Taking a Bite out of the Wallet [Adrian]

Hiroyo propped her chin up on one hand as she listened. She vaguely wished she had something to nibble on as Adrian talked, not because she was still hungry but simply because it seemed to be the mood for it. Fries would be perfect right now, or maybe popcorn!
"Too many to fight? Pch, so there were what? Three of each?" Roger asked teasingly. Hiroyo rolled her eyes and shoved him gently because that really wasn't as funny as he thought it was!
"Not everyone's into picking fights they can't win. Besides this sounds like a spy movie, those are more about being sneaky."
"Pch, sneaky. I'd just crawl up the wall and go across the ceiling." Hiroyo's eyes were starting to get tired from all the roling they were doing.
"Not everyone has cheaty sticky feet." She grumbled before gesturing for the two to continue talking. Roger snickered, clearly amused by sometime but he too turned his attention back to Shoutmon and Adrian.
"Stegomon...I have not seen many of them." Morgan said thoughtfully as he rubbed the bottom of his beak. He could picture the digimon in question but he had no idea of their capabilities. Somehow they had run into more guilmon so he had a pretty good inkling what moves they would have brought against the group. "Still, with two humans and two Digimon using stealth would not be easy. How did you manage?"

Adrian crossed his arms and semi-glared at Roger after the Kunemon made his statement. "It was one Digimon who could actually fight versus four wild Digimon, one of whom was very, VERY big."
"Plus they have good hearing. The Bearmon's tummy growled and the Digimon seemed to be able to hear it. Thankfully they didn't find us, but they easily could have."
Both Adrian and Shoutmon glared at Roger when he claimed that he would've just walked on the ceiling around them. "Did that really sound like an option for us?"
They were eager to know how they snuck past this situation, since it seemed very risky. Adrian was glad to indulge. "I'm honestly surprised that I came up with a plan. I have a bait program installed on my Digivice, so I essentially used that along with throwing a Yen coin right at it. While they were distracted, we could easily move right into the cafeteria."
Shoutmon then sweatdropped. "We COULD have, but there were some... well, problems with that."

"I didn't say it was an option for you, I just said what I'd do." Roger snarked. Still he settled down when they mentioned how they attracted the Digimon's attention to the bait. He nodded approvingly. "Now that's clever! Here I was expecting to hear you'd just attempted to skulk about."
"Now who is making assumptions?" Morgan asked quietly. He was clearly amused, one eyebrow lifted up higher. Roger opened his beak to compmlain then shut it, his stripes narrowing at his brother. "I believe the lesson here is that most things are not meant as slights and should not be taken as such, although your tone can make this a difficult practice."
"Anyways..." Hiroyo said, her tone indicating that this line of speaking was over. Roger shut his beak with a 'click' and was quiet while she and Morgan spoke. "I have to say that's clever to throw out food and then attract their attention to it! I mean, a distraction doesn't work unless they're looking at it. I probably would've come up with doing something more straightforward, like having someone run around and distract them?"
She looked to her side where Morgan thought for a moment and nodded his agreement. "I will admit, that idea is a kind of clever I would not have come up with my own. It is a much safer plan, although I could see merit to having a person running around and physically leading them from place to place as well."
"As long as you don't run into the rest of your group." Roger pointed out. His tone was noticeably less dismissive, he had evidentally taken his brother's advice to heart and was attempting to make it clearly that he wasn't trying to be obnoxious. "Although you could do it on purpose and make it an ambush! It'd be tricky to pull off."
The Fanbeemon nodded approvingly, his eyes joyful. He was about to speak again but started speaking at the same time as Hiroyo. They both stopped and looked at each other then Morgan gestured for her to continue. She flashed him one of her sunny smiles and continued.
"You guys mentioned problems? Was it with whatever they were guarding or something else?" She asked, leaning over the table a little toward Shoutmon and Adrian. "Or did you like, find some civilians that wandered in?"
"Aren't you also a civilian?"
"Yeah but like, non-Digital World know-er? I don't think there's really a word for that."
"Ah, yeah."

"Well you weren't there, were ya?" Shoutmon asked with a very slight aggressive tone. "And what if you were with others that couldn't climb onto the ceiling, hm?"
"Alright, alright, maybe calm down a bit there, Shoutmon. Don't wanna start any fights..."
At least Roger approved of Adrian's plan, saying he was just expecting them to "skulk about". Then it seemed like Roger and Morgan were about to fight before Hiroyo managed to butt in and make sure that didn't happen. She complimented Adrian, saying how his plan was pretty clever. Adrian rubbed the back of his head. "Heh, it wasn't that clever..."
"Come on Adri, give yourself some credit! Who else would've thought to use the bait program like that, huh?"
"Yet I still can't spot tiny details in things without someone having to bring it up first..."
After an all too relate-able moment with Hiroyo and Morgan attempting to speak first, Hiroyo asked about the problems that Shoutmon had mentioned earlier. "Well we were so close to the door when the Bearmon that was with us slipped and fell. The other human with us ran to go save him but at that point one of the Guilmons heard the thud already. So he and the Bearmon were practically stuck behind a hiding place and were about to be discovered."

The breeze picked up again and carried with it faint snatches of scents that it brought to Morgan like a cat showing off what it had caught. He gently brushed it away as he paid attention to Adrian and Shoutmon's story.
He could sympathize with his brother. It was easy when hearing a story like this to imagine what he would have done in their places. What choices he would have made, which actions he would have taken or not. He understood though that while doing so was a valuable and excellent thought experiment time for doing so was not when the story was being told.
And it was especially not the time for saying what he would have done.
He twitched a subled but nuanced message with his antenna to his brother and was rewarded with the faint grinding of beak and an affirmative flip of the Kunemon's own antenna.
He felt Hiroyo wince beside him as Shoutmon described the Bearmon tripping. He heard her suck in her breath with a hiss of empathy for the moment.
"That's awful." She said and he privately agreed. Such unfortnate circumstances. With luck the fact that the museum was frequented so often by so many humans would maybe have to helped obscure the human's scent from the Guilmon but the Bearmon... "What'd you do? It was just one but they were all nearby, right? So it'd be difficult to fight unless you were really fast, or quiet..."

It was now that Adrian was starting to pick up on how strong the wind was. Was there a storm coming by? The sky wasn't covered with many clouds, and the clouds that were there were white and fluffy. The group better be sure to keep their stuff from blowing away somehow...
Adrian smiled at the fact that he was getting along with two bug Digimon. Before he met Shoutmon, Adrian did NOT like bugs at all, especially bees. He paused his story at a hopefully appropriate time to share these thoughts. "You know, I'm honestly surprised that I'm talking to a couple of insect-type Digimon right now, and having a good time doing so. I used to not like bugs, bees in particular since I'm allergic to them."
"Allergic? What does that mean?"
"It means very bad things happen if a human world bee stings me. I'm unable to breathe and I get this weird rash all over me. Humans can be allergic to a bunch of different things, like dogs, cats, peanuts... the list goes on."
Going back to the story... "Basically I tried the same trick again to try and get the Guilmon to look away. I thought it wasn't gonna work but then again, you can't underestimate the will that Digimon have to their stomachs... I'm sure your Digimon have had incidents where their appetites guided them, right?"
"We actually did manage to get to the kitchen, where we actually found a HUGE stash of DigiNoir! We started digging in, but then we started hearing this weird growling noise that just got louder and louder... before we knew it, the Stegomon we tried to hide from busted in, along with his dino-goons!"

Roger opened his beak during the allergic conversation then shut it again. He had heard of allergies before and added 'rash' to the list of things it(they?) could cause.
He was far more interested in the story though.
"Hah! He either wasn't with the other group when you did it before or was just really hungry." Roger crowed. He swayed side-to-side on Hiroyo's shoulder as the two continued their tail, his face-stripes constricting as he imagined the scene in his head. Sneaking through a museum in the human world, trying to avoid a horde of digimon while stuck on the ground really didn't sound like an easy time! Still Adrian had a point.
"Sometimes something just smells too good to resist! Or when your stomach starts gurgling and you just want it to stop." He said with a definitative nod. Morgan didn't respond, he had his head on one claw as he listened to the story and Roger could almost see the wheels turning. He was thinking about something alright!
And then Adrian and Shoutmon dropped the most surprising twist of the story so far.
"DigiNoir? In the human world? WHAT?" Roger croaked, his shock stealing his voice and strangling it in his throat. He turned his head away from the table and coughed into the air before turning back, clearing his throat normally. "Man, I know Stegomon's a Champion but for a load of DigiNoir that's I fight I'd try to take!"
"Over food?" Hiroyo asked. She had an eyebrow raised and Roger could just feel the disbelieving look she was leveling his way. He snorted and opened his beak then shut it again as Morgan answered in his stead.
"While I would not take that fight," Roger tossed his head at the pointed look Morgan through his way because the Fanbeemon would almost never take a risk like that unless he was forced to. Roger couldn't understand it. What better time to push your limits then when you lost nothing of real value by retreating? Better then finding out you sucked when someone's life was on the line! Morgan continued to talk and Roger paid begrudging attention. "DigiNoir is rather sought after as it is quite delicious."
Hiroyo had turned her head to look at him and nodded as if in understanding. Then she paused and Roger just knew she had realized she hadn't understood something fundamental and only now was she realizing that. It would be so much better if she just asked everything upfront.
He took a deep breath and reminded himself that she didn't have the wide range nor long-time experience of the digital world that some other humans did. It was only natural for her to ask questions. Still it left him almost falling off the bench.
"What's DigiNoir? I get it's food but like, what kind of food?"

Shoutmon laughed when Roger tried to rationalize a Digimon's naturally big appetite, saying some things smell so good you couldn't resist, or when your stomach is growling and want it to stop. "You mean like yours was earlier?" Shoutmon said, referring to the second part.
Adrian was confused when Roger had asked about DigiNoir in the human world. "No no no, we weren't in the human world at that point, not exactly. We were in something known as a Digital Shift, an area where both worlds collide. It sort of acts like a gateway between worlds, and the one we entered wasn't the only one."
Adrian sweatdropped when Roger exclaimed that he'd fight a STEGOMON just for a big stash of DigiNoir. "Hell yeah, Roger!" Shoutmon agreed with him, which made Adrian look at his own partner in a state of anime-like shock.
"Over food?" Adrian would say at the same time as Hiroyo. Finally, his years of training had paid off... "JINX!"
Thankfully Morgan was the more sensical twin, and he said he would not take that fight even though he exclaimed that DigiNoir was delicious. Hiroyo asked what DigiNoir was, and Shoutmon looked so surprised by this that he practically turned white, almost like looking at a sketch of Shoutmon on white paper. "You've never had DigiNoir?!?! It's the best food that grows on trees! They're like these cans that grow on trees, like I just said, and inside are a bunch of tasty morsels that do a great job as a meal alone!"
"They kinda taste like honey," Adrian added, "and it's pretty plentiful too! Surprised you haven't heard of them, they're pretty popular."
Suddenly a gust of wind would pick up, blowing most of the napkins and paper plates right off of the table and just generally making a mess. But if Hiroyo wasn't careful, her hat might go flying off too...

"Hah! You look like a ghost!" Roger laughed at Shoutmon's shock. What an excellent expression! Totally understandable considering what Hiroyo had said.
"Cans?" She asked, looking from Shoutmon to Adrian with an eyebrow raised as if silently asking the tamer if the 'mon was pulling her leg. She shook her head and sighed. "I guess maybe I did hear about it before I just didn't realize what it was? I was expecting..I don't know, a mushroom or some kinda fruit or something...Hey!"
The wind picked up then and she yelped as something small and gritty got swept into her eye. Her hands shifted to shield her face as her face jerked back and with the change of position she felt the wind catch the brim of her wide, white sunhat and lift it off her head.
"My hat! Morgan, Roger, can you get it?" She asked as she attempted to wipe the sand out of her eyes.
"Got it!" Roger lunged up and out and overbalanced, his momentum carrying him right off his seat at the table to land on the ground with an 'oof'. Morgan sighed and took to the air. The gust caught him off balance at first but he was quick to right himself. He was not quick to chase after the hat - as long as he could see it he could retrieve it after all.
...Until it flew over toward another table where a Thunderballmon was disagreeing with a MamemonX. Violently disagreeing. The hat drifted into the middle of the two just as a fiery fist got thrown and Hrioyo managed to clear her eyes - just in time to see the hat collide with fist and get sent spiralling away again with a hole punched straight through the middle and the edges on fire.
"No! Not another one!" Tears were beginning to well up in her eyes and she let out a frustrated growl as she gestured angrily. "That's...the fourth one I've lost since I came to this world! What does it have against hats!"
"I think you're just really unlucky. Also: ow." Roger reported from the ground where he was still laying on his back. Morgan trailled the displaced article of clothing, he waited cautiously for the flames to die down before he snagged it with his claw and brought it back to the table.

"Well how would you respond if someone said they had never heard of DigiNoir before, huh? And it's on you two for not telling her about the most delicious fruit sent from Yggdrasil himself!" Shoutmon said, seemingly getting slightly louder as his sentence went on.
"DigiNoir is good, but you're taking it too far, dude," Adrian said with a slight smile. "And really, the whole can part surprises you, Hiroyo? We're talking about food that grows in the same world that houses dragons and monsters, as well as literal puddles of slime with eyes. Being surprised just wastes energy, y'know?"
Suddenly the wind picked up and it took Hiroyo's hat with it. Roger attempted to go get it, but he ended up falling right onto the ground. Adrian got out of his seat to run after it, but that's when an angry MamemonX punched a hole right through it, destroying the hat. "Oh no..."
Hiroyo started bawling about it, claiming that it the fourth hat that had been destroyed since she came to the Digital World. "Wait... that was your fourth hat? What happened to the other three?"
"That really sucks, Hiroyo... Maybe I can lend you some money to buy a new hat? Along with some tape to keep it on?"

"I'll tell you what happened!" Roger called from the ground. He curled and uncurled a couple of times until with a mightly toss of his tail he managed to fling himself upright. Why he didn't just roll over instead of expending so much extra energy was anyone's guess but he seemed pretty pleased with himself. "There was the one on the beach that one time that got smashed by Gesomon completely unintentionally, there was the recent incident in the Server Woods with the mud! It must have fallen in or something, it was coated from what Hiroyo said, so she had to leave it behind. As for the third..."
The Kunemon paused and abruptly drew back. He looked confused, as would anyone who suddenly discovered they couldn't remember how or when something happened. It wasn't as bad as not remembering a birthday or something but the times when Hiroyo lost a hat did tend to be eventful. "I don't remember. Morgan why don't I remember?"
The question directed at the Fanbeemon came while he was carefully brushed away the charred pieces clinging around the hole in the middle. He looked up from his task and hummed thoughtfully for a moment, his expression peaceful as he opened his beak.
"..." He shut it after a moment and blinked rapidly before his eyes narrowed with a mixture of displeasure and suspicion. "I cannot recall. Either we did not care enough to mark its' passing or something strange is going on."
"Or Hiroyo lost track and miscounted." Roger offered.
The human in question wiped her tears away with her thumb and then took a deep breath before giving Adrian a smile. "Sorry, it's just really, really frustrating! I remember all the times I wore that hat when I bought it, so there were a lot of memories of being with friends and stuff you know?"
She sighed and shook her head which sent strands of her hair flying around, several landed directly in her face and she huffed in annoyanced before she tucked them behind her ear. She was determined to compose herself! After all, if it being surprised by cans growing from trees wasn't worth spending energy on, then losing a hat certainly wasn't either. "Maybe I should consider tape. Or a hat band or something. As for the third hat I lost..."
She trailled off as she tapped a finger on her chiin. She sniffed loudly, once, before giving a more careful shake of her head. "Sorry! Maybe we're getting hit with a moment of group forgetfulness? I'm sure we'll recall later!"

Shoutmon was taken aback when Hiroyo said it was the fourth hat that got destroyed ever since she came to the Digital World. Of course the red dragon asked what happened to the other three, which Roger was more than eager to explain. One hat got smashed by a Gesomon, another was coated in something gross which made Hiroyo leave it behind, and the third...
Well, none of them could remember what happened to the third hat. Adrian and Shoutmon looked at each other and shrugged, the former walking up to Hiroyo. "Yeah, hats aren't cheap. It really does suck when something you own gets completely destroyed."
"Why are we not going off and fighting those jerks yet then?" Shoutmon asked.
"Because we don't want to make this situation even worse than it already is, Shoutmon. I can buy you a new hat if you want, Hiroyo."
Hopefully after Hiroyo had calmed down, Shoutmon turned over to Roger with a smirk. "Judging by your reactions to the story, you seem to like fighting. There's open space over by the beach, wanna have a quick spar?"

Adrian's words were kind and she firmly wiped away the last frustrated tears away from her eyes. She couldn't let her mood ruin the day! Even if she was upset she couldn't allow herself to bring everybody down into the funk with her. "Thank you for the offer! I might take you up on it sometime!" She winked to show she was kidding and then put her hands behind her back and laced her fingers together. "Although, that'd be pretty unfair since you weren't the one who destroyed it."
At the mention of the group that destroyed her hat she looked over to see that they were still arguing amongst themselves. Apparently they hadn't even noticed the hat getting in the way!
"They would probably just push the blame back onto us." Morgan remarked, his tone gentle. He didn't understand why Hiroyo was so attached to her hats but that didn't mean he couldn't respect how upset she was feeling right now. "While we could potentionally overpower them is that really what you want to do?"
The woman contemplated this quietly for a moment before shaking her head. She knew how strong Morgan and Roger were, and she had the feeling Shoutmon and Adrian were pretty strong too! But it was a big group and picking a fight over this would be like punching someone who accidentally bumped into you on the street, wouldn't it? "No, it's not worth someone getting hurt over an accident."
The Fanbeemon nodded his head, pleased. She was, he thought to himself, more sensible then he tended to give her credit for. More sensible then his brother at any rate.
"Well I wanna fight! And if I can't fight them then I think sparring with you will be the perfect way to blow off steam!" Roger piped up. The Kunemon had crawled his way back onto his seat and now he leered at Shoutmon. He was looking forward to seeing what the red dragon could do! "Its good to meet soemone who can appreciate a good ol' brawl!"

Wow, Adrian was impressed by Hiroyo's ability to put on a happy face even though she was clearly upset. Adrian knew how to hide his emotions relatively well, but if he started crying then he doubted that he would even be able to hide it.
Looking back at the group who destroyed Hiroyo's hat, it turned out that they didn't even notice that they destroyed it in the first place. The two Digimon were still just arguing back and forth at each other. That was admittedly very irritating, but Morgan brought up a could point, they could just push the blame onto us. "Yeah, because it's our fault the wind suddenly picked up and took the hat."
Eventually it was decided that it would be best to not try to pick a fight with them over the subject. Shoutmon scoffed, but he did understand why that was the right thing to do... still, he couldn't accept the fact that those two jerks were just gonna get away with it.
Good thing Roger accepted Shoutmon's spar challenge, so that they could both blow off some steam. Although Shoutmon did take a good look at his surroundings. "Um, how about we go to a less crowded place? I'd rather not destroy this 'mon's hot dog cart, you know?"
"Shoutmon has a point... it is fall right now, maybe the beach is empty? What do you guys think?"

"I am not saying it would be right of them to do so, nor that they would be correct. " Morgan stressed his point. He wanted to be absolutely certain that everyone in their little group knew he didn't think they were responsible for the hat, merely that he was passing a prediction about how the more beligerent group would react. He subsided when Hiroyo pat him on the shoulder, a gentle ecouragement that he didn't have to worry about his meaning not coming through.
"Beach? Sure! I've got a natural advantage there." Roger boasted as he lifted his upper body and wiggled his feet. "Caterpillars treads have great traction on sand!"
"That refers to tank tracks, not actual caterpillar feet." His brother pointed out, his antenna twitched with amusement when his brother responded by sticking his tongue out.
"Maybe you should toss that now? No sense keeping it now, right?" Hiroyo gestured vaguely in the direction of the hat Morgan still held and he looked down at it and nodded. It was far beyond salvation.
"Hurry up! Once we hit the beach we can have a good time!" Roger called as he very speedily crawled his way to Hiroyo's feet and immediately started to scale her legs. She wobbled at first then set herself more firmly and frowned at him.
"Yeesh worm-boy, give me a warning. It wouldn't be a very fun day if I fell." She good-naturedly grumbled before smooshing a finger into his cheek. With her slowest moving partner mounted up she started determinedly toward one of the exits out of the courtyard. She paused half-way across to look back and watch as Morgan tossed the remains of her hat in the trash, her smile slipped into something a little sadder. "Good work Morgan."
"It feels unfitting, although it is expedient." The Fanbeemon admitted as he rejoined the group and Hiroyo resumed walking. The red head shrugged, her smile still tinged with sad as she looked over to Adrian and Shoutmon.
"So, how far away are we going to have to stand? Big flashy moves just seem like they would fit Shoutmon."
