It had been a few days since it happened. A chaotic mess of sadness and joy that seemed to just jump out at me in many directions. I had been feeling alone after it all happened. My father's death, my brother withdrawing and my mom withdrawing too-- except for her work. Things were a mess, but then something oddly magical happened. Or so I could only presume it was one.
Today was a rainy day, but it didn't stop my brother from going off to doing whatever he wanted to do on a Sunday. And mom oddly was out, likely picking up another shift at her job or perhaps getting some food for supper. It is nice if I didn't have to cook today.
The only other person here now was my newest companion and friend. I would have considered him a pet... but pets don't wear little shoes, jeans, and vest. Or had magical music powers as well. With the house empty, he was now jumping around and playing music created by his own magic. I was making sure he didn't get into any trouble, but Musimon seemed to behave himself.
After the days to keep him a secret, I decided to do something I had put off for a while. I sat down at my desk I shared with Ryuji and scooted up in the chair. I took out a few pieces of paper, my favorite pen with a plush star on it, and began to write a letter I wanted to for some time.
Dear Dad,
Sorry I haven't written in a while. I know it must be silly, but things been busy as always. I miss you. We all do. Hard to say more than that, but I always believe your somewhere, watching over us. I always believe that and it keeps me going.
But I had something even more important to tell you this time. Something amazing. I hope you can keep this a secret from Mom and Ryuji. I mean, I would imagine Mom would freak the most. But I met a brand new friend. He is funny, cute, energetic-- I swear he won't stay still long enough as he runs on batteries like that big pink bunny from the television with the drums. Oh my god, he IS the energizer bunny...
... Sorry, I let myself ramble there. He isn't the Energizer bunny. After all, hard to not tell since he is yellow, not pink. His name is Musimon. He is a Digimon, or so he told me. He is an adorable creature. At first, I thought he was a gremlin, like from that movie Ryuji used to watch. He denied it of course, but you had to admit, they had big ears too.
It was a bit of a story of how I found him. It was about a few days ago after school. I wasn't in the best place. I was sad. I came home to school to find Mom and Ryuji fighting again. My heartfelt broken hearing them arguing. Ryuji skipping school and Mom telling him to act more his age and stuff, but she is hardly around anymore. I wish we could be a family again... and be together without fighting...
... So I ran out. I just wanted to go anywhere, even in the rain, where I could just be alone and not hear their shouts. I ended up in an ally in Shibuya, the rain keeping my tears from showing
My heart pounded and my breath hitched as I ran down the street, passing by strangers who couldn't see me. Whomever I bumped into was gone as I ran, trying to keep myself from crying out. I hated this. I missed him. If Dad was still alive, none of this would happen. Mom and Big-Brother won't stop fighting and I gave everything I could to keep things together.
I just had to get out of there, and so I ran into a small alleyway out of the sight of the busy street. I broke down there as I fell to the ground, the hard concrete hurting as I slumped down against the wall. The rain continued to fall, though obscured by the narrow ally but still enough to continue to patter against my already soaked sweatshirt and hat. I must of looked miserable there and then.
I missed Dad. I just missed everything about him. As the rain came down and the mist rolled in down the ally, I thought about how he would sing me to sleep. He would sing both Ryuji and me to sleep, singing musical tunes or songs he loved. He loved to sing. It was odd since he was a pilot and astronaut. Still sniffling, I began to try and sing it, my father's voice in my head...
"Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred moments so dear,
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes,
How do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee?
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife?
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes,
How do you measure, a year in the life? "
My voice cracked under a sob that came, a tear rolling down my cheek...
BOOM!!
A loud bang went off near me, and jolted me up. I let out a scream as I jumped up from the floor, and saw something shoot upward. A manhole cover or something, and the 'mist' that I thought was from the foggy rain, billowed and swept outward.
I quickly covered my eyes, and wiped my tears, as the fog spread. No one outside heard, likely due to city traffic and voices. As things calmed down, I lowered my arm, and looked around. I didn't see anything... till soft movement stirred behind a series of boxes and trashcans.
I was startled, afraid to get closer, but soon I saw something stir there. Something small. Perhaps a cat or some dog that got started too. "Um, hello? Is someone there?" I called out.
At my call, something peeked out from the boxes, but quickly withdrew with a squeak. Something was odd about it. It looked yellow. Perhaps it was a yellow labrador dog? I couldn't tell. So oddly enough I hummed the tune I was singing, using the same melody.
What I didn't expect was the same sound to come back in its own chime. The animal was making the sound too, in the same key and pitch. Now I was curious as it peeked out once more, still out of sight.
"It's okay..." I said softly, sniffling the last of my sadness away. I might likely catch a cold in this rain if I stayed out too long. "Come on out. I won't hurt you," I said, crouching low to the ground so it wouldn't be threatened. "Hi there. It's okay... come here..."
It lingered a bit, looking back at me... then something I didn't expect happen. From the top of the trash, two large pair of oddly-shaped 'ears' emerged from it. More of the body stood out, revealing to be an odd looking creature that looked like a stuffed animal came to life.
A yellow creature with white fur on its face and white creature with tiny jeans, shoes and a vest on his body. On top of his heads were something that appeared to be headphones, and his large ears stemmed out from his head, and seemed to move about.
Startled by it, I fell back, catching myself with my hands as I saw the creature, unsure what to think. It was both adorable, but also alarming to see it. It was indeed not a dog!
"Oh my god..." I gasped.
The little rabbit-like creature slowly approached. And to add to the surprise, it did something.
"Did... you sing that?" he asked, his voice a soft squeak.
"Um, excuse me?" I couldn't believe it talked too!
"That song. Was that from you?" he asked again, blinking towards me.
I was puzzled for a bit, not answering too fast as I made sure I wasn't seeing things. "UM... yeah. That was me..." I replied.
His ears went up and a happy grin seemed to appear on his face. "Wow! Your voice is amazing! It's like an angel's voice I followed here. " he said.
I blinked as I slowly stood up, the rabbit looking me up and down since he was so much smaller than me. I looked at him the same way, him seeming stranger to me-- but I couldn't tell anymore. "Are you... a gremlin?" I asked.
"What?!" he gasped, his large ears going up. "Of course not! What kind of Gremlin could look as cute as me?" he asked.
"Clearly you never saw Gizmo..." I replied, remembering how my brother loved that movie growing up.
The Rabbit cocked his head at me. "I'm Musimon! I'm a Digimon! What's your name?" he asked, smiling at me.
I backed up a bit, now a bit nervous how happy it was at me. "Um, me? It's Rei.. My name is Rei.." I answered.
By now i also noticed the little tail he had coming out of his jeans-- in the shape of an odd little musical note. "Weee!" he said as he shook his tail like a happy dog and hopped right up to me. "NIce to meet you, Rei-chan! Wanna be friends?" he said holding out one of his hand ears.
I blinked, unsure what to say or do. He was so nice and genuine about it. I wasn't stupid. I knew not to trust strangers as mom and dad always said... but he seemed different. He was a kid, like me. How could I not trust him? I extended my hand out and shook it, it felt soft to the touch like holding a warm hand even in the rain.
"Sure... I would love to have you for a friend," I replied with a smile. Even the rain didn't bother me as i held on to him.
