School was a simple time, for Kai. For eight hours a day, he could simply forget about the absolute havoc which the creatures known as Digimon had wrought upon his life. At school, things followed human logic, as opposed to the alien logic by which Digimon functioned. Meanwhile, his partner Kuro was usually enough to keep an eye on her brother, his other partner, Shiro. So, he could focus on his studies, while Haruki Yuuto and his friends chattered away. What were they even doing there? Their seats were all the way across the room! And he wasn't the only one who noticed this. Every once in a while people would tell them off for it, for some reason. He didn't get it.
Something in the corner of his eye caught his attention. No. It couldn't be. It took all his self control not to stand up and leave, right then and there. It was still class time. A dull dread set over him, but there was nothing he could do.
-Earlier-
It was dark. It was cramped. It was exciting! Kai had been in such a hurry today, he hadn't even noticed that there were two Digimon in his bag! Shiro, who had snuck in just in case this happened, and Kuro, who had tried to get her brother out before it was too late. But it was! And now Shiro was going to see this mystical place called, "School!" He felt the bag plunk onto the ground. Now he just had to get out without Kai noticing...
Freedom! School was... A lot of feet. Shiro slipped across the floor, undetected. After all, who was bothering to look down? Kuro slid after him, unable to call out for him to stop without alerting students to their presence. It was there that Kai, in the corner of his eye, saw the two slipping out the doorway. What a disaster!
It felt like an eternity until lunchtime, when he could reasonably excuse himself from the room. "Bathroom" and "Nurse" were lies that were too easy to call out, and he knew how bad that would be. He just had to trust Kuro to keep Shiro out of sight, right? But they could be anywhere! He would have to search the whole school!
Bursting into the halls, Kuro and Shiro found themselves alone. That was odd, considering the sheer number of humans in the room they had just left. The Digimon had no way of knowing that this was how 'school' worked. All they knew was that discovery was hard with no one around. "Shiro, this is foolishness! Do you want us to be taken away from Kai!?" Kuro hissed at her brother, reminding him of the warning they had been given. Shiro scoffed, overconfident. "You go back, then, sis. No way that I'm getting caught! C'mon, let's see what it is about this place that makes Kai want to keep us away!"
"You mean, other than the sheer volume of people, that were in that room?" Kuro asked. Shiro just ignored her and pushed on down the hall. It wasn't long before the two were well and truly lost. Even if they wanted to, they couldn't get back to Kai's classroom! Just then, a loud sound rang out across the building. The Digimon were forced to scramble for cover, as students exited their classrooms. Somehow, they managed to evade detection, but they were still lost when they came to a somehow empty section of the school. A place safe from detection, where they could figure something out. Or so they thought

Today, unlike most days, felt like a drag. A sigh escaped between rosy lips as Rei sat back in her chair, her head leaning back to glance at the white ceiling above. The lunch bell had just rang. Usually she would be one of the first eager students out the door. That was a year ago. These days now, the sandy haired teenager had to wait till the halls cleared. With her set limp, she was slower, causing the other students to bump by her as they tried to pass. After a week of this, Rei decided just to sit and wait. It was a lot easier than getting bustled around.
Such a thing was particularly hard for this particular girl. Especially when it came to the need to satisfyingly click the button of her camera. Don’t get her wrong. Rei can be patient, but there was certain things that she couldn’t be patient about. And her photography was one of those things.
Clunk.
She settled her chair back on all fours, sliding out of the seat and slinging her pack over a shoulder. That should be long enough. Excitedly she slipped her camera out and limped the opposite direction of the lunch room. Rei rather liked eating on the go, thus there was never a day when she didn’t have packed lunch. Where to first? She hummed in thought, pulling out a sandwich to munch on. If felt like a blank day. Silent. Quiet. So somewhere emptier than usual. Classrooms.
The aesthetic of empty rooms and clubs sounded pretty appealing at the moment. With that decided, she made her way to one of the wings of the school. Places most likely to be free of students loitering or scurrying to lunch. Of course she could always take pics of her own classroom. But where was the fun in that? Needed to be something a bit more unfamiliar in atmosphere. Like a stranger to her.
Finished with her snack, Rei paused as she reached one of the first level classrooms. Somewhere around here should be good! Deciding to get a shot of the clear hallway too, Rei crouched, positioning to get an angle. As her camera flashed, and blinding her momentarily, something caught her attention through the lens. Something small and furry, black? Slinking around the corner. She tilted her head. Did someone bring a dog to school?
Curious Rei stood and followed after. At this point she heard brief whispering coming from a Classroom further down the corner she turned. Oh. Seems like there was some stragglers. One of them probably brought their pet when they shouldn’t have. Rei grinned mischievously. Maybe they would like to take part in some of her photos? One or two students, sitting apart from each other in the empty room, staring out the window or disinterested in the going on’s. She could imagine it. It would look good in her professional portfolio. And in return she wouldn’t snitch on them.
Suckers!
“Ahaha! Caught you guys red handed!” In a dramatic approach of slamming the door open, Rei ran in, ready to flash the camera for blackmail for her great scheme. But to her surprise, she wasn’t meet with two students but…a cat…a weasel? Rei blinked, lowering her device to stare at the black and white pair. But she swore she heard people talking in here. Did she imagine it?
“Huh that’s strange. And what are you two…supposed to be?” It was a rhetorical question of course. Animals didn’t talk after all, and they somehow didn’t look right to be weasels and cats. They were furry most certainly, really cute too, she had to admit. But strange creatures if she ever saw one. Ah well, looks like she was going to have to report them in anyhow. They can’t remain wandering around the school, at least without their owner, or owners.

Caught. The word resounded in the empty room. Kuro's heart sank. They'd been caught. All Kai's care, all her efforts had come to naught. Shiro's troublemaking had gotten them into a hole she didn't think they could climb back out of. Caught. They'd be taken away from Kai. For all his faults, she rather liked the human boy. She certainly didn't want to be taken away from him. Caught.
Shiro, on the other hand, understood nothing of the seriousness of the situation. He tilted his head at the human. She was silly. Who was Shiro supposed to be, but Shiro? Humans were always silly like this! He'd just have to explain to her! "Shiro is Shiro!" He chirped. Next to him, Kuro's groan was audible. They were screwed.
Kai tried his hardest not to look panicked. If someone caught it on his face, he'd have to explain to them why. And he couldn't lie to save his life. He had to calm down. If he were a stray Digimon in a school, where would he be? Not near people, certainly. Shiro might not care, but Kuro was there to keep him in check. Why had he not checked his bag! If anything happened, it would be his fault!
Okay, so away from people. He needed to focus. The important thing now was finding them, so nothing bad did happen. That meant away from the cafeteria. Where, where, where? He found himself in an empty first floor wing. No, not empty. He'd now that chirp anywhere. He was too late. Shiro was talking to someone.

This was one of those things. One of those things that took a minute to register. Rei didn’t know how long she stared at the cat creature. In a strange response, her finger twitched, pushing the shutter-button and releasing a great flash. That seemed to snap her out of it. A small shriek escaped her throat as Rei stumbled backwards into the hallway. “I-i-it talked! Thatthingtalked!” She stuttered out in a near garble of words.
Unlike most humans, the shock left as fast as it came. After the initial outburst of surprise, Rei paused, crouching with narrowed eyes at the pair. “I must be dreaming.” She pinched her herself. No. There was pain. It was usually a numb sensation if she was. That much she knew. Unsure what to do, Rei only echoed what it said. “Shiro is…shiro?”
Perhaps it was this amazing phenomenon that she didn’t outright run screeching in fear. In fact, something as amazing as this made her heart race. The idea that it could be a prank clicked into place. It was actually very plausible. On second thought. “Am I being pranked?” Never hurt to ask. If she was, they weren’t getting the reaction most hoped for. Actually, if she was, then Rei could feel most proud in not embarrassing herself anymore from something so absurd.

A flash of light startled the two Digimon, who had never seen a camera before. They both jumped back, thinking it was some kind of attack. When nothing happened, they were surprised. Kuro was wary, still. She didn't know what that flash had done, when nothing happened while she and Shiro were momentarily blinded. Shiro, on the other hand, didn't think that much. "Huh? Why wouldn't I talk?" The white cat-like creature asked, tilting his head curiously. This human was silly!
"Not dreaming! Are all humans this silly?" Shiro asked. Kuro just sighed. Shiro wasn't helping. At all. In fact, every time he opened his mouth, he made things worse. She wished Kai were here. He'd no what to do!
Ask and you shall receive! A human figure burst through the door. "Kai!" Both Digimon spoke in unison. They didn't care how he'd found them, he was here! The boy in question tried to analyze the situation. Shiro had been talking. There was a girl, he didn't recognize her, so she probably wasn't in his grade. She must be so confused. He knew he would be, if he found a talking cat in school.
"Please... Errr... Calm down! I can explain!

"Kai Haimura?"
Rei's head swiveled to the newcomer. She knew him, of course. How couldn't she? Always pointed out as the guy who was in every club possible. Funnily enough, not in her photography club. So she never actually met met him. She just knew who he was. Was prankster a part of that list?
"Calm down?" She stood, her glaring golden eyes now turned on him. "Explain? So this isn't a prank?" What in the world was going on. Why did those things know him? What were they even? So many questions that Rei wanted to blurt out in rapid succession that she bit her tongue to refrain from doing so. One thing at a time.
"Alright, I'm calm. So explain then." She held up her camera. "And if you lie to me, I'll go and post their pics all over the internet just to figure out whats really going on." It wasn't quite an empty threat. Just something to hold over him if he decided to screw with her. He may seem like some kind of nerd, but she didn't know him well enough to, well, know. Though usually, Rei wasn't the sort to do a thing like this. It was the curiosity talking. She was practically as harmless as a mouse in reality. Tough, but not the sort to cause real harm to people.

"You know me!?" was Kai's first reaction. Had he met her before and just forgotten? That was... awkward. "I'm sorry, I don't remember your name..." No, now was not the time for awkwardly admitting that he hadn't paid any attention when they met! There was trouble afoot! He needed to somehow convince this girl not to do anything rash. Oh, if only Shiro hadn't spoken! His two partners looked close enough to real animals that he could pretend that they were. But talking animals didn't work.
Oh, she had thought it was a prank... Well, Kai had just as good as admitted that it wasn't. What to do now? He needed to... He didn't know! He'd never been in this situation before! Every other human who had run into Kuro and Shiro had been involved with Digimon! Now that he thought about, that was ridiculous, considering Shiro's penchant for trouble. Was it possible that the number of normal people was just far outstripped by the number of people involved with Digimon!? That was a harrowing thought.
"Okay, okay!" He didn't have the time to come up with a convincing lie. He told the truth. "These two are..." the words stuck in his throat. He didn't want to get her involved! But he didn't have a choice. "They're creatures from another world, known as Digimon. They form partnerships with humans for... Reasons. We help them grow stronger. These two... Are my partners. The white one is Shiro, the black one is his sister, Kuro. They must have snuck into my bag when I came to school today."
It would be a miracle if she believed him.

"Sort of. We haven't properly met."
Rei's hands went to her hips. That wasn't the problem at the moment. Thankfully he didn't dwell too much it. If she wasn't the one causing his nervousness, she would've felt bad for him. In fact she did feel a little guilty. Putting him on the spot like that. Rei shook her head, a small sigh blowing through her lips. Well she wasn't going to back off now after threatening him.
"Are?" She urged him on. His hesitation only peeked her interest further.
When the explanation finally formed from his tongue, her eyes grew wider with each sentence. Rei heart beat picked up again. Another world? Digimon? These things were called...digimon. And there was a place full of them? "You're crazy." She couldn't come up with anything else coherent. She felt a little dizzy, crouching and hugging her knees against her chest as she processed this information. He had to be crazy! Disbelief pushed into Rei's mind. Then it switched, flickering back and forth between its counterpart of belief.
If he was crazy then she had to be crazy too. There were two of them there, right in front of her! They can talk! They were weird looking! Closely resembled animals but they weren't quite the right depictions of what she knew. In an instant, if felt like her world was shattering.
Again.
And the whole process would start over when denial oh-so-wanted to be right. A battle raged inside of her. She needed time to think this through. Rei stood, still in a slight daze as she mumbled. "I-I'm gonna go to the nurses office." This was taking too much from her. It made her feel sick. The same feeling when she was told she would never be able to be part of the Olympian gymnastics team. A shaking truth.
If he said anything, Rei didn't hear it, limping away with her camera cradled in arms. As if it was the one thing holding her grounded. And that one thing, well, lets just say, that one thing began to change. Dumbly she looked down at her precious instrument. Electricity snapped at her fingers and Rei shouted in surprise, letting the form fall to the ground in a clattering bounce.
"My Camera!" It changed.A strange device taking its place upon the hallway floor. It was red, a black grip, and looked like it would fit perfectly in the palm of her hand. Almost like some weird pagering device, but bigger. "My camera!" Rei whispered again in shock. An expensive gift that her parents got for her after her accident! What happened to it! No, no, no. All her recent photos gone! She was going to email them through the wifi hookup after school! This can't be happening. First this now this.
And how was she going to explain it to her parents! Rei groaned, her head falling into her hands. Almost as if she didn't see it, that it didn't happen. That it would all go back to normal. "This isn't happening," She panicked, "You have got to be kidding me!"

Hadn't properly met? What did that mean? How did she know him? He wasn't anything special, and wasn't in her class, to boot! About the only places his name could be found were on the class assignment at the beginning of the year, and the test scores that were occasionally posted. But those didn't have pictures with them... Oh well! He'd worry about this later! Right now he needed to convince her not to post those photos!
He didn't blame her for thinking he was crazy. Heck, he wasn't sure he -wasn't- crazy. It was just that everything he'd seen pointed towards not crazy. The girl... He still didn't know her name, he realized, seemed to have a lot of trouble accepting this. When she curled up into an upright fetal position, he tried approaching her, though he wasn't sure what to say. Shiro did, though. "Are you okay?" He asked, though it probably would just make it worse.
She walked off, Kai chased after. He hadn't noticed her limp before. He felt a bit bad... But the more important thing was to keep her from posting those pictures! "Wait here! Stay out of sight! He called to the two Digimon. He'd berate them later, for now, keeping them out of the hallways was best. As he stepped into the hallway, he saw the girl's expensive looking camera drop to the ground.
Except... It wasn't a camera anymore. "Oh." was all he could say. "Oh what?" asked Shiro, blatantly disobeying Kai's order for him to stay in the room. "Sorry... I couldn't keep him in" Kuro apologized, following her brother. "Oh, I have a lot more explaining to do." Kai said, pointing at the red and black D-tector on the ground.
He approached carefully. She was taking it pretty badly, it seemed. The camera had looked expensive, but not so much as to warrant this. Perhaps it had some personal significance? He felt bad for her. Her world had pretty much turned upside down. He'd seen people react to it in different ways, and breaking down like this was... not entirely uncommon. He walked up to her, Kuro and Shiro at his heels, not entirely sure what to say.

Rei had to accept the reality. Whatever was going on, it happened. It was no dream, no hallucination. An aching loss settled in her chest and she took a deep breath to calm herself. She could freak out more later. Sense, as whatever sense this even was, returned. First things first. "Is any of whats going on your fault? I mean, to think. I never meet digimon before. But bam! You bring some to school, and afterwards, my camera turns into this thing!" She picks up the device and holds it out to his face. The journalist inside of her just wanted to get to the bottom of it all now. It wasn't exactly anger. It was fierceness. Demanding. Though she couldn't exactly decide what she should be feeling about it all.
If Rei couldn't take the truth, so obvious in front of her, she shouldn't ask for it. That was the first mistake she made. So now she was going to have to face it head on. "I won't be angry if it was. It was sort of my fault too." She sighed, lowering the item and looking it over herself. It looked like one of those handheld video-game consoles. The guy was probably going to think her insane. Her emotions where all over the place. Enough to be confusing for any sort of person. "Sorry," She blurted out in response to that thought. Now she felt a tad embarrassed over her performance. When it came to her camera, she couldn't help it.
On the bright side, it still technically was, wasn't it? Just took a different appearance, whatever its function was for now.

Kai just waited while the girl shouted. He didn't blame her for thinking that way. Heck, he couldn't say for sure that it wasn't his fault! It certainly wouldn't be the first time that someone had 'randomly' become a Tamer in his presence. She wasn't a tamer, per se, but it was close enough. Was it possible that just being around Digimon was enough to transform someone into a... What was a word for both tamers and spirit users? He'd figure it out later. This wasn't the time for terminology.
"I'm sorry, but I honestly don't know what triggers it. What's worse, it only transforms a device some of the time, others it just appears out of thin air... " It was one of those things that endlessly frustrated him. What logic picked people for this, and how they received their digivice? He himself hadn't received a Digivice for a week after meeting Kuro and Shiro!
He took out his Digivice. This next part would be easier with a visual aid. "This is my equivalent of that. As you can see, it's more than a little different... But here isn't really the place to talk about this. Would you mind going somewhere a bit more private?" Okay, so he could have phrased that in a way that sounded less... Well, the way it sounded.
They ended up going to the Judo club room. Fortunately it was empty until after school activities. "Okay, so mine and yours are different. Mine is how I help my partners grow, somehow it transfers energy from me to them, so they Digivolve. I'd demonstrate, but..." Well, for one, he couldn't. For a second, even if he could, most champion levels he had come across would not fit in this room. "I can't. I haven't managed to reach the next level yet." As much as it pained him to admit that.
"Yours is different, though. Yours is a subset of Digivice called a D-Scanner." According to Scout, at least. He didn't know where Scout had gotten the name. "Now, this is where it gets awkward to explain. You see, the way a D-scanner works isn't by helping a partner... It turns the user into a Digimon. Don't ask how, I don't really get it. Which will be a recurring theme, as you may have noticed. Things to do with Digimon often work in incomprehensible ways."
"Now, don't get me wrong. You won't press a bunch of buttons and suddenly be Shiro." The white Digimon perked up, hearing his name. Fortunately, he wasn't interrupting, this was awkward enough to explain as is. Where was Scout when you needed him!? He was a Spirit User, he knew how this worked! Kai didn't! "In the Digital World where Digimon come from, there are objects known as Spirit Totems. Once you find them, you can use them to become a Digimon... somehow."

Golden eyes gave his digivice a good look over, glancing between his and hers. He was right, they were different. Why was that? "Sure." Rei shrugged, following after him as they searched for someplace a little more...private. Well of course when it was put that way. She rolled her eyes and stifled her giggles. Finally they settled on the Judo club and she closed the door behind them.
"Continue." To her disappointment, there would be no demonstration. She didn't comment or press him further about it however. Kai seemed embarrassed about it for some odd reason. Maybe at certain points, some should have already... digivolved? So he hasn't reached his yet? Could be he's already been at it for a while now. She wondered what kind of status quo this whole new world had that made him feel like that.
The upperclassman decided to make herself comfy upon the floor, her ears inventively listening as she examined her...D-scanner? So that's what it was called. However the next part made her pause and she looked up at him in surprise. "What?" It'll allow her to turn into one of those things? How was that even possible? Why was it different for her? The sickening crumbling foundation settled in her stomach again but she stubbornly pushed it away.
It felt like the further he explained, the more twisted her reality was becoming. Dealing with Digimon was fine. It was dealt with. Turning into one? That was a whole different story. When he finished, Rei stared blankly at her digivice and a thought suddenly occurred to her.
In a flash she was on her feet.
"So you're telling me, I have to go to this Digital world to find these spirit totems?" Hope blossomed. If what he said was true- this would basically be her second chance. Not entirely in the way she would want it, but it was better than nothing. "Do you know if any prior physical ailments still effect you when you you turn into a digimon?" These questions came in rapid fire successions."How do I get there?" What seemed to be the end of normal life as she knew it, actually opened a new door. An impossible- now possible- with the impossible -but very real and possible- glorious opportunity.
Rei didn't care how or why it worked. All she needed to know was what to do, and where to go. The rest didn't matter much as this point of time.

This girl was a good listener, at least. She was confused, and surprised, but that was to be expected. Still, after her initial shock, she was handling it quite well. All things considered, it was rather surprising. He'd have expected more people to freak out when he told them about Digimon. Most just seemed to take it in stride after the initial shock. Maybe they were just in shock. He honestly couldn't explain it. Just like he couldn't explain a lot of Digimon things.
"Yes. As far as I can tell, all spirit totems are hidden somewhere in the Disital World. Once there, your D-Scanner should point the way." Or at least, Scout's had done that, he presumed. The other boy had used it to navigate, the one time he brought Kai along on his search. "I don't know about that. My experience with Spirit users is rather limited. You'd have to try it to find out... Though, my first inclination would be to say yes, at least." It would help if he understood how Spirit Evolution worked. Did it coat the user in data, or completely replace them with data? If it was the former, then her injury would stick. Otherwise... Well, he didn't know if the injury would be digitized or not.
"To get there..." He hesitated. He knew exactly what would happen if he told her. After all, it was what had happened last time, and this girl seemed even more eager! She would hop on the train at the next opportunity. The Digital World was simply too dangerous for him to let her go alone.
"It's in the train terminal. I won't tell you exactly how to get there, though. Meet me there this weekend, and I'll take you with a friend who can reach a higher stage. The Digital World is dangerous for the unprepared. Digimon there aren't exactly fond of humans, and will attack." he put emphasis on the will. Sure, the only time he had been attacked unprovoked was by a Digimon after Kuro and Shiro's data, but that wasn't the point. The point was that a human, alone in the Digital World, was just asking for trouble. He waited for her to respond.

Rei frowned.
Well, she didn't like the sound of that. Throwing a pacifist such as herself into a highly aggressive environment? However it was understandable. It would be like aliens coming to visit Earth, and humans not knowing if they will be hurt by them or taken advantage of. Fear was a reason for conflict. And she didn't like the idea that she would be the cause of such distress.
But Rei wanted to go. She wanted to find her spirit totem. She wanted the freedom from her burden- or the chance since Kai wasn't entirely sure- even if it only lasted a short while at a time. And here I thought I came to terms with it, she grimly mused to herself. Her decision was made. Rei would be highly respectable of the inhabitants and the digital world itself. It helped that finding her totem would be pretty easy. Just follow the D-scanner like a compass!
"Alright. I'll let you take me then." She grinned. Rei was sure that she would have eventually figured it out herself without his instructions. A location to start with would have sufficed. One that he already gave out freely. But since he was offering to be her guide, she would let him. Besides, she was curious about this other person he wanted to bring along, and what category of tamers, spirit users, whatever, they belonged to.
The teenager crouched to pick up the white fluff ball. "Shiro,' She started, now widely grinning, "Gonna protect me from the big bad digimon?" Of course she figured out that was his name thanks to earlier. There was two reasons why she did this.
One: Because they were so cute, she just needed to squeeze one of them. Two: Because that need was also the need to verify their existence by touch. That way she knew they were more than just a blob of data. Real and intelligent.
Dear gods and goddess, this is real.
"What day, what time?" Rei spoke to Kai, still huggling the poor little digimon. Since he was the one who offered his services, she would let him decide. Her schedule wasn't exactly that busy, so she was basically free any time. Especially on the weekends.

Okay, she agreed to go with him. That was a start. Of course, that hadn't stopped Paige. Fortunately Scout had gotten there in time, not that there had been any trouble in the end. Still, it was highly unlikely they'd be meandering around Terminus this time. The Digital World at large was a big place, and dangerous. He really hoped that Scout would be able to come this time.
"Hey!" Shiro squeeked in protest, with Kuro also baring her tiny fangs threateningly. No one attacked her brother like that! But Shiro was instantly appeased by the flattery. "Hah! If anything, you'll have to protect them from me!" He declared, with his usual bluster. The nonsense of his statement didn't bother him at all. Kuro relaxed.
"Oh, err, how about Saturday, at noon?"That should work. "Time flows the same in the Digital World, and we don't know how long this will take, so try to make sure no one will be worried if you're gone for a while."
