It was a typical weekend morning. Gar had gotten up at around ten in the morning as he usually does on weekends, stretching his arms up towards his ceiling and yawning as he stretched before crawling out from under his bed's duvet. Patting his cheeks to hopefully help him wake up quicker, Gar went about picking out an outfit.
A few minutes later and Gar had nabbed a light minty green sweater, some jeans that cut off once they reached just before his ankles, and a pair of ankle socks to be hidden under a pair of dark brown boots that currently were by the entryway door to the fairly spacious apartment. The sun was still streaming into his bedroom from the cracks in between is curtains in the window, some dust floating by lazily. He'll have to clean his room up a bit later, maybe his mother would praise him for it when she came home later in the night. Speaking of his parents, Gar's mother was usually the one who was out during the day for work, typically not coming home until fairly late in the night. His father would leave for work about two hours before his mother returned, leaving Gar time to do whatever at home until someone came back. Of course he could probably wander around town at that time as well, but since it was typically already dark out by then, Gar would just stay at home, maybe even look up some recipes on the home computer he could make with his mom once she got back; of course with plenty room to leave leftovers for his parents to take to work.
Taking his bundle of clothes up into his arms, Gar padded over to the bathroom in order to get his morning shower out of the way. The slightly chilled water did a wonderful job of properly waking Gar up, and he made a hasty venture of cleaning up, shutting off the water, and drying off before dressing in the clothes he had snagged from his dresser and closet respectfully. Clothes on, Gar took a hair dryer and a brush and went at his hair, trying to tame it as best as possible today. Ten minutes later and it didn't look half bad.
Pulling a lock of hair of to the side for inspection between his fingers, Gar hummed. "I'll have to buy some dye shampoo, this color is starting to fade out," he mused to himself. Now satisfied with his appearance, Gar made it out into the the open space that functioned as the kitchen, dining room, and living room. It was the first area you saw upon entering the apartment. the first door led to his parents' room, then the bathroom he'd just come out of, and then his room. At the end of the hall was the office with the home computer where Gar typically did any online homework or research for a project. Or to just play video games.
Looking around the space, Gar wasn't surprised to see some fresh dishes in the sink and his father missing from the space. Gar's dad typically stayed asleep until noon or after if the man could help it, but as of late Gar has been making a habit of making breakfast and waking his dad up to join him. Gar was pretty sure his dad just went back to sleep after Gar usually did the dishes and left for the day, but it was still nice to talk with his dad in the morning. His father had also been saying his cooking has been improving so that was a plus as well.
Gar walked over the his parents' bedroom door, knocking a few time before speaking. "Daad, I'm gonna be making breakfast soon! Time to get up for a bit."
Although muffled, from behind the door came the sound of a waking up snore. "Hmng? Huh, oh yeah, sure thing kiddo jus'.. jus' five more minutes."
"I'll check in five minutes then."
Around forty minutes later, Gar had successfully made a simple breakfast that wasn't burnt to a crisp, just slightly toasty, and woken up his father. Garret's father was a rather simple looking man, a bit heavy set, black stubble and messy short black hair. He was a few shades darker than his son and dark brown eyes hidden behind thick rimmed glasses rather then a deep dark green like Gar. The man didn't eat quickly but rather took the time to talk to his son about how school was going and what his plans for the day were.
"I think I'm gonna explore around the central park later, maybe pick up some more hair dye on the way home," Gar had gladly replied before taking a large bite of food.
"Didn't you explore the central park area last week? Heh, you'd think you've found every nook and cranny already."
"I haven't yet! Plus I usually get distracted and end up just playing with the park cats all day or picking up litter strewn around."
"Well if your interested in suggestions, there's a river in that area. When I was young and first visited the country and this city, the river was a wonderfully beautiful and clear thing. But now it's just a glorified garbage heap." Gar's father sighed, pushing his glasses up his nose with his forefinger. "A shame really. If you're willing though, cleaning it out a bit would be a wonderful way to pass the time."
Gar was already interested. I mean he planned on being in that area anyways for the day, and he already picked up litter around the park when he passed it. Plus it was just a good thing to do! Imagine how happy people would be seeing the river nice and clean again! "I'll do it! Sounds fun!"
Gar's father laughed heartily. "That's great to hear. Take some plastic bags with you and some rubber gloves then, wouldn't want you getting cut on anything."
Garret had now been at the Shibuya river for awhile now, carefully picking up trash around the banks first. Aside from the bags he was filling with trash, a few already stuffed and by some trees, Gar also had a backpack strapped to his back. It had a raincoat, a reusable bottle of water, a few spare socks, and his wallet in there. Oh! And his Kalimba for when he wanted to take a break. It was when he was bringing another filled bag back up, that Gar heard some people talking. They sounded around his age so he tried to peek around to see them first. He'd been right, it was a small group of three kids around his age; two boys and a girl all chatting about something, seemingly just passing by before they noticed Gar. It was one of the boys who spoke first, a bit taller than the other two kids.
"Hah? What're you doing around this dump? You scavenging or something kid?"
"Um, no. I'm not scavenging. I'm just trying to clean up the area! My dad said it used to be a really nice place-"
"Oh please it's always been a trash dump and gonna stay being a trash dump. How many bags do you even have filled already? Doesn't even look like much has been done!" The girl besides the boy who's been speaking laughed, apparently amused by what the boy said.
Gar simply just tilted his head to the side, confused. He was trying to be helpful, why were they laughing? "You're just rude. You should have more faith in other people's efforts," Gar replied.
The boy scoffed. "Aah, well don't you have a smart mouth for another piece of trash."
"Hey! Now you're just proving my point!" The other boy of the group who had been quietly watching decided to speak up.
"Should we dump him with the rest of the trash then?"
The taller boy grinned back at the quiet one. "A wonderful idea! He should learn his place after all!" They started walking towards him. Gar took careful steps back. "Don't worry, you'll be fine! It's just a heap of trash!" They pushed their hand towards Gar, and he slipped into murky stinking water.
The bag on his back pulled him along, darker yet darker...
"-h no, he should be fine.."
Gar coughed, and rolled over on his side. He felt wet and very tired.
"Oh you're awake! Are you alright? You can breath okay, right?"
Who was talking to him? Gar cracked his eye's open, closing them tight a moment later at the sudden brightness. Taking a moment to adjust, Gar sat up and rubbed at his eyes and carefully opened them.
"Oh I should introduce myself! Hello, I am Gabumon. It's nice to meet you! Well of course it would be nice to meet you not half drowned but this works too I guess." This, Gabumon they said, holds one of their hands out towards Gar. It looks like it has scales? Gar took their hand and give it a quick shake.
"Call me Gar. Uh, where am I?"
"You don't know? Well, you're in the Digital World! Most people lately know before they get here," they explain with a timid grin.
"Oh sorry. I kinda just fell in." Gar took this moment to actually look around. It looked so different. So, "Coool.. Everything looks so nice!" Gar seems to have regained their usual spunk as they get up and look more. Behind them is a crystal clear river and a semi-dry trail of water leading to him. Wait.
"Hey where's my stuff?"
"I hung it up on some branches to dry, it was soaked through. Here follow me I tried putting them in a sunny patch." Gabumon then trots off, clearly expecting Gar to follow. Of course Gar did just that. As he followed he looked at the plants around him. Seeing a particularly cool one, he reached out and-
"Don't touch that one." Gabumon had grabbed his hand and stopped him. "It's poisonous and I don't have anything on me should you get pricked by it."
"Sorry! I should pay a bit more attention," Gar replied, gladly letting Gabumon lead him by the hand instead.
"It's alright, you're new around here. Just be careful."
Soon enough Gar spotted his bag hanging on a tree as he'd been told. Gabumon let go of his hand and Gar took the opportunity to dash over to his bag and check its contents. Damp raincoat? Check. Damp wallet? Check. Still very wet extra pairs of socks? Absolutely. His water bottle was still in there as well. Gar turned back towards Gabumon with a wide grin spread across his face. "Thank you! I don't know what I would have done if I'd lost all my stuff!"
Gar thought it looked like Gabumon's fur went a bit pink for a moment. "Of course, it was not a problem." Gabumon then fishes something out from their fur which, now that Gar looked more carefully, seemed to actually be a separate pelt just draped over them.
"O-Of course, it was just the right thing to do. I found this by you as well. I don't think it's waterlogged though," Gabumon said as he held up a white and green device up to Gar.
Carefully, Gar took the offered device and inspected it. "Well, thank you but this isn't mine. I don't own anything like this."
"Really? But, no one else has been around here lately. I should know since I've pretty much set up camp here for the last few days"
"Well, it wouldn't hurt to keep it anyways. Maybe I'll find who it belongs to when I get home! How.. How do I get home by the way?"
"Oh. You just have to sink yourself back in the river. Which now that I've said it doesn't sound the best and just means your things will be all wet again," Gabumon mused, lacing their hands together again.
"That's alright! I can just dry it off once I get home," Gar replied with a bright grin, the device in his hand clutched to his chest. "I should really get going now, thank you for helping me."
"Ah, of course of course, please stay safe! It wouldn't be best if I had to drag you out of the water again," Gabumon replied with a nervous grin. Gar laughed as he double checked his bag before zipping it up once more.
"Will you be staying around here for much longer?" Gar had asked with a light tilt of his head.
"What? Oh, well, I plan to yes. Why?"
"This place looks really cool! And you seem really nice and pretty much saved my life so visiting again doesn't seem like a bad idea. It isn't right?"
Gabumon gave a genuine, if a bit shy, grin. "No I don't think it would be bad."

...
He was hallucinating. Or maybe he was dead. Because some, blue and white striped, dog? An animal was talking to him, and holding their hands in front of their chest with worry. "what... what is happening..?""Oh I should introduce myself! Hello, I am Gabumon. It's nice to meet you! Well of course it would be nice to meet you not half drowned but this works too I guess." -One Month Later-
Gabumon perked up as they heard splashing and crashing water, getting up to trot over to the source. Gar was treading through the water towards the bank, a brighter than usual grin upon his face. "Gar be careful on the rocks! They're slippery!" He called out.
"I'm always careful! I'm just excited!" Gar slipped a little bit, but otherwise safely made it to the bank and towards Gabumon.
"I've never known you to be careful but if you say so. What has you so excited today?"
"Oh! I made you something!" With that, Gar fished out a thick loop of red and green braided string, holding it out. "It's called a friendship bracelet! I made it few days ago but I haven't been able to visit so I'm giving it to you now!"
Gabumon laughs happily. "Thank you, Gar. So this means that we are friends?" He asked as he sniffed the object.
"Only if you want to be but yes!"
Gabumon paused for a moment, seemingly considering his options. "..Uhm, how do you put it on?"
Gar beamed. "Here I'll help you!" And Gar did just that, slipping the bracelet over Gabumon's wrist and pelt. "Oh also! You said that there are other digimon that share your name, right?"
"Mhm, that's right, why do you ask?" Gabumon replied, inspecting the friendship bracelet around his wrist.
"Can we pick a specific name then? It would be confusing of we ran into another Gabumon."
"Mm, you have a point. I'll consider it."
"What about Stripe?"
"No."
"Fang?"
"Nope."
"Scout!"
"Try again."
"Ruby!"
"...I'll consider it.."
Gar beamed, clearly happy with this outcome. Their mood must have seeped over to Ru- Gabumon, as well, as a grin spread across their snout. Gar was their human now, their friend. And he intended to keep them safe from here on out.
