A new foe has appeared!
CHALLENGER APPROACHING!
“It’s me, Jokermon! The Fool, the Demon King of the Digital World, the Clown Prince of the Dark Area! Representing the Digimon franchise at long last, it’s the jovial jester, the handsome harlequin, the peerless pierrot, the greatest clown that ever clowned!”
It was about time that Digimon were featured in the newest Super Smash Bros. Game, where Nintendo’s greatest, most iconic characters came together in order to do battle… as well as occasional third-party cameos from Konami, Sega, Capcom, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Square Enix, PlatinumGames, Atlus, Microsoft, SNK and Undertale.
Unfortunately, the fighter chosen to represent the franchise was indeed Jokermon. Perhaps the self-proclaimed Demon King had used his extensive web of connections to pull some strings in the video game industry, or maybe Sakurai just really liked clowns for whatever reason. Regardless of how, he had made it into the roster, and players choosing him for the game’s single-player campaign would find the first CPU opponent to be - ironically enough - a Pokémon! Who’s that Pokémon, you ask?
“Pika pika!” It was Pikachu! Everyone’s favorite electric mouse dropped into the fighting arena, wagging its lightning-shaped tail.
“Pika pika! Pika pika! Is that all you can say, you oversized vermin?” Jokermon frowned in seeming disgust as he made a mocking impression of the yellow rat. “And people have the nerve to call Digimon the inferior franchise! I guarantee you, even Agumon has more brains than you do. Then again, I suppose sitting on the same ageless child’s head for twenty-something years would lower anyone’s intelligence.”
“Pikapi pika!” Pikachu did not take kindly to the clown’s insults, electricity building up in its red cheeks, as it unleashed its signature Thunderbolt attack. “CHUUUUU!!”
The Demon Man-type Digimon avoided the blast of lightning coming his way thanks to his teleportation ability. That ability was a big selling point of his, and competitive players were already coming up with ways to abuse it. When the clown reappeared standing on a higher platform, he was suddenly dressed in a snazzy white uniform with a big red ‘J’ emblazoned on the torso. “Prepare for trouble and make it double! Team Joker’s blasting off at the speed of light! Surrender now or prepare to fight!”
“P-Pika?!” Pikachu’s eyes widened, as a magical circle appeared directly beneath its feet, shooting up powerful beams of light that launched the poor Electric-type Pokémon into the stratosphere in a decisive KO!
“Hahahahaha! Looks like Pikachu is blasting off again!” Jokermon quipped, looking at the camera, just as a twinkle appeared in the sky behind him.
The next opponent was the legendary hero in the green tunic, Link! He proved to be a much tougher challenger than Pikachu. After all, his Master Sword was known as the bane of all evil, and Jokermon was indeed very evil. Lots of dodging and well-timed rolling went into avoiding taking massive damage from his melee attacks. His AI was particularly aggressive too, lunging at the demonic jester at every opportunity. “HIYAAAH! EWAAAH!”
“Sheesh! At least Pikachu was a Pokémon. What’s your excuse for not being able to talk, elf boy?” Jokermon teased his enemy, relying on the Hyrulean stage’s messy platform layout to stay as far away from the hero in green as possible. “You know, I can see where your newest game got its name from. Your breath certainly is wild!” He added, pinching his own nose.
“HAAAAAH!” It looked like Link was angry and done playing around, making a beeline towards a Smash Ball that had only just spawned at the edge of the stage. If he got that power up, it was all over for the clown.
“Hold your Eponas, young man! I know you’re in a hurry to defeat the ultimate evil, but what about all those sidequests?” The Demon King smiled confidently, before clicking his fingers. “Clown Trick!” Yes, that was normally Piedmon’s signature move, but it was so popular that the developers had decided to include it in Jokermon’s standard kit.
“AAH?” To Link’s surprise, a bunch of pots suddenly appeared around him, making him forget all about grabbing that nearby Smash Ball. He instead smashed every single one of the pots like a man possessed, collecting all the green and red Rupees hidden inside. Then a bunch of flying bugs appeared, prompting him to pull out his net and try to catch them. Then Link noticed a crack on a nearby wall, so naturally he had to throw a bomb at it and see what secrets were hidden behind. There was seemingly no end to these distractions, making Link lose the match via time-out!
Jokermon turned to a Zelda Trophy that had spawned seconds before the fight had ended, smiling smugly at it and shrugging. “Well, excuuuuuse me, princess!”
