"Challenge Accepted" [Shichiro/Takahiro]

"Queen's bishop three to Queen's five." Shichiro moved his knight and sat back nervously, more on edge than usual for a chess game. They were in Taka's room in the Evans household, a few days after Shichiro's first trip to the Digital World. Shichi had home that Saturday smiling and bright. Enthusiastic instead of passive. School had been disappointing, if anything; they had yet to run into each other in the large building, separated by several grade levels as they were. The absence however had given Shichiro a chance to think, and plan. He wanted to do it right, after all.
So Wednesday afternoon he waited for Takahiro by his bike after school and asked if he could come hang out. They went back to Taka's, and in what could very likely become a habit between the two began a game of chess. It was very difficult; he maneuvered to subtle leave Taka openings and build the game towards a win for black. He'd slipped a little folded square of paper underneath his King.
You won my heart. Will you go on a date with me?

Takahiro might've noticed the openings and is merely playing along, or maybe he is oblivious. Maybe Shichiro is the master of subtlety that he hopes he is! Probably not though. He moves his Queen into position and knocks Shichiro's king over with a smile, “M-mate,”
He doesn't notice the paper for a few seconds. When he does see it, he gives Shichiro a questioning look, before unfolding the paper and giggling. He composes himself, and nods, “Y-yes, Shichan,” He doesn't ask where, or when, as curious as he is...
Surely he'll be told!
...Tick tock.

What a tease. "Don't make any plans Friday. I'll pick you up at five." It was all he would say on the subject, unable to keep that stupid grin off his face. He was clearly pretty excited; it was all he could do not to spill the beans. But he'd really thought about this one, and even Dad had helped him with it. He didn't want to ruin the moment. So they hung out for the rest of the night, played a few more games of chess and a couple other board games Shichi had brought. He excused himself early and pecked Takahiro on the cheek on the way out. "See you tomorrow, Takun."
The school day passed for Shichiro in a blur, and after a frantic ride home to prepare he was back at the door to Takahiro's apartment at five. He'd quickly changed out of his uniform in favor of black jeans and a matching button-up shirt with silver pinstripes. He'd added a purple bow tie that matched his hair and rolled his sleeves to just below his elbows. The boy cleaned up nice, actually, and he looked nervous as hell as he knocked on the door. Everything had to be just perfect.

Bam! The door opens!
Although...not as suddenly as that. A tall caucasian man, probably in his mid to late thirties, with blonde hair and the same grey eyes as Takahiro is standing there. He's dressed in some obscure band t-shirt, and eyes the newcomer for a moment, before smiling, “Hello! You must be Shichiro!” His Japanese is...not great. Comprehensible, but not fantastic, much as Scout and Takahiro have said before.
“Come on in to, Takahiro is just getting prepared,” He steps back to allow the boy inside. At least he's trying, with his Japanese though! A Japanese woman of around the same age as the man who is presumably Takahiro's father is sitting at the kitchen counter, playing Gin Rummy with Petermon.
Of course. What else would the murder-fairy be doing.

The door might as well have slammed open with a boom like a gunshot and an ominous creak, the way Shichiro jumped when Mr. Evans swung it open. "Um, yes. I mean, yes I am. Um, I mean, good evening sir, Mr. Evans!" He bowed low, his purple hair falling over already-reddening ears. Seriously, child. At the drop of a hat. He straightened and took the opening Mr. Evans offered to step inside, taking off his shoes and walking over to bow to Takahiro's mom as well. He waved to Petermon when he caught the digimon's eye, and shuffled a little anxiously, his gaze alternating between the parents. Oh god, Taka. Please hurry before he embarrasses himself.
"Mr. and Mrs. Evans, thank you for, um. For letting Takahiro come out with me." Blush. "I, um. I like him very much."

The mother smiles from her place at the table, "We can tell he has the same feelings about you, Shichiro. I've never seen him so excited about going somewhere," She finds the idea of them 'letting' him go quite amusing. They've never stopped their kids doing anything that wasn't horrendously stupid.
"Steven and Rika. Please. We feel elderly enough as it is," Takahiro's dad sighs. People always insisted on being so formal here. Intolerable! "Come, tell us. Where're you taking our little boy tonight?"
Way to embarrass him, dad.

Well, that turned the blush up about three shades. Shichiro looked around nervously, beckoning them both to lean closer. Ooh, secrets! "Um, there's an arcade on Cat Street I like. I thought we could take the bus there and play some games. And then take a walk on, um, the university campus. My dad is a professor," he explained, his speech smoothing a little as he forgot to be nervous in his excitement for the little plot he'd put together. His ears were still red as hell, though. "I spend time on campus a lot. There's some pretty paths we can walk. And, um, and talk. Dad left me his ID badge so I can get into the building and up to this spot on the roof. I go up there to look at the sky. And the city. And, you know. To think."
He got even redder. It sounded less dorky in his mind than it did to say out loud, "I brought up a blanket and some food and stuff earlier. For, um. a picnic."

“Oh, that sounds lovely! I'm sure Takahiro will enjoy that!” Rika smiles, lowering her voice, “He's a romantic at heart,” She makes a note that Shichiro's father is a professor at the university, though. You never know when you'll need completely irrelevant facts like that!
“Now,” Steven puts a hand on Shichiro's shoulder (must be where Scout gets his lack of boundaries), “it's a friday, so there's no specific time you have to have Taka back,” They clearly have a lot of faith in their children, “just make sure the two of you have a nice, safe night, okay?”
A few moments later, the bedroom door opens and Takahiro steps out, nervously. He's wearing a dark red button-up shirt, his waistcoat, and black skinny jeans. He adjusts his glasses, and glides his original Digivice and a data card into his pocket with only a little difficulty. “Oh, uh. Shichan...y-you look, um. You look really nice...”
Bless him, he's more nervous than ever.

"Yes sir. We'll be careful," he promised. He'd already had a similar conversation with Dad and Gawain; the PawnChessmon was convinced they were going to be attacked while they wandered the streets of Shibuya. He'd only managed to skirt past the digimon by telling Kiyoshi he could play with his new 'toy' while he was gone. Shut him up at once, and it made his brother happy. Double win. Takahiro stepped out of his room and Shichi stood up and away from his consult with Mr and Mrs. Evans quickly, like he'd been caught conspiring. Which he basically had. He beamed when he got a look at Takahiro, smiling wide enough he looked ready for his jaw to fall right off.
"Hi, um. wow. You look really good too, Takun. Thank you for, um. For going out with me tonight."

“I was...um. I was hardly gonna say no to you,” By Yggdrasil's...uh. Code! He looks so bashful and embarassed at the moment. He takes his jacket from the hook and pulls it on, still pink in the face as he takes a few seconds to find the strength to look Shichiro in the eyes. A smile.
“Okay, um. M-mom, dad. We're going!”
“Takahiro, checklist,” His dad stops them.
Takahiro mumbles something that sounds like 'stop embarrassing me'.
“Wallet, phone, inhaler, Digivice, BlackAgumon,”
“Yes, dad, all of them,” Oh no! Shichiro will know he needs an inhaler.
Steven pats his son on the shoulder, “Okay, have a nice time, son,”

If Shichiro noticed or cared that Taka needed the inhaler, he didn't show it. Though he did make a mental note of the pocket Takahiro put it in. Just in case. He bowed once more to Taka's parents on the way out, muttering "Good night, Mr, um. Steven and Rika." The went down to the elevator, Shichiro all but bouncing the whole way. Finally. They were doing it. His parents hadn't even been that bad. Pretty nice, actually.
"I hope you don't mind taking the bus down to Cat Street," he said apologetically. "I thought it would be better than my dad driving us. He, uh... he likes to sing to the radio." He made a face, indicating just how pleasant that experience was. "And I wanted more time for us to hang out and talk," he explained.

Takahiro smiles as they leave, and head down and out. He follows Shichiro's directions, of course. He knows where they need to go, but...well. It's Shichiro's date! He pauses, and then reaches out and takes hold of Shichiro's hand. To hold as they walk! He gives it a squeeze.
"I wouldn't've, um. Minded. But I would like more time with just, um. Just with you," He looks up at his friend...no, his new boyfriend. There's a full foot of difference in height between the two of them, which...makes Taka feel like a little kid, but. Well. Shichiro wouldn't want to date a kid, so he must be wrong! "What shall we, uh. What should we t-talk about?"

Shichiro grinned when Taka took his hand. His squeezed gently in return, enjoying the feeling. He walked in silence for a minute, finally giggling a little at his continued nervousness. "I'm not sure," he admitted. "I've never really been on a date before. Well, I guess once. But I was eleven and it was with this girl named Shizumi. I was too afraid of her to say no when she told me we were going to be boyfriend and girlfriend. She made me take her for ice cream on week, on a Friday like this. She talked the entire time about nonsense, ate half of my sundae and broke up with me on Monday."
"I think she just wanted someone to buy her ice cream," he said thoughtfully.

Takahiro stares, "That's good. I'd, um. I'd hate to think I have to scratch someone's eyes out..." A joke! Amazing! "I've, um. N-never been on a date before either. Obviously," A little nervous laughter, "You could just, um. You c-could tell me more about you! I know we've hung out a little, and now we're...on a date, but. I'd like to know more about you, Shichan,"
Poor kid. He seems to be completely enamored with his new purple-haired boyfriend.
"I...I wouldn't mind ice cream at some point though," He admits, quietly.

Shichiro made a mental note. Ice cream. There was that shop by the campus... yeah. That would work. Checkmate, romance. He walked a little closer to Takahiro, thinking a minute about what to say, where to begin. "Well I was born in Niigata. My family lived there until I was nine and my mom got a job offer from Shibuya Medical. I already didn't make friends easily, and not only was I the new kid, but um. Well we didn't exactly fit in with the 'poor' kids, but we didn't have enough to be one of the 'rich' kids either. There... well, um. There was this one boy. Kouhei Kanemoto. He stood up for me against the bullies. He was my friend. He taught me to play chess," he explained with almost no hitch in his voice. "He, um. He disappeared when I was thirteen. Things were hard after that."
His voice brightened, though. "It started to get better, though. This boy came to chess club, and we started being friends. He's really cute, and kind and pretty amazing. I'm going to take him on a date."
