Step into Grandmother's House
|

"Grandma's house" was a good-sized apartment in an upper floor of a building in the West Shibuya Residential District. The place was quiet, fairly unremarkable. Middle class. The only looks they got were a few vague recognitions of Ren and the occasional admiring glance at Lucemon. Or at least at his holosuit. Ren led him to the elevator, they went upstairs and down a pair of hallways. It took Ren a minute to dig his keys from the bottom of his pack, and after a few impatient sighs from Luce' he unlocked the door and let them inside.
The apartment was warm, tastefully decorated in antiques because they'd been owned that long. There was a reasonable presence of nautical gear- a ship's wheel on the wall, a ship's clock sitting on the mantle over the fireplace. The front door opened into a comfortable living room with a sliding glass door opening onto a balcony from the wall on their right. There was a small TV tucked into one corner surrounded by bookcases; several had lighthouse bookends on their shelves, amongst other knicknacks. Directly ahead of them a hallway stretched down to what were likely bedrooms and bathrooms, and a doorway and half-wall on their left opened onto a kitchen filled with antique, well kept appliances next to modern ones. The entire place smelled of the racks of cookies cooling on counters in the kitchen, and soft violin music was playing from a speaker somewhere.
"Don't touch the cookies," he muttered absently, closing the door softly once Lucemon was inside and walking towards the hallway. "Grandma?" he called out, a little apprehensively.

Lucemon, or whatever he's going to call himself today, steps directly into the middle of the living room, looking around. Those cookies look good. He's surprised humans have cookies. He'll have to sample them, for the scientific gain of the Digital World. Yes.
He'd been a little unsure about the admiring glances people had given him. Why had they done it? He didn't even have wings in this form, let alone his glyph markings or holy rings. Was this form so impressive? Hm. Humans are weird. An interesting house, though. He hasn't been inside many buildings in his time, and certainly no human ones.
Are they all like this? How strange. 'Cozy', though. Whatever that means. Based on all the nautical gear, he can easily believe that one of Ren's relatives lives here...

"Grandma?" The music turned off with a click. "Ren?" Her voice was strong and low, her English heavy with her accent but very clear. She stepped out of a room off the hallway and walked with a steady, limber shuffle out into the light of the living room. She was short and a little plump but clearly in good health, few wrinkles on her skin except for the laugh lines around her eyes and mouth. Her steel-grey hair was pulled back into a low bun, and her eyes lit up when she laid eyes on her grandson. She walked forward and embraced him with a hug, wrapping her arms around him happily.
She didn't seem relieved so much as just she was always happy to see her grandchildren. "Ren. How was your sail. You're not covered in trash, I think you didn't go in the River? And you brought us home a friend," she said, looking past him at Lucemon.
"Oh. This- This is my friend. Luce'-... Luce'," he said finally, pronouncing it something like loos.
She walked past her grandson to take Lucemon's hand in both of her own, shaking it gently yet warmly. "Lūs. Welcome to our home. Are you a sailor like our Ren here?"

Lucemon blinks, and then nods, slowly. Right. Humans grow older and infirmer, rather than Digivolving. How unfortunate, "Ah. Please, call me Lucas, ma'am. Thank you for inviting me into your lovely home," he smiles.
Oh sure, her you turn the charm on for. Why wo--it's the cookies, isn't it. You jerk.
"Oh, I'm not a sailor yet, ma'am. But Ren's being teaching me a lot over the last few days," He grins. Oh god, why is he grinning. Someone stop him. He's clearly had an idea. That's not a good sign.

"Yeah, actually we've both been learning. A lot. I got some things from that chest Grandpa left. I thought maybe I could look around in his office, see if he left any keys in there. And there's something else. I-" "-Can wait until after you boys have had something to eat. Ren, you go and wash yourself up. You look like you've been sleeping in the wild. Lucas here is going to tell me about himself and eat some cookies while I prepare dinner."
Ren's eyes resembled a deer's when it's caught in oncoming headlights. He looked at Lucemon with something approaching panic before he was shoved towards the hallway and had the washroom door close in his face. "But, Grandma I-" Thwack.
"Now dear," she said, taking Lucemon by the arm and guiding him into the kitchen to sit at the table. She turned away from him, sweeping a rack of cookies onto a plate and setting it down in front of him. This was followed a moment later by a glass of milk. "Tell me more about yourself. Ren has never mentioned a 'Lūs' or a 'Lucas.' So you must be new. If my grandson is to be disappearing for days on end have a right to know who with." She said it all with a warm tone, nothing confrontational- a little nosy, maybe. But elderly grandmothers have the right.
Grandma Campbell reminded Lucemon so, nudging the plate of cookies closer.

'Lucas' sits quite happily with a smile, "Thank you, that's very thoughtful," He's a Pirate King. Chief? Chief?! Who did Ren think he was? Oh, right. He takes a bite out of one of the cookies and beams. They're pretty delicious, considering they're not made of data. He makes sure to chew and swallow, before he speaks.
"I'm fairly new, yes. We only met a few days ago, but we've been learning a lot from each other. He's been teaching me about sailing and the like. It's been quite interesting, I've never been too close to the water before now," Well, that bit's true. "He also knows the most--" Dammit, what was the word? Rhymes with semantics... Oh! "--romantic spots to sit,"
Oh god, that smirk.
Lucemon. Bro. What're you doing? Well, looks like Ren has another hole to dig himself out of.

Plumbing. The C0ve was definitely going to need plumbing, Ren decided as he stepped out of a shower. He hadn't noticed how much of a difference a few days without running had made until he got it back. He took his time, savoring the hot water, a shave. When he was done he changed into fresh clothes, another pair of loose khakis and a different blue tank top. He packed a few extra clothes and a couple potentially useful items from his things: a compass, a small telescope, an oil pencil and small book of graph paper. He forced himself to take his time, knowing it would look odd if he rushed out to check on them. Besides, Lucemon knew enough not to give everything away right. Right?
"Oh. I see," Grandma said as she took a seat across the corner of the table from 'Lucas.' She looked... pleased. "I wondered if it might be something like this. Ren hasn't been very social since he moved here, and well. Well you're just so pretty. I don't blame you for having a crush. I'm sure once you're a little older..."
"Hey Grandma... Lucas. What are you guys talking about? I hope you saved me some cookies..." Ren walked in, dropping his pack and a small duffel bag with his bomber jacket by the door then joined the two of them in the kitchen. Luce' had saved him some cookies. Only because he was only physically capable of eating so fast.

Lucemon seems momentarily stunned. That...did not go as he'd intended. Dammit. Ridiculous elderly human. She'd ruined his attempts to embarrass Ren Campbell in some manner! Bah. If she hadn't given him these cookies, he'd almost be displeased with her!
He gives Ren a somewhat sour look, and then picks up another cookie. Ridiculous humans. He'll have to rethink this plan slightly. Had she called him 'pretty'? His holosuit, at least. Maybe that's why the other humans kept looking earlier. How strange. Something to consider later. A Pirate King's work is never done.
He waits until Ren goes to take a cookie, and then leans in to take a bite out of it with a smirk. Oh, good. Now we're into gluttonous territory. He will consume all! Cookies and souls alike!

Ren frowned at the suddenly crescent-shaped cookie he was holding and dropped it onto the plate in front of Lucemon with a sigh. Not one to be dissuaded, he stood to grab his own plate and filled it with fresh cookies from the racks on the counter. Grandma made... A lot of cookies. She just watched them both with a knowing smile before standing up to shoo them both out of the room.
"Well you boys must be hungry for more than cookies. I'll give you some time alone, go look through your Grandpa's office. " I'll call you when dinner is ready." Not really waiting for a response she got up to bustle around the kitchen, leaving the boys to find their way down the hall to the office.
Grandpa's office was a chaotic maze of papers, boxes, magazines and books. The man adored his books as much as he loved the ocean, judging by the volume of volumes alone. Ren ushered 'Lucas' inside and closed the door with a hesitant little 'click,' muffling the noises of Grandma at work in the kitchen.
"Grandpa kept lots of journals, said it was always important to record the 'wonders around us.' I never really knew what he meant until..." He trailed off, presented once again with the enormity of the past few days and instead gestured vaguely at Lucemon by way of explanation. He navigated around the stacks of books and boxes of papers to Grandpa's desk and cleared a space to sit on the chair in front of it, staring at it with an absent kind of frown. "I have no idea where to even start," he admitted.
"Say... What were you and Grandma talking about while I was getting cleaned up?"

Lucemon strides around the office with a curious expression on his face. He picks up a magazine at random and flips through it. This deleted human apparently liked to hoard items. That's a good way to get yourself killed, in the Digital World.
He sets the magazine back down and walks across the room again, stepping through the desk and moving right past it to examine another book. "Mm? Oh, I was insinuating that you were my homosexual lover. Or at least that you were trying to seduce me," He comments, as though discussing tomorrow's weather.

Ren was already staring; that happened when people walked through solid objects right in front of him. Why hadn't the digimon done that sooner? Probably would have been helpful. Then he casually drops another bomb... Was he being serious? Did he actually- of course he did. Ren s learning that his feather-winged friend was kind of a jerk.
"You told her what? Are you- Luce', you can't say shit like that. You look, what? Sixteen? You're going to get me arrested! You're, I mean you look, underage. It's illegal to-"
He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose between two fingers. "You are going to cause me trouble. I just know it."

"Underage? What does that mean? In fact, what does most of that mean, Ren Campbell?" He flips through the book, then sets that down, and moves to look through a box. Well, at least his curiosity is still there! "You won't be arrested. Calm down, it's just a bit of fun," He gives Ren a look and laughs, "Although your grandma believes I have a 'smash' on you? I think she said?" He shrugs, helplessly.
He sits down and gives a horribly charming smile. Ugh. Of course he does. Stupid Holy Digimon, "Besides. You can't stay mad at me, apparently I'm very 'pretty',"

"A crush," he corrected Lucemon with a sigh. "She thinks you have a crush on the older boy who's befriended you. If she thought we were dating... well, in the human world I'm an adult under our laws. You... I don't even know how old you really are, but you look like a minor. A kid," he explained to Lucemon's uncomprehending look. "And in the real world when an adult seduces a child it's... well, it's bad. So maybe don't go implying that, please. It's against the law." Sighing again, Ren turned back to rifling through Grandpa's things more or less at random. It was hard to believe, but he'd just had to convince his friend, a digital angel, not to pretend they were a couple. Life is weird.
They spent a few moments in silence, looking through collections of pictures, magazines, travel journals... Grandpa kept a lot of stuff, most of it related to various exotic locations around the world. Had he been looking for something? The only sounds in the apartment were Grandma's singing, the quiet shuffling of papers and boxes in the office.
"So Grandma called you 'pretty,' huh."

Lucemon actually gives a small pout at Ren's words, "I was only playing. I'd never let you get into trouble, Ren Campbell, you're my friend," He gives a small sigh. Human humor is hard. "I don't know old I am, either. Digimon don't care about how many days they've been alive, just what stage in their evolutionary line they're at. Hff. The human world is silly,"
He lapses into silence as well, looking over some odd papers with a frown, "Mm? Oh, yes. She seemed to understand why you'd be attracted to my physical form. Well. My holosuit, at least. I assume it was a compliment," He picks the papers up and leafs through them. Interesting...

Ren was not quick to notice Lucemon's interest in the particular sheaf of papers the digimon was holding. He'd set the book he was leafing through back onto the desk, jostling a box of photos to make room. His seriousness vanished, replaced with an increasingly-familiar grin. He began chuckling softly, his shoulders shaking as he just leaned back and enjoyed the moment. Still leaning back, he spoke up to the ceiling. "Grandma is pretty old-fashioned. She caught up with the whole gay movement long ago, but she never seems to be able to say it. Old habits. So when she notices guys she thinks might be 'on my team,' that's what she calls the good looking ones. Particularly the, ah... effeminate ones."
He let out another chuckle, mimicking his grandma's soft voice: "Look Ren, he's pretty. Ren, you should meet my hairdresser. He's very pretty. Ren, Haruki-san's nephew is visiting and we thought you two should meet. He's very pretty!" He straightened up, looking back to Lucemon. "She's pretty insistent on helping with my love life. That last one in particular was... awkward."
"What are you looking at?"
