Taking a Bite out of the Wallet [Adrian]

As Adrian was still preparing his and Shoutmon's hot dogs, both of them caught a glimpse of the way Roger eats. Not only was it very unconventional, but the toppings were getting flung everywhere. No wonder Hiroyo gave Roger half of the table to himself, as that side was covered in hot dog toppings. More flung onto the hot dogs themselves, too!
"Does he eat like that all the time?" Adrian asked Hiroyo as he finished putting the toppings on Shoutmon's hot dogs, leaving no toppings for himself. That was fine though; Adrian preferred his hot dogs to be plain... so hopefully none of Roger's condiment goop landed on them. "Yeesh... I'll never make fun of your eating habits ever again, Shoutmon."
"Yeah, I can kinda see why you did it..." Shoutmon said, in awe of what Roger was doing. Hiroyo noticed that Shoutmon got everything on his hot dogs too, and she pleaded Shoutmon to eat neatly. Shoutmon gave Hiroyo a big ol' grin. "Don'tcha worry. I may have a big appetite, but I always make sure the food goes into my mouth instead of, say, the floor."
Having said that, Shoutmon grabbed one of his hot dogs and tossed the whole thing into his mouth. He was definitely eating neatly, as he wasn't being gross about it, aside from putting the whole hot dog in his mouth. His eyes lit up after swallowing. "Wow, these are actually pretty good! Better than the ones they have in the human world!"
As the group ate, Hiroyo explained how she met Roger and Morgan. She apparently inherited the Digivice from a friend of hers. Adrian didn't like the sound of that at all. "Your friend, they... they didn't die, did they?"
If Adrian's fears were true, then that would pretty much be a depressing mood to transition into. Hiroyo asked the same for him: how did he meet Shoutmon? "It started when my family moved into a new house in Shibuya a couple years ago. I went up to my new room and there was a random TV in it. It suddenly turned itself on, and the TV wasn't even plugged in. Before I knew it, a Digiport had opened, with Shoutmon and my Digivice coming through it."
"First thing he did upon meeting me was slap himself in the face."

The return question about the fate of the original holder of the digivice cast a rather awkward silence over Morgan and Hiroyo. The red head smiled a small, tight smile and nodded sadly before answering.
"Unfortunately he, he passed away after a car accident, so over in the other world." She picked up her own hot dog and took a big bite. Her movements were wooden but determined, she wasn't going to let a bit of awkwardness slow down her pleasant outing with an acquintence!
Even she had to stop at Shoutmon's addendum to Adrian's story. Her eyebrows raised up and she made a noise that was definately not snorting around her mouthful of hot dog. The very ambiguous noise turned into a quick lean away from the table and a small bout of coughing as Roger finished off his second hot dog and swivelled his beak in Adrian's direction. Morgan reached over to give her a swat on the back and she sat upright catching her breath as he turned his attention back to the rest of the table.
"Why in the Dark Area would you slap yourself?" He said wonderingly as he tried to puzzle out the logic train. The lightning bolts on his face pulsed as he thought more about it. "That'd impede your vision, right? Or at least sting your face something fierce I'd think. Oh! Was it a reality check? Couldn't you just, pinch yourself?"
Morgan coughed discretely, his expression suprisingly not hard to read with the mischevious twinkle in his eye. "I could see how a face palm would be the first reaction upon such an unprecedented event. Especially if one is familiar with a certain genre of entertainment."
"Isekai." Hiroyo wheezed out as she followed Morgan's train of thought. She grinned widey despite her heavy breathing and her eyes slid over to Shoutmon. "So, was that the first time you were, well, alive? Or were you around before that?"

The mood definitely grew a bit more grim as Hiroyo shared the unfortunate fate of the brothers' previous partner. And to die in a car accident, no less... while Adrian could think of a few more even worse ways to die, a car accident is surely up there. He looked right at Hiroyo with saddened eyes.
"When I was nine years old, one of my twin cousins died in a car crash as well. The funeral was horrible. The other twin cried his eyes out, and to this day I still can't have a normal conversation with him. I... I don't know what I'd do if I lost someone else I cared about, to be honest with you... what I'm trying to say is, I'm sorry. To both of you."
"It's sad how humans can't reincarnate like Digimon can," Shoutmon said, sounding more neutral than his previous joyful tone of before. "Once they're gone, they're gone for good. They have one life to be able to do whatever they want, and they have to spend a third of it for training." He stopped and looked away, as if not wanting to talk about this depressing subject anymore.
After a bit of time passed so that the mood could change. Shoutmon mentioned how Adrian slapped himself in the face when they first met, and the redness on Adrian's face was apparent. "That's the one thing you wanted to single out?!"
"Well, what else do you want me to say? You were completely speechless when we met! It's like you had never even seen a Digimon before!"
"I hadn't..." Adrian said, looking away in embarrassment and anger while the others laughed.
Then Hiroyo dropped a bomb. She wanted to know what Shoutmon was like in a previous life. The two partners looked at each other and gulped, looking back at Hiroyo. "A-Are you sure you want to know? It's not the... best history a Digimon could ever have, eheheheh..."

The hand wave Hiroyo gave as she accepted their condolences could be considered flippant, but in truth neither she nor the bugs wanted to dwell on the sad parts of it. "It happened, it hurts, but knowing him was good."
There was a subtle shift in the group's composure as Shoutmon and Adrian showed obvious signs of concern. Roger straightened up, his beak turned unerringly toward them like he was a radar for the most interesting topic of conversation. Morgan's eyes narrowed and he stared at them quietly. They both seem to hang on the words that had been spoken but were leaving it up to Hiroyo to actually ask.
Hiroyo herself looked at them curiously for a moment then she picked up her hot dog and took a small bite. She quietly chewed as she considered her words, the fact she was leaving the two to sweat over what she might say made her internally grin a bit. Did she want to know? When asking how someone had been was such a loaded question in this world, how bad could the past be? But on the other hand she was incredibly curious about the answer that warranted such a reaction.
She finished chewing and swallowed, wiping her mouth with her napkin.
"Not if you don't want to tell us. I just wondered if you had been around before meeting Adrian and it sounds like thats a yes." She finally said. She flashed them a grin as Roger face planted into the table and Morgan let out a quiet sigh of disappointment. "We've only met each other twice, and I won't deny I'm curious but...you deserve privacy about hard things too."
"I suppose that is sensible, respectful too." Morgan nodded, chided by his own curiosity. He picked up one of his hot dogs and carefully considered it. "We may share our past with you but that does not place an obligation on you to do the same. I must apologize, I fear I let my curiosity get away from me a bit."
"Oh come on, that's gotta be way more interesting than just eating!" Roger complained, picking his head up off the table. There was a smear of ketchup-mayo across his forehead but he didn't seem to notice.
"Well if you want interesting...ooh. I have an idea. Want to hear it?" With a lift of her eyebrow Hiroyo indicated Adrian, a playful grin on her face. It was an out if he didn't want to talk about the past.

"To put it simply and shortly, yes, I was around before I was bonded to Adrian," Shoutmon said, definitely sounding like he didn't even want to dwell on that topic of discussion much farther. Too bad Hiroyo and the twins were definitely interested in what they had to say regarding that.
Both Roger and Morgan had reactions to the two of them not wanting to share their story. Morgan simply sighed. Roger overreacted by slamming his head on the table. At least Morgan came around after Hiroyo explained that they barely knew Adrian and Shoutmon, and that they shouldn't pride in on their personal business.
Roger began to complain some more, saying that sharing their story would be more interesting than just eating. Adrian and Shoutmon definitely noticed the condiments on the Kunemon's forehead. They both started to laugh without telling Roger anything, which would probably confuse him a lot.
Okay, I kind of hope he doesn't find out about that, Adrian thought to himself as he laughed, because him walking around like that is just too perfect!
Adrian looked at Hiroyo with confusion when she mentioned having an idea. He definitely had no idea what she was planning, and he didn't know if he'd like it. "Uh... sure?"

Shoutmon and Adrian were completely correct about Roger not noticing the smear on his forehead. He cocked his head quizically and his antenna thrashed above him but other than that he wasn't planning on voicing his confusion. Clearly it was a weakness and he had to be on point in his game of making a good impression on Shoutmon! The red dragon seemed like the kinda person who wouldn't be afraid to raise a lot of noise to get things done.
That was the kinda 'mon he wanted to have on his side. Even if the what he was doing before was being very boringly locked away from Roger's knowledge with awful things like 'the concept of privacy' and 'respecting social norms'.
Bah. At least the nervousness Adrian clearly had in regards to Hiroyo's question was amusing.
The aforementioned red head laced her fingers together beneath her chin and leaned forward across the table, her elbows very carefully bracketing her plate of hot dogs. The smile on her face was a friendly conspiratorial sort. The drop in volume to just below her normal speaking voice was shady as well.
"Well, we haven't been able to really interact with a lot of folks outside of a few jobs and the occasional chance meeting. Surely someone like yourselves who have travelled around a lot must be very well informed! So lend your knowledge to big-sister Hiroyo: what's the latest on people you've met in the digital world? Who's the most difficult to work with? Who's the easiest? Did you run into 'stick-in-the-mud' types or are most people pretty easy goin? Who's holding hands with who?"
Morgan rolled his eyes with a mutter of 'gossip' and went back to eating his hotdogs.

They couldn't help it; Roger's smudge on his forehead was just too hilarious. Still, they had to say something since Roger was clearly confused, and it was pretty distracting from the conversation at hand. "Dude, you got a little somethin' there," Shoutmon said to the Kunemon, pointing to his own forehead.
Adrian and Shoutmon watched Hiroyo as she looked at the two of them while rubbing her chin, her smile forming into a smile you'd see when someone has a plan. Neither of them liked that look on her face; they were pretty worried about what she was going to say next.
This girl was nice and friendly a minute ago, and now she's making me pretty nervous, Adrian thought to himself.
And now Hiroyo starts to speak again, this time she only wanted to know one thing: gossip. She asked the two of them several questions ranging from "who do you know" all the way to "who's dating who", and it was all essentially garbage you'd find on a show like TMZ or a gossip tabloid at the store.
The two of them sweatdropped and laughed nervously. Adrian tried to sum it up best. "Look, Hiroyo, we're not the gossiping type. You can't judge someone based on what others say about them. So I don't really think either of us can answer your questions."
"Yeah, I agree... gossip isn't our style."

"What?! Why didn't you say anything?!" This second part was directed to Hiroyo and Morgan who both shrugged and looked completely nonplussed by Roger's sudden anger. Roger's antenna twitched and jerked as Morgen helpfully alerted his brother to the location by gesturing to his own forehead to give Roger something to go off of.
The Kunemon grumbled under his breath then stretched out to snag a napkin off the pile Hiroyo had grabbed and dragged it open on the table with his beak. He lined himself up then lunged forward to headbutt the napkin - right as a breeze fluttered it away. He made an awful grating noise with his beak as he lifted his head to inspect the span of table, disappointed that he hadn't even managed to transfer a little of the mess off himself.
"Whaaat? C'mon, this isn't about judging it's about entertainment! Hiroyo declared, propping her chin up on one hand to pout at both Adrien and Shoutmon. It seemed more like an act than a real complaint, especially if Morgan's little quiet chuckle was anything to go by.
"Your respect for your fellows is both heartening and refreshing. She truly means no harm." He remarked. He was very clearly amused and his smile was obvious from his eyes. "Due to extended stays in the Digital World she has been missing her drama shows lately, although I suspect this might be a good thing."
"Pfft! What could be good about finding out if Junpei discovers his neighbor is an alien or not second hand?? Or-or reading some idiot's opinion on whether or not Aki and Hiroshi should have kissed, if they kiss, without seeing the scene myself first?" She complained, flinging her hands wide and gesturing energetically to prove her point. She was relaxing as she talked though, and despite all her complaining she wasn't pressing the two to share anymore info. "I mean it seems like I only go back to work and let my roommate know I'm not dead and then we're already back here again! I just don't have time anymore-oh Roger, let me get that."
Morgan chuckled again as Hiroyo broke off her tirade with a sigh and reached out to grab a napkin and the side of Roger's head before he started shaking it in an attempt to fling the goop off of him and set to work cleaning him up. "We have been rather busy. We have been spending a lot of time in Rosewood and have been keeping an eye on news on TamerNet about what is going on as well as doing our own thing. Have you two been doing anything interesting lately?"
He bit into his hotdog after he spoke, giving the two time to talk while also making a show of how much of a neat and tidy eater he was.

"Probably for the same reason we didn't say anything first," Shoutmon told Roger after he found out about the smudge of condiments on his forehead, "simply because it was funny!"
Adrian watched as the little Kunemon attempted to wipe the smudge off of his forehead with a napkin, only for said napkin to be taken away by the wind. The human simply got out of his seat and kneeled down toward Kunemon, taking out his own clean napkin. "Hold still for me please," Adrian would ask Roger before going in and rubbing off the smudge himself. After it was all clean, Adrian would crumple up the napkin. "There we go."
Back to Hiroyo, when being called out on her hunting for drama, she claims it's not for judging but for "entertainment". Adrian rolled his eyes lightly at that statement. "Look, I just got done with high school and I've already gone through all that drama. There's no way I'm going to be starting any of that with my Digital World friends."
Morgan chuckled a little, claiming that Hiroyo has been missing her drama TV shows, and that's why she was acting like this. This was then followed by Hiroyo claiming that she didn't care whether or not certain characters kissed or not. "Ah geez, you're talking about those dumb soap operas on TV, aren't you? I appreciate a good story and character interactions as much as the next guy, but there's a line you cannot cross in my eyes. Just not my thing I suppose."
Ah, now the question of what Adrian and Shoutmon were up to is next. "That depends: do you want to hear about our Demon Lords encounter? Or the time we were in a Digital Shift? We got plenty of options for that!"

At Adrian's request the Kunemon stopped fidgetting and held still so the other human could wipe off the stuff on his forehead. One antenna twitched in annoyance at the whole process as Hiroyo paused to giggle at Roger. "This would be a lot easier to prevent if I had hands."
"If you would eat slower and let me cut your food up it'd be easier too!" She chided, pulling her hands back from reaching out to help. She gestured to the remains of the meal and quirked an eyebrow at the bug. Once Adrian drew back she reached out to swipe a couple stray streaks of gross off his face with a napkin. "I don't know why you feel the need to eat so often. It's not like I'm going to let you go hungry. Well, not like, more than it takes to find a place to eat that won't bankrupt us."
With a shake of his head Morgan ignored the two squabbling to listen to the two lay out what they had been doing. He rubbed a claw thoughtfully under his beak as he considered the choices. On one han the Demon Lords were a current and constant issue that they would no doubt become entangled with again, and perhaps very soon. On the other hand he had never heard of a Digital Shift before. The allure of something new was always a draw though.
"We have no pressing arrangements, if you do though perhaps just one of the stories. Would you share the tale of the Digital Shift?"
Hiroyo pouted for a moment as she considered pushing for the Demon Lord then finally nodded agreement with Morgan. If there were more threats out there it was better to hear about as many as they could. "Yeah! That one sounds interesting, we can swap demon lord stories later. So what's a, what did you call it? Digital Shift?"
"Fight anything cool or fun?"

"Hiroyo, if there's anything I've learned about being a Digimon Tamer, telling a Digimon to eat less is like trying to get a teenage girl to spend some time away from her phone," Adrian joked as he finished wiping the smudge off of Roger's forehead. "Although she is right, Roger; you need to eat a bit slower and a lot cleaner."
Adrian and Shoutmon have a lot of stories about their past to tell, but the ones at the top of their heads were the Demon Lords adventure with GranDracmon, or the time they were trapped in a Digital Shift. Hiroyo, Roger and Morgan all pretty much chose to hear the Digital Shift story. "You may wanna get comfortable..."
Adrian sat back down in his chair and began recalling the events. "Shoutmon and I hunt rogue Digimon in the human world and send them back to the Digital World, y'know? So we suddenly get this huge signal from the Museum of Natural History in Udon, so we naturally go there."
"The only problem was that the signal was so big, I was sensing it coming from practically everywhere and we couldn't figure out where it was actually coming from."
"That is until I saw this one kid walk by one of the monitor screens there, and as soon as he did it glitched out. I thought he'd be a key in locating the rogue Digimon. Next thing you know, he walks down a hallway and just... disappears. I followed him, and that's when we found out about Digital Shifts."
"It's like an area where some of the Digital World bleeds into the human world, creating an in-between world kinda thing."
Adrian and Shoutmon would let them process this before continuing.

A giggle escaped Hiroyo as she nodded along with Adrian's comparison between digimon and teenage girls. In her case it had definately been true! For a brief moment she considered digging both of her phones out of her purse but then dismissed it. As far as jokes go it wouldn't be that funny and it'd raise questions she really didn't want to answer. Instead she added on to Adrian's words.
"I really don't mind if you eat a lot, but just be neat about it!" Roger huffed and looked away from them.
"We should clear some of this mess away first." Morgan said when it was suggested that they get comfortable. Hiroyo nodded and stood up, quickly but carefully gathering up plates and napkins and passing some over to Morgan. They carried their waste to the trash bin and Hiroyo sighed happily. Morgan shot her a look. "Pleased by the garbage can?"
"No! Although the seashell aesthetic is cute. It's just, well, today! It's warm out but the breeze keeps it from being too hot and it's quieter here than by the beach." Hiroyo said, gesturing to the office buildings around them. The sound of the city was dampened here, and the raucous cries of beach goers almost completely gone. The sound of the waves still carried here but it was unobtrusive background noise at this point.
Morgan nodded his understanding as they sat back down. Besides the occasional misstep where Adrian and Shoutmon or Hiroyo and one of the bugs found a sore spot for the other group the overall atmosphere was relaxed. A pleasant break from what had become their usual: moments of dangerous activity and high emotions.
Once the two had settled back down at the table Hiroyo adjusted her had and gestured for Adrian and Shoutmon to tell her tale. Roger stopped pretending to sulk to pay attention, and the other two's attention was obvious from the rapt way they watched the pair speak.
"Wait, the kid made the computers glitch out or was that just something that happened to happen?" Hiroyo asked, tapping her chin.
"Pfft, who gives a crap if he caused it or not? If you see someone like that in a place like that you gotta follow, even if it has trap written all over it!" Roger smirked. "Especially if it has trap written all over it!"
"To merge the two worlds together like that, especially with such a large signal. ..Natural phenomena or manufactured?" Morgan mused out loud. Hiroyo giggled nervously and then gestured for Shoutmon and Adrian to continue their tale.
"Did you find the boy again? Was he okay?"

Adrian laughed some more as the conversation continued. "You know the game Kirby? Where it's practically confirmed that the main character's stomach is another universe? I'm pretty sure most Digimon go based off of that logic as well."
"Hey!"
After Hiroyo and Morgan threw away the group's trash, they sat back down and listened to more of Adrian and Shoutmon's story. Hiroyo asked if the kid himself had made the screen glitch out or if it just happened. "I'm not 100%, but I thought it was because he was somehow linked to the Digital World. I later found out that I was right."
Roger and Morgan had voiced their interest as well. Roger agreed with Adrian's initial decision, because apparently there would be a risk for a kind of trap. "Not all traps are good, Roger. Walk into a trap and suddenly you might become brainwashed and attack those you love on sight, nothing more than a simple slaaaaave!" Shoutmon said, trying to spook Roger a little bit. What was scarier than brainwashing?
Afterwards, they continued the story. "When we entered the Digital Shift, it was as if all the humans in the museum just vanished. I walked down the hall to the Native American exhibit, and that's where I found the kid. His name was Zachary, and it turned out that he was a Tamer as well that was separated from his partner. He was completely confused about just walking into a Digital Shift.
"And before more could be said, we were suddenly attacked by a DinoHumon and four Guilmon. The Guilmon were completely feral but DinoHumon was intelligent enough to speak. Before we knew it, it attacked us!"
"And that's when I came out of the Digivice and Digivolved, before doin' my thing, kicking dino butt. Sadly I was mainly focused on the big green guy and could help with the small red guys."
"I attempted to fight off the Guilmon while Zachary got out of there, like I asked him to. Thankfully I got the idea to use the Wings of Light card on my partner at the time. He grabbed me and we flew out of there, out of their reach."

"So, screen glitching was caused by just being related to the digital world? That's kinda weird, I wonder if I cause issues like that..." Hiroyo trailled off and actually let Adrian continue the story after a reprimanding nudge from Morgan.
Roger opened his beak to retort but Hiroyo oh-so-kindly passed the friendly nudge on his way. For a moment he swivelled his head toward her with narrowed face-stripes but she just smiled politely with faux-innocence and confusion as if she didn't know why he was giving her such a look despite her elbow nudge being very open and obvious.
Hiroyo clapped her hands over her mouth at the description of the attack, her eyes wide as she listened to the fight. She had heard about feral digimon before, and had met a DinoHumon too! She didn't think this was the same one - an attack in the human world just didn't seem like the thing the Ashikaga clan would do! Her face quickly shifted to confusion when Shoutmon broke in and Adrian mentioned using a card.
"Wait, you came out of the digivice? Wings of Light?" She dropped her hands back to the table as she leaned forward.
"Mmm, a digivice upgrade I believe and a card from Cardmon's shop." Morgan sighed at the only change to Hiroyo's clueless expression being a quirk of her eyebrow and gestured toward Adrian and Shoutmon. "At the mall you can buy upgrades for the Digivice from Flamon and Lunamon."
"Oh right... the mall..." Hiroyo looked and sounded surprisingly dejected at the mention of a place meant for shopping. It was definately odd considering her love of trendy outfits. Roger snickered and winked at Shoutmon while Hiroyo sighed. She straightened up and gestured toward Adrian to continue the story. "So, what happened next with the Digital Shift?"

Post by Adrian Boriker on Nov 8, 2019 0:20:37 GMT
Hiroyo asked if she could possibly cause issues like making screens glitch out like Zachary did. "I don't think so, it may have just been a random event that happened purely by coincidence. It could've happened to everything with a screen, for all I know."
As the two of them finished telling the first battle part of the story, Hiroyo questioned what they meant by using a "Wings of Light" card to get away. Clearly she hadn't heard of a D-Arc before. Morgan informed her on what a D-Arc and cards were before either Adrian or Shoutmon could tell her. For some reason she sounded kinda disgusted by the idea of the Terminus Mall. Sure, it wasn't the BEST mall you could go to, but it certainly wasn't bad.
Now, to continue the story... "We kinda just kept going until we were completely positive we weren't being followed. Not long after that we ran into Zachary, along with a random Bearmon he had met before. The Bearmon said he was going on a Trailmon back from the Digital World, when some kind of portal caused him to end up in the Digital Shift."
"Before we could actually... y'know, figure out what was actually going on, Bearmon really wanted to get food somewhere."
"Even at the worst possible moments, Digimon still gotta eat, I guess. We roamed the halls looking for the cafeteria in the museum, and when we found it, it was guarded by a load of Guilmon and a Stegomon. Fighting them wasn't an option."
