Duffer sat in the trailmon as it came through the tunnel back to the human world. He looked out on the Digital World's surreal beauty and pondered, albeit briefly, if he was doing the right thing. "We can go back you know." Kotemon said, almost as if reading his mind. "We don't need to go back to humanity. You can stay here, we've got a home and a bunch of friends..." "But I miss home Kotemon. I miss my parents and my brother and my school and... not having to worry about eating fiber optic wires or accidentally poisoning myself because I forgot to cook an apple."
"But they won't believe us, where you've been, who I am. You've grown too big to be seen as your old self anymore." Kotemon was right, Duffer had grown. He was taller and more slender now, his hair was longer and his skin had been darkened by the Digital World sun.
"Kotemon, you're my best friend. I love you like a brother, and you've given me so much... but I'm a human. You're a digimon. We have different needs and wants and feelings. I need to get back to America, at least for a little bit. See Minnesota again, talk to my family, show the world I'm not dead."
"We're talking in circles! They'd never let me in a plane, I don't know what'll happen if we stray too far apart, and you've never learned anything about the human world!"

Ron was riding on a different train, this one from the 104 area. He was checking out the shops for whenever he had to go there, he was in his green striped shirt and, brown shorts, and his backpack was in a seat next to him. Now he's heading on back to the station to figure out what else to do that day. "I don't get why your choosing to be here, when you could be back in the digital world finding the rest of me."
The voice in his head has, from time to time, piped up about making plans to go back into the digital world the whole time he was out. Ron has shot it down every time. "I keep telling you, I am not going in there until I'm good and ready. That MetalTyrannomon made me realize that I just can't jump in willy-nilly."
The train stops at the station, the intercom giving everyone the usual spiel, signalling Ron to get off, he grabs his backpack and walks off the train. "As soon as I plan a day for it, then we'll take the train I heard about, no portals." The spirit starts to complain. "But I like the portals, they feel nice."
Ron rolled his eyes. "I said no, I need to get better first, now be quiet, I gotta figure out where this train station to the digital world is." The spirit reluctantly obeyed, staying quiet as Ron looked around. When he noticed a strange part of the station, Ron headed towards it.
At the door, he saw there was an odd scanner next to it, and it had no handle to open it. "Hmm, this might be it, but it could just be some gate to some old set of tracks they never got rid of, how do you open this thing again?"

Behind the door he'd hear, if he focused hard enough, a running elevator leading down to a lower platform. On the lower platform a few trailmon would be running out of the station to their Digital destinations or in to their analog arrivals. As the train came to a halt several digimon and people stepped out to be checked into the human world. Some would be turned away while others, like Duffer and Kotemon, would be let through with little issue... even as they continued to debate with one-another.
"First, we get some actual human food again. Digital World-style pizza and pasta just can't compete to real meals." Duffer said, approaching the elevator and using his Digivice to open it. "That's just nostalgia talking." Kotemon shook his head. "We-" "I'm not going back. I'm going home. You're coming with me, and nobody will take you away." "The digital world is our home!" "Oh yes, that tiny apartment we can barely afford, the constant threat of being caught in endless battles and crossfire, the vague intimidation of a nonsensical god creature controlling us and our surroundings-" "Duffer!" Kotemon was about to strike him, but the boy caught the mon's training sword. "Duffer..." "I know you're scared." There was silence as the boy stepped in. "But I'm an adult now. I can make my own decisions." The digimon was silent... and followed him into the lift. "I can make something up. I can say I never knew anything from the past five years. People do that all the time. Now come on, let's get some lunch."
He hit the button and they soon, as fate would find it, would be riding up to the very door Ron was standing at.

Ron looked at the scanner deciding to try a few things out. First he takes his phone and places it next to the scanner, but it doesn't work. "Hmm well that didn't work, let's try this then." He goes to his app menu, and uses the one shaped like a digivice, this then makes it morph into his digivice. After that, he tries placing it on the scanner again, this time it gets a reaction, opening the door.
"Awesome, so it only reacts to the digivice form, and my phone doesn't count." "Does this mean the two are mutually exclusive, and that app just temporally turns the phone into a digivice?" Ron shrugs as he walks through the door, it closes as he gets far enough away. "Don't know, but whatever, we know what to do. "His spirit sighs "You really aren't excited about this stuff, huh?"
Ron shook his head. "No, that's not it, I just want to relax until I have to go back to school, when that begins I won't have much time for this." He hears his spirit get annoyed. "Which is why we need to spend as much time as we can looking for my other forms!" Ron gets annoyed himself, stopping in front of some elevator door. "Oh, and what are we to do about food, money, places to stay?!" he thought in his head. "I... well I didn't think that far ahead." Ron rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I thought so. Look, I know how it feels wanting to get somewhere, but we can't rush into this without proper prep.As soon as we have what we need, I promise to go as soon as possible."
His spirit finally agrees, and Ron looks at the elevator. " Looks like someone's heading up, guess I'll ask them what's below here before heading back." He thinks, standing to the side so he isn't in the way.

The older boy stepped out of the lift, taking a deep breath of (somewhat) fresh (air-condition-filtered) air as his friend, who to the untrained eye, looked like a toddler or a midget dressed in a kendo uniform followed behind. Duffer gave a passing glance at the kid before continuing on.
"So how do you plan on doing it then? They won't take bits at the airport." "Step 1; we get jobs, Step 2; we go home." "Oh you've REALLY thought this through." "I could meet up with the family, or call the folks back in the states." "Hey it's your dead son, can you loan me a few thousand for some plane tickets home?" Kotemon responded sarcastically. "Well what ideas do you have?" Duffer stopped and looked down at his partner. "Return to the digital world, go back to our apartment, and actually think about this instead of- are you even listening to me?" Kotemon said, noticing Duffer's attention had shifted to the kid they passed. "Not really... Hey kid. What're you doing there?" He approached Ron, looking him over. "You uh... you ain't from around here, are you?" He asked, immediately noticing the boy's more American appearance. "You're in good company then."

Ron wasn't prepared for this argument when they got off, he was unsure as to when he should ask about the elevator, but thankfully one of them started talking to him, although it took a moment for him to answer back. "...Uh, yeah, I'm new here, moved from the states a few days ago, it's nice to meet someone who also used to live there. This goes to the digital world, right? I came by here so I would know for future reference."
"Yeah, how far into the future we talking here?" His spirit asked him. "Shut it!" Ron told him in his head, focusing back on his conversation with the two in front of him. "So, you two lived in the digital world? You don't look like digimon, are you spirit wielders?" He asked, oblivious to the fact that Kotemon was a digimon.
"And wait, your parents live over in the states, but think your dead? How long have you been in there? ...Ah, sorry if that's not something you wanna talk about to someone you just met, you don't need to answer that one!" He said, feeling stupid about asking that question.

The young adult frowned. "Oh, you heard all that, huh?" he hummed and thinks about how to answer for a few moments, looking to make sure normal people weren't looking their direction. "Yeah, we've lived in the digital world for at least 2, 3 years. There's a couple ways to go in and out but I'd definitely recommend the subway down there." "You're looking at a digimon, boy." The mon lifted up his oversized sleeve to reveal a purple, reptilian claw before sliding it back down. "My name is Kotemon, and this is my apprentice, Duffer." "I'm your tamer, not apprentice. All you-" He cut himself off and turned to the kid. "Obviously, Kotemon looks and sounds like a child in a costume, so we don't need to worry about hiding him all that much. Just some longer pants and nobody notices. There's a few types of Digidestined out there, so keep an open mind about it. But down that elevator is the Digital World, a strange, mysterious location that-"
"That I would gladly show you around, should you feel like it." Kotemon's piercing red eyes stared into Ron, heavily implying the boy should definitely follow it... or else. "They have agents down there for stuff like that Kotemon, come on." Duffer interjected. "We surely can't leave this kid to wander a dangerous world like that alone, can we?" the mon fired back.

He's glad they didn't seem bothered by his question, and is very surprised by the fact that Kotemon was a digimon. "Huh, never would have guessed, although I guess he does have those horns, and you can't really see what's behind that mask, must be easy to disguise that one." "I'm just surprised they stayed in the digital world for as long as they did, a human living there for that long must be a strong one." Ron agrees with his spirit on that one.
Ron thought about Kotemon's offer, nodding. "Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. But really, I'm not ready to go there yet, I'm still settling into Shibuya, after that I'll try the trains out." He was gonna ask them about where they where heading, when something that Duffer said made him think. "So what did you mean by agents, is something going on?" He asked. "Maybe some people are investigating why there's an unmarked station that a bunch of people are going in and out of?" His spirit joked

Duffer paused to think how to explain this. "Well, you know how back home there's the TSA when you get on and off airplanes? Well here there's a kinda government thingy called DATS that makes sure people and digimon coming and going are legit. Except they're not really as annoying, all you gotta do is show 'em one of these and they'll leave you alone." Duffer took out his digivice for the first time in a long, long while. "This thing'll also let you into the boarding platform." He motioned to the scanner next to the elevator.
Kotemon looked annoyed by the boy's choice, but decided not to pursue it whilst Duffer was feeling so confident about himself. "So, you're a spirit wielder then? Voice in your head nagging you endlessly?" "I know that feeling all too much." Duffer interjected. "At least you're the only one who can hear it." "Not necessarily... you could give it some control should push come to shove." "...You can? Why would you though?" "Why not let a more experienced figure take control, so to speak? Digimon have been around hundreds of years longer than you. Their experiences and ideas are more educated than yours." "Kotemon, you told me the Digital World was founded in the 60's by a bunch of bored college students inventing the internet." "It was hundreds of years for the Digital World."

" Oh is that all they do? That wont be a problem since I have this." He holds up his blue and yellow digivice, he didn't change it back yet, and puts it back in his pocket. " Anyway yeah, I'm a spirit wielder, a very new one if you couldn't tell already. As for the nagging, he wasn't really doing that to me until today." "Go to the digital world and that'll stop." his spirit said. "I'm ignoring you." Ron thought "Better be careful, otherwise I'll take control like that Kotemon said." "Oh that won't happen." Ron told his sprite. "And how do you know that?" his spirit asked. "Because, I don't get the feeling you'd do that without permission, you're vocal about your objections to staying here, sure, but in the end you're patent enough to wait for when I'm ready." His spirit didn't say anything after a moment, shocked by Ron's comment "That's a lot of trust you have for me Ron, thank y-" "Wait hold on, what the heck did they just say?"
Ron had to interrupt his spirit, when he heard the other two talk about when the digital world was created. "Wait, did you say hundreds of years, how does that work if it was made in the 60's?!" Ron exclaimed.

"Yeah Kotemon, tell us how hundreds of years could pass in only 30 human years." Duffer said, glad to put his know-it-all companion on the spot for once. "Well, first we have to discuss Alternate Universes." Kotemon said, attempting to save whatever face was under her helmet. "A computer is a... the internet is kinda like... the digital world an-" Duffer snickered as Kotemon struggled to find the words.
Kotemon cleared his throat. "Let's start over. Imagine 2 clocks. One clock runs normally while the other one runs faster. Because the second clock is its own time-keeping device it only knows its time, not the other one. For 20 to 30 years the Digital World's time was accelerated greatly, because it ran relative to the speed of the computers it was based in. Until the branching of the human world to the digital world in the 90's, our two universes were in vastly different times. Once first contact arrived time slowed to adjust to your universe... or perhaps it sped up to match ours, who knows." "That sounds like an improv based on Galaxy Quest binging, Kotemon." The boy finally said. "I never claimed to be an expert on that specific field, boy." "Yeah, just everything else." The man whispered to the kid.
"Then you explain the hundreds of years of history, culture, geography, and architecture in the Digital World." "It's fake, like a video game. Designed to make the Digital World look as real as it can until it actually was." Kotemon immediately retaliated with his Kendo stick, whacking Duffer in his unprotected shin. "So that didn't hurt because I'm just imaginary." Kotemon said, pruning the "thinking therefor I am" philosophy from Duffer's Mental Garden as the man fell to the ground and clutched his leg.

Ron wasn't sure where the Kotemon was going with the first attempt, but started to understand after he tried again, and listened to the explanation in full. "So basically, time used to be really de-synced between the digital and real world, and now they're closer to synced up, but not completely?" He asked, another question soon came into his mind "If that's the case, how much of a time difference is it now? I could use that to help me plan out trips later."
Ron's spirit was fascinated by this. "You know, if this was a long enough de-sync, you could spend a good amount of time in the digital world without worrying about messing any school." His spirit said. "That we can, although first we need to know how long it is, otherwise we could over shoot it by accident." Ron thought, his spirit agreeing with him on that.
Ron chuckled a bit at that imaginary comment the Kotemon made. "You know, this being imaginary would explain a lot about the voice in my head." Ron joked. "That or your going mad, that's a possibility."

Duffer paused to think about the time desync. " I'm not sure how long the desync is, if there is one it's not really big enough to notice from what I can tell..." He double-checked the time on his watch and digivice. " Anyways, it's Monday, right? You better head off to school. Kotemon's already gotten me to drop out, that's no excuse for you." " You dropped out because of the accident." Kotemon said, somberly. "An accident we can fix. I'm sure I can enroll in night school, get a GED, call my parents, and we'll be back in the land of a thousand lakes, enjoying Jimmy Deans and Spam, and cruising the Mall of America!" "I don't think they have night schools in Japan, you'll probably have to change your name or come up with a good story, and stop talking to yourself in an incriminating manner."
"Regardless, it was nice meeting you-" Duffer paused in middle of offering his hand for a shake. "I don't think you gave me your or your digimon's names." The man said, awkwardly. "To be fair we didn't give him your real name either." The mon pointed out. Duffer rolled his eyes. "In that case, a nickname is fine too."

Ron considered his options to figuring out the de-sync time. "Okay, so we should probably ask someone else about how long that time difference is, maybe Shino can tell us?" Ron thought, "Or we could look at the time before entering the digital world next time, then see what time and day it is when we leave." His spirit suggested. "That's one option, but it would have to be on a weekend, I don't want to miss school because I spent too long in the digital world."
Ron shook his head when Duffer told him to go to school, "Actually, my dad hasn't got me enrolled yet, he's still setting that up. I'll probably start sometime this or next week." Ron said, then wondering about this accident they where talking about. "Hmm, this sounds like a personal thing, I shouldn't ask." He thought, then started to say goodbye.
"Yeah it was nice meeting you both as well... Oh crap your right! Sorry about that, I'm Ron, and my partner is Gaomon." He told them, thinking about what to do now. "You know, I should probably head on back home, don't want anyone to think I'm cutting class or anything, I'll see you guys later." He started to walk to the normal trains, turning back to them as he walked. "Hope you can get back to the states to your family." he said, before heading home.

"It's always nice to see another American. We stick out like sore thumbs alone." He smiled and waved as the boy ran off. "Reminds me a bit of you... in that he's a child. He's definitely a lot smarter than you were." "Why do we always fight? Can't we just enjoy being back in the human world just once?" "Alright, alright. You have a 'plan', what's the first step?" "I call my parents over in the states." "What makes you think they'll have the same number and stuff." "I don't, but finding the new ones should be easy! We just go to the library." The boy said, smiling brightly.
Kotemon was going to ask a few things. How was Duffer going to find anything in a Japanese library when he can't write Japanese? Why would a Japanese library have his parent's phone number from any time period, let alone the most recent years? Did this city even have a public library or will he be planning to break into a school? There was all these and more, but for the first time in a long, long while Kotemon was quiet. Perhaps he did have a plan. Perhaps the boy had learned something. She decided to let Duffer take the lead this time, after all, not like he had any better ideas.
