Just outside of whitewater lay this little mechanic shop; one that took whatever job was lent to it. Did whatever it was asked for. The two individuals that were commonly seen in the store being a weregarurumon x and some human spirit wielder. Both of which had gained a bit of a reputation as rather professional even though they didn’t get a huge amount of business.
The two story building was fairly well maintained, even the ‘yard’ that it had was well taken care of and the small pathway that led up to the door or the driveway that led to the double garages felt… oddly human. Heck even the grass was cut to a certain standard that could only be found in society hill; one of the more ‘higher up’ areas of the human world.
The exterior was still rather simple, rather Japanese and felt more than just a shop even with the neon sign outside that said ‘open’. The old fashioned Japanese structuring was probably part of the reason for that, mixed with the current day way that the Japanese were doing their ‘modern’ aesthetic made for quite an odd sight. But for the digital world it would fit right in in a way.
Inside was a fairly different story, the main entrance led into a well taken care of shop. The lines of devices, odds, ends and mechanical nonsense that mons or humans might find useful were all organized in such an easy to find a way that it’d be impossible to not find what you were looking for! Perhaps it was just because whoever did the organizing found the other shops in the digital world a little too messy or something…
Glass displays held the more expensive looking pieces that were in direct sight of the glass counter that a burly six foot five man was taking a load off. Reading the daily newspaper; he was unaware of the proper weather outside. Sunny, some clouds and a sprinkle of rain here or there. Though he was looking at the more evening stuff for that’s when he would get out of his store and go out and about. The man would check his watch, quirking a brow and grimacing.
”Only twelve huh? Doesn’t feel like I’ve been open for that long.”
The man sighed and turned the page in his newspaper; more of the same. More happening across the digital world. This whole demonlord business getting everyone in a blind panic. People vanishing or disappearing and what was that about an entire village going dark? He’d shake his head slowly; it didn’t seem like the end times to him but that's how a lot of the mons seemed to think. Afraid of the world and what it was going to bring; but they didn’t seem to realize the harsh reality that the digital world was just plain dangerous and this stuff just kept happening.
But then there were those big old heroes that showed up where they were needed. Skipping over the few stories and odd conversations he saw in the paper the man frowned a little bit when he got to the business portion of it. Noting that his shop’s ad had been pushed to the fourth business page. Putting them just behind the other mechanic stores… Then again there was this scare of using humans for too much recently too… some mons not liking how integrated they were becoming because of this whole DATS thing.
”It’ll probably settle down…”
”Talking to yourself again?”
The man looked up from his paper to note that his companion had come from upstairs; she wasn’t wearing her holosuit so it was quite a sight. You never got used to seeing weregarurumon’s. Nor did you ever get used to their X counterparts that had such long claws. Kan let out a sigh and shook his head.
”Yes and no. You heading out?”
”Picking up a few packages. I’ll be back in an hour or so.”
The man nodded and watched the beast lumber out onto the ‘sales floor’ and through the door. She was oddly gentle with opening the door, not wanting to smash it to pieces again. With a sigh he’d close the paper and leaned back in his chair.
”Yeah probably…”

Alejandra was left stranded after the event. Not exactly stranded, thinking about it: she was rather close to the city, just touching the outskirts; nothing was stolen, except for maybe a piece of her own sanity; she wasn't hurt, and even the bruises from the fall seemed to have vanished completely. Yet, she couldn't help but feel stranded and psychologically exhausted. She was betrayed, and possibly belittled, by a creature she had no knowledge about. Her own vulnerability disgusted her. Especially after feeling the rush of turning into a Digimon, knowing she still couldn't do anything about it infused her soul with rage. She needed more knowledge, she needed more power.
It's not healthy to dwell on such a thing, she thought in a spark of sanity; there were plenty of ways for her to know more. That was when she decided to check if any of her stuff was damaged by the fall. If the fall really happened, that is; she wasn't sure whether the plateau really was beyond those woods or that, too, was part of the illusion. Her heart decided she didn't want to know.
Her phone worked as usual; her e-book reader, not so much. She groaned as she realized the only screen it'd show was that damn picture of the Nazca Spider. The machine was unresponsive to button presses, touches, anything. Wandering the outskirts with the broken device in her hands, she quickly reached a rather urban-looking area; the thought of finding someplace where to fix her device immediately crossed her mind. After all, if there was an e-book store in Whitewater, there must've been a store to buy and fix the readers too.
It didn't take long for her to find one that looked respectable enough. The sign confirmed the store was open, and the only thing left to do was to get ready for social interaction. It was about the same as mentally preparing for a call to the pizzeria to get your pizza order; except there was no phone or pizza involved, which made it even worse.
As she approached the door, the thing seemed to move on its own; peeking out of it, a set of claws like she had never seen before. Aleja hopped backwards at least three times out of sheer shock; she watched in horror as the perfect incarnation of a Yee Naaldlooshii from her grandma's stories materialized before her. She backed up again, tripping on herself and falling flat on her ass. How many more monsters from her mythology had to crop up out of nowhere? Was her religion onto something?
"Y-Y-Yee Naaldlooshii..." she babbled, as her eyes watered up. Her hand instinctively reached for the Digivice - as if the thing could directly exorcise the demon.

Suffice to say the thing that Gretal was expecting to run into was not this. Very much so not this. A young woman of sorts backpedaling in front of her and falling flat on their ass. The large wolf blinked slowly as she heard them babble something and let out a soft sigh. Was this one of those few rare first timers? Or perhaps maybe something entirely else? Regardless she felt that the fear was warrented. She was an ultimate level after all and not everyone got to see one right off the bat.
”Look I’m not whatever you think I am. Just a weregarurumon, a type of digimon. So you don’t really need to worry, aint gonna hurtcha. Unless you wanna hurt my contract owner but I don’t think that’s the case.”
The weregarurumon offered their hand down to the individual in front of them. Sure the claws were long and the professional merc probably was much more threatening than they figured. Noting that the other reached for their digivice and the distinct lack of a partner either meant two things.
Spirit user.
Or someone that didn’t have their partner yet; the latter of the two being far more unlikely than the first. If this was a first timer or someone that was new they certainly came to the right place for it. Seeing how kan was one of the oldest spirit users running around with the most experience even if he didn’t look it.
”Look I’m going somewhere but if you’re around here you’re obvious lookin for some tech nonsense yeah? Just head in, Kan [the guy behind the counter] will give you a hand.”
With that gretal would give the other a small smile and step around them, heading off down the street. She after all wasn’t allowed to use her jet pack to get around in the city with how bloody loud it was...

The monster inched closer; Alejandra didn't know what to fear most: the fangs, the claws or the powerful build. It started talking, in a rather calm voice; it explained to her why her fear was, to put it simply, out of place. Aleja just... stood there, dumbfounded.
She sat on the ground, lips trembling and hands clutching the Digivice; she didn't even realize the monster was going to help her get back on her feet: as it calmly walked past, she just stared. How scary the whole experience was to her, utterly indescribable. Fighting to save someone else's life was easy, in a way; feeling cornered like that on the other hand felt like an impossible situation to get out of alive.
She waited until she couldn't hear any more steps before getting up. Shaking the dust off, her gaze fell on her phone's screen.
"Ah ah ah ah."
It was a message from him, from Iktomimon; that much was certain. "You again?! Are you finished?!" Aleja replied, stabbing the screen with her index finger. Was the monster, again, just an illusion? Was anything she was experiencing even real, for God's sake? "It wasn't me. But she's right. Go and meet the owner, and show him the Digivice."
Sighing loudly, Aleja pushed against the door and entered the shop. She was immediately captured by the orderly placed shelves of mechanical devices, organized by shape and size and color and who knows what other criterion. On the other side of a similarly shelved class counter was a floating newspaper - no, a man reading a newspaper. One last look at her reader confirmed that it was just showing the picture of the Nazca Spider lines. So, Aleja quietly approached the counter. "Uhm, hello?"
She waited for the man to acknowledge her presence, if he hadn't done so until then. "My e-book reader is stuck on this image... I thought you could fix it?" she said, and waited for an answer. "... and I'm told you should see this," she continued, pulling out her Digivice, "it isn't broken, but I'm told you might know something about it."

Honestly gretal knew how it was, if this is how someone reacted to a giant wolf man woman thing… Well it’d be better if she wasn’t around for kan’s explanation or for whatever the other needed. So she’d be quick about it, making sure that her strides were a little longer. Little firmer. To the point of where she wouldn’t be seen or heard by the human.
The human male was still reading his newspaper, unaware of what was going on outside of it. The orderly placed shelves giving way to the sight of Alejandra. A woman that the man had never seen before. He’d slowly fold the newspaper and a smile split his serious looking face. His voice was a lot softer than his looks suggested; though perhaps it was because he was dealing with a customer? There was an underlying amount of gruffness and experience that he couldn’t shake no matter how much he tried.
”Hello! Welcome to my shop!”
The man blinked a bit as the other spoke about her problem, the image that it was stuck on was one that he had never seen before. But judging by the item itself it certainly wasn’t made in the digital world. Which could lead to a host of problems… The man mulled and if allowed would inspect the object after taking it from her.
”I can run some scans of it, see what’s wrong. It’s from the human world yes? Most human equipment can’t run in the digital world. You have to get a digital world equivalent usually… But this is definitely different seeing how it’s actually on. When did this problem start occurring and have you noticed it acting or doing anything other than this?”
A few common questions as he pulled out a small scanning device, one that would hopefully find out if the device had been compromised externally. While he was certain that it was probably just the digital world being well… the digital world the varied amount of things that it could be would baffle any proper technician. He was not an exception here but he had to keep a calm face for a customer that looked at ouch nervous.
Then came the next statement.
How he might know something about it. His expression didn’t waiver in the slightest and the man sighed softly. He’d take out his own digivice, a very surprisingly pristine D-1 with pure white… well everything.
”Well. I can tell you a few things. That’s called a D-tector. It’s used primarily by people capable of turning into digimon by the use of external powers known as spirits. You just happen to be one of those people, as am I. May I?”
The man would offer to take the device for a moment, examining it as well. It was fairly new from what he could tell, there weren’t the stereotypical wear and tear from overuse or from the lack of holding it properly. She must have just gotten it recently…
”I’ve been at this nonsense for about twelve years now. So trust me when I say this, it’s not the end of the world if you’ve gotten this. Just takes a little to get used to.

The man immediately jumped on to work. Aleja briefly felt relief, as that could only be a sign of good will if not just eagerness. She let him have the e-reader, not without keeping an eye on it. She didn't want it to be dropped, crushed, or otherwise badly handled; she couldn't just assume anyone could do their job. She couldn't, for example.
The man started asking very appropriate questions on the account of what exactly had happened to the thing. "Well, I..." she begun, trying to recall what exactly had happened, "... As soon as I got here, it started displaying that. I couldn't even read one single book. It's been stuck like this for ages, and I'm sure it should be way past its battery capacity by now..."
He took out something that looked like a tool, its usage unknown. By the gestures he performed while using it, Aleja could deduce it was useful to detect whatever problem her thing had.
After that, Kan started explaining to her what her device was - not the e-reader, the Digivice. She knew about D-Tectors, and that they were used to turn into Digimon; she could put two and two together to conclude that she had, in fact, turned into one in the cave - that is, provided it wasn't an illusion. When he demanded to see it more closely, she didn't just leave it on the counter but clutched it in her hands, rotating her wrist as needed.
Then it struck her, completely out of nowhere. "T-twelve years?!" her surprise could be very well inferred by her widened eyes, raised eyebrows and slightly open mouth. That piece of information was, in itself, a hurtful revelation. She had gotten some incredible power - to turn into a powerful creature known as "Athenamon", for instance - and she was sure that kind of power could have been used for something... greater. Not an electronics shop, at the very least. She had to know, she absolutely needed to know if that was just a joke. She didn't consider that, maybe, he could've been some kind of superhero by night and regular dude by day.
She had seen very powerful Digimon in her life before, and for someone that "had been at it for twelve years", his powers must've been way underwhelming or he was just not using them at all. However, she lacked the gall to actually say it out loud. "In twelve years... did you get stronger?" That was the least hurtful way she could put it; Aleja wasn't sure herself of what she had just said. "I mean, how does one get stronger?"

Kan would never do one of his customers wrong, he’d of course always go the furthest he could within reason. From what he could tell initially it was just a difference of technology from the human world to that of the digital. If he switched some parts around it should work as though it was brand new.
”What it looks like is that the digital world is mucking with it. I bet if I took it apart and added some digital world parts that it’d be right as rain. A lot of human tech doesn’t work in the digital world. But depending on the model or age of it they can even get powered by it in a way.”
The man explained and frowned a bit as the scanner seemed to come up short, well not so much short as shorting out on it’s own… Which could mean a plethora of things. Not many of them would be good! He hoped for a better outcome but this meant he’d have to take it apart.
”Yeah I’m going to have to take it apart to see what’s wrong. Something’s mucking with the scanner.”
He’d grumble a bit and lean to pull out some other tools, he looked a bit amused at her surprise at him doing this for twelve years. He’d slowly nod his head at the ‘question’ and with consent would start to take apart the E-book reader…
Kan had to stop himself at that question. In those twelve years did he get stronger? He’d consider this question for a moment and then nod to himself.
”I’ve made the climb to super mega twice. This would be my third time. I’d say as a person I’m stronger than I was starting out and as a spirit wielder that means a lot. Events happen and change things for people in ways they never expect. That you’ll never expect.”
He didn’t seem too insulted by the seeming implication that he was weak. But her follow up question was one that… Well that was the kicker wasn’t it?
”Travel. Fight. Meet people, interact. Make friends, don’t do things on your own. To get stronger it’s not all just about your forms. It’s about you. Are the spirits you have a mask for you to hide behind to do as you want? Friends that support you through thick and thin? A guardian that wishes to protect you? What is your relationship with your spirit? What is the relationship you want? For spirit users these questions are ussually the best to ask. It’s not so much what you want all the time either. If the spirit is ‘awoken’ in a sense it’s best to talk and see what it wants or needs. Which can only further your own power as your ‘wills’ align. My spirit for example is a machleomon named Snyder. He’s a raging alcoholic and he likes to fight. If he wasn’t ‘sleeping’ right now he’d probably want to fight your spirit.”
The man snorted and shook his head, snyder had also this thing about making kan work out. It was amusing to him and the man went along with it. Ever since he had bulked up considerably and well… it made him feel a lot better! He’d pop open the casing of the E-book and after a little fiddling would find an interesting surprise…
”That explains the scanner fizzing out…”

Aleja straightened her neck, tilting to the left and the right to see what exactly the man was doing to the e-book reader, only retracting when he'd address her directly. The dynamic was rather funny, seen from the right angle. She looked genuinely concerned for the safety of her device, as if it were a sick pet. She gulped at the words "take it apart". Her shoulders were rather tense and her voice ever-so-slightly shaky when she replied: "If it's what the thing really needs..."
She didn't know anything about the actual hardware of the technology she used on a daily basis, and while there definitely were one too many scammers in the world ready to take her money, he didn't quite look the part. Indeed, what did he look like, other than a fixer?
Aleja stood silent as the man mustered up quite the speech to answer the question. "S... Super Mega?..." she muttered under her breath; according to the evolution chart, that was the highest tier of the Digivolution lines for the vast majority of Digimon; and not only did he get there once, he was there twice and wasn't even going to stop. The girl had to second guess herself for thinking him not that strong just based on the context he had found him; still, the situation begged the question: "Is he a rare thing? Or is it normal for Digimon to reach the highest step on the ladder multiple times?"
Kan's speech lifted her spirits up in a way she didn't think was possible. Her hands instinctively went to her chest as she repeated the words: "It's about me... and the relationships I build?". Aleja looked lost in thought for a second. Was that really what she needed to do? To finally get out of her comfort zone and make the effort to interact with people and build solid relations with them? That seemed so much easier said than done. And what did Iktomi want? His motives were completely obscured by his mysterious and unpredictable behaviour.
"What he wants?..." she said, taking her phone out of her pocket. No new messages, and the silence made it almost seem like he didn't have anything to say. But she knew that he did, in fact, know all of that beforehand. Iktomi had shown multiple times a level of predictive capacity close to literal future vision; what could such an otherworldly being possibly want?
"Kan..." she begun, "... Can you show me? What a Spirit Wielder with a deep connection to their spirit is like?" She wasn't sure how to put it in more specific terms.
"Hm?" She stood on her toetips to try and see what the problem was after the man had opened the case. "Is there a problem? Is it fixable?" She asked, with interlocked fingers over her chest.

Kan shifted slightly at hearing that concern, seeing that concern. He’d gently run a pair of fingers along the seams so he could see where it would be the best to take it apart. In the digital world there was a lot of ways to tell if things were wrong. He’d be careful about taking it apart and his eyes flicked to the physical represantion of the wrongs. Some kind of coding? What was that even? He’d frown a bit and lean to scan that with the device from earlier… Just what was this coding and where did it come from?
”This is definitely the source of the interference… But I’m not getting anything from it. Or rather. I am but my scanner can’t seem to make heads or tails of it so I’ll need to plug it into something and see if I might be able to get that coding into a different device entirely. When was it that you noticed that it was like this?”
The man seemed perplexed for a moment and tilted his head as she echoed what he said. He’d give a small nod to her; it was a simple thing. Building relationships with spirits was important especially if they were able to speak and interact with you.
”Exactly. Spirits, especially ones that are ‘active’ are like entire people living in your pocket.”
Kan shifted and brought out a small device, one that would click into place on the charging port and usb of the device if it had one. If he could he’d try to pull that coding into it. If he couldn't do that? well… What was he going to do next?
”They all have wants and desires just like you. So matching or coming to an understanding is kinda needed.”
Kan pause as she asked him to show her what a spirit wielder with a deep connection to their spirit was like. He’d quietly take out his own device and place it down on the counter. He’d tap at the device a few times and a bored and somewhat tired sounding voice piped up.
”Whaddya want… I was sleeping.”
”You up to show someone what we’re about after I’m done fixing this?”
”Yeah sure… though I’ll need to wake myself up a bit.. Gimme like… thirty minutes tops.”
Kan snorted a bit and slid the device to the woman, she would easily see what the problem was and what the connection was between it and the ‘extra’ device.
”It is. But I’m not sure what the code is. It’s… alternating in such a way that I don’t think it’s a normal type of code. It could be because of your device or something that you picked up along the way. Can you scan it with your device or does it do anything strange? I’d say it’s fixable once that is figured out.”
