Colin listened as Honoka stated what it was like to have spirits. For a few moments, he wondered what it would be like if Luke and Bellamy were spirits that occupied his body in spirit evolution, and shuddered a little at first, but as he thought of it more, thought it would be pretty neat actually in a way. But he shook these thoughts away as Honoka spoke of more personal fears.
She mentioned she was nervous of DATS, which was understandable. But also AEGIS. This mention whipped Colin’s attention, but supposed he’d best hold his tongue on that for the moment, given she rather empathized with his interest in flying. He chuckled and nodded at her enthusiasm.
“Yeah! Exactly!” he said, “Aw man, it’s so wonderful being able to fly around the digital world and see it from the sky. If you’d like, one day I could invite you to ride on my airship digimon, Daedalus.”
Colin was then distracted by Honoka’s spirit acting so that it made her lean out of her seat. Honoka explained that it was her spirit Lulu that had caused it. He smiled and nodded. “That’s okay. Nice to meet you, Lulu.” he said, hoping this was the right way to talk to a spirit.
He listened to Honoka as she talked about her gymnastic talents. She said that she liked the parts where she danced with ribbons and balls. “Ah, I love watching the ribbon events at the olympics, they’re so elegant and pretty!” he said, a little more enthusiastically than he normally would. But it was still the truth, Colin appreciated what the gymnasts did in their sport.
Colin then noted that Honoka probably hadn’t been accepted at the professional level and it seemed like a bitter thing for her, so he made note not to press on it again. In fact he made a distraction to change the subject.
“Also, you don’t have to worry about AEGIS.” Colin assured her. Then he supposed gentle honesty was the best approach here. “Just, I’m actually part of AEGIS, and I assure you we don’t go around arresting everyone involved with digimon. We basically go around making sure Tokyo is safe, make sure no dangerous digimon are about, and try to remind those involved with digimon that aren’t hiding their power levels so to say should really keep on the low-down. You seem pretty adept to it so far, I had no idea you were a spirit user.”
Honoka then mentioned there was something else she’d like to be devoted to. “Ah yes? What’s that?” Colin asked curiously.

Colin seemed to have mistaken Honoka's impassioned love for flying for her spirit's. And she wasn't sure how to address that. So Honoka laughed. She couldn't help it, really. It was such a weird situation! "No! That wasn't my spirit, Colin!" She rolled the tension off her shoulders again. "I happen to like flying. A bit more than I thought I would at first. And I'd love to..." Huh. She had to process that. They had train Digimon, after all. Why wouldn't they have... airship Digimon. Digital World was weird. "I've never been on an airship before. I'd love to go on one!"
Huh? Why's he talking to me? Tell him to stop talking to other women in the middle of a date! Kick him in the balls, Honoka!
"Erm... anyways. Regardless, Lulu says 'hello'. In her own... special way." Hopefully the conversation would move on from that awkward misunderstanding. But she really couldn't blame Colin for that. It probably wasn't his first time dealing with someone who had such a... fluctuating personality.
Gymnastics! That was something else to talk about. "I agree!" Honoka nodded. "Though it's really difficult to get the hang of! Every little movement you make will affect the movement of something else, so a routine can feel a little restricting at times, since doing something freestyle will get you deductions..." She noted with a smile, remembering on the many, many times that's happened to her.
"But it's not like I hate it or anything! It feels amazing when all your training and hard work pays off, and it's also taught me a good deal about controlling my body and giving myself more keen observational skills. Most people will see a routine and only be able to spot the tiny mistakes, like a gymnast stumbling or fumbling with their ribbon, but really practicing teaches you to notice the little details. So even if I never really make something of myself with gymnastics, I don't regret all the time and hard work I've put into it!"
The subject changed again, for Colin to talk about his relations to AEGIS. She listened thoughtfully, and nodded at the end. "Truth be told, I really didn't know the difference between the two organizations, but... that honestly doesn't sound so bad," Honoka noted. "I've always felt strange about Digimon being in the human world, personally. It's something that I've been thinking a lot about, to be honest... I don't think it's fair that they have to live in secret while any child or adult with a Digivice can go around freely in almost any other part of the world, but... some humans can't even tolerate each other for being just a little bit different, let alone alien dinosaurs with giant laser cannons and missiles...
"But there might be Digimon out there that could solve so many problems only us humans seem to have a problem with, you know? Like, maybe there's a Digimon that can treat cancer as if it were simply an allergy. Or come up with a plentiful source of energy that doesn't heat up the planet. I know that's probably a little optimistic and naïve, but there's a part of me that wants to give Digimon a chance, but..."
Honoka's face sunk as she rubbed her wrists. There wasn't anything resembling a mark or injury anymore, but sometimes she'd still feel them ache in the middle of the night when she felt she was alone. "Just like humans, there are bad Digimon out there, too. And letting Digimon do as they please would let give the more vile Digimon access to billions of more defenseless victims..."
She shook it off and forced a smile once more. "Umm... sorry about that. I guess I was getting a little too intense for a first date, wasn't I?" She forced a giggle before continuing. "But as for what I want to do... I guess I just want to help out in whatever way I can, you know? Whether it's making sure someone else doesn't go through something awful in the this world, or making sure a Digimon can get along peacefully in ours..."
A thought came to her head and she smiled back at Colin. "Oh, but I'm not planning on putting on spandex and becoming a vigilante or anything! The only spandex I own is a leotard or two, and the good ones can get pretty expensive!" After the joke she got a bit more serious and added. "But I do want do something. It's like people seem to get these..." She briefly held up her Digivice. "...for no good reason. But whether it's fate or just some giant coincidence, if I'm gonna be able to talk to digital ghosts and transform into a Digimon, I want to do some good..."

Colin realized that he was mistaking who had the enthusiasm here. He nodded apologetically as the error was rectified. “Ah, sorry. I think this is something I need to get used to, so I apologize if I offend you or your spirits.” he said.
Colin listened in silence as Honoka described what gymnastics was like. The meaningful, flowing movement of it all, the triumph of making such wonderful movements connect, the discipline of mind and body, often overcoming natural reactions which could break it all down by out-of-control reflexes. “Gosh, that’s awesome.” was all Colin could say in response. He knew nothing about the subject, but he was drawn in by how Honoka described it. “Can I ask what your favourite moment was when doing gymnastics?” he asked, eagerly.
When Colin revealed he was part of AEGIS, he listened to what Honoka had to say in response. She was concerned about digimon in the human world, considering their abilities. And Colin felt similarly. That was why he had taken up his sister’s offer to be a part of her organization, as more guidance than enforcement.
Then Honoka continued, grasping the nuance of how digimon being accepted in the human world had its advantages and disadvantages. Yes, an integrated human/digimon society could be very good, but also very bad. Honoka apologized about being a bit too intense for a first date. At this he smiled and gave a friendly hand expression. “Nah, it’s okay, I agree with you about all that. And I think it’s appropriate since we’re both involved with digimon.”
Colin listened to what Honoka’s aim was, just to help out however she could. He tried not to blush at the mention of spandex, but approved of what she said she wanted to do. “Well, that’d be fantastic, really. It’d make a much better outcome if, say, a digimon ended up lost on the streets of Tokyo, or if a highschooler ended up with a digimon partner if they encountered someone like you to help them out, rather than the Police or something worse.”
By now their meals had been prepared, and the Floramon waitress presented their dishes. “Ah, thanks.” Colin said, pleased at the sight and smell of their chicken vegetable ramen. “Well, Itadakimasu, as they say… in… the other world.” Colin added, chuckling awkwardly as he realized that this was Terminus City and not Tokyo.

"It's fine, really!" Honoka assured Colin, waving off the momentary distress. "I've only just gotten used to it myself. I can't blame you much in that regard!"
And not only did Colin listen to Honoka go on and on (and on) about her hobbies, but even seemed interested in them. Or at least, was incredibly convincing about it. He asked her what her favorite moment, and Honoka had to pause. Did she... even have one? Truth be told, her placements and scores never really mattered to her. In fact, during meets where she hadn't performed as well as she thought she could have and was still praised, it left a sour taste in her mouth.
But for Honoka, the joy she found in it was her gradual improvement. "I guess... I don't really have a favorite moment..." She reasoned. "But more like... a lot of little moments? Like, if I train to move in a certain way, but I'm still unable to get a certain maneuver just right. But one day, I'm just able to do it. I think those little moments of noticeable improvements are what I enjoy the most. It's like I'm discovering something new that I'm capable of all over again. But not because I was just born that way, but because of my own efforts..." She wasn't sure if that would make sense to Colin, but it was how she thought. Winning competitions and placing well was one thing, but whether it was because of past glories or trauma, what happened in the past wasn't something that Honoka believed that she should dwell too much on. Just because you can't forget you've done, or what happened to you doesn't mean that you have to let it hold you down.
Thankfully Colin was also fairly accommodating towards Honoka's rather intense talk as well. She nodded and added, "I'm learning that the right thing to do isn't always that obvious..." She admitted. "But sometimes it is that obvious, and I don't want to be someone that can't do anything when there's someone in need of help. All the good intentions in the world won't matter if you're too weak or useless to help..."
Then the food came. Honoka chuckled at Colin's little awkward moment. Her face got a little red though, as she followed it up by clapping her hands together and said, perhaps a little too loudly, "Itadakimasu!" It was more than a little awkward, but manners were manners, right?
However, when Honoka was prepared to eat, the conversation came to a halt. At that point, Honoka began to quickly down her meal with deadly efficiency. It didn't look messy, or improper, or anything along those lines. It looked like a well-honed skill as she would quickly devour her meal to the last crumb, slurp, and sip. As if she had even optimized her eating habits as to spend the least possible amount of time eating.
And as that happened, she looked up from her bowl, realized how... unseemly that might have appeared, and looked awkwardly away from Colin.

Colin was glad that he hadn’t caused any distress with Honoka’s spirits. Despite his experience with digimon, spirits were still very much a new concept to him, and he hoped to eventually learn how to properly conduct himself in their presence.
As Honoka answered his question as to what her most favourite moment was, Colin tried to picture what it was like for her in those moments when she achieved those extra feats, and how much practice it would take to get her to that threshold. Colin had felt the same when he had evolved his digimon partners to their next levels, but he didn’t presume that it was exactly the same situation. Honoka had achieved her gymnastic skills through her own efforts, and for that he admired her.
“That sounds brilliant.” Colin said in response, genuinely moved by this story. “Honestly, gymnastics scared me a little in high school at first, but then my digimon partners joined me, with holosuits, and they’re both little dynamos, and their help got me through the beginner stage at least.” he gave a nervous chuckle and scratched the back of his head. “Not to say it’s anything near as high as you got in the skill ranks, just, I get that feeling of succeeding in new skills with good encouragement.”
Colin hoped that it was a nice thing to say as the food arrived. Little more was said as the food arrived, so Colin didn’t lift his eyes up until he had nearly finished, in which he saw that Honoka had already finished. And that she seemed awkward because of it.
“Heh, wow, you seem to have enjoyed that.” Colin remarked. He noticed that she seemed a little embarrassed about it, so he felt the need to talk further. “And that’s okay. I have an elder sister, and she could eat even faster than that.” why was he even explaining himself at this? “Heck, everyone has their own speeds, I don’t mind, really.” he hoped to clear up any misunderstandings at this.

Honoka Nijimura | Colin James
Honoka shifted around uncomfortably in her seat, not because the seat was problematic, but simply because she just didn't like the attention at the moment. Which was... kind of dumb, really. It was a date, so of course the two of them would have their attention on the other! Still, it wasn't something Honoka could say she was used to. Every time she tried to shift the focus on Colin, he would just shift it right back to her, even though he was the one she was trying to please!
Then again... did that mean that Colin was just doing the same thing? Honoka couldn't be too sure. She was pretty sure she had told this to herself a thousand times at this point, but maybe she should just relax a little more and just let things flow naturally.
Colin spoke about his own experiences, with Honoka nodding along and smiling. "No, I've never really considered people's accomplishments to be the point," She stated. Sure, it sounded like some generic, please-everyone answer, but it was what she genuinely believed. "There are always inherit differences in each other, whether it's because you were born that way, or you can't devote the time or energy towards practicing as much as you'd like. So I think just trying your best and working on improving yourself is what's important.
"It's probably why I grew so attached to it, because I could see how far I've progressed, unlike... so many other things in my life..." She let out a sad chuckle. Then the food came, she applied her usual technique, much to Colin's amusement. But then he said something concerning, commonly known as a "red flag".
"I see... well... maybe I could learn a thing or two from her, then..." She replied, hiding that concern with a smile. Being compared to a date's sister meant two things. Either they weren't that into you as a date, or that they were into you as a date, which was potentially more alarming!
But it seemed like Colin wanted to move on from this bit as well, which was for the best! Just talk about anything else! "So umm... bowling! What's your favorite part about that?"
