Pickle dug through the days mail, sorting everything into neat piles that could be dealt with later in the day, or junk that could be recycled once they had finished. Near the bottom however, they found an envelope that caused them to stop, a big smile growing on their face as they read the return address. Setting it carefully to the side, they finished sorting the rest, throwing away the junk mail, and then finally cut open the letter from their parents, taking a seat at their desk to read through the latest words that had been sent their way. Email was faster, of course, and they did email each other very frequently whenever their parents had to be away for a while, but letters were special.
“To our darling Piscesius,
Of course we knew you would do well in your latest round of exams, you always work so hard. The next time we’re home we’ll all have to go out together to celebrate. Once your next break comes around, we’ll bring you here, it’s absolutely beautiful and we know you would love hiking in the mountains. There’re all sorts of food here that you will likely gorge yourself on as well as soon as you get the chance, we know how much you love trying new things. There should be a package arriving at home any day now that contains a few souvenirs, including some non-perishables that should give you an idea of what we’ve been eating out here.
Earlier this week your father nearly broke his foot helping clear up after a large windstorm damaged some of the trees in the orchard on the property we’re being hosted at. He insisted he could lift one of the larger branches himself and promptly dropped it when the person helping him let go. Only a bit to the left and it would have been square on top of his left foot. I swear sometimes he gets the idea in his head that he needs to impress me still, as if I hadn’t agreed to marry him nearly 20 years ago. He’s glaring at me as I write this, I don’t think he finds it as funny as I do. Silly man.
Do you remember those photos we sent to you a few days ago? I found out where to buy those fruits dried, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to bring some home with me for us all to eat together. We’re both in good health and should be returning home for a while in about a week and a half. Enough time for one more letter from you to reach us here. Let us know if you need anything when we get home okay? We love you and miss you so much.
Love as always,
From your Mother and Father
P.S. I could have held that branch! My fingers were all sweaty and my grip slipped, don’t believe a word she wrote above Pickle! Love you!”
Pickle laughed and folded the letter up neatly, slipping it into a drawer with all the others from this recent trip to be kept until she could get them laminated for safe keeping. She then took the two polaroids of her parents that had also been in the envelope and pinned them to a cork board nearby, taking a moment to look at her parents smiling happily while posing with coworkers and locals. With that done, she pulled a sheet of paper out for herself to write on, plucking her favourite pen from a holder she’d been given a few years back when her parents had gone away for work to South Africa, and began to compose a reply.
“Dear Mom and Dad,
It’s great to hear that you’ll be back so soon, I’m really excited to show you some new stuff I found around town during my walks. There’s this one little soba shop I want to visit with you both, the atmosphere is amazing and I’m pretty sure some of the decorations are antiques. I collected some more bottle caps for Dad too, I’m pretty sure there’s at least a couple he doesn’t have yet. I’ve been keeping the garden weeded and watered and those flowers you bought the last time you were home have started blooming really nicely, they smell wonderful whenever I open the balcony door.
I made some new friends recently! They’re really, really nice and fun to hang around with and I think we’re gonna have a lot of adventures together. They might introduce me to some other friends of their sometime too, which is really exciting because if they’re anything alike I’ll have even more nice people to hang around when I’m not busy. They also like to help people, and I can’t wait to help people with them sometime!
I’ve been eating well, I know you always worry about that, and I’m making sure that I clean the apartment at least once a week. More often if I have the time. The kettle seems to be almost on its last legs though so when you come back we’ll probably need to go shopping for a new one.
I can’t wait to see some of the stuff you’re bringing back with you this time! The pictures you’ve been sending me are all amazing so I want to see some of the souvenirs in person. Those little animal statues you bought kinda remind me of the ones you picked up in Cairo a couple years ago, don’t you think? They’re really neat looking, do you think you can ask what makes the clay so red? Make sure you tell Phoebe and Castian that I say hi, they haven’t been here in ages and I miss them so I’m glad you’re working with them on this trip.
If I can I want to see if I can introduce you to my new friends. I think you’d like them a lot, they’re very sweet.
Love you,
Piscesius.
P.S. Don’t get hurt Dad, it’s not a crime to ask for help lifting heavy things you know! You’re strong but still, be safe!”

Pickle grinned and folded the letter carefully, tucking a strip of photo booth pictures into the envelope with it, a tradition of exchanging recent photos with each letter just another part of the letter exchange. Stepping out of her room and into the kitchen, they then retrieved the postage necessary, writing the relevant addresses and placing the now sealed envelope next to the door to be placed in a nearby post box in the morning. A satisfied smile on their face, they turn back to dealing with the remaining pile of mail.
