak mere inches from Unica's face, startling the young girl and causing the tears to flow at a faster rate. She continued to shout, "We need to find that digivice! That stupid thing will help me make a name for myself, and without it, I'm weak. Now get it together and let's go!" Birdie was raw with emotion. It was as if having control over this partnership made her feel powerful; and if she was powerful, that meant she wasn't helpless and weak. The digivice was important to her because it was the only thing she believed was keeping her from realizing her worst fear.
Unica didn't seem to care. She was on a roll. She interrupted Birdie with incoherent ramblings about how the Biyomon needed to "shut up" and "be nicer." Birdie tried to say something to counter the girl's outburst, but she couldn't get a word in edgewise. She snapped her head to the side and locked eye with Tetsu, her pupils contacted into pinpricks as she silently blamed him for the state of things. Thanks to the boy's pep-talk with Unica and her newfound confidence, it had somehow gotten to the point where Unica was no longer willing to listen to anything her partner had to say, either because of her past experience with tying to get Birdie to listen or because of Birdie's still-harsh word choice in this particular instance.

Of course Tetsu doesn't look happy the moment Birdie smirked. His eyes says it all, how he gave her such a powerful glare for even being proud of doing that. Tetsu might be an 11 years old kid nearing his 12th birthday, but his experience in fighting made him have quite the intimidating glare.
"Cut it out," was all he said, with cold, sharp tone. He let Unica says her piece. Tetsu nodded at Unica, encouraging her. Still, the fault here is that Birdie spoke too soon. He watched how this unfold. At first it sounded that Birdie is learning somewhat although her tone is like that, but looks like this is not going anywhere fast. Not helping that Unica let out a temper tantrum... Oh boy. This not going well isn't it? Not helping that Birdie looking at him accusingly. Tetsu just raised his eyebrow in a mean like 'aren't you reaping what you sow?' while looking unamused.
But even then he's not entirely heartless to not stop the two. He gently pat Unica's shoulder, and looks at her eyes. He wanted to hug her, but he prefer to hug her after she understood the lesson here.
"Unica, Unica calm down. Remember what I said? If you're having temper tantrum, you're not going to be heard. Don't stomp your foot on the ground. That's tantrum. Clearly say to her 'I'm not'. If you keep repeating 'are not', 'are too', there won't be an end. Don't say 'shut up'. Calm down and say 'please listen to me'. You want partnership, right? Not this current relation? Calm down, it's OK. It's OK to be upset, but calm down.
You, Birdie, quit that, just quit it. On top of calling her an idiot, you get on her personal space, snap your beak at her, then demanded her to find the Digivice ASAP. If that's not a recipe of disaster or that you're too stuck up to know what action and reaction mean, then you can get stuck in this loop. I think I see finally how the dynamic is. OK, let me declare something important:
No, you don't have the rights to demand at the moment. No, she will not hear you if you keep hurting her feeling. No, we won't help you if you keep stuck like that. Even if you find that Digivice, without her, you're just stuck in same loop. Without her, the DIgivice is powerless. Either you learn your lesson in partnership or we won't move anywhere. We'll be stuck here, and I'm fully intend to just stick with her, until all this fiasco is done. Because clearly, at the moment your dynamics ain't helping any of you. Even an outsider like me can guess that you won't even reach Perfect stage with your current dynamic. You'll be stuck at Adult stage at most! At this moment all I see is a bully of a girl trying to assert her control back on the bullied girl, and I'm not having any of it. I'm really not."

Unica didn't even realize she was having a temper tantrum. She believed she was putting her foot down and standing up for herself, just as Oniichan had directed her to do. It wasn't until he reminded her to be calm and pointed out what she was doing wrong that she realized that she was, in fact, having a temper tantrum. His lecturing tone did hurt Unica's feelings, but it didn't send her into another crying frenzy. She understood his intentions enough to not take offense at his words. Don't stomp. Don't bicker. Don't be mean. Don't raise her voice. She nodded sharply at each point he made, taking each lesson to heart and doing her best to remember his suggestions.
When Tetsu asked Unica if she wanted the relationship to get any better, her short nods quickened into a fervent display of tousled hair. She did want things to get better. She desperately wanted her partnership with Birdie to become as great as other tamers had told her about. Birdie rolled her eyes and couldn't help but scoff a little. After all, what did this boy know about partnerships? The Bearmon was nothing more than the boy's pet. A guard dog. She would sooner stay at Rookie level than become Unica's pet.
Perhaps in response to Birdie's disapproving huff, Tetsu turned his attention to her and proceeded to -- you guessed it -- scold her. At least, that's how she perceived it. Unlike Unica, who was willing to hear the boy out and try to remedy the way she was speaking to her digital partner, Birdie was impatient with the slow progression of things. She had tried the boy's suggestions the best way she knew how and that had failed. For her, that was enough proof that his methods didn't work. She stared daggers at the human boy as he spoke, but whether she was actually listening to his words remained to be seen.
"Are you quite finished?" Birdie asked when Tetsu appeared to be done with his rant. Anyone who knew her well would've been surprised to hear how she enunciated each word she spoke and at her word choice. Quite finished? Where was the "You done yapping?" everyone was so accustomed to? Although her diction was pleasant, her expression was not. Non-existent brows were furrowed intensely over her squinted eyes and she stood tall, though she didn't seem conscious of the decision to stand at her full height and puff out her chest slightly. It appeared to be an instinctual shift in demeanor caused by her irritation at the situation and at the child in front of her.
"Firstly, shut the fuck up." Okay, so maybe she hadn't learned anything. "Secondly, shut the fuck up." Now she was just being mean. She could see Tetsu and his pet begin to stir, as if they wanted to say something, but she opened her mouth to speak over them. "Thirdly, shut the-"
"Birdie." The Biyomon's gaze shifted to the girl who had interrupted her. Though Birdie continued to face Tetsu, she watched the girl closely out of the corner of her eye. As much as Unica wanted to look at Tetsu for reassurance, she didn't. She kept her eyes locked onto Birdie as she commanded her partner to "Stop being mean." Birdie's confident, hostile posture relaxed somewhat, not because the human's words brought her comfort, but because she was both curious and amused at Unica's attempt at taming.
Birdie cocked her head and lifted an eyebrow, silently questioning Unica and whatever she dared to say next. The young girl cleared her throat nervously and gave into her desire to glance toward Tetsu. It was brief, only long enough to make sure he was still there, then she returned her attention to Birdie who appeared to be patiently waiting, for once in her life. "Why do you have to be mean all the time?" Unica asked, saying the first thing that popped into her head. Birdie sneered and was surely about to retort with some sarcastic comment, but Unica was quick to correct herself by saying, "I won't look for the phone if you're not nice to me."
"And what if I force you?" Birdie asked. Her response was a confusing one. Her choice of words made it seem as if she was threatening Unica, but her tone betrayed her conviction. It sounded like a genuine question, like she was a curious child asking an adult for help. Whether or not her rebuttal was meant to be taken as a form of intimidation didn't matter because it didn't work on Unica.
The seven-year-old crossed her arms across her chest. "No. You will be nice," she stated, making it clear that her words were not up for debate. Birdie closed her beak and watched Unica closely, her eyes narrowed into something that looked like the start of a glare, one that had yet to fully form. When Birdie said nothing, Unica reiterated her previous statement, "You will be nice."
Birdie's eyebrows set into place. "Yeah, yeah! I'll be nice!" she snapped. It was obvious to everyone around that her subordination was temporary and that she was only promising to be nice because she wanted to move past this entire confrontation and get to finding the digivice. Change wasn't an automatic thing, but the fact that Birdie was willing to taper her attitude long enough to find the digivice was a step in the right direction. If Unica kept this up then there was hope for their partnership after all.
A huge smile spread out across Unica's face as she looked back at her new friends who had helped her find the courage to stand up to Birdie once and for all. She had once compared taming Digimon to being a parent, and this conflict solidified that metaphor in her mind. She was responsible for Birdie's behavior; she had to teach Birdie right from wrong, and she had to teach Birdie manners. It would be a long and difficult road, she told herself, but if it helped fix their relationship then she would do it. Who knew, maybe it would even be a little fun!
Unica looked back at Birdie and her expression transformed into that of feigned disapproval again. "Now, say you're sorry." Birdie didn't like being told what to do. The Biyomon exhaled through her nostrils and lowered her head slightly, adopting a sort of "death glare" as she did. When Unica realized her partner wasn't going to do as she commanded, she did as she had before and restated what she wanted, "You were mean to Oniichan and Grizzly, so say you're sorry." Birdie glanced at Tetsu and Gryz, and her feathers began to ruffle in growing irritation. Unica huffed, "Say you're-"
Birdie whipped her head back to her tamer. "Bite me!"
"Be nice!" Unica snapped back. Birdie looked like she was about to hurt someone. "Say you're sorry," Unica repeated for a fourth time, her voice staying calm and steady as she spoke each word.
"Sorry," Birdie finally grumbled, though it sounded more like she was choking on something.
"I can't hear you," Unica mused, cupping her hand behind her ear. She was mirroring what she had seen her own mother do before. This was her way of emphasizing the new power dynamic, but Birdie simply found it demeaning and humiliating. The Biyomon's body trembled with bubbling rage as she did her best to hold back a tidal wave of insults and a barrage of attacks. If Tetsu and Gryz allowed Unica to continue like this without getting the duo back on track then there was no telling what Birdie would do next or how long Unica would continue to treat Birdie like an infant.
