POLL: Weapons use in IC threads
|
Post by Sinn on Oct 22, 2014 0:43:56 GMT
Now as the title says, weapons used in IC threads, now be warned, this isn't like a ten year old kid running around with a katana or a commando weilding a minigun all the time, this is a when it makes sense and is applicable. (like you're at practice with a katana or that commando is in a job)
These threads will be staff regulated, and would need to be approved. For now, THEY WILL ONLY BE SOLO with a tag WEP. BEFORE making the thread contact a staff member and tell them what for, the idea and the reasoning. If it's acceptable, then you are free to post. Otherwise, do not post the weapon thread until told to do so.
I know this all seems kinda of hairbrained, but it's just a little test. To see how people like it and what could be improved. This could never happen so be prepared for that!
feel free to post down below!

For reference of the arguments against, see the following.
If weapons have any effectiveness in thread, they become an advantage based off a backstory matters criteria. This would mean that in order to be able to use weapons, characters would need to have it justified properly in their backstory, and those who don’t would then be at a disadvantage.
We’re a digimon site, and having tamers walking around with weapons would take away from the main point (dinosaur deathmatches).
Weapons where banned previously because every second character was walking around with a Kanata. While that wouldn’t be the intention of the rule, it wasn’t the first time too. It was still the end result.
Finally, we’re set in Japan. This isn’t America, weapon laws are a lot more restrictive in Japan. Something to bear in mind.
There’s probably others I forgot, but it’s 2am, so shh

That's not what I'm saying. It's not just give them out to anyone who asks. That's what "within reason" means, like I've previously discussed.
And I am aware of Japan's weapons laws, however, a point against that: Try telling a UN Rep they can't carry weapons in your country. That's a quick way to get the UN to not answer calls for help. Would be called "limiting the resources". Just an example of when someone might carry a gun in Japan.
Again, within reason.

Well, I'll state my opinion.
First of all, let's keep in mind that this is, as Sove said, a digimon site. Anyone who watched digimon will know that most weaponry (weaponry created with the specific intent to destroy digimon are the exception, but I doubt that is what is being allowed here) is pretty much useless against digimon above rookie, and even within rookie it's questionalble if they can produce any effect that is not driven from circumstances. As for fresh and in-training they're not only dependet (I think I just badly mispelled) but small and weak. They could be easily harmed anyway and hitting them with whatever can take some expertise most characters will not have (I'm guessing). So in terms if digimon vs weapons, digumon would be safe.
The real problem come in human relantionships. This is an Rp sight and interaction being replaced by mere violence can be catastrophic. Not to mention a character that has been proven to be very likeable (and liked, and popular) is Mana. This is due to her happy go-lucky attitude (correct me if I'm wrong) and overall loving nature. Adding guns will likely make characters even less accepting of each other, cutting in communication and therefore making them far less likeable. Imagine what it would be if nobody could like each other.
In human terms, guns have yet another downside. The advantage provided by any expertise from human to human is not only hard to measure, but would likely cut of several character development arcs due to the in ability act that is removed, as well as making those who have a weapon being able to harm other human beings in a far more...hum...dangerous? Way.
Back on the bright side, weaponry could be good to provide a certain amount of realism which is removed from certain areas, as well as opens up paths to far more differing and original characters than the ones many people are coming up with.
On the neutral side, and this is just a note, please remember this: weapons, on the sense of something that harm, are arledy usuable on the site. It's as simple as IC picking up a stick from the ground and hitting someone with it. So what is discussed here is not really wether or not weapons are allowed for usage. It's more about unlocking certain types of weaponry, and making it part of someone's character.
Now what's my solution to the presented problems? Quite simple, actually: mandatory codes of honour. I'll explain.
A character would pose an application for their usage of weapons. In it would be the kind of weapon, reasons for usage, and the rules fir it's IC usage. This code honor would be mandatory and would provide character development (how did the character learned it or come up with it, why does it follow the code, what will ut di upon the time they're code doesn't allow them to use the weapon, etc...), as well as provide restrictions on when you can use the weapon and on who, therefore avoiding mindlessly harming people and making your character unpresentable and providing back story, as well as a powerfull way to provide someone with the way to gain the character's trust, which is quite missing and possibly needed. It would also provide a connection to make a character reassemble others less, therefore starting a larger amount of character types and possible routes.
Anyway, these are my thoughts. I voted arledy, but I think it would be a good idea to implement a bit more than a "within reason". If you could expalin what you mean by that Sin, it might be clearer, because a discussion can turn pointless if you don't make your argument something concrete.

You guys keep going back to guns, there are more than just guns.
Guns are the last, absolute, maybe once if you articulate it right things.
But my point is things like knives, survival knives (Multitools) for example. You honestly would go into the DW full well knowing that you could be without food or water and you don't pack a multi tool? (which is sold in Japan, mind you) No flint and steel (The knife) he'll even a knife to cut rope. But you can't have those because you'll use them to attack a 20 ft dinosaur. (You wouldn't) That's my "within reason" and again, guns would be one VERY rare thing.
As for human weaponry not doing much to Digimon, prophet. You do understand that Weapons have been and are used against Digimon before right? The question is tamer specific, because humans have weapons and they do use them. Also, not effective? lol we don't attack a target that big with intermediate caliber weapons. Try a cruise missile. That would without a doubt seriously injure a mega, even kill an ultimate. But that's off topic, and not the point.
Tl;dr Stop going back to guns and swords.

To settle the gun argument, I went and did some googling. Literally no character on site would have a gun. Not only do you need to provide a legitimate reason, they can reject you at any point for basically any reason they see fit.
To progress the topic, Japan's knife laws are also quite strict. Not as strict as the UK where you'll get arrested for carrying one without a proper reason regardless of length, but certainly more strict than the US. I'm not certain on the age at which you can purchase a knife in Japan, but I imagine it's around 18. So from that, we could assume that unless kids are nicking kitchen knives, it's unlikely they'll have them either.
Ignoring the concept of firing military weapons at digimon (because it's not hugely relevant, and a discussion for another time), an assumption you've made is that characters going into the digiworld are prepared, which is arguably normally false. Most characters just end up there by accident most of the time, and even if you where prepared, a digimon can often cover most of the needs of a blade themselves.
Also, random points not relevant -> No character on the site is a UN rep, that points kinda moot And someone voted twice for yes, so the votes actually 4-6

First thing, when I said guns I ment any kinds of weapons. When I think about the word "weapons" the first word that comes to my head is "guns" so, I kinda made that confusion while writing. This means anything I might have said relating to "guns" I ment "weapons", like in general.
Anyway, I will repeat the part of my last post that seemed to be ignored. Weapons can hurt character development and relantions, two things that are essential to a proper Rp experience. There also is the human vs human advantage that is provided can be harmfull as well, especially given the rising number of character who DON`T start with their digimon partners.
As for knifes, I spoke about that before as well. That kind of weapon tends to be gathered in certain moments IC. It`s about at the level of finding a stick on the ground and trying to use it. There is a substancial difference when it comes to carrying a knife around normally. On that, I stick with my last paragraph and what Sove said.
Finnaly, I based my "digimon are generally unharmed by weaponry not designed to kill them" thingy on the series, where you see them get hit by hundreds of weapons and just outright ingore it. Of course, the only time I saw something like a nuke in digimon was during the first diaboromon appearance. But still, nuking a digimon would be impossible for msot chars, especially given almost all of them are children or teens.

Researched it myself. You're right about the knife part, buuuuut the UN part is the same as America. So half right.
Japan can turn them away, as that is their right as a host nation but that also is violation of SOFA (Status of Force Agreement), which is judicial and security compromises on both ends. Pretty much: "We're bringing assets and we will do our means to protect those assets." denial of that means complete denial of any service, aid included. And in the event something else happens, be it a natural disaster or else, SOFA is pretty clear on it.
UN doesn't really follow SOFA, but say something happens on a global scale and they come knocking. You have the right to deny them, but they will make it so you wish you hadn't. More so that UN = Pretty much America/UK.
And there is one UN rep char, who's been UN for almost two years now. xD
--------------------------------
As to Prophet, 1. Weapons don't seem to affect character development in development of other stories that use them, so moot point.
2. What.
3. This isn't the series, this is AU.
3. As for launching a nuke because "Most are children/teens".... What.
But! Sove makes a good point, and I'll agree with it.
