" I suppose you're correct about that," said Katsumi, who watched with keen eyes as Suoh-san moved his queen's knight over to the edge of the board, positioning it in such a way that it was now primed and ready to capture her bishop at a moment's notice. A good play, for someone who took pride in feeling things out by instinct instead of training and technique. Take, for instance, the move he just played. From that one single movement, approximately four-hundred different combinations of moves could be calculated. Katsumi could not possibly know them all, of course, but she could at least agree with Suoh-san's observations that mathematics had a hand in just about everything humankind has ever achieved for itself. His decision to move the queen's knight had also given Katsumi the perfect in for an explanation of another piece on the board. Sadly, she would have to take advantage of an opening he had created for himself, but understanding how to cover one's weaknesses was part of the learning experience. " Ah! Perfect. I can teach you about this piece now," she said, before pointing toward her second tallest piece, her fingers hovering over it with a peculiar menace. " This is the queen, and she's a combination of the bishop and the rook, which are those little castle-shaped pieces on the corners of the board; she can move any number of spaces horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, so long as one of your pieces aren't blocking her path." She would then take her queen and slide it up and to the left by three squares, dropping it directly in front of Suoh-san's freshly-moved knight, and right in the way of the Black King. " I've a clear line of sight to your king now, which means he's 'in check'. When this happens, you'll either need to move one of your pieces so that it blocks mine, or move your king to safety. And he can only move one square at a time." It was the first check of the game, and Katsumi already had plans for keeping her queen safe from counterattack formed in the back of her mind. There were plenty of avenues for Suoh-san to take, but she was determined to play her very best, even during an instance where it wasn't necessary to do so. Such was a consequence of her upbringing, after all; Katsumi Hirata always strives for excellence. Win or lose, she would remember this as a pleasant game. As would another creature that lurked in the bushes some couple dozen meters away, seemingly fixated on the young chess enthusiast with great interest...

Katsumi moved her queen infront of his recently moved knight before explaining that a queen was in essence a combination of the bishop and rook and since that piece could move any number of spaces horizontally, vertically, or diagonally as long as there wasn't a piece blocking its path. This made the queen probably one of the deadliest if not the deadliest piece on a chess board. Then when he noticed he had unwittingly put himself in check with his last move he said "Whoops. Looks like Ah put myself in a fix without realizin' it. Ah well its all part of the learnin' process right?"
Analyzing the board looking for the best way out of the mess he was in Blaster saw a few avenues that would get his king out of check. Yet which was the right approach was the big question. Then as he saw the move he wanted to make his eyes seemed to light up as he took his queen's bishop moving it in front of his queen taking his king out of check.
Meanwhile while Kima and Takoda were watching Kima heard a faint tapping coming from her Xros Loader and pulled the mostly forest green device from her pocket noticing a message was being texted to her from the others inside the mentioned digivice in her hand. She then tapped Takoda on the shoulder and showed the device to him. The message was mentioning they weren't alone but not to panic and to just be ready for anything. Kima and Takoda looked at each other with Kima appearing uneasy but Takoda had a calm look on his face that calmed her down before the pair focused back on the chess game. Kima clutched her Xros Loader close to her while keeping an ear out like she knew Takoda was doing.

" That's correct, Suoh-san," asserted Katsumi, watching as he committed to developing his queen's bishop one square upward, which not only took his king out of check but also generated a threat zone for her queen. " Getting better is simply a matter of practice." Unwilling to let her queen be taken so early in the game, Katsumi decided to attack the knight standing adjacent to it, removing Suoh-san's piece from the board and placing the queen atop where it once stood. With his rook's pawn standing in the way, the White Queen would be safe from harm until reinforcements could be called in to support her. " For what it's worth, I think you're a remarkable player so far," Katsumi said to Suoh-san, running slender fingertips through her delicate brown hair. Her smile came off warm and gentle like the afternoon sun. " Moriya-san clearly underestimated you." In the distance, hidden from sight, the unknown presence continued to quietly observe the game between Katsumi and her opponent. Clever eyes caught glimpse of a handbag so carelessly draped over her shoulder, just ripe for the taking.

"Shame some experienced players seem ta have forgotten tha they were inexperienced rookies at this game once. Unfortunately some of them let tha skill go ta their heads which results in folks like Moriya. I dunno how ya were able ta be so patient with him. It was actually takin' everythin' Ah had not ta heave him inta the bushes." Blaster said as thinking about Katsumi's classmate made him shake his head and sigh softly.
Blaster watched as his knight was taken by Katsumi's queen. It appeared her putting him in check was a trap and he unwittingly walked headlong into it. This made him smile before he said "Guess Ah am not the only one who can be unpredictable huh? Ah guess Ah'll have ta keep tha in mind."
"Why thank ya for the compliment, Hirata-san. Shame Moriya didn't seem ta notice since he was buried in his own ego so deep it would be a miracle if he sees daylight." Blaster said essentially politely saying Moriya had his head so far up his ass he probably couldn't see the light of day.
"Now lesse if wha Ah can do with this mess Ah put myself in." Blaster said with a light-hearted chuckle as he scanned the board before glancing at his bishop parked right above his queen before the pawns next to the bishop caught his attention. Would that? Yes it just might. Grabbing the pawn two squares away from that bishop he moved it forward one so now the white queen would either have to retreat and regroup or attack.

Much to Katsumi's sympathy, Suoh-san couldn't wrap his mind around why some people allowed their sense of ego to run rampant, then expressed some measure of disbelief with her ability to exercise toleration for Moirya-san's uncivilized behavior. Evidently, he was of a mind to throw him into the bushes, which made Katsumi giggle slightly at the thought of him being served a heaping helping of his own medicine. " Moriya-san definitely has issues, but I think he could be a decent person if he didn't behave so selfishly." Eagerly, Katsumi awaited Suoh-san's next move, to which he would oblige her by moving his queen's knight's pawn forward one space in a transparent effort to put pressure on the White Queen. Not if Katsumi Hirata had anything to say about it. Without missing a single beat, she pinched her queen between gentle fingertips and slid it to her right by six spaces, placing it diagonally next to Suoh-san's only remaining knight. " One player's messes are another player's hidden opportunities," Katsumi playfully reminded Suoh-san, certain he would be perceptive enough to apply this gem of wisdom later into the game. Part of her expected him to move it out of harm's way, but another part of her anticipated that he would try to close in on the queen with another one of his pawns. Either way, she had to be extra careful moving it around the board. Slowly, and quietly, the unknown presence from afar crept through the shrubberies and thickets of Yoyogi Park in a deliberate effort to remain concealed and out of sight. Katsumi's hand bag remained fixed in its line of vision, just waiting to be pilfered of its contents.

"Oh Ah don't doubt tha. Which makes me also wonder wha circumstances shaped him inta the jerk he became. At least he should be managable if we continue ta stand up ta him whenever he does act up. Bullies don't often know how ta deal with those who stand up ta them ya know?" Blaster said giggling along with Katsumi before he said "Ya seem ta know just wha ta say when it came ta helpin' me feel better about myself considerin' I was feelin' guilty for wantin' ta give tha jerk a piece of ma mind"
As soon as Katsumi moved her queen it seemed like Blaster was far from out of the woods. "Opportunities are right, Hirata-san. Looks like gettin' one up on ya isn't gonna be easy." Then Blaster grabbed the pawn in front of his king's rook and moved the previously unmoved piece forward two spaces planting it right next to the white queen.
Kima stared at the screen of her Xros Loader for a brief second wondering if she should take a chance by sneaking into the bushes and maybe releasing one of her other partners or if she should stay with Takoda and Blaster. Who knew if the hidden presence her partners warned her about was friendly or not but she couldn't exactly let out one of her other partners and expose Katsumi to digimon since she had never seen a digimon before. Biting her lip nervously she focused back on Katsumi and Blaster's game.

Hearing Suoh-san talk about the conditions that formed people like Moriya-san came as a surprise to Katsumi, who had initially concluded that he wasn't much for philosophical meanderings. But now that he mentioned it, she couldn't help but wonder about his situation at home. Was he truly mean because he wanted to be, or merely just acting out as a matter of attention-seeking? Perhaps she ought to experiment with her theories sometime. " I've always been a firm believer in the idea that an eye for an eye makes the entire world blind," Katsumi professed, " Moriya-san's bit off more than he could chew several times already. It's only a matter of time before that comes full circle for him." Speaking of that, it would appear as if Suoh-san had moved his king's rook pawn forward two squares, a decent effort to pin her queen down and keep it from growing too hostile as the middle game progressed. Had she blundered by capturing his knight? Katsumi didn't seem to think so, for she was prepared to extend as long as possible until she either found another opening, or managed to get Suoh-san to create one himself. Taking her queen between her fingertips, Katsumi pulled it down and to the left by just one square, positioning it next to her king's pawn and diagonally above one of her bishops. All this work he was making her put in to launch a proper offensive had proven stimulating for Katsumi, who could hardly wait to see how Suoh-san responded; as someone who claimed to be a novice at chess, he showed incredible command over his piece placement, and he wasn't making it easy to gain an advantage. But, just as he had pointed out, Katsumi was equally as determined to give it her all, as well. From the shrubberies in the distance, the unknown entity continued to gaze upon Katsumi and her play partner, watching keenly as she put her bag down against the concrete ground, likely so that she could better focus on the game at hand.

Upon hearing what Katsumi said next Blaster smiled before he replied "Ah may not claim ta be the wisest fella when it comes ta philosophy but those words of yours regardin' an eye for an eye are very wise indeed, Hirata-san. As for Moriya you are right about tha too seein' as karma can often be a fickle business."
As for the pieces on the board things were indeed still touch and go. Katsumi had moved her queen back next to her king's pawn with a bishop parked diagonally above. Looking at his pieces he noticed how difficult pulling himself out of this fix or even possibly pulling ahead was going to be tough considering Katsumi had much more experience. That didn't mean he wasn't having fun though.
Okay guess he was winging it once again it seemed as Blaster reached out and grabbed the king's bishop before moving it right in front of his king. At this point Takoda had gotten to his feet but he hadn't wondered off as he was still standing next to Kima. However his gaze was focused on Katsumi's bag as she set it on the ground. Unknown to the disguised Pumamon he wasn't the only entity keeping an eye on the game not to mention Katsumi's bag. Though in his holosuit form he had practically no access to his digimon abilities one thing he did have was raw instinct. That very instinct was screaming at him to be ready as if he felt it was a matter of time before the unknown figure came out of hiding.

By now, Katsumi could already tell that Suoh-san was feeling the pressure turn up with each and every move they made, with neither side willing to offer material in exchange for positional advantage. He pairs up his king's bishop with the queen's, creating an airtight defense. Any other player would have begun to see their pawns as a hindrance to the other pieces, but not Katsumi. She was determined to squeeze the most value out of her men before it was time to commit to making sacrifices. Demonstrating this philosophy, she took the initiative to grab her queen's knight pawn and move it forward two spaces, setting it to the left of her bishop. Of course, this would unveil an attack of opportunity for Suoh-san's bishop, but taking her pawn would simply expose himself to a counterattack from her other pawn. Was it worth the trade? Eventually, after a small length of time had passed between the two chess players, the foreign presence would gradually reveal itself by stepping cautiously out of the park thickets: it was no creature or entity, but a lone fox, cunning and curious over the unfolding scene. It steps closer, lifting its head and ears up in sporadic intervals. A wet nose sniffs the air, detecting the aroma of food coming from within Katsumi's bag. Its appearance wouldn't be an unusual sight, either, considering that foxes were widely regarded as omens of good fortune throughout Japan, but they also had a reputation for being tricksters, meaning it wasn't clear what it was going to do just yet. But Katsumi, having seen the animal approaching from where she sat, suddenly gasped aloud and restrained herself from squealing in delight. " Look, Suoh-san, its a fox!" she whispered loudly, carefully pointing in its direction to grab his attention. Not even Katsumi Hirata could withstand the irresistible sway of a cute animal when she saw one.

Blaster despite feeling the pressure brought on by Katsumi's moves the music loving digimon kept his cool. While when it came to chess strategy he still had a lot to learn but when it came to digimon combat he was much better in that strategy department even if digimon like Takoda or Chaytan were somewhat better at combat strategy then he was. Thinking about Chaytan brought a grin to his face as the Hawkmon inside Kima's Xros Loader was a being of logic and nearly unflappable but Blaster was sure Chaytan would likely be willing to try chess out for himself.
After Katsumi made her move bringing a queen's knight pawn forward two spaces where it was set to the left of her bishop. Yes he had attack opportunities still but was that the wisest move. If he did attack he couldn't just make such a decision willy nilly. So after thinking for some time he grabbed a queen's pawn that was sitting next to the bishop parked in front of his queen and moved that pawn forward one space making the pawns form a row of three.
The sound of the fox coming out of the thickets made both Kima and Takoda look in the direction of the little one and sighed with relief. Both Takoda and Kima observed the fox as the little one was sniffing the air. Maybe there was possibly some food nearby. All of Kima's partners were aware of kitsune myth and that foxes were regarded as omens of good fortune despite also having the reputations of being tricksters.
Blaster noticed how Katsumi was struggling to restrain herself before whispering loudly to him and he turned around observing the little fox before he whispered loudly back to her "A cute little one but maybe tha fox could be an indication tha good luck is comin' someone's way. Maybe botha us. What do ya think, Hirata-san."

Suoh-san had just finished moving the pawn closest to his queen's bishop forward one more space, forming an even wider bulwark against the White army's advance, before his attention had sufficiently been grabbed by the appearance of the curious fox. Reminded of its reputation for being a harbinger of prosperity, Katsumi couldn't stop herself from grinning ear to ear. " I would hope so! I prayed at the Kitaya Shrine earlier. Maybe this is an omen!" she exclaimed, reaching down to grab her bag so that she could summon her phone from it. She had to take at least one picture! Oh, but she should also make another move, too... A glint of mischief flickers behind the fox's yellow eyes as it captures a good, healthy look at the cellular device in Katsumi's hands, sniffing the air. It smelled peculiar, like melons. Perhaps it was edible? The critter draws closer to the teenage girl, keeping its body as low to the ground as possible in case anyone made a sudden movement. Ignorant of the fox's deeper wiles, Katsumi could hardly contain her delight as she frantically opened the camera application and held the device low to the ground, hoping to get a clean shot of the animal's approach. " It'll only take...just a couple...seconds..." Once it was within touching range, the fox paused, as if to consider its next actions, before suddenly clamping its jaws down over Katsumi's phone and bolting off in the direction from which it came! Katsumi shrieked in despair. The fox stole her phone!! It stole her damn phone!! What was she going to do?! Her parents will kill her if they ever find out about this!! " No!! Give me back my phone!!" Katsumi threw herself from the stone bench as she grabbed her belongings with the quickness of lightning, before entering as furious of a sprint as she could after the deceitful animal that stole her only means of communication with her mother and father. " Come baaaack!!" she cried out, drawing a few confused reactions from some onlookers going about their business. A careful eye would notice that she was headed in the direction of Meiji Shrine, where it was bound to be full of visitors. Did this count as a forfeit? It would certainly be a shameful way of losing a chess match, but considering what just happened, a smudge on her record was the least of Katsumi Hirata's worries.

The fox's curiosity seemed to overwhelm the small animal's natural instinctive fear even though Katsumi exclaimed in an excited manner and Blaster said "Ah have passed by tha shrine sometimes after school and it has always been a nice place for me ta occasionally visit." Blaster watched as Katsumi grabbed her bag to retrieve her phone from it. "If anyone needs a good omen Ah think ya do, Hirata-san." Blaster said with a smile.
Takoda had remained still observing the fox carefully taking note of how it was looking at the cell phone as well as sniffing the air. Apparently the phone had a scent to it that grabbed the fox's attention. If he was in his normal digimon form he would have been able to catch the mango scent on the air given he was a puma digimon and it wasn't uncommon for feline digimon to have sharp hearing, smell, or excellent eyesight.
Kima was slowly getting up and though Blaster had remained seated he nodded his general's way causing the teen girl to remain right where she was standing. The three of them watch Katsumi as she readied the phone to take a picture then lowered it towards the ground. Just then the fox proved to be more cunning than Katsumi thought as the fox snatched her phone before making a break for it.
After shrieking in despair at her phone's theft she bolted after the thieving fox. "Ah'll stay here, Kima, while ya and Takoda help Hirata-san chase down our furry friend."
As Kima and Takoda took off after Katsumi and the fox Kima said "Just how are we going to get this phone back? Sure you are the fastest Takoda but we can't just have your holosuit deactivated out here as we have to keep a low profile."
"She and the fox seem to be heading back in the direction of Meji Shrine. Now if only we could... of course that's it!" Takoda exclaimed and before Kima could ask he chose to elaborate "If you bring out Fuzz then he can burrow under the ground to catch up to the fox without being spotted and when he gets ahead of both Hirata-san and the fox he might be able to snag the stolen phone."
"Of course. Why didn't I think of that?" Kima said as she held out her Xros Loader and said "Upload Prairiemon!" From Kima's Xros Loader appeared a smaller than average Prairiemon that only came up to Kima's knees. Fortunately they were concealed by plant life so Fuzz wasn't visible to any human. "Fuzz, I'm sure you heard what happened so can you.."
"Mes dos the best I can, Kima." Fuzz said before smiling and burrowing into the ground at high speed. The small digimon listened carefully as he dug following Katsumi and the fox. Upon getting close to the shrine he dug up creating a small hole with his claws. Listening carefully the small digimon brought out his lasso. However his intentions were not to lasso the fox but the phone clenched in its teeth. Waiting patiently he twirled his lasso before tossing it up through the small hole as the fox passed the lasso hooking what he hoped was the phone before giving it a firm but gentle tug.

Katsumi screamed and yelled to no avail, as the filching fox continued to run away from her while she gave chase. Every so often, it would stop fleeing to look back at the human girl running hot on its tail, only to dart away once she got close enough. Apparently, they also liked to toy with people. Completely beyond the scope of Katsumi's awareness, another creature closed in on the fleeing fox, although the critter could sense the movements of its pursuer underground, and sought to evade both of its chasers in one go. Katsumi had stopped to catch her breath the moment Kima's companion opened a small hole in the dirt, aiming to throw a lasso out from inside the gap with the express intent of snatching the phone away from the fox's mouth. It would have succeeded, were it not for the fox's own agility and instincts, as they allowed it to anticipate the danger coming from below ground and simply barrel its way through before the rope could snag onto anything solid. Watching it dart off for the forest enclosure that surrounded Meiji Shrine, Katsumi had almost hesitated going in after the fox before the thought of her parents grounding her became too much for her to bear, leaving her anxiously traipsing in after the thieving animal as it continued to bob and weave its way through the shrubs and plant life. Attempting to go in after her would prove difficult at this point, as she was willing to climb over ledges and wade through bushes to make sure she didn't lose her sights on that fox. Katsumi panicked more and more the further she continued to venture inside, knowing that her very presence away from the shrine's established boundaries were breaking all kinds of rules and would likely get her kicked out if she were to be discovered. One could argue that it was difficult for her to think clearly in this situation—after all, a fox did just steal her phone—but the shrine caretakers weren't likely to be amused with her wandering around the complex without a chaperone, much less her parents. But she had to get her phone back, whatever it took. She could deal with the consequences of her reckless behavior later; it wouldn't be hard to form an alibi for her dirt-stained clothes.
Notes: The fox was too fast for the trap...

Kima and Takoda, whom had joined the pursuit, noticed the fox was showing how cheeky it was by only stopping for a moment only to sprint away in a manner that was clear that it was toying with Katsumi. While Katsumi was catching her breath Takoda nodded to Kima as the pair split in different directions intending to circle around to surround the fox.
Meanwhile Fuzz was aware his efforts were unsuccessful but the little guy was far from discouraged. The former desert dweller should of known better that the fox might be more clever than it appeared much like how Fuzz himself was often underestimated. Back to tunneling Fuzz went moving till he went ahead of the fox following the thieving critter into the shrine grounds.
When they weren't successful in cutting off the fox Kima and Takoda approached Katsumi. Takoda then said "If you want in that way I can help you. Mind you normally I don't sneak into places as a habit but with something expensive like that phone being stolen we have to make an exception." Takoda then cupped his hands and posed in a way that suggested he was planning on helping by hoisting her over.
Kima was, however, not certain about breaking in so she decided to head inside seperately from the official entrance. If she was lucky she could make it to them from that entrance. After Katsumi was in Takoda climbed his way in with cat like grace. Upon getting inside he caught up with Katsumi and said "Now let's catch up with our furry friend."
Meanwhile Kima had made her way to them without raising much fuss somehow and said "How are we going to catch the fox. Not only is it pretty clever but it isn't likely to drop the phone without maybe finding something else more tempting. Just what about that phone would convince a fox to even snatch it anyway?"

It took several minutes of trying to cross through the untamed portions of the park before Katsumi reached a ledge she could not ascend on her own. It didn't take very long for Blackhawk-san, one of Aiuchi-san's friends, to catch up to her, and even went as far as to offer her a boost up to elevated ground, to which the young teenage girl gladly accepted, as she was desperate to catch up to the thieving fox by any means necessary. It took Aiuchi-san some time to follow suit, but once she arrived to discuss a plan of action with the both of them, Katsumi took it upon her own shoulders to simply begin darting in the direction of the shrine's famous iris fields, panting with every breath she took as her legs burned from the strenuous activity they were being forced to exert. Let's just say that the girls at Track Club weren't liable to be impressed with Katsumi's middling athleticism any time soon. Nevertheless, she persisted onward, gritting her teeth in order to capture a second wind so that she could sprint even faster than she had been before. It certainly helped that she wasn't wearing her usual platforms, but this did nothing to help close the gap between herself and the fox that had possession of her phone. Passing by the garden teahouse, the forest became thicker as a pathway led deeper into it. Nearby, a signpost informed visitors that they were approaching Kiyomasa's Well, a local attraction that earned popularity among the Japanese for its supposed positive energies and healing properties. Peering into the distance, Katsumi could see the fox's head for the briefest of moments before it slipped under the cover of nature. " It's going towards Kiyomasa's Well," Katsumi said, clenching her hands into balled fists. " I need everyone to wait here, or else it'll just run away some more. We'll be chasing it for hours." Something about this animal kept reminding her of the prayer she had made at Kitaya Shrine, and if superstition had anything to do with this, then it could only mean that this was an ordeal meant exclusively for Katsumi. Aiuchi-san's question lurked at the fore of her mind, in the meantime. What about her phone was so appealing that a wild fox would try to take it?
