DFRP Digital World Overhaul (Because I'm bored and V5)

Post by .\\RʘNǂИ//. on Jan 6, 2014 21:18:40 GMT
Why? Because no-one really knows what it's supposed to look like. In DFRP, at least.
In this thread, I shall give my suggestions as to what I'd like the Digital World of DFRP to look like, from its physical existence, to its regions and everything else I can think of before I get lazy. (There's also quite a bit of lore in here, btw.) So, let's begin.
So, my idea for the most basic structure of the Digital World is to have the whole thing in a virtual "dome", with the world inside it as three layers: (in descending order) the Empyrean Skies, the Overworld and the Dark Area. Then the space between these "lands" and the "Dome" is the "Void". Lastly, outside the Dome, we have "Null Space", which is a scary place that may also be called "Exile", to sound dramatic, or even the "Phantom Zone" (jk).
The Overworld
The overworld is the largest level of the Digital World whereon almost all of it is located. It contains the main continent, the "Great Ocean" and the "Verge Gates" (which I'll talk about later). At the very center of the Overworld - somewhere beneath the Digital Core - is the "Code Core", which I will also talk about later. The edge of the Overworld is the literal "edge of the world", and it's perfectly possibly to fall off to your doom - this area is called the "verge". There where the ocean cascades over the Verge is called the "Everfalls". Many gigantic water falls cascade over the Verge where the Great Ocean meets the edge of the world. Inside the Overworld are the "Great Caverns", which are a massive cave system beneath the central continent that ultimately leads down to the Dark Area. The majour central continent of the Overworld is known as "Algorithm". A smaller continent rests on the southwest edge of the Verge; this desolate land is known as "Quibit".
The Empyrean Skies
The Empyrean Skies consists of a large floating continent high above the Overworld, as well as a multitude of floating islands surrounding it. At the highest point of the Empyrean Skies - effectively the highest point of the Digital World outside the Void - is the Origin of Light. Aside from being the core of Yggdrasil, the Origin is the central Verge Gate, suspended at the "top end" of the world. The Origin is also rumoured to be connected to Fanglongmon, the Sovereign of Sovereigns (Yggdrasil's Digimon form, or legendary right hand, perhaps?). The main landmass of the Empyrean Skies is known as "Avalon".
The Dark Area
The Dark Area is the terrifying "hell" region of the Digital World. Unlike in the current DFRP geography, the Dark Area in my version is not a separate continent, but a separate layer of the world located beneath the Overworld. It consists of a large floating continent beneath the Overworld, as well as many floating islands that surround it. A large marsh and dark sea is found on this main continent. Connecting the Great Caverns to the main land mass of the Dark Area is a massive (and incredibly perilous) spiral staircase suspended between the Overworld and the Dark Area. Being beneath the Overworld, the Dark Area only gets sunlight when it's night time above. However, due to a massive fog bank at the bottom of the Dome (through which the sun passes), very little of this sunlight actually reaches the Dark Area, so it effectively remains drowned in perpetual darkness. At the bottom-most point of the Dark Area is the Core of Darkness. Inside, many evils are thought to reside. Possibly the most powerful of these is Ogudomon, who has been locked in the structure for nearly an eternity, waiting to escape to take vengeance upon the world that imprisoned it. So, in many ways, the Dark Area is the inverted image of the Empyrean Skies. The main landmass of the Dark Area is known as "Tartarus".
The Dome, the Sun and the Constellations
The Dome is an indestructible, perfectly spherical shell surrounding the Digital World. The Dome is the Division between the "true" Digital World and the bizarre "Null Space" region. The Dome has three other notable aspects within the Digital World: the sun, the Constellations and the "Dome Current" (the latter will be discussed separately). The sun of the Digital World is an extremely radiant semi-sphere embedded in the inner surface of the Dome. It encircles the Digital World in an east-to-west direction over the Overworld and Empyrean Skies, and in a west-to-east direction beneath the Dark Area and the underside of the Overworld. The Constellations are an immense intricate circuit-board pattern that covers the entire inner surface of the Dome. The Constellations are the Digital World's equivalent of stars, as they glow and twinkle like stars at night (the circuit nodes can even be interpreted as stars themselves). They are also visible during the day, however, although their glow is then drowned by the sun, and they instead appear as a circuit-board pattern in the sky, and of a lighter shade than the sky. Near the edge of the Dome, the shell contorts gravity and a zero-gravity effect is established.
The Dome Current and the Mist
The Dome Current is a powerful pulling force that follows the same path as the sun, encircling the Digital World. The Mist is the result of water falling from the Overworld and the Dark Area being pulled along by the Dome Current. This creates a massive fog bank along the bottom edge of the Dome, which blocks out much of the sun when it passed beneath the Dark Area, rendering it *dark*. Where the Mist reaches the midpoint of the Dome (at the eastern edge because of the direction of the Dome Current), gravity causes the vapours to condense into clouds (at least SOME physics still need to apply here and there, right?), which then pass over the Digital World from east to west (thus returning the water that had fallen from the Overworld back to the Overworld). The winds resulting from this movement are the Eastern Winds. In the Void, the Dome Current makes orbital travel near the Dome edge very challenging. At the northmost and southmost ends of the Dome, the Dome Current creates gigantic vertical cyclones on the Dome edge - these cyclones also have "eyes" at the exact north- and southmost points of the Dome Edge, which are the only places along the edge of the Dome where the Dome Current is absent.
The Void, "Space", the Ring and the Moons
The Void is the space wherein the Digital World's landmasses float. Most generally, it refers to the area of emptiness outside the reach of these landmasses, between the landmasses and the Dome edge. In this area, the atmosphere becomes very thin and even space-like (an effect which is enhanced by the zero-gravity near the Dome edge). This is effectively the Digital World "near outer space" and is thousands of miles across (the "maps" aren't completely in scale, in this regard). Aside from the sun and the Mist - which have already been discussed - three other notable structures are found in the Void. Probably the more prominent is the Ring, which is a gigantic and colourful series of Saturn-like rings of gas that encircles the landmasses of the Digital World. The Ring is almost always observable from every point of the Digital World. The ring seemed to be locked in orbit with the sun, and is always at right angles to the line between the sun's present location and the very middle of the Digital World. This means that, at exactly midday and midnight, the Ring is exactly aligned with the Overworld. At this point, it's inner edges seem to caress the Verge (although the ring is always very close to the northern- and southernmost edges of the Overworld). The outer edges of the Ring are always somewhat distorted as the Dome Current tries to pull the gasses along with it. Finally, we have the moons. This consists of one large moon - which also boasts a "lunar colony"-themed settlement - and the smaller moon which orbits the larger moon. The larger moon is normally simply referred to as "the moon" when speaking according to destination or location, while the smaller moon is generally ignored in this regard. The larger moon also has its own gravity, irrespective of that of the rest of the Digital World, being close to the Dome edge. The moons orbit the Digital World within the Void along a path similar to the sun, but somewhat diagonal.
Null Space
Lastly there's Null Space, which is the dimensionally messed up area outside the Dome. From Null space, the whole Dome's outer edge seemed to be a flat, black surface (like a wall), despite being spherical in reality. Another very weird property of Null Space is that time flows irregularly, or not at all, when compared to time on the inside of the Dome. There is also no natural light in Null Space, nor gravity. It is also called "Exile", and legend has it this is where the most evil over-powered Digimon were banished by the god Digimon (or even Yggdrasil itself) after being defeated. The only two rumoured entrances to Null Space from inside the Dome it at the centre of the "eyes" of the northern and southern Dome-edge cyclones. However, why in the hell would you wanna go here!??
Here I'll be listing all the regions and areas currently present in DFRP, along with the *new* regions and areas I would like to suggest. These new regions and areas are in BLUE and have asterixes (these thingums: *).
Also, an important (to me) suggestion about the regions: MAP. I would be more than happy to make this map myself. I think it’s important that we know which areas correct to which, you know? EDIT: I will make a proper map tomorrow. It will include elements of both the maps below and MEIP's map in the DATS thread.
1) The Digital Core
Network Plains
Trailmon Terminal
Terminus City
Infinity Coliseum
*The Undercity
A labyrinthine underground network of sewers, basements and ancient tunnels that stretch for miles beneath Terminus City. Many illegal activities allegedly take place along the many corridors and underground waterways of the Undercity. The Undercity eventually leads into the fabled Great Caverns of the Overworld.
*The Code Core (Beam Nexus)
Beneath Terminus - in the exact center of the Overworld - lies the Code Core, a gigantic crystal that acts as a nexus between the beams, including that ironically created by the placements of the Origin of Light and the Dark Core. The crystal was discovered by an ancient Digimon civilization who proceeded to construct a gigantic temple complex around the Code Core. Today, the inner sanctum of the temple - the space around the Code Core - houses an assortment of equipment and powerful machinery as scientists of the Digital World struggle to unlock the secrets of the Code Core. It's believe by many that use of the Code Core can make one omnipotent ruler of the Digital World. Problem is, no one has any idea how to use it. So, for now, it merely serves as a source of perplexion and a giant eye-candy.
*The Great Caverns
Far beneath Terminus lies the fabled Great Caverns, the massive hollow at the centre of the Overworld. This large series of interconnected cave systems and mile-wide caverns is home to many underground Digimon, as well as enormous mines run by mining companies within Terminus. At its centre, however (about a hundred feet beneath the Code Core) begins the terrifying Hell's Stairway, which few who would prefer to keep their sanity would step near.
*Terminus City Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. The Terminus Way Station is located in the centre of a plaza near the middle of the city, and at the geographical centre of the Overworld.
2) The Eastern Timberlands
Mainframe Hills
Server Woods
The Tyrant's Labyrinth
Mansion of Tears
The Village of Beginnings
Spartan Training Grounds
*Village of Beginnings Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. The Way Stations of the Eastern Timberlands is located in a quaint forest clearing at the entrance to the Village of Beginnings.
3) The Southern Tropics
Cipher Jungle
Binary Archipelago
Whitewater City
Caritas
(The Macro Ocean is moved to "The Great Ocean")
(The Everfalls is moved to "The Verge", split in four, and fused with the appropriate areas)
*Whitewater Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. Much like the Terminus Way Station, that of Whitewater is located in a large public plaza.
4) The Western Flatlands
Kolibyte Oasis
Folder Desert
Rustport Town
Ancient Ruins
Hardware Den
Valley of Dragons
*Rustport Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. The Rustport Way Station is located just outside the (ruins of) the town.
5) Northern Prominence
Spyware Caverns
Desolate Tundra
Snowflake Village
Terabyte Mountain
Frozen Mausoleum
*Snowflake Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. The Way Station of Snowflake Village is located at the edge of the settlement's enclave.
6) *The Great Ocean
The great Ocean is the massive expanse of water that encircles the Continent of Algorithm and pours over the Verge as the Everfalls.
The Macro Ocean
*The Frozen Sea & Isles of Ice
The Frozen Sea is a bitterly cold maze of islands and icebergs between the northern shore of Northern Prominence and the Northern Verge of the Overworld. It is a well known home of large population of Seadramon and related Digimon. There is a small inuit-like settlement in a frozen bay on the north shore the largest central island called Frost Chip.
*Isles of the Sun (Western Isles)
The Isles of the Sun are an archipelago of hot, desert-like islands in the western ocean. Although they may seem somewhat desolate, the islands have remarkably pleasant beaches and large coral reefs off shore. A small settlement called "Sunspot" is located on the edge of a bay on the isles.
*Isles of the Moon (Eastern Isles)
The Isles of the Moon are cold, wet and rocky islands located in the eastern ocean. Vicious storms are common around these islands, and many shipwrecks dot the rocky coast. The islands are, however, known for their crisp winter nights. A small fishing village called "Crescent Bay" is located in a relatively safe bay of the islands.
*The Isles of Fire
This island arc south of Algorithm is a lush, tropical jungle environment. These islands have not seen much civilization, though, due to the perils of the many large volcanoes that dot the archipelago. In the past, a massive volcanic eruption from the largest of the Isles of Fire blanketed the southwestern continent of Qubit in ash as the volcanic clouds were carried west by the Eastern Winds. There is one populace settlement on the Isles of Fire, though. On the northwest shore of the northern most island lies the tropical village of Bios, on a beach-covered bay overlooking the Binary Archipelago. The native inhabitants of the Isles of Fire are known for their... savage ways, however, so caution is advised when visiting this tropical paradise.
*KingWhamon (sub-board under "The Giants")
*West Isles Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. This Way Station is located in the settlement of Sunspot.
*East Isles Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. This Way Station is located in the settlement of Crescent Bay.
7) *The Verge (Aka "Farlands")
The Verge is the literal edge of the world (well, the Overworld, at least). The World seems to end in a sheer drop, where the earth just falls away into the void. There are many islands dotting the Verge, but just as plentifully the Great Ocean cascades over the Verge as the humbling Everfalls. And of course, the Verge is home to the twelve enigmatic Verge Gates.
*Northern Verge
The Northern edge of the Verge lies beyond the labyrinth that is the Frozen Sea. This area holds the Gates of Ebonwumon, the Black Tortoise of the North. These Gates are - from west to east - the Gates of the Pig, the Rat and the Ox. The Gates are gigantic, round stone portals, each with a huge statue of its reigning sovereign on its keystone, and and its associated animal Digimon (Deva) carved into a stone platform before it. They are also located precariously on the very edge of the Verge. Each of the northern Gates are located on its own island on the verge, the most perilous of which is the gate of the Ox, whose island extends out over the Void. Strangely, the bitter cold of the Frozen Sea stops short of the Northern Edge, and instead these islands are covered in mossy woods, and otherwise bare black rock.
*Eastern Verge
The Eastern edge of the Verge lies beyond the Isles of the Moon. This area holds the Gates of Azulongmon, Azure Dragon of the East. These Gates are - from north to south - the Gates of the Tiger, the Rabbit and the Dragon. The Gates are gigantic, round stone portals, each with a huge statue of its reigning sovereign on its keystone, and and its associated animal Digimon (Deva) carved into a stone platform before it. They are also located precariously on the very edge of the Verge. The Gates of the Tiger and Dragon are located on their own Verge-side islands - that of the Dragon actually being a tiny, uninhabited continent - while the Gate of the Rabbit is located on a floating island suspended above the void that has, over time, broken off from the Overworld. Getting onto this floating island is only possible by air, as the ocean also ends just before the island, so a bridge could not even be built. All of these islands are covered with short, lush grass.
*Southern Verge
The Southern edge of the Verge lies beyond the Binary Archipelago of the Southern Tropics. This area holds the Gates of Zhuqiaomon, Vermilion Bird of the South. These Gates are - from east to west - the Gates of the Snake, the Horse and the Sheep. The Gates are gigantic, round stone portals, each with a huge statue of its reigning sovereign on its keystone, and and its associated animal Digimon (Deva) carved into a stone platform before it. They are also located precariously on the very edge of the Verge. The lands of the Southern Edge of the Verge are covered in desolate, scorched desert. The Gates of the Snake and Horse are located on their own islands, while the Gate of the Sheep can only be accessed from the small Southwestern continent of Qubit. Even this is extremely difficult, as it is located on its own floating island beyond a maze of floating rock that has broken off from the edge of the Overworld. The southern part of the small continent of Quibit seems as though it was once flat land, but it's since been broken by an intricate labyrinth of crevices and massive cracks in its barren surface, eventually leading to the floating isles that have broken off of the Overworld at the Gate of the Sheep.
*Western Verge
The Western edge of the Verge lies beyond the Isles of the Sun. This area holds the Gates of Baihumon, White Tiger of the West. These Gates are - from south to north - the Gates of the Monkey, the Rooster and the Dog. The Gates are gigantic, round stone portals, each with a huge statue of its reigning sovereign on its keystone, and and its associated animal Digimon (Deva) carved into a stone platform before it. They are also located precariously on the very edge of the Verge. The gates of the Monkey and Rooster are located on the small, desolate Southwestern continent of Qubit, while the Gate of the Dog is located on its own island. All these lands are marked with high mountain ranges - where not interrupted by the Everfalls where the sea cascades off the Verge - that must first be crossed in order to reach the Gates on the other side. These mountains are enormously high and boast treacherous cliffs and passes (slipping off the western cliffs may easily land you a tumble into the Void). The higher mountains are even covered in snow and ice. The northern part of Quibit holds the greatest of the Western Verge's mountains. These mountains are enormous, and may well be the tallest mountain range in the Digital World. The higher points of these mountains are drowned in snow and ice, and catastrophic avalanches and even rock-slides are not uncommon. Aside from the snow, this part of Quibit is also barren - aside from the snow - and made of hard, dark rock.
*The Quibit Ruins
The small southwestern continent of Qubit wasn't always a desolate, uninhabitable wasteland, as is testament by the ruins of the massive city of Qubit, which was once the largest city off the coast of the continent of Algorithm, and the second largest city of the Digital World. Quibit was also the closest Digimon civilisation had ever come to conquering the desolate Farlands. Today, this city is dead, its crumbling buildings - once of architectural glory - no more than dark-grey skeletons. The very streets and soil of the ruined city are dark-grey from the dust of the city stone, as if covered in the ash of scorched bones. The ruins of a Way Station are found in the Quibit Ruins as well, but this hasn't functions for millennia.
(No Way Stations)
8 ) The Empyrean Skies
Avalon Fields
Springs of Life
The City of Luminas
Palace of the Fallen Champions
*Ceresmon (sub-board under "The Giants")
*Luminas Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. The Way Station of Luminas is located in a large city plaza which doubles as beautiful public gardens.
The Origin of Light
9) The Dark Area
*Hell's Staricase
The only way to enter the Dark Area without using the Way Stations of flying over the edge of the Verge and into the shadow of the Overworld, is by means of a staircase. This large spiral staircase extends from the Great Caverns down onto the mainland of the Dark Area. The stairs are wide, up to ten meters at places (where it hasn't broken), but it extremely perilous. The stairway is of a black stone that has - here and there - eroded over time, rendering some parts of the stairway mercilessly narrow or even completely missing for a few meters. The stairs can even be slippery, wet from moisture seeping from the underside of the Overworld. It also boast no railings, and the only place a tumble off the edge is impossible is where the stairway digs through the stone of the Overworld's underside. The stairs are held in place by column of black stone that runs down its centre. The stairs - including the column - stretch for miles up from the Dark Area's mainland to enter the Overworld's lower point at a massive stalactite protruding for miles from the Overworld's core. The inside of this rock is also hollow, so a tumble to death in this cavern (which so happens is the deepest part of the Great Caverns) is also possible.
Sea of Blood
The Forsaken Wasteland
Fragment Village
Grotto of Sorrow
Cliffs of Chaos
*Fragment Way Station
The Way Stations are portals located all over the Digital World that allow instant travel between them. It consists of a platforms inscribed with the Ruins of the Beams. It is unclear who created the Way Stations, but their purpose is most helpful. Just outside Fragment Village is a small cave, wherein is located the only Way Station in the Dark Area.
The Core of Darkness
10) *The Upper Void (Space)
The uppermost reaches of the Digital World, above the atmosphere and in the zero-gravity environment nearing the edge of the Dome, exist some of this world' strangest Digimon, as well as some of its strangest locations. During parts of each day, the Ring passes over these locations, resulting in an intriguing display of colourful clouds for those locations.
*The Moon
The Digital World's moon is much like that of Earth, albeit much much smaller, as well as having a small moon of its own (which would be impossible in the real world).
*Lunar City and the Lunar Way Station
Lunar City is a futuristic outer-space habitat consisting of multiple glass-domed buildings and metal tubed connecting them. The "colony" boasts its own Way Station, which was constructed by Terminus scientists who wished for travel into the Upper Void without the need to construct space-faring machinery on the Overworld first. The Way Station they created is unique in being fully independent from the Beams that power the other Way Stations, instead utilizing technology developed from research into the Code Core. Lunar City also has a space station with a docking filled with space-faring vehicles.
*Deep Orbit
The empty reaches of the Upper Void is home to a multitude of asteroids and comets, as well as other mysterious "deep space" objects. Empty space can also be a remarkably dangerous location...
*Galacticmon (sub-board under "The Giants")
11) The Giants
Eldoradimon (Giant of Land; not region specific)
*Ceresmon (Giant of Air)
Ceresmon is the gigantic, monstrous bird Digimon that roams the skies above the Overworld. The massive creature carries on its back the "Karpos Hulē" (Καρπός Ὕλη? lit. "Fruit Forest"), a forest bearing the Digital World's greatest sweets and famous fruits. With a body composed of rocks and rich, fertile soil, Ceresmon's soaring form is definitely the epitome of an island floating in the sky. Sitting on the head of Ceresmon is "Ceresmon Medium", which serves as its true form. Ceresmon - as this "true" form - rules over this flying island.
*KingWhamon (Giant of Sea)
There is a large island in the Great Ocean that has the peculiar (and geographically irksome) property of movement. This island is actually the back of the gigantic marine Digimon KingWhamon. KingWhamon can move at incredible speeds, despite the extremely heavy load of the mountainous environment on its back, and manages to do so - remarkably - without disturbing the island. The island itself is home to a menagerie of wildlife, including a thick forest and many Digimon that call this Digimon home.
*Galacticmon (Giant of Space)
Once a mighty tyrant of outer space, Galacticmon has since lost interest in wreaking havoc and instead explores the reaches of the Void. This massive Digimon is the result of a symbiotic mutant Digimon merging with a human space station, and so retains the properties of a space station. Some scientists use Galacticmon as a deep-space research hub, while other space explorers simply use Galacticmon as a docking hub. Some, even, have taken up permanent residence inside this massive Digimon's space-faring hull. However, should Galacticmon feel overused, it will not hesitate to become aggressive.
The Beams are probably one of the most mysterious aspects of the Digital World. They appear to be invisible energy fields in the forms of "lines" that link the various Verge Gates across the Digital World.
What are the Verge Gates?
The twelve Verge Gates are gigantic, round stone portals, each with a huge statue of its reigning sovereign on its keystone, and and its associated animal Digimon (Deva) carved into a stone platform before it. They encircle the Digital world on its "equator" at the very edge of the Overworld. These twelve are also located precariously on the very edge of the Verge. Each pair of opposite Verge Gates creates a "Beam" between them (which totals 6 Beams).
The two Core Gates, however, are different. They are located exactly as far from the center of the Digital World as the other twelve Verge Gates, except that they aren't on the Digital World's "equator", but rather at its "poles" at the very top and bottom or the world (yet still a couple of thousand miles from the inner edge of the Dome, as with the other twelve Verge Gates). These two "Core Gates" are the Origin of Light and the Dark Core (the latter of which may be considered an "anti-Yggdrasil"). The two Core Gates create a seventh Beam (shown as a vertical red line on the image) that passes right through the centre of the plain created by the other six beams at a right angle (as shown in the image).
So what in the heck are the Verge Gates?
No one knows. That's the charm of them. The twelve Verge Gates appear to be some kind of portals, but they don't do anything or lead to anywhere (yet??). However, there seems to be incredible power about the Verge Gates, and understanding them may be the key to understanding the nature of the Digital World itself.
Now yeah, each of the 12 Verge Gates has an associated Deva. This is just a bit of lore, though, and the Deva Digimon probably have absolutely nothing to do with the Gates in reality. It's just symbolic. Chill.
Okay, so what are the Beams?
The Beams are intangible energy fields that run between Gates located at opposite ends of the Digital World. They may be aqueducts of Digital information, the threads that hold the Digital World together, or even dimensional paths of some kind (highways between the Gates) - most likely all of those are the case.
The Gates have two nifty uses: teleportation and transportation.
All nine Way Stations (minus the tenth Lunar Way Station (the one that cheated)) are located on a Beam (four on the Rooster-Rabbit Beam; two on the Horse-Rat Beam; three on the Central ("Dark-Light") Beam). So, somehow the Way Stations are able to tap into the energy flux of the Beams to transport an individual to any other Way Station at any other point on the Beams.
As for navigation, it should be noted that the Digital World has no true "north" or "south" because it's not a planet with a magnetic field (North and South were simply determined from East and West, which were in turn determined by the direction in which the sun moves across the Digital World's sky). However, I propose that the Digital World have its own compasses. A compass created on a Beam, will always point in a direction parallel to that of the Beam on which it was created, you dig? So north-pointing compasses would have to be created on the Horse-Rat (south-north) Beam. However, a compass created at a Verge Gate will always point in the direction of that Verge Gate.
Another way the Beams can be used for navigation is that things perhaps tend to lean vaguely in the direction of the nearest Verge Gate if on the path of a Beam.
The Code Core
The Code Core is the massive crystal located at the very center of the Digital World, precisely between the 12 Verge Gates, and directly in the middle of the distance between the Origin of Light and the Dark Core. In other words, all seven Beams pass directly through it. It is the nexus of the Beams.
It is therefore incredibly powerful and extremely mysterious.
At the Code Core, Beam compasses fail to function correctly, instead pointing at the Crystal. Anything that uses/stores energy also becomes supercharged in its presence - for example, a Digimon will become fully healed if near the Code Core.
The Code Core is, most simply put, an infinite information storage device. It caries inside it all the information of all the beings/objects/etc. in and all events that have ever, are and will ever transpire in the Digital World. More mysteriously, the same energy within the Code Core is responsible for creating and sustaining the portals between the Physical and Digital Worlds.
And now, for the last super weird note regarding the Code Core, it has an opposite. An exact opposite located at the exact opposite end of the Digital Realm. But wait, the Code Core is located at the very center of the Digital World, so how can it have an opposite point?? Well, that's what Null Space is for. As said, Null Space (the great empty expanse outside the Dome) is spatially fuqed. It's not impossible that at a certain point in Null Space, the outer edge of the Dome becomes the inner edge of Null Space's Dome, in which case it'll have a central point.
This opposite Code Core is called the "Dark Star" and is the subject of a plot I'd like to suggest later. It is almost exactly like the Code Core, except very few people know it exists (and even then they're not sure, or the knowledge is based off potentially dead-end research into the Code Core) and it has a more... sinister purpose... somehow.
Okay, so here's my suggestion for HOW all this comes into being:
-Firstly, all of this already exists*, but everything beyond the Algorithm, the main continent (with the exception of the Dark Area and the Empyrean Skies) are currently inaccessible due to an invisible "wall"/"forcefield" simply called "The Field", which marks the current edge of our game-able world. This also means we need to disregard two things, though: The Everfalls and the fact that there's a sea between Algorithm and the Dark Area (both of these are still "true", but heavily retconned, as I will explain shortly). We also have to assume that all these new location ON Algorithm HAVE EXISTED for all this time, but no one really paid attention to them because "meh".
*This "no, it's really always been like that" kinda approach is called "retconning", wherein the real-world creators of a fictional setting alter things in that fictional setting without the characters in said fictional setting being aware that anything has changed because they too are fictional. Yes, we (the players) will be aware that a lot of things are very different, but this knowledge is irrelevant because to the characters it's all always just been like this. The world before the change (what things *were* like) is erased from canon (DFRP-canon, specifically) knowledge (meaning it was never that way in canon either).
-Secondly, how all this new stuff becomes accessible is due to the DESTRUCTION of the Field, as the result of a certain someone attacking the Origin of Light, which has been sustaining the field all this time. The Origin is somewhat destabilized by this attack and the Field is removed, so opening up the areas beyond the Macro Ocean to us.
-Thirdly, the destruction of the Field also resulted in the activation of the Way Stations, which is how they are suddenly all the rage. For now...
And now, a note on the connection between Algorithm and the Dark Area: Presently, the Dark Area was always accessible from the main continent via sea. That is STILL possible, because of a massive waterfall cascading down from the Macro Ocean to the Dark Area (resulting in the River Styx, which in turn leads to the Sea of Blood) through a massive hole in the Overworld. This waterfall replaces what is presently the Everfalls location.
Now, quite a few people have suggested that something simply happens to "reboot" the Digital World to magically bring all of this new stuff into existence, to somehow be part of a plot or something. To this I say OVER MY ROTTEN CORPSE :3 (unless there really is no other way to make this site canon. In which case I'll force myself into a "meh"), and for one simple reason: If all this new stuff is *new* in DFRP canon as well, then obviously none of it can be ancient. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE, because things like the Verge Gates (specifically) are supposed to be REALLY DAMN OLD. ANICENT. And things can't be ancient when they're new *eye roll*.
The whole plot with the "Field" I suggested at "firstly" is kind of a compromise to explain why no one in DFRP has ever visited the Verge Gates, even though such an explanation shouldn't even be necessary because of retconning.
That is all.
Aaaaand, I'm done.
In this thread, I shall give my suggestions as to what I'd like the Digital World of DFRP to look like, from its physical existence, to its regions and everything else I can think of before I get lazy. (There's also quite a bit of lore in here, btw.) So, let's begin.
Structure
Regions
Here I'll be listing all the regions and areas currently present in DFRP, along with the *new* regions and areas I would like to suggest. These new regions and areas are in BLUE and have asterixes (these thingums: *).
Also, an important (to me) suggestion about the regions: MAP. I would be more than happy to make this map myself. I think it’s important that we know which areas correct to which, you know? EDIT: I will make a proper map tomorrow. It will include elements of both the maps below and MEIP's map in the DATS thread.
NOTE: This is all HEAVILY outdated. Check thread page 2.
The Beams and the Verge Gates
It is almost exactly like the Code Core, except very few people know it exists (and even then they're not sure, or the knowledge is based off potentially dead-end research into the Code Core) and it has a more... sinister purpose... somehow.
But... HOW!?
