Things being left in lockers was the norm for a high school, whether it was love letters or letters of challenge or even left over lunches and bags from particularly lazy students. Yamada was not one of these students, she was not lazy, she never left anything behind and she had never once received a love letter let alone a letter of challenge. So it was rather surprising for her when opening her locker at the end of the day she found what appeared to be a large, black and white egg stuffed in there with her shoes.
It took her a minute to register just what was going on, at first she thought it must have been some kind of prank, but then she wondered just what was particularly funny about stuffing a large egg into someone's locker.
'How did it get there?' Yamada thought, 'No one else has the key but me...and maybe the teachers...someone could have stolen it...' She thought, 'Maybe someone lost it? Or put it in here for safekeeping?'
Yamada wondered if she should go get a teacher, though it would be rather hard to get them to believe her. She needed to bring the egg to them for evidence. Grabbing the egg she heaved it out of her locker. The egg was surprisingly heavy, it seemed to be filled with something.
'Maybe it's a real egg' Yamada thought, 'No it couldn't be,,,right?'
She placed the egg into her bag and set off for the teachers lounge. She hoped someone would be there, it was pretty late and the school was nearly deserted. Yamada had been in the library reading some books. She liked it at this time, it was quiet and peaceful, as she hoped the rest of her life would be.

As Mana ran through the school’s corridors in a rather quickly fashion, cursing her lack of memory all along the way. She had actually left both her D-3 and her D-Terminal on her locker before going to volleyball practice, and she was even going to exit school without them! Luckily, Ayaka’s memory worked just fine and that’s why she was now running to where her locker was. Thankfully the school was mostly empty and she could travel across it more or less freely.
After reaching her locker and retrieving the two devices, she was rather surprised at the beeping sound her digivice was making. That could only mean that there was another digimon in their school... maybe it was good, maybe it wasn't. Who knows.
“What do you say, Ayaka? Are you up to investigate this thing? A bad natured digimon could cause some serious trouble in here… so I guess that it’d be better to be safe than sorry?”
“I concur, miss Mana” the muffled voice of her partner’s in-training from could be heard from inside her backpack “I would really hate to engage a digimon in such a barbaric activity when we are so close to tea time, but I guess that your school’s safety is a little more important than that”
It seemed that the digimon was nearby the teacher’s lounge. She quickened her pace and tried to be alert in case danger lurked nearby, but calmed herself once she identified that the source of the beeps was a girl that was a little smaller than her. Maybe she could finally have a friend with a digimon that was the same age than her? That would be certainly fun!
“Oi!” the brown haired girl called when she was somewhat close to the stranger, trying to get her attention “Can I talk to you for a minute? I won’t bother you very much!”
She hoped that this strange girl wouldn’t react badly at her somewhat cheeky attempt to talk to her.
Tatsuya was filled with nostalgia as he walked through the corridors of Shibuya's School. He had studied there for a time when he was younger, but he didn't stay there for a long time, as it was usual for him to be moving every once in a while. He had recieved an e-mail from his father asking him how things were going, and also told him to go and speak to the principal, since it had its contacts within the university. However, that was no pleasure trip, since, as always, a purple furball had decided to come alongside him.
-Tatsuyaaaaa.... whewe awe weeee? -asked Dorimon, who had degenerated to his In-Training form to sneak up in the school inside Tatsuya's bag. -We are in my old school, Dorimon. Here I learned a few things and made some friends, but that was... almost five years ago! Maaan time slips by so fast! -the eighteen-year-old answered, looking at the corridors. It was as if nothing had changed, apart from obvious posters and warnings that were stuck on the walls.
However, it seemed that he would still have to speak before even getting to the principal's office. As he turned around the corner, he saw a familiar face talking to an unknown one. Now where had she seen here before...? Tatsuya scratched the back of his head, trying to remember. That was right! Now he did realize when had he met that girl. It was back at the park with Ryouta, wasn't it.
Dorimon was also quick to get his snout out of the bag. -I smwell Digimon, Tatsuya. But we know hew -he said. -Yeah, I know... -the Kazan answered, as he approached towards the two figures that were talking in the corridor. -Oi! Manaaaa! -Tatsuya greeted, walking towards her. As the other figure was unknown, he told Dorimon to stay hidden, convincing him by promising they would go eat "fetuccino" later at a restaurant. -How's it going? -he then turned to the other person -Hey, I'm Tatsuya Kazan, nice to meet ya -he said, tending his hand to the other girl.
Yamada nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of someone calling her. She turned around and saw a girl who was a little taller than her. Though she seemed to be friendly enough Yamada was still wary of her.
'What if she's just acting that way to get my guard down?' She thought, "What if she wants what's in my bag? What if I end up saying something bad and she hates me?'
"Umm...ah...uh...hi...hello..uh" Yamada stammered, she tried to run but her legs seemed to have stopped working. "You something for me need...NEED ME FOR SOMETHING?"
As she tried to greet the newcomer she noticed that her bag had begun to...move. Yamada realized that it must be the egg. She prayed with all her might that it did not mean that it would hatch right at this moment. Just when she thought things could not get any worse Yamada saw that they had been joined by a man who looked like he had left the school a long time ago. To make matters worse it looked like he wanted her to shake his hand.
"Um...uh...I...ah...well I was just...." Yamada was almost shaking with nervousness. She wouldn't be able to disappear into the crowd like she usually did in school. One person here was bad enough but now there were two. The egg almost seemed to react to the newcomer, it was shuffling around so much that Yamada could hear noises coming from her bag.
'Please, take me away,' Yamada thought to herself, 'Anywhere is better than here....'
As the girl turned around to greet Mana, she felt somewhat disappointed. She had recognized her when she was going out of some of the senior classes, so she actually one or two years older than her. A pity indeed, but that didn’t mean that they could be still friends, of course… although this girl seemed to be somewhat shy looking at the way she had answered to someone who was actually younger than her. She smiled warmly at the girl as she struggled with her words.
“Oh, I’m sorry if I’m bothering you… eep! Where are my manners? The name’s Tsumura Mana, but you can call me Mana if you want! Hopefully we can be friends, Sempai-san!”
She heard a familiar voice calling for her, and as she turned to see him, it was the guy she had meet at the park just a day ago. His name was Tatsuya, if she remembered it correctly.
“Hi, Tatsuya-san!” she greeted him, but repaired in that the guy seemed to be just a bit too old for school “I was here because I forgot some stuff here and I just got out from volleyball practice. Aren’t you a little too old to be here? Oh, don’t tell that have you brought Notfoxysan-san with you too? Ayaka will surely enjoy his company!”
The truth was that the little plant Digimon didn’t know if she found “Notfoxysan-san” to be a pleasant company. But whatever, maybe she would discover that today.
As the black haired girl continued her struggle to communicate, Mana tried to calm her down with a friendly smile.
“It’s fine if you don’t wanna talk to us, Sempai-san! But I’m sure we can help you out a little” she said, repairing in the fact that the girl hadn’t spoken about digimon yet. Well, to be frank, she hadn’t spoken about anything yet, but if the digivices had beeped and she now acted rather erratically, Mana guessed that she didn’t know about digimon’s yet. “Have you discovered the egg today? That’s excellent news! I can help you with it, if you want to!”
Yeah, now she was really cheeky, but this girl seemed to be too timid, so maybe she would react if she pushed her a little.
Mana also greeted Tatsuya by calling him "Tatsuya-san". Despite him not being used to the honorifics, he knew about them and was familiar with their use, so he disregarded the suffix without questioning its meaning. The other girl, who seemed two or three years older than Mana was on the verge of fainting, it seemed! He took a better look at her: black long hair fell over her back and face, brown eyes that were covered by her green glasses, avoiding eye contact.
Tatsuya chuclked slightly at the girl's shy behaviour. He crouched slightly, putting his hands on his knees, to be able to look at her without having to look down: that way, he would appear much less intimidating. As she mumbled, trying to find the correct words, the teen decided that it would be better to try and calm her down. -Hey there. You don't have to be afraid of me, ya know, but I understand it if you rather not talk to a stranger. That said, I'd like to know your name, so I can at least recognize you later -he said with a calming smile. Tatsuya was used to addresing shy people, and the best approach was usually to tell them to take it easy and that he meant no harm.
As Mana also tried to calm her down, she greeted Tatsuya, asking him if he had brought... -NotFoxywhat? -he said, stranged, but then he realized that she was talking about Dorumon. Wait, wait, wait! Did the other girl know something about Digimon? Was she familiar with them? If the answer was no, there could be trouble, deep trouble. Luckily, his Digivice started beeping. As he discretely took a peak, he saw three dots on the screen that were together.
With a sigh, he relaxed once again. It was safe to assume that the girl had a Digimon with her, or at least, its Digitama. -Well, I did bring him here, but he is much smaller now -he replied, tilting his head towards the bag on his back. -C'mon, buddy, you can come out now -he muttered, as he took the bag and held it in front of him. Almost instantly, the purple furball's snout was emerging from the depths of its "confinement". Tiny paws grabbed onto the borders, as his face became completely visible.
-Ne, Tatsuya, awe we thewe... Wait, humans! Let's fight! -Dorimon said, attempting to look menacing, but his baby-like manner of speech made him look cute instead. -Not now, Dorimon. Remember Mana? -he asked his partner, as the latter looked up. -Yup! She had wiewd plant-like Digimon -the In-Training said, probably referring to Ayaka in the process.
-Hey! That's not cool, Dorimon. Apologize! -Tatsuya scolded him, as Dorimon looked at Mana. -Kaaay. Soooowwyyyy -he said, not really convinced. As its big eyes glanced over the other girl, he couldn't recognize her. -You! Who awe you? -the Dorimon said, aggressive as always. Tatsuya let out a sigh as he addressed the same girl.
-Don't pay attention to him. He is usually kind of a prick... Wait, Mana, did you say egg? So she hasn't got a Digimon yet?
Bad news. If she thought all of them were like Dorimon, she might be too scared to even hatch his own!
Yamada's head was swimming with words, sempai, Mana, Tatsuya, egg, trouble, people, Digimon. These people might as well be speaking a different language to her. She wasn't sure what to make of all it. Things didn't get any better when the man produced what appeared to be a very life like talking plush toy (at least Yamada hoped it was a plush toy). Yamada backed slowly away from the...whatever it was in case it bit her. She wondered if they wanted the egg for some nefarious purpose, perhaps they would try and take it off her and sell it somewhere. Yamada decided it was best for her to play it safe and get to the teachers lounge as fast as she could.
"M-my name is Amami...Yamada Amami..." Yamada said as bravely as she could, "A-and I'm afraid that I have no idea what you are talking about. N-now IhavetogonowI'm..."
She wasn't able to finish that sentence however, because from within her bag ther was a the sound of something breaking. Yamada froze, she could feel something shuffling around in her bag. Sounds of something sniffing and growling came from within. It was obvious what had happened, the egg had hatched. For a few seconds she wondered if she could just drop the bag and run. However, there was a part of her that wanted to see just what was in the bag, Somehow, against what she thought was her best judgement she took the bag off her back and slowly opened it.
Pieces of smashed egg were scatteded around the confines of the bag, and nestled at the bottom as a small white blob with beady black eyes. It appeared to be gnawing on her bento, as if it was trying to get into it. When the light shined down upon it the creature looked up at Yamada with curiosity, then it went right back to trying to get into the box. After a few seconds it managed to get the lid open with its teeth. The contents of the bento spilled into the bag (luckily there wasn't very much left) and the creature dug in. Yamada stared at the strange...whatever it was, trying to think of something to say.
"My...my spare onigiri..." Was all she could manage
As Dorimon emerged from Tatsuya’s backpack, Mana could only smile at him on her most cutesy manner.
“Tatsuya-san, Notfoxysan-san’s so cute! Can I hug him? Pleaseeeee?” As Mana regarded the little mammal Digimon as if it were some kind of prey (albeit a huggable one instead of an eatable one), a strange pink water lily-onion hybrid took her cue and descended from the girl’s backpack.
“It is a pleasure to meet you again, Tatsuya-san… Dorumon-san” she obviously had heard the mon’s previous commentary about her and didn’t like it one bit, but chose to still treat him courteously, at least for now “And it is a pleasure to get acquainted to you, Yamada-san” she made a slight pause when she heard the sound of the egg cracking, and even Mana got out of her predahuggy instincts when she heard that sound, she peeked as Yamada opened it and saw one of the fluffiest digimons she knew.
“Oh, I totally know those from when I went to the Village of the Beginnings! Their species name is YukimiBotamon and they’re really cute! You’re indeed lucky, Yamada-san!” she was going to keep rambling about the little cute and fluffly white ball when Ayaka interrumpted her by clearing her throat.
“Excuse my partner’s antics, Yamada-san” she began again “Maybe you are confused right now but, but I suggest you to remain calm. Maybe this all seems to be a really strange happening, but if you permit me, I will explain what is happening to the best of my abilities. I hope you understand my posture”.
Wow. The moment Dorimon had came out of the back, the girl now seemed to be on the verge of fainting! Worried about her, the teen leaned slightly, as he addressed her in a caring tone. -Are you okay? Not feeling alright? -he asked her, as she introduced herself as Yamada Amami, though it was clear that she was too nervous to keep talking to them, probably due to the fact that she had seen his Digimon speak.
Mana quickly asked Tatsuya if she could hug Dorimon. The teen was about to say "no" because he could turn aggressive, but he thought it better... might as well be a good punishment for eating his dinner last night! -Yes, you can. He is warm and fuzzy, so hug him all you want, Mana! -he said with a smile, as he abandoned Dorimon to his own luck.
Dorimon, who remembered Mana from the park, wasn't in his Rookie form at that time, so most of the cold prick personality he usually had wouldn't show itself up that time. Instead, the little digimon talked to her. -What's a hwug? Can you eawt it? -the little furball asked the same way a child asks his mother about something he doesn't know.
Then, Ayaka descended from Mana's backpack, talking to the eighteen-year-old as politely as always. "It is a pleasure to meet you again, Tatsuya-san… Dorumon-san, and it is a pleasure to get acquainted to you, Yamada-san" -the plant Digimon said. Tatsuya bowed in return, trying to appear as polite, knowing she liked that. -The pleasure is mine, Ayaka-san. I hope everything is going alright for both you and Mana. Also, please spare my partner's words. He is in his In-Training stage, Dorimon, so his brain is similar to a baby's. -he spoke as best as he could, hoping to be enough to please Ayaka with his mannered speech, though he knew that, was Dorimon to be in his Rookie form, the insult would've been much worse and far more difficult to compensate.
It was then when they heard the sound of cracking inside Amami's bag... the Digitama had finally hatched. Mana quickly went to see the Digimon, which seemed to be a YukimiBotamon, a cute white furball that had eaten its partner's spare onigiri. Now Yamada did seem to be just about fainting, so Tatsuya moved to a position that would allow him to catch her, should she fall. As he watched the new-born, he talked to his new acquaintance. -You are lucky. He seems to be a really nice guy. See, that's what a digimon is. If you allow us, we could explain what this means... well, me and Ayaka, since Dorimon and Mana seem to be... busy, right now -Tatsuya said, thinking she would be hugging his partner at that moment.
Yamada was only half listening to the conversations around her. She was transfixed on the small white puffball now in her bag. It was a very quick eater, it had already finished off the onigiri and was now sniffing around the bag looking for something else to eat. Yamada had to admit Mana was right, it was very cute. The YukimiBotamon now looked up at her expectantly, as if wanted to be let out of the bag. Yamada, thinking it would be rather cruel to keep the poor thing in there, reached into her bag and gently grabbed it. She then let out a yelp in surprise, as the the Digimon was surprisingly cold to the touch. Yamada could swear she could hear the YukimiBoatamon chucking to itself as she raised it out of the bag.
Yamada put the bag down and stared at the little thing in her hand. It stared right back, almost as if it was appraising her. Yamada couldn't help but crack a smile at such a small and sweet looking thing acting so serious. It appeared to come to some sort of conclusion, giving Yamada a "you'll do" sort of look. Yamada surprised herself by laughing at this. It was only then when she realized that they were still in company.
"O-oh...I'm terribly sorry for ignoring you..." Yamada said, for some reason feeling a bit braver now. "Could you please explain to me what's going on?"
YukimiBoatamon was now looking at the two other digimon. Yamada could almost swear that the low humming sound it was making when it looked at them was almost like...growling.
Mana eyes lighted up when Tatsuya said it was okay for her to hug the little purplish digimon.
“Thank, you Tatsuya-san!” she said as she reached for “Notfoxysan” and cradled him on his arms, squeezing him gently.
“You’re so cute Notfoxysan-san! I’m so happy that you want to be hugged by me!” she said as she rubbed him gently behind his ears “My brother’s digimon loves when I do him this, maybe you’ll like it too?”
Meanwhile, Ayaka sighed at her partner’s behavior and regarded the newborn digimon quizzically. It seemed to have quite the personality, or at least to be rather protective from her partner.
“Well, the thing goes more or less like this, Yamada-san. You just got yourself a digimon partner and you should feel pretty fortunate for that. Maybe now you are asking yourself what is exactly a digimon... and it may sound pretty unrealistical, but we are sentient lifeforms from another world. And yes, me, the little animal that is currently in my partner's arms and your YukimiBotamon are digimon. So, maybe this will sound a little weird, but some of us for some reason or another are partnered with a human being, such a you, miss Mana or Tatsuya-san. There is a plethora of different digimon types, and maybe the devices that you will find alongside your partner’s cracked eggshell will help you find some of that things out” she then paused, letting all the things she had said sink “Now your destinies are intertwined, so you better take good care of it while she’s on her lower growth stages” she made a thoughtful expression for a second, as if she had forgotten something “But I think I will let Tatsuya-san explain that to you. I think humans are more adequate to explain growth stages to each other. If you please, Tatsuya-san?”.
OOC: Assuming Dorimon lets Mana hug him If I'm wrong, please say!
OOC: He doesn't know what it is so she does it, then he doesn't like it at first, but in the end he does find it comfy :3 As Dorimon found himself squeezed between the girls arms, he looked at his partner, who was laughing at the sight. As Mana hugged him, Dorimon managed to silently mouth two words that made the teen's laughter even greater. -Tatsuya.... Bastaaaaaaawd! -his "lips" formed those words as the thirteen year old girl kept cradling him on her arms. To be honest, however, it felt... warm.
However, the Dorimon gasped in surprise as she petted him behind his ears. The last time someone had done that, he had been pretty happy, but at that moment, he felt like something was missing. Something very important to him... The In-Training shivered for a bit, before a lone tear ran down his "cheek" with the Digimon not knowing why. In the end, he let himself be petted and hugged by the human.
In the meantime, Tatsuya noticed that, as the tiny, new born Digimon watched them, it let out a small growling sound. It reminded him of when he had first met his partner, as Dodomon, though he had been bitten when he tried to pick it up. Maybe they were somewhat similar? It was then when Ayaka started explaining what Digimon were, because... who else could describe it better than a Digimon itself?
After a brief summary on Digimon, partners, and all the important things to begin a new life as a Tamer, it was Tatsuya's turn to tell Yamada about the growth levels of digivolution. -Well, it's pretty easy actually. You see, there are up to 9 different levels of evolution for a digimon, though 2 of those 9 are slightly different. Newborns start at the "Fresh" stage, but then they can keep evolving to In-Training, Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, Mega, and Super-Mega, which would be considered almost god-like in power. For example, see my partner Dorimon over there? It's the purple furball... well, he is an In-Training now, but he can go up to Champion. Now, on how to make that evolution happen, it varies from partner to partner.
For example, I've heard many people's Fresh digimon had digivolved through eating food, so YukimiBotamon might grow up right now as we speak! For us, it was different. We had to defend ourselves from a Rookie Digimon, so Dodomon, my partner's Fresh form, digivolved to Dorimon to fight.
Now, there are two other levels: Armor Champion and Armor Ultimate. These can only be obtained by using a "Digimental" item, which represents either a virtue or a vice you posess. It's an easier form of Digivolution, but these forms are also weaker than their "natural" growth counterparts. -the teen explained, hoping he had made things clear enough for the novice Tamer.
"Another world..." Yamada whispered. Was this the thing she had been dreaming about, the adventure she secretly desired but was too afraid to have. The word 'destiny then came up, this little thing and her were destined to be together? It was like something out of a fantasy novel. While Yamada felt apprehensive at the thought of having to care for this thing, she couldn't help but feel excited at the thought of having a real friend. She listened closely to what Tatsuya was saying about growth stages, it certainly was quite daunting to imagine this little thing could possibly achieve god like power.
"That's...quite a lot to take in." Yamada said, "I'm not sure if I can handle all of that...But...I'll try my best. Thank you both very much for helping me. I'll try not to be a burden to either of you."
Yamada bowed, making sure to keep the little Digimon steady in her hand.
It was strange, Yamada could have simply given the little thing away and have been done with that. However here was the key to the life she had dreamed about, a friend who she could rely on and go on adventures with. She could start living the life she always read about in books. Plus, she felt an odd attachment to it, it was very cute after all. One thing Tatsuya said stuck in her mind.
"It can change if it eats. Hmm, maybe I'll pick up some food on the way home..." Yamada began
As soon as it heard the word "food" the YukimiBotamon leaped out of Yamada's hand and began sniffing the ground. Before Yamada could pick it back up again it darted off down the corridor. Yamada quickly grabbed her bag and chased after the fleeing creature.
"Wait, please!" Yamada shouted (though loud for her it was still lower than some people's speaking voice. "You don't know the way around the school!"
Mana was about to make a joke about the Spanish course she was taking at Dorimon’s “Basta” when the little and furry digimon shivered and subsequently shed a tear. Then the playfulness in her expression became distress as she squeezed the mon on a tightly and caring manner, acting even as if she were his mother.
“Are you alright, Notfoxysan-san? Did I hurt you?” she asked with concern as she tried to find out the source of the mon’s sadness.
Meanwhile, Tatsuya did a pretty good job at explaining how digimon grew to Yamada, the girl seemed to be struggling a bit at all this information, but she guessed that it was really a bit too much info to take it all in like the five minutes their speech had lasted.
“Do not mind it, Yamada-san” the pink digimon finally answered “You are definitely not a burden, and your situation is perfectly understandable, as everyone in here has already gone through that situation. If you ever have another question, do no doubt to…” her speech was brought to a premature end by the little YukimiBotamon darting off the hallway.
“I just do not get why all the children have to be so endearingly adventurous” she said mostly to herself “When I was a fresh digimon I didn’t give any problems to my partner… well, I guess plants are indeed superior on that case” she sighed to herself as she sat on the creature and the girl’s pursuit.
“Uh, Notfoxysan-san, do you want to go down of you prefer to chase that playful on my arms?” Mana asked to the still cradled Dorimon. After obliging to any of his requests, she too went on the trail of YukimiBotamon.
Tatsuya looked at his partner, slightly worried. He had never seen him crying, even in his baby stages, but he assumed that there was always a first time for everything. Mana, who was still cradling him on her arms, quickly asking if she was the culprit. -Are you alright, Notfoxysan-san? Did I hurt you? -she said, concerned about his well-being. The Dorimon didn't reply, though, but started to move nervously, as if trying to break free. Worrying that that could give the wrong impression, his Tamer quickly answered for him.
-No, Mana, it's not your fault, don't worry. Meanwhile, Yamada replied after his long speech with a simple phrase. -I'm not sure if I can handle all of that...But...I'll try my best. Thank you both very much for helping me. I'll try not to be a burden to either of you -she shyly stated. Tatsuya h attempted to pet the younger girl's head. -Oh, c'mon, stop thinking like that. You're not a burden to anyone! If you weren't, I wouldn't be here right, I assure you -the teen stated with a warm smile.
However, as Yamada planned on feeding the YukimiBotamon, the latter jumped from its Tamer's gentle hands and raced away, as if looking for something! Of course, this left the girl worried about its safety. Ayaka then boasted a little about how she hadn't give any problems to her partner, but Tatsuya didn't pay any attention to it. He quickly called out for his partner.
-Dorimon! Think you can search for it using its smell? -he asked his partner, as the latter finally jumped out of Mana's arms in front of him. -I think sow. Babies have a funny scent. Follow mwe! -he stated, as he started sniffing the place where the YukimiBotamon had landed to identify the scent. As he did it, he started moving quickly. Before following him, Tatsuya looked at Yamada.
-Don't worry, my Dorimon will find your partner for sure. Come with us! You two as well, Mana, Ayaka -he said as he left the clasroom, catching up with his partner. There was no time to lose: if the newly hatched digimon ran into trouble, there would be too much to explain to the people that might see the white furball.
