The two girls let themselves into the office, closing the door behind them with a light thud. A tiny room lay before them – a weather beaten sofa and a side-table with an ancient lamp perched upon it filled a majority of this room. The only other piece of furniture was a desk – seemingly abandoned. Akko looked to Sóley for help and guidance. “Do you think we have the wrong place?”
The blue-haired girl shook her head silently, sighing ever so slightly. “It was written on the door. DDA. Why would more than one company would use the same initials for their business in a single office building.”
Akko tilted her head a little and considered the thought. “Well, maybe it stands for something else. Like Dungeons and Dragon’s”
“That would be DAD.” Sóley muttered, approaching the desk. “Oh right!” As Sóley did so, a side door flew open and slammed into the wall behind it with a mighty thwack! From behind it – another girl danced her way, backward. Quite unaware of Sóley and Akko’s appearance, thanks to the headphones stuck to her head. A shrill singsong of J-Pop joined this little performance – her raspberry-colored twin-tailed hair slapping around like whips. It wasn’t until the song was quite over that she caught sight of Akko and then the much shorter, Sóley. “Oh I’m sorry!!~ You lookin’ for the director lady? She’s through there-” The girl pointed a pink nailed finger at another door on the right of the one that had slammed against the wall. “The director must be expecting you. I’d check but I have noooo idea where my clipboard is. Oh well, right?” Without saying another word, the girl sat down and put her feet up on the desk and returned the music to full volume.
Sóley really wanted to say something about how a job isn’t to be treated in such a manner. Not that it would have been heard over the blaring music. Sighing again, Sóley led them beyond the door that had been pointed out to the pair. Akko whistling merrily, moving her arms from side-to-side with a warming glee.
The room beyond this was longer than wide, ending with a wall of glass panes allowing the office’s occupants to look down upon the city streets below. Three desks had been erected in a triangular fashion but only one appeared to be in use. Stacks of heavy-looking, hardback books, and loose paper littered the wooden surface.
“Good afternoon, Diana!” Akko yelled – waving her arm wildly at seemingly no-one in particular. It wasn’t until the smaller girl approached that she caught sight of the blond hair women sat behind the grand disorder of paper. The women looked back, the sharp eyes taking in the pair with silent grandeur. Sóley jumped and then bowed her head – visually sweating as she did so. “Good afternoon, Director.” Putting heavy emphasis on the “Director”, whilst glaring daggers at Akko.
“Now, now, ladies. No need for such formalities,” the blond-haired lady said, smiling down upon her two newest employees. “We’re a family here, after all.” She opened her arms out as if to hug the pair but instead turned to face the window. “Welcome. Welcome to your new lives and most importantly, your new family. This is DDA.”
Akko seemed to want to interrupt but Sóley stepped down on her foot, allowing the director to continue. “This is DDA, a detective agency whose main goal to provide assistance, to guide and to solve the problems of our many clients who you will be meeting shortly, I am quite sure.”
“Now please,” Diana said, turning back to face them. “Make yourself at home. Set up your desks and I’ll go and make us some coffee and perhaps some snacks? Does that sound agreeable to you?”
Akko nodded immediately, the very moment as the word ‘snack’ was spoken. “Of course! That sounds great.” Akko sat down at the nearest desk and opened her bag. From within, she pulled out a laptop in lime green. Sóley did the same, except she did so staring at the director with interest. “What’s wrong, young Sóley. Is something not to your high standards?” Diana asked, wrapped a long-nailed hand around the girl's shoulder. “No… It’s fine. Thank you, Director.”
Sóley spent several minutes, laying out her desk perfectly. The aqua blue laptop centered. A notepad to the left, with pen and pencil laid next to it. Spare pencils placed into a pot, on the corner of the desk, just in case. Akko’s desk seemed to be already far less manageable. A jumble of sweet wrappers already littered the wooden top and no organization could be seen. “I wonder when Diana will be back? I’m parched!” Akko muttered, looking up. Her words slightly muffed from the number of sweets crammed within it. Sóley merely let out a hum of interest but didn’t reply.
After a few minutes, the pink-haired girl stuck her head around the door. The music still blaring from the headphones which lay around her neck now. “The director lady told me to tell you – that – hmm – what did she say again. Oh, right!” Sóley felt a vein in her forehead expand slightly but chose to not say anything. “The director lady said she had to step out for some business, unavoidable stuff! I dunno. Anywho, she said to set your laptop up and connect ‘em to the internet, so you’re all ready for work when she gets back, okay doke?” With that said, she pulled her head back and the door snapped shut.
“Sounds fair and easy enough,” Sóley said, looking down at what appeared to be a long LAN cable which reached from the wall behind the desk and snaked around and onto it. “Ah, right. This must be it.” Sóley picked up the wire and inserted it into the relevant slot. “Hey! Hey, show me! Show me too.” Akko stormed over, stomping her feet like an excitable rhinoceros. “Fine, fine. It’s this wire. It goes in this slot. Like so. Got it?” As she pressed it in, something extraordinary happened. No longer was this a simple Slice of Life day. Now it was something more like a far-out sci-fi!
Without a single button press; the laptop lit up as bright as a beacon on a lighthouse. Filling the room with a shimmering blue glow, that faded in and out – almost hypnotically. Between the beams of lights, visualized numbers seemed to burst out and dance around the room. Just random numbers in mid-air, moving from one side of the room to the other, bouncing of one another. And then… both girls felt the exact same feeling. It was like that dream where you feel like you’re falling, falling, falling... Falling without a parachute into the unknown.
Akko opened her eyes, which she had chosen to shut as soon as the falling feeling had set in. After all – she wasn’t a great fan of roller-coaster rides. Her face looked as green as her hair. But whatever she had landed on was nice and soft. It had most fortunately cushioned her landing.
At least it was until a muffled moan escaped from beneath her. “Um, excuse me, Akko. But, GET OFF!!”
The blue-haired girl shook her head silently, sighing ever so slightly. “It was written on the door. DDA. Why would more than one company would use the same initials for their business in a single office building.”
