“Today was fun.”
That was the thought that dominated young Mikazuki Nakamura’s mind as his grandmother, Mizuhi Nakamura, continued to read him a colorful copy of The Princess and the Frog. Outside the Boy’s window, the faint glowing light poles of the Odaiba Artificial Island cast their glow among the streets. Sure, being 8 years old meant he might be a bit old for this, but it was mostly so he could enjoy grandma’s company a bit more. After all, Mika loved his family, and since he wasn’t always allowed to come, he just wanted to make the most of it.
“And so, the prince and the princess lived happily ever after. The End.” And with those words, the old lady, dressed in an expensive set of pajamas closed the picture book in her hands and kissed the young boy’s forehead and gently ruffled his blonde hair, earning herself a much-appreciated hum of contentment.
“Thanks, granny!” the boy exclaimed, opening his arms to hug the old lady, to which she acquiesced with gusto.
After the hug, Mika’s grandmother stood up, smiling down at the boy. “Alright, little boy, it’s time for you to sleep! The two of us will have to be at the top of our game for the trip to Cancún, especially if you want to see the break of dawn at the airport.”
The boy nodded enthusiastically. “I’m gonna be able to swim in the sea this time, granny?”
“Of course, dear! What’s a trip to the beach without a swim?”
The response was met with an excited “WOOHOO!” from the boy. His grandmother’s smile brightened even further at that, and she patted the boy on the head. “Now, off to bed, you go. Save some of that energy for tomorrow.”
Mikazuki nodded and immediately plopped back into the bed, trying his best to follow the command he was given as his grandmother left for her own bed.
And though he tried, the Nakamura protegé was not lulled into Morpheus’ comfortable temptation. Though he twisted and turned in bed, trying his best to, the boy was too excited to actually go now. All the possible ways of having fun in Cancún were already flashing through his head and it made falling asleep that much harder.
And thus, Mika decided to try and get something to drink. Maybe some milk ought to help him fall asleep.
Guiding himself through the hallways of the penthouse his grandparents currently lived in wasn’t hard. He had done so multiple times already and it never really bothered him once, but this time, something was… off.
Not only did the hall suddenly seem darker than usual, but there was a chill in the air. He couldn’t get why, of course.
Mika looked around himself, feeling nervous all of a sudden, but nothing weird came out of it.
And yet the feeling of something being off was still there, Persisting as the boy cautiously moved through the hallway, the moonlight scoring through one of the windows being his only guide. it almost felt as he was being… watched.
As much as he thought about Screaming for something, the blonde toddler kept himself shut as he walked.
Unbeknownst to the boy, an undistinguished shade moved from the ceiling.
And as it stalked behind Mika, a faint glow shimmered through the window of the living room as both of them crossed by it, briefly revealing a large curved blade, glimmering in the faint moonlight.
Finally arriving at the fridge, the blonde helped himself to a glass of milk and drank it in haste, sighing in satisfaction as the last drop went down his throat. And it seemed his objective was reached as a loud yawn left his lips. So he closed the appliance and turned back to the hallway-
And then, the glass in his hand dropped. Mikazuki’s eyes widened and his mouth quivered as what gave him such an uneasy feeling soon was revealed in the brief moment the Fridge’s lights illuminated its clear metal door, revealing a horrifying visage behind him.
SOMETHING hidden beneath tattered robes hovered above the boy, glimmering scythe in hand while its flay-like bottom end was held in the other. Three eyes stared at the boy, two amidst the hoods of the robe and another one worn on a necklace around its “neck.”
Upon being seen, the creature wasted no time in raising its weapon and bringing it down upon the boy, who could only stumble back in fear, managing to narrowly avoid the bladed end of it, but not without getting his pants torn by the scythe. Fortunately for the boy, it seemed the blade was stuck on the ground after that.
“Wh-WhaAAAAAAH!” Mika’s plea for answers was interrupted as his stomach was struck by the metal ball on the end of the specter’s scythe, knocking him on the ground in pain as the mysterious being took its scythe off the floor and attempted yet again to strike the boy who had seen it.
As all of this was happening, suddenly a shadow leaped out of the TV and kicked the wraith down from the building. Mika simply stared in panic as the shade closed in on him and revealed its appearance: a human-sized, anthropomorphic purple bunny in a yellow sleeveless jumpsuit, wielding something similar to katars and tonfas and sporting a blue bandanna on its neck. Before the boy was able to speak anything, the creature pressed a fuzzy finger against its mouth, shaking its head and leaping off to where the other one fell. As it did, a white light gathered around its body, making it change shape into an even bigger brown bunny with enormous arms and wearing a mantle and armor that accentuated its lanky form as it plummeted to meet the ground…
only to gravity to suddenly warp around it and its fall to be as soft as a leaf falling into the water.
Seeing its new assailant, the wraith’s blade suddenly charged with energy before its wielder slashed it against the bunny monster, who moved to the side with graceful ease, leaving the attack to simply graze the street and carve a small trench on the very middle of the road.
Mika couldn’t see much, but as he finally calmed down, he could only watch in awe as his savior suddenly seemed to vanish and appear right beside the phantom swatting it against a nearby building before charging at it and kicking it up with practiced ease.
When the ghost-like creature regained its consciousness, the holy beast was upon him yet again, this time brandishing its arm as its hand shapeshifted into an ax and was brought upwards before the phantom had time to react.
And like that, as its pieces fell to the ground, they slowly disintegrated into pixels, vanishing in an instant before even touching the ground.
The large bunny-like monster simply took a look towards the building where Mika was watching and vanished in a flash of light, leaving the boy to ponder what just happened in silence.
“MIKA!” suddenly, Mizuhi’s voice shot out of the room as the elder caught the boy in a fierce hug, holding on to him for dear life. “I heard screaming! Are you alright?!”
“Y-yeah, granny. I am.” the boy sounded uncertain, glancing towards the site where the “battle” took place.
“What happened, dear?” the old lady asked in concern, but all she got was the boy looking out and saying.
“I… I don’t know.”
